APPEAL LAUNCHED TO REMOVE GUNS FROM STREETS The charity Crimestoppers has this week launched a major campaign in Sheffield as it appeals for anonymous information about recent and historic shootings. The campaign is in response to a spate of firearms attacks – some of which have been fatal - that have taken place in the city. Many of these attacks are linked to rival drug gangs and drug dealing, but innocent bystanders have witnessed these attacks too. Crimestoppers – which is independent of the police received over 6,000 pieces of anonymous information from people in South Yorkshire over the past year. This led to a number of guns being seized and arrests being
made, which helps to keep people and communities safe from harm, and to ensure justice is given to victims and families. Everyone who contacts Crimestoppers – either by phone on 0800 555 111 or via crimestoppers-uk.org - stays 100% anonymous. Always. The charity has kept this guarantee since Crimestoppers began in the late 1980s. Gemma Gibbs, South Yorkshire Regional Manager at the charity Crimestoppers, said: “Guns cause enormous harm to not only individuals, but also the wider area as threats and intimidation prevent people and communities from living safe

and rewarding lives. “Keeping our communities, families and streets safe is a top priority. We all have a role to play in helping put a stop to shootings on our streets and this is especially so if we know who’s involved. You can help make a big difference. If you prefer not to talk directly to the authorities, then our charity is here for you. We need information on who is carrying out these shootings, where the weapons and bullets are stored, descriptions of people involved, and the vehicles they use. We take all information seriously and your information could be vital.
“Those who carry out gun attacks rely on the myth that no one should `grass’, as it suits them to build up a wall of fear to avoid being caught. They have no respect for life or the damage they cause to families and communities. So, please do the right thing and contact Crimestoppers. You’ll be helping to bring peace to our streets and communities and helping to stop violence in its tracks whilst staying 100% anonymous. Always.” Dr Alan Billings, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner added: “The priority for police is to keep people safe and this is done best when they work in communities and with

communities. “That means people engaging with police or Crimestoppers. Your observation or piece of information may be the missing piece of the jigsaw and may be the key to police bringing an offender before the courts.”
If you have any information about crime across Sheffield and South Yorkshire and prefer not to speak directly to the authorities, then contact the charity Crimestoppers 100% anonymously on 0800 555 111 or fill in a simple and secure Anonymous Online Form at www. crimestoppers-uk.org.

Fifteen Sheffield parks flying THE flag As the Green Flag Award scheme marks its Silver Jubilee, 15 parks in Sheffield are among more than 2,000 green spaces across the country, celebrating success this year. The award is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces, recognising environmental character, maintenance and visitor experience. Sheffield City Council is proudly receiving Green Flag Awards for Cholera Monument Grounds and Clay Wood, Devonshire Green, Ecclesall Woods, Firth Heritage Park, Meersbrook Park, Millhouses Park, Norfolk Heritage Park, Peace Gardens, Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Sheffield Winter
Garden, Tinsley Green, Weston Park and Wheata Woods. Green Flags were also awarded to Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust for Wyming Brook Nature Reserve, and Green Estate for Manor Fields Park. The Green Flag awards were announced in the same week that Sheffield topped the charts for its open spaces, in the national Thriving Places index. Since the start of the pandemic parks and green spaces have played a vital role for people as a place to relax, exercise and meet friends and family safely. Sheffield parks and countryside staff have worked tirelessly throughout
the pandemic to make sure the city’s green spaces are well maintained for visitors, resulting in Sheffield once again retaining the high standards awarded to Green Flag sites. Councillor Alison Teal, Executive Member for Wellbeing, Sustainable Neighbourhoods, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “Our parks, woodlands and green spaces are the jewel in Sheffield’s crown, and we are incredibly lucky to have so many amazing open spaces to enjoy. I’m so proud of what our hard-working teams have achieved, with more than 800 green spaces to look after it’s a real testament to them to once
again be awarded so many Green Flag sites. “I want to thank all the local people who support us in looking after our parks, many of them giving up their time so that others can benefit and enjoy spending time outdoors and in nature. We have very passionate Friends Groups in the city and they deserve recognition for the effort they put in to their local areas. “We recognise the important role that quality green spaces play in improving health and wellbeing and prioritise areas where parks need more investment. We have a whole programme of improvements planned for the year ahead and continue to work with partners to secure funding
and investment at every opportunity. I hope that this time next year we’ll be celebrating with even more Green Flag awards added to the list.” Commenting on the news that Sheffield has achieved Green Flag Award standards at sites across the city, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making Sheffield’s beautiful parks worthy of a Green Flag Award.” “To meet the requirements demanded by the scheme is testament to the hard work of the staff and volunteers who do so much to ensure that high standards of horticulture, safety and environmental management
are met, and that parks support people to live healthy lives.” The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by
environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world. You can check out all of the Green Flag Award-winning parks and green spaces on the Green Flag website.

