WATERFRONT FESTIVAL RETURNS THIS WEEKEND Following last year’s cancellation due to Covid restrictions, waterways and wellbeing charity Canal & River Trust is delighted to announce the day of family fun on the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal will return this weekend on Saturday, September 18. This year the festival will be split over two sites - Victoria Quays and Attercliffe. The free event runs from 10am to 4pm at Victoria Quays, and 11am to 3pm in Attercliffe. It will see live music and street

performances, boat trips, canoe and paddle boarding taster sessions, stalls and street food. There will also be guided walks, including taking in the canal’s Street Art Trail, a project made possible thanks to support of players of the People’s Postcode Lottery. Jade Wilkes, engagement officer and one of the coordinators of the Sheffield Waterfront Festival, said: “We can’t wait to bring the Waterfront Festival back as we really missed it last year. We know a lot of people have

been making the most of the canal during the pandemic as a place to get escape from their homes and exercise, and we know just being by water can make people feel happier and healthier. “The festival gives us the chance to show off our canal even more, as well giving people the chance to learn more about the charity’s work and how our volunteers care for the canal and make it a great place for both people and wildlife.” Anyone interested in having a stall, hosting

an activity or assisting with the festival this year should contact Jade at jade.wilkes@ canalrivertrust.org.uk. To get to Victoria Quays, the nearest tram stop is Ponds Forge, and there is also parking at Victoria

SHEFFIELD’S JAMIE CELEBRATIONS The Amazon Prime Video premiere of the new Everybody’s Talking About Jamie film is being held at the Crucible on Friday 17th September, with a red carpet arrival at Tudor Square. To build anticipation for the premiere events across the road from Tudor Square, Gut Level DJs will be performing in the Winter Garden between 4 and 6pm before the stars arrive. Sheffield City Council is funding Cinema For All community screenings in venues across the city (with 10% of tickets being held back and split equally between local charities via Sheffield organisation Ticket Bank and the NHS Tickets for Good program). Tickets for these screenings were snapped up in just a few minutes, but the details

surrounding the costume and prop display, as well as a list of venues hosting parties on the night of the ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’ premiere, have now also been released so that everyone can celebrate what this film means to the city. On 17 September the Winter Gardens will be hosting a special display of items from Jamie’s world. This up close and personal display features four outfits worn by Max Harwood, who plays Jamie Campbell in the film, as well as a dress and wig worn by Hugo’s iconic drag persona Miss Loco Chanelle, played on screen by Richard E.Grant. Also included will be the black dress Jamie Campbell actually wore when attending his high school prom (as featured in the original documentary Jamie: Drag

Queen at 16). Jamie’s money jar and high heeled shoes, as well as the ‘Jamie’ lights from one of the film’s iconic sequences, will also be on display. From 20-25 September, fan art from the Everybody’s Talking About Jamie Fan Club will be on display. The Fan Club have got together to share their stories - from when they first saw the original show at the Crucible Theatre, to the way the @ETAJamieFans twitter account was created and their excitement about the movie. Photographs and fan art will be showcased to chart Jamie’s journey from Sheffield to the West End and beyond. The final day of the display, Saturday 25th September, has some extra special involvement from those who

were part of the film. There will be dance performances from Sheffield Performing Arts, whose young people took part in the filming of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie as supporting artists. There will also be a special Q&A featuring Mark Herbert (joint CEO of Warp Films and one of the film’s producers) and some special guests, talking about the making of the film and the role Sheffield had to play in its creation and all things Jamie. For those wanting to make the most of Sheffield’s renowned nightlife, the following parties and cocktail-themed celebrations are taking place on Friday 17th, to coincide with the premiere: Showroom Cinema: “Into

the Spotlight” – a night of celebratory lip syncing and drag entertainment, hosted by Miss Cleo and Vivian Twist (The Funky Beavers), and Emma Maezin. Abbeydale Picture House: Following the very special Cinema For All screening taking place, there’s an afterparty at this iconic venue (which also was used as a location in the film) with a DJ set by Sarah Christie from Night Owls. The Great Gatsby: A party that strongly encourages drag. There’ll be live DJs, a Jamie themed cocktail menu, and it’s free entry from 10pm – 3am. Smoke: From Friday 17 onwards Smoke are doing a special Jamie inspired cocktail to keep those visiting the costume and prop display in the Winter Garden refreshed. It comprises Blue

Curacao, Wild Berry Gin and Cointreau, and is finished with a Raspberry and Lemon swirl garnish. The Old House: A whole menu of cocktails dedicated to and inspired by Jamie will be available from the Old House from 17 September. For more information and links head to bit.ly/ JamieInSheff, which also features details on how to be one of the lucky 96 who can gain access to the fan area on the red carpet, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority’s Cultural and Creative Industries summit and a blog written by Andro & Eve with details about the LGBTQ+ scene in Sheffield. #JamieSheff is being used on social channels for those wanting to keep up with the conversation of all the happenings in the city, and share their own experiences.

