Sheffield public health chief “long way from pressing the panic button” over Indian variant Sheffield’s Director of Public Health says he’s a “long way from pressing the panic button” over the Indian Covid variant. A handful of cases of the strain have been identified in the city but it’s thought all of them were directly linked to travel. Surge testing and vaccination is being rolled out to more places today to tackle the rise in the variant, including Kirklees

in West Yorkshire. Sheffield Director of Public Health Greg Fell says there’s nothing to panic about now but warns the pandemic can flip really easily: “I’m concerned about it - it is the element of the roadmap that’s most likely to come unstuck, there’s no two ways about that - but equally I’m a long long way from pressing the panic button. I’m watching

with concern, keeping the same strategy, and keeping an eye on the situation pretty closely. “There’s a small handful but sporadic and directly related to travel. Public Health England do the work on these for us - the contact tracing of the case, the contacts, the contacts of the contacts and they test household contacts of the case. So that’s a much higher bar of protection than is

usually afforded.” Nearly three thousand cases of the Indian variant have now been identified in the UK as worries continue that it might knock the government’s plan to lift all restrictions on 21st June off course. The government has been deploying extra tests and vaccinations in parts of the UK like Bolton where cases of the Indian variant are rising. Eight new areas are

now getting the same measures.

Greg Fell was asked how

GOLD / SILVER / PLATINUM / PALLADIUM WE PAY...

likely it was the handful of cases of the Indian variant in Sheffield would lead to more: “It’s likely but not inevitable. The things that keep a lid on that are most importantly if you have symptoms stay at home and get vaccinated when you’re invited.”

I’ve got diarrhoea, my dad’s got diarrhoea and my grandad’s got diarrhoea. Runs in the family. Anyone want to swap some bum jokes? I’ve got piles.

promoted to funeral director. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years ofservice I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted, and is now a well-established business. In September 2017 I was offered the opportunity to join the team at Eric Eyre’s and to ‘move back home’, as I say, as I live local to both branches. It was, and still is, a fantastic opportunity for me to grow and develop an already friendly family run business and provide our local community with a warm and compassionate service.” Completing the team at High Green is John Walton, who has been with the company for over 20 years and Sharon Clayton who joined in July 2017, while Beverley Travis and Vera Gregory look after the branch at Sheffield Lane Top, which opened four years ago. “Our aim is to be there for our clients in every way that we can and make sure that their loved one is sent on their final journey exactly as they would have wanted. Your first point of contact will be the person you deal with throughout the process and whether the death has occurred at home, in a hospital or elsewhere, we will guide from the initial arrangement all the way through to directing the funeral. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.” If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service.

ready to return Top tips: managing noise complaints Fans to live music in an era of outdoor TRADING Since Monday 12 April, operators across the land have shown real innovation in turning their outside areas into useable spaces. From simple additions such as adding extra seats and providing blankets to keep the chills at bay, right through to building external structures with big screen TV’s and purposebuilt bars. There seems to be no end to the creative entrepreneurship taking place in the trade. Even though 17 May heralded restricted indoor reopening, and with all restrictions slated to end on 21 June, the recent investments in outside areas will no doubt see them used – and pay dividends – for years to come. And with a packed summer of sport ahead, including the postponed Euro 2020, now is an apt time for operators to put some thought into managing the prospect of receiving complaints over noise. So here are a few tips on how to manage noise related complaints that could put a dampener on your summer plans:

be risk assessed in advance. If you do not have a risk assessment, put one in place immediately. This may include considering the type of event, the location, the period of the event, the terminal hours of amplified music and where speakers will be positioned. Consider measures that you will have in place such as staff regularly monitoring noise levels at the boundaries of premises to avoid nuisance and effective dispersal of customers at the end of the event. Consider the use of an acoustic consultant to review the potential noise breakout against the intended operation of the premises. Installing a new sound system or having amplified music in areas where you would not usually do so without proper consideration of the potential noise impact could result in complaints and

enforcement action. A consultant should be able to advise on additional measures to put in place to mitigate noise and potential nuisance to your neighbours and avoid the threat of complaints and enforcement action.

