REGIONAL MAYOR TO STAND DOWN NEXT YEAR Dan Jarvis announces that he won’t contest the May 2022 Mayoral election. In a statement he said: “It’s an extraordinary privilege to serve as the first South Yorkshire Mayor. I’m very proud of all we have achieved, not least because I’m the only Mayor who inherited a situation where the powers and the money weren’t already in place. Amidst the challenge, we’ve also faced Britain’s departure from the EU, terrible flooding and the biggest health crisis in living memory. “Despite the relentless pressures, we’ve succeeded in establishing a properly
functioning Mayoral Combined Authority that’s been able to unlock hundreds of millions of pounds of investment, that will protect and create thousands of jobs; deliver huge investment in our public transport system; get us on track to be carbon net zero by 2040 at the latest; and much, much more besides. “I ran for Mayor because I thought delivering a devolution deal for our region was the most important thing I could achieve from opposition. When I first stepped forward to take on the role, I took
the decision to remain as a Member of Parliament. Some people didn’t agree with that, but I said from the beginning that it wasn’t a long-term arrangement. And I meant it. “I honestly don’t believe we would have made the progress we have, and we certainly wouldn’t have got the devolution deal over the line if I had not stayed in Westminster. The settlement we negotiated helped take us through the worst of the pandemic and is really starting to deliver for people in South Yorkshire. “We now need someone to build on our achievements
and drive us forward over the next four years. That person will not be me. I won’t be standing as Mayor again next May but in the meantime, I will continue to give 110% to the role. “There’s still an awful lot I want to get done and I’ll be working hard to get us in the best possible shape for the future. I’m letting people know my intentions now because I think it’s important that potential candidates are given sufficient notice to step forward. South Yorkshire deserves someone of the highest calibre as their next Mayor, who can provide the leadership required.

Get your tickets for the Bears Farewell! Meadowhall, one of the key sponsors of the Bears of Sheffield trail, has revealed it will be hosting the ‘farewell event’ for the trail in October. The Bears of Sheffield is a trail of 61 big bears and 100 little bears which have been dotted around the city for the public to find over the summer. The event has been organised by The Children’s Hospital Charity to help raise money for a new Cancer and Leukaemia Ward at Sheffield Children’s through donations, merchandise and sponsorship. From Thursday 14 October until Sunday 17 October, all 61 big bears will be together for the last time before they are auctioned
off to the highest bidder to raise money for the charity. The farewell event will give the public the opportunity to get a final look at all the bears they didn’t manage to visit during the trail – which will end on Wednesday 29 September. Tickets for the event are available to buy online now and will support the overall fundraising total. Prices are £5 for adults, £2 for children (aged 3-15yrs – under 3’s can go free) or £12 for a family (two adults, two children). As well as being a key sponsor of the city-wide initiative, Meadowhall is also currently home to seven bears on the trail, including Dancing Bear, Flora, Pieces, Ted, Willow,

When I turned 16, my dad told me it was time to get a job. “When I was your age, my very first job I had I worked with over 500 people under me.”... “Wow,” I asked. “Did you work in some big corporation?” “No!” He said, “I mowed the lawn in a cemetery.”

News, Information and Advice smokefree campaign free music lessons Smokefree Sheffield has today launched a new campaign to encourage people to make their on offer for all! homes smokefree. It comes after lockdown led to an increase in secondhand exposure at home, specifically in households with children. An animation has been created to highlight the dangers of secondhand smoke. Told from the perspective of a child, it shows how tobacco smoke can move around the home and affect the whole family. Demonstrating that there’s no safe way to smoke inside, smokers are encouraged to get support to quit or to make sure they take smoking right outside. Sadly, lockdown has left even more children exposed to the dangers of SHS with people generally spending more time inside their homes than ever before. Research has shown that households that include children are 50% more likely to report being exposed to SHS since lockdown compared to those without children. And a further 12% of smokers who live with children report they are smoking indoors more than they did before lockdown. On top of this, the onset of winter is also likely to increase people’s exposure to SHS with the cold weather making it even less convenient for smokers to go outside to smoke. Regularly breathing in secondhand smoke can cause the same health problems as smoking. It is one of the leading causes of poor respiratory health in children and exposure significantly increases the risk of stroke, heart disease and lung cancer in adults. Alison Teal said: “Most people know the dangers of secondhand smoke and try to do what they can to prevent it in their home. However, it’s trickier than people think as 80% of secondhand smoke is invisible, odourless and the microscopic particles are impossible to control. Steps like opening a window, smoking by the back door or smoking in another room don’t actually stop secondhand smoke spreading around the home. The only reliable way to protect others is to never smoke inside the home.” Greg Fell, Director of Public Health Sheffield said: “It’s worrying that lockdown has led to more people being exposed to secondhand smoke. We know most smokers want to quit and that this is the best way to protect others from secondhand smoke, so it’s vital that they get the support they need. With Stoptober just around the corner I want to urge smokers in Sheffield who want to quit to get in touch with their local stop smoking service. For those who aren’t quite ready yet, there are still positive steps they can take, like using other sources of nicotine, such as patches, gum or e-cigarettes when cravings strike, or making sure they smoke right outside.”

