at last - live music is back! ECO SOFAS Following on from Monday’s annoucement from the Prime Minister, we can at last look forward to getting back in to our favourite pubs & clubs - and enjoying live music at last! And inside this week - we have six pages of venues - all reopening with live artists back on stage where they belong! It’s been a long time coming, but the end seems to be in sight as the vaccination program rolls out across the country and the scientists suggest we can finally begin
to meet up safely. Of course not everything is back to normal yet - there will be the “Rule of Six’ indoors and many venues will still be offering reduced capacity and table service only. Sheffield led the way with the recent World Championships at the Crucible, providing much need data to suggest that the pandemic is weakening its hold on the UK, and the public can be safely trusted to follow the rules and protect each other. belmont house a hit with residents’ relatives Staff at Belmont House Care & Nursing Home in Stocksbridge have received high praise from the family of a residents who have been delighted with the care and support their loved one has received. Ninety-four-year-old Millicent Darnill has been a resident at Belmont House for two years and before the Covid pandemic her son Jim was a regular visitor to the home and spent many hours with his mother experiencing the care provided first-hand. Jim explains; “Before the
lockdown I spent a lot of time in Belmont with my mother, playing cards and dominoes, singing along with the entertainers, sitting in on the chairobics exercises and encouraging my mother and the others to join in, and even sometimes leading the hymn singing when the vicar from Bolsterstone church visited to hold a service. I’d often take my guitar and sing a couple of songs for everybody to sing along with, and I’ve played at some of the fairs that have been put
on, and dragged other musicians in to join me, all free of charge. So, I soon got to know everybody, staff and residents, and honestly, I think the care that your staff provide really is first rate! Just as an aside I’d like to say that things like the fairs and especially the wonderful trips out in the minibus are a huge boost to the residents state of mind and wellbeing. There’s a real excitement and a buzz in the air when everybody is getting into the minibus for a trip out somewhere. It’s
great just to be there and see the look on the residents faces! You can really see the pleasure they get from it. I’m so pleased we picked Belmont House for my mother. There are other homes in the area, they’re very highly regarded, and we hear wonderful things about them from friends who have relatives living there, but I’m convinced your staff at Belmont House place it above all the others. It really is a loving, caring, family environment and it’s just so comforting to
know that my mother is House Care & Nursing receiving such excellent Home please contact Joanne Coldwell on care.” 01142 831 030 or email belmonthouse@ For more information countrycourtcare.com. about life at Belmont

urgent appeal for research donors to help
Sheffield is set to host a ‘pop up’ blood donation centre to help a ground-breaking COVID-19 research study – and scientists involved in the project are urgently calling for people in the area who caught the virus and did not require hospital treatment to volunteer to help. From Saturday (15th May), eligible participants from the city and surrounding areas will be able to donate a blood sample at a temporary, COVID-secure centre at the Crowne Plaza Royal Victoria Sheffield (Victoria Station Road, S4 7YE). If they don’t wish to travel, the scheme also offers volunteers the option of making an appointment for a nurse to visit their home. The unique GenOMICC COVID-19 Study analyses the genes of people who have had the virus to discover why some experienced no symptoms while others became extremely ill. The study is already contributing to the fight again COVID, with preliminary results helping identify possible new treatments. However, for the study to continue to make progress the scientists urgently need to recruit more people from all backgrounds and are appealing to those who had the virus but didn’t require hospital treatment to sign up. Along with seeking the help of members of Asian and Black communities, they’re also keen for more men to volunteer. “The virus’ effect has been more widely felt among ethnic and minority communities, so it’s important we help those who are making such an important contribution in the fight against COVID”, said Aman Ali from Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND). “We’re encouraging everyone to take a minute to see if they’re suitable to volunteer for the study. The results will be shared internationally and offer more protection to some of the most vulnerable groups of people around the world.” The program was enthusiastically embraced in Scotland, Bradford, Preston, London, Leicester and Birmingham when similar sites were opened recently – and scientists are hoping for a similar response in Sheffield. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been recruiting critically ill patients into the nationwide study, which is being led by Genomics England in partnership
