‘Take it steady’ SAYS Sheffield health chief As most restrictions on social contact were lifted this week, Sheffield City Council’s Director of Public Health is urging people to take it steady and continue to look out for each other. Greg Fell has said a big thank you to Sheffielders for their amazing efforts throughout the pandemic so far, as the Government moves the nation into Stage 4 of its roadmap out of lockdown. The Government has said that cases are “high and rising” nationally and that “everybody needs to continue to act carefully and remain cautious.” In Sheffield, cases are 516 per 100,000 and rising quickly,
with an increase in hospital admissions, so we just need to remain vigilant. Sheffield City Council’s Greg said: “Moving into the next stage of the roadmap is really positive news for many people, and for local businesses. If you can, I’d encourage you to get out and support them this summer. It’s important to remember though that restrictions may have been lifted, but the pandemic isn’t over, and we all need to look after each other. There will also be people who are nervous about these restrictions lifting, so please do give people the space and consideration they need.
Thank you for your amazing efforts so far – your response has been fantastic. Please, take it steady, and keep taking steps to stay safe.” Under the new rules: • Wearing a face covering becomes voluntary in most places, but the advice remains to wear one in crowded places such as on public transport • People can meet inside or outside with as many people as they are happy to see • QR codes and table service in hospitality venues are no longer mandatory • Nightclubs can open and big events such as festivals and sporting events can go
ahead, although vaccine passes may be encouraged or required at some places • Limits on care home visits will be lifted • The instruction to work from home is lifted, but this is a decision for employers, and any return is expected to be gradual • Restrictions are lifted on the number of wedding guests and mourners at funerals • People who have been fully vaccinated and those under-18 will be permitted to travel to amber countries without the requirement to quarantine upon return to the UK. The Mayor of South Yorkshire, Dan Jarvis MP,
huge delivery in stock of solid wood dining tables
has also said that people will be required to wear face coverings at the bus stations and interchanges operated by Sheffield City Region. And many businesses will still be putting additional safety measures in place. New government guidance to support businesses through Step 4 is at https://www. gov.uk/guidance/workingsafely-during-covid-19. It concentrates on six priority areas where businesses can continue to protect staff and customers and whilst some of the recommendations are not mandatory they must have a current risk assessment which should include Covid risks.

Arena prepares to re-open doors to events Since Sheffield Arena hosted its last show, Cirque Du Soleil’s Crystal back in March 2020, the venue, like the rest of the Entertainment industry has had to close its doors to indoor entertainment and adapt its business model by hosting a new range of events to those that have regularly performed at the venue over the past 30 years in showbusiness. From Drive-in Cinemas, Car Park Boxing, Comedy in the Car Park and the Young Driver Scheme through to the work in supporting the NHS and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals the Arena has been very much part of the community with over 500,000 customers using the Arena across the last year whilst the venue has been “shutdown”. In March 2020 and in
support of the local Covid-19 response the venue began working with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals as a Storage and Distribution Centre for PPE and hospital equipment and then a Drivethrough Blood Testing Site, that, over a 9 month period saw some 50,000 vehicles using the venues Drivethrough Phlebotomy Service. Then on January 25 2021 the Arena was opened to the public as Vaccination Centre in what was described as the most important event the venue has and will ever host! Since the doors to the Vaccination Centre opened it has been a 24/7 operation involving over 500 volunteers, clinical staff, administrators, stewards and Sheffield City Trust staff. When the Sheffield Arena Vaccination Centre closes
on the 23 July 2021 over 400,000 patients will have received their vaccination at the venue, with the 173 consecutive event days creating a Sheffield Arena record unlikely to ever be beaten - the longest previous engagement at the Sheffield Arena was set by Les Misérables when the West-End show performed at the venue for 35 consecutive days in 1999. Kirsten Major, Chief Executive, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The Arena team and Sheffield City Trust have been incredible in their support for us managing the response to COVID-19. From storing stocks of PPE and other vital equipment to facilitating the establishment of the drive through blood testing service and finally
becoming the home of one of our large NHS Vaccination Centres they have responded to our requests without hesitation and gone above and beyond what we asked. We would like to say a thank you to everyone involved and wish them well as they return to hosting fantastic events for us all to enjoy as lockdown restrictions ease. They have been a fundamental part of the NHS response to COVID in the city.” From July 26 the new Sheffield NHS Vaccination Centre will be based at Longley Lane, Sheffield, adjacent to the Northern General Hospital. Dom Stokes, Sheffield City Trust’s Head of Live Events and Venues who is responsible for managing Sheffield Arena as well as Sheffield City Hall, said:
