WATERFRONT FESTIVAL RETURNS TO SHEFFIELD Following last year’s cancellation due to Covid restrictions, waterways and wellbeing charity Canal & River Trust is delighted to announce the day of family fun on the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal will return on Saturday, September 18. This year the festival will be split over two sites - Victoria Quays and Attercliffe. The free event runs from 10am to 4pm at Victoria Quays, and 11am to 3pm in Attercliffe. It will see live music and street performances, boat

trips, canoe and paddle boarding taster sessions, stalls and street food. There will also be guided walks, including taking in the canal’s Street Art Trail, a project made possible thanks to support of players of the People’s Postcode Lottery. Jade Wilkes, engagement officer and one of the coordinators of the Sheffield Waterfront Festival, said: “We can’t wait to bring the Waterfront Festival back as we really missed it last year. We know a lot of people have been making the most

of the canal during the pandemic as a place to get escape from their homes and exercise, and we know just being by water can make people feel happier and healthier. “The festival gives us the chance to show off our canal even more, as well giving people the chance to learn more about the charity’s work and how our volunteers care for the canal and make it a great place for both people and wildlife.” Anyone interested in having a stall, hosting an activity or assisting

with the festival this year should contact Jade at jade.wilkes@ canalrivertrust.org.uk. To get to Victoria Quays, the nearest tram stop is Ponds Forge, and there is also parking at Victoria

Quays, North Quay Drive, Sheffield, S4 7SW. Full details of the programme will be revealed shorty, and a full programme will be available on the Trust’s website www. canalrivertrust.org.uk

We are looking for keen cooks with bags of energy

I called work this morning and whispered, “Sorry boss, I can’t come in today. I have a wee cough.” He exclaimed, “You have a wee cough?” I said, “Really? Thanks boss, see you next week!”

“Doctor, Doctor, I think I need glasses” “You certainly do, Sir, this is a fish and chip shop” I got fired from my job at the bank today. A woman asked me to check her balance... So I pushed her over. Doctor: Your DNA is backwards. Me: And? When it’s sunny I think ‘Beer garden.’ When it rains I usually go to the pub for a while. When it’s snowing I like to sit in front of the TV with a case of Beer. I’m starting to think I have a problem with the weather.

your dog: massive increase in unsolved thefts mayor announces 25% off guard New statistics show that no dog theft crimes tackled and for the emotional value of dogs to Yorkshire and the Humber led to a criminal be recognised in sentencing. south yorkshire travel incharge “Dog theft has devastating consequences for in 2020 and in three in five cases, a The Mayor of South Yorkshire, Dan Jarvis, has announced plans to cut up to 25% off the price of bus and tram tickets this summer. The discount will apply from August 2 to all adult TravelMaster tickets, including the new Flexi-5 pass. It will run for eight weeks until September 27. Cllr Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Since May this year I’ve been demanding better support for our public transport and for our citizens who use it and so I’m really happy that finally we can offer a substantial discount to public transport across Sheffield. The pandemic has been hard for all of us and has had a huge impact on our economy - helping transport companies off of the back of the pandemic and importantly, welcoming public transport users back on our busses and trams is the boost that we need, and I have been committed to making this happen. Public transport is a huge factor in helping people get around the city and into the city centre and it’s fantastic that we can offer a 25% discount for TravelMaster for 8 weeks over the summer, alongside the “Flexi-5” ticket for the same price as 3 days. Alongside economic impact, people have been hit financially and I really hope this goes a long way to helping people get back out and into Sheffield, whether it be to socialise, commute to work or simply enjoy exploring and meeting up with friends and family again.” A discount of up to 25% will be applied to all adult TravelMaster tickets from 2 August – 27 September. TravelMaster tickets are available to purchase onboard South Yorkshire buses and trams, online at sytravelmaster.com, from ticket vending machines at Travel South Yorkshire Interchanges, and at Payzone outlets located throughout South Yorkshire.

