STARS UNITE FOR ‘SIMPLY THE BEST’ MEMORIAL SHOW A Sheffield family will be at the heart of a touching tribute fund and concert launched later this year in memory of their ‘magnificent wife and truly special mum’. Tickets are now on sale for a star-studded ‘Simply The Best’ concert at Sheffield City Hall on Monday 4 October. The concert will officially launch the ‘BB With Love’ fund in memory of mum-ofthree, Bev Croke, who sadly died of breast cancer aged 61 in March this year following an 18-month battle. All funds generated by the concert’s debut at the iconic 2,000-seat venue will be

pledged to Weston Park – following the love, care and support the inspirational Bev received from both charity and hospital staff during her cancer treatment. One of Bev’s biggest passions during her treatment was reaching out to others so they did not feel alone, and her family want to continue doing this. We are proud to be working with the Croke family to support the one in two people diagnosed with cancer – to donate to the BB With Love fund online, visit https://uk.virginmoneygiving. com/BB-with-Love. “Mum always wanted to help people,” said daughter

Rachel, who will star in Simply The Best alongside her brother Matt – both of whom boast impressive performing arts portfolios. “Throughout her cancer journey, she didn’t want others to feel that they were alone and that they could reach out. “One of the big things which she always wanted was to volunteer. By setting up BB With Love, it’s like saying ‘from Bev with love’… through us, she is still able to help others. “We wanted to help Weston Park and to continue what mum wanted to do in helping people.”

Rachel and Matt trained and performed together in Sheffield from a young age before embarking on successful careers. After succeeding in a variety of professional contracts, Rachel now a Licentiate member of the International Dance Teachers Association; meanwhile Matt has starred in lead roles in London’s West End in the likes of Wicked, Singin’ in the Rain, Chicago and most recently the lead role in Aladdin. Rachel and Matt will be joined by Broadway and West End star, Kerry Ellis; X-Factor winner Joe McElderry; and Ben Forster, winner of

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Superstar’ competition in 2012. Also joining the line-up will be Faye Tozer of pop group Steps; Hayley Tamaddon, performer and star of Emmerdale, Coronation Street and Shameless; and British performer, actor and comedian Billy Pearce – with many more acts to be confirmed. Sheffield Blitz horrors could have been dwarfed by Luftwaffe ‘dambusters’ attack The Sheffield Blitz left nearly a tenth of the city’s population homeless in December 1940 but a new book reveals there was an even bigger threat on its own doorstep - one that could have allowed the Luftwaffe to wipe much of the city off the map and kill tens of thousands of civilians. ‘Sheffield’s Date With Hitler’ - a new title which chronicles the devastating two night bombing raid using scores of eye witness accounts, rare photos and more - also tells the story of the formidable resources that were brought in to protect the city from a repeat of the Sheffield Flood of 1864, regularly cited as the worst disaster in Victorian Britain. Though the legendary dam buster raids provided a massive moral boost to the country’s war effort the War Cabinet - far from celebrating - were more concerned about the Germans adopting their own ‘bouncing bomb’ technology and using it to destroy the city of Sheffield. Every ounce of British engineering and scientific ingenu-

ity was used to protect the city’s population from the possibility of a breach on any of the dams set high above the city in the Parish of Bradfield. Hundreds of military personal were stationed in the area; thick smoke was pumped out over the dams to disguise them; massive chain-like structures were hung across the water to stop low level bombing and hundreds of boats were put on standby to rescue residents in the event of a successful attack. Author Neil Anderson said: “The Sheffield Blitz killed and wounded over 2,000 people and left the city crippled but a successful raid on one of the dams could have caused death and destruction on a scale not seen since 1864 when the wall of Dale Dyke Dam was breached and 700 million gallons of water poured through the heart of Sheffield destroying everything in its wake.” Sheffield was always viewed as a prime target for attack because of its high concentration of steel and armaments factories in its East End and there were numerous bombings throughout the war. But the Sheffield Blitz raids on December 12th and 15th 1940 were on an unprecedented scale - seemingly indiscriminate bombing across the virtual length and breadth of Sheffield. The biggest single loss of life in the Sheffield Blitz was at the Marples Hotel in Fitzalan Square that received a direct hit. The tenth anniversary edition of ‘Sheffield’s Date With Hitler’ also includes details of the city’s Sheffield Blitz Memorial Trail and exhibition. The book is available from www.acmretro.com for just £19.95 (plus P&P).

