They’re coming home – a Sheffield welcome for city’s Euro heroes

Sheffield’s Euro 2020 stars will be invited to a civic reception as the city pays tribute to the massive achievement our local Lions have made in the competition. England stars Kyle Walker, Harry Maguire and Dominic Calvert-Lewin – all local lads – have done Sheffield proud and the city is behind them all the way ahead of Sunday’s final against Italy. When it’s all over, the players will be invited by the Lord Mayor to a civic reception so Sheffield can truly show their appreciation.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Terry Fox, said: “What can I say – the Sheffield lads have done us proud. After the shocking year we’ve all had, this England team have given the city, and this country, a massive lift. No matter what happens in the final, these lads deserve a huge Sheffield thank you. Come on, England – it’s coming home.” The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr Gail Smith, said: “Sheffield is the home of football and we are rightly proud. I am absolutely thrilled to be

able to invite Harry, Kyle and Dominic to a civic reception once they’ve got over the excitement of the Euros! Well done, lads. Bring it home for Sheffield.” Kate Josephs, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council, said: “We couldn’t have asked for more from our local Lions – what a joy they’ve been to watch. We can’t wait to welcome them back to Sheffield. A huge good luck to the England team on Sunday, we’re all behind you!”

I stopped a bloke in the street and said, “Can you help me? I’m looking for a rubbish tip.” He replied, “Spain to win the Euros.” I need to re-home a dog. It’s a small terrier, and tends to bark a lot. If you’re interested, let me know and I’ll jump over next door’s fence and get it for you.

summer kids’ reading yas charity lottery climbing kilimanjaro challenge launched to boost cpr training for bowel cancer The Sheffield Libraries Reading Challenge will be launching on Saturday 17th July! The reading challenge is designed to encourage children to keep reading over the summer holidays helping them to maintain and develop their reading skills and nurture a love of reading for pleasure. The Sheffield Reading Challenge will be available in all Sheffield Libraries and is suitable for children from birth to 11 years of age. The theme of the challenge is wild animals and wildlife. The Sheffield based award winning, bestselling illustrator Lydia Monks has created the colourful design for the challenge. It’s free and easy to sign up to take part in the challenge, children just need to go along to their local library to register to take part. All children have to do is read four books of their choice over the summer holidays, for each book that they read they will receive a sticker to add to their collector’s card. On completion they will receive a certificate and limited-edition pin badge. Councillor Alison Teal, Executive Member for Sustainable Neighbourhoods, Wellbeing, Parks and Leisure said: “We look forward to hearing about which books you have chosen and hope that you really enjoy your summer of reading. It’s so much fun getting into a story and a great feeling when the book is so good that you don’t want to put it down. We hope that you discover your own new favourite.”

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) Charity has launched its first ever weekly lottery draw to help boost its life-saving work! Players can win up to £1,000 each week from a prize fund of £1,600 while supporting the work of the YAS Charity. For £2 per week, participants have a one-in-30 chance of winning one of 30 prizes (compared to a one-in-57 chance with the National Lottery). The proceeds will improve cardiac arrest survival rates by providing communities with defibrillators and life-saving cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training, & support ambulance staff and volunteers in crisis by providing hardship grants for those who may find themselves in difficulty. Dani Norman, YAS Charity Manager, said: “Anyone can have a cardiac arrest at any time and our work to increase access to defibrillators and CPR training is saving lives in those vital minutes before an ambulance arrives. But we still have so much more to do and by joining our lottery every week you can help us to expand our life-saving work across Yorkshire. “This is the first time our charity has had a way that our supporters can regularly give and have fun at the same time. By joining the lottery, you will be helping us to secure future funding as well as having the chance of winning some fantastic cash prizes - WIN WIN!” You have to be over 16 to take part and can do so for under £10 a month - £8.67 to be exact. Simply sign up via the YAS Charity website at https://www.yascharity.org.uk/support-us/ lottery/. Thank you, and good luck!