Budding Hypnotherapists Given Chance to Make a Difference with New Training Course on 7TH AUGUST

suspect was never identified Freedom of Information statistics reveal 196 The Kennel Club’s ‘Paw and Order: Dog Theft Reform’ campaign urges the Government’s new Pet Theft Taskforce to improve the reporting and recording of the crime and to treat dog theft with more proportionate sentences As concerns about dog theft soar following the surge in pandemic puppy buying, new research shows a shocking failure to tackle a crime that is devastating 196 families every month in the UK, with only two per cent of cases resulting in a criminal charge. The statistics, gathered by The Kennel Club through Freedom of Information requests to the 45 police forces in the UK, to which 36 responded, show that there were an estimated 2,355* cases of dog theft in 2020, which is an 7 per cent increase on 2019 (2,199). This amounts to more than 196 dogs being stolen, to the heartbreak of their owners, every single month. However, based on the 27 police forces that responded on dog theft outcomes in 2020, only two per cent of all dog theft cases in the UK led to a suspect being charged. In Yorkshire and the Humber there were 271 dog thefts in 2020, but no criminal charges. No suspect was identified in three in five (60 per cent) of these reported dog theft cases in Yorkshire and the Humber, and in 34 per cent a suspect was identified but no action was taken, due to ‘evidential difficulties’. The statistics are revealed 79 days after the Government’s Pet Theft Taskforce was established (8 May) to help tackle the issue – in which time another 508 dogs have been stolen. The Kennel Club is urging more transparent recording of pet theft on a central database, so that underlying causes of dog theft can be

the effects of the last 18 months on both the world of work and people’s mental wellbeing makes now the perfect time to retrain. “It’s no secret that the business landscape has changed dramatically since the start of the pandemic,” says Debbie. “While lots of bigname businesses have sadly closed their doors, there’s also been a huge number of people seeing this an opportunity to do something new and start a business based on something that South Yorkshire residents searching for a they’re passionate about.” rewarding, post-lockdown career change Jane Fox, senior lecturer at CPHT Sheffield says are being offered an opportunity to retrain “For those passionate about helping others, as qualified hypnotherapists when CPHT retraining as a solution-focused hypnotherapist Sheffield host their second open day on is the perfect opportunity to do just that. On Saturday, August 7th. our course, students learn how to help clients The event takes place at Jury’s Inn, Sheffield, overcome many of the mental health struggles where attendees will discover how they can use that are so prevalent in our post-lockdown solution-focused hypnotherapy to help others world, reduce anxiety and feel more calm, with a wide range of issues, all while gaining a confident, and in control.” nationally recognised qualification and learning Those who attend the open day will be invited how to build their own successful hypnotherapy to apply for CPHT Sheffield’s next course which business. begins on September 10th/11th and runs for For course leaders Debbie Daltrey and Jane Fox, one weekend per month until July 2022. Jamieleigh Clarke, a recent graduate from the Sheffield course says “This course has provided me with an amazing opportunity to train as a solution focused hypnotherapist. It is so rewarding knowing that I helped people overcome such a difficult period. I am excited to continue on this journey with my present and future clients.” Jane McPhillips another graduate adds “There were a great selection of speakers throughout the training that really gave great insight and inspiration to me to move forward with my practice”. Anyone interested in attending the event on August 7th is invited to book a slot by contacting Debbie Daltrey or Jane Fox at info@cphtsheffield.co.uk, or visiting https:// cphtsheffield.co.uk.

both the owners and the animals involved and it is quite frankly jaw dropping that 98 per cent of cases never result in a criminal charge and in more than half, no suspect is ever identified,” said Bill Lambert, Health, Welfare and Breeder Services Executive at The Kennel Club. “Not only that but when a sentence is handed out it is often treated no more seriously than a petty crime, despite the fact that there is nothing ‘petty’ about pet theft. The low charge rates and the paltry sentences are an almost open invitation to criminals looking to target innocent dog owners. Whilst most people will never be unfortunate enough to fall victim to this crime, those that do are left totally bereft but without a clear route to justice. We welcome the Government taking this issue seriously and hope that the Taskforce can deliver meaningful change that will give greater transparency in how we report and record this crime, and deliver more proportionate sentences that treat dog theft with the seriousness it deserves.” Amongst the actions being called for as part of The Kennel Club’s ‘Paw and Order: Dog Theft Reform’ campaign is for more resources to be allocated to this crime and for more transparent, centralised collection of data about pet theft, including the number of crimes, arrests and convictions. Currently, there is no central record in order to help decision makers understand the scale of the problem or the circumstances around it – for example, whether a theft was driven by opportunism or organised crime. The Kennel Club is also calling for a reclassification of how dog theft is treated in the law, as currently sentencing provisions place undue weighting on the monetary value of the pet rather than giving sufficient weight to the emotional impact of the crime. This means it is often treated in the same way as the theft of a laptop or mobile phone, rather than as a category one offence, which carries a maximum of seven years in prison in England and Wales. Dog owners are reminded that they are unlikely to fall victim to this crime but there are steps they can take to help keep their dogs safe. Bill continued: “There are steps that people can take to help protect their dogs. A dog should never be left unsupervised, whether out and about or at home in the garden and it should have a reliable recall, so that you can always see its whereabouts. It is important that all dogs are microchipped, and that their details are kept up

