Sheffield shortlisted for City of the Year Sheffield has been shortlisted for City of the Year in the annual EG awards following a joint entry by Sheffield City Council and the Sheffield Property Association, highlighting why the city’s unexpected liveability is unrivalled amongst its Core City peers. EG - industry experts specialising in data, intelligence and development in the commercial real estate sector - announced the shortlisted candidates last Thursday, across a range of award categories, with Sheffield in the running for City of the Year, along with Belfast, Cardiff, Glasgow,
Liverpool and Newcastle. The new award for 2021 seeks to celebrate the UK’s cities and the work they are doing to create liveable, successful places. Similarly to the city itself, Sheffield’s bid was inventive, inclusive and unexpected and caught the judges attention, focusing on its key strengths; Sheffield’s people and liveability. Considering Sheffield’s collective strengths across all sectors, pitching for City of the Year came naturally. The bid forcing judges to ask where else could you go and find pioneers in innovation, creativity, culture, digital technology, education and advanced
research and manufacturing, as well as being inclusive, multiculturally diverse, kind and welcoming, up for anything and quietly getting on with it. And the contrast doesn’t stop there; Sheffield brings the perfect balance and collaboration between urban and outdoors. Brutalist architecture and modern cityscapes are offset with more than 60% of the city’s landscape proudly set in outdoor green space, with the Peak District National Park as its backyard. Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s fantastic to be shortlisted for City of the Year
against other leading UK core cites, recognising Sheffield’s all-encompassing strengths, our people and our place, that make us stand out from the rest. “Our bid highlights just how special the city is and that’s why we invited EG to come on a walk with us, to see for themselves the collective qualities of Sheffield and the many benefits of living here. “Whatever you want to be or do, you can in Sheffield. From innovation and creativity to outdoors adventure and cutting-edge architecture we do have it all. We’re constantly developing, planning, evolving and growing in ways that
huge delivery in stock of solid wood dining tables
enhance our natural assets but create opportunity. “We embrace people, we’re kind, inclusive, welcoming and friendly, and we celebrate and encourage diversity creating rich cultures across our communities. We’re also pretty modest, quietly getting on with the job, but this is not a time for modesty, and I want to shout about all the things that undoubtedly make Sheffield City of the Year.” The award is one of 21 categories, with winners being announced at an award ceremony on Thursday 28 October 2021.

Cliffhanger back THIS WEEKEND Following the recent launch of Sheffield’s new Summer in the Outdoor City initiative, Cliffhanger, in association with Sheffield Business Improvement District (BID), is set to take place, with the return of the BMC British Bouldering Championships on Devonshire Green, on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th July. The two-day festival is being organised and run in accordance with the Step 3 reopening guidance issued by the Government. To allow the event to go ahead safely, plans have been adapted across the city centre and Sheffield will once again celebrate all things outdoors - showcasing
the nation’s elite bouldering stars as well as other covid safe activities around the Peace Gardens, Millennium Square, Fargate and Barker’s Pool. If witnessing the best of British Bouldering isn’t enough excitement, thrill seekers can catch the latest high-octane adventure films from ShAFF (Sheffield Adventure Film Festival) showing at the Showroom Cinema and with some screenings available at the Peace Gardens. Cliffhanger goers can also have a go at climbing, a Tough Guy challenge, skateboarding, zip line, jump on fairground rides, watch exciting demos and more. Those visiting for the festival
can also make the most of Sheffield’s independent shops, businesses and diverse selection of places to eat and drink – why not check out our handy guides for food and drinks and Sheffield’s Indie retail scene, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The huge 25x14ft climbing wall will be erected for the BMC British Bouldering Championships, as normal on Devonshire Green. Entry to the championships will be free of charge. Capacity has been reduced by 50% to 2,000, and the Green will be fenced off with controlled entry and exit ensuring numbers on the site are maintained at the correct level. Stewards and Covid
Marshals will be in and around Devonshire Green to manage crowds in line with outdoors events and social distancing rules, and provide advice and support to spectators. There will be no alcohol on sale as table service is required for ordering, serving and consuming, and spectators will not be
permitted to bring any on site. Food stalls will be available around the site and will be managed in a covid secure way. Once purchased, people will be asked to move away from the stall and sit whilst eating. The NHS ‘track and trace’ system will be in place, as well as Covid and health
information signs at all entry points and hand sanitizers throughout the site. All the latest updates, event info and timings for Cliffhanger will be shared on The Outdoor City Website and @ TheOutdoorCity on Twitter and Instagram.