support local families this summer Leading charities are urging shoppers across Yorkshire to donate food at their local Tesco to help support children and families across the UK this summer. From July 15 to 17 Tesco is holding a summer Food Collection in aid of FareShare and the Trussell Trust at all of its large stores across the UK. Shoppers are being urged to donate a variety of long-life foodstuffs to help FareShare supply thousands of community groups such as children’s holiday clubs and food pantries and help the Trussell Trust’s network of food banks provide emergency parcels to families in crisis. Tesco will give an extra little help in the form of a 20% top up to the value of customer donations to assist the two charities in their vital work. Gareth Batty, Chief Executive at FareShare Yorkshire, said every donation made would make a real difference. “There are so many fantastic community groups across the country that work hard to bring children together during the holidays,” he said. “The items we receive from the Tesco Food Collection will help us to support a huge range of organisations working with children and families, from school holiday activity clubs and playgroups to breakfast and after school clubs. Your donations will make such a big difference to thousands of children at risk of going hungry this summer, so if you’re able to purchase just one item in your local Tesco store we would be so thankful.”

Food banks in the Trussell Trust’s network gave almost a million food parcels to support children last year. “No one should face the indignity of needing emergency food,” said Emma Revie, chief executive of the Trussell Trust. “Yet our UK-wide network of food banks gave out a record 2.5 million emergency food parcels in the last year – with more than 980,000 of these provided for children. This isn’t right. Food banks across the region do all they can to help families meet the extra financial pressures of the summer holidays. By donating during the Tesco Summer Food Collection this July, you will help your local food bank provide the best possible support to families in crisis today, while working towards a future where everyone has enough for the essentials.” Shoppers will be greeted in store with a shopping list giving details of the products that are most-needed by their local food bank or FareShare regional centre, and are being encouraged to pick up an item as they shop to drop in special donation trollies on the way out of the store. In addition to the collection in large stores, Tesco Express stores will be collecting donations throughout the summer (from July 12 to August 28). Customers who want to support FareShare and the Trussell Trust but are unable to shop in store are being encouraged to donate their Tesco Clubcard vouchers to them via the Tesco Clubcard website

Rebecca Clark, 37, from Sheffield, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in January 2020, and to celebrate her remission of the disease, she is leading a team of people affected by bowel cancer to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in January 2022 to raise £10,000 for Bowel Cancer UK. Rebecca will be joined on the trip of a lifetime by her friend Emma Campbell, who she bonded with online after her bowel cancer diagnosis. Rebecca says: “Shortly after I was diagnosed with bowel cancer, I came across the most amazing cancer community on Instagram. A woman called Emma Campbell liked one of my posts and sent me a private message. She’s a young mum like me and our lives are so similar, we’re the same age, our kids are similar ages and we really hit it off! We have so much in common. We ended up messaging each other every single day and I don’t know what I would without my best bowelie buddy! We’ve only met twice, but it feels like we have known each other for years. We really wanted to do something amazing to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK. I’ve always dreamt of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, so I suggested this to Emma. She is just as crazy as me, so of course said she would love to do it too! We are travelling to Tanzania in January 2022 to complete the trek and hope to raise £10,000, which will cover the cost of the trip and donations to Bowel Cancer UK.” Rebecca was diagnosed with bowel cancer a few months after going back to work, after having her second child. She says “In September 2019, a few months after returning to work after maternity leave, I started to feel extremely tired and I noticed a change in my bowel habit – I needed to go to the toilet more often and felt like I couldn’t hold it sometimes. I was also starting to feel dizzy when I got up too fast and I’d lost a bit of weight. I just put it down to the stresses of going back to work and having two young children.” After visiting her GP a few times, she was referred for a colonoscopy – a test that can diagnose bowel cancer, the UK’s second biggest cancer killer: “I went on my own to the hospital as I genuinely didn’t believe it was going to be anything serious, nor did I have any sedation. I was in the waiting room for a long time. A lot of people were coming and going. Eventually they called me in, and the consultant explained what they had found and showed me pictures of the tumour. I could tell by the look on everyone’s faces that it was bad.” Rebecca has since had surgery and chemotherapy, and is making a good

