UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 ballot now open Sheffield & Rotherham will be front and centre of the biggest women’s European sport event in history after being hand-picked as one of nine host cities for the hotlyanticipated UEFA Women’s EURO 2022. Bramall Lane, home to Sheffield United, is guaranteed to host at least four matches throughout the tournament which kicks off at Old Trafford on July 6. The matches include the Netherlands vs Sweden, Sweden vs Switzerland, Switzerland vs Netherlands, and a semi-final match on July 26. The AESSEAL New York Stadium, home to Rotherham United will play host to France’s three Group D
matches against Italy, Belgium and Iceland and also host a quarter-final clash on Saturday July 23. The world’s leading stars traded plush green pitches for swanky red carpets on Thursday as the draw for the European showpiece took place at Manchester’s Victoria Warehouse. The ticket ballot application window is now officially open and former England captain Rio Ferdinand, who racked up 81 caps for the Three Lions, is backing the summer football bonanza to blaze a trail. The 42-year-old said: “Fans shouldn’t miss out on their chance to be at the biggest women’s EURO ever and enter the ticket ballot now. “I can’t wait to witness
Wembley stadium for the final – its due to be the biggest European crowd for a women’s football match ever. “What a moment for the women’s game that will leave such a massive legacy, inspiring huge numbers to be part of it in the future, whether its playing or watching! “It’s going to be massive next year – I’ve been told It’s set to be history-making for the sport which will be unreal to be a part of and not something you’d want to miss. “It will definitely [bring about] more awareness of the women’s game. If girls out there get to a game or watch the tournament on TV (for free!) and think you know what, I want to play football, for fun or have aspirations to
one day be an International footballer. Then amazing. Everyone deserves the chance to play.” Councillor Julie Grocutt, Deputy Leader at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are so proud to play such a significant role in this tournament. Watching the draw in anticipation yesterday was really exciting and with the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland all playing on home turf at Bramall Lane it’s going to be a summer to remember. “Sheffield will extend a warm welcome to all visitors and we can’t wait to show fans and players all that our great city has to offer. We’re extremely grateful for this opportunity, Europe’s elite female
footballers playing in our city, inspiring so many women and girls to get involved in football and leaving a great legacy behind. “With applications for volunteering and the ballot for tickets now open, I encourage everyone to apply, it’s going to be a phenomenal event and I want all Sheffielders to experience the Women’s EUROS right here in the home of football.” The UEFA Women’s EURO England 2022 ticket ballot application window is now open and closes 16 November. Six of Sheffield’s iconic nightspots finally go on display at the Moor Market An art project that was originally conceived as a way to help people get through the monotony of lockdown goes on public display for the first time this week. The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Gail Smith, will be at the Moor Market this Wednesday, November 3rd, at 3pm to unveil ‘Sheffield’s iconic venues – re-imaged in lockdown’. You are invited to send a journalist/photographer along to cover the event. She’ll be joined by artist Alan Pennington and Dirty Stop Outs’ Neil Anderson that came up with the original idea. Scores of punters that frequented venues stretching right back to the mid-1960s contributed their memories of their favourite nights’ out whilst in lockdown. Dirty Stop Outs’ Neil Anderson that has written a series of books on the city’s iconic venues of yesteryear said: “I was already giving lots of content away from my books to help people in the pandemic and this idea seemed a natural extension. I put the call out for people to tell me their favourite venue of yesteryear and why it mattered so much to them. Even if some of these people had been struggling for weeks in lockdown you almost felt as though you’d flicked a switch as people started reminiscing.”