This includes six of our local hospitals across South Yorkshire, with the staff benefitting from these generous grants aimed at improving the working environment in these difficult times. On Monday, (July 5), Freemasons across England and Wales will be playing their part in the first NHS, Social Care & Frontline Workers’ Day, to celebrate all those who have worked so tirelessly to help the country through the Coronavirus crisis, and who continue to support some of the most vulnerable people in society. Whilst Freemasons up and down the country, including those in our own area, will be marking this NHS, Social Care & Frontline Workers’ Day in a number of ways, we are delighted to be giving this donation of £60,000 which will benefit staff in 21 hospitals. Our membership is made up of men from all different walks of life, and I’m very proud to say that we have plenty who work in the medical and caring profession. I’d also like to thank our members who have also reacted brilliantly to the pandemic; from those who helped make PPE, to those helping out at vaccination centres and also going back into the medical profession to administer those all-important vaccinations. Whilst Covid has been with us for a very short period of time, Freemasonry has been thriving within the Province of Yorkshire West Riding for more than 200 years. It is at the heart of many communities, and with charity being a core theme, I’m proud to say it continues to play its part in supporting an ever increasing number of charities and good causes with financial donations.” Based on the old West Riding, the Province reaches from Sheffield in the South to Ripon in the North, and Goole in the East to Waddington in the West. What was city’s top venue of the 60s? It was an era of mods, rockers and flower power and Sheffield had venues to accommodate every taste. But what was your favourite? Was it a teenage club like the King Mojo or the Esquire; maybe you preferred the glitz of the Cavendish cabaret club or the dancefloor of the Locarno or maybe liked to settle down to watch a movie in the sumptuous Gaumont Cinema or have a coffee in the air-conditioned Sidewalk Café on Chapel Walk? Work has started on the 10th anniversary copy of the city’s celebrated ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1960s Sheffield’ and the author wants to know what you’d like in there. The book is set to be re-launched with new chapters, pictures, memories and more and Neil Anderson – who penned the original book with Dave Manvell – is keen to include contributions from people that remember the era. The sixties nightscene underwent massive cultural change in Sheffield as the post-war austerity paled into insignificance and teenage pop and fashion came to the fore. It was an era that saw the ‘Made in Sheffield’ brand take on a whole new significance as the city’s influence began to be felt around the world with the rise of cultural icons like Joe Cocker, Peter Stringfellow, Dave Berry and others. The fox-trot, tango and waltz of the fifties dancehalls went head to head with the rise of blues, jazz, pop and more.
SUPPORT ENGLAND
Neil Anderson said: “The sixties were an incredibly exciting time to grow up in Sheffield and I’m keen to hear which venues people think deserve to be featured. I want this book to truly capture the excitement of the time and represent the major cultural shifts that were happening in society.” People can vote for their favourite venue of the sixties at www.dirtystopouts.com The poll closes at 12 midnight on Friday, July 9th.

Soapwatch Soap fans will be able to binge episodes online during the Euros. Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders will all have episodes online as boxsets during the Euros, which will be dominating our screens until 11th July. EastEnders bosses have revealed that they will stream episodes on BBC iPlayer, with all four episodes dropping weekly on Mondays from 14th June for three consecutive weeks. Jon Sen, Executive Producer said: “Giving EastEnders viewers the ability to decide when they drop in on all things Albert Square is something we’re excited about. With the inevitable scheduling changes due to the Euros, box setting all four episodes will ensure everyone gets their dose of drama and football fans won’t miss out.” Emmerdale and Coronation Street follow suit. Both ITV soaps will also be affected by the Euros and episodes of Emmerdale and Coronation Street will be added as boxsets on ITV Hub. Just like EastEnders, episodes will drop weekly on Mondays so fans have the choice to binge watch or savour them across the week. Emmerdale and Coronation Street will also air on TV as usual between evening football matches. Coronation Street’s producer Iain MacLeod said: “There are loads of key rivalries across the cobbles this summer. I think it will be like following your favourite team – there will be times where they let you down, make mistakes and maybe score a few own goals.” Emmerdale has teased that a series of gripping storylines with focus on some of their most formidable female characters. An insider promised: “In amongst this drama there is wedding day confusion when Leyla sees Liam’s former fiancé Bernice dressed in her old wedding dress on her actual wedding day. What is Bernice thinking? Surely Liam’s not going to have a change of heart at the last minute?” It definitely sounds like the soaps will be worth binge watching online this summer!

Slaviša excited and focused Finishing the Speaking to the media for the first time as United manager, Slaviša Jokanović says he is excited and ready for the challenge that lies ahead. The 52-year-old, who officially began work with the Blades on Thursday, feels he has a clear and realistic ambition of what is required from him at Bramall Lane as he endeavours to bring successful times back to S2. Jokanović has only spent two days working with his players, but insists
the mood is upbeat despite last season’s relegation from the Premier League and revealed the squad have responded positively to his calls for them to make good first impressions. Pressure isn’t something that will faze Jokanović, who has previously guided Watford and Fulham to promotion from the Championship, but at the same time he refused to look too far ahead, with the new campaign still over a month away. On his philosophies and
style of play, Jokanović believes his side must take risks to enable them to be dominant and accumulate and healthy tally of points over 46 games in the second tier. Jokanović is targeting an evolution rather than a revolution having officially started work at Bramall Lane earlier this week. The Blades boss acknowledged he must look to add fresh blood to the existing group but is adamant he wants as little disruption as possible in terms of outgoings.
Jokanović says he is looking forward to working with all his players and he is particularly looking forward to welcoming goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who is currently part of the England squad, back to pre-season training later this month. The United manager is encouraged by the information that has been relayed to him since his appointment, whilst concluding that he will be prudent when venturing into the transfer market.