My husband has been my absolute rock, I couldn’t have got through this without him.” Luke Squires, Director of Fundraising at Bowel Cancer UK, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled Rebecca and her team are taking on a challenge of a lifetime for the charity by trekking the infamous Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s only by people like Rebecca supporting the charity we can continue to save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer.” Find out more about Rebecca’s challenge: justgiving.com/fundraising/becksandemclimbkili Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, with over 42,000 people diagnosed every year. Although it’s more common in older people, more than 2,500 people under 50 are diagnosed with the disease every year. About bowel cancer Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK and the second biggest cancer killer, affecting both men and women. Every 15 minutes in the UK someone is diagnosed with bowel cancer. That’s over 42,000 people every year. Bowel cancer is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early. Nearly everyone survives bowel cancer if diagnosed at the earliest stage. However this drops significantly as the disease develops. Early diagnosis really does save lives. The symptoms of bowel cancer can include: • Bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in your poo • A persistent and unexplained change in bowel habit • Unexplained weight loss • Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason • A pain or lump in your tummy Most people with these symptoms don’t have bowel cancer. Other health problems can cause similar symptoms. If you have one or more of these, or if things just don’t feel right, see your GP.

Live music to play again on July 19th LIVE (The Industry body - Live music Industry Venues & Entertainment) is delighted that, after over a year of closure, live music can begin once again in England – at full capacity – on 19 July. After having lost over 85% of its revenue in 2020, this is a landmark moment for the industry. Events will be able to begin again in earnest, finally bringing much sought-after joy, entertainment and excitement to fans up and down the country. This week’s announcement is a crucial step forward and we have worked day and night over the past year to ensure that live events can return safety. However, barriers still remain which will severely impede the recovery of this £4.6 billion industry. These must be urgently resolved if we are to fully reopen: Greg Parmley, CEO of LIVE said: “Today is a fantastic day for live music – our members cannot wait to get back out there and put on the events safely that our fans have been missing this past year. “While we have been waiting for this moment for the past year, commercial insurance is still not available – meaning organisers are faced with the prospect of huge financial losses should any restrictions need to change. If Government really wants us to get back our feet, they need to make live events financially viable, provide the insurance scheme they have promised, and give the industry the confidence to invest for the long term.” Mark Davyd, CEO for Music Venues Trust said: “Music Venue Trust warmly welcomes the decision to permit Grassroots Music Venues in England to open at full capacity from 19 July. For the last 12 months, we have been working tirelessly alongside venue operators to identify ways in which they can Reopen Every Venue Safely. That work remains at the forefront of everyone’s minds, but today we

want to reach out to live music fans and send them a simple message: It’s finally time to Revive Live. Please help your local venue in England to provide safe events by thinking about your personal responsibility, the things you can do to ensure that as well as keeping yourself safe you are also doing everything you can to support the safety of others. We have all been desperately seeking the opportunity to Revive Live Music, and to show that we can do that safely. Let’s take this opportunity and demonstrate that we are a community that cares about each other.”

David Keighley, Chair of the Production Services Association said: “It is great news to hear that finally the government has confirmed the easing of restrictions on the

19th of July. The success of the vaccination roll out has been the key factor in making the move to step 4 possible. Ironically, we see very large increases in COVID cases at this time but if the vaccines mean the number of serious cases and hospitalisations remain relatively low, then it is right to open up our economy. Let’s all hope this remains the case in the coming months. There is still a level of uncertainty, and we all need to be cautious throughout the summer and particularly moving into autumn.

Paul Reed, CEO of the Association of Independent Festivals said: “We welcome the Health Secretary’s confirmation of progressing to Step 4 of the lockdown roadmap. Government has repeatedly stated that once we are at this stage, it will examine if insurance is still an issue for events and intervene if necessary. We are now one week away from this date and the sector needs a long overdue resolution to this problem. AIF is also working with the relevant Government departments on the publication of guidance to ensure that festivals can reopen safely this summer, and organisers and local authorities alike can have confidence in their decision making and measures introduced – including Covid certification were considered appropriate. Ensuring the safety of audiences and risk mitigation has always been central to what festival organisers do each year and it will continue to be more so than ever as we begin to emerge from the pandemic.” Steve Heap, General Secretary of The Association of Festival Organisers said: “The Association of Festival Organisers is delighted to hear the Secretary of State tell the house that the government have no plans to start charging for lateral Flow Tests. Whilst we are of course also

very pleased the government will take us to step 4 on July 19th. However, in order to save the last few events of the 2021 season we must have the necessary guidance immediately as festivals are trying to meet the required regulations at very short notice.”