‘Learn to Play’ is back on Saturday 25th September and offers free music taster sessions to encourage new and lapsed music makers to experience the joys and benefits of making music. The initiative, by the charity Music for All, will take place at Sheffield Guitar Studio and will offer free 10-15 minute music lessons. A number of tutorials will also be available to subscribers of Music for All’s YouTube channel from the 25th September. These will feature the likes of the band Skunk Anansie, David Tench the musical director of The Voice UK, jazz multi-instrumentalist Orphy Robinson, and more. By offering free music lessons at venues across the county, in person or, for the first time, online, allows all ages and abilities to gain easy access to a wide range of musical instruments and fulfil their dreams of learning to play an instrument. Some of Music for All Ambassadors and supporters include Ace from Skunk Anansie, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Jools Holland, Chi-chi Nwanoku and Jamie Cullum, Learn to Play ’21 has been growing in popularity. A record 10,000 people picked up and played a musical instrument during the last event in 2019. Jools Holland commented, “Making music is very important to me. It’s my work, my pleasure, my friend, companion and therapist. The charity Music for All believes passionately in the unique power of music to change lives, and that’s why it runs Learn to Play, which last time provided over 10,000 free introductory lessons in 120 venues across the UK. So, if you’re a budding or lapsed musician, or you’d like to be a venue that holds a Learn to Play event on September 25th and 26th, please visit the Music for All website and sign up. Thank you.” Tony Followell, Chair of Trustees at Music for All, said: “Being able to offer free music taster sessions to everyone is so very important. People may not have had the opportunity to pick up an instrument in the past and experience what joy can be found in making music. We encourage the people of South Yorkshire to book their places today to discover what could be a new hobby or even career. Spaces are booking up fast so act now to avoid disappointment. We look forward to meeting and teaching as many people as possible.” Learn to Play ’21 is generously supported by the NAMM Foundation and partners include Music Industries Association, Musicians Union, Making Music and Music Mark. council faces budget challenges
Sheffield City Council is preparing for a challenging financial position following the enormous demands placed on services during the Covid pandemic but remains ambitious for the city’s future. The authority is currently predicting an overspend of around £44million from 2021/22, caused by continuing additional spending on Council services in response to the pandemic, such as support for families and older people in need, and the expected end of Covid-related funding from the Government. Covid19 continues to place unprecedented demands on health and social care services. Throughout the pandemic, the council has not hesitated to meet the needs of Sheffield’s communities, but now faces a challenge like never before to achieve a balanced financial position for the coming year. The Government is currently conducting a comprehensive spending review, but it is not clear what this review will mean for Sheffield, and details are not expected until early December, at which point it will be too late to manage the situation. Despite last week’s announcement from Government of additional health and social care investment, it is not expected that this money will be allocated locally, or that councils will be sufficiently compensated for the spiralling costs they have faced in the last 18 months. Sheffield City Council acknowledges that it must take action now in order to plan and prepare for the difficult time ahead. The 2021/22 budget predicts an overspend of £44million, and schemes such as Voluntary Early Retirement (VER) and Voluntary Severance (VS) are already underway to look at ways to reduce spend this year, with the hope to achieve a more manageable starting point for the coming year. Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “We have faced challenges in the last 18 months like we’ve never seen before, and it’s not over because we’ve now got the financial consequences to deal with and the ongoing needs of our residents. I’ve raised this before and I’ll continue to raise this as an issue – over the past decade we have faced cuts to our budget, and since 2010/11, Sheffield has had its spending power reduced by £215m (31%) – the equivalent of £383 for every Sheffield resident. This is above average for the rest of England. It’s hard-working people who continue to shoulder this shortfall of funding. Enough is enough, the Government has to take responsibility. Without more details from the Government about how we’ll be supported it’s a very uncertain position for us to be in. That’s why we can’t wait. We’re doing everything we can now to reduce our overspend, prepare for the year ahead and limit the impact on the services people rely on. Changes and compromises will have to be made, but we will keep putting our residents and this city first, and make sure essential services are prioritised. On top of that, we remain ambitious for the future of this city. We’ve committed to our One Year Plan, which will lay the

