at last - full house at the crucible ECO SOFAS The final day of the World Snooker Championship marked a special moment on the calendar as a capacity crowd returned at a UK sporting event for the first time in more than a year. Numbers at the Crucible saw a more modest 980 fans on Monday as part of a Government pilot scheme that will

hopefully also allow audiences back into theatres. But how has snooker’s showpiece event been able to dust off the soldout signs, welcome the roar of fans and offer a first glimpse of something resembling sporting normality? As master of ceremonies Rob Walker introduced finalists Mark Selby and Shaun

Murphy, it felt like normal service had been resumed as a “Crucible roar like never before” reverberated around the auditorium. Walker said his duties had given him “an unforgettable and emotional experience. The final transcends snooker,” he said. “You couldn’t feel the electricity to begin with but as we’ve edged towards

the end you’ve felt it and we’ve heard the Crucible roar.” Seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry added: “It was incredible for everyone involved. Every sport has missed it but here at the Crucible it is just special.” There were also extensive guidelines for all fans to follow, which included taking a Covid-19

st luke’s hospice & dying matters week

DYING Matters Awareness Week is back from May 10 to 16, giving people across the country the chance to talk openly and frankly about end of life issues. This theme for this year’s week - which highlights the issues surrounding end of life, dying and bereavement - is ‘In a Good Place.’ It’s a topic that has been much more in the nation’s mind in the past year as the Coronavirus pandemic affected the choices available for people facing end of life care. For St Luke’s the week provides the opportunity to share the many ways in which the charity has continued to offer support to both the terminally ill and their families during the crisis. Statistics now show that more than four in five people say they

would prefer to die at home, a figure which is reflected in the St Luke’s experience. At any one time the team is caring for 20 patients in the charity’s In Patient Centre at Little Common Lane - a total of 300 in any one year. But at the same time, the specialist Community team supports around 350 patients in their own homes – a total of around 1,800 annually. The past year, however, has seen the Covid-19 pandemic stretch national health support resources to the maximum and the increased number of deaths across the country means the topics of death and dying have been highlighted more than ever. St Luke’s has been a key part of the network of support throughout that time, working harder than

ever throughout the crisis, with the emphasis always on maintaining full levels of support for all patients, both at the hospice and in their own homes. “We aim to review Advanced Care Planning (ACP) with all our patients each time we visit them at home to ensure we’re focussing on their wishes, their families’ wishes and checking that these wishes haven’t changed,” said Director of Care Jo Lenton. “This wish might include where they want to die, which may be at home - in which case our Community team provide support to enable this - but for others they want may want to be in our Patient Centre. The important thing, of course, is that being ‘in a good place’ means different things to different people and that is particularly reflected

in the many different communities we serve. There’s the physical side to being in a good place but there’s an emotional one too. Our teams have, for instance, had conversations with people from the homeless community who wished to die on the street where they felt most at home. Patients from the traveller community have wanted to die within their circle of support and we have even had one patient who wanted to die on the narrow boat which they called home. And our teams help to support them emotionally as well as supporting family members during what can be an incredibly difficult and frightening time. The pandemic, of course, The pandemic has significantly impacted on the care some people choose to have

because their options were not the same as before Covid-19 took hold,” Jo explained. “It increased the amount of patients choosing to die at home because people were afraid to leave their homes. In some case people chose to be isolated as they were afraid to access help from external health care providers in fear of catching Covid but at St Luke’s we continued to we provide our full assurance that patient care was still our primary concern, be it on our In Patient Centre or in the community.” It is this very personalised approach to end of life care that teams across the whole of St Luke’s work hard to embrace and accommodate. The St Luke’s Community Engagement Worker Naureen Khan has been working with different groups throughout the city on a ‘My End of Life’

programme, which has given the St Luke’s team chance to explore and understand the different protocols involved for a whole range of ethnic groups to ensure their wishes for end of life care are honoured. And for the St Luke’s Chaplaincy and Bereavement services, that enhanced knowledge all contributes to a service that is designed to reflect the needs of an increasingly diverse society. “We want people of all ages and ethnicities to be in a good place when they die – physically, emotionally and with the right care in place,” said Jo. “Getting there means having some important conversations, and taking some careful decisions and Dying Matters Awareness Week is here to encourage that to happen and help to remove some of the taboos that still exist around this very important subject.”