with the University of Edinburgh. The Trust is currently one of the top three recruiting sites. “Over the last 12 months we’ve been caring for thousands of patients who have been severely affected by Covid-19. Yet some people who have had the virus experience milder symptoms, or none at all,” said Professor Gary Mills Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Principal Investigator for the study in Sheffield. “Sadly, Covid’s effect in the community has disproportionately been felt by people of Asian and Black heritage and this study provides us with an opportunity to try to better understand why. We strongly encourage the city’s ethnic and minority communities to support this study to help us discover new ways of beating the virus.” “We’re issuing an urgent appeal for more volunteers from all walks of life – and in particular for people from the region’s Asian and Black communities – to come forward and register as soon as possible,” explains Dr Kenneth Baillie, the study’s Chief Investigator. “We need to find people who tested positive for COVID but experienced either mild or no symptoms and didn’t require hospital treatment. For comparison purposes, it’s important that these volunteers are similar in age, gender and ethnicity of those people who were severely affected and hospitalised.” The quicker this research can be completed, the faster we can solve the COVID puzzle and protect vulnerable people,” said Professor Sir Mark Caulfield, Chief Scientist at Genomics England. “Genetic research into COVID-19 is now playing an increasingly important role in our fight against the virus, enabling us to identify new forms of the virus and develop treatments. The findings from the GenOMICC COVID-19 Study will improve the treatment, care and outcome for those most at risk, as well as helping to prioritise future vaccinations and lower the number of deaths.” The research project is open to anyone who tested positive to COVID but experienced mild or no symptoms and didn’t require hospital treatment – volunteers can register online.
Tesco is encouraging charities and community groups in Yorkshire to apply for funding for local projects that matter to them. The newly-rebranded Tesco Community Grants scheme will award grants to charities and community organisations whose focus is on helping children and families access the food and support they need for a good start in life. Eligible projects will include breakfast or holiday lunch clubs, food banks, youth clubs or schools. From July, three community groups in the area will be selected to receive votes from the public to decide which project receives the most funding. A total of £2million in the next three months in funding pots of £500, £1000 and £1500 will be available for the shortlisted projects, and Tesco customers will be able to choose which one receives the most funding by voting in store every time they shop. Originally launched in 2016 as Bags of Help, the scheme has supported over 36,000 community groups with more than £86million in grants since 2016, including 2,000 sports teams and 1,400 groups supporting vulnerable older people. In 2020 alone, more than 10,000 groups were awarded grants of over £7.9m by Tesco throughout the UK. Keith Jackson, Tesco Community Grant Manager at Tesco, said: “Over the years, we’ve been delighted
to have been able to support so many charities, community groups and organisations from every corner of the UK. The help and support they provide to families and children is now more important than ever. We’re encouraging groups in Yorkshire to apply for funding as we hope to see the fantastic community work they provide to continue long into the future” Graham Duxbury, Groundwork’s UK Chief Executive, said: “The last year has been extremely difficult for everyone, and that includes community groups and charities who will have been hit particularly hard by the pandemic. Many groups have seen a surge in demand for their services while volunteer numbers decrease, which has caused mounting pressure. We’re delighted to be working with Tesco to provide these much-needed funds, which will help to support local communities as we recover from the pandemic.” The Tesco Community Grants will support thousands of local community projects and good causes across the UK. The scheme is open to registered charities and not-for-profit organisations, so if you are an eligible organisation then apply for a grant now. If you are a Tesco customer or colleague, you can nominate a cause that you’d like to see supported. To apply for a Tesco Community Grant, visit https:// tescocommunitygrants.org.uk/

