CITY tops charts for outdoor spaces Sheffield has lived up to its reputation as an Outdoor City filled with culture, the Thriving Places Index (TPI) has found. The TPI identifies the local conditions for wellbeing, and measures whether those conditions are being delivered fairly and substantially across England. This year’s results saw Sheffield come out on top for local environment, achieving the highest rating of all the Core Cities in England. To calculate the score, the TPI looked at various factors
including the number of private outdoor spaces, the average distance to parks and residents’ exposure to transport noise. Culture was also shown to be a key element of Sheffield life. The category looks at how many heritage sites, museums, parks, and gardens there are and how often people visit them. In measuring equality, income and ethnicity scored highly in Sheffield closely followed by health, but the data also highlighted some improvements which
need to be made in social mobility and the gender pay gap. Sheffield scored highly for transport, which analysed the number of people walking or cycling, car traffic levels and the time it takes to get to key services, such as school, shops, and the GP, on public transport. There were also elements which require improvement such as jobs and business. The data analysed several factors including employment levels, the number of local businesses as well as the percentage of people with low income.
Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of the Council, said: “It is fantastic to see our amazing city still thriving in numerous areas despite the struggles residents and businesses faced as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. “Us Sheffielders are proud of our outdoor spaces and our heritage, and it is fantastic to see that reflected in the Thriving Places Index. I’m so proud to see, despite all the setbacks during the pandemic, we are also still sticking to our sustainability commitments and
tackling several areas of inequality. “We still have some way to go and as a council we know there are improvements which need to be made, which is why we have set out a series of ambitious aims for the One Year Plan and continue to strive for the best for our city in the future.” Sheffield’s Thriving Places Index report is available here https://www. thrivingplacesindex.org/

BACK TO LIVE - CITY’S VENUES SEE HEALTHY RETURN 37 shows and over 66,000 customers in the first month of opening as Live Entertainment returns to the Utilita Arena Sheffield & Sheffield City Hall The Arena, along with its sister venue Sheffield City Hall got off to a flying start as the venues re-opened in September with the big name shows and audiences making a safe return as entertainment finally returned to the city’s venues. It was announced in August that the historic entertainment sites would re-open and with 37 shows watched by over 66,000 customers across the two venues fans are once again enjoying the wide variety of live entertainment the venues have to offer.
With a recent recruitment drive hiring hundreds of new staff, Sheffield City Hall and the Arena have been able to move to the next phase of a return to normality now that organized indoor events and mass gatherings have been able to reopen and return. September highlights included sell-out shows from hometown bands Heaven 17, Bring Me the Horizon and the Heavily Pregnant Brothers, local ice hockey team Sheffield Steelers and Toby Foster’s Last Laugh Comedy Club as well as Gerry Cinnamon, Paloma Faith & A Question of Sport Live. There are many thrilling upcoming concerts, musical shows and comedy stars
announcing shows daily as customers make a welcome return of live entertainment to the city.
Dom Stokes, Head of Live Events and Venues and Sheffield City Trust said: “It has been hard work for everyone involved with significant challenges. However, thanks to the herculean efforts of our team and the continued cooperation of all the customers visiting both sites, the Sheffield City Trust have been able to enter a whole new phase and make a return to doing what we do best, providing entertainment to thousands of people! “Everyone understands both venues contribute a huge amount to the cities
culture and economic development and will continue to be the backdrop to many special and memorable nights. “Customers are rightly cautious but are keen
to return to our venues and we are making every effort to keep everyone safe and are delighted to report shows are running smoothly and have seen an incredible uptake.
Following a successful opening month October will see nearly 100,000 customers expected across 40 events confirming the appetite for live entertainment and events is greater than ever.”

