RUGBY LEAGUE WC POSTPONED UNTIL 2022 Rugby League World Cup 2021 (RLWC2021) and the UK Government last week announced their intention to stage the flagship event in the international Rugby League calendar in 2022. The extremely difficult decision was taken by the RLWC2021 Board, which includes representation from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and the International Rugby League (IRL) Board This follows extensive and urgent consultation conducted by RLWC2021 Chief Executive Officer Jon Dutton and his team, which engaged players, competing

nations, the Rugby League Players Association (Australia), UK Government, hosts, commercial and broadcast partners. Tournament organisers faced several unique and complex challenges with the most significant being the non-release of up to 400 players, match officials and staff members from the NRL competition in Australia. This is despite all requests from international rugby league federations having been met which included the rigorous health measures that have been keeping thousands of elite athletes from around the world safe whilst

competing in major sporting events across the UK over the last year. Ultimately this decision has been detrimental to the plans and ambitions of many of the competing nations and potential replacement teams. A key factor was ensuring that fans of Rugby League are able to enjoy the best possible tournament, which was not possible under these circumstances. Councillor Alison Teal, Executive Member for Parks, Wellbeing and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “Throughout the pandemic Rugby League World Cup

organisers have worked extremely hard and faced many challenges in trying to stage the tournament this year, and we therefore understand and support the decision to postpone until 2022. This gives us another year to plan, recover from the pandemic, create excitement and build on the lasting legacy that the event will bring to Sheffield. “A delay until 2022 means that we can still play our part, making sporting history as hosts of the biggest and best tournament Rugby League has ever seen. We’ll continue working closely with our partners and look

forward to celebrating the tournament, welcoming teams and fans to Sheffield next year, and to progressing the many opportunities it brings to grow rugby league in the city.”

Information on the rescheduling of the tournament and new dates will be released by organisers in due course. Sign up for the latest news and ticketing updates. For existing ticket holders details regarding the next steps for ticket transfers and refunds will be provided directly by no later than 12 August 2021.

Olympic Champion Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill urges Sheffield to unite against dementia Vicky McClure said: “Last year, while we couldn’t walk together in person, I was determined that my family and I would walk in memory of my nana locally anyway, and I was in awe of the sheer number of people who also stepped onto their local streets to raise vital funds for the charity. This year, I am delighted to say that people can again unite at 20 locations across the UK, to create new memories together and support the 850,000 people with dementia. There’s never been a better or more important time to get involved.” Comedic legends Hugh Dennis and John Bishop will also be supporting Memory Walk and Only Fools and Horses’ favourite, Sue Holderness will be taking part in memory of her late mother. Actor Sally Lindsay who starred in Still Open All Hours and has recently finished filming her latest project, will be attending a walk, in memory of her grandmother. Thousands of people are expected to walk in celebration or in memory of a loved one living with dementia, with the leading dementia charity hosting 20 organised walks across the UK, including at Clumber Park, Worksop,

and Temple Newsam Estate, Leeds. People can also organise their own Memory Walk at a time and location of their choice with a group of close friends and family. However, people choose to take part, money raised will help Alzheimer’s Society continue to support the 850,000 people with dementia through its vital services (like the Dementia Connect support line) which have been used over 5 and a half million times since March 2020 People affected by dementia, worst hit by coronavirus, face a difficult road to recovery as a result of thousands having symptoms increase and mental health deteriorating due to a lack of social contact, routine and interruptions to essential care and support. In addition, this caused 50,000 to go undiagnosed, unable to get the help and support that is most effective the earlier you get it. Alzheimer’s Society’s crucial work has never been more needed. Visit memorywalk.org.uk to find out more about organising your own Memory Walk or taking part in Alzheimer’s Society’s organised events this Autumn.

Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill has joined a host of star-studded names who are urging the public to put their best foot forward this Autumn for Alzheimer’s Society’s flagship fundraising event Memory Walk, sponsored by Santander, including the walk at Clumber Park on 3 October. Famous faces are backing the public who are taking part to raise vital funds for people affected by dementia, many of whom are in desperate need of support in the wake of the pandemic. Dancer and choreographer, Dame Arlene Phillips, is supporting this campaign in memory of her late father, Abraham, who had Alzheimer’s. Game of Thrones villain Iwan Rheon lends his support in tribute to his Nain, Beryl, who sadly died from vascular dementia in 2008. Memory Walk, also has the backing of Olympic Gold medallist, Ennis-Hill. Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, Santander UK brand ambassador, said: “It’s fantastic that Memory Walk events on location are back after a year break because of Covid, alongside the option to take part in your own organised walk. I hope everyone signs up to one of this Autumn’s events, and has an wonderful time together again getting out and about while also raising money for this very special cause. I’m proud to support Alzheimer’s Society Memory Walk, sponsored by Santander, to ensure nobody affected by dementia goes without the help they so urgently need.” Line of Duty star and Alzheimer’s Society Ambassador Vicky McClure will be taking part in a Memory Walk local to her and urging others to do the same.

Peaks Uniques - a new shopping experience INDEPENDENT makers and retailers are coming to Crystal Peaks for a new shopping venture this September. Peaks Uniques is a debut attraction for the award-winning Sheffield shopping centre, an opportunity for small businesses and individual designers and makers to reach a new market. The event was scheduled to take place in June but after being postponed by the extension of lockdown rules, it will now go ahead on September

25, with up to 40 small businesses taking part. “It is very much part of the Crystal Peaks philosophy that we love to support local independents and individuals,” said centre manager Lee Greenwood. “We know how hard the past year has been for smaller businesses and makers so it seems like a very good time to be launching Peaks Uniques and introducing our visitors to a great new range of products. “The emphasis of the day is going to be very

much on the unique, bespoke, quirky and interesting - the sort of products that differ from what we already offer in our stores and existing marketplace. Peaks Uniques will run from 9am to 4pm on Saturday, September 25, with the stalls located throughout the centre. “All the stalls will be inside and undercover so there will be no need to worry about gazebos flying away,” said Lee. “And for stall holders, there will be the extra benefit of toilet facilities, free parking, food and drink outlets,

various cash points and wifi connection, al well as the support of our Care Desk, cleaning and security teams. “We have been overwhelmed by the

level of interest and very much look forward to welcoming new businesses and new customers to Crystal Peaks.”

Businesses still wanting to check on availability for the day should visit www. crystalpeakscentre. com/events/50701/ peaks-uniques

petrol prices reach eight-year high News today reveals that, according to the RAC, petrol prices have reached an eightyear high after nine straight months of rises, with the average price of petrol now at 135.13p per litre. Car Insurance Expert at Confused.com Alex Kindred says: “Rising oil prices have been pushing up fuel costs for months, to the point that we’re now seeing the highest petrol and diesel prices seen in years. More than two in five (41%) drivers told us they feel that current fuel costs are unjustified. Competing supermarkets often offer petrol discounts and larger petrol stations can usually offer their fuel at slightly lower prices,

in order to try and entice drivers, although this could be at the expense of smaller independent providers. Fluctuation in prices, as well as varying costs between regions and suppliers, makes it confusing to know when and where we’re going to get the best deal. To help you find the cheapest fuel in your local area, you can use our petrol price finder to search for the best price. That way, you can avoid paying over the odds.” The rate of change has been bewildering for local motorists of late, and certainly the opportunity to save money is welcome.