We’ll be sharing more information with local people about our plans and options as soon as possible and I want people to play their part and help us in making Sheffield the best it can be. Local Area Committee Meetings started this month, and these are all about you, so please get involved.” Further details relating to Sheffield’s budget for 2021/22 and 2022/23 will be discussed during Sheffield’s Cooperative Executive meeting next week. The supporting documents are available to read online on the Sheffield City Council website.
booster vaccines
A statement has been made by Deputy Leader of Sheffield City Council, Councillor Julie Grocutt in relation to Covid-19 booster jabs. Councillor Julie Grocutt said, “It’s really welcome news that boosters are to be delivered – vaccination is our best way of protecting ourselves and others from coronavirus, which is still a real threat. We’re encouraging everyone who can to get the vaccine, whether it’s the booster, or your first or second dose. The vaccine rollout in Sheffield has been hugely successful so far and partners across the city have been working tirelessly. That work isn’t over, there are still people who are not vaccinated at all. We know that frontline clinical staff are absolutely exhausted, that the NHS is under real pressure already, and that they are facing one of the most challenging winters in their history. Those workers who have put their all into supporting the fight against covid now need proper support from the government – clear and timely information on the booster rollout, implementation plans, and funding. Major announcements like this can’t be dropped on them at the last minute, they need to be able to prepare, for the wellbeing of clinical staff and for our communities. We are still in a major pandemic and staff are being asked to provide one of the biggest mobilisations in NHS history. We want to thank all those in Sheffield who have been working on the response to Covid-19 – medics, care workers, key workers and vital voluntary and community groups. We also want to thank residents who have continued to be mindful of others and take precautions to help stop the spread of coronavirus. Your actions are saving lives.”

Activities and events galore at Doncaster’s Age Friendly Festival ‘Making Doncaster a Better Place in which to Age’ Doncaster’s first Age Friendly Festival launches on Wednesday 29 September with a week-long action packed programme of activities and events happening across the borough. Doncaster Council, Doncaster CCG and Age UK Doncaster together with a host of local organisations, businesses, voluntary and community groups have joined forces for the Festival to highlight the wide range of services and activities to support people to age well and live healthy and active later lives in Doncaster. With lots happening every day from Wednesday 29 September to Wednesday 6 October, there will be something to suit everyone. This includes an opportunity to find out how you can contribute to your communities, the wide range of leisure pursuits there are in Doncaster, how you can get easy access to quality health and care services, the variety of groups to pursue interests and meet others and much, much more. The NHS health bus will also be hitting the road during the week stopping off at venues across the borough to bring an age friendly information service for local people. There will also be opportunity for people to give their views on ageing well in Doncaster by completing a short survey. Councillor Andrea Robinson, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said: “Together with our
Team Doncaster partners, we are committed to ensuring that Doncaster is an Age Friendly Community where people can get involved in local life, have lots of opportunities to stay fit and healthy, socialise, feel safe and comfortable in their local area and enjoy life to the full.” Councillor Rachael Blake, Cabinet Member for Communities and Equalities, said: “The festival is a celebration of all the great services and groups there are across the borough to support people to age well and live healthy later lives, with lots happening every day of the week to suit various interests from sport, leisure, social groups, history, music to name but a few. Not only this, there will be plenty of information and advice on health and care services and living well in the borough. “Everyone is welcome to join the fun – the more, the merrier so please come and join us at venues across the borough as part of this very special week.” For more information about all the events, activities and dates and times for the health bus please visit www.doncaster.gov.uk/News When attending the events, please keep Covid safety in mind for yourself and others. Practice good hand hygiene, keep distance wherever possible and if you feel ill, stay at home and book a test straight away.

