DARK NIGHTS CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED BY SERVICES A campaign to keep people safe and reduce demand on the emergency services in South Yorkshire over Halloween and Bonfire Night launched this week. South Yorkshire Police, South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue and Yorkshire Ambulance Service run operation Dark Nights every year. After a slightly different year last year, this year the campaign has seen police and fire officers once again able to visit schools over the past few weeks to educate children on how to stay safe. Throughout the school halfterm holidays and bonfire period, officers will also be out patrolling in known antisocial behaviour ‘hot spot’ areas. All of the services are asking

people across the county to be 999 wise – especially on Bonfire Night – to help keep their resources free for genuine emergencies. For the police, this means only calling 999 if you are experiencing an emergency or someone’s life is in danger and using alternative ways to report non-emergency crime. Silver Commander for Dark Nights, Chief Inspector Lee Carlson: “Your neighbourhood teams will be out and about in the evenings throughout this period, working hard to make sure that everyone can have an enjoyable and safe time. “This is an extremely busy time for officers and our call handlers and I would urge people to think before calling 999 or 101. We need your

support to ensure we are able to respond to the people who need us the most. “Our call handlers have to prioritise the calls coming into our control room. So if you need to report a nonemergency crime, please make use of online reporting on our website- https:// www.southyorks.police.uk/ reportsomething/.” Officers from the fire service are asking people to ring their control room to tell them about planned bonfires – to avoid unnecessary calls during the bonfire period. The fire service is also urging people to attend organised fireworks displays, which they say are safer and more spectacular, rather than having their own.

Station Manager Steve Jones, from the joint fire and police community safety department, said: “Each year we get a small spike in incidents on and around Bonfire Night. We have identified three things the public can do to help us reduce incidents and keep people safe. “Firstly, make sure your bins are in and there’s no loose rubbish on your street that could be set alight. Secondly, if you are having a bonfire, make sure you stay with it and keep it in hand. “Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, by letting our control room staff know you’re having a bonfire you can potentially reduce the amount of times we get called out to garden bonfires. “The people that call these in

are well meaning callers, and we’d always encourage people to call 999 if they discover a fire or need our help, but if we know you’re having a bonfire we will know not to send firefighters to spoil your party.” If you want to know more about what we are doing in your area this Dark Nights period, sign up to SYP Alerts. SYP Alerts is our free messaging service that gives you the latest news and updates direct from the officers who work in your neighbourhood, via email and text. Sign up at www.sypalerts. co.uk. JLS MAKE LONG AWAITED RETURN TO SHEFFIELD Multi BRIT and MOBO Award winning boy band JLS today arrive in Sheffield this week for their eagerly awaited Beat Again UK tour which will see them perform 2 shows at Utilita Arena Sheffield on Thursday 28 & Friday 29 October 2021. The revised tour dates are also released alongside news that JB, Aston, Marvin and Oritsé will also return with a new album in December. Both the tour and record deal mark a new era for JLS as 2021 will see them embark on both a 28 date run as well as returning with their first new music in 8 years, speaking of their new record deal the band said “After 8 years it feels great to sign a new record deal with BMG.

For us, music is the core of everything we do and we are so excited to bring new music to the world again.” As part of their new record deal, JLS will work to modernize their synonymous R&B pop sound leaning on new musical influences whilst ensuring that the essence and DNA of their music and style remains present. Joining JLS on their tour as support is vocal powerhouse Cassa Jackson who released her latest EP Don’t Like It When You Talk About Her an EP detailing her tumultuous love life earlier this month. The title track ‘I Don’t Like It When You Talk About Her’ is a Swift-ian boppy anthem about jealousy and possessiveness, the

heartbreaking ‘Crossroad’ is a wrenching tale of decision making during big life moments, while ‘Knives’ ventures into the kind of dark pop that made Dua Lipa a global phenomenon. Her relatability is the reason she has over 4 million Spotify streams, with ‘Parallel Universe’ reaching over 1.8 million streams alone. She also has over a whopping 162k Tik Tok followers, a testament to her raw natural talent - as most of her Tik Tok videos feature Cassa singing her own songs in her car or kitchen. Cassa stole the limelight supporting The Jacksons on their 50th anniversary tour in Spain and being picked by pop royalty JLS to join them