another 25 wildlife ponds for successful venture

Since their appointment by Natural England almost two years ago, Sheffield based environmental consultancy Wildscapes CIC have delivered over 100 ponds across South Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Due to continued success, a further 25 ponds will be created within South Yorkshire this winter. The work forms part of the Natural England led District Level licensing scheme for great crested newts (GCN). This new scheme to South Yorkshire means that when a proposed development is likely to impact on GCN habitat, developers now have the option of a quicker and simpler alternative to the traditional GCN mitigation licence. Since its launch earlier this year, the scheme has not only benefited developers in terms of certainty on costs and timescales, but has provided multiple new ponds for the benefit of GCN. During the 20th century half of the UK’s ponds were lost, primarily due to the change in land use away from mixed farming, and the remaining ponds are considered to be in a poor state. This has been identified as the key factor in the decline of GCN populations. Not only does the District Level licensing scheme aid the development process, it aims to secure the long term protection of this species and their habitat. As the habitat delivery partner for the region, Wildscapes CIC aim to create new ponds in the most suitable locations to allow the newts to thrive. This is done through consultation with Natural England’s identified strategic opportunity areas, local knowledge and GCN records. Ponds are constructed within close proximity to known GCN populations and ideally in between several different GCN populations to promote breeding. All these ponds are maintained and monitored by Wildscapes CIC in South Yorkshire for 25 years. Steven Greenwood, Conservation Contracts Manager for Wildscapes CIC, comments: ‘We’re delighted that the scheme is off to great start in South Yorkshire and that there is a need for more ponds so soon following the batches we’ve created over the last couple of years. We’ve received a huge amount of interest from landowners across the region offering their land to support the creation of GCN habitat and from those looking to play their part in the preservation of this protected species’. Fully funded by Natural England, landowners are not asked to contribute financially to the pond creation/ restoration (or suitable livestock fencing if required), but simply to take a few basic measures to protect the habitat quality of the pond. The need for suitable land will be ongoing and interested parties are encouraged to contact Wildscapes CIC to discuss sites for consideration.

decathlon looks for worthy causes to receive kits

As we look forward to a summer of getting outside and playing together with friends, from Monday 9th August, Decathlon UK is asking Sheffield club representatives to nominate their local club or activity group for the chance to win a £1,000 Decathlon gift card to spend on sports equipment and kit. Nominees can include sports’ teams and activity groups who are known for offering sport support and providing a safe space for their members and those who continue to provide physical activities in deserving communities. Once all nominations have been made, a shortlist will be drawn, and Sheffield residents will be able to vote for the winning club or community group. The winner will win a £1,000 Decathlon gift card and there will also be two runners-up who will each win a £500 Decathlon gift card. Chris Gilroy, Marketing Director at Decathlon UK comments: “The past year has been an extremely difficult time for many sports’ teams and activity groups due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, but they are often the heartbeat of the community, crucial in providing a safe space and a healthy outlet for their members. Because getting back to what we love is so important this summer, we wanted to give deserving local clubs and groups in Sheffield the chance to get new kit and equipment, whilst also helping the UK lead more active lifestyles. “There are so many instances of sports teams and activity groups going that extra mile for their members and the #LetsPlayShefffield campaign encourages people in Sheffield to show how much they appreciate them and give something back to those who deserve it most.” The #LetsPlaySheffield campaign from Decathlon celebrates and gives back to the all-important local sports teams and clubs. Nominations can be made via an online form at decathlon.co.uk/landing/lets-play-sheffield/_/Ra-lets-play-sheffieldand everyone is encouraged to engage with the campaign by tagging @ DecathlonSheffield social channels, including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and using the #LetsPlaySheffield tag in their post.

Lord Kerslake To Take Up New Role as Chair of Sheffield Culture Collective Sheffield Culture Collective has appointed Lord Bob Kerslake to oversee implementation of the organisation’s inaugural strategy and help drive investment and growth in the region’s cultural sector. Lord Kerslake takes over from Dame Julie Kenny and will take up his new role in September. Sheffield Culture Collective is a public private partnership which was formed in 2019 in response to a national enquiry into how cities can use culture to drive growth and create a stronger and fairer society. It includes cultural, arts, civic and political leaders as well as senior figures from the regional business community. Last month the Collective launched its first ever strategy for how culture can unlock Sheffield’s untapped economic and social potential. In the strategy it spotlighted delivery of four pivotal arts projects which could become the north’s cultural crown jewels. These include the S1 Artspace at Park Hill, The Graves Gallery and Central Library, education and music partnership Harmony Works and Tinsley Art Project. Lord Kerslake said: “I congratulate the Collective for the excellent work it has already done under Dame Julie Kenny’s leadership in creating its ground-breaking strategy. “The task ahead is to move this to delivery. This will only be possible with a clear focus on the priorities and close collaboration across the