USEFUL NUMBERS
News, Information and Advice
donate your plasma! breast cancer support family business NHS adverts are going live because there are not enough people donating plasma. Plasma is used to make lifesaving medicines but the Barnsley donor centre in Dodworth is only around 53% full each day. The adverts, across social media and public places, will be part of a sustained campaign to drive up donor numbers over the next six months. The NHS relies on imported plasma medicines however global supplies are under long standing pressure due to rising demand. The pressure has increased due to coronavirus affecting donation in the USA. NHS Blood and Transplant started taking donations this year to bolster long term UK supplies but the number of donors is far behind target. Plasma donation is new and research shows only two in ten people know about it. Awareness is low because plasma donation restarted in April after a break of more than 20 years. Plasma is used to make medicines full of donor antibodies which fight bacterial and viral infections. This medicine, known as immunoglobulin, is used to strengthen or stabilise the immune systems of people with rare, lifethreatening diseases. Around 560 people in the South Yorkshire region received immunoglobulins last year. Millie Glaves, Barnsley Plasma Donor Centre Manager, said: “Plasma is a powerful, lifesaving part of your blood, which can be used to make unique, lifesaving medicines. Since donation restarted we’ve had many fantastic people come in to donate but we still see too many empty chairs every day. We need your help. In the next few months, we need thousands more people to start donating at our donor centre. Plasma donation is safe and easy, it doesn’t take long, and you will help save and improve the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the country.” The campaign will headline with the message that plasma is ‘the medicine in you’, emphasising that for some patients there is no alternative treatment is available. Plasma makes up most of your blood. It’s the fluid that carries everything around the body, including the antibodies which can help the recipient fight infections. Plasma donation is similar to blood donation. In plasma donation, your blood is gradually run through a machine which separates out some of your plasma. Your red blood cells are returned to you, so you can carry on with your day as normal. To help save lives by donating plasma, call 0300 123 23 23, search ‘donate plasma’ or visit www.blood.co.uk/plasma

As a Clinical Nurse Specialist on Breast Cancer Now’s Helpline, I’m acutely aware of the shattering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the emotional wellbeing of people with breast cancer. News of a diagnosis can be a lonely experience, and the pandemic has at times exacerbated this, denying people the chance to be with loved ones. We’ve seen a sharp rise in calls to our Helpline and emails to our Ask Our Nurses service from people struggling emotionally – many say the loneliness they’ve felt living with breast cancer during the pandemic has been the hardest emotional impact to cope with, and that it’s negatively impacted their mental health. As many of us look ahead to a ‘new normal’ beyond the pandemic, this World Mental Health Day, we must acknowledge the loneliness legacy facing people who’ve lived with breast cancer through the pandemic and commit to addressing it. This Breast Cancer Awareness month, we want to remind everyone affected by breast cancer that we’re always with you, in every way we can. Thanks to support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, our Online Support Services are one click away for anyone after a breast cancer diagnosis. Whether you’re a younger woman, adjusting to life after treatment, or living with incurable secondary breast cancer, our tailored support provides a confidential, safe space to connect with others and access specialist information. war heroes to be remembered
This November Sheffield will, as always, remember the service and sacrifice of those in our Armed Forces and those who gave their lives for our country. In commemoration various activities will take place throughout the month, including the city’s Poppy Appeal, which will begin on 30 October; a Poppy Laying Service with The Royal British Legion (RBL) Sheffield and a Civic Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in Barkers Pool. The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Gail Smith said: “Our Remembrance Day plans will be announced in full soon – including a Poppy Laying Service and Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph. I look forward to receiving the first poppy in Sheffield when our Poppy Appeal launches later this month and to seeing many others wearing their poppies with pride. We are working closely with the Royal British Legion, as we do every year, and will ensure there is a fitting tribute to all those who fought so bravely and gave their lives so that we can live ours.” A Royal British Legion spokesperson said: “Sheffield has always been very supportive of our Poppy Appeal and the city always does itself proud in terms of Remembrance Parades. There will be significant Poppy Appeal activity in Sheffield this year, with the support of the City Council, including street collections, and we are excited to see our Poppy Appeal volunteers returning throughout the city this year after Covid curtailed face-to-face collections in 2020.” Full details of all Sheffield’s Remembrance activity will be announced soon. offers complete funeral service
Eric Eyre Funeral Service understands how difficult the process of planning a funeral for a loved one can be and offer a bespoke funeral service, whilst continuing to uphold traditional values. Established since 1864, Eric took over the business in 1955 and has been looking after families in the local community and surrounding areas of Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham ever since, with branches at High Green and Sheffield Lane Top. Available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and with decades of experience in guiding bereaved clients through this difficult time, Eric Eyre provide a professional yet personal service, caring for you and your loved ones while facilitating the necessary funeral arrangements and ensuring your wishes are carried out with care and compassion. Eric Eyre go the extra mile to provide an exceptional service and will take responsibility for ensuring everything is perfectly organised to deliver a fitting tribute to your loved one’s life story. “Just as other aspects of life have evolved, so has society’s approach to funerals, with modern funerals a very different affair to the traditional, formal black-tie events of years gone by,” says Wayne Pickering, manager at Eric Eyre Funeral Service. “For many, a funeral has moved from being a sombre affair to a celebration of life – complete with all that you’d expect from any other celebration, including music, entertainment and laughter. That is why we are always on hand to offer guidance on the many ways we can add a personal touch, just let us know what you would like and we will do our utmost to meet your requirements.” “ With over 20 years’ experience of the industry, and many years’ previous experience with John Fairest, Wayne was offered the opportunity to join Eric as manager in 2017, “I joined John Fairest