Step into your walking shoes Step into your walking shoes and get ready for one of Sheffield’s most popular fundraising events…Night Strider is back! Night Strider is the popular St Luke’s Hospice charity spectacular, now in its seventh year, that sees supporters heading off on either a 10k or walking half marathon challenge. In 2020 the event went virtual for the first time as supporters did their own lockdown walks, following Government Covid-19 guidelines. And it’s safety first this

year too as participants are again encouraged to choose their own 10k or half marathon route on Saturday October 2. The Night Strider virtual challenge - sponsored by Pricecheck and Gripple - is free to enter, with a medal for everybody who finishes the challenge and returns their sponsorship money. Everybody who signs up will also have the chance to buy a Night Strider T shirt for just £5 - while stocks last. “Night Strider is a great event for the whole family to be a part of,”

said St Luke’s Projects and Events Coordinator Rachel Spofforth. “This year we’re asking you to set your own 10k or half marathon course and hopefully get family and friends to join you in the challenge - always following all the latest guidance on social distancing and health safety.” St Luke’s would like to see as many people as possible complete their challenge on Night Strider day, Saturday October 2, though it will be possible to take part throughout the rest of the month.

“What we want more than anything is to keep the spirit of Night Strider alive until we can all meet up again, hopefully in 2022,” said Rachel. “Night Strider is always a massive success and this year we need all our walkers to encourage their family and friends to give as much support as possible. “Raising £97 in sponsorship could contribute towards a family who has recently lost a loved one receiving two hours of our specialised bereavement support.

“If you were to raise £227 you could contribute towards a visit by our community nurses, delivering vital care and pain relief to patients when needed, in the comfort of their own homes. “And fundraising £633

could go towards 24 hours of specialist palliative care for a patient on our In Patient Centre. “ To find out more about Virtual Night Strider and how to get involved simply visit www. nightstrider.co.uk

SNODGRASS Singing in the shower is all fun and games until you get shampoo in your mouth. Then it’s a soap opera. My pony caught a cold. He’s a little hoarse. Girl friend: “I’m sick of you pretending you’re a Detective. I think we should split up.” Me: “Good idea - we can cover more ground that way.” My wife caught me standing on the bathroom scale, sucking in my stomach. “Ha! That’s not going to help,” she said. “Sure it does,” I said. “It’s the only way I can see the numbers.” I went to a haunted bed and breakfast in France. I left. The place was giving me the crepes. A recent study has found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer... ...than the men who mention it. 10 years ago today I asked my childhood sweetheart, my best friend and the most beautiful woman in the world to marry me... All three said “no.” Sadly, I’ve lost 20% of my sight. Sigh.... My girlfriend gets mad whenever I mess with her red wine. So I added fruit and lemonade to it and now she’s sangria then ever. family business oddfellows to hold offers complete funeral service taster events