partnership. It will predominately be about influencing leadership and powerful advocacy. “I look forward to working with others to make the strategy a reality.” Dame Julie added: “I am delighted that Lord Kerslake has been appointed as the next Chair of the Collective. “Lord Kerslake has extensive national and local connections and experience of delivering complex strategies. This will ensure that in Sheffield, we will be able to deliver culturally important projects in the future and level up investment in culture in our great city. “Most importantly, we want to place culture and creativity at the heart of Sheffield’s future, allowing every individual and every com-

munity in Sheffield to thrive.” The strategy details wide-ranging projects and outlines how culture can be an economic shot in the arm as we navigate beyond covid. The blueprint also charts how culture can become accessible to a new audience, support tourism, drive better health, education, community and individual wellbeing. The Culture Collective’s work comes against a backdrop of reduced investment in South Yorkshire compared to other Combined Authorities. South Yorkshire’s investment totals just over £20m or £15/ person whereas West Yorkshire receives £47/person and Greater Manchester receives £38/person.

Sheffield’s Summer in The Outdoor City programme set to reignite city centre The city centre is set to come alive this summer with an exciting programme of events within Sheffield’s ‘Summer in The Outdoor City’. Fantastic new events have now been added to the programme, supported by the Council’s Economic Recovery Fund, a grant scheme to help high streets, businesses and hard hit sectors bounce back from the challenges of the pandemic. Summer in The Outdoor City is all about inviting residents to rediscover their city and district centres and attracting visitors for city breaks. From big music festivals, art trails, and sporting events, to fantastic food and drink from the city’s strong independent scene, plus amazing outdoor adventures; all can be experienced not far from home for Sheffielders. Councillor Paul Turpin, Executive Member for Inclusive Economy, Jobs and Skills and Chair of the Economic Recovery Fund Steering Group said: “This year we’re celebrating summer in the outdoor city like never before and supporting a programme of events that will make every day feel like a festival across Sheffield. After so many months of quiet streets and closed doors we want to support businesses to put the spotlight on all the incredible talent we have in Sheffield, from artisan makers and chefs to musicians and performers, and shout about the great people and places in our city. “Covid-19 restrictions have really impacted on our businesses over the past 18 months, so it was important that we put the Economic Recovery Fund

in place to support areas to relaunch creatively and sustainably and I’m really proud of the diverse and exciting programme of events that are planned for the coming months. “Through this funding we’ve seen businesses come together after a really challenging time to develop ideas for unique, vibrant events we’ve never seen in Sheffield before – there really is something for everyone. I hope everyone will join me in supporting their local businesses and enjoying all of the fantastic things on offer in Sheffield this summer.” The newly announced events will take place in the city centre and offer free live music events, makers markets, and theatrical performances including:

Summer of live music in Leopold Square Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 6-8 August to 10-12 September Leopold Square are hosting amazing live music in the open air every Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the summer! These weekends will feature some of the region’s most talented musicians so expect to hear jazz, soul, funk, world music and much, much more. Sheffield Music Trails 21 / 28 August A unique opportunity to catch some of the finest artists in the UK performing for free, at a fantastic selection of our city’s unbeatable independent venue

spaces. The trails will run on three Saturdays across August, with each taking you on a walking tour of various areas in the city.