Wapentake DJ legend helps unveil iconic piece of art When a new artwork was being publicly unveiled to celebrate one of Sheffield’s most iconic rock bars there really was only one man worthy of doing the honours. DJ Ken Hall – a man synonymous with the Wapentake bar – gave the limited edition print the thumbs up at a special night to mark the enduring legacy of the venue that shut in the late 1990s. The Wapentake print – painted by local artist Alan Pennington and commissioned by the citybased Dirty Stop Outs – includes legendary landlady Olga Marshall and a poster for Def Leppard, the Sheffield stars that played one of their earliest shows at the venue but also returned at the height of their fame in 1995. Scores of regulars provided
memories of the cellar bar to help the artist re-imagine the venue. The Wapentake bar was sited under Sheffield’s Grosvenor House Hotel from the early 1970s right up to the late 1990s when it closed. It was also the subject of the recently released ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Sheffield – Wapentake Edition’ book. Dirty Stop Outs’ Neil Anderson
said: “The Wapentake played a massive part in the lives of thousands of people in the city over the years – including my own. We were looking at ways to celebrate its legacy and a piece of art that helped tell its story seemed an obvious route.” The print is available exclusively from www.dirtystopouts.com
LIVE EVENTS AT THE PARAMOUNT
Free music lessons coming to ShEFFIELD this Saturday
‘Learn to Play’ is back on Saturday 25th September and offers free music taster sessions to encourage new and lapsed music makers to experience the joys and benefits of making music. The initiative, by the charity Music for All, will take place at Sheffield Guitar Studio (Chapeltown Road, Ecclesfield) and will offer free 10-15 minute music lessons.
So, if you’re
a budding or lapsed musician, or you’d like to be a venue that holds a Learn to Play event on September 25th and 26th, please visit the Music for All website and sign up. Thank you.” Tony Followell, Chair of Trustees at Music for All, said: “Being able to offer free music taster sessions to everyone is so very important. People may not have had the opportunity to pick up an instrument in the past and experience what joy can be found in making music. “We encourage the people of South Yorkshire to book their places today to discover what could be a new hobby or even career. Spaces are booking up fast so act now to avoid disappointment. We look forward to meeting and teaching as many people as possible.” For more information visit www.facebook.com/ sheffieldguitarstudio

