SOUTH YORKSHIRE will remember This Sunday Sheffield will mark the National Day of Remembrance on 14th November at the city’s war memorial in Barkers Pool. The Lord Mayor, Deputy Lieutenant, High Sheriff & Master Cutler, veterans, service personnel and cadets will take part in a ceremony, join together in prayer, observe a silence and lay wreaths to remember all those that have served and sacrificed. Full details of the event can be found on page 9 and people are asked to please make sure they arrive in plenty of time, all are welcome. A Royal British Legion spokesperson said: “Sheffield

has always been very supportive of our Poppy Appeal and the city always does itself proud in terms of Remembrance Parades. There will be significant Poppy Appeal activity in Sheffield this year, with the support of the City Council, including street collections, and we are excited to see our Poppy Appeal volunteers returning throughout the city this year after Covid curtailed face-to-face collections in 2020.” Doncaster will see the return of an official ceremony at the War Memorial in Bennetthorpe this year, with the traditional poppy wreath laying ceremony and silence returning, followed

by a parade through the town centre for a Service of Remembrance at the Minster from approximately 11.45am. In Rotherham Changes have been made to the traditional parade, which will take place entirely outdoors at Clifton Park on November 14. The parade will begin from the top of Clifton Park at 10.35am and make its way down to the Cenotaph, with uniformed groups, veterans and organisations taking part. This will be followed by a service, led by the Reverend Phil Batchford from Rotherham Minster, with the Act of Remembrance, national two-minute silence and wreath laying at the Cenotaph.

The Magic of Christmas starts at The Beginning For Sheffield Cathedral there’s no better place to start Christmas celebrations than at The Beginning, the Cathedral’s Christmas lights spectacular which returns to Sheffield this year for six nights. The Beginning opens on Tuesday 30 November and runs through to Sunday 5 December. In December 2019 the Cathedral hosted its first ever light show ‘The Angels are Coming’. The event was a huge success with nearly 12,000 children, adults and families enjoying the show. “'The Angels are Coming' was evocative, spinetingling and just wonderful. And to have the rest of the building lit only by candlelight was inspired. I don't think I have ever seen the Cathedral look so beautiful” one visitor said. After this sensational debut the Cathedral’s light show comes back after being postponed last year because of the COVID pandemic. This year visitors will be captivated by awe inspiring illuminations projected across the exterior facade of the Cathedral which will include the telling of the Nativity story. Then come inside and be entranced by an immersive multi-sensory experience with music and lights inspired by the cathedral’s stained-glass windows and enjoy more than 30 beautifully decorated Christmas trees. “The celebration of the birth of Christ signifies new hope.” says The Reverend Canon Keith Farrow, Vice Dean and Canon Missioner of Sheffield Cathedral. “The Beginning represents this in so many ways. It is the beginning of Advent and the anticipation of Christmas at the Cathedral and we want to share the hope and joy of the Christmas story with everyone. Everyone is welcome to start their Christmas celebrations with us.”

Sheffield Cathedral is once again collaborating with award-winning Luxmuralis to bring ‘The Beginning’ to Sheffield. Artistic Director Peter Walker says: “We are delighted to be able to return to Sheffield and present this new adapted work. The people are fantastic and we know the city comes alive at Christmas. We are looking forward to working with the Cathedral again and everyone enjoying the uplifting light show and beautiful music.” The Cathedral is ‘A Place for All People’. This Christmas, The Beginning will be the perfect start to your festive season. Tickets for The Beginning are on sale from www. sheffield-cathedral.org or in person from the Cathedral Gift Shop. Adults: £7.50 Children aged 3-15 (under 3s free): £6 Carers: £3 (contact Sheffield Cathedral to purchase) For all the more information about events at Sheffield Cathedral this Christmas including carol concerts and services visit www.sheffieldcathedral.org

My ex left me because, according to her, I’ll never amount to anything. 15 years later, I have one thing to say to her. Lucky guess.

I asked my wife to rate my listening skills and she said, “You’re an 8 on a scale of 10.” I still don’t get why she wanted me to urinate on a skeleton. What do you call it when a pig loses its memory? Hamnesia. I just saw my wife walk by with her sexiest underwear on, which can only mean one thing. It’s laundry day.