Neil Anderson then enlisted the talents of local artist Alan Pennington to turn decades old memories into reimagined artworks that truly capture the magic of the six venues: King Mojo (1964-1967), the Fiesta cabaret club (1970-1980), the Limit (1978-1991); the Roxy which ran from the mid-1980s until the late 1990s; the Wapentake rock bar that was hugely popular from the early 1970s until the mid-1990s and Rebels rock club that ran from the early 1980s until the mid-1990s. The exhibition is set to hang in the Moor Market for the rest of November. This will be the first time all six pieces of art have been on public display. Alan Pennington said: “Though I was too young to go to any of the venues I absolutely loved being inspired by the stories of what made these nightspots so special to so many people.” Just 100 copies of each print is being made available to buy. Each one comes with a certificate of authenticity. They are available now from: www.dirtystopouts.com The artworks will be on public display in the Moor Market in units 68/70 that face the café area.
As convenient as they are indulgent, we have a wide range of electric, power, mixer or thermostatic showers plus a wealth of complete shower enclosures, cubicles and doors

Charity snowflakes add sparkle to Crystal Peaks Christmas THEY’RE not exactly dreaming of a White Christmas at Crystal Peaks this year…but they will definitely be seeing snowflakes! The Children’s Hospital Charity’s famous snowflakes will add a little extra Festive sparkle to the award-winning shopping centre throughout the Festive period.. Every year, more than 250 sponsored snowflakes decorate the exterior of Sheffield Children’s Hospital, with businesses, schools, community groups and thankful families raising more than £250,000 for The Children’s Hospital Charity. And this year, for the third year running, up to 40 further giant snowflakes will also decorate the exterior of Crystal Peaks, forming an essential part of the Festive decorations at the shopping centre. “We are delighted to be joining The Children’s Hospital Charity again for this great Christmas campaign,” said Crystal Peaks centre manager Lee Greenwood. “Crystal Peaks sees itself as very much at the heart
of the community and Sheffield Children’s Hospital touches the lives of so many people every year. “We hope that our visitors will enjoy seeing the snowflakes and will want to support this outstanding city charity as much as we do.” Sophie Coburn, Corporate Partnerships Officer at The Children’s Hospital Charity, added: “We are so proud to have the support of Crystal Peaks for the third year running as we continue our longstanding partnership together. “Our award-winning snowflake appeal has raised over £1m for Sheffield Children’s, bringing people together with a shared goal to build a better future for our staff, patients and their families. “Thanks to the support of places like Crystal Peaks, our snowflakes will be seen in more places and by more people than ever before this Christmas. “On behalf of everyone at Sheffield Children’s, I’d like to say a huge, heartfelt thank you for all your support.”
Transforming Castlegate The £20million funding will be used to initiate three new projects to transform under-used areas of the city centre, also celebrating Sheffield's cultural and arts scene. The River Sheaf will be deculverted, making Castlegate a focal point of the city centre, introducing new greenery and public spaces, creating an attractive area for people to visit. The land around the site will also be prepared for future uses that focus on education innovation and encouraging healthy lifestyles following public consultation. The fund will also help create two new arts destinations in the city centre. Park Hill Art Space will offer a new home to artists across the city, giving the opportunity for creators to work collaboratively, learn and showcase their work in one of the largest contemporary galleries in the north. A six-acre sculpture park will connect the Art Space to Castlegate. Harmony Works, a collaboration between Sheffield Music Academy (SMA) and Sheffield Music Hub will move to a new home in Canada House, giving the organisation a
fit-for-purpose, accessible home in the centre of the city. With a new city centre home, both organisations would be able to support the musical ambitions of children and young people from every corner of the city. It would also provide better transport access for students as SMA and The Hub currently operate from ‘borrowed’ facilities in areas that result in extended travelling time for many of the students. Plans also include a multi-purpose space to allow students and other users to perform to the public.
