THINGS ARE GETTING FESTIVE IN SHEFFIELD Many of us celebrated differently last year but this year Sheffield City Centre are planning all sorts of things to help get you in the festive mood, starting with the Christmas Light Switch on this Sunday. Sheffield turns up the festive vibes at the Christmas Lights Switch On event taking place across the city centre on Sunday 21 November from 2pm to 6.30pm with the illuminations being turned on at 5.30pm. This year’s event is a little different from previous years as there is a dual switch on from the Town Hall

Square and also at Barkers Pool. There’s plenty of entertainment planned, so take your friends and family along to meet children’s film and TV costume characters, spot the stars from Sheffield Theatres panto, be fascinated by Inka the giant animated polar bear, wander around the Christmas market and maybe even meet Father Christmas in his Grotto on Pinstone Street too. There’s also balloon modelling, storytelling & craft activities, fairground rides and some festive music! The council will be announcing the special guest who gets to

make Sheffield sparkle when the big day draws nearer, so keep an eye on their social media accounts. They’re also going to light up the sky with an exciting firework display after the Christmas lights go on, so pop along and enjoy watching and wandering around the event soaking up the festive atmosphere! The Sheffield Christmas Trail is also coming back to Sheffield city centre from Saturday 27 November to Friday 24 December featuring Brearley Bear in a brand new adventure. After so long without seeing

any of his friends, Brearley Bear is planning to organise a reunion and host a special Christmas party! But oh dear, his party invitations have got all mixed up! This free, interactive fun experience for families to enjoy is organised by Sheffield BID. The Alpine Bar will be joining the Christmas market at the top of Fargate, open from 10am-10pm daily from 15 November plus topping up the festive bars this year, there is a new double decked lodge style bar, The Alpine Lodge, arriving in the city centre for another place to grab a refreshment when

you need it! Again, it will be open from 10am-10pm daily from 15 November... Santa and his elves are busy getting ready to visit the children of Sheffield! They’ll be in their grotto at the edge of the Peace Gardens on Pinstone Street in Sheffield city centre from 15 November - 24 December. Come and visit him and let him know what’s on your Christmas wish list - and if you’ve been naughty or nice! He’ll be in his grotto with his elves between 10am to 6pm weekdays, 10am to 7pm Saturdays and 11am to 6pm on Sundays.

GET BACK, GET BACK, GET BACK TO THE CITY HALL That’s right! With the country at last opening up to live entertainment and social distancing slowly becoming a thing of the past, what better time to celebrate the upbeat mood than by seeing the World’s Premier Beatles Tribute act, the Bootleg Beatles, this December? The show at Sheffield City Hall on Sunday 5th December will include all the hits and more, but also feature a special set dedicated to Let it Be , celebrating the long awaited release of the critically

acclaimed Peter Jackson Beatles documentary The Beatles: Get Back. The set will include a stunningly authentic re-enactment of the Beatles famous 1969 rooftop concert, plus the iconic anthem ‘The Long And Winding Road’ and the album’s title track ‘Let It Be’ . Tracing the Fab Four’s journey through the Swinging Sixties, with every detail forensically observed from the costumes and instruments to their flawless renditions of the classic hits from every era of the world’s

most famous songbook, this is an incredible experience. But it’s not only their sound that is authentic; they bear an uncanny resemblance to the Fab Four. As one reviewer said, “It’s not John, Paul, George, and Ringo ... but you simply won’t believe it”. Since their inception in 1980, the band have performed thousands of gigs across the globe, earning themselves an amazing reputation along the way. The late Sir George Martin himself described the Bootleg Beatles experience as “A terrific

show”, whilst The Daily Telegraph said simply, “Less a Tribute more a reincarnation”. The Bootleg Beatles truly

offer mindboggling authenticity - this show is an absolute must for Beatlemaniacs of all ages!