on their almighty comeback tour, is the perfect way to get Cassa’s unique brand of confessional songwriting heard all over the UK. Performing in massive arenas throughout the country, she will surely gain new fans in every city she visits. Not content with bagging the

most sought-after support slot in pop right now with JLS - she has now announced that she will also be opening for Lionel Richie next summer. Lionel Richie will perform as part of the Nocturne Concert Series at Blenheim Palace,

and Cassa Jackson will take on the support slot, alongside the brilliant Macy Gray. JLS with support from Cassa Jackson Utilita Arena 28/29th October 2021 Tickets available from www. utilitaarenasheffield.co.uk

council outlines clean air zone plans family business offers complete funeral service Sheffield City Council will take a bold step towards making the city’s air cleaner and safer at a special Co-operative Executive meeting on 26 October 2021. If the decision passes, the Council will create a Category C Clean Air Zone, accepting £24million of Government funding to help local drivers upgrade to cleaner vehicles. The Clean Air Zone means the most polluting buses, taxis, vans, coaches and lorries will pay a charge to enter the city centre. Private vehicles will be exempt. Before the zone is introduced, a second citywide consultation will take place in November. This will focus on packages of support to help local businesses and taxi drivers reduce their emissions, including grants and loans. The Clean Air Zone would involve a daily charge for polluting vehicles to enter the city centre and inner ring road. The proposed Category C zone would mean: • Buses, taxis, vans, lorries and coaches which do not meet the Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol emissions standard will be charged. • Private cars and motorbikes will not be charged. In a change to previous proposals, taxis (Private • Hire and Hackney Carriages) will no longer need to be Electric or Ultra Low Emissions Under the new proposals, Euro 6 Diesel or Euro 4 Petrol will not be subject to the charge. Sheffield’s proposed charges are £10 a day for LGVs and taxis, and £50 a day for buses, coaches and HGVs. Sheffield – like most cities in England – currently has illegal levels of harmful nitrogen dioxide (NO2). There is a legal obligation to reduce roadside emissions from older, polluting vehicles in the shortest time possible. Air pollution contributes to lung disease, asthma, heart attacks and stroke. The tragic death of nine-year-old Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah in London in 2013 was directly attributed to air pollution. Most other cities are introducing a Clean Air Zone, including Manchester, Bristol, Bradford and Newcastle. The funding available for upgrades incentivises local drivers to make the jump to electric, rather than another fossil fuel vehicle. Other cities have seen better air quality after introducing Clean Air Zones. In the three months after Birmingham introduced their zone, NO2 dropped by 20 per cent on previous years. Despite dropping during the pandemic, levels of pollution in Sheffield have increased as traffic returned to the roads. The review of the plans announced in 2020, which used computer models to forecast how different options reduce pollution, has shown that the Category C Zone is still required to reduce pollution to legal levels. Funding will also be available to help local taxi drivers and businesses upgrade to electric or ultra-low-emissions (ULEV)

