Sheffield’s response to the crisis in Afghanistan Sheffielders have shown incredible compassion and generosity in recent weeks, stepping up and wanting to find out more about how they can help people fleeing Afghanistan.
Sheffield is committed to providing support to those in need, and we’re working with local charities to ensure that people who would like to donate are able to do so. There have been many
individuals, community groups and organisations across the city who have responded quickly, and we’d like to thank everyone involved. Sheffield City Council is working with two charities in particular, City of Sanctuary and ASSIST to help facilitate donations to support refugees. Donations can be made by visiting www.sheffield.
cityofsanctuary.org/ donate/ or https://www. assistsheffield.org.uk/ donate-assist. Although donating is the best way to support organisations immediately, there may also be opportunities to support these charities in other ways, such as volunteering or fundraising. Co-Operative executive members Cllr Alison Teal

RLWC2021 would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the process of confirming the dates for 2022 and we look forward to working closely with all nations, sponsors, partners, venues, host towns and cities as we finalise the revised tournament schedule. Jon Dutton, RLWC2021 Chief Executive, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to announce the revised dates today and can now look forward to the biggest and best Rugby League World Cup ever in the autumn of 2022.” “The continuing conversations with all our supportive hosts and venues have been hugely positive. We are confident that we can deliver a similar tournament schedule, which will be communicated as soon as possible.” “Obviously, we are disappointed the tournament will not be happening as originally planned but we are determined to make next year a celebration of sport, unity, people, place and civic pride.” Troy Grant, IRL Chairman said, “The Rugby League World Cup is the international pinnacle of our sport, and I am delighted that the new dates have been agreed meaning we can now push forward towards autumn 2022.” “Jon Dutton and the entire RLWC2021 team have worked tirelessly following the postponement being announced and I have total confidence that the 2022 incarnation of the tournament will be the best we have ever seen both on and off the field of play.”

The earlier start means RLWC2021 will fall between the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2022 FIFA World Cup meaning that existing broadcast partners, will continue to air all 61 games throughout the tournament. Today, RLWC2021 would like to reaffirm to those who wish to retain their tickets for 2022, that there is nothing further to do, as tickets will be automatically transferred to the corresponding fixture next year. As a thank you for continued fan support, RLWC2021 have created “The Foundation Fan Squad”, this will be an exclusive group who will receive a thank you pack including an updated wall planner and the chance to win exclusive prizes, access to content and other benefits for the next year. While it is hoped all ticketholders decide to stay with us and support the tournament in 2022 it is understood some fans may not be able to attend. Today the first general admission ticket refund window will open for a three-week period. For those who have purchased a RLWC2021 ticket product through official platforms, please visit www.

Rugby League World Cup 2021 (RLWC2021) last week confirmed the dates for the tournament that will now take place between Saturday 15 October – Saturday 19 November 2022 including matches at Sheffield’s Bramall Lane Stadium. RLWC2021 can also announce that the opening match and the men’s / women’s double header finals will be played, as originally planned, at St James’ Park, Newcastle and Old Trafford, Manchester respectively. We are delighted that these two iconic venues will remain in place to open and close the biggest and best Rugby League World Cup ever. The new tournament dates have been confirmed following detailed consultation with a number of partners. In particular, RLWC2021 would like to thank Super League Europe and the member clubs who have been extremely accommodating. The dates see the tournament move one week earlier than scheduled in 2021 to maximise attendance and viewership. Work now continues to release a full revised match schedule by no later than the end of the year.

News, Information and Advice have you thought of buying a pet?