Festival on the Square 16th-30th August A brand-new two-week festival celebrating the cream of the crop of Sheffield’s creative arts scene will be held on Tudor Square; playing host to live art installations, blockbuster film screenings curated by Showroom Cinema, a series of shows curated by Sheffield Theatres, live entertainment and circus skills, and interactive workshops. Hedgerow Market 21 August, 18 September, 9 October & 6 November A brand-new monthly market event for Sheffield City Centre, the Hedgerow Market is all about Sheffield independents – celebrating the businesses on Division Street and bringing new stalls with an abundance of fresh produce and handmade wares, artisan makers and live music. Creative Guild Makers Market 21 August, 18 September & 9 October at Orchard Square Scratch that indie buying itch and support some of Sheffield’s talented crafters and makers at Sheffield Creative Guild’s Makers’ Markets. Running in August, September and October with support from Sheffield

City Council, these will take place outdoors in Orchard Square’s courtyard. Sheffield Harvest Fayre 18 & 19 September in Sheffield City Centre Taking place in the main harvest month of the year, Sheffield Harvest Fayre is a new market style event set to celebrate the city’s vibrant food scene. More information on these events and details on what’s happening across Sheffield this summer can be found on the Outdoor City website at https://www. theoutdoorcity.co.uk/summer. Rose Wilcox, Head of Programming for the Leadmill said: “‘We are really thrilled to be launching Sheffield Music Trails this summer, after receiving funding from the Council’s Economic Recovery Fund. For grassroots music venues, the closure has had a monumental impact and now is the time for us to come together and support each other’s unique attributes that help to make up such a vibrant community of performance spaces. The Fund has been an essential opportunity for us to highlight just how many wonderful spaces we have, just how many talented artists we have and to promote ourselves and allow people a free experience of being able to explore and enjoy events across the 7th, 21st and 28th Saturdays in August. “Sheffield Music Trails is a project that has been developed completely from the Economic Recovery Fund, without it we wouldn’t have been able to benefit these businesses and artists, so I am absolutely chuffed that the Council has been able to make sure that money was available for us to offer something completely unique!”

BLADES SUFFER THE BLUES IN OPENER DARREN MOORE’S POST Slaviša Jokanović saw his first competitive game as United manager, the seasonal opener against Birmingham City, end in defeat. Maxime Colin’s first half header proved decisive for City, who managed to see the game out despite an improved second half showing that could have yielded two penalties on another day. Jokanović named an unchanged starting XI to the one that started the friendly at Doncaster for the hosting of Lee Bowyer’s side. After 519 days since the last game with fans at Bramall Lane, the traditional rendition of Greasy Chip Butty was something special, but inside the opening minute Chong fired at goal for the visitors but Egan was ideally positioned to block and clear. There were moments of promise for the Blades in the opening exchanges, but it was the visitors that took the lead on 19 minutes. A cross from the right picked out the run of COLIN and he got a run-on Osborn and headed past the dive of a retreating Ramsdale. United’s response was almost instant, but from

Berge’s through ball Burke struck the near post, before Mousset found space behind the Birmingham defence, only to drag his effort across goal. Despite the setback of conceding early, United were now on top. Mousset powered down the right and found Fleck in a dangerous position, but Colin did enough to deny the midfielder at the expense of a corner, which came to nothing. Baldock won another one moments later, but from a decent position, Osborn fired over. As half-time approached, United continued to surge forward, resulting in a yellow card for Pedersen for cynically halting the progress of Berge. Norwood was then afforded plenty of space by the defence and decided to take aim from distance, but his dipping effort went the wrong side of the post with Sarkic at full stretch. United were quickly out of the blocks in the second half, McGoldrick found space in the area to test Sarkic, before Burke broke down the right channel only for the Birmingham stopper to claim his cross at the second attempt. Mousset, in the process

Josh Windass has put pen to paper on a new deal with the Owls. The forward’s new contract means Windass has now committed to Wednesday until the summer of 2023. Windass joined Wednesday on loan from Wigan in January 2020, scoring three goals in nine games before making the move permanent in the summer of the same year. Last season, the 27-yearold bagged nine goals to finish Wednesday’s top goalscorer in the