Plans for Attercliffe Once a major retail and commercial hub serving nearby industry, the area has suffered from economic decline. The second part of the Levelling Up Fund bid is focused on joining up investment in leading-edge employment, travel and quality of life to transform perceptions of Attercliffe, placing it once again at the centre of Sheffield’s most exciting developments. At the heart of the proposal is the development of the Centre for Child Health Technology at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park; bringing together medical professionals, patients, and families to deliver the world’s most advanced integrated health care system for children. This will be supported by investment in wider regeneration
initiatives in Attercliffe including: improving links between Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and the High Street; creating a more welcoming environment and street scene and refurbishing historic buildings in the area to provide a cultural hub and event space on the high street, strengthening Attercliffe’s sense of community and pride in their local area. The regeneration of Attercliffe will help to stimulate investment and make Attercliffe a better place to live, work and visit. The funding will also enhance travel routes between Attercliffe High Street and the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, complementing investment in walking, cycling and public transport planned as part of the Transforming Cities Fund. A new cycle hub will be created to encourage active travel and improve links to and from the high street. One of the key elements of the regeneration project will be to provide a cultural hub and event space on the high street, strengthening Attercliffe’s sense of community and pride in the local area.
It is expected that overall delivery of the projects covered by the funding will be in 2024.

tenants tackle climate change issues police nominated for bravery awards Tenants from across Yorkshire have come together to publish new advice on tackling climate change in their homes and neighbourhoods. The first of its kind, the Social Housing Tenants’ Climate Jury saw 30 social housing tenants from across the North of England come together to discuss how climate change impacts their lives. It makes recommendations on how tenants, social housing providers, and others could work together to tackle climate change in their homes and neighbourhoods. The overarching theme of the Jury was to explore how to tackle, in homes and neighbourhoods, the incredibly challenging and complex issue of climate change. The jury’s recommendations underline the sense of urgency felt by the group on the need for action. The tenants’ work also offers suggestions as to how communication with tenants can be made more honest and transparent, how the social housing sector can be upfront on the costs of and potential disruption caused to tenants by retrofit, and the value placed on collaboration across the region. The process saw 7500 social housing tenants invited to apply, of which 30 tenants came together, reflecting the diversity of the population of tenants from across housing associations in the North of England. The jury met over ten sets of three-hour sessions and worked hard, listening to each other and sharing experiences and opinions. To help them with their task, they received presentations from nineteen expert ‘commentators’, housing association representatives, and tenants sharing lived experiences. Homes account for around one-quarter of the North’s carbon emissions. To meet the challenge of reaching net zero carbon emissions, over one million social rented sector homes across the North will require retrofit measures, and the sector is likely to be a retrofit early adopter. The percentage of carbon emissions coming from Yorkshire’s homes is 24%, and retrofit works will be required to the vast majority of the region’s 424,054 council and housing association properties. Sharon Wood, from Wakefield, juror, and Yorkshire Housing tenant said: “Just like everyone, I’ve really enjoyed taking part in this Social Housing Tenants Jury. It has certainly opened my eyes. I’ve learned a lot, and I’d like to learn a lot more. It’s been nice to hear from such a variety of people, and I think, on the whole, we’ve respected each other’s spaces, and when we wanted to speak. I really enjoyed listening to all the commentators. I found it absolutely enthralling. I need to find something else to do on a Tuesday evening now. The facilitators did a great job of keeping us all in check and encouraging us all to think outside the box.”