it’s back! the fringe at tramlines announced Following last week’s announcement that Tramlines festival will go ahead later this month, it has been confirmed that The Fringe at Tramlines, in Association with Sheffield BID, will also run across the city centre and in venues throughout the city. From Friday 23 to Sunday 25 July citywide venues will get in on the action alongside the main festival at Hillsborough Park, with outdoor music and entertainment also on Devonshire Green and in the Peace Gardens. The Fringe at Tramlines Stage on Devonshire Green presents two days of high-quality music from an extremely talented range of DJs performing live sets throughout the weekend. The highlight on Saturday is the critically acclaimed, Chris Hawkins: BBC Radio 6 Music presenter and a regular voice on BBC Radio Live. Chris will be creating a live podcast from the stage on the theme of ‘How to be a DJ’ as well as playing his own set and bringing in a guest DJ. On Sunday the music varies from chilled reggae to R’n’B with headline DJ and producer Winston Hazel, a Sheffield legend. Live bands will feature across The Fringe programme in numerous events planned by bars, pubs and clubs. There’ll be plenty of entertainment for families in the Peace Gardens on Saturday and Sunday, with a disco for anyone who fancies a dance and plenty of deckchairs when it’s time to chill. The helter-skelter, roaming children’s characters and fantastic food on offer will provide the perfect family hangout. Councillor Julie Grocutt, Deputy Leader at Sheffield City Council said: “We’re really pleased that The Fringe at Tramlines can once again run alongside the main festival and it will be a memorable occasion on our Summer in the Outdoor City line up. I know how popular the

weekend is and it’s a real opportunity to enjoy our vibrant city, showcase local, upcoming and unsigned talent, but even more so it’s a chance for people to let go and have a great time. Our hospitality venues have worked so hard to stay afloat during the pandemic and to stick to the guidelines that have kept us all safe and they should be applauded for their efforts. With social restrictions being lifted and so many bars, pubs and clubs eager to be involved, The Fringe will provide a huge boost to our local economy and will feel like a huge celebration for everyone. “I understand that there may be some nervousness around all covid related restrictions being lifted and that some may want a slower return to normality. If you’re going out for The Fringe try to plan your weekend as much as possible and speak to venues about their arrangements so that you can go to the places where you’ll feel most comfortable. We want everyone to be able to enjoy the best of what Sheffield has to offer in their own way and for those who prefer there are lots of opportunities to stay outside as well as what our fantastic venues are putting on indoors.” All Fringe events will be listed on The Outdoor City website. Attendees are advised to check with individual venues whether ticketing or pre-booking is required, as each venue and event will be run separately. If the Government’s plan to remove all social restrictions goes ahead, The Fringe will take place on the first weekend after those changes, meaning that venues will not be legally required to put social distancing, table service and limited capacity measures in place. The event is run in association with Sheffield BID, as part of their commitment to support the city centre and its businesses.

Diane Jarvis, Head of Business Operations at Sheffield BID said: “The announcement that The Fringe at Tramlines event is returning to the city centre is more excellent news for the city and for our businesses. The Fringe will once again showcase local creative talent and provide a unique platform to reach a large and captive audience. The Fringe at Tramlines attracts thousands of people and we’re once again looking forward to seeing a vibrant, carnival atmosphere in the city centre. We’re proud to play our part in helping to bring yet another fantastic event to the city centre this summer and to fully back the Council’s Summer in The Outdoor City campaign. We would encourage everyone to plan ahead, to make the most of what is sure to be a fantastic weekend and, above all else, to support your city centre businesses.”

Venues who are hosting or planning a music event in Sheffield around Tramlines weekend can feature and be promoted as part of the official ‘The Fringe at Tramlines’ programme. Simply submit the details for your event to Sheffield’s licensing service at licensingservice@sheffield. gov.uk The Fringe at Tramlines 2021 is part of Summer in The Outdoor City, our campaign highlighting all the exciting things you can do in Sheffield this summer, through to September. Anyone with Covid symptoms should not attend and should stay at home and self-isolate. Everyone over the age of 18 is now eligible for the vaccination and getting the jab is the best way to protect yourselves and others. Vaccines can be booked now on the NHS website.