It is important to note noise complaints can be a significant risk to your business, and you could be met with enforcement action such as a Noise Abatement Notice (which if breached can result in prosecution through the Magistrates’ Court with the possibility of an unlimited fine), or your premises licence being reviewed, which can result in cutting back of your permitted hours, onerous conditions being added or, in the most serious cases, revocation. So always ensure you get on the front foot where you are made aware of complaints from local residents.

If you have residential or business neighbours, it is important to maintain good working relationships. Keep them aware of any events that might be taking place at your premises. If the complaint has already been escalated to the relevant licensing and environmental health officers, ensure you liaise with them to get the full details of the complaints. Investigate the complaints to ensure they relate to your premises and take a proactive approach in dealing with the complaint and finding a solution to prevent further problems. Ideally all events that are taking place, particularly those utilising outside areas, should

Events “no riskier than shopping”, initial pilot data reveals Initial findings from the Event Research Programme suggests events without masks and social distancing can be as safe as going to a restaurant or shopping centre, The Times has reported. Live events were able to resume on 17 May with capacity restrictions and the requirement of familiar mitigations such as face coverings and social distancing, with the Government’s roadmap targeting a full lifting of restrictions on 21 June. The paper has reported that preliminary data says that with pre-event screening, improved ventilation and other mitigating factors the risk of virus transmission can be “significantly reduced”. This suggests that some manner of ‘Covid-status certification’ may be needed from 21 June, at least on a temporary basis. This would mean anyone attending an event – or nightclub – would either need to present proof of vaccination, proof of a recent negative test, or proof of natural antibodies. The government is yet to make a final decision.

The Walkley Cottage recently expanded it’s garden with new outside bar after re-opening On 23 April, associations and organisers from across the entire events industry backed the idea of Covid-status certification so long as the government clarified that it would be only a temporary measure and did not add an extra cost burden to an already stretched industry. The Times reported that a government source said the results from the trials had been “encouraging”, with further pilot events planned over the next month. “We are still waiting for the final bits of data, but the results so far have been very encouraging,” the source told The Times. “It will help make the case that these large events are not inherently more risky than other parts of the hospitality sector. It shows that there are things that you can do to make these settings as safe as other daily activities. “It is true that they are not going to be 100% safe, but you can lower the risk to a reasonable level.” The pilot events that have already taken place have required all attendees to take a PCR test both before and after as they were not required to wear masks or practice social distancing. There have been no reported cases of surges in positive Covid tests that can be attributed to any of the pilot events.

LIVE (livemusic.biz), the voice of live music in the UK, has released the survey results of 25,000 music fans and the results are clear: People want live music back as quickly as possible. The survey is the most detailed research yet conducted on the attitudes of UK music fans towards the return of live events and how they want them to be run in a postpandemic world. More than half of fans are ready to return to live music as soon as possible with a further 25 per cent willing to come back with safety measures in place. In further encouraging news, 85 per cent of fans are planning on attending either the same or higher numbers of music events when they reopen than before the pandemic and 55 per cent of fans have already bought tickets for live music events in the coming months. Among those that are yet to buy their tickets one third are waiting for more gigs to come on sale rather than being deterred by the pandemic. Seeing an artist that they love (91 per cent), the joy that live music brings (89 per cent) and spending time with friends (69 per cent) are the top three reasons mentioned by fans as to why they want to return to gigs. With 64 per cent stating that attending music events boosts their mental health. Music fans are largely sanguine about the majority of COVID prevention measures that are being proposed when events return. Three-quarters of those who responded said they would be happy with the idea of COVID certification to attend an event. Fans would like to see simple mitigations like hand sanitiser stations, temperature checking and one-way systems when events return but 41 per cent of respondents said they would be put off attending an event if they had to wear a face mask. The survey also revealed that music lovers turned to online events in huge numbers during the pandemic, with more than 70 per cent having seen music events online over the past year. The survey also found that one in four respondents will still want to engage with music events online after live music returns later this year. Jokanović APPOINTED BLADES BOSS Sheffield United is thrilled to welcome Slaviša Jokanović as the club’s new first team manager. The former Watford and Fulham boss has inked a three-year deal, becoming the club’s first overseas manager. The 52-year-old takes over next season. Since 2019 he has managed Al-Gharafa SC in Qatar. Jokanović boasts a formidable record in England after guiding both Watford and Fulham into the Premier League. As a player, Jokanović enjoyed a lengthy career at the top level, including tours with Partizan Belgrade, Tenerife, Deportivo La Coruna where he won the La Liga title - and Chelsea amongst others. He also earned 64 caps for Yugoslavia over an 11-year period, appearing in the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. After turning to management, he enjoyed success in his first job at Partizan, winning the league and cup double in consecutive seasons. Jokanović arrived on English shores in 2014 and led Watford to promotion to the Premier League in