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury BLADES EASE TO FIRST AWAY WIN MOORE POST-SHREWS John Egan was at the double as United comfortably secured a first away win of the season at the MKM Stadium on Saturday lunchtime. Billy Sharp got the ball rolling with an early header with Morgan Gibbs-White claiming the assist and although the skipper missed from the penalty spot before the break Egan headed home twice from pinpoint corners from Conor Hourihane to ensure Keane Lewis-Potter’s late effort was nothing more than a consolation for the Tigers. Boss Jokanović made four changes for the clash on Humberside, with Berge, Davies, Osborn all earning recalls, as Hourihane was handed his first start. Although Berge was then replaced by Brewster come kick-off following an injury sustained by the Norwegian in the warmup as Guedioura was added to the bench. The opening ten minutes were scrappy, but arguably it was the home side who enjoyed the better of it despite United enjoying fractional more of the ball. But on 17 minutes, some real quality fashioned United’s first real chance and it wasn’t a surprise who made the
telling finish. Fleck and Baldock were involved in the build-up, but it was Gibbs-White who found space and produced a perfect cross from the right and SHARP was unmarked in between two defenders to head home past Ingram. Hull looked to mount a comeback, but just after the half hour, United played out from the back, Fleck burst forward and created a chance for Gibbs-White, the Wolves loanee drove hard and low but Ingram saved at the expense of a corner, from which referee Whitestone spotted a foul by Sharp. Olsen’s first meaningful work of the contest saw him comfortably deny Smallwood from fully 30 yards out. The Blades were now controlling the game, Gibbs-White passed up the opportunity to take aim, but Brewster didn’t, although his effort was gathered by Ingram. At the other end, with five minutes to go until the break, Hull’s best chance came and went, as Bernard headed wide at the back post from Moncur’s deep corner from the left. Moments before the break, United missed a golden chance to double
their lead. Sharp beat the offside trap and advanced through on goal before Greaves lunged in from behind to commit a foul before making contact with the ball. Surprisingly, the retreating defender was only shown a yellow despite being the last man and from the spot, the skipper was denied by Ingram who saved low to his right. Within minutes of his introduction at the break, Honeyman was cautioned for a robust challenge on Osborn and in the 50th minute United deservedly scored a second goal as EGAN saw off the attentions of Wilks before heading home from Hourihane’s inswinging corner from the right. Norrington-Davies was carded for a foul on Honeyman who had stolen possession in United’s defensive third and Moncur’s free-kick was headed behind by Sharp and thankfully the resulting corner was dealt with by Davies as Olsen then comfortably denied Coyle from distance. The cards continued to come like it was Christmas, this time Smallwood saw yellow for cynically halting the progress of Brewster. The hour was in sight as Gibbs-White took aim
from distance on his weaker foot, but Ingram just about clawed it over the bar and from the subsequent right-wing corner, EGAN once again broke free of Wilks, this time heading home at the near post with Hourihane bagging another assist with another pinpoint delivery. Guedioura was introduced with 25 minutes remaining, with Hourihane the one to make way in the Blades engine room and the Algerian was the next player to be booked within seconds of joining the action. From absolutely nowhere, Hull then pulled a goal back in the 74th minute. The home side won the ball
OWLS PAY TRIBUTE TO TONY TOMS
Sheffield Wednesday are saddened to learn of the passing of our former trainer and coach Tony Toms, aged 76. Tony was with the Owls in the mid-1970s/early 1980s, introducing
training drills that would become legendary in S6. A fitness fanatic from an early age, Tony signed up for the Royal Marine Commandos aged just 18 and taught canoeing, cliff-climbing and
gymnastics around the world. Tony was in the army for some 14 years before Len Ashurst, then manager at Hartlepool, offered him the position of trainer/coach after a successful trial period.

high up the pitch and from Smith’s low cross, LEWISPOTTER smashed home at the back post despite pressure from Baldock. Former Blades youngster Smith then had the ball in the net, but thankfully the assistant referee had already flagged for offside. United’s final change saw Davies exit the contest with Basham replacing him and Brewster tried his luck from distance having been given time but again Ingram saved, but it mattered not as the Blades comfortably saw out the remaining moments, including added time, to make it four games unbeaten and seven points from the last nine on offer.Norwood, Bogle, Ndiaye.
The players responded remarkably and clawed their way from relegation danger. The duo enjoyed three years at Hartlepool before moving south to take up similar positions with Gillingham. Two seasons passed before Hillsborough came calling, where Tony spent years working firstly alongside Ashurst and then the late, great Jack Charlton. Tony was the architect behind the team famously camping overnight on Broomhead Moors near
Darren Moore spoke to the media following Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury at Hillsborough and here are the key talking points. ON THE GAME It was a game of two halves really – first half we were absolutely blistering at times, second half we just kind of went away from the gameplan and that’s something I will have to analyse over the weekend. There were big moments in the game – if Saido scores his second chance, if Baz scores the penalty, and then we had a clear goal disallowed in the second half. I thought it was onside straight away because Mide has come from behind his marker and then I got the message from the analysts that it’s onside. You can always tell with the reaction of the defenders and I think they knew it was onside. It’s a shame, it’s frustrating but these things happen in football. Sometimes these decisions go for you, sometimes they go against you and it’s gone against us today. Should we have won the game? Yes. We were dominant and we did we didn’t get the big decision. So it’s frustrating but we have a point and