Championship. Windass said: “I’m really pleased to get this done. “I feel settled here, the manager is great and it’s one of the best dressing rooms I’ve played in. “Promotion is want we want this year and that’s our expectation, we aren’t scared of saying it. “It’s one of the biggest clubs in Britain, the fan base have been brilliant with me since I arrived and I’m looking forward to playing in front of them again this season.”

of trying to get in the box pulled up sharply with what appeared to be a hamstring problem and was subsequently replaced by Brewster. As the hour mark approached, United were now starting to push Birmingham back and having advanced inside from the left, McGoldrick curled a good effort inches wide, again with Sarkic scrambling. At the other end, the Blades survived a let off as referee Robinson spotted a push from Chong’s cross, seconds before Colin headed into the net for a second time. Pressing United high, City created another chance on 61 minutes, as Jutkiewicz headed into United’s six-yard area

before Hogan thankfully hooked a dropping ball wide. Back on the attack, from Fleck’s shot, United had huge penalty appeals waved away, despite the ball appearing to strike the outstretched arm of Gardner, prior to Berge surging forward and going down under a challenge from Chong, but again appeals for a spot-kick were denied. 22 minutes remained as Sharp replaced Fleck, then Robinson furthered angered the home faithful as he cautioned Brewster for a foul on Gardner. Two bookings in quick succession for the Blues followed though, as Leko and Colin entered Robinson’s book, firstly for time wasting and then

for a cynical block on Brewster. Berge was driving forward and continuing to look dangerous, this time Castillo hauled him down as he advanced to the byline and was he booked, but from Norwood’s low free-kick, Osborn blazed into the Kop as the clock started to tick against United. Six minutes of added time were indicated, but in the opening minute of that Pedersen needed treatment having headed clear from Norwood’s corner. McGoldrick looked to fashion an equaliser but fired wide from 20 yards out and despite a very late corner that was the last action of note.

CHARLTON TALKING POINTS

Darren Moore spoke on a number of subjects following Wednesday’s opening day draw against Charlton at The Valley.

On Charlton… It’s a solid start and something to build on. Defensively we were sound, we were solid. We had some chances, not too many but some, and you only need one to go in to win a game. Baz nearly got it at the end, it was a great run and he was unlucky. Neither goalkeeper was worked too much and that’s credit to the defences. I thought the game was played at a high pace. We have a lot to look back on, we have a good week of training ahead and it will stand us in good stead for the Doncaster game next weekend. On Callum Paterson… Thankfully it’s good news on Patto, he’s up and around and walking around, he’s fine. We are all thankful for that because it could have been a lot worse. He’s whacked his head and I think he’s saved a certain goal so he put his body on the line for us and you can’t ask for anything more. He’s got a big bump on his head. We will monitor him closely over the next 24 hours and we

will be guided by the doctors. There will be some protocols we have to follow and we will follow them to he letter because he was knocked out for a brief period of time.

On the return of fans… Both sides had to soak up the atmosphere that was generated today, it was electric at times. They’ve been a long time away and to see supporters back was great to see for everyone. I thought our fans were magnificent and I want to say a big thank you to them for the noise they made and the chanting throughout. Let’s not forget this game was live on Sky, it was in London, it was a tea time kick-off so thank you to the 3,000 or so who made the trip down from Sheffield and I wish you all a safe journey home.

good professional with so much experience. He’s excited to be here and I’m excited to have him here. We have the right man I believe and I can tell you he beat off some fierce competition for this role. We interviewed some really strong candidates and Simon was the outstanding candidate. I think that completes my staff for now, we have a great dynamic behind the scenes with Jamie, Neil, Adriano and now Simon. On Wayne Jacobs… Wayne is a really good friend of mine, we go back many years, we’ve worked together before. He’s got a couple of weeks off so I’ve invited him in to get in and around the place. It’s not an appointment, it’s more of a friend, a very experienced pro, coming into the camp and offering some help.