CALL 0151 334 2600

vehicles. These include: • Up to £10,000 grants for electric/ULEV wheelchair-accessible hackney carriages. • Up to £3,000 grants for local private hire taxi drivers up upgrade to electric or ultra-low emissions vehicles. • Up to £3,500 grants for local businesses to upgrade to electric or ultra-low emissions vans. Cllr Douglas Johnson, Executive Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport said: “Clean air benefits us all and none more so than those who have to drive in it. It’s in our power to reduce air pollution, which means it’s in our power to save lives. Air pollution contributes to the early deaths of 500 people every year in Sheffield It particularly affects young children and people with underlying respiratory conditions. The Clean Air Zone means we support small businesses and taxi owners to upgrade their vehicles, to get older, dirty vehicles off the road and to clean up the city. There are exemptions for those who fall between the gaps. It forms part of the broader city centre strategy, including better public transport, better walking and cycling routes and better spaces for people to work, live and play. We believe this will end months of uncertainty for the taxi trade and give them a clear steer for the standards that will be expected for today’s taxi fleet.” Cllr Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “We are absolutely committed to tackling the global climate emergency here in Sheffield, and this includes taking a bold step towards reducing harmful emissions in the city. With the international climate summit COP26 fast approaching, this is an important chance for us to highlight that commitment. Cleaner vehicles are better for the climate and better for our lungs. We also want to use this opportunity to support local businesses to move to electric if they can. We know there is appetite locally from our EV van trial which has been fully booked since launch. Tackling the climate emergency is not something we can do alone as a council, we need the whole city to come together if we are going to have the impact we need to. This Clean Air Zone is an important part of that work, and it is another piece of our City Centre Strategic Vision, looking at the long-term development of the centre to deliver thriving communities, connected places, and sustainable living.” Exemptions from paying the daily charge are also included in the report. There are national exemptions for military, historic and agricultural vehicles. Sheffield is proposing some local exemptions, including: • Emergency service vehicles like ambulances and • fire engines. • Local charities who operate minibuses on a community transport permit. • Businesses which have ordered a compliant vehicle but have not received it due to waiting lists or supply chain delays. The Clean Air Zone and the City Centre Vision will go to a special Co-operative Executive on 26 October.

Eric Eyre go the extra mile to provide an exceptional service and will take responsibility for ensuring everything is perfectly organised to deliver a fitting tribute to your loved one’s life story. “Just as other aspects of life have evolved, so has society’s approach to funerals, with modern funerals a very different affair to the traditional, formal black-tie events of years gone by,” says Wayne Pickering, manager at Eric Eyre Funeral Service. “For many, a funeral has moved from being a sombre affair to a celebration of life – complete with all that you’d expect from any other celebration, including music, entertainment and laughter. That is why we are always on hand to offer guidance on the many ways we can add a personal touch, just let us know what you would like and we will do our utmost to meet your requirements.” “ With over 20 years’ experience of the industry, and many years’ previous experience with John Fairest, Wayne was offered the opportunity to join Eric as manager in 2017, “I joined John Fairest

as a hearse driver in 1997 and was later promoted to funeral director. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years of service I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted. In September 2017 I was offered the opportunity to join the team at Eric Eyre’s and to ‘move back home’, as I say, as I live local to both branches. It was, and still is, a fantastic opportunity for me to grow and develop an already friendly family run business and provide our local community with a warm and compassionate service.” Completing the team at High Green is Sharon Clayton and Kay Cooper, while Beverley Travis and Ruth Fenlon look after the branch at Sheffield Lane Top, which opened four years ago. “Our aim is to be there for our clients in every way that we can and make sure that their loved one is sent on their final journey exactly as they would have wanted. Your first point of contact will be the person you deal with throughout the process and whether the death has occurred at home, in a hospital or elsewhere, we will guide from the initial arrangement all the way through to directing the funeral. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.” If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service.

Photos provide a candid view of long-lost late-night activities A collection of unseen images by celebrated social documentary photographer Bill Stephenson have been hailed as “some of the most striking photos ever recorded of the city’s rock scene”. His images inside Rebels rock club – which operated in the 1980s and early 1990s – feature in a brand new book on the venue which has been written by Neil Anderson

‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Sheffield – Rebels Edition’ tells the story of the Dixon Lane venue which was originally opened as the Penthouse in 1969 by Peter Stringfellow and his brother Geoff. It was taken over by Steve Baxendale in the early 1980s and became Rebels - one of the most popular clubs of the rock genre in the country. Neil Anderson said: “These images capture the club in its prime and are

amongst the best photos I’ve ever seen from the period. It was an era before camera phones and quality photos are a rarity. I’m very grateful for Bill Stephenson for digging into his archives and giving us permission to use the shots.” 250 collector’s edition copies of the book are on sale and half have already been snapped up. ‘Claim Back West Street’ aims to make Sheffield nightspotS safer Students from the University of Sheffield have launched a campaign to make West Street a safer place after increased reports of spiking and harrassment in the city. ‘Claim Back West Street’ has been launched by five students at the University of Sheffield and is rapidly gaining momentum plus support from many of the area’s licensed premises. One of the campaigners, Hannah Youds, said the group have set an eight-week deadline to achieve their goals, which includes creating safe areas in bars and they are pushing hard for all West Street establishments to implement antispiking measures plus introducing Street Angels to Sheffield. Street Angels are people who keep the community secure by patrolling a central location (such as a town or city centre) late at night, usually on a weekend night from 9pm to 3am. She said: “This campaign is very important to us as we are students and frequently travel down West