According to my therapist, I have extreme trouble verbalizing my emotions. Can’t say I’m surprised. Yesterday I purchased a world map...gave my wife a dart and said to her “throw this and wherever it lands, I’m taking you for a holiday”. Turns out we’re spending three weeks behind the fridge. A guy walks into his doctors office saying, “Help me, doctor, I’m shrinking.” “Hold on,” says the doctor, “Be a little patient.” I called the doctor “My wife is going into labour! What should I do?” “Is this her first child?” he asked. “No, this is her husband.” I don’t want to brag, but I finished the jigsaw puzzle in a week... ...and it said 2-4 years on the box. My ex wife cheated on me with her deaf best friend. Honestly, I should have seen the signs. The World Health Organization has declared that dogs cannot transmit Coronavirus, and there is no reason to quarantine dogs anymore. W.H.O. let the dogs out! I went to the pharmacy yesterday and asked the assistant what gets rid of the Coronavirus. She said ammonia cleaner. I said sorry I thought you worked here.

kennel club issues rogue breeder warning

Following a year of emergency Covid-19 laws meaning puppies could be delivered to new homes, The Kennel Club is urging vigilance from would-be owners as domestic travel restrictions across Great Britain relax. The dog welfare organisation has always urged potential new owners to avoid buying a puppy if the seller is offering to deliver it, as this allows rogue traders and puppy farms to hide horrific breeding conditions from view. During the coronavirus pandemic however, whilst everyone was instructed to ‘stay at home’, emergency guidance meant that breeders could deliver puppies to their new homes in certain situations. With travel restrictions relaxing in Scotland from today (26 April), the final domestic easing of the travel rules within Great Britain, The Kennel Club is warning of ongoing puppy deliveries and urging more vigilance from potential new puppy owners, who should now collect their puppy from where it was bred and raised, with its littermates and mum. “Following a year of confusing and difficult Covid-19 rules for breeders, rescue organisations and potential new owners – alongside a huge demand for dogs – it’s crucial that the general public is clear on how to responsibly buy a puppy, as restrictions ease,” commented Dr Ed Hayes,

Head of Policy and Public Affairs at The Kennel Club. “If you’re buying a puppy which you’ve found online, travel restrictions across Great Britain now allow you to follow usual responsible puppy buying advice: Do not agree to have your puppy delivered to you or meet half-way. Ask for more than one virtual viewing to see where puppies have been brought up and the litter interacting with mum. Following relevant Covid guidelines, meet the breeder, puppies and mum outdoors ahead of purchase. The organisation is urging the public to stay up-to-date on guidance within their area and to follow its three top puppy buying tips as travel restrictions ease and we edge back to ‘normal’. Whilst there is nothing wrong with seeing an advert for a puppy online, always then: • See the puppy’s home environment and the puppy interacting with its mum and littermates. Do this virtually and ideally in-person, in a secure outdoor space or garden • Don’t accept a puppy being delivered to your door – rogue traders can hide behind the anonymity of the internet • Don’t pay a deposit without seeing the puppy or buy from a breeder who is trying to sell the puppy as quickly as possible – this should ring alarm bells

mums praise sheffield day centre Two mums have praised specialist day care staff at Sheffield Day Services for creating a “happy bubble” that supported their disabled children during the pandemic. Mums Mandy Gale and Caroline Hallgarth appeared on BBC Radio Sheffield to describe how the Cygnet Health Care-run facility had provided a lifeline to care for their children, including allowing Caroline – a nurse caring for patients throughout the pandemic – to work long hours. Caroline’s daughter Isabel, age 20, is nonverbal and has learning difficulties and autism, while Mandy’s son Connor has a diagnosis of autism with limited speech. Sheffield Day Services is based in Spa Lane, Woodhouse and specialises in supporting people with a learning disability, and those with complex health needs and physical disabilities. Nurse Caroline said: “I can tell when I take Isabel to the centre that she loves to go. She can go for a walk every day, she has massages on her feet, she has a two-course lunch, they play her favourite music. She loves Adele and Little Mix and has a dance to that. They read her stories and they write it all in a book for me so that I know what she’s been doing.” She added: “Other day services didn’t keep going through the pandemic. Cygnet did, and it’s made a huge difference to me.” Now that Sheffield Day Services has been able to open its doors again to service users, Caroline says staff have “gone above and beyond” to protect Isabel. “They’ve completely reassured me, they’re in full PPE. I’m not allowed in the building, I

drop her off at the door, and I know that they keep her safe.” Mum Mandy added: “Connor needs a very structured routine to lower his anxieties and all these things are met. The people that work there are an absolute joy. They’re so engaging with Connor. I couldn’t ask for anything else. It’s more than a support for Connor, it brings it all to us and we’re in a happy bubble which is all down to Cygnet and the support, and it’s amazing. We couldn’t live without them.” Talking to show host Toby Foster at BBC Radio Sheffield’s breakfast programme, Helen Ullyatt, Manager of the Sheffield Day Service, said she was overwhelmed by the praise. “It makes me feel quite emotional to be absolutely honest with you,” she said. “We were instructed to close initially in the March last year because it was deemed unsafe to stay open with the numbers in Sheffield. The staff were all redeployed at very short notice to help out in other facilities so they had to learn new roles in environments that weren’t familiar to them, but they rose to that challenge. They’re an inspiration. We’ve been keeping in contact constantly with our families, making sure they got the support. Even just a chat on the phone to someone can mean the world to a family. If they needed any shopping collecting, we could go out and get shopping for them. Then we did garden visits so the staff went out in their PPE and went on to people’s garden and did activities, to tell stories, social interactions, just so that we could keep that familiar face. That was the most important thing to us and for them.”