£10000 grant for local windrush film-makers Sheffield based African Diaspora Arts & Heritage organisation, Nyara School of Arts has been chosen to receive £10,000 of funding to deliver a cultural heritage project capturing and documenting the stories and memories of the Windrush Generation in Sheffield. Nyara were unanimously chosen by a panel of local African Caribbean community members, supported by Sheffield City Council officers, following a bidding process for the exciting cultural history project. The open invitation asked for expressions of interest to create an arts-based community project which would result in enhancing Sheffield City Archives Black History content, with a particular focus on Windrush memories. The bid by Nyara Arts Collective; Passing The Baton: The Legacy of the Windrush Pioneers, brings together members of Sheffield’s Caribbean community of different ages and with different experiences to produce a film and interviews for Sheffield Archives. The film will also be toured around different areas of Sheffield to take it back to the people who featured in it. The film will focus on the legacy of the Windrush generation in Sheffield and how they shaped the city by bringing pieces of the Caribbean to Sheffield in arts, culture, fashion, food and the ways in which they rebuilt post-war Britain. People across the Caribbean community will be interviewed, covering areas such as the establishment of the New Testmanent Church in Sheffield, famous blues bars and clubs, fashion and language and how this legacy has influenced arts and culture in Sheffield, across the North and wider Britain. As well as working with local rappers and artists of Caribbean heritage, the project will bring together local community members aged between 15 - 65+ to write a feature piece for the film and screenings during Black History Month, bridging the gap between the older and younger generation by connecting them through the arts. The panel said that Passing The Baton stood out because of its intergenerational work, creativity and fresh approach, emphasis on giving something back to the individuals and communities who participated in it, provision of training and payment to interns and the lasting product it would deliver for the archive and community groups. Councillor Abtisam Mohamed, Leadership Advisor for the Co-operative Executive on Poverty, Fairness and Equality at Sheffield City Council, said: “I’m thrilled to announce that Nyara Arts Collective has been awarded the funding to bring their Windrush memories project on to our screens and into our archives, telling the significant stories of our cultural history. Their bid was so full of creativity and understanding of how to represent our BAME communities and will unite young and

old together over their heritage. I’m so excited to see these important memories brought to life, creating a lasting record to be proud of for future generations. I’d like to thank all those who put forward expressions of interest, I’m sorry we can’t take them all forward, but it was fantastic to see so much passion from our BAME community groups. We’ll be sharing more details as the project progresses and can’t wait to celebrate the diversity and vibrancy that the Windrush Generation brought to our city so many years ago, during Black History Month.” After securing £5,000 from Windrush Grant funding, Sheffield City Council also contributed £5,000 in match funding. The contract was originally awarded to Ignite, who withdrew from the project following complaints that the organisation was not involved in the BAME community. Sheffield City Council acknowledged and apologised for the way the original contract had been awarded and formed a new panel of African Caribbean community members and organisations to put a more suitable application process and criteria in place and select an appropriate organisation to deliver the work.

Founded in 2016, the national day was created to show support for the almost 2 million people who work and volunteer for the British emergency services and to remember over 7,500 members of the emergency services who, over the last 200 years, have been killed in the line of duty. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years ofservice I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted, and is now a well-established business. In September 2017 I was offered the opportunity to join the team at Eric Eyre’s and to ‘move back home’, as I say, as I live local to both branches. It was, and still is, a fantastic opportunity for me to grow and develop an already friendly family run business and provide our local community with a warm and compassionate service.” Completing the team at High Green is John Walton, who has been with the company for over 20 years and Sharon Clayton who joined in July 2017, while Beverley Travis and Vera Gregory look after the branch at Sheffield Lane Top, which opened four years ago. “Our aim is to be there for our clients in every way that we can and make sure that their loved one is sent on their final journey exactly as they would have wanted. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.” If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service.