BLADES PRE-SEASON OFF TO A WINNING START Sheffield United’s preparations for the 2021/22 campaign got off to the perfect start in southern Spain on Saturday evening. The Blades enjoyed an excellent workout against resilient opponents, as goals from John Egan and Lys Mousset in the opening 45 minutes coupled with Tyler Smith’s second-half strike saw them run out comfortable victors. Jokanović named a 24-man squad for the opening clash of pre-season against the Gibraltar National League side, with Egan captaining a strong starting XI that included the likes of Basham, Norwood, Osborn, Brewster, Mousset and McGoldrick. United made a positive start and having

dominated the ball in the opening minutes, Brewster turned and ran at the Europa Point defence and saw a shot deflected wide for a corner, which unfortunately came to nothing from Norwood’s outswinger. The opposition, who were formed in 2014, enjoyed a couple of forays forward, but it was their goalkeeper Tudela who kept the scores level as he denied Norrington-Davies after Mousset had created an opportunity down the left flank from Egan’s ball. Following a drinks break and a cold towel to combat the searing Spanish heat, United threatened twice in quick succession. Firstly, McGoldrick combined nicely with Osborn, but

Olamide Shodipo joins Owls on loan The Owls are pleased to announce the signing of Olamide Shodipo on a season-long loan from Queens Park Rangers. A product of the R’s academy, Shodipo spent last season on loan with Oxford where his 13 goals helped the U’s reach the League One play-offs. The tricky winger has had previous loan experience with Colchester and Port Vale. Shodipo has also been recognised on the international stage after representing Ireland at Under-21 level. The 24-year-old, who is equally adept on either flank, now bolsters Darren Moore’s options ahead of the new campaign. Speaking exclusively to swfc.co.uk, Shodipo said: “I’m really happy to join. “I’ve heard so many good things about the club, I know Massimo Luongo and he’s said some really good things. “It’s a big club, the fans are immense and I’m looking forward to working with Darren Moore. “I want to come and help the team as much as possible and aim for promotion.”

Mousset couldn’t add the finishing touch, then from Norwood’s corner, Basham headed against the crossbar before the assistant referee raised his flag for offside. On 34 minutes, United deservedly took the lead. Mousset made another run down the left and won a corner, from which Norwood whipped in and EGAN rose head and shoulders above everyone else and planted a powerful header past Tudela. The Blades now had an extra zip in possession and McGoldrick was becoming more instrumental, this time freeing NorringtonDavies on the left, but from his cross Brewster couldn’t direct his header on target. Three minutes before the break, Jokanović

saw his side double the advantage. MOUSSET powered clean through and showed great composure before calmly slotting past a retreating Tudela and that was the last action of note. Jokanović made 11 changes at the interval, opting to keep the same formation and on 50 minutes, United should have made it three, Brunt freed Freeman down the left, he fired across goal but Smith seemed to overrun the ball and diverted an effort wide when it looked easier to score, but he almost redeemed himself seconds later, firing at goal from inside the area, only to see it cleared off the line. On the hour, unsurprisingly, United added a third. It was a

case of third time lucky for SMITH who slotted nicely into the bottom corner, but credit to Lowe who was heavily involved in the buildup, advancing forward before picking out the run and threading through a nicely weighted pass. Broadbent replaced Brunt following the second drinks break of the contest and moments later, from Baldock’s deep cross Lowe was denied, before Seriki couldn’t capitilise on an opportunity from a cross from the opposite flank before firing off target at the near post moments later. As Europa Point started to tire, the youthful Blades continued to hunt more goals, but Slater was denied by another last-ditch hack off the

line, before Jebbison almost scored with a tackle, as a defender took too long on the ball in his own penalty area. Jokanović will have been encouraged as his witnessed his youngsters keep pushing until the final whistle in a bid to increase the winning margin.

Blades (first half ): Foderingham, Bogle, Norrington-Davies, Basham, Egan, Robinson, Norwood, Osborn, Brewster, Mousset, McGoldrick. Blades (second half ): Eastwood, Seriki, Lowe, Baldock, Lopata, Gordon, Freeman, Slater, Brunt (Broadbent 68), Jebbison, Smith.