USEFUL NUMBERS

News, Information and Advice

big cash boost for local businesses sheffield castle Local businesses in Sheffield are to benefit from £865,000 investment in high streets. Sheffield City Council has announced further projects which will be supported by its Economic Recovery Fund, an innovative and unique grant set up to support businesses following the Covid-19 pandemic. Businesses in Hillsborough, Firth Park, Walkley and Broomhill came together to form their own proposals and have won £200,000 each for their areas to support a range of activity from improving streetscene and creating new seating areas to creating arts trails and shutter art, markets and new events to attract people down to local high streets. In addition, Station Road Chapeltown Business Forum has successfully bid for £50,000 to support their area, kicking off with Christmas lights and a celebratory event. It also aims to create new seating and signage in the area. A group in Totley also won £15,000 to provide seating and bins to make the area more accessible and encourage people to keep the area tidy. All of the areas are focused on reinvigorating and encouraging people back to their high streets and supporting local businesses this holiday season and beyond. This announcement follows the successful completion of the first phase of the Fund’s delivery – a set of events that were part of the Council’s award nominated Summer in the Outdoor City programme. Councillor Paul Turpin said: “Small, local business are the life blood of our local economy. We are determined to help them get back on their feet after the tough time they have had since the beginning of the pandemic. Being part of the decision-making process for the fund I have been really encouraged by what’s been achieved so far and I am looking forward to seeing what else is in store. I am delighted at the way businesses have worked together for the benefit of their local areas and I am excited to see their plans come to life, especially in the run up to Christmas. If I have one message to residents it is to please support Sheffield businesses to get through this period by shopping local. It really is use it or lose it.” Emma Marshall, member of the Economic Recovery Fund Steering Group, said: “Being part of the Steering Group for the Economic Recovery Fund, it has been incredible to see the hard work and passion businesses have for their areas shine through, as well as the dedication of council teams to make this happen for them. I hope that people will repay that effort and dedication with a visit to their local high street in the run up to Christmas and beyond as the need for support will continue into next year.

CALL 0151 334 2600

We know January and February can be really lean months for businesses, so making local shopping choices now will build resilience into businesses later.” As part of their proposals, the teams in Hillsborough, Firth Park, Walkley and Chapeltown want to kick off with special Christmas celebrations. There will be a combination of newly installed Christmas lights and trees, markets, late night openings, entertainment, trails and numerous offers across all four areas. Chris Beech, owner of Beeches of Walkley said: “The funding from the Council has been a fantastic opportunity for businesses on Walkley High Street. It’s been such a tough year but we’ve all come together to fight for our area and make sure we are attracting customers that are so badly needed, particularly in the run up to Christmas. We want to make sure Walkley retains its independent, vibrant feel and we are aiming to enhance and build on this reputation in the coming year – culminating in the re-launch of the Walkley Festival next summer. We hope people will come down to visit our great offer and see what we’re all about.” This is a particularly special time for Hillsborough, as they welcome back Christmas lights in the area for the first time in a quarter of a century. Janine Lawson, lead for the Hillsborough Together Regeneration Project, said: “The project team has put so much work into this proposal and it is a joy to be able to announce that we’ve been successful in our bid to the Economic Recovery Fund. Hillsborough has such a great offer across retail and hospitality, I really hope the events and lights we have planned for Christmas reintroduce residents, both local and further afield, to this area and encourages them to shop with us and help bring back the buzz we all want to see. We’ve worked so hard to get to this point I would ask people to please come down and support us – our residents and customers are why we do what we do. This project is our way of giving back to our area.” Councillor Julie Grocutt, Sheffield City Council Deputy Leader said: “Being involved in this process has reminded me how much our local economy relies on committed, local businesses to deliver vital services to our communities. Small business owners have had to face the most incredible challenges over the past year but have stepped up valiantly. The Economic Recovery Fund is a way that the Council can offer its support. We’ve not wanted to dictate to local areas and instead have given space for those with ideas to come forward. It’s been an experience we have learned so much from, but the focus now is on getting all of these ideas in place on the ground and looking forward to a happy, festive season and a much better year ahead. That will rely on all of us to shop locally where we can rather than doing what might feel like the easy option.”