Sheffield based tech company, Tickets the eagles are landing! for Good, launch ‘the Ticket Fund’ From sold-out West End shows to gigs and festivals, Sheffield’s unique ticketdonation enterprise, Tickets For Good, have already sent thousands of NHS workers to the UK’s best events - for just the price of a coffee. Now their new campaign The Ticket Fund will bring businesses large and small together to fundraise for event tickets, which will be donated to hardworking NHS teams nationwide as thanks for their incredible work. The campaign also seeks to direct much-needed cash into the pockets of theatres, nightclubs and event promoters as they struggle to deal with the prolonged effects of COVID. The Ticket Fund is a campaign launched by Tickets for Good, a Sheffield-based ‘tech-forgood’ company that has gone from strength to strength since its launch in 2019. The pandemic has thrown up a huge number of challenges for the events industry but in keeping with the creative and innovative Sheffield mentality, Tickets for Good have responded with a campaign that aims to give back to those who have worked so hard during the pandemic. NHS staff can sign-up at the following link to register for free event tickets (https://ticketsforgood. org/nhs/). Whilst this campaign is initially aimed exclusively

at NHS staff, Tickets for Good are looking to expand the offer of free event tickets to many more frontline and key workers in the future. The ‘return to live’ in July 2021 brought a welcome taste of normality for venues, promoters and performers on the brink of collapse after months of closure and halfcapacity operating. However, as the longer-term impacts of the pandemic continue to trouble city centres, a cash injection for live events may be a crucial way to revitalise towns and cities. A 2018 Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee report showed that for every £10 spent on a ticket for a live music event, £17 is spent elsewhere in the local economy, meaning that every ticket taken up positively impacts the whole community. While it’s common for avid attendees to book multiple events, it’s vital that venues also secure new audiences to survive and thrive into the future. Through the Ticket Fund, they can showcase their events to key workers, whilst rewarding them with a great night out for free - a lifeline for venues that won’t cost them a penny. Via sponsorship, individual donations and business partnerships facilitated by the Ticket Fund, thousands of NHS workers can

also become regular attendees at city centre hotspots. The Ticket Fund has already secured a range of campaign supporters including WeGotTickets, whose generous customers have been raising money as they checkout to provide NHS workers with coveted tickets for major events. The team behind the Ticket Fund hope that in their hotspot locations of London, Yorkshire and Cambridge, local economies will feel a boost that ripples out nationwide. Their plan for success includes partnering with local authorities, BID (Business Improvement District) groups and private companies nationwide, to raise the funds for large-scale ticket donation to events around the UK. One attendee of a show supported by Tickets For Good commented, “Ordinarily I wouldn't have been able to afford attending the show. It was amazing...I had a great experience and recommended it to my friends.” The Ticket Fund aims to build on the positivity and buzz surrounding recent major collaborations, including sold-out West End shows and festivals, for the benefit of NHS workers and businesses nationwide. “In the last year we’ve seen that connecting our fantastic NHS with the UK’s worldleading cultural sector creates a

hugely beneficial partnership,” said Steve Rimmer, CEO of Tickets For Good. “The Ticket Fund is our way of bringing the expertise and support of many more businesses and organisations on board to give back to the NHS, whilst ensuring our live events industry thrives in the long term.” Tickets for Good are looking for funders to support the Ticket Fund campaign, businesses and organisations can explore partnership and sponsorship options via theticketfund.org. Meanwhile, individuals keen to contribute will find more updates on Tickets For Good’s website and social media soon.

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury blades hit posh for six MOORE POST PLYMOUTH United returned from the international break by hitting Peterborough for six of the best at Bramall Lane, as Slaviša Jokanović registered his first league success as Blades boss in emphatic style. Iliman Ndiaye bagged a brace on his full league debut, as did Ben Osborn with two second half right-footed efforts. Morgan Gibbs-White capped an impressive debut with a goal and an assist, with John Fleck also getting his name on the scoresheet after the break. For the home encounter against Darren Ferguson’s Posh, boss Jokanović made four changes, with Ndiaye and Gibbs-White making their full debut, whilst Robinson and Osborn were recalled. Olsen (quarantine), Berge (Covid related), Davies (minor injury) and McGoldrick (calf ) all missed out on inclusion in the matchday 18. United started positively, pushing Peterborough back in the opening exchanges and they were duly rewarded in the 14th minute. Robinson’s switch of play freed Gibbs-White, he cut back and kept his composure picking out NDIAYE who slotted the ball home