The Social Housing Tenants’ Climate Jury was commissioned by the Northern Housing Consortium in partnership with five housing associations: First Choice Homes Oldham, Karbon Homes, Salix Homes, Thirteen Group, and Yorkshire Housing. The jury’s top ten most popular recommendations are summed up in one or two sentences*: 1. There is a need to take into account the urgency of the issue of climate change, and installation programmes need to be quicker. 2. Housing associations need to work with contractors to ensure work is completed to the highest standard. An independent person or body to be appointed as a point of contact for tenants, to provide oversight to work, to hold parties to account & mediate any issues. 3. Because retrofit could be very disruptive, tenants need to have clear and timely information about timescales and cost. 4. The best quality of technology should be used. 5. Housing associations need to ensure good communication with tenants before, throughout and after any work carried out. 6. Housing Associations should collaborate with each other and Local Authorities, and other agencies. 7. Raise awareness with everyone in our communities about how we can tackle climate change through a range of communication channels. Communication must use clear, accessible language at all times. 8. People in care homes, older and vulnerable people should be made aware of what is happening. Good, clear information should be provided in a format they can understand. 9. Housing Associations should employ a local dedicated person to work with the community to open the community centres and develop the green spaces -ensuring that people are more informed about the spaces, having a more connected approach and access to the facilities. 10. The housing associations should be proactive in training and employing their own skilled workforce necessary to complete the work within timescales by 2050 and to allow for any repairs and replacements. Many authorities, agencies, and organisations worldwide have started to recognise the importance of involving members of the public in helping make important and difficult climate decisions. Consisting entirely of tenants living in social housing in the North of England, the Jury places their voice at the heart of the collective challenge of tackling climate change. Tracy Harrison, chief executive of Northern Housing Consortium, said: “We brought together a group of 30 tenants from across the North of England to put their voice right at the heart of the debate on one of the biggest issues we face as a society. It was a rigorous process designed to ensure fairness. Tackling climate change will require big changes to homes and neighbourhoods - through the Jury process, social housing tenants have given clear guidance on what they want to see happen in what are, after all, their homes and neighbourhoods. We are hugely grateful for the support of our partner housing associations, but most of all to the Jury of tenants who have created these substantial and important recommendations.” The process was designed and facilitated by the social enterprise Shared Future. The report explains the process followed and, in their own words, the Jury’s conclusion responding to the Jury question in the form of a statement and a series of recommendations. The Northern Housing Consortium, as a membership organisation representing the views and interests of housing organisations in the North of England, sought to bring together partner housing associations to place the voice of tenants at the heart of the collective challenge of tackling climate change.
Two South Yorkshire Police officers who heroically rescued a woman and her three children from a smoke-filled building which was on fire have been nominated for The National Police Bravery Awards. PC Emma Addis and PC Luke Bugdol were attending an incident in Masbrough in Rotherham in August 2020 when PC Addis noticed smoke billowing from the stairwell of a nearby block of flats. The officers ran over and located a fire outside the door of a ground-floor flat. PC Addis and PC Bugdol were concerned there could be occupants trapped inside the flat and that smoke was rising to the flats above. They attempted to put out the fire with fire extinguishers from their vehicles, but it had no effect. In poor visibility and choking on the smoke, the officers continued up to the landing, attempting to get occupants out of the first-floor flat. PC Bugdol forced open the door to the flat and safely evacuated the occupants – a woman, her four-week-old baby and two other children – by protecting them with towels. PC Addis carried the baby and escorted the woman, while PC Bugdol carried both older children over his shoulders. The woman and her children were unharmed. When a supervisor arrived at the scene, both officers were suffering the effects of smoke inhalation, struggling for breath, coughing excessively and vomiting. They were triaged by paramedics at the scene and given pure oxygen, before being taken to hospital, where they were given more oxygen and had their bloods taken. They were advised to rest for at least four days and told to expect to be coughing for the next three weeks. South Yorkshire Police Federation Chair Steve Kent said: “What heroes our colleagues are. Police officers are much more than crime fighters and once again this incident clearly demonstrates this – running towards the danger to save people’s lives. Emma and Luke selflessly rushed into a smoke-filled building to save a family, including a tiny baby. They were physically sick following the incident so it shows the toll such acts can have on officers and what we do for the public we serve. Well done to both officers for their courageous actions. We are very proud of them and they are worthy nominees for The National Bravery Awards.” As well as being nominated for The National Bravery Awards, both officers received the South Yorkshire Police Force Award for Bravery 2020, and the Rotherham District Commander’s Commendation 2020. The National Police Bravery Awards honour officers from across England and Wales who have performed outstanding acts of bravery while on or off duty. As nominees, PC Addis and PC Bugdol will attend an awards ceremony in London on 9 December 2021.