From the Arctic Monkeys to the quality of its steel, the city of Sheffield is known around the world for its musical and industrial heritage. However, its long-lost castle – which was once among the most powerful political and cultural centres in medieval England – deserves a place in the history books as well, according to archaeologists. In Sheffield Castle: Archaeology, Archives, Regeneration, 1927-2018, written by Professor John Moreland from the University of Sheffield’s Department of Archaeology, Professor Dawn Hadley from the University of York’s Department of Archaeology, and Ashley Tuck and Mili Rajic from Wessex Archaeology. the castle’s impressive history – largely unknown or ignored up until now – is brought to light for the first time and is placed right alongside some of Britain’s greatest castles. This new, definitive account reveals that Sheffield Castle played a major role in local, national and international affairs in the medieval era, and shaped the development and topography of modern day Sheffield. Importantly, the book is available as an Open Access monograph, free to read online or download. The archives on which the book is based will also be freely available via the Archaeology Data Service. The team behind the book believe this material belongs to the people of the city and they are now able to share it not only with the local community but globally, bringing new audiences to this historical place. Now the archaeologists are calling for the castle and Sheffield’s significance in the Middle Ages to contribute to a new identity for the city, which can be celebrated in the redevelopment of the Castlegate area of Sheffield city centre. The team is working with Sheffield City Council to explore how best to use the city’s new-found medieval heritage in future regeneration. Professor John Moreland from the University of Sheffield’s Department of Archaeology said: “Sheffield is seen by most people as the Steel City, but what our research makes clear is that the city has a deep history that dates right back to the Middle Ages. Unfortunately since the castle was largely destroyed following the English Civil War and multiple developments have been built on its site ever since, this rich medieval history of the city has largely been forgotten or ignored. While we should certainly celebrate the city’s rich industrial heritage, our studies have revealed Sheffield’s importance on the national and international stage, well before the steel boom. This deep history reveals the persistence of Sheffield as a place of some importance over centuries. With the Castlegate area of the city being earmarked for redevelopment, we now have a once in a lifetime opportunity to use heritage as a resource to redefine Sheffield’s identity not just as a place with a rich industrial heritage but also as a city with a deep history reaching back into the Middle Ages. This rich heritage is the key to a regeneration of Castlegate which is both imaginative and ambitious.” Professor Dawn Hadley from the University of York’s Department of Archaeology added: “Our analysis of the archives from the 20th-century excavations has enabled us to tell the story of the changing contexts in which urban excavation has been conducted over

We show how archaeological priorities and methods have changed, as have the regeneration agendas with which the archaeologists were engaged from the 1920s onwards. We have digitised the archives and made them freely available to all via the Archaeology Data Service, safeguarding their future for generations to come; we hope researchers and members of the public across the world will be inspired to find their own stories in the archives. We are also delighted to publish the book open access, free to read online and download, enabling university-led research to reach the widest possible readership.” Milica Rajic, Sheffield Castle project manager said: “Sheffield Castle has been one of our most exciting projects over the past few years – it’s rare to have the opportunity to uncover the history of a monument deeply ingrained in the city’s identity. Through our excavations we have been able to offer a more coherent narrative for the castle, adding to a long history of investigation on the site, and finally reveal answers to some of the burning questions and longheld myths surrounding it.” Ashley Tuck, Sheffield Castle site director, added: “We now have evidence to support the presence of a motte, and we know that there was activity on the bank of the River Don in late11th to 12th centuries. The best preserved remains from our 2018 excavation date from around the 13th century and I was delighted to recover iron smelting slag from this period here in the City of Steel. We are delighted to be part of a wider programme of public dissemination, enabling the community to freely access and engage with their local history.” Sheffield Castle was a Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War. Such was its strength and reputation, Parliament ordered for it to be completely destroyed in 1646. Material from the castle was then incorporated into buildings across the city, such as Bishops’ House, Carbrook Hall and Norton Hall. The castle’s site was later covered by a mixture of steelworks, slaughterhouses and pubs until new market complexes were built in the 1920s and 1950s. The excavations which accompanied these developments were led by a tax collector, a cutler and a local authority surveyor – local people recovering and preserving their own history. The objects and records from these excavations are now cared for by Museums Sheffield on behalf of the city.

POLICE REMIND Parents and guardians of rules surrounding use of e-scooters in run up to Christmas This time next month the people of South Yorkshire will be in the final stretch of Christmas planning. The demand for e-scooters as presents is expected to be high this year, and South Yorkshire Police wish to remind those parents and guardians planning on getting one either for an adult or a child of the rules and legislation surrounding their use. E-scooters, or electric scooters, are growing in popularity. But do you know that you can only ride them legally on private land where you have the land owners’ permission, or on public roads and cycle lanes where there is a governmentapproved rental trial? It should also be noted that there are government-approved models available for use in these trial areas and only these models should be ridden. There are currently no government-approved trials taking

This means that the same rules that apply to motor vehicles apply to e-scooters.

