are co-operatives the key to local recovery? The Sheffield City Region is the first region to partner with the Ownership Hub to grow resilient and inclusive businesses through employee and worker ownership. As Covid restrictions ease across England, focus moves to the economic recovery of businesses hit hard by the pandemic. Today (22 June 2021) a new national initiative aiming to support businesses, advisers and regions to grow employee and worker ownership is launched. The Sheffield City Region

is the first region to commit to growing the number of worker and employee owners in this way. Mayor Dan Jarvis said: “This is a hugely exciting opportunity. Not just because it gives us the chance to boost our support for co-ops and employee ownership, but because it will help to weave the thread of co-operation through our plan for economic recovery and renewal in South Yorkshire. It is an integral part of a greater effort to not just create a more dynamic,

productive and resilient economy, but to reform its structure – to change the system in a way which makes it fairer, more inclusive, and better able to serve the aspirations and needs of the people of South Yorkshire. It complements other threads of that vision – linking support for wider ownership to reformed procurement, incentives around investments in companies, the creation of a business charter, community wealth building, stronger devolution and

democracy, and a just carbon transition.” The Ownership Hub is a partnership between the Employee Ownership Association (EOA) and Co-operatives UK, as part of their campaign to create more than 1 million good jobs by 2030 through businesses giving employees a stake and say. There are around 1,100 worker and employee owned businesses in the UK. Together they contribute over £40 billion to the UK economy and provide more than 200,000 jobs. Rose Marley, CEO

of Co-operatives UK said “We’re delighted to welcome the Sheffield City Region as the first of many regional partners, and we’re already talking to other areas that recognise the value of worker co-ops and employee ownership in creating a fairer, more inclusive economy. The pandemic has shone a light on inequalities across the UK, and workers owning an equal share of businesses is an effective and practical way to redress this balance of power.”

miners’ life exhibition Wakefield artist, Seanna Doonan tells the story of Yorkshire’s mining community with her Shine a Light exhibition, a vibrant collection of work depicting miners at work, at home and at play. Growing up in a family of musicians, Seanna is inspired by the folk songs of childhood, tales of the Miners’ Strike and the social struggles of the city’s working class. She explains: “It’s impossible to look at the history of Wakefield without acknowledging the deep mining roots embedded within, almost everyone has a

story to tell. I’ve always found these stories so interesting, so important, that I’ve naturally wanted to create an honest portrayal of that time, that community.” Rebecca Hudson, Curator of Art & Photography at the National Coal Mining Museum said “Seanna’s process often begins with a story, photo, or memory, which form an initial sketch. Using pen and ink, the illustrations develop and lead onto a process of experimentation using print, paint, and digital colour. Her work is very different to much of the work we have in our

art collection and it is always good to bring in a different perspective of the mining community” The Shine a Light Exhibition will run until 2 January 2022 and admission is FREE. Shine a Light will be at the National Coal Mining Museum from Wednesday June 16th to Sunday January 2nd 2022. Seanna Doonan studied illustration at the University of Huddersfield and holds a Masters in Authorial Illustration from the University of Falmouth. Wakefieldbased, she specialises in mural art and illustration

and finds her inspiration in her home town and in the historical and sociopolitical struggles of the working class. The National Coal Mining Museum’s attractions

also include further exhibitions depicting mining life, our pit ponies, an adventure playground, nature trail, demonstrations, indoor soft play, our gift shop

and lovely café. We are open 10am to 4pm from Wednesday to Sunday. The museum is FREE but, as an independent charity, donations are always much appreciated.

My laptop was making funny noises today, it sounded like it was singing... Probably because it’s a Dell.

I just opened a kitchen cupboard and loads of Omega 3 capsules fell on my head. I’m alright though, just some super-fish-oil injuries.