News, Information and Advice the source opens doors for apprenticeship opportunities
Sheffield charity The Source Skills Academy is giving young people a chance to use their half-term break to find jobs… AND still enjoy a computer game or two. From October 25 the academy on Meadowhall Way is running a SuperRecruitment Week, aimed at getting young jobless and students not wanting to continue college or A level courses into apprenticeships or placements on the government’s Kickstart scheme. Education sector research predicts an imminent departure of students from 6th form or college courses started in September. “It’s vital these young people don’t end up unemployed or in dead-end jobs. We have apprenticeship jobs offering real career potential waiting at leading local businesses. We urge young people to come to this event,” said Dale Robinson, director of Business Development. Attendees can talk with advisors about their futures and apply for over 75 apprenticeship jobs in IT, Admin Office, Customer Service, Hospitably, Warehousing, Marketing and Care. Local companies attending include award-winning Sheffield videogame developer Sumo-Digital. Launched in 2003, the company has made groundbreaking games for Microsoft, Sony, Apple and Sega and employs over 750 in the UK, Poland and India. Jake Habgood, Sumo’s Director of Education Partnerships, will be explaining the range of games industry careers and how to get into them. Attendees can try their hand at Sumo’s double BAFTA 2021
award-winning PlayStation 5 game Sackboy and a new version of 1990s Sheffield-made classic Zool, which has been remade by students of the SumoDigital Academy, a postgraduate apprenticeship scheme for game programmers. The academy, a new industry initiative, is currently aimed at graduates of non-games degrees. “It’s a shame that it’s become the norm to have a degree to get into our industry. Many of our senior people at Sumo began developing games for Gremlin in Sheffield in the 1980s. They didn’t have degrees, but they were hugely talented”, said Jake “We are growing a relationship with The Source to help build pathways into the industry for the young talent we know still exists in South Yorkshire.” The Source’s event runs 10-3pm, it’s free to attend and there’s no need to book a place. A ground floor IT suite will be available for anyone wanting to search for jobs or prepare CVs and on Wednesday October 27 (10-2pm) staff will be helping people into paid six-month placements on the government’s Kickstart scheme. For more information or to apply for a vacancy, contact Amanda Smith on 0114 2635721. Over 60? Bored with staying in or the same weekly routine?

warm home discount still available More than two million energy customers have been displaced from failed suppliers, but among them are eligible consumers who still have time to re-apply for the Warm Home Discount from their new provider. ‘First come, first served’ applications remain open with the six major suppliers that have taken on displaced customers Many other suppliers are also still open to applications, including Ovo Energy, SSE, and Scottish Power One supplier scheme with So Energy is yet to open, though applications are due to begin this month Despite flaws to the scheme, Uswitch is calling on customers to do their research and apply Households can visit Uswitch’s Warm Home Discount guide to find out more Customers eligible for the £140 Warm Home Discount still have time to apply, including those among the two million who have been with a recently failed supplier[1], according to Uswitch.com, the comparison and switching service. The Warm Home Discount aims to reduce fuel poverty by providing low-income households with a £140 discount on their energy bills. The government is proposing to increase the discount to £150 from 2022. Elderly people on low incomes who receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit automatically receive the discount. However, people on income support or other allowances - who typically make up the broader group - have to apply to their participating energy supplier in order to access the money. With 15 suppliers having exited the market in 2021, some eligible households may be at risk of missing out on the discount if they forget to re-apply with their new supplier. Uswitch research shows there is still time to apply, as all the major providers who have taken on displaced customers this year are still open to applications. These suppliers are British Gas, British Gas Evolve, EDF Energy, E.ON Next, Octopus Energy and Shell Energy. New British Gas customers who were accepted onto their former supplier’s Warm Home Discount scheme as part of the Broader Group will be automatically added to British Gas’ scheme. However, displaced customers with other suppliers will need to re-apply once they receive their new customer number. Many other suppliers that operated the scheme last year are also still open to applications, including Ovo Energy, SSE, Scottish Power, and others. Utilita remains the only supplier to have already closed applications, while So Energy has yet to open theirs. However, So Energy says its applications will open this month. Previous Uswitch research found there is a widespread lack of knowledge about the scheme, leading many to miss out. Nearly a third of people (32%) who could be eligible for the discount did not know the scheme existed. Last year, the Government pledged to consult on