USEFUL NUMBERS

News, Information and Advice

stress as driving returns to normal safe housing for domestic abuse The pandemic sparked a decline in driving, making for quieter roads. And now, as the clocks go back and darker nights and mornings are drawing in, it’s another challenge motorists must face. No wonder, one in ten UK drivers now admit to feeling anxious when getting behind the wheel. That’s according to new research by Confused. com, which found that more than 4.6 million (12%) have had a car accident or a near miss while driving since the pandemic began, which could explain why many drivers are experiencing anxiety at the thought of getting behind the wheel again. In fact, almost a quarter of those (24%) who have had an accident or near-miss said it was because they felt out of practice driving, while almost a third (29%) said it was due to them feeling flustered behind the wheel. While it comes as no surprise that driving levels reduced due to the pandemic, more than a quarter of motorists (26%) admit they hadn’t been behind the wheel for longer than a month since the first lockdown began. In fact, vehicle use has almost halved since the COVID pandemic began. Pre-lockdown, drivers used to get behind the wheel almost five days a week on average. But the research shows this average has dropped to only three days a week now. It’s not rocket science that less time spent on the road will mean drivers will become more out of practice. Similarly, the number of people making long-distance journeys on a weekly basis has fallen by almost two-fifths (38%) since the pandemic started. That explains why more than one in eight drivers (13%) are less confident behind the wheel and more worried about having a road accident now, compared to 12 months ago. But that’s not to say that there aren’t some positives to come from driving less. A fifth of motorists (20%) have said they’re more likely to walk short distances rather than drive since the lockdown. Yet, as the world starts to re-open, there will likely be times when it’s necessary to get back in the driving seat, which could trigger anxiety and worry, especially for the one in twenty drivers (6%) who have said they’re confused about how to overcome driving anxiety. Expert psychologist, Dr Dorn, explains that “anxiety in the general population could be more than 3 times higher during the COVID19 outbreak” meaning that it can “appear progressively as people begin to return to work and social activities”. For those unfamiliar with the symptoms, Dr Dorn says that “typical bodily reactions during experiences of driving anxiety include heart palpitations, increased sweating

CALL 0151 334 2600

and feeling short of breath as the anxiety state takes hold, either behind the wheel or just when thinking about driving”. To try and ease any concern, Confused.com has created a guide offering Dr Dorn’s tips on how to overcome driving anxiety before, during and after getting behind the wheel and how to deal with any tricky situations. The last 12 months have been an ordeal for all of us, and when coupled with the disruption to normal routines, it’s expected that even the most confident drivers would have some nerves at the thought of driving on busier roads again. Almost a third of motorists (30%) say they feel nervous when driving to unfamiliar places, while a quarter (25%) are put off by other drivers speeding. Meanwhile, tailgating tops the list for causing driving nerves, with almost a third of motorists (32%) citing this as the reason for their anxiety. To make things worse, one in five drivers (20%) say they’d be confused about what to do regarding exchanging details with another road user, contacting their insurer, or making a claim if they were to be involved in a road accident now. The thought of returning to ‘normality’ can be daunting, as almost a third of motorists (32%) say they never want to see traffic return to pre-lockdown levels. In fact, one in eight drivers (12%) say they feel less confident driving than before the pandemic started, while one in ten (10%) said they feel anxious or nervous. For many people, driving was part of daily life, but it’s easy to fall out of routines, which has been proved as one in ten motorists (10%) fear their driving skills have got rusty over the last year. In fact, one in six people (16%) have noticed that their elderly relatives are driving less or have stopped driving altogether since the pandemic began. Safety when driving is paramount, which is why motorists need to be in the right frame of mind when behind the wheel. But one in fifteen drivers (7%) are confused about the safest way to calm nerves while driving. The most popular remedies include listening to music while in the car (39%), having someone else take charge on giving directions (17%) and driving with a passenger in the vehicle (13%). While lots of people have welcomed spending less time in the car, it’s important that motorists feel comfortable and confident when the time comes for them to get back behind the wheel. Alex Kindred, car insurance expert at Confused. com, comments: “While reduced commutes and quieter roads have been a welcome change for many, it’s important that we feel safe, secure and confident when the time comes to jump back behind the wheel. “It’s easy for us to feel out of practice when our driving routine changes, but it’s a concern when that turns into a feeling of dread. To help ease this feeling, our guide gives some tips on how to overcome any driving anxiety, and how to respond if you’re put in a tricky situation.”