it stopped that run of consecutive defeats and we build on that and move on. ON SAIDO BERAHINO You want your attacking players on the scoresheet and Saido can score goals, he’s done it all his career. That was a typical Saido goal, a poacher’s goal and I thought he was unlucky with the second one, he’s got good contact on it but it’s just gone the wrong side of the post. He cramped up towards the end so we have to keep chipping away at him and get volume into his game.
momentum we showed in the first half. Our home form is good, we are unbeaten here in the league and now we have to build on what we have. We are on a journey but there will be times when there will be bumps in the road. The only way to get better is through hard work and that’s what we will do. I saw a lot of positives today but obviously they are overshadowed by the result. It’s turned into a frustrating afternoon when it promised so much.
ON MOVING FORWARD In terms of getting this place jumping again we have to build on the
ON SUBSTITUTIONS I didn’t want to take the three players off the pitch and they didn’t want to come off but they all had little niggles, nothing serious, but enough to come off. Saido cramped up a little and we will manage his situation. The more minutes he gets into his legs the better and better he will be. With Dennis and Mide, again it was just minor and muscular and hopefully the three of them will be fine for Monday. With George Byers, he got a knock in training that ruled him out today but again nothing serious. With Patto and Jaden, I made those decisions because we have a strong squad and there are only so many shirts.
2-0 in our next game after 11 without a win. Our thoughts are with
Tony’s family and friends at this difficult time.
ON THE PENALTY With the momentum we had, if the penalty goes in, I think they might have crumbled because we were so dominant. I said to the players when you have adversity you come together and you move on. Is Barry still my penalty taker? 100%. He lives and breathes this football club and there’s no one more disappointed than him right now. I feel for him, I really do, because it was a sublime pass to Mide for the second goal and it was incorrectly ruled offside.

Lucy Watson reflects on season’s start United Women forward Lucy Watson has enjoyed almost the perfect start to her second full season at the club. The 17-year-old has been influential in both of the team’s wins so far this season, scoring a stunning opener against Durham three weeks ago before adding to her tally with the opener at Coventry United last time out, as well as assisting another for strike partner Courtney SweetmanKirk. The teenager returns to the club this week off the back of her second England under 19s camp as Neil Redfearn prepares his side for the visit of Watford to the Technique Stadium this week, and Watson is delighted with how her season has started for both her personally and the team. “It doesn’t get much better,” she said. “I was buzzing to get another goal and to help Courtz get her brace. Our link up has been really good so far this season and hopefully that carries on and improves further throughout the rest of the season.” The Blades were beaten on the opening day by Blackburn Rovers but have bounced back to beat two tough opponents and sit second in the FA Women’s Championship table heading into their return to action post-international break against Watford this weekend. With two good performances and deserved wins behind them now, Watson believes it is the springboard the team needs to continue progressing as the season approaches a busy period with the Continental League Cup also set to kick off early next month. “It’s been really good in training. The opening day defeat wasn’t ideal but I think we’ve bounced back from it really well and I think now the only way is up and we’ll keep pushing on and keep improving our performances.” Watson’s superb free-kick against Durham was United’s first goal of the season and set the tone for an impressive 3-1 win against last season’s runners-up in the team’s last home game. The forward found the top corner from all of 25 yards just seven minutes into the encounter, but couldn’t enjoy it for too long as the 17-year-old was back in college the next day, and her classmates had plenty to say on her strike. “I didn’t actually milk it, but everyone came up to me saying it was a cross or it was bad keeping, so I just had to tell them I was absolutely going for it! “I didn’t actually think it would go in that top corner when I hit it! It is quite weird going in the day after you’ve been playing but I quite like college and I’m surrounded by good people there. I do get ripped into by people obviously, but if I keep scoring I don’t think that will happen!” Watson’s stature within the team is growing game by game and she has now became a regular starter, playing all three of the team’s games so far this season from the off after being a regular off the bench last season. Knowing Watson was capable of leading the line this season and replacing the outgoing golden boot winner Katie Wilkinson, Redfearn offered the teenager the number 9 shirt vacated by the club’s former striker and top scorer. “It gave me a lot of confidence when Redders asked me and obviously I wasn’t going to turn that down, but I knew by taking it I would have to prove myself and I think starting off this season that’s what I want to do. I want to keep pushing on with my performances and if I do that the goals will come along with it. “A few days before it was announced I was staying he told me he wanted me to be the number 9 and I was like ‘oh...yeah I’ll do that!’ but I am really happy to have been given it.” At 17, Watson has her whole career ahead of her but is already making an impact in the most competitive looking FA Women’s Championship season yet, joint leading the club scoring charts with attacking partners SweetmanKirk and Jess Clarke after three games. After playing largely a squad role last season, Watson knows minutes are important for her development and she’s keen to push on and continue to develop throughout the rest of what will be a busy campaign. “The main thing about this season for me was getting minutes and as I’ve said the performances and goals will hopefully come off the back of that. “It’s a really good league this season and I just want to push on and hopefully make a name for myself this season.” United Women are back in action at home to Watford at the Technique Stadium on Sunday 26th September, 2pm.