“We are extremely proud of the role Sheffield Arena has played in being front and centre of the city’s response to Covid-19 and the vaccination programme. As an organisation, our core values are promoting and enhancing the health and wellbeing of communities, so it has been fantastic to be able to utilise our heritage and event logistics skills to support our community and the health services over this period . “Our priority now however is the future and to prepare to relaunch our amazing venues and reopen when we are allowed. In truth that work has never stopped and we are now looking forward to being able to welcome people back to the Arena to enjoy the many events we have scheduled in the coming
weeks and months.” As soon as the Vaccination Centre moves out of the Arena venue staff will be working flat out preparing the venue for the new ice hockey season that opens on Sunday 19 September when the Steelers play Nottingham Panthers followed by local band Bring Me The Horizon & Gerry Cinnamon who are both playing sold-out gigs at the venue before the end of the month.
The Arena along with it’s sister venue Sheffield City Hall are also beginning a recruitment drive across a wide range of roles and encouraging anyone interested in working at the venues to visit www. sheffieldcitytrust.org/jobs with a wide range of roles being added daily.

A friend of mine tried to annoy me with bird puns, but I soon realised that toucan play at that game. If you lose one sense, your other senses are enhanced. That’s why people with no sense of humour have an increased sense of selfimportance. I got sacked from my job as a theatre designer. I left without making a scene. The wife said, “You haven’t listened to a word I’ve said, have you?” What strange way to start a conversation with me. I’ve just arrived in Australia to surprise my fiancée. She’s in Sheffield and the wedding’s tomorrow. My dad found out I had an imaginary girlfriend. He said, “You know, you could do better.” “Thanks dad, that means a lot,” I replied. “I was talking to your girlfriend!” My sister asked me if I wanted to wind her new born baby? I thought that was a bit harsh so I just gave him a dead leg instead. If a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it... Then my illegal logging business is a success! My Wife asked me before going to the hairdressers, “What cut do you think would make me more attractive?” “A power cut” was apparently the wrong answer.

News, Information and Advice new plans for active neighbourhoods
Proposals to pilot two Active Neighbourhoods in Sheffield have been launched today as residents are asked to help design plans for cleaner, safer, and quieter places to live. Following a successful bid to the Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund, Crookes and Nether Edge have been identified as areas that could benefit from changes introduced in an Active Neighbourhood. Active Neighbourhoods are an increasingly popular concept which aim to increase road safety and encourage more active lifestyles by reducing and slowing down traffic in an area, so that people feel able to walk and cycle safely and generally enjoy spending more time outdoors. The consultation will ask people what changes they think would help move traffic away from specific streets in their area and create a better environment for active travel. Cllr Douglas Johnson, Executive Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport, said: “It is becoming increasingly important that people feel they have the option to walk and cycle, especially when it comes down to making short journeys in their local area - whether it be to school, the local shops or work. We need to start seeing change in travel habits for the environment and people’s own health. Active Neighbourhoods are a positive move forward in the right direction and will help people to start to make small changes where they can.” Information on how you can help shape the future of the Nether Edge and Crookes can be found on the Connecting Sheffield website where you can get involved and `share your views. Cllr Johnson added: “The idea is that the involvement from local people on the Active Neighbourhoods is more than just sharing
views for consideration; we want residents to help design what their local communities can look like. We know people living and working in Nether Edge and Crookes know the area best and can help shape the plans so that the right changes are put in place.” The Active Travel Fund is the latest round of funding from Government to help improve walking and cycling routes in areas where changes can be made quickly and are likely to see a positive impact and uptake. All changes under the Active Travel Fund need to be in place by March 2022. The £3.2m investment for Sheffield will be used to deliver two active neighbourhoods and to fund improvements to the Sheaf Valley Cycle Route. Through previous engagement on the SCR Active Travel Map and the Connecting Sheffield Heatmap, an improved cycle route along the Sheaf Valley has been identified. The Sheaf Valley Cycle Route will therefore extend from the city centre to the bottom of Woodseats Road via Shoreham Street and Little London Road. These enhanced cycle routes are designed to help make cycling a more desirable and accessible travel option. Dame Sarah Storey, Active Travel Commissioner for the Sheffield City Region, said: “The benefits of Active Neighbourhoods are already well known in Kelham Island, so it’s great to see Sheffield are moving swiftly to bringing these benefits to other areas. The proposals for Nether Edge and Crookes are looking really strong and these can now be shaped by the residents and communities themselves. This is a fantastic opportunity for people in these areas to share their thoughts and views, which I know will be welcome after we received a high number of comments from these areas on our interactive map. I really hope the community embrace this step of the process and look forward to seeing more neighbourhoods created that are safe for all.”