CIU Vice-President calls for Sheffield’s ‘60s ‘superclubs’ continuing support for clubs relaunched for festival The Vice-President of the Union, Ken Roberts CMD ACM, is urging the UK and Welsh Governments to ensure clubs have the ongoing support they need to get back on their feet following 14 months of uncertainty. As clubs get ready to offer inside service once again from May 17, albeit with a number of restrictions in place, including table service only and social distancing measures, Mr Roberts warned that it may take a significant period of time for clubs to get back to the level of trade they enjoyed pre-pandemic and therefore they may require further financial aid until then. He said: “In all fairness, I can’t fault the support that the UK and Welsh Governments have given to clubs during the pandemic but I would request that the support continues until our clubs re-establish themselves and doesn’t just get cut off. “They can’t expect clubs to reopen and suddenly return to their prepandemic levels of trade – it’s going to take some months of continued support.” “The CIU has recently taken part in Committee of Registered Clubs Associations (CORCA) meetings, alongside other similar
club organisations, through which we’ve communicated to the Government that we have grave concerns about how clubs are going to be able to bounce back once they reopen, so hopefully they will take notice.” Mr Roberts, who is also the President of the South Wales Branch, voiced his concerns about the plight of Welsh clubs who have been working to a different reopening timetable to their English counterparts. “The Welsh Government has been more cautious in many respects than the UK Government with outdoor hospitality only being introduced at the end of April,” he said. “Many clubs in Wales either don’t have any outdoor facilities or have very limited outside space so will not reopen until they can serve their members indoors. “The information that Welsh clubs have received so far regarding indoor opening, including what restrictions are going to be in place, has been very vague, which makes it very difficult to plan ahead. “As a result, many Welsh clubs are feeling apprehensive at the moment about reopening and would like more clarity so they can look ahead with confidence.”
They were like chalk and cheese in the 1960s but these days they’re renowned as two of Sheffield’s most decade-defining venues. King Mojo and the Esquire – two hugely popular teenage clubs that brought acts to the city spanning the Kinks to Jimi Hendrix - are being brought back to life later this week as part of the online ‘Talking About Our Generation’ festival. The two clubnights are being curated by Sheffield’s Dirty Stop Outs. This Thursday, May 13th, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, it will be a chance to attend a virtual King Mojo night where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the iconic club opened by Geoff and Peter Stringfellow in 1964. The venue, which used to be sited at 555 Pitsmoor Road, attracted early performances from acts spanning Stevie Wonder to Ike & Tina Turner. The following night, Friday, May 14th, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, it will be the turn of the Esquire. The venue, which used to be sited in the building now occupied by the Leadmill nightclub on Leadmill Road, was a launchpad for many future Sheffield stars – Vance Arnold and the Avengers (Vance Arnold would soon be better known as Joe Cocker and achieve global success) were the resident band. Local boy Dave Berry – who
achieved massive success in the era – was also a popular performer. Dirty Stop Outs’ Neil Anderson said: “The sixties was the era that Sheffield’s cultural influence really began to be felt both nationally and internationally. The King Mojo and the Esquire were a huge force and their influence continues to be felt over 50 years since they both shut. This festival is a chance to find out what all the fuss was about or a chance to re-live it if you were there in the first place. It has been a privilege to be involved.” Neil Anderson wrote the city’s celebrated ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1960s Sheffield’ which tells the stories of both venues. Tickets for both club nights are free. They are available from: www.dirtystopouts.com

BINGO & LUCKY 5 - SATURDAY NIGHT & SUNDAY LUNCHTIMES LA PLATA SOCIAL CLUB PIONEERS NEW SYSTEM THAT KEEPS MEMBERS SAFE AS WELL AS SAVING ON THEIR BILLS La Plata Social Club in Sheffield are the very first Club to have three Pure Air Systems installed in their Main Bar Area and Club Lounge in South York. The C.I.U Club that has been established for many years now and ran by Brian Helliwell the Club Secretary and his Committee. In response to the Covid 19 this year Amy at Smart Energy Projects contacted Brian to advise on the potential risks to his staff and members when heating certain areas with a mix of both Air-Conditioning and Gas Fired Heating. The World Health Organisation announced on July 9th that the Corona Virus can now be transmitted through the air and the virus particulates will remain infectious for up to 6 hours in a room area if somebody is positive for the virus. Brian was concerned for his Committee and Members as relies on airconditioning to heat his bar area and