As pet ownership has boomed, fraudsters have seized the chance to make a quick buck. Many people have purchased, or considered buying a pet over the past year-and-a-half, often as part of lifestyle changes made during the pandemic. It’s easy to be drawn in by photos of cutelooking animals online. But when scrolling through pet ads, it’s worth considering that over £2.6 million was lost by would-be owners in the 2020/21 financial year, after they had put down deposits for animals advertised online – which turned out to be scams. Action Fraud, which released the figures, says the total is an increase of over 20% compared with the previous financial year. Victims have reported being scammed on social media, online marketplaces and specific pet-selling platforms, with many duped by fake promises of dogs and puppies or cats and kittens. Jim Winters, head of fraud at Barclays, says: “Over lockdown, we saw a particular rise in pet scams, where people paid in advance for a pet that they’ve seen online or been sent images of, only to find out the animal doesn’t exist. The issue with these types of scams is that when people are buying or investing in something that they really want, such as a family pet, suspicions they may have are often overlooked and they go against their better judgment, which leaves themselves open to being duped,” Winters warns. “Our advice is to stop and think before making a purchase, always ask for a second opinion from a friend or relative, and never just assume that the seller is who you think they are. Always make sure you complete extra research and read reviews to ensure the person, company or website you are buying from is genuine,” he adds. “If you have concerns, do not give any personal or payment details, or be pressured into sending money, and remember – if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.”
update on ponds forge leisure pool
The Council have issued an update on essential works being carried out at Ponds Forge. The essential work at Ponds Forge to remove the flumes from the leisure pool is progressing well. Whilst we are disappointed that the leisure pool has had to close to allow this essential work to be carried out, we have agreed to bring forward a programme of other planned work, including an upgrade of the Leisure pool area. The closure gives us an opportunity to modernise some existing features, including creation of a new disabilityfriendly zone and baby swimming area, a more powerful wave experience and refurbishment of the toddler zone and lazy river area. Andrew Snelling, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Trust said: “While the leisure pool is undergoing refurbishment, the rest of Ponds Forge remains open, with many swimmers still enjoying use of the competition pool. The new features will ensure that Ponds Forge offers families a better leisure experience in the centre of Sheffield, complementing Hillsborough Leisure Centre and the other community swimming pools across the City. The work is being carried out in partnership with Sheffield City Council and we are grateful for their support. We anticipate the Leisure pool, including the new features being open at the beginning of January 2022.” Sheffield City Council Leader, Councillor Terry Fox said: “I understand that a prolonged closure of the leisure pool will be disappointing for
what are the updated rules on foreign travel?
Here we answer 12 key questions about the current situation. It is nearly impossible to keep up with changes to the rules for international travel during the pandemic. What system is being used? A risk-based traffic light system determines the testing and quarantine requirements for arrivals into the UK. What happens if I arrive from a green list country? That is the low-risk tier, so all travellers are exempt from quarantine. What about testing? You have to buy one post-arrival PCR test, which typically costs around £65. Sounds ok. What destinations are on that list? The green list includes countries and territories such as Austria, Barbados, Croatia, Germany, Gibraltar and Malta. What about hotspots such as Spain, Italy and Greece? They are all on the amber list. What are the amber rules? Fully vaccinated travellers are treated the same as those arriving from a green country. How about those who have not had both doses of a coronavirus vaccine? They must self-isolate for 10 days, and take two post-arrival PCR tests. Is there a way of reducing the quarantine period? You can buy a third test to be taken on or after day five. If you get a negative result, you can leave selfisolation. What about the red list? This is the one to avoid if possible. Arrivals from red list countries must stay in a quarantine hotel for 10 days. How much does that cost? The price for solo travellers rose from £1,750 to £2,285 earlier this month. What places are in the red tier? There are currently 60 locations on the red list, such as Mexico, Pakistan, Turkey, and much of South America and Africa. Is there anything else I need to do? Whatever country you arrive from, you must take a test in the three days before you travel and have filled out a passenger locator form. some people, but it’s really important that as many improvements and maintenance works as possible are completed now, to prevent further disruption and closures in the future and to make sure we’re investing efficiently in Sheffield’s leisure facilities. We recognise the need for facilities that are fit for purpose, well maintained and provide quality health and leisure experiences for everyone in Sheffield. Ponds Forge has a significant role to play in that and will support our plans for a future leisure strategy for Sheffield. We look forward to reopening the new look family pool early next year and to sharing more details about city wide future leisure plans in the autumn.” The essential work and improvements are estimated to cost in the region of £500,000 and are being funded through existing budgets as part of the planned lifecycle and maintenance programme made available to Sheffield City Trust by Sheffield City Council.