Sheffield is renowned for its independent creatives and innovators, with many local businesses across all sectors setting standards on breaking the mould and doing things differently. The pandemic has presented huge challenges for both small independents and well-established institutions, but they have responded in true Sheffield style and are coming back fighting. Make Yourself at Home was established in June 2020 by Sheffield City Council to help promote local services and encourage residents to keep supporting the local economy. Campaign materials have been made available to all local businesses so they can get involved, with ongoing initiatives in line with the restrictions at each stage. This has included drives to ‘Shop Online’ from Sheffield independents at the height of restrictions, ‘Shop Local’ when non-

businesses and organisations has been essential in their ability to bounce back and they have shown in return their commitment to getting it right by demonstrating covid compliance. In recent weeks, Make Yourself at Home has rolled out a citywide advertising campaign to support the re-opening of businesses, hospitality, and indoor attractions. This continues with messages such as ‘So much to catch up on’ and ‘rediscover Sheffield’, as the campaign highlights ways people can now enjoy themselves in a safe way across the city. Officers have also been working tirelessly to support businesses, working across every high street, helping them adapt to guidance, making them aware of government grant schemes and supporting businesses to recover. Hundreds of businesses have got involved and benefitted from the supportive tools and services available, working collectively to promote Sheffield’s best assets, create enjoyable experiences and support each other through a very difficult time. Enforcement teams have also been making compliance visits to check that businesses are operating as they should be and to speak with staff about what additional support might be required. Last week 92% of business visits showed them to be fully covid-secure.

As a tribute to Cllr Pat Midgley and her commitment to community and support for the regeneration of Park Hill, joint venture partners Urban Splash and Places for People have organised with Sheffield City Council to rename Norwich Street at Park Hill, Pat Midgley Lane. An informal tribute event was held at Park Hill on Wednesday 16 June, 60 years to the day when Park Hill was officially opened by Sheffield City Council, where representatives from the community will join Pat’s family and friends to unveil a copy of the new street sign. Cllr Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, Park Hill ward councillors, Urban Splash and the family will say a few words about Pat’s legacy. Family members attending include her husband, Don, and children Joanna and Neil. Pat was a Labour councillor for 33 years and was dedicated to the City of Sheffield, especially Park Hill that is in the Manor Castle Ward where she was born, raised and lived her whole life. She was also a former Lord Mayor, magistrate and school governor for more than 50 years. Pat was also honoured with a Woman of Sheffield award in 2019 hosted by the Sheffield Star. She was Chair of Housing in the 1990’s and spearheaded Park Hills’ application for English Heritage Grade II listed status, fielding criticism at the time from a sceptical public about the benefits of such a move. She was the first serving politician in the UK known to have died from coronavirus and her last political act was to vote for Sir Keir Starmer in the Labour leadership race on Saturday 28 March 2020 - a day before she died and three days after testing positive for Covid-19. Mark Latham, Regeneration Director on behalf of the joint venture said: “Personally, two things particularly stand out in my memories of Pat: first, she always treated everyone with exactly the same warmth and kindness and respect, regardless of who they were - whether an “ordinary” member of the public at a Park Hill gathering or a visiting ministerial dignitary. To Pat, no one was just “ordinary”, every individual mattered. And that brings me to my second memory, which is that Pat constantly reminded all of us who have worked on the regeneration