past a hapless Pym. Five minutes later, Osborn got the better of Ward, Sharp found space for a cross on the left side of the penalty area, but Ndiaye just couldn’t rise highest enough to head home a second. The visitors were literally at sixes and sevens at the back, Pym just about smothered the ball as Sharp looked to score, before Fleck went down with what appeared to be a strong claim for a penalty, but referee Martin waved the protests away. United continued to apply the pressure, whipping in a flurry of crosses which yielded a number of corners in quick succession. The Blades had dominated the opening 39 minutes, but a slip from Robinson allowed MARRIOTT a sight of goal and he powered clear before firing past Foderingham to restore parity against the run of play. Despite the unfortunate concession, United were soon back on the offensive though and Egan saw a header palmed out by Pym, before the ball fell kindly for Sharp, only for Kent to block his goal bound effort but somehow it was honours even at the break.

The second-half saw the visitors on the front foot, but Foderingham stood tall to deny Marriott and then Burrows in quick succession, before the latter was booked for diving in a bid to win a penalty in the eyes of referee Martin. But six minutes into the secondhalf United deservedly regained the lead, FLECK intercepted Kent’s pass out, combined with Sharp, before slotting past Pym with his right-foot in front of a delighted Kop. The goal had given the fans a timely boost and the noise hit another level on 53 minutes as Ndiaye freed Sharp, he got the better of Kent before crossing low to the near post where OSBORN

had got across Ward to replicate Fleck and finish with his right-foot. Ndiaye continued to impress, this time he created an opportunity for GibbsWhite, but this time Pym was equal to his effort to deny the Blades a fourth. United continued to pour forward and Sharp looked to have won a penalty as he was tugged back by Butler who was subsequently booked, only for the referee to award a free kick. With 22 minutes remaining, United made sure of the three points as GIBBSWHITE fired past Pym at his near post with Ndiaye this time claiming the assist. But NDIAYE wasn’t to be kept out of the action for too much longer as he

somehow managed to head home despite facing away from goal, with skipper Sharp supplying another excellent cross, as Hourihane and Freeman entered the fray, with Ndiaye lapping up the applause as he departed the scene. Gibbs-White was the next to receive a standing ovation, as he was replaced by McBurnie, but having won a soft penalty off Egan, CLARKE-HARRIS netted from the spot with 11 minutes remaining. The game was affectively over a contest despite the consolation goal and United put the icing on the cake with the last kick of the game as OSBORN added a sixth from McBurnie’s through ball.

Here are the key talking points from Darren Moore’s post-match press conference at Home Park following the Owls’ disappointing 3-0 defeat to Plymouth.

place you can do that is on the training ground, we are on a journey here, we are a new team and the more time we spend together as a team the better.

ON THE GAME It’s credit to Plymouth. They set up to get amongst us. The goals were uncharacteristic for us and more self-inflicted. We didn’t have the focus and the vision we had in recent weeks. The last one we were chasing the game because if we got one goal back I felt we could’ve gone on and got another. But they’ve hit us right at the end to make it 3-0. We’re going to get games like this through the season and we have to learn from them. We take the plaudits when we win games so we take our medicine tonight.

ON ABSENTEES I don’t really want to talk about the players that were not on the pitch, I prefer to talk about the players who were on the pitch. They are representing Sheffield Wednesday and we weren’t at our best today. But there are no excuses from me, we were beaten by the better team on the day. The long journey makes no difference, playing in the heat makes no difference. I’m a straightforward manager,

we will take our medicine and move on. ON THE FANS I don’t hide or shirk anything and we took over 2,000 fans down to Plymouth today and I said to the boys, you take the pats on the back and you take the medicine. We had to clap the fans and show our appreciation because they’ve travelled such a long way to support the team. We apologise to them that we couldn’t get the three points we wanted today. They will continue to support us through thick and thin and we are grateful for that. So irrespective of the result, we show our commitment to them.