to date with their microchip database, and that information about your dog, such as its price or address, isn’t shared with strangers.” As part of its ‘Paw and Order: Dog Theft Reform’ campaign, The Kennel Club has produced a downloadable template letter to help the petloving public to raise their concerns with their MP and spur Government to change the law. The downloadable template letter, advice on preventing dog theft and further information on The Kennel Club’s campaign is available on the organisation’s website: thekennelclub.org.uk/ dogtheft Regional data The region that is the dog theft hotspot is the North West, with 335 dogs stolen in 2020, accounting for 14 per cent of all dog thefts. This is followed by London, with 318, accounting for 14 per cent of all dog thefts, and the South East with 304 (13 per cent of all thefts). The police force with the single greatest number of reported dog thefts in 2020 was the Metropolitan Police (318), followed by West Yorkshire (121), Kent (117), Lancashire (98) and Northumbria (97). The regions in which police are least likely to identify a suspect are the North East, with no suspect in 66 per cent of cases in 2020, followed by Wales (63 per cent) and the South East (62 per cent). The police forces least likely to identify a suspect in 2020 were Northamptonshire (77 per cent) and Dyfed Powys (70 per cent). When a suspect was identified, charges were only brought against a suspect by three forces in 2020: the Metropolitan Police, Cheshire Constabulary and Kent Police, accounting for 9 per cent, 2 per cent and 1 per cent of all dog theft cases in those forces, respectively. In 2020, a suspect was most likely to be identified but further action stopped due to evidential difficulties in the East Midlands (36 per cent), the East of England (35 per cent) and Yorkshire and Humber (34 per cent).

TRAMLINES FESTIVAL 2021 IS HAILED A HUGE SUCCESS Tramlines, Sheffield’s biggest festival of music, art and comedy, has come to a close marking a landmark moment for the city and the UK live events industry. 40,000 revellers a day attended the sold-out event at Hillsborough Park from 23rd to 25th July as Tramlines became the largest festival to return in Western Europe and among the first to join the Government’s Events Research Programme. Highlight performances over the weekend came from The Streets frontman Mike Skinner who popped a bottle of champagne on Sarah Nulty’s Main Stage in celebration of crowds coming together after periods of extended lockdown. When disco diva Sophie Ellis-Bextor brought her popular Disco Kitchen livestream series to real life audiences with a jukebox of tunes including a euphoric cover of Madonna’s ‘Like A Prayer’. Almost stealing the show was Dizzee Rascal who had crowds in the palm of his hand. The gratitude oozing from Dizzee on Sunday evening was touching. As he donned a Tramlines scarf, he said, “It’s been two years since I’ve touched a stage – I’m gona do this again”. Tramlines gave dozens of bands and artists the opportunity to play music that was recorded in lockdown to live audiences for the first time. The Streets’ Freedom Day single, ’Who’s Got The Bag’ sent crowds jumping; Little Simz made the live debut of her single ‘Little Q’; and ‘End Of The Earth’ from the second album of Sheffield indie-rockers, The Sherlocks, also went down a storm. Tramlines 2021 marked a new beginning for festival goers, as friends and loved ones – some who hadn’t seen one another for over a year - were able to come together without having to wear masks or socially distance. As part of the Events Research Programme, Tramlines trialled the NHS Covid Pass system as an extra layer of protection for festival goers. It was a first for everyone, but the vast majority were well prepared and simply showed their NHS COVID Pass

at the gate, proving they were fully vaccinated or had a recent negative NHS Lateral Flow test. The festival’s hard working and friendly team of Ambassadors gave anyone who needed it a little extra help to complete the process. After considerable preparation, this was a straightforward addition to the festival’s measures to minimise the risk of infection at the event and in the community. On this year’s bigger site, revellers found T’Other Stage in its own new arena, bigger bar marquees and more toilets, all designed to maximise space and help the audience to feel comfortable as they made their music festival return. Tramlines’ experience of how the new measures worked in practice will help the ERP’s research into how future events might run.

Tramlines’ new cabaret stage, The Open Arms was also a huge hit and added even more colour to the programme. Leadmill’s resident club night, Club Tropicana took over on Friday night and set the party mood with 80s and disco hits; Shaun Williamson’s Barry-oke was a laugh and a half with him belting out ‘Mustang Sally’ with festival goers, while alternative entertainment came from Warda Yassin, Sheffield’s Poet Laurette.

