Mayor Dan Jarvis sets out plans to improve bus services In order to secure substantial government funding, the Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA) has agreed to bring in an ‘Enhanced Partnership’ with bus operators as an interim arrangement while other governance models – including franchising – are further explored. Under this model, the MCA, Local Authorities and operators agree shared aims and work

closely together to deliver a better transport system. Once agreed, the partnership model unlocks additional government funding as set out in the National Bus Strategy. Mayor Jarvis said: “Our bus services are critical to the future of South Yorkshire, but we need a transformation if they are going to fulfil their potential. If we build

a good system, people will use it. “This is an interim arrangement, so we can secure the funds needed, while we look at the full range of governance models, including franchising. “My bottom line is that I will back whatever structure can best deliver the fundamental change we so badly need, to build a reliable, affordable, and environmentally friendly

bus service for all of South Yorkshire. Mayor Jarvis continued: “As we know from other areas, franchising is a complicated process that can take many years, and we want to get cracking now on delivering the improvements our system is crying out for. An ‘Enhanced Partnership’ lets us start the process of reform and get results on the ground as soon as possible.

“But let me be clear, I won’t settle for anything other than a transformation of our buses.” Mayor Dan Jarvis has already invested £3.2m to make a start on upgrading the bus network in South Yorkshire, and an additional £6m to extend cheaper fares to 18 – 21 year olds. The MCA has also put forward a bid to the Levelling Up Fund worth £50m which contains a package of proposals to improve the bus services for passengers.

TONY HADLEY RETURNS TO THE CITY HALL One of the most renowned voices in British music, Tony Hadley, has announced a huge UK tour for 2022, celebrating a remarkable 40 years in music. Celebrating four decades since Tony first released music with his former band Spandau Ballet (originally planned for 2020), the tour, which will see Tony perform with his band ‘The Fabulous TH Band’, will call at 36 dates across the country that will see him performing at the Sheffield City Hall on Wednesday 16 March 2022 – tickets on general sale 10am Friday 11 June 2021 from www. sheffielcityhall.co.uk.

Tony’s unmistakeable voice still brims with passion and urgency as it first did all those years ago. Fitting for what will be a big celebration of one of the biggest voices in pop, Tony will perform tracks from across his career both as the voice of Spandau Ballet, and as a solo artist. From his beginnings at the forefront of the New Romantic movement, Tony earned himself the accolade of being one of pop’s greatest vocalists. Spandau Ballet had numerous chart-topping singles and albums all over the world, including the epic “Through the Barricades”, the

international number one “True”, and the unofficial London Olympics theme “Gold”. As a solo artist Tony has performed across the world both with his band, swing bands, and orchestras. In 2005 he was awarded a Gold Badge from the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters; whilst 2007 saw him win a new legion of fans when he appeared as Billy Flynn in Chicago on the West End stage. In 2018 Tony released his highly anticipated solo album ‘Talking To The Moon’, The album was incredibly well received and became BBC Radio 2’s Album Of The Week

and the 1st single “Tonight Belongs To Us” was Single Of The Week. Last year Tony released the brand new single ‘Obvious’, co-written with ‘Talking To The Moon’ Mick Lister, which was again playlisted on BBC Radio 2. Alongside his music career, not to mention his work in broadcasting on both radio and TV, Tony received an MBE in December 2019 in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for his charitable work for the Shooting Star Children’s Hospice. Tony presents a live Sunday morning radio show on BBC 3 Counties

Radio, and started a podcast & Youtube channel in July 2020 called ‘Stars Cars Guitars’ with Jim Cregan (awardwinning rock guitarist, songwriter and producer) and Alex Dyke (veteran British broadcaster on the tv and radio). The podcast features the trio talking about rock and roll adventures, their favourite cars and tales