STU’S GUITARS

This includes, but isn’t limited to: • Driving with a licence • Driving/riding with insurance • Driving/riding other than on a road • Drink and drug driving • Requirement to be taxed • Requirement to have a valid MOT • Have to meet construction regulations It is not currently possible to get appropriate insurance for privately owned e-scooters, meaning it is illegal to use them on the road or in public spaces. As stated previously, the only place you can ride a privately owned e-scooter is on private land with the landowner’s permission. It is against the law to ride an e-scooter on any public land. This includes pavements, cycle lanes, beach promenades, bridleways, or any publicly accessible land such as parks and car parks. If you are caught using a powered transporter on a public road, pavement, or other prohibited space you are committing a criminal offence and could be prosecuted. The parents of children using e-scooters may be responsible for any fines incurred from them being ridden illegally. As well as the risk of prosecution if not used correctly and legally, there are also safety aspects to consider before buying an e-scooter for a loved one this Christmas. Some scooters can reach speeds of more than 70mph and can be incredibly dangerous if safety measures are not followed. South Yorkshire Police recommend that riders wear appropriate safety protection, such as a helmet, when using an e-scooter. Riders should also consider those around them and ensure they are not putting other people at risk through inappropriate use, especially models that can reach the top speeds. Grave of former SYP officer awarded Victoria Cross restored The grave of a former SYP officer who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery has been restored thanks to the Victoria Cross Trust. George Wyatt worked in Barnsley prior to his deployment in the First World War and went on to work as a police constable in Doncaster from 1924 to 1932. He died on 22 January 1964 and is buried at the churchyard in Cadeby, Doncaster. Officers from Doncaster attended the restoration on Thursday (11 November), before Rev Amanda Barraclough from St Mary’s Church, Sprotbrough said a few words of remembrance at his graveside. Lance Corporal George Wyatt was one of the first 10 men to be awarded the Victoria Cross (VC), receiving the honour on the very first day of the war. The VC is the highest and most prestigious award of the British honours system. It is awarded for valour ‘in the presence of the enemy’ to members of the British Armed Forces. The London Gazette proclamation for his actions that led to him receiving the Victoria Cross reads: “In Landrecies, France 25/26 August 1914, he was 27 years old and serving in the 3rd Bn, Coldstream Guards when his unit was hotly engaged close to some farm buildings, the enemy fire setting light to some straw sacks in the farmyard. “Wyatt twice dashed out under very heavy fire from the enemy, who were only 25 yards away, and extinguished the fire, making it possible to hold on to the position. Later, although wounded in the head, he continued firing until he could no longer see owing to the blood pouring down his face. The medical officer bound up his wound and ordered him to the rear, but he refused to go and returned to the firing line and went on fighting." His career in policing began with working as a stable hand at Hindlip Hall, West Mercia. On moving to Barnsley he became a police officer, but was called up to serve in the Armed Forces before

the outbreak of the war. On his return, he discovered there was no longer a job for him at Barnsley, so he walked in his uniform to Doncaster and became PC14, based at the Guildhall. George continued to make headlines as a PC, when he was attacked by a prisoner in the Guildhall shortly after starting the job. He also earned an award for saving a woman from a bolting horse in the town, for which he was invited to dinner at the mansion house. Doncaster District Commander, Chief Supt Melanie Palin, said: “It is with pride that we as a police service recognise the contribution of George Wyatt in his role as a police officer and to his efforts during the First World War. “We welcome the restoration of his grave in acknowledgement of his bravery and his receipt of the Victoria Cross. His service to his country and to our communities is rightly remembered." Keith Lumley, from the Doncaster branch of the Victoria Cross Trust, added: “We would like to thank South Yorkshire Police, and in particular its own military veterans, for the support they have given to the trust. “Our aim to maintain the graves of VC recipients calls on the support volunteers and the veteran community along with our own team of veterans. This is even more significant when former police constable George Wyatt VC of Doncaster Borough Constabulary is remembered, and his grave restored because of the efforts of Hollie Stenton, Martin Cohen and their colleagues in SYP. “As a Chair of the VCT and former South Yorkshire Police officer, I am proud to be associated with this project and the officers who have given their time and energy to remember one of our colleagues.”