his first season in charge. In 2018, he repeated the feat at Fulham, where a play-off victory over Aston Villa earned a second promotion to the top flight. On signing his Blades contract, Jokanović commented: “I’m honoured to become the manager of this historic football club and I’m grateful to Prince Abdullah bin Mosa’ad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Yusuf Giansiracusa and Stephen Bettis for trusting in me to start this new chapter for the Blades. We all share the same long-term vision, passion and ambition for Sheffield United. “I’m excited to work in English football again and I’m looking forward to getting started with the players and staff, as well as meeting our passionate, loyal supporters as we prepare for the challenge in the Championship. “I want to assure our amazing fans that we’re fully committed to helping the team achieve its goals and make you feel proud. With your support, we can make Bramall Lane a fortress and I have no doubt that your voice will make a big difference to the

Donate to the Coppinger Crowdfunder to win the boots from his final game Would you like to become the proud owner of the boots worn by James Coppinger on his final game for the club against Peterborough United? All you need to do is donate to the James Coppinger crowdfunder before 4.00pm on Friday June 4 and you will be entered into a draw to win the boots signed by the man himself. Don’t worry if you have already donated you will be automatically entered into the draw to. You can donate at: https://tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk/ en-GB/merchandiseTypes/irswt More about the crowdfunder As James Coppinger’s playing days end, Doncaster Rovers and members of the Black Bank, Supporters Board, Supporters Club and Supporters Trust have come up with some unique ways to pay homage to one of the greatest players to have worn the red and white hoops. It’s been an amazing 17-years at the club reaching nearly 700 appearances and being part of so many pivotal

team after so long without you last season. “Let’s work together to get Sheffield United back to where the club belongs.” Blades owner, Prince Abdullah, observed: “Over the past two months, the club has undertaken a rigorous recruitment process in our search for the right person to take Sheffield United forward. We’ve been keenly conscious of the importance of this decision and therefore have considered many strong candidates and have undertaken thorough due diligence. After an exhaustive evaluation, it was evident that Slaviša was the man we needed at the helm. “Once we held discussions with Slaviša, it was also abundantly clear that his ambitions were aligned with those of the club. It goes without saying, we are thrilled to have someone in charge with a CV which boasts a proven track record of success in England and abroad. We believe this appointment further underlines our commitment to ensuring success for Sheffield

United.” Acting chairman, Yusuf Giansiracusa, added: “After a trying season, this is a good day for all Blades fans. Stephen, my fellow board member Jan Van Winckel and our technical team have conducted an excellent and thorough search process and we think that the result speaks for itself. I should also like to take this opportunity on behalf of everyone at the club to express gratitude to Paul Heckingbottom for the

moments –the play-off hat-trick, that goal against Brentford. Coppinger has seen and done it all and has become synonymous with the name Doncaster Rovers. The club and fans want future generations of Rovers supporters to know why Copps meant so much to so many. Working together with fans and Copps himself, the club have launched the James Coppinger Documentary and a stadium mural. James Coppinger Documentary Actor Lewis Reeves (Unforgotten, I May Destroy You, Crazy Heads) is creating a documentary about Copps and supporters can be involved! The Doncaster-born actor grew up loving Rovers and was a teenager when Copps first donned the red and white hoops. Now, an established actor and filmmaker, Lewis is set to create a documentary which will be a love letter to Rovers’ leading appearance maker from a genuine fan. Rovers supporters will be given more “behind the scenes” access to Copps than ever before as the documentary looks back at his time club and looks ahead to what comes next. As club and fans come together to celebrate Copps and what he has meant to the club during the last two decades. Copps Corner – Celebrating a Legacy The club will be creating Copps Corner, a stadium mural dedicated to the career of James Coppinger, complete with tributes to all the key moments as well as boasting