of Park Hill over the years to always keep people at the centre of the transformation, to remember and focus on how all of the decisions and actions have and will affect the individuals and families of Park Hill now and in the future. I am genuinely so delighted that with the help of Pat’s family, the city council and our many other partners, it has been possible to organise this permanent way of remembering and honouring this very special lady who dedicated her life to the people of Park Hill, Manor & Castle ward and the great city of Sheffield.” Cllr Terry Fox and Leader of Sheffield City Council said: “Pat played an incredibly important role at the heart of our community for many years, and it’s fitting that her relentless dedication and commitment to helping those around her is recognised in this tribute. I had the pleasure of working closely with Pat throughout our time at the council together and the even greater pleasure of calling her a good friend. Pat was a brilliant councillor; achieving so much in Park Hill and Castle Ward where she lived all her life and a fantastic person. Pat always championed her community with determination and passion, leaving a lasting contribution to Sheffield for which we are all extremely grateful. For Pat politics was all about community and people, she genuinely cared and wanted to make a difference to peoples lives. She always thought of others first and had time for everyone to listen and to do everything she could to help. I am glad that we have an opportunity to remember Pat together and celebrate her extraordinary life. Pat Midgley’s family said: “We are incredibly proud mum has been remembered in this way. She lived around Park Hill all her life, born yards away on Shrewsbury Rd and married at Talbot Street Methodist Church. She was passionate about the improvements to Park Hill and she would have been so pleased, although completely disbelieving, to know a road is named after her at the heart of the new complex and see the latest phases come to life.”

We would also like to thank our outgoing Director Theresa Keogh, for her exceptional work in leading our development and operations since November 2019, and we wish her all the very best for her future. We are now in a much stronger position thanks to her

efforts and commitment, and look forward to building on her work with Sarah over the coming years. Sarah added: “I’ve seen the vital role that The Montgomery Theatre and Arts Centre plays in the theatre ecology in Sheffield so I’m over the moon to accept this position. It will be a privilege to work where a community of performers are the beating heart of the organisation. It’s a fantastic space that is well used and loved in Sheffield that, similarly to all theatre organisations and freelancers right now, has been through a very difficult time over the past year. This role will also give me the opportunity to strengthen and expand the already brilliant work the arts centre does with community, children and young people alongside looking at how new opportunities for the building to be developed.” The iconic 420 seat Montgomery Theatre and Arts Centre, in the heart of Sheffield, opened in 1886. The organisation’s mission is to provide space and opportunities for the people of Sheffield to discover, develop, explore, experience and share their creativity. Each year over 16,000 people visit The Montgomery Theatre and Arts Centre, which specialises in children’s work and community projects.

good causes benefit from reader nominations readers may recall we recently ran an article asking members of the public to nominate local good causes for a grant of £1000. Nine charities based in South Yorkshire have received donations of £1,000 each as part of Ecclesiastical Insurance Group’s Movement for Good awards. For the third year running, Ecclesiastical Insurance Group is giving away £1million to charities through its Movement for Good awards. Members of the public were invited to nominate causes close to their hearts, with 500 awards of £1,000 available for donation. The local charities set to benefit from the money, following overwhelming public support are: Croft House Settlement Barnsley Hospice Appeal Asperger’s Children and Carers together Helping Yorkshire Poundies 270th Sheffield (Intake) Scout Group Todwick and Kiveton Rescue and Rehoming Centre Sheffield Women’s Counselling and Therapy Service The Children’s Hospital Charity Sheffield Hospitals Charity More than 4,400 kind-hearted residents voted for charities across the county. In total, more than 210,000 people around the UK supported the Movement for Good awards, with over 13,000 charitable causes up and down the country receiving votes. The 500 winning charities were picked at random from those nominated. Amazingly, a huge 87% of those who nominated a charity said they’ve donated the same amount or more during the past year, showing just how kind-hearted South Yorkshire

residents are despite challenges posed by the COVID pandemic. Additionally, 53% said they are more likely to support a local charity than a national one, as the country emerges from lockdown. It’s perhaps no surprise that health causes topped the list with the most nominations, while community and animal and wildlife charities were also front of mind as popular choices. Thanking supporters in South Yorkshire, Mark Hews, Group Chief Executive at Ecclesiastical Insurance Group, said: “We have seen an overwhelming public response to our Movement for Good awards for a third year in a row and I would like to thank every single person who took the time to nominate a good cause. It’s clear that people care deeply about those in need in their region during what has been an incredibly testing time for many. We know that £1,000 can make a huge difference to the incredible work that charities do and we’re looking forward to seeing how this financial boost will change lives for the better. Ecclesiastical, the fourth largest corporate donor in the UK, is a unique financial services group. We are owned by a charity which means all available profits can be given to the good causes that are so important to our customers. As a company whose purpose is to contribute to the greater good of society, charitable giving is at the heart of our business.” For more information about the Movement for Good awards and for a full list of the winning charities, visit: www.movementforgood.com