as a hearse driver in 1997 and was later promoted to funeral director. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years of service I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted. In September 2017 I was offered the opportunity to join the team at Eric Eyre’s and to ‘move back home’, as I say, as I live local to both branches. It was, and still is, a fantastic opportunity for me to grow and develop an already friendly family run business and provide our local community with a warm and compassionate service.” Completing the team at High Green is Sharon Clayton and Kay Cooper, while Beverley Travis and Ruth Fenlon look after the branch at Sheffield Lane Top, which opened four years ago. “Our aim is to be there for our clients in every way that we can and make sure that their loved one is sent on their final journey exactly as they would have wanted. Your first point of contact will be the person you deal with throughout the process and whether the death has occurred at home, in a hospital or elsewhere, we will guide from the initial arrangement all the way through to directing the funeral. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.” If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service.

the “big o” is back! In 1963 Roy Orbison performed for the first time, at The Adelphi in Slough - in December 2018 The Roy Orbison Story performed at The Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End. In 1988 Roy Orbison joined ‘The Traveling Wilburys.’- The Roy Orbison Story create an incredible finale to the show as the whole cast comes together to celebrate the Traveling Wilburys. In 2017 Roy Orbison classics were remastered by The Philharmonic orchestra! – The Roy Orbison Story proudly present their versions of these masterpieces. Roy Orbison worked with George Harrison, in The Roy Orbison Story ‘Something’ is really ‘Something,’ and ‘You got it’ will have you thinking ‘they’ve got it.’ In 2019 - Thanks to the wonders of technology Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly shared the stage as the Hologram tour toured the world. This year our very own ‘brown eyed handsome man’ joins the show at many of our venues.
Chris Isaak collected many awards on behalf of The Orbison Family – he also recorded many of Roy Orbison’s songs – in The Roy Orbison Story the compliment is returned with stunning versions of Blue Hotel and Wicked Game. Roy Orbison duetted with KD Lang… the production turns it upside down and presents ‘Till the heart caves in’, which was composed by The Big O’ and recorded by KD Lang. Barry Steele and a fabulous cast of musicians and singers will take you on a musical journey from ‘The Black and White Night’ right through to the Traveling Wilburys and beyond - with so much more in between. They promise they’ll have you dancing in those aisles, in an evening jam packed with solid gold hits - Rock and soul with style. They are bringing the evening to the Sheffield City Hall on October 31st - call the Box Office on 0114 2789789 for tickets.
SHEFFIELD CLUB ENJOYS STARRING ROLE It has been available for a few weeks now and received critical acclaim but few people know that Crookes Social Club enjoys a starring role in the new musical film ‘Everbody’s Talking About Jamie’ which is out in cinemas and on Amazon Prime now. The film, based on a hit West End production, is about a 16-year-old boy who wants to become a drag queen and stars Sarah Lancashire, Richard E Grant and Sharon Horgan. Several key scenes from the movie were filmed at the Crookes Social Club, including a spectacular song-and-dance number which takes place in the club’s large Concert Hall. Club Manager Maurice Champeau said: “They did 15 days filming at the club and it
was incredible to see how they temporarily transformed the club to make it fit in with the story. “They even put a special
treatment on the walls to make it look like there were cigarette smoke stains and they also changed the sign outside to the name of a fictional club.
“At one point we had 300 extras in the building plus three double-decker catering buses outside so it was certainly a major production.”

We will be collecting for this amazing cause, after every show. Our aim is to raise 2.5 million (it’s a long plan!!). Performed by a full live rock band and our incredible singers, complete with brilliant personalities & hilarious comedy value this really is a night out unlike any other. With music from artists such as Queen, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Van Halen, Toto, Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses, AC/DC, Prince, Dire Straits & so many more.
The Upbeat Beatles are a rockin’ band with tight musicianship and powerhouse vocals! You’ll be jumping from the word go! There isn’t a band to touch them - 8 bars of “Twist and Shout” and you will know why! Breath taking harmonies and guitar solos all wrapped up in Scouse humour, the audience will be left on an emotional high. From the depths of the Cavern to the Apple roof top, through Beatlemania, America, Sergeant Pepper to Abbey Road, their attention to detail will draw you into the world of the Beatles like no other show. If you love the Beatles you’ll love this show, and if you don’t love the Beatles you’ll love this show!