Street, seeing first-hand the worrying things that are taking place there not specifically at night, but even during the day too. “From a personal perspective, when I and a fellow group member were speaking to people and finding out how they felt about West Street, we were approached by a man shouting strange things in our faces and instantly we felt threatened. “On our Instagram page, we recently did a poll that revealed 93 per cent of people didn’t feel safe on West Street, while only the remaining seven per cent did. This in itself is a shocking statistic and we want to see an improvement when our aims come into place. “We are urgently calling for MPs, councillors, organisations, leaders and residents in the city to back our

campaign and with their support, we can create a safer area and claim back West Street for everyone. “It seems a shame that such a major street in the city is so dreaded by many people and we want to change this.” Hannah said the campaign has received support from a West Street cocktail bar Bloo 88 and the University of Sheffield Students Union Welfare Committee. Earlier this month, several students allegedly had their drinks tampered with on a night out at Sheffield Students’ Union venue. According to Night Time Industry Association (NTIA), there had been a rise in drink-spiking throughout the UK over recent weeks. The group can be reached on Instagram and Twitter.

BLADES TRIUMPH IN DERBY THRILLER A thrilling second-half which produced five goals, saw United win Sunday’s South Yorkshire derby against Barnsley. Lys Mousset netted a brace in as many minutes, before Ben Osborn looked to have made the game safe for the Blades, only for Barnsley to mount a spirited late fightback with Devante Cole and Aaron Leya Iseka scoring to make it a nervous end for the visitors. For the clash at Oakwell, boss Jokanović made five changes. Baldock, McBurnie, Mousset, Norwood and Ndiaye all started, as Sharp, McGoldrick and Hourihane dropped to the bench. Gibbs-White (suspension) and Bogle (ankle) both missed out. United were quickly out of the blocks, but having latched on to McBurnie’s flick on, Mousset dragged an effort wide of the far post. The Blades first corner yielded a second chance, it

was played short, but from Baldock’s deep cross Egan’s header was comfortable for Collins. It was all United in the opening stages and McBurnie was lurking to capitilise on a mix up between Sibbick and his goalkeeper, but Collins recovered quickly enough to gather. Barnsley’s first real venture forward saw Adeboyejo get the better of Davies but his low cross across goal was cleared by Stevens. Following a quiet spell in the game, United had claims for a penalty waved away by referee Ward as Styles tangled with an advancing Baldock, there was minimal contact but arguably on another day enough. The first half ended with chances at both ends. Mousset should have done better with a volley after Ndiaye had fashioned a chance on the right, whilst Moon headed over for the home side, before Adeboyejo had a tame

effort at the near post from a Styles cross. On 51 minutes, United deservedly hit the front. Osborn’s call into the channel saw MOUSSET get the better of Helik and having cut inside he produced an excellent measured finish into the far corner, but his celebrations went too far in the eyes of the referee who booked him. But that didn’t deter MOUSSET who added a second within a matter of minutes, this time hammering home from close-range with Osborn claiming another assist. The two quickfire goals had put Barnsley on the ropes and United sensed a third. Mousset fired over searching for his hat-trick before being replaced by Sharp, as Osborn fired across goal from Fleck’s pass. The game had really opened up, with Barnsley having nothing to lose. Moon struck the post from the edge of the area before

Cole somehow sliced wide from an angled drive from the left by the dangerous Styles. But on 72 minutes, United made it three as OSBORN kept his composure in the area, after McGoldrick and Baldock had combined on the right to create the opportunity. But the home side refused to throw in the towel and got some reward with 12 minutes remaining, as COLE atoned for his earlier miss by volleying past Olsen after Woodrow had controlled another cross from Styles.