Soapwatch Soap fans will be able to binge episodes online during the Euros. Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders will all have episodes online as boxsets during the Euros, which will be dominating our screens until 11th July. EastEnders bosses have revealed that they will stream episodes on BBC iPlayer, with all four episodes dropping weekly on Mondays from 14th June for three consecutive weeks. Jon Sen, Executive Producer said: “Giving EastEnders viewers the ability to decide when they drop in on all things Albert Square is something we’re excited about. With the inevitable scheduling changes due to the Euros, box setting all four episodes will ensure everyone gets their dose of drama and football fans won’t miss out.” Emmerdale and Coronation Street follow suit. Both ITV soaps will also be affected by the Euros and episodes of Emmerdale and Coronation Street will be added as boxsets on ITV Hub. Just like EastEnders, episodes will drop weekly on Mondays so fans have the choice to binge watch or savour them across the week. Emmerdale and Coronation Street will also air on TV as usual between evening football matches. Coronation Street’s producer Iain MacLeod said: “There are loads of key rivalries across the cobbles this summer. I think it will be like following your favourite team – there will be times where they let you down, make mistakes and maybe score a few own goals.” Emmerdale has teased that a series of gripping storylines with focus on some of their most formidable female characters. An insider promised: “In amongst this drama there is wedding day confusion when Leyla sees Liam’s former fiancé Bernice dressed in her old wedding dress on her actual wedding day. What is Bernice thinking? Surely Liam’s not going to have a change of heart at the last minute?” It definitely sounds like the soaps will be worth binge watching online this summer!

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury rovers squad blades announce new hotel operator building continues Sheffield United’s first signing of the summer is a name we all know: Hilton. The DoubleTree by Hilton Sheffield City expects to welcome guests later this year following a franchise agreement between Hilton and the Club. In addition, leaf HOSPITALITY, one of the UK’s leading hotel management companies for branded hotels, has won the management contract. The hotel, which was built in 2008, was re-acquired by the Club in July 2020 as part of the reunification of properties under HRH Prince Abdullah’s sole ownership. United Chairman, Yusuf Giansiracusa, stated: “This is another good day for the Club and our fans. We are

confident that the DoubleTree by Hilton Sheffield City will fast become the favourite place for Blades to congregate before and after matches.” United World CEO, Abdullah Alghamdi, commented: “At the point that the assets, including the hotel, returned to the Club, Prince Abdullah committed to upgrading the Club’s portfolio and this is a sign of that pledge. It has been a difficult time with the COVID-19 pandemic but we are delighted to partner with two established names in the industry and look forward to opening the doors of the hotel at Bramall Lane once more. We hope Sheffield United fans and the wider Sheffield community will join us

in welcoming Hilton and leaf to the family and many will be able to benefit from what will be on offer, which will include the awardwinning Hilton Honors loyalty initiative.” The hotel will convert under DoubleTree by Hilton, and join leaf ’s fast-growing hotel management portfolio, which currently includes DoubleTree by Hilton and Hampton by Hilton branded properties across Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and Lancashire. For leaf ’s Managing Director, Richard Farrar, it’s a win close to his heart with family connections to the city. He observed, “This addition to our portfolio is particularly special for me, in many ways like a homecoming back to a city very close

to my heart. The hotel actually overlooks the site where my grandparents used to run a small corner shop just across from Bramall Lane. You can actually see it from the hotel. It’s great to be back in Sheffield and I’m really proud of this win for our team and looking forward to working with the Club to rebrand and reposition the hotel to its rightful league and at the heart of the local community.” Nick Smart, Vice President, Development, North & West Europe, Hilton, said, “We are pleased to be building on our market-leading presence in some of the UK’s top sporting stadiums with the development of DoubleTree by Hilton Sheffield City. With eleven stadium and

owls season ticket prices released Fans waiting for details of pricing following the Owls’ relegation to League One will be delighted to learn that, despite over a season with no revenue, the club have decided to listen to the fanbase and reduce the price at which season ticket holders can renew for the forthcoming season. The club recently released the following statement:

The Owls are pleased to announce that 2021/22 Season Tickets are available now to all 2020/21 Season Ticket holders. Given the current uncertainty on capacities for the new campaign, sales are limited in the first instance to supporters who originally purchased a 2020/21 Season Ticket. The next phase of sale will be determined by ongoing Government guidelines. With potential restrictions in mind, Season Tickets are available until Monday 28 June when sales will be suspended and numbers reviewed. Prices have been set following a consultation process with our Supporters Engagement Panel, members of which gave unanimous support to the revised structure. Adult Kop Season Tickets are now priced at £365, the equivalent of just £15.86 per game, while supporters in the South Stand will see the biggest reductions to £495, or £21.52 per game. Junior Season Tickets in the Grandstand, which for many years have offered superb value, remain at only £1 per game for under 11s, while under 17s pay just £75 for a full season of football in the same family area. All other junior Season Tickets stay at £75 for under 11s and £150 for under 17s in all other areas of the stadium. Supporters who took advantage of the Club 1867 Membership will automatically receive discounts at the basket stage based on the length of time purchased, meaning anyone on the Kop who signed up for five years for example, can see all the S6 action for just £13.48 per game. All 2020/21 Season Tickets holders have now had the relevant ticket credit applied to your account,

minus selected streamed games on iFollow. Those

who also selected options 1, 5 or 7 from the 2019/20 rebates will also see additional ticket credits. Due to the significant price reductions, current Season Ticket holders will see ticket credit remain on your account after your Season Ticket purchase, which can be redeemed against home cup games, additional home tickets or future Season Tickets. Multi Year Season Ticket holders from 2021/22 onwards will have your ticket renewed by the Ticket Office and no further action is required. Again, any remaining credit will sit on your ticket account to use on future ticket purchases as above. Please visit swfc.co.uk for a step by step guide on how to renew your Season Ticket and ensure all credits are applied at basket stage. Supporters should note that to utilise the ticket credits you must be logged in individually and make a separate transaction for each Season Ticket on which you wish to redeem credit. As ever, we have compiled a comprehensive FAQ page to help with any queries, which can also be accessed on the club website. 2021/22 Season Tickets are available in person from the Ticket Office (Monday to Saturday 10.00am until 4.00pm), at tickets.swfc.co.uk or by telephone on 03700 201867.

arena hotels across the UK, this latest addition is evidence of Hilton’s commitment to providing world-class hospitality to sports fans and visitors to this iconic venue.” The vision for the property is for it to become the leading upscale hotel in the city with a renowned, global hotel brand above the doors. When completed,

Double Tree by Hilton Sheffield City will be the third of Hilton’s properties in the area, joining the Double Tree by Hilton Sheffield Park and Hampton by Hilton Sheffield. The 155-room hotel will include a penthouse suite, fitness facilities and banqueting options for up to 400 guests.