Countdown to Christmas in Doncaster A magical festive period will be taking place in and around Doncaster town centre through a wide range of exciting events lined up for families and visitors to enjoy, along with local businesses ready to welcome visitors far and wide. Towns and villages across Doncaster will also enjoy Christmas entertainment with roadshows taking place in the heart of communities and will include entertainment, competitions and prizes. The Free Parking initiative has been extended further in Doncaster town centre to make it even easier to buy local and get sorted with all the Christmas shopping. Parking will be free from 2pm at the Markets Car Park and St George’s Car Park until 3rd January 2022 and Chappell Drive will provide free all day parking on Saturdays until 3rd January 2022. The council has also been working with the Police and other agencies on a series of action days and an increase in patrols to make improvements in the town centre so that it is a clean and safe environment for everyone to experience. Cllr Glyn Jones, Deputy Mayor and Portfolio Holder for Business, said: “Christmas was very different for so many people last year and now we are ready to celebrate this festive season and welcome our visitors to Doncaster. “We have a packed programme of events, not just in the town centre, but in our other towns and villages across the borough. We are always working hard to support our business community and it is hoped that the free parking we have on offer, and the line-up of events, will encourage

residents and visitors to buy local and stay local, and enjoy a wonderfully safe Christmas experience here in Doncaster.” Kicking off the Countdown to Christmas is the DN Festival of light at the Doncaster Minster running between 25 and 28 November. There will also be vintage fairground rides in the Market Square and a Christmas trail around various town centre locations from 26 to 28 November. Other Christmas highlights include winter cabins at Clock Corner, that will host a number of local small business retailers, and street entertainment, face painting and more giveaways including books for children (every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 26 November and all week from 20 December to Christmas Eve). The festive period also sees the reopening of Doncaster Mansion House with a series of events on Fridays and Saturdays in the run up to Christmas. On the evening of 20 December the finale event will be carols, a brass band, choirs, dance and illumination around the Christmas Tree in Sir Nigel Gresley Square. A full round up of the events and activities is available at visitdoncaster.com/news/christmasin-doncaster

TRAMLINES FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES FIRST WAVE OF 2022 ARTISTS Tramlines, Sheffield’s biggest city-based music festival has announced the lineup for the 2022 event at Hillsborough Park in Sheffield from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th July. Headlining are Sam Fender (Friday), Kasabian (Saturday), and Madness (Sunday), plus many more acts are unveiled including The Wombats, The Vaccines, James, Declan McKenna, Sigrid, Becky Hill, Reverend and The Makers, Little Man Tate, Shed Seven, Self Esteem, The Coral, Sports Team, Inhaler, The Snuts, Jade Bird, Sam Ryder, Yard Act, Lottery Winners, Coach Party, Kynsy, Do Nothing, Working Men’s Club, Just Mustard, Swim School, Pixey, Everly Pregnant Brothers and more. Over five stages of music, art, performance, a soon to be announced comedy lineup, family friendly area and a genre-spanning lineup of the internationally acclaimed to grass roots talent, 2022 will mark the 13th edition of

Sheffield’s Biggest Party. Alongside this first wave lineup announcement, Tramlines also reveals that Day tickets are now on sale, weekend tickets have already sold out. Day tickets for Tramlines are priced from £50 and can be purchased alongside VIP ticket options from www.tramlines.org. uk. Sign up for ticket alerts here: https://bit.ly/TL22SignUp. Tramlines 2022 takes place following an exceptional event in 2021 where the festival took place as part of the Government’s Event Research Programme. It was the largest festival in Western Europe to go ahead since lockdown restrictions were eased and marked a national celebration of the return to live music. Timm Cleasby, Tramlines Operations Director said, “After the amazing spirit that everyone brought to Tramlines 2021 and how the team delivered an amazing festival in challenging times, we’re all back working hard

to make 2022 better than ever. I honestly can’t wait to be back in the park and having a blast with Sheffield again. “There are so many great bands on the 2022 lineup. Those I’m really looking forward to catching are Sigrid, Kasabian, The Coral, Orla Gartland and James, and there’s some great Sheffield artists that I’ve been looking forward to seeing for a while too, the amazing Self Esteem, the return of Little Man Tate and our friends, Reverend and The Makers to name a few. Then to finish off the party, Madness will be sending everyone dancing back to their house…Tramlines 2022 is gonna go off.” Headlining ‘Sarah Nulty’s Main Stage’ on Friday night is Sam Fender with two Number 1 albums now under his belt. The newly formed but better than ever Kasabian take the lead on Saturday night, while Madness finally get to deliver a long-awaited set following the postponement of