mayor criticises proposed rise in fares so much to look forward to.... Mayor Dan Jarvis has hit out at a recent announcement of higher fares for public transport in South Yorkshire, which came into force this week. TravelMaster are applying a 5% price rise to their range of products, including 1-Day and 7-Day tickets purchased on board, from 7 June 2021. TravelMaster are a commercial organisation owned and operated by the region’s transport companies. The companies work together through TravelMaster to deliver multi-operator tickets. TravelMaster is independent of any single operator and is not part of any public sector body. More information here https:// www.sytravelmaster.com/about Mayor Dan Jarvis and South Yorkshire leaders wrote to the bus companies earlier this week calling on them to drop their unacceptable price hike proposals. In a letter to First and Stagecoach, the Mayor and the leaders of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield councils call the plans to increase TravelMaster fare rises an “unacceptable kick in the teeth” for South Yorkshire passengers. The South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive invested Ј17m to keep bus services running during the pandemic. The Mayoral Combined Authority has recently announced plans to extend reduced fares for young people. From June 2021 a single fare will cost 80p for everyone aged 11 – 21. The discount will remain in place for a year and is an extension of the existing concession for 18 – 21 year olds. The rise has seen significant objections from both the public and civic leaders, and came without any consultation by the travel company. In response to a statement from TravelMaster

offering to take part in talks on their unilateral 5% increase in fares planned for next week, Mayor Jarvis said: “I welcome the offer from TravelMaster to take part in talks, but there can only be one acceptable outcome. The board members who collectively took this decision – Stagecoach Yorkshire, Stagecoach Supertram, First South Yorkshire, TM Travel, Northern, and HCT Group – must cancel it before it comes into force. I do not buy for a second the idea that this unnecessary, well above inflation fare rise is being driven by a desire to “help operators reduce the burden on the taxpayer,” as TravelMaster claims. It is certainly not being driven by a need to keep operating companies solvent, given public subsidies are currently guaranteeing they will break even. The claim that fares in South Yorkshire are significantly below the national average does not match our most recent research – nor does it reflect the utterly dysfunctional complexity of fare structures in our region, itself a major barrier to users. The manner and timing of this unilateral decision is equally concerning. It comes just as we are entering into a fundamental review of the direction and structure of our bus services for the long term. The new offer of talks begs the question why there was no consultation before. The lack of concern for the wider needs of our South Yorkshire community again makes clear that our current bus service is simply not fit for purpose. I look forward to meeting TravelMaster, but its members must not wait to reverse this unacceptable decision.“

volunteers needed for food bank collection Volunteers are being sought in Yorkshire to help two leading charities support children and families this summer. From Thursday, July 15 until Saturday, July 17 charities FareShare and the Trussell Trust will be collecting long-life food in large Tesco stores across the UK as part of a special Tesco Food Collection to support children and families throughout the summer holidays. Food donated by Tesco customers during the collection will go to support food banks in the Trussell Trust’s network and to local charities supplied by FareShare, including holiday clubs providing healthy meals and activities to youngsters outside of term-time. Tesco will once again top up customer donations made in store by 20% in cash to aid the two charities in their work. Volunteers are needed to encourage shoppers to leave their donations in the collection point at the front of stores, as shoppers are more likely to donate if volunteers are present, and to spread awareness of the collection through social media. The appeal for volunteers comes ahead of Volunteers Week which celebrates the work of volunteers in the UK. Gareth Batty, Chief Executive at FareShare Yorkshire, said: “More people than ever are struggling to put food on the table and will do for months if not years to come as the economy recovers,” he said. “We have seen a huge increase in people turning to their local grassroots community groups for support and demand for food remains high. We would be incredibly grateful to anyone who is able to volunteer just two hours of their time this year to encourage more shoppers to donate much needed long-life food to those who need it most.” Emma Revie, chief executive of the Trussell Trust urged others to give their support by becoming digital volunteers and spreading

news of the collection via social media. “We’re seeing more people than ever struggling in extreme poverty and pushed to the doors of food banks because they do not have enough money to survive. This isn’t right. But over the last year, we have been overwhelmed by the support people in Yorkshire have shown towards food banks in our network by donating food at Tesco. This summer, we would be so grateful if people can share shopping lists of their local food bank’s most-needed items on their social media, support the Tesco Summer Food Collection when they are next in store, and encourage friends and family to donate. Together we can make a difference and work towards building a hunger free future.” The summer collection is in addition to the pre-Christmas Tesco Food Collection, which takes place annually at the end of November. It is the second year running that Tesco has run a summer Food Collection; following on from a special collection held last summer as the charities were faced with a rise in need caused by Covid-19. CIU President salutes hard work of clubs as June 21 heralds return to normal conditions Ahead of June 21, when club life is set to return to normal with the removal of all Coronavirus restrictions, writing in the CIU’s Club Journal Union President George Smith has paid tribute to the hard work and commitment of club members across the country who have steered their venues through 15 months of major disruption.