ON BOUNCING BACK We get straight back to work on the training ground and get this game out of our systems. Of course, I am looking for the right response, that’s what the good teams do. From our perspective today we weren’t quite there. We will start putting those wrongs right for next week’s game against Shrewsbury. The only

Defender Ryan Galvin has extended his contract with Sheffield Wednesday until 2023. The 20-year-old is currently on loan with National League North side Gloucester City, where he signed a one-

Wellens ON SUFC Wigan defeat 2021/22

Guedioura signs A powerful, experienced and international midfielder has been added to United’s squad ahead of vital home fixture against Preston North End. Adlène Guedioura, well known to boss Slaviša Jokanović, has signed a one-year contract with the Blades after training at Shirecliffe for a number of weeks. He has completed his medical and is available for selection, subject to international clearance. Jokanović, who has twice managed Guedioura before, commented: “Adlène is someone I know really well. He has completed three weeks training with us and I believe he can bring something positive to the team. I have worked with him before; he knows many players here, playing against them and he knows the competition. He will be an important man in the dressing room.” Guedioura, 35, has earned 62 caps for Algeria and has experience of playing in four countries, he has represented Wolves, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Watford and Middlesbrough. French-born, he kicked off his professional career at Sedan, Noisy-le-Sec, L’Entente SSG and Creteil before a spell in Belgium with Kortrijk and Charleroi, where he came to the attention of Wolves manager Mick McCarthy. Between the Premier League and Championship, he has clocked up 218 appearances in English football before joining up with Jokanović in Qatar with Al-Gharafa. Upon competing formalities, Guedioura said: “I’m very pleased to have signed and I can’t wait to play for the team. It’s something special for me to come back to the UK, so I am really happy. I’d like to thank the manager and the club for allowing me to come to train and have the opportunity to show what I can do. I am really happy to end up with a contract now until the end of the season, so I am up for the challenge and ready to start.” Guedioura joins Robin Olsen, Morgan Gibbs-White, Conor Hourihane and Ben Davies as new faces at Bramall Lane this summer.

SWFC Hagan seals loan move Charles Hagan has signed on loan for National Conference South side Hampton & Richmond Borough. Hagan will stay with the Beavers until January. The former Chelsea striker extended his contract at Hillsborough over the summer after joining the Owls on a two-year scholarship in July 2018. Those two years were littered with success as Hagan was part of the Under-18 squad that posted a memorable league double, winning both the Northern and National Championship. Hagan scored in the National play-off final at Hillsborough as the Owls beat Cardiff 3-2. He posted his maiden first team appearance for Wednesday in the Carabao Cup against Fulham at Craven Cottage last season.

Richie Wellens spoke to the media after Rovers were beaten by Wigan Athletic in Sky Bet League One. Tommy Rowe’s opener was cancelled out by a double from Will Keane to secure a 2-1 win for the Latics. “We arrived with a game plan and tried to frustrate them when they had the ball.

Paul Warne reflects on the Millers heavy defeat at the New York Stadium over the weekend. “I didn’t think we were at our best today, for whatever reason. Our press wasn’t athletic enough and I felt like we didn’t move the ball quick enough. “I wasn’t pleased at half time and I told the lads at half time that I didn’t think they were playing at their best. “The lads have been excellent so far, but today was our worst performance of the season. “I think in terms of chances, we created enough to win the game, sometimes you can play poorly and win but it wasn’t to be. “Today, we have to give the opposition credit and move on to Tuesday.”

“I felt we’d done that well and went 1-0 up, but then they scored from a free-kick which I felt shouldn’t have been one. “We probably didn’t do enough to get back in it after going 2-1 down, but we were asking players to do more minutes than they were ready for.” “We’ve worked on a little bit but we had Galbraith and Dahlberg joining us late in the week, we’ve got a full week now to prepare for Morecambe. “The players understand where we’re at and I’m proud of them for continuing to plug away. “We could have easily lost confidence after the second goal and let it go to three or four but we didn’t do that.”

nothing despite the hard work we put in. “We needed to keep the lead longer after scoring, their biggest threat came from set pieces and we made it too easy for them. “We spoke at half-time about doing the things that got us ahead and continuing to work to the game-plan.” “It’s a difficult start with a lot of injuries, I’ve had a few different partners which makes it difficult. “Joseph came in and played well, I enjoyed being alongside him and you can see his potential. “I’ve been around the league for a while so I’ll do what I can to help him learn about the level.”

Cooper completes Darlington loan switch

Young defender Jake Cooper has joined Vanarama National League side Darlington on loan until 1st January. Cooper – a graduate of the Millers Academy – enjoyed loan spells with Gateshead and Hartlepool United last term and returns to the North East with Darlo for the remainder of 2021. Due to loan regulations outside of the transfer window, Jake will be unavailable for Rotherham United’s Papa John’s Trophy and Central League Cup fixtures.