RECORD ATTENDANCE AT THE LANE Moore: Post-Bolton United Women’s fourgame unbeaten run ended with a 2-0 defeat at home to Liverpool in front of a record crowd at Bramall Lane. 4,100 supporters created a great atmosphere on a day which saw the Blades smash their previous attendance record, but the visitors were too good in the first half as goals at both the start and end of the half did the damage. It took just seven minutes
for Liverpool to open the scoring when Charlotte Wardlaw lifted an effort from the edge of the box over Fran Kitching and into the net. It gave the Blades an uphill task but Neil Redfearn’s side grew into the game soon after, with Lucy Watson the spark as she saw an effort blocked inside the Liverpool box, before the 17-year-old smashed an effort into the side-netting after wriggling free of her marker.
The pressure continued as Courtney Sweetman-Kirk charged down a clearance from Liverpool goalkeeper Rachael Laws but the ball bounced the wrong side of the post before Sophie Bradley-Auckland headed a corner wide. The sucker-punch came eight minutes before the break when Leanne Kiernan headed home from close range with what would be the decisive blow. It could have been three
shortly after if not for a good save from Kitching and even better block on the line from Georgia Robert, before the second save saw both sides struggle to create further chances. United more than matched Liverpool after the break but couldn’t find a way back into the game. SweetmanKirk hit the post but after the offside flag had brought a halt to the attack, before Watson again forced Laws into action with an effort
from the edge of the box. Liverpool wasted a golden chance to extend their lead late on when substitute Missy Bo Kearns broke from a corner but fired wide when through on goal, but the visitors walked away with the points. Blades: Kitching, Newsham (Paul 86), Robert, Lipka, Sweetman-Kirk, Cusack, Watson (Wilcock 90), J. Clarke, Walton (Bourne 67), Rayner, Bradey-Auckland.
The Owls posted a 1-0 win over Bolton at Hillsborough on Saturday and here are the talking points from Darren Moore’s post-match press conference.
ON THE WIN It was really pleasing to get the three points today because we tweaked with the formation and had two days to work on it so credit to the players. I think Bolton are the best side we have played this season, they came here in the ascendancy, they are a very good side but we have come away with the points. We got the win at Mansfield in midweek and we’ve got the win today so it’s been a good productive few days for everyone at the club. ON SUBSTITUTIONS It’s a bitter blow because we have lost two key players to the system at half time, they couldn’t carry on, we think they are both muscular but Sam and Lewis will be monitored and assessed over the coming days. Injuries are part of the game but to pick up two in the first half today was really unfortunate. We were dogged and determined to make sure we held on for the win and that was pleasing. We knew if we got the ball out wide today and got balls
Owls starlet Hall takes England bow ONLY A SHORT WALK FROM SWFC
Owls academy graduate Jack Hall made his international debut on Monday for the England Under-18s as the Young Lions beat Russia 3-0. The contest in Marbella rounded off a productive trip to Spain, where England played two friendly
encounters. Ryan Garry’s side went down by the odd goal in three to Norway last Thursday - Hall was an unused substitute - but returned to winning ways against Russia. Hall celebrated his 17th birthday this week and
into the box one would go our way and that’s what happened but obviously we feel for Sam and Lewis and hopefully it’s nothing too serious.
ON JOE WILDSMITH I thought his performance and decision-making was very good today and he has the clean sheet which is pleasing for Joe. The way he came out to deal with the crosses towards the end, the way he came out to punch, took the pressure off the defence and collectively they have worked hard to get the clean sheet today. Joe has had to be patient and can be pleased with his performance. I was pleased he had the opportunity of the cup match on Tuesday night and that served him well for Bolton today. ON LEE GREGORY I am so pleased for Greggers to get the winning goal today. The way he leads the line for us has been exceptional. He
puts in a real shift every game and today he has his reward. He’s a quality player for us and a key player. We’ve been working on that kind of goal on the last couple of days in training so it’s nice to see the win come from that. I was really pleased with his physical output, he covered every blade of grass across that frontline and it was a top all-round performance. ON DIGGING DEEP The injuries meant we had to shuffle the pack and dig deep this afternoon. Ideally I would have liked to have brought the fresher legs on in the latter part of the game. But we do our work in training in terms of nullifying the opposition under different circumstances. They came at us but I didn’t really feel we were in any danger as long as everybody kept their concentration, which they did and we saw the game out.
it was a joint celebration as the Worksop product played the whole of the second half in the comprehensive win. Goals from Sonny Perkins, Michael Olakigbe and Lewis Hall gave new head coach Garry his maiden victory.