Throughout September, to celebrate Friendship Month, South Yorkshire Oddfellows is holding events to help bring friends back together and encourage new connections after 18 months of isolation and restrictions. The Society, whose members meet up regularly in the South Yorkshire area for social and fundraising activities, says it wants to extend a warm welcome to newcomers by offering a range of taster events specially designed to put them at ease. Planned activities include walks, day trips, games afternoons, meals out, coffee mornings and social afternoons. Oddfellows Branch Secretary, Lesley Walton, explains: “The Oddfellows is all about making friends and helping people. We’ve spent much of the past 18 months ensuring our members were supported emotionally and physically, but it’s now the time to help even more people to make new friends, reconnect with old ones, and build up any social confidence that may have been lost during these really difficult times. Since the end of the last lockdown we’ve started to meet up regularly again, such as our recent Lunch/walks/social afternoons in Rotherham, Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster and Worksop. It’s been great to finally see people in person, but we’ve made a real effort during the pandemic to stay in touch with each other online, and continue to do so.” Online open days are also being offered throughout September. According to a survey carried out on behalf of the Oddfellows by Opinium , more than half of people aged over 60 said the pandemic has made them value friendships more than ever. Also revealed was how having a drink with friends was the most missed social activity for those aged 60 and above, with almost a half (44%) saying they find it harder to make new friends now compared to when they were younger. “Making friends later in life and enjoying a brew in great company is something our group can definitely help people with,” adds Lesley South Yorkshire Oddfellows is a non-profit with around 700 local members. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years ofservice I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted, and is now a well-established business. It was, and still is, a fantastic opportunity for me to grow and develop an already friendly family run business and provide our local community with a warm and compassionate service.” Completing the team at High Green is John Walton, who has been with the company for over 20 years and Sharon Clayton who joined in July 2017, while Beverley Travis and Vera Gregory look after the branch at Sheffield Lane Top, which opened four years ago. “Our aim is to be there for our clients in every way that we can and make sure that their loved one is sent on their final journey exactly as they would have wanted. Your first point of contact will be the person you deal with throughout the process and whether the death has occurred at home, in a hospital or elsewhere, we will guide from the initial arrangement all the way through to directing the funeral. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.” If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service.

MVT reveals survey results for first month of grassroots music venues reopening The Music Venue Trust (MVT) has revealed the results of a series of surveys and data collection exercises during the first month of the full-capacity reopening of grassroots music venues. The survey of 1,891 people who normally attended music events prior to the pandemic revealed that 82% of live music fans have already attended, or shortly plan to attend, a grassroots live music event. The findings also showed that 91% of attendees had chosen to take an additional personal precaution to support their safety; double vaccination, testing or immunity, with 36.8% of attendees taking more than one precaution. In addition 76% of people attending live music events are double vaccinated, compared to 61% of the general population, while 9% want to see mandatory

certification of health status as a condition of entry to grassroots venues. But only 2% wanted to see certified double vaccination as the sole mandatory condition of entry. A mix of mandatory certification options, displaying vaccination, testing or immunity, was more strongly supported by live music fans. A total of 221 grassroots music venues took part in a survey about the precautions they had taken around opening and the attendance at their events. 100 grassroots music venues were selected, with case rates and transmission rates in their locality mapped, to explore if the full capacity reopening had a discernible impact on local case rates. The findings revealed that 68%

of grassroots venues reported advance ticket sales were down on pre-Covid levels and 62% said turn up on the night (advanced sales and walk up) had also decreased. 52% of venues reported bar take was also down compared to the same period. MVT CEO Mark Davyd said, “The response from venues, artists and audiences to the Covid threat has been incredible. These survey

results clearly demonstrate a will by the live music community to create safe spaces, to take personal responsibility for ourselves and each other, and to act to Reopen Every Venue Safely. “It is particularly striking that local case and transmission rates around grassroots music venues, far from exponentially increasing as was predicted, have, in reality, exceeded the decline in rates witnessed nationally.”

Mayor Dan Jarvis thanks Penny Blackham for her work as chair of the Music Board Penny Blackham has stepped down from her role as Chair of the Sheffield City Region Music Board. Penny led the board during an unprecedented time, which saw the South Yorkshire music industry deal with the pandemic and the challenges posed by Brexit. South Yorkshire Mayor Dan Jarvis said, “Penny has done a tremendous job during such a challenging time. She has done fantastic work representing the region’s vibrant music industry at a national level whether through lobbying for government support and or fostering a better understanding of issues affecting our local music industry. We wish her every success for the future.” Alongside South Yorkshire MPs, Penny appealed to the Secretary

of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Oliver Dowden in Summer 2020 to provide more support for the music industry. Mayor Jarvis continued: “Penny has been a champion for the music sector, establishing the Music:South Yorkshire social media channels and advertising much needed opportunities to the sector. The Vice Chair of the Music Board Frank Wilkes has also stepped down from his position on the board and I would like to thank him for his commitment as well.” A review of the Sheffield City Region Music Board governance is currently being undertaken and adverts for the roles of Chair and Vice Chair will go out in the autumn.