Tramlines in 2020 where they were originally due to headline. Other lineup highlights include James who will be bringing the most festival-ready tracks from their 39-year long career; the frenetic five piece The Vaccines who’ll be dropping classics such as ‘Norgaard’ and ‘If You Wanna’; Americana/alt-rocker Jade Bird; the Norwegian pop sensation Sigrid; and the Mercury Prizenominated Sports Team who make a triumphant return to Hillsborough Park following their appearance in 2019 - anyone recall Alex Rice’s crowd surfing in the Leadmill tent? Ever with its finger on the pulse of breaking talent, the Tramlines 2022 lineup shines a light on some of the most exciting new acts around. These include the gritty indie-folk

artist Orla Gartland who dropped her debut album ‘Women on the Internet’ this August; the melodic, indie-pop rising star Pixey who has just released her second EP on the influential Chess Club label; the guardian tipped ‘one to watch’ outfit Coach Party; and guitaristsinger Sam Ryder who shot to fame with his cover versions during the pandemic resulting in TikTok crowning his the most popular UK artist account of 2020. A Tramlines lineup wouldn’t be complete without a solid injection of Sheffield’s finest. For 2022, crowds can expect homegrown sets from Jon McClure’s Reverend and The Makers; Self Esteem (aka Rebecca Taylor formerly of Slow Club); Little Man Tate in their highly anticipated return since their farewell in 2009; and arguably one of most attended performances of the entire Tramlines weekend, The Everly Pregnant Brothers who’ll bring the power house of parody, charm and sing-a-long vibes. Plenty of up and coming local acts have also been revealed including Bedroom High Club, Luxury

Goods, Sheafs and August Charles. Bedroom High Club are a 4-piece new age indie band who have become firm Tramlines favourites since debuting in 2019. Luxury Goods are the new incarnation of LIO and have just announced a Leadmill show in December whilst Sheafs are riding high following their debut EP ‘Vox Pop’ in 2020. August Charles is a fantastic new vocalist from Doncaster who made his Tramlines debut last year as a winner of the ‘Apply to Play’ competition. This is just the first wave of talent set to perform at Tramlines 2022. Festival-goers should keep an eye out for further lineup announcements, plus further announcements from across the festival site including, comedy and cabaret, family fun, fabulous food and drink offerings and much more. Keep up to date with all the latest news and announcements at www.facebook.com/tramlines.

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury Skipper issues rallying cry ‘Let’s not be the United captain Billy Sharp has fired a rallying cry to everyone at the club as preparations continue for the busy period following last weekend’s international break. The skipper sat down with UTB - United’s official matchday programme - in preparation for the Blades’ return to action against Coventry next week and emphasised the desire within the ranks to turn around United’s fortunes during the next stage of the campaign. After defeat against Blackburn last time out, Billy stated the players all shared the same frustration as the supporters, underlining there is a clear determination within the dressing room to give the faithful something to shout about on United’s return to Championship action. He told UTB: “We obviously want what the fans want. We are trying our best, but we know we are not getting the results at the moment.

UNITED WOMEN DEFEATED IN LONDON

The fans have been great in continuing to turn out in their numbers, like they always do, and we want to give them something to shout about by turning it around in the next few games. “It needs to start against Coventry. I know it will be a great atmosphere here, and we all need to pull together to find some momentum

and if we can do that then Bramall Lane will be rocking like it always is.” With the season about to enter a busy phase with no international breaks until March, Billy is experienced enough to know the Championship standings can change quickly if United can find a mini run of good form. The 35-year-old has called

on all areas of the club to unite as he plots a revival with a flurry of games on the horizon throughout this month and into the hectic December and New Year schedule. He continued: “We want to give the fans something to cheer about in the next few weeks because we haven’t done it enough this season. If

everyone can stick together, get some smiles on fans faces, and start climbing the league then we certainly can still achieve something here.” There is a full interview with Billy in the Coventry edition of UTB, which also includes interviews with Dane Whitehouse and Brian Deane - plus much more.