In the meantime, anyone who believes they are eligible should apply as soon as they can, as the scheme is operated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. There is a fixed pot of money to be distributed, which this year has risen with inflation from £351 million to £357 million. Qualifying applicants will have their rebates paid by March 31, 2022. Justina Miltienyte, energy policy expert at Uswitch. com, said: “Eligible consumers are in danger of falling through the cracks if their supplier goes bust and they are moved to another provider. The £140 may not be enough to balance out rising energy prices, but it will still be a lifeline to many people on low incomes this year. Thankfully, Warm Home Discount applications are still open with almost all the suppliers which were involved last year. This includes all the major providers who have taken on customers from those that have exited the market. If you believe you are eligible for the discount, we recommend that you apply for it through your supplier as soon as possible. Even if you applied with an energy company which has since gone bust and moved to a new provider, we recommend that you reapply with the new supplier so you do not miss out.”

Chancellor urged to use budget to cut tax on draught beer CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, is urging the Chancellor Rishi Sunak to use his Budget later this month to introduce a new, lower rate of duty for draught beer. The consumer group, which represents 170,000 pub goers and beer drinkers, wants to see a lower rate of beer duty where it is served on draught in places like pubs, social clubs and taprooms. The introduction of a differential rate of duty for draught beer would better support pubs and social clubs across Great Britain, helping them to recover from the pandemic, compete with supermarkets and thrive in the years to come. The move could also help create jobs in the beer and pubs sector, and encourage the wellbeing benefits of enjoying a pint in your local. Ahead of the Budget on 27 October CAMRA is mobilising pub goers up and down the country to get behind
the campaign for fairer tax on beer in pubs by using their template email to contact their local MP. The ‘email your MP’ tool is available at: https://camra.e-activist.com/ page/91459/action/1 Speaking about the campaign CAMRA National Chairman Nik Antona said: “A new draught beer duty rate would be a huge improvement to the way beer is taxed, allowing for a reduced rate of tax on beer sold on draught in pubs, social clubs and taprooms. “This would help pubs to compete with supermarkets, be a boost to local economies and job markets and encourage responsible drinking in the regulated environment of the local pub. This will also help to ensure that our pubs remain at the heart of our communities, helping to combat loneliness and social isolation. “It is vital that the Chancellor uses this Budget to support the beer and pubs sector as it continues the long recovery from the Covid pandemic. A new draught beer duty rate is the best way to do just that, and would make sure that our pubs can survive and thrive in the years to come.”
Tickets For Good distribute free tickets for celebrations Whilst Film stars and Sheffield’s glitterati walked up the pink carpet for the invite-only screening of ‘Everybody’s Talking about Jamie’ at the Crucible on Fri 17th September, Tickets for Good worked with Sheffield City Council and Cinema For All to help NHS staff and people from Sheffield-based social groups to come and enjoy the show at The Abbeydale Picture House (who also hosted an official after party), city centre venue DINA, the Kelham Island Film Club, The Civic in Barnsley, Blend Kitchen and the Film Unit at The University of Sheffield. Tickets for Good were selected to distribute the free event tickets because of their connections to the Sheffield cultural scene and because of their Ticket Fund campaign which sees an allocation going to NHS Staff and to local based charities. It was important to ensure the film, whose message is all about diversity, acceptance and equality, could be accessed by those who might not otherwise be able to get to the cinema, and so a partnership between Cinema for All (who champion community cinema across the country) and Tickets for Good was an ideal way of helping to include wider audiences.
For the ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’ screenings allocations went to Independent Visitors (a volunteer based befriending service for children and young people in the care service), REMA (Rotherham Ethnic Minority Alliance), Darnall Forum and Humankind, a housing project. Louise Morley from Humankind said; ‘Many of our residents are on benefits and are unable to work whilst in the early stages of recovery. They have very little money for luxuries so we were so very grateful for the tickets. I know it has built up their confidence in doing something new, as well as them feeling special in having such a treat gifted to them. I know they had a wonderful night, and actually we are only up the road from where it was filmed, we saw a lot of it being filmed so it was even more of a treat to see it finally released’. One of the NHS staff who attended one of the Cinema For All screenings said: ‘Thank you to Tickets for Good for providing tickets for us to see the screening of Everybody’s Talking about Jamie. We really appreciated the evening out. Good film and nice cosy venue. Everybody had a good time” ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’ is a true Sheffield success story. The original
stage musical (inspired by the 2011 documentary - ‘Jamie: Drag Queen at 16’) was created for the Crucible Theatre by Sheffield Theatres, before going on to storm the West End. The city of Sheffield features heavily in the musical and the film adaptation from local film giants Warp Films includes many well known Sheffield locations. After several COVID related delays, the film has finally hit the big (and small) screens. The Sheffield film premiere took place at The Crucible on Fri 17th Sept, the original home of the musical, and was attended by Jamie Campbell (the original Jamie), Max Harwood and film producer (Warp Films) Mark Herbert amongst others. Councillor Julie Grocutt, Deputy Leader at Sheffield City Council, said: “The Sheffield Premiere of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie was a very special moment for the city, celebrating Sheffield’s diversity and cultural significance, and the roots of this extremely moving and inspiring story. From the dreams of a local lad from Parson Cross, developed into a stage musical first performed here at The Crucible and then taken to the big screen by Sheffield’s own Warp Films, watching our city, the streets we all walk
and the views we all treasure, it’s truly amazing. “Tickets for the Crucible premiere were understandably like gold dust, and so we were absolutely delighted that in true Sheffield style we were able to open up the Sheffield’s premiere evening to so many more local people completely free of charge. We want to thank Amazon Prime Video for letting us screen the film in this very special way, as well as Warp Films, Tickets for Good, Cinema For All, and all the local venues who took part, for making it possible and extending the party right across the city.” From sold-out West End shows to gigs and festivals, Sheffield’s unique ticketdonation enterprise, Tickets For Good, have already sent thousands of NHS workers to the UK’s best events - for just the price of a coffee. Now their new campaign The Ticket Fund will bring businesses large and small together to fundraise for event tickets, which will be donated to hardworking NHS teams nationwide as thanks for their incredible work. The campaign also seeks to direct much-needed cash into the pockets of theatres, nightclubs and event promoters as they struggle to deal with the prolonged effects of COVID.