BLADES STILL ON SEARCH FOR FIRST WIN Darren Moore: PostUnited fell to a lastgasp defeat against Huddersfield Town at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon. Billy Sharp’s goal, his 250th career strike, in stoppage-time looked to have earnt a share of the spoils for the home side, only for Levi Colwill to win it right at the death for Town. Jokanović made five changes for the derby clash against the Terriers. Foderingham made a first league start in goal, whilst Davies debut in defence. McBurnie and Norrington-Davies were also named in the starting XI, as Brewster was recalled in attack. The opening ten minutes

were scrappy, as neither team really got a grip on possession or territory, but it was the Blades who were the first to meaningfully apply some pressure. Baldock advanced promisingly down the right, but from Berge’s low cross Nicholls collected despite a clash with Sarr. More good play down the same side resulted in Basham crossing, but McBurnie couldn’t direct his header on target. The half hour mark ticked by and United threatened again, as Brewster started an attack before firing low and hard, but Nicholls gathered cleanly as McBurnie looked to pounce on

a potential rebound. Turton saw yellow having hauled down McBurnie who had seized on a slip by Pearson. From the resulting free kick, Norwood took aim, but his dipping effort was straight at Nicholls. Colwill was booked for cynically halting Basham’s progress, but Sarr rose highest to head clear another free kick into the area. Brewster then won a corner on the left, but despite win their initial ball in the visitors again scrambled clear through O’Brien, who was forced conceded to another, that was taken short and ended with Nicholls denying McBurnie with

a acrobatic effort from Egan’s header. Like the first period, the opening minutes of the second were a slow burner but approaching the hour it suddenly become all United. A flurry of balls were sent into the Huddersfield box, try as they might, it just wouldn’t drop for Brewster, McBurnie and then Egan. There were 25 minutes remaining, when Jokanović made his first change, as Sharp replaced Brewster in search of that elusive goal, but when Berge lost possession deep inside his own half, Koroma missed a good chance to test Foderingham. The game was opening up now, and worryingly the visitors were having chances, but NorringtonDavies did well to deny Campbell, only for Town to take the lead in the 75th minute. Thomas advanced before freeing KOROMA, his first effort was saved by the legs of Foderingham, but on the rebound he fired into the net. United’s response was almost instant but from Egan’s lofted ball over the top Sarr just did enough to put Sharp off from getting a clean contact and seriously troubling Nicholls. The clock was firmly against United, but

from Norwood’s cross, McGoldrick and McBurnie kept the ball alive only for Sharp to strike a perfectly timed volley straight at Nicholls. Five minutes of added time were signalled and the Blades thought they’d earnt a deserved point as SHARP fired home on the turn from McBurnie’s header down, but at the other end, Toffolo got the better of Davies following a partially cleared corner and COLWILL was ideally placed to tap past Foderingham to snatch an unlikely win for the visitors.

ahead and the future. “Everyone knows the club’s ambition this year is to get promoted and when I see everything that has happened over the last month or so, it feels like a really good place to be at the moment and that’s a big positive. “The club is moving in the right direction and it’s something I am pleased to be a part of. Things are looking up, we’ve started the

season well, the fans are back, there’s real optimism around the place and long may that continue.”

Blades: Foderingham, Baldock, Fleck (McGoldrick 77), Basham, Brewster (Sharp 65), Berge, McBurnie, Egan, Norwood, Davies, Norrington-Davies (Osborn 77). Unused: Verrips, Freeman, McGoldrick, Robinson, Bogle. Huddersfield: Nicholls, Pearson, Hogg, O’Brien, Koroma (Vallejo 80), High (Toffolo 60), Thomas, Turton, Sarr, Ward (Campbell 60), Colwill. Unused: Schofield, Holmes, Sinani, Lees.

Rotherham talking points

The Owls emerged triumphant from the New York Stadium and here are five talking points from Darren Moore’s press conference after the game.

On the win We were tight, we were resolute and what I am really pleased about is the fact that we didn’t let the penalty affect us mentally. Bailey has made a fantastic save but you still have to show resilience to recover. We think the contact was outside the area. The boy has landed in the area and it is a foul but the contact was outside. But we managed the situation and went on to win the game. It’s pleasing to see Flo off the mark because that’s important for a striker at a new club and Greg’s was your typical poacher’s goal.