Welsh trip on a high - MOORE Darren Moore believes the Owls’ maiden friendly of the summer with Celtic will provide a good test for his side and represent a positive ending to a good pre-season spell in Wales. The squad have been based in Newport over the past week and the camp is due to reach its conclusion on Wednesday afternoon with a behind closed doors clash against Scottish Premier League side Celtic. Preparing for the first fixture of the summer, Moore told swfc.co.uk: “It’s a great test for the boys, I think it’s a wonderful test. “As you know they are competing for the Champions League so they’ll come in excellent condition.” Celtic face FC Midtjylland in the second qualifying round of UEFA Champions League later this month. For Wednesday, it’s the first of seven friendlies ahead of our league campaign which kicks off on Saturday 7 August away at Charlton. “It’s a great first game for us in terms of the work that we’ll have to do off the ball,” Moore said of the clash with the Bhoys. “But we’ll also have to be very good on the ball because they are a top opposition. “We are really delighted that both teams are in the same location and both teams thought it would be excellent to have an in-house game, so really looking forward to them coming down. “It will finish off a good week with a positive game.”
It’s good to be back and working hard
Swfc.co.uk caught up with Massimo Luongo as preseason preparations continue at our training camp in Wales. On the end of season break… The off-season went quite quick. I try to keep as fit as possible in the off-season, I want to forget about last season and work hard and focus on what we need to do. On starting pre-season… It’s good to get a few sessions out of the way and start afresh, build a good squad and a good morale around the training ground. It’s good to be back and working hard, the weather has been good. We have been doing double sessions, a lot of running but it was manageable and doable. The fact we’ve been able to get away to Wales is good. There are two sessions a day, so not much time to relax. On fitness… I feel good, I feel strong, I feel fit. I just need to manage it and not expect too much too early. I’ll get some training sessions under my belt and build from there. The aim is to stay fit, last year was so frustrating but now my focus is to get fit and stay strong and get my legs as strong as possible to give myself the best platform. I can’t wait for the first game. Everyone is on a level playing field and we all want to start, so we all need to prove that we are ready.
Wellens: Smith will Smith buzzing to be at Rovers suit our style of play Richie Wellens said he was delighted to get key target Matt Smith through the door. Smith was on loan at Swindon Town under Wellens, so the manager knows all about the young Arsenal player and believes he has the potential to develop at Rovers. “When I first signed him at Swindon you could tell it was his first loan but after five or six weeks he was up to speed and he was the best player we had,” he said. “He played a lot of games for me and his development was pretty rapid. I think the pitch here at Doncaster and the style of football we want to play will help him a lot and with better players around him he’ll come on even more.” Smith will slot into the midfield alongside Wellens first summer signing Ben Close, but the manager believes the 20-year-old will add something different. “He’s a good kid and with him and Ben Close in the middle – they will really complement each other,” he added. “Smith will go in there add legs and help break things up when we are expansive.”
Arsenal youngster Matt Smith says he is delighted to be working with manager Richie Wellens again after putting pen to paper on a season-long loan at Rovers. The midfielder spent the first half of last season in Sky Bet League One at Swindon Town with Wellens and says the manager’s style of play is what brought him to South Yorkshire. “I’m buzzing. I’m really looking forward to the season it’s my second season now in league one so I know what to expect,” he said. “I worked with the manager at Swindon Town and Doncaster play the right way and a way that suits me as a player, so it was a no-brainer to come here especially in the development of my career. “Hopefully, now I’ve come in here we’ll push on and do well this season. While the manager was a big pull, good feedback from Gunners team-mates and former Rovers loanees Ben Sheaf and Tyreece John-Jules also played a big part in Smith’s decision. “Richie is a top manager and I love working with him. For me personally, he wanted to help me every day to develop and push on. I really enjoyed my time working with him so the decision to come here was an easy one,” he added. “I spoke to Ben Sheaf and Tyreece John-Jules too and they both spoke highly of their time here so that pushed me to come here too. “I’m really looking forward to the season ahead.”
Players and staff get vaccinated at Roundwood Rotherham United’s first team players and staff are hoping to have set the example for people in the local area after they gathered at their Roundwood training base to receive doses of the covid-19 vaccination. With the help of the NHS and local vaccine volunteers, the club’s Performance Manager Ross Burbeary was able to organise this unique session for the Millers players as we continue to get back to a more ‘normal’ looking world and navigate our way safely out of the coronavirus pandemic. A number of Millers personnel had already received a first dose of the vaccine and were on-hand on Saturday to receive a second, whilst those yet to be vaccinated – most of the younger members of the squad - assembled at the club’s training headquarters to get the jab. Numbers of people in the younger demographic in
the Rotherham area suggest that they have been less likely to join older members of the population in getting vaccinated and it is hoped that by getting involved, the Rotherham United first team can prompt others of a similar age to do the same. The club’s training ground gym was temporarily transformed into a covid-safe vaccination area with players and staff alike joining the queue to have either the first or second of the two doses. We would like to say a huge thank you to Andrea Kitchen and her dedicated team for giving up their time on Saturday - and indeed throughout the pandemic - to help us get back to a more ‘normal’ way of living.