Local Sheffield talent was also well represented with standout performances from The Reytons, Lucy Spraggan, and Tramlines 2021 ‘Apply To Play Winner’, Rumbi Tauro. Tramlines Festival would like to personally thank each and every person who attended the event, the workers who helped stage it, and to the many volunteers who without their support, Tramlines would not be possible.

For festival organisers, it was an emotional but rewarding weekend. Tramlines Operations Director, Timm Cleasby said, “After 18 months of strangeness, it was unbelievable to be back in the park again. There have been so many hurdles we’ve had to jump to get here and honestly, it’s been quite a rollercoaster. It’s been great to see so many happy smiling faces from crew getting back to the thing they love to revellers having the time of their lives watching the bands they love. Hearing the first band ring out over the festival was an emotional moment. I’d really like to thank everyone for playing their part with the NHS COVID Pass system. It ran very smoothly and by being part of the Events Research Programme, together we’re helping to pave the way for festivals and live events to get back to normal. I’m full of gratitude for everyone; our amazing crew and suppliers, the support from the DCMS, Public Health Sheffield, Sheffield Council, and of course our fans. Thank you all for helping us do this, we love you all and we can’t wait to see you all next year.”

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury Unfinished business for Hunt Owls reveal 2021/22 kits! The Owls are proud to unveil our official home and away kits ahead of the 2021/22 season. The strips are the first produced for the club by Italian technical sportswear provider Macron, with whom Wednesday partnered this summer in a longterm deal. Designed and manufactured using the very latest technological trends and materials, the kits represent panache and comfort combined with Macron innovation. The home strip showcases our traditional blue and white stripes with black shorts and socks, while the away offering is a completely fresh, eyecatching shade of pink with black shorts and

pink socks. The shirts also feature a stylish Korean neck, button-down collar and will be on sale with a classic sponsor-free frontage. In a shift from recent years, the Macron shirts on sale are identical to the ‘pro-fit’ jerseys as worn by the players. The soundtrack to the reveal video is performed by Sheffield band and Owls fans The Sherlocks, who will play the main stage a corner kick away from Hillsborough at Tramlines on Saturday. The Sherlocks were central to the launch, filmed entirely in Steelyard Kelham as a nod to our community ties. Steelyard is located

SUTV Live is ready to be launched FOR NEW SEASON The club’s in-house TV channel, SUTV Live will broadcast from Bramall Lane on every matchday during the 2021-2022 campaign, providing free pre and post match shows, as well as offering the platform for live streams and/or audio of Blades matches. It will be available to Blades fans around the world, whether they are watching from the comfort of their home or the concourses of S2. And Unitedites can expect to see the views and opinions of Brian Deane, Chris Morgan, Kevin Gage and others across the season. The trio above – with around 700 Blades appearances between them – have been approached to be guests on SUTV Live, as have other well-known and popular faces associated with the club. In addition, fronting the show will be a pool of presenters that will engage with Blades fans, including bright new talent Ashleigh Wilmot supporting two faces who are familiar with Bramall Lane – John Rawling and Paul Walker. Blades fan Matthew Young will commentate on every game, his voice was heard on U23s and U18s fixtures last season, and as programme editor, his knowledge is unrivalled. SUTV Live is available at live.sufc.co.uk or the Sheffield United app. Subscription information will be made available at a later date. *SUTV Live will also provide live streams and/ or audio of all of United’s fixtures this season, although availability will be dependent on broadcast regulations.

in the thriving area of Kelham Island and caters for Sheffielders of all ages, with its vibrant mix of restaurants and bars complemented by great music and alternative retail outlets.

Our sincere thanks go to Steelyard, the Sherlocks and Lens Go Visual Media, all of whom went over and above in supporting the Owls. Sale dates for the 2021/22 strips will

follow in due course and we look forward to welcoming the team from the tunnel with a brand new look and Wednesdayites back in the stands!

Jack Hunt says he wants to help bring the good times back to Hillsborough after the right back completed his return to the club last week. The full back enjoyed a positive first stint with the Owls but believes he has unfinished business in S6. Hunt was a mainstay in the Wednesday side that twice made it to the play-offs in the Championship. The task at hand ahead of the 2021/22 campaign is to mount a promotion challenge at the first time of asking and the 30-year-old is ready for the challenges that will come his way. Speaking to swfc.co.uk: “It almost feels like unfinished business because when I was here before, we didn’t quite get over the line for promotion twice, obviously that was to get into the Premier League. “The task in front of us now is to get promotion back to the Championship and that is the reason I have come here

Tommy Rowe believes the pre-season friendly against Premier League side Newcastle United was a good marker for where Rovers are at. Despite a narrow 3-2 defeat at the Keepmoat Stadium, Rowe says it was a good night’s work against an almost full strength Newcastle side. He said: “It was a good workout, we knew what to expect coming up against a good side that would cause us problems but we’ve worked hard in the past couple of weeks to be ready for that. “As a unit we’ve worked a lot on the way we want to play, it’s been a tough but enjoyable pre-season and this game enabled us to showcase what we’ve been working on.