On Peacock-Farrell Thia is why I was so keen to bring him to the club, he’s a first class goalkeeper. He’s calm, he’s confident and he gives confidence to those around him. Make no mistake that was not a miss, it was a save. And it’s a great save too and the turning point of the game. It’s another clean sheet for Bailey and the group, we do a lot of work on shape and discipline with and without the ball, everyone plays their part and clean sheets are a credit to them all. On the fans I wanted to go over to them after the game and show them what it means to us to have that kind of support. I was told about them before I came to Wednesday and it’s such a pleasure to see and hear them for myself. I felt so sorry

for all the fans not being able to watch their team and watch their football for those 18 months. So to have them back is fantastic, they make such a difference to the players and we want them all to know that. They have their football back.

On selection I felt it was right to make some changes today. It was always going to be a physical battle, which derbies always are. But we got a blue shirt on everything today and the players were up for the challenge, they gave it everything. I don’t like to single out anyone but I do think Massimo was first class today. We didn’t really want him going away over the summer to play international football because we wanted him ready here. But he’s had a good pre-season, he’s waited for his chance and it came today. He was equal to the physical battle in there but then they all were. Chey has come in and was just solid, we won our individual battles and when you do that you have the best chance to win the game.

Bradley-Auckland named United Women captain Sheffield United Women are delighted to confirm former England international Sophie Bradley-Auckland has been named our new club captain ahead of the 2021/22 campaign. The vastly experienced 31-year-old joined the club this summer from Liverpool and has played at the very top level for both club and country and will take the armband when the team returns to the pitch on this Sunday against Blackburn Rovers. Forward Courtney Sweetman-Kirk will take up the role of vice-captain for the new season, the 30-yearold becoming a constant in the starting eleven after joining last season, ending her debut campaign as a Blade with eight goals. With both players experienced at the top level and Bradley-Auckland having represented her country at a World Cup and Team GB at the London 2012 Olympics, head coach Neil Redfearn never had any doubts over the defender’s attributes to lead the team this season. “I know Bradders as a person, I know what type of person she is and the type of leader she is. She’s an inspirational player and she’s got good values. She wants to win, the first thing she asked before joining was ‘are we going to win games?’ That’s what she wants to do and it’s the perfect choice really. “She’s been an international footballer, an Olympian, and for our young players she’s the perfect role model. I always had her in mind right from the off, she has a love for the game, she wants to win, she’ll drive her team mates on. The Women’s boss continued “I think Courtz is relishing it too and it’s really well deserved. She comes across well, she speaks sense and she’s another good role model for the younger players. It’s important to have these characters in and around your team and we’ve got a few of them, it just makes the dressing room a lot easier to work with. “It’s a really good atmosphere at the moment. It’s a smaller squad, everyone’s got a clear sight of the first team and it’s a good place right now. Bradley-Auckland said, “It’s an absolute honour and something I won’t take lightly and I’ll do everything I can to put the team before me as I usually do anyway. “To be honest, I was pretty taken aback when I was asked! I just felt very privileged to be able to join the team and play football again, let alone lead out such a fantastic team full of great people and great players and such great backing from the club as well.” Vice-captain Sweetman-Kirk is also delighted to help lead the team ahead of the new campaign. “I’ve always tried to be that through my career, I’ve always been quite vocal. We’ve got a lot of experience in this squad but also a lot of young players too and I think it’s important that those experienced players take all that on a little bit and make sure we’ve got the right balance. We complement each other well I think and we’re both vocal but also lead by example. You look at Bradders and the condition she’s come back in after having a baby and being injured, she’s one of the ultimate professionals.”

McSheffrey seeing positives

Gary McSheffrey believes there are plenty of positives to take from his sides cup defeat to Bolton Wanderers. Despite being on top for most of the first-half, Rovers found themselves 3-0 down at half-time before a headed effort in the second-half made the game finish 4-0 in favour of the away side. On the positives to take from the game: “The first 25-minutes we were comfortably the better team. “Our front two were a major threat and it was the most fluent we have been in possession this season. “We just could not score. We’ve hit the post, Ethan Harrison’s had a one-on-one and their goalkeepers made two good saves from Corie Cole. “There was lots of positives. “Only disappointing thing is when we concede we did not regroup how we would have hoped.”