Dennis Adeniran Wellens provides joins the Owls Anderson update Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of former Everton midfielder Dennis Adeniran. The 22-year-old joins Darren Moore’s squad ahead of the 2021/22 campaign. Adeniran climbed the youth ranks at Fulham and made his senior debut for the Cottagers in August 2016 in a 3-2 win over Leyton Orient, with the midfield man on target in the first half. He made his league debut in a Championship clash with Nottingham Forest the following month. After making five appearances for the Craven Cottage club during his breakthrough campaign, the youngster was swiftly snapped up by Premier League side Everton in August 2017. Arriving on Merseyside at just 18-years-old, Adeniran went on to feature regularly for the Toffees’ Under-21s. In search of regular first team football, Adeniran made a season-long loan switch from Goodison Park to Wycombe Wanderers in September 2020. The energetic midfielder made 22 appearances for Gareth Ainsworth’s side in the Championship and FA Cup. An international at youth level with England Under17s, 18s and 19s, Adeniran linked up with the Owls earlier this week, taking in the latter part of our pre-season camp in Wales and now joins us ahead of the new campaign and our trip to Chester this afternoon.

United reveal 21/22 Home Kit The Blades are delighted to launch the official 21/22 adidas home shirt. The famous red & white stripes will be donned by United in our last pre-season friendly before the start of the EFL Championship season against Norwich City on July 31 and will feature again when Slavisa Jokanović takes charge of his first competitive fixture against Birmingham City on August 7. Our new principal sponsor Randox Health takes pride of place on the front of the new strip. Shirts are now available for pre-order with an in-store launch pencilled in for the end of July. When purchasing online, supporters are advised that the club is now using a Single Sign On system across our digital platforms. If you have yet to link your existing accounts since the introduction of single sign on, supporters should create a new account on the ticketing or retail site, complete your details and select the option to link accounts. Richie Wellens provided an update on Tom Anderson after the skipper was forced out of Saturday’s friendly at Rossington Main during the warm up. “Tom Anderson got a knock in training, just an impact injury, so we’re going to get that scanned because they is a little bit of swelling there,” Wellens said. “The main thing is to get him back. If he misses three or four days of training then that’s ok, but if we risk him and he misses two or three weeks training that’s not ok. He’s going to play a pivotal part in this squad. “I’ve said all along, he’s the best centre back in the league for me and he’s going to be instrumental in nurturing a lot of young players that we’ve got.”

Warne conscious of need to inject ‘fun’ into gruelling pre-season Rotherham United boss Paul Warne insists the upcoming overseas training camp will be more than just players putting in the hard yards, as he looks to add some ‘fun’ to the trip in an attempt to further motivate his team ahead of the 2021/22 Sky Bet League One campaign. Warne, whose trips abroad have garnered a reputation for their character building toughness, admits that he will look to use the camp as an opportunity to strengthen what is already a close-knit group whilst out in Hungary as we all look to try and get smiles back on our faces after the challenges presented to us by the pandemic. “In fairness, this is probably the first trip that I’m aware that they need to have a bit of fun as well,” he told www.themillers.co.uk. “I feel that when we came back everyone felt a little bit flat after how our season ended. I’ve got the same

group of players who know what we expect out of them as people and as footballers. In spite of the Millers boss making a conscious effort to lighten the mood during the trip, it will be anything but a holiday with Performance Manager Ross Burbeary having already earmarked a gruelling morning hill run out in Budapest. Days will once again include that morning test and will be followed – on most occasions – by both a morning and afternoon training session with the footballs. The Millers also have a friendly booked in with Hungarian opposition on Wednesday which will provide the players with another opportunity to get a run out following Saturday’s annual meeting with Parkgate. “It will step up. In fairness, the lads are in really good fettle which is good,” Warne added. “We’ll all get up and do our morning runs. Ross has found a 2.5km hill run which the lads are going to really enjoy. “We’ll do that, we’ll train in the morning and again later in the afternoon. We’ll get a game out there and there are two other teams training where we are so we might be able to get another sneaky one in instead of training.”