People who have lived with and experienced domestic abuse in Sheffield have helped shape the city’s latest long-term plan for providing safe accommodation. It will mean that the council will assess and make arrangements for accommodation-based support, provide that support and monitor and evaluate how effective it is over the next three years. Known as the Domestic Abuse and Safe Accommodation Strategy 2021-24, the plan is informed by stakeholders as well as survivors of domestic abuse and required by law under the new Domestic Abuse Act (DA) 2021. Sheffield currently has 37 units of women’s refuge accommodation and 17 units specifically for young women and their children. These are provided by Sheffield Women’s Aid and the Young Women’s Housing Project. There is also a Safe Zones dispersed safe accommodation project that offers support and housing targeted to male victims and LGBT+ people. This is provided by IDAS, the largest specialist charity in Yorkshire. IDAS also provide the city’s Sanctuary Scheme to enable people to get support to be safe in their own homes as well as offering support to people in dispersed safe accommodation provided by the council. The new funding under the DAA means that we are now also working with voluntary sector and other providers such as Haven, START, Shelter, Citizens Advice, Paradigm, Sheffield Mind, Sheffield Futures, SAYiT and Sheffield Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre to improve support to victims and their children to help them on the road to recovery from abuse. During the pandemic in 2020/21 there were 692 homeless presentations because of domestic abuse, and we estimate that this number could increase to somewhere between 618 and 1,350 by 2030. Councillor George Lindars-Hammond, Executive Member for Health and Social Care, said: “It’s really important that we provide these city-wide, high quality support services. It’s what victims and survivors of domestic abuse and their children deserve and need. Thousands of people, including children, are affected by domestic abuse every year in Sheffield and this extra funding means that we can increase the excellent provision that we already have here to make sure they are supported in the right way. Domestic abuse over the past year was highest in the younger age group, 14% of females aged 16-19. There are also barriers for those aged over 60 for reporting domestic abuse and accessing safe accommodation so we must be careful not overlook the older adult age group in the work that do relating to domestic abuse.” Help available To seek support for yourself or a friend or family member contact Sheffield’s Domestic Abuse Helpline (www.idas.org.uk/) on 0808 808 2241

bat boxes a big hit Working together with partners from the South Yorkshire Bat Group and Yorkshire Water, the Sheffield Lakeland team from Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, put up 60 new bat boxes earlier in the year and they’re already proving to be a big hit. A recent survey discovered six of the boxes are already being used by roosting bats, which was more than had been expected that early in the year. But the most exciting news however, was that four different species of bat were recorded during the survey. This is just one of the projects being delivered by the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Project, supported by the players of the National Lottery. This was the first time that bats had been found in the new boxes during the monthly checks, and it was a great surprise to find them being used by so many different species so soon after being put up. It is hoped that the boxes continue to be popular with bats in the area, and that this success can be replicated in other areas within the Sheffield Lakeland area. The species recorded so far are common pipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle, brown long-eared bat and whiskered bat, but it is hoped that more species will be recorded in greater numbers once winter begins and the bats start to look for suitable places to hibernate. Greg Slack from SYBG said “I really wasn’t expecting to get anything other than pipistrelles this early and I thought that initially we’d get one or two bats in one bat box! It’s great to get use of the boxes within a year and even better to get such good use by different species so early on!” There’s also a research element to this project and SYBG are trialling boxes made of a new material. The different box size, box positioning, and even the species of tree that the boxes are put up on is being carefully determined and recorded. The information that will then be collected will help us understand bat preferences and whether these vary between the different species. It may take some time to gather enough data to get a clear picture, but it is hoped that the results will help shape bat conservation work in future. The Sheffield Lakeland team have been working closely with SYBG and Yorkshire Water around their Underbank Reservoir and Brooks Bank Farm to improve habitats for bats, although SYBG are active all around the Sheffield area. There are eighteen species of bat native to the UK, but they’re not often easy to spot as they’re nocturnal and hibernate during the winter months.