And Barnsley gave themselves genuine hope of snatching the most unlikely of draws on 82 minutes as LEYA ISEKA forced his way through United’s and rifled past Olsen. Six minutes of added time were signalled and after a few moments of worry, United saw it out really well to register a deserved away win. Blades: Olsen, Baldock, Stevens, Fleck, McBurnie (Basham 86), Mousset (Sharp 61), Egan, Norwood, Davies, Osborn, Ndiaye (McGoldrick 67).

Must turn draws into wins Dennis Adeniran struck his third goal of the campaign on Saturday at Hillsborough. The midfielder found the back of the Kop net from a narrow angle to put the Owls a goal up after 55 minutes against Lincoln. But the Imps responded and drew level ten minutes from time leaving the former Everton midfielder frustrated at the final whistle. Following our 1-0 win over Bolton at Hillsborough earlier this month, it’s now three draws on the spin for

Wednesday and Adeniran said: “We need to start turning these draws into wins to have a chance of getting promotion or up into the play-offs. “I’m just very disappointed not to get the three points, it’s what we set out for. “I thought at 1-0 we were favourites to get the next goal but then a lapse of concentration from a corner. “We’re 1-0 up, we have to keep that concentration, so it was a hard one to take.” On his third goal of the campaign, the 22-year-old continued: “Obviously I was glad to get the goal but it’s about the three points at the end of the day and we didn’t get them. “I always want the three points and we didn’t deliver. “I am starting to get goals but most importantly, I want to get promoted, I want to get three points. Obviously I am happy with my goal but I want three points more.”

Darren Moore: PostLincoln talking points The Owls posted a 1-1 draw with Lincoln at Hillsborough and here are some talking points from Darren Moore speaking to the media after the game. ON THE GAME I just thought we were a little apprehensive in the first half and we had words at half time about that. We needed to be more attacking and play with more freedom. We got the goal and dominated the ball and I was pleased for the players at that point because you do have to be patient in games and you can get the breakthrough. We did that, we pushed on for the second goal, and the disappointment is that we didn’t get it and then conceded late in the game from a set piece. It’s my job as manager to make it better at both ends and I will do that. TURNING DRAWS INTO WINS It’s vital that we do that because we have to win games. We’re now on the back of a three-game week and we have three draws and three points

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

MAKING CHANGES I opted to play Marvin on the left of the back three because he’s a natural leftfooter and he can attack the ball, get up and down and get the crosses in from that part of the pitch. He saw a lot of the ball today and I thought he did well. We still have some injuries that are forcing my hand in some areas, we are in a position now where I won’t risk Sam for one game when I could lose him for seven. We’ve already lost Lewis there at the back and there is no set time frame on that but it will be considerable. ON CHANCES We had more half chances today rather than clear cut. When we take these kind of chances we will convert the draws into wins. Their

goalkeeper made a very good save from Saido just before half time, we’ve flashed the ball across goal a few times and we throwed caution to the wind with the substitutions because I wanted to get some bodies forward. For a 20-minute spell we were dominant but we couldn’t force the win. If we are to create a fear factor here then we need to win games, it’s as simple as that. TAKING THE POSITIVES I thought Dennis and Fizz were excellent today and I was pleased for Dennis when he got his goal, that’s his third goal of the season, we said he could add goals to his game and he’s doing that. With Fizz, he makes those driving, forceful runs from the midfield that cause problems. He had one run that was fantastic, he went through a number of defenders but the shot went just wide. They both have wonderful drive from midfield and when Dennis scored it seemed to calm everything down but the disappointment was conceding late on.

THE SHAKEY PROUD TO SUPPORT

and of course we wanted more, we wanted all the nine points and we could have got those points. Winning games is what this is all about and that is the challenge to get us to where we want to be. I understand the frustration of the fans because they want the wins just as much as I do.