church wins award
A Sheffield church that helped deliver groceries to vulnerable people during lockdown has received £1,500 prize money in a national competition. St Gabriel’s Church in Greystones, Sheffield was chosen as the regional winner for the North region – earning themselves £1,500 to support the church’s work in the community. In October 2020 the church launched its Bless Greystone initiative to help build relationships with local people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The church teamed up with a local business to deliver groceries to those who were self-isolating, vulnerable or elderly. Amongst other things, the church gave well-being packs to every member of staff at the local school, sent Mothers’ Day gifts to local women, did some gardening to spruce up the nearby medical centre, and held a free film and pizza night for primary school pupils so that their mums and dads could enjoy a night out. Nearly 60 children then came to a holiday club in the summer. Catherine Stevenson, co-ordinator of Bless Greystones and wife of church Vicar Alistair, said: “Bless Greystones started around October last year – we were several months into the pandemic, it was a very difficult time and we realised that there were needs we could help to meet. We’re a small and welcoming church to those who come through our doors, but there are obviously many local people who don’t come through our doors, and we wanted to show the love of God to them in a practical way. We’re thrilled to have won and will work with the PCC to decide how we can best use the funding to support the community.” Over 60? Bored with staying in or the same weekly routine?

Budget’s historic change to way beer is taxed The Night time industries recognises that pubs are a force for good Changing the tax system to better support pubs can help the Great British local thrive – but more pubs, breweries and drinkers should be able to benefit, say CAMRA. Responding in full to yesterday’s Budget announcements, CAMRA National Chairman Nik Antona said: “The Chancellor has listened to thousands of CAMRA members who have long called for a change in the way alcohol is taxed. A new, lower rate of duty for draught beer and cider served in pubs and clubs establishes an important principle in the taxation system – that pubs are a force for good in our communities and should be supported to help them survive and compete with the likes of supermarkets. “Our task before this new duty rate is implemented in 2023 is to make sure that the new, lower draught duty rate applies to beer and cider served in smaller containers too, so
that as many pubs, breweries and consumers as possible can benefit. We will be using the Government’s consultation on how this new system should operate in practice to make this case. “In the meantime, measures like duty freezes and a 50% cut in business rates in England for another year will be welcomed. Our pubs and breweries are still recovering from the pandemic, face rising bills and costs and will continue to need as much support as they can get so they can rebuild their businesses and thrive in the years to come. “Cutting tax for lower ABV drinks will incentivise lower strength alcoholic drinks, whilst new financial support for smaller producers – including cider producers – and
continuing discussions around a 50% minimum juice content are encouraging news for both cider makers and consumers. These measures should help to improve quality and choice at the bar. CAMRA will continue to engage with the Government on the planned reforms to Small Brewers Relief and call for a solution that doesn’t require some of the smallest breweries to have to pay more tax.”
association responds to last weeks’ budget
Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA), commented: “Today’s Budget had some important announcements that will enable the hospitality sector to continue to drive the economic recovery. “The announcements on business rates relief for hospitality, the simplification of Alcohol Duties, and the cut in duty for draught beverages will be welcomed by thousands of businesses in the night time economy. This sector was devastated by the pandemic, with many businesses sadly not making it through, but the resilience we have shown to this
point has been incredible. Despite this, businesses are still suffering from increased operating costs and with the potential for interest rates to go up being very problematic, as so many having taken on debt during the pandemic. To these businesses, the announcement’s today will be important in allowing them to continue to support the wider recovery and ensuring a limit to the extent of increased prices being felt by consumers.
“Of course the improved forecasts for growth announced by the Chancellor today are good news, and the reopening of the night time economy has been a key part of this better-than-expected bounce back. We were disappointed that the Chancellor chose not to extend the 12.5% rate of VAT on hospitality – this is a missed opportunity, and it will prevent those forecasts from improving further still.”