how to avoid a scammer
Unfortunately scammers are becoming more sophisticated in the way they try to steal information from us, and people around the UK regularly fall victim to financial scams. We take a look at some financial scams that catch people out with advice on what you can do to spot them and stay safe. Phishing While most scam emails (like the classic ‘Nigerian Prince’ letter) go through to your Junk mail folder, the odd one will slip through to your inbox. Watch out for emails that look like they come from a reputable organisation – like the bank, post office, internet supplier or telephone company – but ask for personal information, or have poor spelling or links to strange websites in them. These scams have become more and more sophisticated through the years, so be sure to check carefully to make sure it is legitimate, and remember no reputable website will ever ask you disclose personal details over email. If you think it might be legitimate but aren’t sure, open your internet browser and visit the organisation’s official website, or phone them up. Vishing A new type of scam is the ‘no hang up’ trick, known as vishing. A fraud phones pretending to be from the bank or police, to say that your card has been stolen. They ask you for information to confirm who you are, or advise you to call the bank. You hang up and dial your bank, but the fraudsters stay on the line, silently listening as you dial the phone number. When you put the phone back to your ear, they pretend to be a representative in the bank and take your details. Sometimes these fraudsters even send a ‘courier’ around to homes to collect cards. Your bank will never ask for your account details or PIN numbers over the phone. If you are called by a bank and advised that you are a fraud victim, hang up and then either call your bank from a different phone line, visit your branch, or leave a couple of hours before phoning on your normal phone. The friend in need A particularly cruel form of scamming is when a criminal hacks into the email or social network profile of someone you care for, then asks you for money in their name. Common friend in need scams are the embarrassed grandchild on holiday who has ‘run out of money’, a friend who needs ‘help with bills’ or a family member

who has ‘lost a credit card’. If you get an email like this, phone the person who emailed you or contacted you on Facebook and ask them if this is legitimate. If it isn’t, let them know that their email address has been used in this way. The fund transfer A scam that comes via email, phone or letter sometimes is the fund transfer message, in which you are told that if you send cash abroad using a money transfer you’ll be paid back into your bank account with extra commission. These sorts of scams are often used by criminals who launder money, and if you were to give them your account details or send them money you might not only have your own money stolen, but be taking part in criminal activity. Sometimes you might be asked for ‘advanced fees’ for something you didn’t ask for, advised of a fake pension scheme, or even invited to buy shares of a company. Ways to protect yourself Thankfully there are things you can do to minimise the risk of financial scams. • Always shield your PIN number at ATMs Learn how to spot card trapping devices at cash machines • Use complex passwords for websites, and make sure you have a different password for each site • Never write your PIN number or passwords down in your phone or a notebook. Use a password manager like Lastpass instead • If you’re buying a product online, read reviews of the website first to make sure it’s legitimate • Never give out your personal details to someone who should already have that information – from bank account details to credit card numbers, PINs, birthdates or addresses • Don’t transfer money to someone you don’t know • Don’t bin bank statements or letters with personal information on them – shred them • Never click on a link in an email if you’re not certain of the source, and never reply with your personal information

City set to celebrate Jamie’s Sheffield roots Sheffield is set to welcome Jamie home with a very special premiere of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, the film adaptation of the hit musical, on 17th September – the same day it launches on Amazon Prime Video around the world. In recognition of the central role Sheffield has played in the film, a premiere will be held at the Crucible and Tudor Square (where there will be a red carpet welcome) on the evening of Friday 17th with the stars of the show paying homage to Sheffield Theatres, who originally commissioned and staged the musical that the film is based on. There will also be special fan area with spaces for a lucky 96 members of the public on the day. The film was produced and directed by Sheffield-ers, Warp Films and Jonathan Butterell; with filming taking place in and around the city, and featuring many actors and supporting cast