understood that these units will only ever continue to re-circulate the air within the room posing a greater risk to his members when socialising. Brian new that the Club needed a quick solution to this problem to help provide protection and assurance to both staff and members
who mainly are over 70 years of age and vulnerable due to having other respiratory health conditions. The Club needed systems to kill the virus in the air and on all surface areas as Brian stated that it was incredibly difficult to maintain social distancing whilst constantly cleaning surface
The Solution Three Pure Air Systems were installed into the Bar and Lounge Area of the Club which were installed in just a morning and will now provide the Club with Pure Air and Sanitisation of all surface areas 24/7. Costing a total of just £76 per year to run all three systems and to provide pure clean air to the Club Rooms eliminating all known viruses by up to 99%+ these were a no
brainer and a life line to the Club who wished to continue to provide safe Covid Safe Areas for Members to socialise amongst each other whilst having a drink or playing the odd occasional Bingo. The Club now do not need to keep windows open when it’s freezing outside and can use their Air-Conditioning safely without any potential risks of re-circulating the
areas 24/7 which isn’t practically possible at all times and his Committee were worried that their air-conditioning units when being used to heat would cause an even bigger problem as they couldn’t continue to leave all their windows open in the Winter.

down as owls millers late heartbreak fail to win An afternoon which offered hope and showed fighting spirit ultimately ended in heartache for the Owls. Twice in the match Wednesday led against Derby, only for a late penalty to tie the scores at 3-3 and despite six minutes of injury time a winner could not be found. A long delay early in the game, after Waghorn collided heavily with a post, meant that the game at pride Park was running almost ten minutes behind Rotherham’s game at cardiff. No doubt the news of Cardiff ’s late equlaiser would have reached the pitch, meaning Derby were aware a draw was enough to secure their Championship status at the expense of their visitors. Darren Moore said the dust will settle on Wednesday’s relegation and plans to launch an immediate Championship return begin immediately. Moore, back on the touchline following his recent battle with illness, was proud of the performance but devastated with the bigger picture. He said: “We now have to face the reality but that is what we will do and move forward. We have meetings in place, they are scheduled and we have to look forward. I can honestly say our entire focus has been on this game today, it had to be. Now we know the outcome. I said to the players before the game, what with everything that’s been thrown at them this season, it’s a credit that it’s gone to the final day. It was a pulsating game that ebbed and flowed, either side could’ve won it and it proved to be Derby’s day. For me, I have one head on today and I will have a different head on tomorrow. I am committed to this task and committed to the club. I am feeling much better in myself, I have received the all clear in terms of my recovery and as far as I’m concerned, we now have to look forward. They went out there with the remit of leaving everything on the pitch and they did that today. The inquests into this season will no doubt start in the coming days, but Chairman Dejphon Chansiri was quick to issue a statement to fans following the result, and we have reproduced it below. “As your owner and chairman, I take full responsibility for everything that happens at our club. I am the leader and in good times or bad, the responsibility for Sheffield Wednesday lies with me. I am sorry to you all that we have been relegated. This was never what I anticipated when I came to Hillsborough in 2015, my vision was to take Wednesday into the Premier League. We came so close in 2016 and then again in 2017 and since then the times have not been so good at all. In football, in sport, there are highs and there are lows and right now, this is the lowest I have felt and I know you will be feeling the same. There are no guarantees in football, we have tried our best but our best was not good enough. We must now face the reality of what lies ahead and for next season at least, that is League One. We must pick ourselves up from the floor and move forward in a positive way. We have had plans for both scenarios and now our immediate future is clear, we can start to put those plans into place. I can pledge that as chairman, I will give everything I can and offer as much support as possible to everyone as we try and achieve promotion at the first attempt. There are issues we must address in the short and long term and some things will not happen overnight. Darren Moore will be the manager for sure and the moment I mention Darren’s name, I must wish him all the very best as he continues his recovery from illness. Health must come before anything else, as this past year has taught us more than ever. I would like to say thank you to the coaching staff who stepped up in Darren’s absence and also to