“It’s a real testament to the calibre of officials running CIU clubs throughout the country that they have managed to battle through this dark time and come out the other side in such a strong position. “During the pandemic, when the country was put into lockdown and our clubs were forced to shut their doors, many of our clubs instantly sprang into action to work alongside local community organisations to help vulnerable people in their area. “As you will have read multiple times in the pages of the Club Journal over the past year, many of our clubs became food distribution centres and enlisted their members to deliver vital food packages to those sheltering from the virus who perhaps did not have close family and friends to rely on for supplies. “In addition, our clubs have been used as COVID testing stations and even, in some cases,

vaccination centres, as the UK has fought back against the virus. “Against this backdrop, clubs – when allowed to open between lockdowns – have also had to adapt their trading conditions to meet the Government restrictions, investing significant club funds into COVID security measures in order to keep their members safe.” Mr Smith welcomed the imminent end of restrictions which will allow club members to meet and enjoy themselves under normal conditions. “The finances of many of our clubs are very finely balanced,” he said. “Social distancing measures, reduced capacity and table serviceonly restrictions put a major dent in the ability of clubs to meet the costs of being open. “For example, many clubs rely on vital income from hiring out function rooms for private parties but that source of income has been missing since the start of the first lockdown and will only return after the restrictions end on June 21.

“It has been very heartening to see members once again flocking back into their clubs since inside service returned on May 17 and that sense of optimism can only grow as the restrictions fall away in the coming weeks. “Clubs have been very grateful for the Government’s financial support that has come their way during the pandemic in the form of grants and loans. “It’s very important that, going forward, the Government recognises how vital non-profit making members’ clubs are to their local communities, including providing social fellowship to otherwise isolated people, and give us the chance to recover fully. “As a Union, we will continue to press the Government at the highest level on the key issues which affect our member clubs’ ability to serve their members and local communities and ensure that our member clubs’ collective voice is heard by the powers-that-be.”

BRAMALL LANE PROCESSION FOR FORMER CAPTAIN LEN BADGER The funeral of legendary Sheffield United former captain Len Badger will take place on Friday 11th June at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium at 12:30pm. The funeral cortege will pass through Len’s beloved Bramall Lane via the Cherry Street car park, arriving at

approximately 11:50am and pausing at the Players’ Entrance where, following club tradition, a floral tribute will be presented on behalf of the owner, directors, players, staff and supporters of Sheffield United in memory of one of our greatest sons. There

will be a minute’s refection before the cortege moves on. Please note that, due to current restrictions, a strictly limited number are allowed at the service, and we respectfully ask those members of the wider United community

Owls confirm first leg of pre-season The Owls can confirm the first leg of our pre-season schedule ahead of the 2021/22 campaign. Wednesday will regroup following the summer recess and travel to a world class training facility in Wales on Monday 28 June. Darren Moore’s men will spend 10 days in Wales as preparations for the new season get underway. Our final day at the state-of-the-art complex will see the Owls face Scottish Premiership giants Celtic in a behind closed doors friendly. The game takes place on Wednesday 7 July, with kick-off at 3.00pm. The Owls faced the Bhoys in a 1993 pre-season fixture when Paul Warhurst scored for Trevor Francis’ side at Parkhead in a 1-1 draw. Further details of the Owls pre-season itinerary will be confirmed in due course.