with Sheffield roots. To celebrate this special event and the history the Jamie story has with the city, Sheffield City Council are teaming up with Warp Films (who produced the film) and Prime Video, to showcase a free display of props and costumes in the Winter Gardens from Friday 17th to Saturday 25th September for anyone to come along and get closer to the fabulous story of Jamie. The Council are also funding Sheffield based Cinema For All to organise free community screenings around the city, taking place in sync with the premiere at the Crucible, to ensure wider access and inclusivity to this great cultural production. The venues with Cinema For All screenings are: • Film Unit at University of Sheffield • Abbeydale Picture house (who will also be hosting an afterparty) • Kelham Island Film Club • The Civic in Barnsley
On top of this, there will be afterparties happening in various places around the city. Participating venues have been given special permission to use logos and artwork from the film by Prime Video, and these are being distributed by the Council once ideas and plans for venue parties/ menus etc have been submitted. More information, including how to try to get one of the lucky fan spaces in Tudor Square, the costume and prop display, how to book a free ticket for a Cinema For All screening, or how to find out which venues are hosting parties can all be found online at www. welcometoSheffield.co.uk/jamie Everybody’s Talking About Jamie will be launched on Amazon Prime Video on 17th September and will be in selected cinemas across the country, including Sheffield Showroom, from the same day. Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said:
“It’s fantastic to see the support in Sheffield for this brilliant film and the really positive impact it’s had on people across the city who have been involved from the start – from sharing local knowledge of the best locations to working on the production as cast and crew. “Our city is known for its warm welcome, grit and vibrancy and you can see those themes running right through Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. Sheffield-ers can be proud of the finished product and it’s only right that we celebrate it here. I hope everyone can get down to the display for an added experience that celebrates the whole story.” Jonathan Butterell, Director of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, along with writer Tom MacRae and composer Dan Gillespie Sells, said: “We couldn’t be more proud that Jamie New is coming home. On September 17th our film Everybody’s Talking About Jamie
goes out to 240 countries and territories across the world on Amazon Prime Video and to cinemas across the country. “From the Crucible Theatre and in the streets of our wonderful city and region we will celebrate our
glorious rainbow diversity and come together in this place where we all belong to sing and dance and revel in the fabulousness of each and every one of us. “It’s gunna be chuffin’ marvellous. See you there.”

BLADES COLLECT DESERVED POINT AT LUTON Darren Moore: PostUnited’s trip to Kenilworth Road on Saturday yielded a deserved draw, in a contest where either side could have snatched all three. George Baldock arguably had United’s best chance in the opening minute, whilst Harry Cornick struck the crossbar after the break with Luton’s clearest opportunity. It was an excellent start from the Blades and Baldock had a sight of goal within the first 40 seconds, but from a deep cross by NorringtonDavies, he headed over, before the visitors won a couple of corners in quick succession after Naismith had been booked for a lunge on McBurnie, from the second of those,
Fleck crossed to the back post, but Davies couldn’t stretch far to make a telling contact. After what had been dominant start by United, Luton had their first chance on 18 minutes and it was a good one too, Cornick crossed from the right, but from six yards out Adebayo ballooned his header over the bar. Shortly after the half hour, the Blades were forced into a change as Baldock limped out of the action and was replaced by Bogle. Half-time was approaching as United won another corner after Naismith headed behind following a period of sustained possession in the attacking third, but Norwood’s inswinging
delivery was headed away at the near post and that was the last meaningful action of the first period despite four minutes of added time following a couple of lengthy stoppages. Boss Jokanović made what appeared to be a tactical change at the interval, as Freeman replaced Basham. Egan was cautioned for halting the progress of Adebayo having been caught in possession and from the second phase of the resulting free kick Luton had two clear openings, the second of which saw Campbell hit the side netting after Naismith had headed across the face of goal. Once again, following a spell of possession,
CONOR IS A BLADE Sheffield United have added an experienced international midfielder to the ranks. Conor Hourihane has agreed a season-long loan from Aston Villa, he completed his medical at United’s Shirecliffe training complex on Monday ahead of joining up with the Republic of Ireland squad. On signing, Hourihane said: “I’m delighted to be here and cannot