BLADES frustrated by tangerines Frustration in the dressing room United’s inconsistency continued in front of a frustrated Bramall Lane crowd on Saturday afternoon. Despite having more possession and territorial advantage, Blackpool scored the only goal of the game late in the second half with Keshi Anderson curling into the top corner., Boss Jokanović made one change, McBurnie dropped to the bench and was replaced in the starting line up by Gibbs-White, who was available again following a one-match ban. The Seasiders had a couple of familiar faces in their travelling contingent, Stuart McCall is their assistant manager and Gary Madine started in attack. After a slow start, the first chance saw Norwood fire over following a botched attempt to play out from the back by the visitors, whilst on 11 minutes United had the ball in the net but it coincided with the raising

of a linesman’s offside flag - Ndiaye flicked home Fleck’s deep cross but the celebrations were cut short. Blackpool’s first attempts saw Yates fail to turn in Husband’s cross and Bowler’s free-kick almost caught everyone out but Olsen moved his feet quickly to push the ball around a post. As the first half wore on, United got on top and a couple of moments of brilliance almost put the home side ahead. Firstly, a fantastic turn by Ndiaye set up Mousset, but his shot was weak and then, on 38 minutes, Gibbs-White threaded a pass through a number of defenders but Ndiaye’s first time effort was just wide. The second half was just 11 seconds old when visiting goalkeeper Grimshaw saved at his near post from Gibbs-White following a break down the right. Four minutes later, Grimshaw excelled again, keeping out
weekend slot to be played Monday 20th December 2021, kick-off 7.45pm at Craven Cottage. United will now play back-to-back Monday nights in December following the recent announcement that the home clash with Queens Park Rangers will take place Monday 13th December, kick-off 7.45pm. Meanwhile, the New Year’s Day clash against Neil Warnock’s Middlesbrough has also been chosen for live coverage by the UK broadcaster. The fixture on Saturday 1st January, will now kick-off at 12.30pm rather than the traditional 3pm start.
another from Gibbs-White, whilst Blackpool had barely recovered when a snap-shot from Mousset struck the crossbar. Blackpool weathered the storm, although the Blades continued to dominate the ball. A deflected Anderson shot just after the hour caused problems following a rare attack. On 72 minutes, pin-point balls from Norwood and Stevens set up McGoldrick, on as substitute, but his
goal-bound effort was blocked by Keogh in front of the Kop. Blackpool, however, were seeing more of the ball and there was a warning shot from Carey before the visitors took the lead on 76 minutes. From goalkeeper Grimshaw’s long boot, Anderson managed to evade United’s offside calls and steadied himself before curling into the top corner in front of the travelling fans.
Sharp had already been introduced and McBurnie came on after the Blackpool goal to add to the offensive options but the home side finished with just 10 men when Davies limped off, all substitutions having been used. Five added minutes saw United have the majority of the ball but there were no clear opportunities before the visitors left the Lane with the points.
OWLS FESTIVE FIXTURES CHANGE
moving from Boxing Day to Monday 27 December. The Owls’ first game of the New Year away at Shrewsbury has been moved to Sunday 2 January (3.00pm). The clash at Montgomery Waters Meadow was
originally scheduled to take place on New Year’s Day. With Wednesday’s trip to Sunderland now pencilled in for Thursday 30 December, our clash with the Shrews will also be put back by 24 hours.