On the coaching staff… I’ve brought in Simon Ireland and he’s a really

SUFC Wellens gutted for fans

Nina Wilson signs Sheffield United Women are delighted to announce the signing of goalkeeper Nina Wilson from fellow FA Women’s Championship side London City Lionesses. The 22-year-old adds competition to the Blades squad alongside current goalkeeper Fran Kitching, and already has plenty of experience in the FA Women’s Championship. Wilson was part of the Brighton & Hove Albion squad as a youngster which finished as runners-up in 2018, before going on to join Lewes and eventually Watford where she played regularly during the 2019/20 campaign. The goalkeeper then spent some time playing professionally in Iceland before returning to England to play for the Lionesses in January of this year. Now making the move north to Sheffield, Wilson is looking forward to a new challenge after becoming the club’s sixth summer signing. “I honestly couldn’t be any happier, I think it’s definitely the proudest moment of my career so far. The quality we have in the squad, it’s such an unreal opportunity for me to learn from all of them and I can’t wait to get going.” Head Coach Redfearn added, “I’ve been very impressed with Nina. She’s got good experience at this level and she’s a more than capable goalkeeper and good competition for Fran. That’s what we wanted, we want to give everyone competition.”

Owls land Premier League defender Gibson The Owls are pleased to announce the signing of Lewis Gibson from Premier League Everton. The left-sided central defender joins Wednesday on a season-long loan. Gibson enjoyed a loan spell with Reading last term in the Championship, following a temporary stint with Fleetwood in League One. An England youth international, the Durham product has proved a key performer for the Three Lions from the Under-17s through to the Under-20s. He played a major role for the Under-17s side that reached the final of the 2017 European Championships in Croatia and was in the squad as England lifted the World Cup in India the same year. Domestically, Gibson joined Everton from Newcastle in the summer of 2017 and made an immediate impact with the Toffees’ Under-23s, so much so that he was handed the captain’s armband for the final three games of the season at the young age of 17. The following season, he played a pivotal role at the heart of the 23s defence as Everton scooped a Premier League 2 and Premier League Cup double. Gibson joined Fleetwood to gain first team experience in January 2020 and helped Town to the League One play-offs before moving south to the Madejski last season. Hillsborough is the next port of call for the talented centre half, who has been allocated shirt number 4 with the Owls.

after opening day defeat Richie Wellens felt nerves got the better of his newlook side in a 2-1 defeat against AFC Wimbledon. Despite Charlie Seaman giving Rovers the lead on the 46th minute, the Dons came from behind to take three points from the Keepmoat Stadium. “I’m disappointed with the game. I don’t mind losing when you play the way you want to play and the opposition is better than you, but we never didn’t the way we wanted to play. “It was a very nervous start with eight players making their debuts and at times it was really ragged. “We scored a good goal with Charlie Seaman and it gave us a good leg up in the game. “We know where we are. I’m disappointed for the supporters after so long away and we didn’t give them the performance they deserved. “This is a rebuild and sometimes we’re going to suffer. If we suffer together, we’ll also go through the good times together.” “They were young kids making their debuts today and

Seaman: Plenty to learn from after dons defeat Charlie Seaman made his EFL debut on Saturday contributing with the opening goal in a 2-1 defeat to AFC Wimbledon. Despite getting on the scoresheet with just a minute of the second half played, Wimbledon mounted a comeback with Luke McCormick and Ayoub Assal scoring for the visitors. On making his debut he said: “It’s a dream come true. When I came back here last season, I couldn’t play so it was great for the gaffer to give me the opportunity. “I found out on Friday morning before training, it was quite nerve-wracking at the time but the boys got around me and just said “you deserve to be there so show what you can do”. It was all down to the boys keeping me confident and I thank them for that. “My two best friends game to watch – I’m thankful to them for that because they didn’t need to. It was a great moment for me and my family to make my debut but I just want to push on from here.”