everyone who has worked so hard during what has become one of if not the most challenging season in the history of Sheffield Wednesday. It has ended in the worst possible way but we have to look for the light at the end of the tunnel. We will rebuild on the pitch, and off it, the day when fans return cannot come soon enough. I say thank you to our fans, it has been soulless without having you following the team home and away and I know all clubs say the same but we have missed your support so much. Like all of you, I hope that life can return to normal soon and in football, that will mean having our fans back into Hillsborough and following the team around the country in the numbers that you do. You do not deserve this end to a season that in so many ways we will want to forget but in others we can look back on in time as a turning point for the revival of our club.
“If only....” must be the feeling circluating around the New York Stadium today as the Millers look back at the late equaliser which condemned them to a season back in League One. Within eight minutes Rotherham gave themselves a lifeline, and as events unfolded at Pride Park and the clock ticked down, most fans must indeed have felt that despite the odds being stacked against them for much of the latter part of the season, the great escape was actually possible. But with only two minutes of regualr time on the clock, a speculative effort from Marlon Pack found the millers’ net, leaving them to rue a host of missed chances. Indeed Cardiff would have had little to complain about had the match been wrapped up by half time, such was Rotherham’s early dominance. Yet again though, the ridiculous fixture pile-up began to show as energy levels dropped Rotherham United manager Paul Warne was understandably left devastated following his side’s 1-1 draw with Cardiff City, which condemned the Millers to relegation from the Sky Bet Championship. In a rollercoaster afternoon, the Millers took the lead through Lewis Wing’s stunner inside 10 minutes, only to be pegged back with two minutes left, through Marlon Pack’s strike. With Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County playing out a 3-3 draw, the Millers would have secured survival had they won in South Wales, but it ended in heartbreak, despite a colossal effort from Warne’s side in South Wales. “I don’t know what more we could have done. I’m devastated for the lads because I said it could be a memory that they’d have forever. I feel for them, I really do,” Warne said afterwards. “I’m really hollow, I just feel for the lads. I feel for my captain, I feel for the owner and I feel for the fans. In my opinion we deserved to win the game and to concede so late on was a huge blow and didn’t allow us to come back into it. We had enough chances today to win two games and maybe, that is a microcosm of our season. We are well-organised, we are fit and we’re together but we just lacked that little bit of cutting edge in the final third. If you don’t take your chances, there is always that chance that the opposition are going to score. I don’t think we were cut open with any great play, so It is tough to take.” Warne reserved special praise for midfielder Lewis Wing, who opened the scoring with a goal of the season contender. It was a game, that in a way encapsulated the campaign for Rotherham, who squandered a host of chances before eventually being pegged back, but Warne stressed he was still proud of his side’s effort during the campaign. “It just bounced before it hit the net, it was an absolute screamer, I felt we had much harder chances than that but failed to find the target,” Warne explained. “I cannot fault the work rate from the lads. We played midweek and Cardiff didn’t, they were bringing international players on. The lads gave everything, physically and emotionally they couldn’t have given anymore. I came out of the dressing room really quick because I just wanted to thank them for their efforts. The way we’ve played in the Championship this season, I think the fans will be really proud but unfortunately we’ve fallen just short. We started the season off with a real ambition and I really believed we’d be able to retain our status and build a little bit more, unfortunately we haven’t done that. That is by no means down to any lack of effort from my staff or players, they’ve given it everything.” Chairman Tony Stewart sent out a definite message in the aftermath of the results: “We are unified, we are resolute and we are all fully focussed on making sure that we are more than ready for a promotion challenge during the forthcoming 2021/2022 Sky Bet League One campaign. Rest assured, as a Board we are totally committed in every area of this Football Club. I must put firmly on record my sincere thanks to Paul Warne, his coaching staff, the Players, the support staff at the Training Ground and the incredibly dedicated staff at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. Without their hard work, expertise and commitment to Rotherham United, what has been a hard year to navigate would have been a hell of a lot more tough.”