DETAILS ANNOUNCED for Remembrance Sunday in Sheffield Barker’s Pool will once again be full of poppies and pride as people gather together at the Cenotaph for the National Day of Remembrance on Sunday 14 November. The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Sheffield Councillor Gail Smith will be joined by the Deputy Lieutenant, High Sheriff & Master Cutler, plus veterans, service personnel and cadets to take part in a ceremony, join together in prayer, observe a silence and lay wreaths to remember the service and sacrifice of those in our Armed Forces and those who gave their lives for our country. Proceedings will start at 10.30am and the service will be complete by 12pm. Local people are invited to come along to the service and can lay poppies or wreaths at the end of the service if they wish to do so. Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Gail Smith, said: “It is a great honour for me to lead this year’s Remembrance Sunday service. It is so important for us to be able to come together and remember together the selfless sacrifices made by our Armed Forces and everyone who has given their lives for our country, so we can live in peace and freedom. “Since buying the first poppy in Sheffield’s poppy appeal, I’ve been wearing it with pride and will do so next Sunday as we reflect on the significance of that little red flower and the words ‘lest we forget’. “I hope lots of people in Sheffield will come out to mark the National Day of Remembrance, remembering lost loved ones and showing our veterans just how grateful we are.” This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the Royal British Legion. Formed in 1921, in the aftermath of the First World War, the charity’s founding mission was to fight for the rights of those who had given so much and come back to so little. Today, with 100 years of

experience, the Legion provides lifelong care and support to all serving and ex-serving personnel and their families. Remembrance Sunday Order of Service - At 10.30am Sheffield Citadel Salvation Army Band commences play, while Services and ex-Service Organisations assemble on Holly Street, where they will set off to start the procession from the City Hall to the Cenotaph at 10.55am. – The Exhortation will be spoken by an Officer from the 212 (Yorkshire) Field Hospital at 10.58am, with the Last Post at 10.59am. – Two minutes of silence will be observed at 11am, followed by wreath laying, a series of hymns, poems and readings, ending with the Lord’s Prayer and closing comments. – The parade will march from the Cenotaph to dismiss at 12pm.

The Sheffield Beatles Project return this Christmas with a very special concert! A December night at the O2 Academy Sheffield is fast becoming a festive tradition as The Sheffield Beatles Project are finally back on stage to celebrate the finest years of the music of The Beatles. The Blue Album is a retrospective collection of The Beatles finest music between the years 1967 – 1970. Songs such as Strawberry Fields Forever, Get Back, Something, Back In The USSR and of course, Hey Jude! There will of course be a few Christmas surprises too as the band return for their first live concert in two years. Previous concerts celebrating the classic albums Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band and The White Album have firmly positioned this live music event as a must see in the Sheffield gig scene. 30 musicians comprising a brass,

string and rock n roll section are delighted to be back to perform live this December as an enforced hiatus of almost 2 years means this concert has been on pause for what seems like forever! Lockdown didn’t stop the activity though as the bands’ lockdown rendition of All You Need Is Love attracted reach from around the world, with over 100,000 people seeing the video in its’ week of launch. Nothing beats live music though, and the band are excited to be back in rehearsals to prepare for the Blue Album retrospective show on December 11th. Dominic Ridler, drummer, says: “We are so excited to be returning to the O2 Academy Sheffield to perform The Blue Album in full this December. We had our first rehearsal last weekend and there

was such a buzz in the room everybody is really looking forward to playing together again. We can’t wait to bring the best of the Beatles to Sheffield on Saturday 11th December!” Whilst Ben Eckersley, musical maestro, adds: “Through three long, difficult lockdowns I’ve been dreaming of the day when we’ll step out on stage to play such brilliant music with such brilliant people again. Our first rehearsal back was a totally joyous experience and now I can’t wait to share it with you all again. I think this will be the very best gig we’ve ever done. Make sure you don’t miss out” Tickets are selling now and can be purchased in person from the venue box office or online from Ticketmaster and Gigantic.