I think the nervous energy got the better of them and they ran out of steam. “We’ll get better and we’ll improve. At times we did look like a team which has just been made up, which in a way we have because of the rebuild. “I’m gutted for the fans. This is a difficult league, if you’re not on it and not doing the basics right then any team can beat anyone.” On debutants Seaman, Pontus Dahlberg and Tiago Cukur: “Charlie was brilliant. To score at home on the opening day of the season, he and his family should be proud. Obviously, we need more from him now. “Dahlberg was very good. He’s played for Sweden twice and moved to Watford for big money, so we know how good he is. At times against Wimbledon, he showed his quality. “Tiago will only get better. When everyone in this team is fit and at their maximum levels then we’ll get more cohesion.” “I was happy to contribute with a goal but we didn’t get the victory and that’s all that matters. “You’ve just got to try to get yourself in the right positions. It’s all about winning at the end of the day and we didn’t do that so we just need to keep pushing.” “The last 12-months have been up and down. I was thankful to the club for giving me the opportunity and I went on loan and did really well, scored a few goals. “I came back here, but due to the league being cancelled I couldn’t play. That gave me a chance to start getting to know the staff the club so in a way that helped me get ready for this season. “You’ve got to be confident that your opportunity will come at some point. I didn’t necessarily think that it would be today but you’ve got to be ready for whatever comes your way. I worked hard in the offseason to be ready for this and I’m happy I got 90 minutes today.” “It’s disappointing to lose the first game of the season, we’ve just got to keep building on it. “That’s really our first game together as a team when we’ve had the whole squad together so we’ll have plenty to build on. “We let them back into the game too easily and that’s definitely something we can learn from and work on during the week. We’ve got games coming thick and fast and training sessions so we can keep working on stuff.”

The whole place Harding claims first had a really good PA Entertainments feel to it - Warne crown of the season “I thought we deserved the win. Plymouth had a lot of the ball, which we thought they would in fairness, they are a very good possession based team. “I thought we were the more threatening team, although I’d have liked us to maybe have the ball a little bit more than that. “Overall, I’m pleased. There were pockets of good play from us and I think we really should’ve got the third goal and then it would have been a more comfortable afternoon. “It was a good win and there was definitely something to build on. We’ll watch the game back and see where we can improve, but overall I’m pleased that we won. “After 10 minutes of the game, Sads turned to me and Rich and said ‘is it always this loud here?’ It’s gone from being soulless to feeling like it has a beating heart again with fans.”

Wes Harding has been a Miller for just under a year now, but Saturday was the first time he’s had the chance to play in front of the home faithful at AESSEAL New York Stadium. And boy did he take the chance to put on a show. Harding, playing on the right-side of a back three, shone in his position winning acclaim from the crowd, not just for performing his defensive duties impeccably, but also for offering an attacking outlet down the right flank. His best moment came 12 minutes from time, when Argyle broke forward in numbers in search of a way back into the contest. Pilgrims forward Ryan Hardie appeared to be through with the goal at his mercy, before Harding came in with a great recovery run and then a crunching tackle to avert the danger. On a day where anyone on the pitch could have won the vote, Harding – or ‘super Wesley Harding’, as the Millers fans were chanting – won 65.9% of the 543 votes cast, ahead of goal scorers Freddie Ladapo and Ben Wiles, as well as skipper Richard Wood. This poll is supported by PA Entertainments who have been long-term supporters of the club and were hailed for their recent work which involved them lighting up the stadium in the colours of the NHS and more recently, with the image of a poppy for Armistice Day. As part of the agreement, the club’s official Twitter account @OfficialRUFC will post an online poll after each Millers fixture allowing supporters to pick out their Man of the Match from the shortlist. The PA Entertainments Man of the Match will be revealed on a Monday morning following a Saturday fixture or midday on the day after a midweek fixture.