FOCUS ON HILLSBOROUGH Middlewood Carpets
There is a La Plata Club in Argentina and another in Spain, but the homeliest and friendliest is surely to be found right here in S6 and it’s even friendlier now with new steward Steve behind the bar. Readers are welcome to call in for a coffee after shopping in Hillsborough Centre, only one minute’s walk from the club, based on Walkley Lane for many years. With easy parking and with Supertram and bus stops close by, La Plata’s excellent location is equalled only by its comfortable, clean and bright surroundings. You can sit inside or in the welcoming Beer Garden right outside the front door. Brian Helliwell of La Plata says “We want shoppers and their families to visit and see what the club offers; it really is a cosy and family-friendly home from home.” After entering through the Beer Garden you arrive in the Family Room which is well furnished and comfortable. Live acts appear on stage every Saturday and bingo is played several times during the week. On Mondays there’s bingo with free snacks provided, on Wednesdays it’s “All-Pay-Out” night and on Fridays and Sundays there is a £500 jackpot and Open the Box. Then there’s the separate Pool Room, recently refurbished it provides players with the privacy to enjoy a quiet game or watch sport on TV. Low priced drinks include Stones, John Smiths and Heineken, plus S6ers own Bradfield Brewery beer is available. With almost 500 members La Plata is already wellknown inS6, so why not visit soon and see if you might like to join them?

The Strines Inn It’s only a short drive from the heart of Hillsborough, but the Strines Inn could be in a different world! Established almost 750 years ago, this beautiful olde worlde country pub has been a favourite for generations of local residents. Boasting open fires and a superb menu of freshly prepared, homecooked food, it is both a wonderful place for a drive out, and a famous resting place for walkers enjoying the breath-taking countryside surrounding the Inn. The Strines boasts an impressive array of traditional real ales, and it is both dog and child-friendly – a special highlight each year for the kids is the chance to see the flocks of local peacocks!
Worrall, and the villages of High Bradfield and Low Bradfield. The parish also includes several reservoirs, and a number of minor settlements. Bradfield is located 8 miles (13 km) from Sheffield city centre and 14 miles (23 km) from Barnsley. On 6 July 2014, Stage 2 of the 2014 Tour de France from York to Sheffield, passed through the village. It was also the location of the seventh climb of the stage, the Category 4 Côte de Bradfield. It was 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) long at an average gradient of 7.4%. Bradfield is one of the largest parishes in England, and covers extensive moor and agricultural land around the Damflask Reservoir, Dale Dike Reservoir, Strines Reservoir, and Agden Reservoirs, including the Bradfield, Midhope, and Broomhead moors and eastern parts of the Howden moors. The western end of the parish reaches to the upper parts of the Upper Derwent Valley with part of its boundary forming Yorkshire’s border with Derbyshire. The northern
part of the parish includes the Langsett reservoir and Midhope reservoir, and borders the town and civil parish of Stocksbridge. The eastern edge reaches the western extent of the urban spread of Sheffield, and includes the suburb of Stannington, as well as the villages of Oughtibridge, Wharncliffe Side, and Worrall. Minor habitations within the parish include Midhopestones, Upper Midhope on the northern edge, and Dungworth in the southeastern part. The moorland villages of High Bradfield and Low Bradfield are located within the parish. High Bradfield possesses a Gothic revival church, and the earthworks of a motte and bailey castle. Low Bradfield is less historic, having been largely destroyed in the Great Sheffield flood of 1864. The parish extends across the City of Sheffield electoral wards of Stocksbridge and Upper Don and Stannington Ward, and covers more than a third of the land area of Sheffield City Council.