John: we showed our quality Cameron John felt Rovers did enough to claim all three points in the draw with Portsmouth at the Keepmoat Stadium. Tommy Rowe had a first-half goal disallowed, while Pontus Dahlberg kept out a Shaun Williams penalty at the other end late on.

On some of the younger players getting chances in the game: “We had a young team with two U16s have been involved, five U17s and only four second years starting. “It is all about learning and progressing so hopefully the youngsters getting this exposure will help them for the future and will benefit us going forward. “The best performers regardless of age will always play. It’s about finding them individuals to get into the first-team.”

On slotting into central defence after Tom Anderson was withdrawn: “Not much changed for me, the messages are still the same and while it was sad to see Tom go off I knew I had a job to do. “He’s a massive player for us and a really good captain, so I wanted to carry on the good work he’s been doing. “I’ve got a lot of experience in that role now so it was a fairly seamless transition.”

On the performance: “We a feel a bit hard done by that we didn’t get the win, we showed how good a team we are. “A point is a good building block and it gives us something to move forward with. “For us it’s given us confidence that we can match any team in the division. “I think we surprised them with the way we started on the front foot, but that’s the way we wanted to play.”

Paul Warne postSheffield Wednesday... “It’s a disappointing result but I’m not too disappointed with the performance to be fair. “Apart from the last 15 minutes in which I thought we lost our way, I thought we were excellent. “I was really proud of how they played first half. “Obviously missing the penalty late on in the first half and losing Chieo earlier on in the half sort of provided us with a psychological blow. “I thought we controlled the game well. We’re a bit disappointed with the set pieces today. We had eight or nine corners and really failed to get the first contacts. “We were playing against a really good side, there’s no disputing that and goals change games. They got the first and then the second was a bit fortiutous and it knocked the wind out of our sails.”

Millers receive positive update on Ogbene injury Rotherham United have received positive news concerning the hamstring injury sustained by flying winger Chiedozie Ogbene in the South Yorkshire derby against Sheffield Wednesday. Following scans and further investigation from the club’s medical team on Monday, we are pleased to confirm that the 24-year-old’s injury is not as bad as first feared and should not rule him out of first team action for the foreseeable future. With club staff continuing to monitor the injury and the rehab that will follow, Head of Medical Stephen Gilpin remained cautious in his prognosis but couldn’t help but be positive on the news concerning the winger. “We don’t want to make promises on when Chieo will be back out on the pitch, but having had a proper look at the injury today we’re as pleased as we can be with it,” he told www.themillers.co.uk. “When an explosive player like Chieo goes down clutching a hamstring it is always a worrying sign, but we are hopeful that he won’t be sidelined for too long with this one.”

Access control issues versus Sheffield Wednesday update Rotherham United would once again like to wholeheartedly apologise to supporters who experienced issues with Season Ticket cards and turnstiles ahead of Saturday’s South Yorkshire derby against Sheffield Wednesday. For supporters who are unaware, the club changed the ticketing and access control systems over the summer after our previous partners of eight years ceased trading. Having thoroughly investigated similar problems prior to our league opener against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday 7th August, the club were assured that our suppliers had been able to rectify the issues experienced by fans on that date. Unfortunately, prior to the game against the Owls, we encountered a new access control issue which resulted in further problems at the turnstiles for a number of our supporters, and subsequently saw kickoff delayed by 15 minutes. We absolutely understand the frustrations of supporters and would once again like to reiterate that both our ticketing and IT staff are working around the clock to understand and resolve these problems. We remain confident that working closely with our new partners HID Global, we will be able to resolve the early problems we have experienced and offer a new and improved service to fans attending games at AESSEAL New York Stadium moving forwards. Should any supporters wish to call into the Red and White Shop throughout the course of this week to check whether their 2021/22 Season Cards are active they are more than welcome to do so.