fine job he has done during a difficult period. Paul temporarily accepted the extra responsibility without reservation, despite the obvious challenges, and through his hard work and superb professionalism, steadied the club and prepared us to move forward with confidence.” Chief executive officer, Stephen Bettis, commented: “In Slaviša we have appointed a manager who would have been on the radar of many clubs

across the world, and we believe his decision to come to Bramall Lane shows the continued global reach of the football club. It was clear from early in the conversations between the club, Slaviša and his representatives that there was a desire to make this deal happen, despite the complications of working in the pandemic, and we are delighted that the contract is signed to enable everyone to fully prepare for next season.”

facts, figures and interactive features which will homage to Copps’ 17-year Rovers playing career. The mural will be housed in the Polypipe stand, home to the Black Bank, and will be available for supporters to view on matchdays and non-matchdays. The mural will be a lasting tribute to one of the most loved players to have ever worn the Rovers shirt. To help deliver the initiatives, the club are launching a crowd-funder alongside our supporters: DONATE £25 AND RECEIVE • A framed poster signed by James Coppinger and Lewis Reeves DONATE £50 AND RECEIVE • A framed poster signed by James Coppinger and Lewis Reeves • Have your name listed on the Copps Corner mural DONATE £75 AND RECEIVE • A framed poster signed by James Coppinger and Lewis Reeves • Have your name listed on the Copps Corner mural • Claim a free ticket to the documentary premiere (date TBC) DONATE £100 AND RECEIVE • A framed poster signed by James Coppinger and Lewis Reeves • Have your name listed on the Copps Corner mural Claim a free ticket to the documentary premiere (date TBC) • Have your name listed in the end credits of the documentary • Feature in the end credits of the documentary as we film and include your own video message about Copps • 12-month subscription to A League of His own, the James Coppinger podcast and tickets to see an episode filmed live. SWFC Supporter Season Ticket update The Owls can update supporters on the current situation regarding 2019/20 Season Ticket rebates, together with some important information ahead of 2021/22. 2019/20 As previously communicated, the process for those who selected Option 8 for a cash refund has taken significantly longer than anticipated. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on every area of the club, with revenue streams decimated over the past 14 months, alongside an integration to a new ticketing system that means all refunds are being actioned manually and individually. Cashflow has been affected dramatically since March 2020 and all we can ask is for your continued patience through these most challenging of times. Refunds are being issued in chronological order when respective applications were made and although we did aim to conclude the process by this point, this unfortunately has not been possible. We apologise sincerely but can reassure all supporters who applied that refunds will be honoured as promised, at the earliest opportunity. Alternatively, and following a productive Supporters Engagement Panel meeting on Thursday evening, a suggestion was put forward to offer fans awaiting a refund the option to redeem against a ticket or retail equivalent credit. We are pleased to confirm this option will be available, which would be of enormous benefit to the club’s current cashflow situation. For supporters wishing to select this option, please email: ticketenquiries@swfc.co.uk with your name, Season Ticket ID number and preference of ticketing credit or retail credit. Relevant accounts will then be adjusted next week. 2020/21 Season Ticket holders Like all clubs, we had hoped to welcome supporters back last October but, of course, it transpired that the whole of the 2020/21 season was played out behind closed doors. Many Season Ticket holders purchased iFollow passes for home games and select evening away fixtures, with the £10 cost deducted from the final credit at the end of the campaign. For example, if you paid £455 for a Season Ticket and purchased nine iFollow passes (9 x £10 = £90) your account will be credited with £365 (£455-£90). If you paid £555 for a Season Ticket but opted for zero iFollow passes, your account will be credited with the full £555. 2021/22 Season Tickets The return of fans and relative stadium capacities remains unclear and we await Government guidance to that end. Consequently, when on sale, the first phase of Season Ticket sales for 2021/22 will be open to supporters who purchased a 2020/21 Season Ticket only due to current restrictions. Any further sale windows will be announced depending on availability. Multi-Year Season Tickets will be honoured as normal and processed by the Ticket Office, with any refunds for missed matches offered as a credit in line with the above. We will announce the new pricing strategy and sale dates in due course and once again thank you all for your patience, support and understanding.