The Badger family have asked that those wishing to remember Len do so by making a donation to the British Heart Foundation via Alfred Dunham and Son, 56 Snape Hill, Dronfield, Sheffield S18 2GL. giftofhope.bhf.org.uk/InMemory/Leonard-Badger

HILLSBOROUGH Olosunde set for OBITUARY | Adam Curtis Close excited for Pitch renovations fresh start AESSEAL MILLERS underway

departure

Rotherham United can confirm that full back Matt Olosunde will depart AESSEAL New York Stadium this summer. The American defender was offered fresh terms by Millers boss Paul Warne last month, but has opted to turn down the contract on the table as he looks to pursue a new challenge elsewhere. The 23-year-old signed for the Millers in the summer of 2019 from Manchester United and went on to make a total of 72 appearances in Rotherham colours. His highlights include helping the team to promotion from Sky Bet League One in his maiden campaign in South Yorkshire, as well as scoring his first ever career goal against Everton in the Emirates FA Cup at the turn of the year. Rotherham United boss Paul Warne was keen to place on record his thanks to the outgoing defender following confirmation that he would be moving on to pastures new. “On behalf of everyone here, I would like to say what a pleasure it has been to work with Matty for the last couple of years. “As we try to with every player that comes through the door, we have worked on making him a better player than when he joined us and I hope that he agrees that we have been successful in doing so. “He leaves the club with absolutely no animosity as he looks to pursue a new challenge somewhere else and goes very much with our blessing. Matty and his representatives felt as though it was time for a fresh start and are hopeful that he can secure a deal to continue playing in the Championship or at similar standard somewhere else in the world - something we totally understand. “Matty is a good lad who has grown in confidence both on the pitch and off it and I hope that our footballing paths cross again in the future.” Everyone at Rotherham United would like to thank Matt for his contribution during his time at the football club and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

Everyone at Rotherham United has been deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former Kit Man Adam Curtis. Adam joined the Millers during our time at Don Valley Stadium and was a part of the journey which saw the club return to Rotherham and the AESSEAL New York Stadium when it was opened in 2012, enjoying promotion from Sky Bet League Two and Sky Bet League One whilst on the staff in 2012/13 and 2013/14. He was a part of the backroom team during the managerial tenures of Andy Scott and Steve Evans and was a popular figure amongst everyone at Rotherham United. Adam was popular with players, coaches and club staff alike and is pictured here with current boss Paul Warne during his time as Kit Man with the Millers Adam was a friendly, larger-than-life character whose presence was always noticeable in the way in which he could fill a room with his infectious personality and the news of his passing comes as a shock to us all here at Rotherham United. We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to all of Adam’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. Rest in Peace. Once a Miller, Always a Miller.

Ben Close says he’s excited for a new challenge after joining Rovers on a three-year deal. The central midfielder arrives from fellow Sky Bet League One side Portsmouth, and says he is ready for the next chapter in his career. He said: “It feels amazing to be here, to join a club like Doncaster is a really exciting challenge and one I can’t wait to start. “I was offered a new deal at Portsmouth but I felt I was at a stage in my career where I needed a fresh start. “Myself and my family are really excited to start this new chapter, I think the move can develop me as a person and a player.” Close says manager Richie Wellens played a crucial role in bringing him to the Keepmoat Stadium. He added: ““It feels like naturally the right step for me, the manager has showed how much he wants me and that was a big factor. “He had a massive part to play and having played against his teams I can’t wait to fit into the way he wants to play. “No matter who is in charge here, it’s a club that likes to play good football, and once I knew of the interest I couldn’t turn it down.”

With the football season at an end, renovations of the Hillsborough pitch and those at our Middlewood Road Training Facility are well underway. Wednesday’s groundsmen are hard at work making sure both venues will be in thriving condition in time for the players returning to action. The renovations are very much welcome, as last summer’s plans were halted due to repercussions from COVID-19. The re-start of the 2019/20 campaign in June left no time to regenerate the pitches ahead of the new season, but with a whole summer ahead this time round, the pitches will receive the TLC they require. Tons of sand and grass seed will be used to restore the sites, with Koro machines currently stripping the old turf to make way for the new seeds. Head groundsman, Tim Watt, said: “It’s great to get these renovations underway and look forward to next season. “We can now rejuvenate the Desso fibres, improve the drainage and look forward to healthy pitches at both sites.” Tim was also keen to heap praise on his groundsman team, Leighton Lindley, Ewan Doman and Ben Robinson. He added: “The lads did great last season to maintain the pitches despite no summer renovations, they work hard all year round and deserve a lot of credit.”