Josh Render makes Grantham loan move Owls goalkeeper Josh Render has joined Grantham Town on a one-month loan deal. The 21-year-old has linked up with the Northern Premier League side under the management of former Owl, Carlton Palmer. The Hull-born goalkeeper joined Grantham ahead of their home clash with Warrington Town today and made his debut in the 2-1 home defeat. Render has been with Wednesday since Under-13s level and is a regular for Lee Bullen’s Under-23 side. He signed his first professional contract in July 2019 after playing his part in a superb season for the Under-18s, which saw the team do the double, scooping both the North and National Championship. Render extended his contract at Hillsborough in the summer.

Paul Warne spoke to iFollow Millers following his side’s comfortable victory at Milton Keynes Dons, as they maintained their push in the higher echelons of the Sky Bet League One standings. “I’m really pleased. It was a good away performance against a really good team. There were flashes of excellence and that was down to the lads’ dedication. The out of possession stuff was good, today. “We were not faultless, and there are still things to improve upon, but it was very close. We demand a lot out of the group and they delivered. There were some really good performances out there, today. “Dan (Barlaser) is a good kid. He is a bit of a quarterback for us. He enables the other two midfielders to push on. He enables us to switch the play really quick. We like to play with width. It was a really good performance from him and he was chaperoned by two energetic performances from Wilsey and Ollie (Rathbone). “I got booked in the first half for the first time. I’m disappointed I got booked. My mum will definitely text me with her disappointed face and I’ll have to build bridges with my family for the rest of the week.”

Wellens: good value for the win Richie Wellens spoke to the media after the victory over Cheltenham Town in Sky Bet League One. Wellens felt his side were good value for the 3-2 win, after being made to defend well late on. On the result: “It’s a massive result, and given the way the game went towards the end it’s even bigger. “This is the first time we’ve had a chance to try and build some momentum off the back of a win so fingers crossed we can do that. “It was a game that I thought we should have been out of sight in, we controlled everything about it for 60 minutes.”

Man of the Match for MK Dons display Rotherham United midfielder Dan Barlaser has been crowned the PA Entertainments x Terrace Threads Man of the Match for his scintillating display against MK Dons on Saturday, which helped his side to a 3-0 triumph in Sky Bet League One. Millers fans were singing chants of his name and, in the process, drawing comparisons to an Italian superstar famed for his passing range, and it was easy to understand why. Not only did Barlaser find himself setting the tempo in an action-packed engine room, but he was also rewarded with a goal which flew straight in after a wicked delivery from a corner. In a team performance which Millers boss Paul Warne described as ‘almost faultless’, Barlaser was chosen as the standout performer, earning himself in excess of 70% of the Twitter vote, with Michael Ihiekwe, Ollie Rathbone and Chiedozie Ogbene also nominated. On taking the pressure off his players: “A lot of our players have never been 3-0 up before and in this league it’s never over even at that score. “They are a team that is used to winning for the past two years, their substitutes were effective and made a difference. “I wanted the players to play with freedom and leave the pressure to me, I’ve been in football long enough to take that. “We can only concentrate on our performances and we know that if we keep up the levels we’ve been at recently we’ll be fine.” On Ethan Galbraith’s performance: “Class, class footballer. “Ethan was head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch. “He stepped into the midfield and his rotations were brilliant especially for the first goal.”

albraith happy to do LICENSED PRIVATE HIRE We’ll Never Let You Down! a job for the team Available for Ethan Galbraith spoke to the media following the 3-2 win over Cheltenham Town in Sky Bet League One. The 20-year-old produced a brilliant individual display as he stood in at right back for the suspended Kyle Knoyle. On playing where the team needed him: “I was with the United first-team in pre-season and played at right back so I don’t mind doing a job there. “We’ve had a bit of a shortage there at the minute and the gaffer asked me if I could fill in. “I’ll do anything for the team and we all worked together to earn the three points.”

On the team’s performance: “We were the better team and dominated the game for an hour, that’s the level we want to be at every week. “We’ve been playing well recently without the results so we’ve proved a bit of a point today. “Goals give you confidence and you could see the lads were playing with a bit of a weight off our shoulders. “The main thing now is to build on this and that has been the message in the dressing room.”