This fantastic show celebrates the music of 80’s super group THE TRAVELING WILBURYS who featured five individual icons Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty & Bob Dylan. who created an album that completely rocked the music industry and sold over five million copies worldwide. With the WILBURYS never actually going on tour perhaps due to the untimely death in 1988 of ROY ORBISON played hear by PAUL HOPKINS. Their fans never got to see them all together in a live concert experience, with that in mind PAUL HOPKINS has joined up with four other very talented singers and musicians who together have formed this incredible tribute show.

TWO SIDES TO THE no joy at the rovers STORY - MOORE United’s trip over the Pennines on Saturday ultimately proved a fruitless trip, despite scoring inside the opening two minutes. Rhian Brewster volleyed home early on to give the Blades an early boost, but Reda Khadra restored parity before half time and in the second period, goals from Ben Brereton-Diaz and Ian Poveda saw Rovers claim the spoils. Boss Jokanović made one change for the clash at a soggy Ewood Park, with Sharp recalled to lead the line as Mousset dropped to the bench, where he was joined by McBurnie who replaced McGoldrick in the 18. On a miserable Lancashire afternoon, United got off to the perfect start, scoring after just 76 seconds. Sharp’s perseverance saw him get the better of Wharton from Norwood ball into the right channel and the skipper then crossed for BREWSTER, who volleyed home his first

league goal for the Blades - a real goal of the season contender. Blackburn responded positively though, and Bogle was booked for halting the progress of the lively Khadra, before United survived strong appeals for a penalty from the home side as Brereton-Diaz went down under pressure from Egan, before the Chile international then had a goal chalked off for offside. Khadra’s free kick was inviting and drew Olsen off his line, but thankfully Lenihan failed to connect. The Blades had their moments going forward, but failed to create chances to double the advantage, as Fleck was cautioned for a trip on Poveda. Basham had to be at his best to stop Khadra, before Lenihan used his physicality to halt Osborn’s progress as he looked to free Brewster. And on 37 minutes, the home side restored parity with the aid of a deflection off Egan, as KHADRA saw his powerful strike wrongfoot a

stranded Olsen. Before the break, United looked to get back on the front foot, but Gibbs-White couldn’t find a telling pass having got in behind Edun, before Bogle saw a deflected effort go over the bar and Brewster dragged an effort wide from a promising position after good play by Stevens on the left. The home side started the better following the interval, but Gibbs-White ensured carried a threat when in possession, but likewise, Brereton-Diaz continued to keep Egan and Basham on their toes. On 57 minutes, United should have regained the lead, Fleck’s ball was inch perfect for Sharp, but Kaminski denied the skipper despite an excellent first touch. But on the stroke of the hour though, Blackburn hit the front. Poveda got the home side moving forward before combining with Travis and putting the ball on a plate for BRERETON-DIAZ who

tapped home having got across his marker at the near post. The game was so open and Jokanović made a positive double change with Mousset and Ndiaye replacing Brewster and Fleck. Gibbs-White was doing everything within his power to get United back into the contest, turning two before just overhitting a pass for Sharp, before Davenport deflected over a low cross from the Wolves loanee over his own bar. But like for their second goal, Blackburn broke at pace through BreretonDiaz with 20 minutes remaining and POVEDA capitilised on some poor handling by Olsen to keep his composure and score on the rebound from his initial effort. There were 15 minutes remaining when United somehow failed to reduce the deficit, Mousset was denied after an excellent ball from Ndiaye, Sharp’s touch was heavy but almost fell kindly for Mousset on

the second attempt, before Gibbs-White fired against the crossbar from close-range. Norwood was booked for a foul on Rothwell, after Lenihan had early been cautioned for dissent. The clock was against United, who were refusing to accept defeat, but Lenihan was brave to deny Osborn after more endeavors from GibbsWhite, but on the counter, Olsen was required to make a decent save to push away a rasping drive from BreretonDiaz. Travis then hit the post for Rovers, before BreretonDiaz lashed the rebound over, but he was flagged for offside by the assistant. Five minutes of added time came and went and unfortunately the game ended in bitter disappointment for everyone in red and white including the excellent away support which was well in excess of 4,000.