Soapwatch Coronation Street: Coronation Street spoilers for next week tease major concern as well as drama, with health truths revealed and big decisions made. Billy is forced to make a life-changing choice thanks to the meddling of partner Todd, that leaves him stunned. Curtis confides in Steve about his true reasons for calling off his romance with Emma. It’s then that Emma discovers what he is hiding, and learns of his worrying health diagnosis. Shooting for the naked charity calendar continues, and Nick fears son Sam has been kidnapped again. Emmerdale: It’s a dark place on Emmerdale as the village is still reeling over Leanna’s tragic death. No one knows that there is a murderer walking among them. Killer Meena intends to put on a sweet facade as the angelic nurse trying to help. But as she closes in on Liam, is he in danger of becoming her next victim? Victoria is dealt a huge blow after speaking with Robert - after months of him refusing to see or speak to any of his loved ones. He tells her that he has decided not to appeal his sentencing or the conviction, believing he should face his time in prison for his crime. Luke’s confession has no means of changing his mind, with him clearly believing it to be justice for what happened to Lee. Faith from her loved ones, with her relationship with her children still on the rocks. Eastenders: Ben is still reeling over the release of killer Simon, who murdered his boyfriend Paul in 2016. There’s a family in mourning too, as the Panesars prepare to say a final goodbye to their beloved son and brother Jags, who was killed in prison recently. Keegan is shocked when he spots his wife Tiffany purchasing a pregnancy test. Lola is left devastated when boyfriend Isaac rejects her after he is sectioned.

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury OWLS LOSE OUT IN LOCAL WARM-UP FRIENDLY The Owls made the short hop to Barnsley for our fourth pre-season friendly and went down 2-0 at the Oakwell training ground. A blazing hot afternoon across South Yorkshire certainly ticked the fitness boxes as the whole squad stored valuable minutes ahead of the 2021/22 campaign. Goals either side of half time from Jordan Williams and Clarke Odour saw the Tykes take the plaudits but there were plenty of positives for Darren Moore in the bigger picture. Sweltering conditions did not detract from a free-flowing game as right from the start the Reds were on
the offensive and a perfectly-timed Chey Dunkley challenge thwarted Corey Woodrow. Wednesday hit back with the lively Olamide Shodipo accelerating down the wing only to see his drilled cross deflected out for a corner. Shodipo was at the heart of the action moment later, this time drawing a fine save from Jack Walton after good work from Dennis Adeniran. The Owls were in charge and Julian Börner called on the busy Walton after latching on to a Shodipo through ball before Josh Windass smashed into the side-netting. Barnsley soaked up the pressure and pressed on themselves, Cameron
Dawson sprang high to expertly field a Devante Cole hit. But the Reds made the breakthrough on 21 minutes. Williams picked up possession from range and his whipped strike from the left angle nestled into the net off the inside of the post. The hosts found their rhythm following the goal and only a smart Dawson save to keep Woodrow out prevented the Reds doubling their lead going into half time. The Owls were on the front foot immediately after the restart and debutant Jaden Brown sent Callum Paterson clear but the striker’s attempted lob was off radar. Shodipo, causing concern for the Barnsley
backline, forced Walton into action once more as Wednesday chased an equaliser. And it almost came on the hour when Walton
Iorfa: ‘It’s all Ten BLADES players sign positive’ The sun was shining in every sense for Dominic Iorfa as the Owls defender made a welcome return to action on a sweltering afternoon at Barnsley. Iorfa has endured a frustrating spell in the injury bay since December and was relieved to lace his boots for a cameo appearance at the Oakwell training ground on Saturday. He said: “It’s been a long time coming but great to be back out there with a little runout at the end so hopefully I can build on that from here. “My body feels fine, it’s been quite a while since I had the surgery so now, it’s a case of building up my fitness, building up that base. I’ve been involved in training but now it’s the match fitness, that’s completely different. “I’ve been pushing, I’ve been in the gaffer’s ear and he gave me a runout and I’ve come through with no issues, no complaints, so it’s all positive. “It’s now about building on what I have and turning those 15 minutes into 30s and the 30s into 60s and then full games.” Owls boss Darren Moore was equally pleased to see Iorfa back on the pitch and added: “To see Dominic Iorfa back today is wonderful. We wanted to give him 20 minutes and that’s him up and running now. He’s back in full contact training, he’s been itching to get out there.”