wait to get started. I’ve played against Sheffield United a few times and it is an exciting club to be involved in. The manager here has a great reputation in the Championship, his Fulham team beat us in a play-off final a couple of years ago and I’m looking forward to working with him.” Hourihane, 30, has extensive Championship knowledge and his CV

emphasises his pedigree in the second tier. He helped Villa win promotion to the Premier League in 2019. He has played over 150 times for the Midlands outfit and last season, during a six-month loan stint, he was instrumental in Swansea reaching the play-offs, he scored five times in the second half of the campaign. Cork-born, Hourihane began his career at
United fashioned a chance down the right, but from Bogle’s cross, McBurnie headed over from a decent position inside the area. The home crowd were briefly out of their seats as Onyedimna raced clear and fired past Foderingham, but the assistant referee had raised his flag in good time for offside. On the hour, the visitors then survived a major scare as Adebayo applied pressure to Foderingham from a back pass, but thankfully Cornick’s effort struck the bar and bounced clear. The hosts were now the ones in the ascendency and the lively Onyedimna had two sights of goal in as many minutes, the second of which was saved by
Foderingham. With 21 minutes remaining, United made their final change as Brewster replaced McBurnie and after Berge had passed up a chance to shoot, the former Liverpool man beat his man on the right before overhitting his cross from the byline. At the other end, Cornick fashioned an opportunity for Bree, he took aim but fired wide. As three minutes of added time were signalled, Berge went down in the area under a couple of challenges, but referee Davies was unmoved and the game ended in a hard-fought stalemate. Luton: Sluga, Bree, Naismith, Cornick, Adebayo, Burke, Mpanzu, Campbell (Muskwe 84), Onyedimna (Rea 84), Bell, Osho. Unused: Shea, MendesGomes, Lockyer, Pereira, Kioso. Blades: Foderingham, Baldock (Bogle 31), Fleck, Basham (Freeman 45), Berge, McBurnie (Brewster 69), Sharp, Egan, Norwood, Davies, Norrington-Davies. Unused: Verrips, Burke, Freeman, Robinson, Osborn.
Sunderland and had a spell at Ipswich Town before making his name at Plymouth Argyle and Barnsley, clocking up more than 100 appearances for both. It was his form at Oakwell that earned him a move to Aston Villa, and he played 31 times in the top flight before last season’s loan at Swansea. Morecambe talking points The Owls were left frustrated after a dominating performance at Morecambe failed to yield any reward and they returned over the Pennines empty-handed following a 1-0 defeat. Here are the talking points from Darren Moore’s post-match press conference. On the need to be ruthless Yes we had chances and yes we have to be more ruthless. If we get the first goal it forces them to come out of their traps really but myself and the coaching staff, we will look back at this game and analyse it and see that we were dominant and the players did things that we asked of them. It was just in that final
third…they brought an extra defender on and sat deep and once they got the goal they sat even deeper and that made it even harder for us. But we will get those kind of challenges over the season and it’s up to us to find a way through. On the winner It only takes a second to score a goal and while ever it was 0-0 Morecambe were always in the game. The favour went with them when they put an extra defender on but got the goal a couple of minutes later. Credit to them, they stayed in it, they were plucky and they’ve got a good three points. The goal was a scrappy one and I’m not sure if it wasn’t one of our players who got the final
touch if truth be told. But Morecambe won’t care about that too much, they got the win and I will go down and have a chat with Steve and give him the credit.
On breaking down the opposition We are going to get games like that and I have said to the players, you have to relish the challenge. With 15 minutes to go I said ‘lads, lads, we don’t have to force it…move the ball from side to side…’. When that happens space and pockets appear but I don’t think we capitalised on that today. We do have the players to pick the lock but today we have to take the medicine now and move on. We will see the shape of the boys on Monday and look forward to the game on Tuesday. On absentees Chey Dunkley has picked up a little strain so he was missing today, it’s nothing serious but we didn’t want to risk him today. Sam was really, really close but again not worth the risk so we left him out. We expect to have them back soon. Gibbo has had a little injury but is back in training and he will step it up next week. With Massimo, we are waiting on the full verdict on his hamstring from the specialist. After the performance he put on last week he would have played today.