The Owls’ trip to Sunderland over the festive period has been pushed back 24 hours. The League One clash on Wearside was scheduled for Wednesday 29 December but now moves to Thursday 30 December, kick-off 7:45pm. The switch comes as a result of the Black Cats’ visit to Doncaster being selected for live TV coverage,
Frustration was the name of the game for Darren Moore as a stoppage time goal from Matty Blair denied the Owls victory at Cheltenham. Wednesday were on course for a welcome win after Blair’s own goal gave the visitors a late advantage following earlier strikes from Kyle Vassell and Chey Dunkley. But Blair popped up at the last to make amends and leave the Owls ruing what might have been. He told swfc.co.uk: “It’s

frustration for me and frustration in the dressing room. We’ve got in front and we should’ve held on but it’s a set play at the end that they’ve equalised from. “We’ve scored two set plays but conceded a set play right at the end so that’s the frustrating thing. “Just before that we’ve had a breakaway three on one situation and I will look back at that and think it’s game, set and match if we score that. “We finished the game with two recognised defenders,
the substitutions we made were positive to try and win the game.” Moore issued an update on Dominic Iorfa, who sat out the Robins clash with an injury sustained at Middlewood Road in midweek. He added: “Dom picked up an ankle injury in training and didn’t travel today. We will assess him before the Sunderland game on Tuesday. “He’s 50/50 right now, I would say.”

blades thump owls in u23 derby Wednesday’s Under-23s were defeated 3-0 by Steel City rivals United at Bramall Lane on Monday evening. There were positives to take for the Owls from the derby clash with Massimo Luongo and George Byers getting a vital 45 minutes in the tank as they continue their roads to recovery. The early throes were even as both sides looked to break the deadlock, but the hosts drew first blood with nine minutes on the clock. Joe Starbuck found space on the right flank and crossed for Regan Slater who executed a stunning first-time volley to find the far corner. Soon after the restart, Korede Adedoyin saw a speculative effort from range dip over Marcus Dewhurst’s crossbar. The Blades went back on the attack and Nickseon Gomis’ powerful cross found Antwoine Hackford at the front post, but the striker’s touch wasn’t enough to trouble Jack Hall. Half time arrived and Luongo and Byers made way after crucial cameos for Lee Bullen’s side. The Owls came out quickest in the second period and Paulo Aguas’ cross from the left found Adedoyin, but the striker’s deft touch deflected out for a corner. Despite Wednesday’s pressure, the home side doubled their lead on 58 minutes. Blades captain Frankie Maguire’s solo run ended with an accurate left foot strike which found the bottom corner. United made it 3-0 on 75 minutes when Hall’s clearance hit the foot of the on-rushing Angello Cappello before finding the net.

“I thought we played well today. “I thought we were really good. I was disappointed with the goal that we conceded because we’re obsessesd with the defenders about letting people inside so that was a big mark against us, but apart from that, I thought we played well. “Obviously its nice to score that amount of goals at home. “It was a bit bittersweet for me because I knew Ben Bennett’s memorial was going up on the screen. He was a massive Miller,
Wellens: not good enough
Richie Wellens spoke to the media following the disappointing defeat at Charlton Athletic. Wellens felt his side never got going at the Valley, and were made to pay for a lacklustre performance. On having no excuses: “We didn’t compete, Jayden Stockley won every header in both boxes and had an easy ride. “When you come to a ground where the team you’re up against are in transition, you have to start better than we did. “There are no excuses from us, we were second best and didn’t earn the right to play.
a massive supporter and a great human being. “Him and his family are lovely people so I thought it was fitting that we played as well as we did today. It will make me smile when I go to bed tonight. “We’re trying to be competitive in every game we play in and we try and win every game that we play in. “We try to have as many goal attempts as we can and sometimes you don’t get your just desserts in the game but today was one of those games where we created a few and were fortunate enough to take five of them. “It was a really good win against a good Sunderland team, who are well-coached and organised. “Today was an example of us being at our very best.”
“We gave away silly free kicks, and everything we spoke about in and out of possession went out of the window.” On learning quickly and preparing for Crewe: “They are a good side but we allowed them to be better, all four of their goals have come from us having the ball. “There’s no point in feeling sorry for ourselves, we’ve got a lot of young players that have to realise every game is not the same. “We’ve got a massive game on Tuesday night against Crewe and that is important with a break in league games after it.”