Having the fans back will be a big boost This is the last time we were treated to the famous roar at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, when the Millers welcomed the MK Dons to South Yorkshire back in February 2020. Unbeknown to the crowd at the time, this was the last time they’d see their team in the flesh for just under 17 months. On Tuesday night, supporters’ long exodus from AESSEAL New York finally comes to end, when the Millers host Newcastle United in a pre-season fixture. Rotherham United defender Michael Ihiekwe played in the last game infront of supporters and admits that seeing them back is something he’s very much looking forward to. “It’ll be nice to get back to the New York, we haven’t played there this season and it feels like a lifetime ago since we had the fans back with us,” Ihiekwe told www.themillers.co.uk. “Having them back will be a big boost. It’s a weird one because once the game starts you’re fully focused, but it is nice to have that familiar feel of having fans back in the stadium.” “Even coming away, at Grimsby and the other night against Harrogate, seeing fans gives you an extra buzz

to do that this season. “The last time I was in League One I experienced promotion and hopefully if I can pass on any advice and go through that again, then there would be no place in my eyes that’s better to do that than here.” The defender brings a wealth of experience to Hillsborough and, as touched upon by the man himself above, has gained promotion from League One in the past with former club Huddersfield. Despite interest from other clubs after falling out of contract with Bristol City, whom Hunt joined after leaving Wednesday in 2018, the full back was in no doubt as to where he saw his future. “It was a simple phone call from the manager and he told me how he wants to play as a football team and it ticked a lot of boxes for me, front foot attacking football,” Hunt told swfc.co.uk. “He’s told me where he sees me playing in his team

and told me how he thinks my experience can help, the conversation went into depth and it’s something I want to be a part of. “The manager is an all-round good person and I’m looking forward to working with him on a day-to-day basis – how he wants to play football I feel is the right way. “The fans know me, I like to play on the front foot, I know my first job is to defend but I will join in with the attack as much as possible, it’s something that I like to do. “This is a fantastic place and somewhere I didn’t want to leave in the first place so to be back I’m just very thankful that I’ve got the chance to play in front of the home fans again. “It’s our job to get the fans off their seats and if we can do that, it’s an electric atmosphere here. If we can get to the top end of the table, hopefully we’ll see more and more fans flooding in and we can put smiles on people’s faces.”

“The way we kept our discipline with and without the ball is a positive, the manager wants us to set the tone for the season in these games and play with intensity.” Rowe scored the first Rovers goal in front of fans for more than 16 months, and says it felt special to have them back in the stadium to witness a new era beginning. He added: “Having fans back was fantastic. It felt a little bit surreal hearing that roar when we came onto the pitch, hopefully that continues and we all push forward together. “I think in spells we’re performing how the manager wants and the patterns are emerging, it’s enjoyable to play that way and you see teams at the top level having success doing it. “It’s so hard to do, but when you get it right it’s brilliant. You can see the fans are enjoying it as well because you can see we are trying to get on the front foot.”

and a fire in your belly. “Nothing is different in the changing room before because everyone is fully focused on the game ahead and getting each other up for that, but at the games there is definitely a better feeling atmosphere-wise. “Even little things, during the second half against Grimsby and their fans were saying a few things to me, even that is brilliant as a player and keeps you switched on. It’s what football is all about.” The Millers step up their preparations for the 2021/22 campaign by welcoming higher opposition to South Yorkshire this week, beginning with Tuesday’s visit of Newcastle United, before hosting Middlesbrough on Friday. Ihiekwe has been In fine form during the off season, and Saturday’s late winner against Grimsby was his third goal in as many games. The defender though, insists that as a defender, helping the team is the most important thing. Whether that be scoring or keeping clean sheets. “The season starts in under two weeks and we’re looking to get fit and firing ahead of that. Scoring goals is something that, as a defender, is always something I can look to improve on. “From my point of view it is not the be all and end all. Keeping a clean sheet and defending well is more important and goals area always a bonus. “However, whatever I can do to help the team is ultimately the most important thing for me and if I can help in any way I can, then I will try to do that.”