Moore: Post-dons talking points CELEBRATING A BLADES PIONEER Here are some of the talking points from Darren Moore’s post-match press conference after Wimbledon came from behind to deny the Owls three points at Plough Lane.
ON THE GAME As far as I’m concerned it’s two points we have thrown away. We’ve created chance after chance and we have to take them and put the game to bed. I said to the lads at half time we should be at least 2-0 up and then we’ve had the chances to make it 3-0 and didn’t take them. We’ve allowed them back in the game and it’s concentration that’s cost us and it’s something we need to improve and improve fast because it’s costing us goals
and costing us points.
ON TWO POINTS DROPPED We came here for the win and we haven’t got it and we should have, so I am standing here very perplexed. We’ve thrown two points away. It’s something I must reiterate. There are a lot of things I can say about this game but the biggest thing is we have dropped two points.
game on Tuesday and we will assess the goalkeeper situation then.
ON CHANCES CREATED The negatives for me today are quite simple, we have lost two points and we should have won the game. The positives for me are the
chances we created and the number of them. We started with a lot of energy, a lot of drive, and the chances kept on coming. I thought Lee Gregory was excellent today, he scored two goals and could have had a hat-trick. Their
goalkeeper has made two outstanding saves. We came here to win the game and we haven’t won the game so I’m disappointed, really disappointed. But we have another game on Tuesday, we go again, and we will go to Cambridge looking to win the game.
ON THE GOALKEEPERS Joe was always going to play today. Bailey has been away with Northern Ireland, he’s done a lot of travelling this week to Bulgaria and Switzerland, he only joined up with us on Friday so missed all the building to this game. We have another
Wellens rues missed chances Richie Wellens spoke to the media after his side were beaten by Wycombe Wanderers in Sky Bet League One. Early goals from Anthony Stewart and Adebayo Akinfenwa sealed the three points for the Chairboys, while Jordy Hiwula rattled the bar and Tiago Cukur forced a good save from David Stockdale as Rovers searched in vain for a way back into the match.
On conceding early: “It was a terrible start in terms of allowing the corner to go to the back post and they made the first contact. “We made the mistake of wrestling with Akinfenwa but we made the point before the game you can’t win that battle. “My goalkeeper hasn’t had a save to make after their second goal and the game probably went flat late on because of the experience they have.”
On missed chances: “We made enough opportunities to get back in the game but we didn’t manage to take them. “We need the players to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and be an influence vocally to those around them. “Wycombe are good at what they do and anybody who finishes above them will get promoted.”
OWLS, MILLERS & ROVERS IN FA CUP ACTION
The Owls will host Plymouth Argyle in the first round of the Emirates FA Cup. The tie is scheduled to take place on Saturday 6 November. Ticket information for the Hillsborough clash will be confirmed in due course.
Rovers will head to Sky Bet League Two side Scunthorpe United in the Emirates FA Cup first round. The tie will be played over the weekend of November 5-8. Rovers reached the fourth round of the competition last season, before being beaten by