blades woes continue
As the Blades play out a season that can’t end soon enough, both goals conceded against Crystal Palace summed up the season in a nutshell. Despite the visitors dominating possession for much of the game, it was ultimately two wicked deflections that led to the goals being conceded. For the first, with less than a minute on the clock, a tame shot was heading comfortably towards Ramsdale until the ball caught George Baldock’s heel and looped into the opposite corner. Similarly the Blades were beginning to threaten an equaliser unitl Eze’s shot caught John Egan, again ending up in the opposite side of the goal. One bright spot was the unexpected introduction of 17 year old Daniel Jebbison on the 60 minute mark, giving the youngster a chance to show his obvious potential in more than a cameo role. Indeed, he was unlucky with a header over the bar when he showed great awareness to lose his defenders and rise unmarked to meet a cross which was just a few inches too high. There is no doubt that the new manager (whoever he may be) will be expected to dip into the pool of developing youg talent that the club currently possesses, as part of any promotion push next season. The U23 and U18 teams at the Lane seem to be filled with a crop of players that the Academy have great hopes for. Many of the squads have received international recognition at their respective levels, and indeed rumour has it that scouts from the Big Six are hovering around the players - centre half Gordon, who has been on the first team bench several times already, is one name cropping up regularly on the rumour mill. Added to that, Wales international Rhys Norrington-Davies is due back at the club this summer following a season in which he has established himself as a regular palyer at Championship level, adding to the competition on the left side of defence. It may be that, rather than a wholesale overhaul of a squad low in confidence, the injection of a new manager and the enthusiasm of youth may well be the catalyst to a campaign aimed at reclaiming the club’ s premier League status. Undoubtedly the effects of the pandameic, which have crippled United’s season in the absence of fans, may well work to their advantage next year. The benefit of parachute payments will put the Blades, West Brom and Fulham in a strong position when competing against teams who have been starved of income for over twelve months. There is a general acceptance that nobody currently at Championship level is in a postion to spend big; and there may be some bargains to be had in the transfer market if United can identify targets who can improve the squad. Midfield must surely be a priority for any incomg manager; unless there are departures the club has half a dozen strikers proven at this level, and defensive options also look plentiful, particularly if Jack O’Connell gets over his long-standing injury. However the imminent departure of John Lundstrum, and likely move for Sander Berge, leaves a midfield roster short of options and confidence, although this may be Luke Freeman’s chance to stake a claim. Proven at this level and unlikely to make his move permanent to Forest following an injury-blighted season, the new manager may well be able to exploit his undoubted ability to add the creative spark sadly lacking this year. Nevertheless this looks like the part of the roster short in numbers and options, and John Fleck and Ollie Norwood look likely to shoulder the burden yet again. Meanwhile United could potentially see the return of a familiar face next season - albeit in the away dugout.West Brom have identified Chris Wilder as an option to become their next manager if Sam Allardyce steps down at the end of the season That’s according to Sky Sports who reckon the former Sheffield United boss is on a shortlist should Sam Allardyce move on following the Baggies’ relegation. The ex-Blades manager has been linked with the Albion hot-seat on several occasions, stretching back to 2019. He has been without a club since leaving Bramall Lane in March, after five years at the club during which time he took them from League One to the defying all odds by staying in the Premier League in their first season.