millers pre-season preparations under way

Rotherham United’s players and staff will report back at Roundwood on Thursday 1st July for their first day of pre-season testing ahead of the 2021/22 campaign. The Millers will regroup for the first time at their training HQ next week following some well-earned time off during the close season with Paul Warne and his staff set to once again put the players through their paces and lay the foundations for their fitness over the coming weeks. The likes of Mickel Miller and Joshua Kayode – who were out on loan with clubs elsewhere last season – will rejoin their Rotherham United teammates alongside the rest of the first team group. Paul Warne’s side will travel to face Rochdale for a pre-season friendly at Crown Oil Arena, as they step up their preparations ahead of the 2021/22 campaign. The Millers will make the trip to face Brian Barry-Murphy’s side on Tuesday 20th July, with the game kicking off at 7pm. The club are still awaiting news of what the landscape may look like in terms of Covid-19 restrictions and will have more information on whether fans will be permitted to attend the fixture in due course. The Millers already have a number of other pre-season dates lined up with clubs and announcements will be following in the coming days when the relevant agreements have been complete and signed by all parties. However in other news, Rotherham United are disappointed to confirm that the charity cricket game organised by John Breckin set to take place this summer in aid of the Rotherham Hospice has been cancelled due to the recent announcement from the Government regarding the continuation of coronavirus restrictions. Following extensive deliberation between Breck and his committee, the difficult decision has been made to cancel the game planned for Friday 2nd July having taken into consideration the implications of the restrictions that will now remain in place until at least 19th July.

Richie Wellens made his third signing of the summer when Ro-Shaun Williams penned a twoyear deal at the club. The centre back is the second defender Wellens has signed this week with right back Kyle Knoyle announced on Thursday. “It’s important to start from the back and get the foundation’s right,” Wellens said. “I’ve known Ro-Shaun for a number of years – I watched him at Manchester United U23s. He’s a big physical presence and a very good defender. He’s quick, he’s good on the turn and he’s very good in the air.” Despite his relatively young age, Williams has already racked up nearly a century of professional appearances and Wellens believes he will thrive at Rovers, particularly playing alongside more experienced defenders already at the club. “He’s 22 years old and has 100 professional appearances under his belt,” he added. “On the ball, we think there’s a lot more to come from him. We know he can play out because of his Academy background. He’s been exposed to a lot of things during his short time at Shrewsbury and he’s played at the level so no away ground will surprise him. He’s got great experience alongside him too with Tom Anderson and Andy Butler.” Meanwhile Richie insisted first team opportunities will be there for young midfielders Lirak Hasani and Liam Ravenhill. The duo have signed one-year and two-year deals respectively. “I’ve listened to James Coppinger in terms of advice and know-how on them, because I haven’t seen much of them myself,” said Wellens. “They’ll be given plenty of chances and I’ve said to them both come back as fit as you can, make sure you hit the ground running and do enough to make me think ‘this kid can play’. They’ll be exposed to first-team football and if they take the chances that we give them then that is absolutely fantastic. If not, we’ll get them out on loan to further their development because there’s no point these players sitting in the stands watching the first-team play.” Hasani and Ravenhill came right through the Academy system (Ravenhill joining at U9s and Hasani at U11s after two years in the Development Squad) and Wellens believes it’s important that talented youngsters are coming to Rovers. “It’s important that the Academy attracts local players,” he added. “We don’t want to be losing any players to clubs around us and this is a sign that, if you do well, we will give you a route to the first team.” Following a request from the Viking Supporters Cooperative, head of finance Richard Poole, has provided the following summary on the club’s finances during the pandemic year. Due to owner funding, the generosity of supporters and partners, players, backroom staff and office staff taking wage cuts and deferrals, the creativity and hard work of staff, income received from player trading and rescue packages provided by different stakeholders, the club have survived what has been a very difficult 15 months financially. The generosity of supporters has been matched by an incredible amount of hard work, dedication and creativity by our staff. Players and backroom staff offered to take cuts and deferrals in the summer of 2020 and continued to do so throughout last season. Whilst actions from players are what makes the headlines, the office staff have also taken similar actions, taking pay cuts, deferrals and agreeing to work reduced hours to help reduce the over heads of the business. On the other side of that, other staff have gone above and beyond with the amount of unpaid hours they have committed to the club during the past year. Many have taken on additional duties as part of their normal role and sacrificed full weekends, holiday days and pay.