scholarships Ten youngsters have signed scholarships with the club ahead of the start of the 2021/22 development season. Del Geary’s side enjoyed a successful campaign last time out, finishing third in the league and reaching the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup. Several players who played a part for the team last season have now signed scholarships with United, including striker Will Lankshear who became a regular starter after joining from Arsenal in January. Owen Hampson who joined from Manchester United in January has also signed a scholarship, as have United’s own under 16s Johnny Oluleye, Levis Pitan, Luke Faxon, Sai Sachdev, Charlie Staniland and George Dickinson, the latter three of whom all made their under 18s debuts last season. Ben Drake, who joined the club on trial last season, has also signed a scholarship, as has midfielder Sydie Peck who joined the club this summer from Arsenal. Head of Academy, Jack Lester, said: “We’ve had some talented players coming through on their journey with the club from within and Steve Holmes has done a great job of recruiting some players externally from elsewhere. Those players have fitted in really well and we’re really excited about the group this season.”
made a super save to deny Paterson after a flowing move down the right channel. It was then all change for the Owls as nine
substitutions were made and on 69 minutes the Reds did double their advantage. Wednesday struggled to clear their lines in the
Wellens delighted with Cukur addition Richie Wellens believes Tiago Cukur will bring physicality, skill and goals as the forward completed the signing of a season-long loan from Watford on Monday. The 18-year-old has impressed in the Hornet’s U23s side since joining them in January and the Rovers manager says the youngster will have no problem adapting to Sky Bet League One. “He’s got good feet but can score from crosses. He’s a talented boy and we can’t wait to start working with him,” said Wellens. “Usually with an 18-year-old from the U23s the worry is that he find it tough physically, but I don’t see that being a problem with him. He’s
Millers release 2021/22 ALTERNATE strip The Millers are delighted to unveil the design of our 2021/22 Alternate strip, which will be worn on the road by the Millers when both the Primary and Change kits pose a colour clash with our opposition. This sleek black design includes a nod to a significant anniversary in the relationship - which has now reached the 10-year milestone - between the Millers and Puma Teamwear, featuring a pinstripe to commemorate the colours of each and every away kit worn by the club since our professional partnership began back in 2011. The kit will be complimented throughout by a subtle red trim with the Intelipod branding featuring proudly across the front of the shirt as the main sponsor. As always, their windmill crest will adorn the upper left area of the jersey while the Puma Cat will sit opposite on the right.

though, as Dominic Iorfa returned to the pitch, his first outing since, ironically, Barnsley last December.
big and aggressive in his play. “Even though he’s young, he’ll bring physicality. We’ve looked at him and everyone we’ve spoken to speaks very highly of him. “We think we’ve got a rough diamond and we’ll be able to bring the best out of him.” Cukur had plenty of suitors, but Wellens was determined to bring the Turkish youth international to the Keepmoat Stadium and even went to see him to ensure the deal was done. “I went down to Watford to get that personal touch because we couldn’t compete financially with what some of the other clubs were offering,” added Wellens. “We’ve got him through the door, and I’m really excited about him. “I think he can play as a 10, as an out-and-out forward, or off the left so he gives us options.” Their colleagues from Hughie Construction will see their logo appear on the reverse of the strip while the letters ‘RUFC’ will run across the front of the socks. The Red and White Shop are expecting to take stock of the Millers’ latest new strip towards the back end of the month of July, with details on when it will be available to purchase to follow in due course.