It was a big win for us - Warne Paul Warne speaks following an excellent 4-1 victory on home soil over Portsmouth... “That’s the difference. Taking your chances. “I always thought we were not far away from scoring a lot of goals and today we took our chances really well. “That is probably what has been missing in our performances because they have been excellent. “I thought they started in
As part of this week’s edition of UTB - United’s official matchday programme - the Blades celebrate the career of a Blades pioneer. When Ian Benjamin pulled on the red and white shirt of Sheffield United in the late 1970s, he became the first black footballer to play for the Blades in the modern era. In the Millwall edition of United’s official matchday programme, Ian talks about how he became a Blade, his first senior game against non-other than Argentine giants River Plate, his brace against Leicester City and his involvement in a testimonial fixture which is still being talked about over 40 years later. The full feature was in Tuesday night’s programme, but here’s some bonus words from Ian who went on to represent the likes of West Bromwich Albion, Peterborough United, Northampton Town and Southend United to name a few, in a long-playing career which spanned almost 20 years. “I remember going to the ground and then the house in Nether Edge where the young players stayed, and I just got a really good feel for the club, so I signed,” Ian explained of his arrival in Sheffield aged just 15. “When I got close to the first team, the likes of Bobby Campbell and Tony
Kenworthy were very good to me. They treated me so well, they were really nice to the young lads. They were both really good players, and they were the ones I looked up to because they went out of their way for us. Alan Woodward was still at United too, and he was an example for everyone with the longevity of his career and the consistency he provided. “Our coach Cec Coldwell was also brilliant. He was a great person, and he treated me so well, and I remembered that when I was talking with people in the future. He was a big influence on me.” Ian’s time at United coincided with a team which struggled to find their best form on a consistent basis, but did include some of the club’s most entertaining players of alltime. One of which was the late, great, Alex Sabella. Ian said: “I played with some really good players and watching Alex Sabella, I am not saying there was
anyone ever better than George Best, but he had so many similarities with the way he dribbled the ball. He had a lovely left foot; he was so creative, and he’d get you the odd goal as well. Wonderful to watch. A real talent.” By the end of his United career, Ian was asked to play in West Brom midfielder Len Cantello’s testimonial. This game is still providing discussion today as a team of black players picked by Cantello’s Albion teammate Cyrille Regis, took on a team of white players. “I walked into the dressing room and there was Cyrille Regis, Lawrie Cunningham, Brendan Batson, Garth Crooks etc,” Ian remembers. “I knew nothing about it being black players v white players. It was just a game, and I was asked to play. “I was surprised how it turned out, because I don’t think any of us realised how big it would become and that we would be talking about it now.”
the ascendency. I think Portsmouth are a really well-coached team. I thought they looked really well-organised. “For the first 10 minutes, they were definitely on top without really creating anything. “We kicked in and then I thought the longer the game went on, the stronger we looked. “We’re blessed that we’ve got a good squad and the subs don’t make us any weaker. “We went in at half-time 1-0 up and I think it flattered us a bit to be honest. “The goal we gave away rattled the hornet’s nest a little bit and the lads came
through a bit of adversity and for 15 minutes, I’m not saying we were ‘unplayable’ but as good as you’ll probably get. “The lads buzz off goals don’t they and it gives them super confidence, but the game could have gone
another way. “For us to beat a really good team - and I think they are one of the best teams we’ve had here, is a confidence boost. “We have to enjoy the win definitely, and then we’ve got another tough test on Tuesday night.”