Both teams had opportunities in a pulsating first half at University of Bolton Stadium, but it was the Millers who were more clinical, as they went in two to the good at the break thanks to a brace from Ben Wiles. Warne’s side saw out the result with a professional job in the second half, something which pleased the manager. “I’m really pleased, I’d like to thank the away following, who were fantastic for us, Warne told www.themillers. co.uk. “There were 21,000 in there today, which is a great crowd for third tier football, but we stood up to the challenge well. “A clean sheet away from home and a couple of goals is a very satisfying day at the office for us. We could have scored more, but so could they. Overall, we’re delighted with the result. “It’s not something that comes natural for us to sit back, but we were fatigued after a big effort the other night. “We left it 3 v 3 on the halfway line, but that was causing problems, so we decided to move the engagement line back and just let the centre halves have it and press from there.
Wiles lands PA Entertainments Man of the Match award after Bolton brace Following such an accomplished performance away at one of the league’s early pacesetters, virtually everyone in the team came away with supporters singing their praises. There was one name however, on everyone’s lips. Ben Wiles. Having been reinstated to the side after starting from the bench in the midweek fixture against Lincoln City,

the Academy graduate was in fine form at University of Bolton Stadium. The Rawmarsh midfielder opened the scoring with 18 minutes on the clock. Taking aim from the edge of the penalty area and firing a rocket past Wanderers’ stopper Joel Dixon. Three minutes later and his name was up in lights again, scoring with a downward header from Dan Barlaser’s corner. On another day, he could have taken the matchball home with him after being a whisker away from turning home Chiedozie Ogbene’s low cross nine minutes before the break. His goals, as well as his all-round display in the centre of the pitch, saw him earn the supporters vote ahead of Ollie Rathbone, Richard Wood and Rarmani Edmonds-Green.

“All in all, it was a very professional performance from us, to come away with a 2-0 win is great.” The Millers have bounced back well since a disappointing defeat to Fleetwood last week, taking four points from two tough away assignments. And the manager was pleased to see his side finally getting the points their performances have merited. “It’s always about the players, it’s not about us. Apart from a blip against Fleetwood the players have been excellent. We were unfortunate to lose against Wigan and Wednesday and should have won in midweek. “That’s the thing with football, you can be the better team, but sometimes you don’t get what you deserve. “I’m really pleased with their efforts. To say we played midweek and they didn’t is a phenomenal effort from us, against a very good team by the way.” “Four points is a really good return for us from two really tough away games. I’m pleased.”
Richie Wellens spoke to the media to give his assessment of the 1-0 win over Morecambe in Sky Bet League One. Tommy Rowe’s late header secured the manager’s first league victory in charge at the Keepmoat Stadium. “I thought for the first 15 minutes we were very good, and then for the next half-an-hour we lacked energy and it became a struggle. “Second-half before the goal we were the best team, and once we went ahead we just had to protect what we had. “We’ve worked all week and looked really good, we didn’t have as much possession as we would have liked but we wanted to attack with intent.” “We’ve won a football match because we did the basics well, it wasn’t pretty at times but the win gives us confidence. “We’ve had two cleared off the line and a couple of good openings, but the final bit let us down. “I love seeing footballers develop and it’s great to see them working hard to win a game. “We’ll come in on Monday morning and continue to work on the basics, as that’s what gets you results.”
Tommy Rowe spoke to the media after scoring the winner against Morecambe in Sky Bet League One. The 32-year-old popped up nine minutes from time to head home Ben Close’s corner and secure Rovers’ first victory of the campaign. “We’re delighted to get the win, it’s something that has been on our minds for the last few weeks. “Our performance wasn’t brilliant but sometimes you just have to grind out a result and we did that. “Football doesn’t always go the way you want it to and we’ve not had the best start but we’ve kept working and got our rewards.” “We know the quality Ben Close has from set-pieces and we’ve worked on getting in good areas. “The ball was right and I timed my run well, once I was in the position I backed myself to score. “Paul Gerrard spent a lot of time with us in attacking and defensive set-pieces so he deserves a lot of credit.”