Leading the line
Lee Gregory notched his third goal of the season on Saturday as Wednesday returned to winning ways at Hillsborough. The striker’s 66th minute winner against Bolton secured the three points in S6 and Darren Moore lavished the praise on Gregory for his performances this season. The 33-year-old’s work ethic and quality on the ball was evident again at the weekend and his matchwinner in front of the Kop a just reward. The manager said: “I’m really pleased for Lee Gregory, he works tirelessly in every game. “What you want from your number nine is goals and I’m really pleased with that side of his game as well. “The way he leads the line for us has been exceptional. He puts in a real shift every game and got his reward. He’s a quality player for us and a key player. “We’ve been working on that kind of goal the last couple of days in training so it’s nice to see the win come from that. “I was really pleased with his physical output, he covered every blade of grass across that frontline and it was a top all-round performance.”
Owls to assess Gibson and Hutchinson The Owls will assess the injuries sustained by Lewis Gibson and Sam Hutchinson during our 1-0 win over Bolton on Saturday. Wednesday manager Darren Moore was forced to reshuffle the pack at half time with both players unable to continue and the game delicately poised at 0-0. Chey Dunkley and Dennis Adeniran came on for the start of the second half to fill the voids. On the injuries, Moore said: “The disappointing thing about Saturday was those injuries. “We had two of our big players come off at half time, in terms of the system we were playing, and that’s where the disappointment comes in. “Losing those two was a big blow for us so there are mixed emotions after the win.” Both players will report back at Middlewood Road today as our focus turns to Saturday’s trip to Wimbledon. “It’s too early to give a prognosis, we’ll see after Monday how they shape up,” Moore said. “We’ll get them in on Monday and see what the medical team says after an assessment but both were unable to carry on at half time. “It disrupted the gameplan and the rhythm because as the game ebbs and flows, we had more attacking players on the bench. “When you get to that 60/70-minute mark, you want to bring them on and I wasn’t able to do that. “So we had a reshuffle and credit to the boys, they got on with it. The job going into the week was to win the game on Tuesday and win the game on Saturday and they did that.”

Manager Richie Wellens has received a two-game touchline ban and a fine following a breach of FA Rule E3 at Rovers’ away match against Plymouth Argyle on September 25. The ruling means he will not be in the dugout for Rovers’ upcoming Sky Bet League One matches against Wycombe Wanderers (October 16) and Gillingham (October 19) but will return for Rovers’ home match against Cheltenham Town on October 23. As a club that always has the local community right at the centre of our thoughts, Rotherham United were proud to support the Maltby Foodbank with the donation of the meals which had been provided for our first team for the postponed trip to Charlton Athletic on Saturday. After the fixture was postponed due to a number of international call-ups for both sides, Performance and Medicine Manager Ross Burbeary made contact with the club’s Community Sports Trust to divert the delivery of the meals to ensure that they could be put towards a worthy cause in the local area. Having contacted a number of charities and homeless shelters within the town, it was the Maltby Foodbank, run by St Mary Magdalene Church, who received the donation, with Millers Head of Community Jamie Noble on hand to make the delivery. The food bank helps many families in Maltby and have seen an increase in the number of families needing support following the Covid-19 pandemic. The Millers made a similar donation following the postponement of their trip to take on Brentford last season and Head of Community Jamie Noble was pleased that the meals were used to ensure those who needed them were cared for in the local area. “Once we’d received the phone call from Ross Burbeary, we were delighted to ensure that the meals found a good home, with one of the many worthwhile causes in our local community,” he told www.themillers.co.uk. “We reached out to a number of charities in the area and it was our friends from Maltby who replied saying they could put the meals to good use at such short notice, and we were more than happy to facilitate the delivery. “I have to say a big thank you to Ross and the rest of the team for making this possible and I think it goes a long way to showing just how invested we are as a football in caring for those in our town that need our help the most. “The meals consumed by our players on a matchday are of course rich with nutritional value and the guys at the foodbank were incredibly grateful for the donations, as we were.”