John Egan, Enda Stevens, and Conor Hourihane have all been selected to represent the Republic of Ireland in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Firstly, Stephen Kenny’s side will host Portugal at the Aviva Stadium on Thursday 11th November. Three days later the squad will travel to Luxembourg on Sunday 14th November for their final Group A fixture. Rhys Norrington-Davies

Goalkeeper Robin Olsen has been called up to the Sweden squad ahead of their World Cup qualifiers this month. Janne Andersson’s side will travel to Georgia on Thursday 11th November for their penultimate Group B fixture and will then face Spain in Seville on Sunday 14th November.

Rhian Brewster and Morgan Gibbs-White have been called into the England U21 side to face the Czech Republic on Thursday 11th November in a European U21 Championship qualifying game. The Owls and Plymouth must meet again following Sunday’s FA Cup first round stalemate and Darren Moore said there were ups and downs from the Hillsborough clash. The manager was pleased how his side arguably edged the Pilgrims overall, in marked contrast to the onesided league affair at Home Park earlier in the season. On the flip side, though, Moore voiced his displeasure at seeing another fixture added to an already congested calendar. He told swfc.co.uk: “I thought we shaded it over the 90 minutes, certainly

in terms of the chances we created. “If there’s one critique today I would say we could have been better in the final third with the contacts we made. “We limited them to very few chances and when they did create I thought Bailey had his stature back today and the save he made near the end was fantastic. “Then we had a chance right at the end ourselves but it wasn’t to be for either side and we are still in the cup, still in the hat for the next round. “The downside is another game of course and the trip itself which is as long

as it gets going down to the south coast. That means another game in the schedule and as we move towards next week, we will look at the diary and see what we have to change. “But we have to stay positive, it’s another game without defeat against a team that beat us comprehensively in September. “Down there we left too many holes, too many pockets and Plymouth beat us 3-0. We bridged the gap today and now we go again with them a week on Tuesday.”

Loan update as Owls trio return Owls trio Josh Render, Liam Waldock and Ciaran Brennan have all returned to the club. Waldock has spent the last week in training with the Owls first team squad following the completion of his loan with Gainsborough Trinity. The midfielder began his month-long loan stint with Trinity in early September and extended by a further month in October.

Meanwhile, Render has returned from his loan spell with Northern Premier League side Grantham Town, while Brennan has been recalled from his loan at National League side Notts County. All three are eligible to feature on Tuesday evening as Wednesday face Harrogate Town in the final group stage fixture of the Papa John’s Trophy.

Paul Warne talks post-Bromley after his side secured a safe passage into round two of the Emirates FA Cup... “We managed to take the first goal which helped. It was a great goal from Wilesy, although I wasn’t sure if Chieo was offside when the ball was played. “It was a good goal and then I thought our setpieces were a real threat. Freddie got a goal off that and we went in at half time at 2-0. “It might have flattered us. “The second half with the sending off meant that the game was sort of over. “Overall, it was a really professional performance, we kept a clean sheet and we’re through. “What I definitely didn’t want was a replay.

“We could have scored more goals but in fairness to them, you can see that Andy’s got them really well-organised and they had a real threat. “On another day, they could have scored and the game could have taken a different turn but fortunately, we came out on top.” Rotherham United will host Bolton Wanderers or Stockport County in the Second Round of the Emirates FA Cup. The game will be played on the weekend commencing Friday 3rd December, with further details to be confirmed in due course.

and they started throwing balls into the box which made it look a bit tighter. “Our back four and midfield were really good, we were solid enough and limited their chances. “If we’d added to our tally then it would have made our defence and goalkeeper have a much more comfortable end to the game.” On Branden Horton’s performance: “I thought he was very positive and got us up the pitch when we needed it.