SUFC Wellens gutted for fans
Tara Bourne signs Sheffield United Women are delighted to announce the signing of exciting young talent Tara Bourne from Barclays FA Women’s Super League side Manchester United on a season-long loan deal. The 18-year-old can play in both defence midfield and adds more quality, depth and versatility to head coach Neil Redfearn’s squad ahead of Sunday’s FA Women’s Championship opener against Blackburn Rovers. Bourne made her senior Manchester United debut in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup last season and also featured in several matchdays squads, as well as featuring for the Reds in several pre-season friendlies this summer. The teenager is the seventh player to join the club from Man United, following in the footsteps of Fran Bentley, Naomi Hartley, Ebony Salmon, Aimee Palmer, Mollie Green and Emily Ramsey. An exciting prospect and a regular in the England youth teams, Bourne is looking forward to the opportunity to experience first team football with the Blades this season. “I’m really happy and really excited. The league is going to be really competitive this season so I’m excited to get involved now with the team and see how far we can take it. “It’s such an important phase of my development. I can’t wait to push on, getting game time is the most important thing and to get it at a club like Sheffield United, I’m just excited to push on, improve as a player and help push the team to where we want to be.” Head coach Redfearn said, “It’s a great signing for us. Tara is a fantastically talented young player and we’re thankful to Manchester United for loaning her out to us. She gives us good balance; she can play in a back three or a back four and is very comfortable in possession. “She’s a good competitor, a good athlete and she’s been in a week now and mixed really well with the girls and not looked out of place at all, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how she performs this season.”

Richie Wellens was gutted for supporters after Rovers’ 2-0 defeat to South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United.
His assessment of the game: “Sometimes we played through them easily but then we would turn back and allow them to get back into their shape. “The biggest frustration of all is we know their threats with Michael Smith and we don’t put a front screen in front of him and we dangle a leg for both goals. “We have shown where we are at and Rotherham have shown where they are at. They are a big physical team that have come down from the Championship last year. “We did not compete physically and we did not put
we have to work harder Tommy Rowe says the Rovers need to be more aggressive in their game as they lost 2-0 to local rivals Rotherham United. A first-half brace from Rotherham’s Michael Smith meant defeat for Richie Wellens’ men, despite the home side going down to the ten men in the second half. “We’re disappointed to lose the derby. We need to be ruthless and get some points on the board. “We were matched up quite evenly man vs man. We had a game plan where we thought we could expose them and there was signs of that working but it just comes down to that little bit where you have to commit and drive at your man. “Credit to Rotherham for how they have set them-
We were good value for the win - Ollie Ollie Rathbone shares his views after the local derby win againat Doncaster. “We scored two great goals, with the second coming at the perfect time for us. Obviously, the red card made it a different game, but we can be please with our performance. “We started the second half really well. The red card made us change our approach to the game. Mickel has apologised, he lost his footing more than anything and obviously all is forgiven already. “I’m really enjoying it here. I didn’t realise the level of support the club gets, the home support is amazing. “This is a Championship set up and I’m confident we can put up a challenge to get back up there, we were good value for the three points today.”
the ball in the box when playing against ten men. “I’m gutted our supporters have come away without seeing us have some good chances, particularly when playing against ten men. “This international break has come at a welcomed time.”
On injuries and game management vs Rotherham: “When we get Jon Taylor and Jordy Hiwula back it will change our dynamics massively. “We are working on things that are a bit alien to us at the minute. I had to bring on Tiago because we needed a goal but I did not want to risk him because of his calf. “I’m hoping we will have one or two bodies back for Rotherham in the Papa John’s Trophy game.”
selves up. They are a hard to beat team and physically they can dominate. We came to win our individual battles and play our own game. Too many times in this league you can get sucked into other people’s games. “We have to work harder, maintain our high standards and put everything into our training sessions before we return match action. “Don’t let games like this go by and just accept it – we never will. We want to win every game regardless of the inexperience.” “I came in to play left back and I think it says a lot about our situation that I’ve covered a few positions so far this season. “With injuries and illnesses you have to do your bit for the team and I will always do that and I know the rest of the team will too.”
Warne credits bright start for South Yorkshire derby success against Doncaster “I think our performances have great so far this season - in my opinion - we just haven’t got the goals. “Two first half goals today meant that I think we deserved it. We had a goal disallowed as well and a couple disallowed as well. “I thought our play - particularly first half - was really good. “We needed those two goals because to go down to 10 men against Donny is a bit of problem. I think their rotations are really good and they caused us more problems than we’ve had in fairness. It made it difficult for the lads. “It was just a good team performance to hang in there and not concede. “I don’t think they had an attempt on goal of note in the second half but they obviously had loads of the ball. “That is testament to the fitness of the group, the togetherness, and putting their bodies on the line. “To come in having kept a clean sheet with 10 men leaves me really pleased.”