United Women fell to defeat at London City Lionesses after a second half corner was pushed into her own from Fran Kitching under pressure from the Lionesses attackers. The Blades created several good openings and chances, particularly in the second

half, but were once again made to pay from a set-piece with 20 minutes to go at Princes Park. Head coach Neil Redfearn made just one change with Bex Rayner coming back into the team and both sides found it tough to create too many meaningful chances during the opening 45 minutes. Lucy Watson, celebrating her 18th birthday, was the main threat with a couple of efforts from range while the hosts were also restricted to shots from outside the area, all of which Kitching was equal to.

Auckland unable to continue after taking a knock in the first half, with Jess Clarke returning at the start of the second half. Rayner also saw an effort well blocked before the best chance came for Courtney Sweetman-Kirk as she ran onto Watson’s ball through the Lionesses defence but could only fire wide. Just three minutes later United were made to pay when a corner ended up in the back of the net and the Blades were left needing a goal in the remaining 20 minutes. Watson saw another shot saved from the edge of the box before Charlotte Newsham came agonisingly

close to an equaliser when her effort was saved at pointblank range by Shea Yanez. That was the last opportunity of the game for the Blades as the hosts took a narrow victory.

United had to reshuffle defensively after the break with captain Sophie Bradley-

nearly men’

Darren Moore has urged his players to maximise games they dominate and turn draws into wins. The Owls posted another stalemate on Saturday, this time drawing 1-1 with Gillingham at Hillsborough. And despite bossing the ball, knocking continually on the door, Wednesday had to settle for a point on a frustrating S6 afternoon. Moore said: “It was frustrating and it was disappointing. I’ve said to the players in there ‘let’s not be the nearly men’. Let’s go out there and get it. “The difference is that

ruthless edge, that contact when it matters, that fox in the box, whatever you want to call it. “So I’m disappointed more than anything because we’ve dominated that game from start to finish. Gillingham have had two attempts on goal and scored one of them, we’ve attacked time and time and time again and scored once. “We went after them from the start and with the game I have seen and the figures I have seen, we should have won the game. “Credit to the players for picking up that momentum

when there so were so many stoppages and that was frustrating in itself. It’s difficult when the momentum is constantly broken but it’s part and parcel of football, it’s within the rules.” Moore rued the absence of lead striker Lee Gregory, who the manager confirmed is on the treatment table. Gregory was joined by another absentee on Saturday, defender Jack Hunt. Moore explained: “To lose Lee is a bitter blow because he’s our talisman, he’s been involved in around 45% of our goals. “He’s got a calf injury, he’s having a scan on Monday so we’ll see where we are when those results come back. “Disappointing as well for Jack today. He has a fracture in his hand so there’s no way he could play. Jack is another one we will continue to monitor. “It’s better news that we have George and Massimo back, it’s been a busy period for the medical team, with those two they need minutes on the pitch.”

OWLS DUO NAMED IN TEAM OF THE WEEK Owls duo Chey Dunkley and Theo Corbeanu have been named in the Team of the Week for their performances against Gillingham on Saturday. Wednesday drew 1-1 with the Gills at Hillsborough in a

game that saw Dunkley and Corbeanu stand out from the pack. The Team of the Week is decided by data, presented by statistics company WhoScored.com, giving each player an overall

match rating based on their performance. Centre back Dunkley’s strong defensive display earned a rating of 8.6 to give the 29-year-old his second appearance in the Team of the Week this month. Corbeanu proved a constant threat for Wednesday and

was given a score of 8.0 for his typically tricky display on the wing. The pair’s efforts saw them ranked amongst the top performers in the division at the weekend as the Owls extended their unbeaten run to 10 games in all competitions.

This year marks 100 years since the FA banned women’s football from its clubs’ grounds in 1921. The ban, which wouldn’t be lifted for 50 years until 1971, changed the course of women’s football in England forever. Sheffield & Hallamshire FA want to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the lifting of the ban and the pioneers who kept the women’s game alive, choosing to challenge and overcome in the face of adversity by continuing to play the game on parks, school fields, rugby pitches – wherever they could find. On Sunday 5th December 2021, to mark the occasion, they will be hosting a Women’s Winter Football Festival at St Georges Park Thorncliffe, Pack Horse Lane, Sheffield, S35 3HY. Everybody is welcome, whatever your level of ability or age, and they really want you to attend if you’ve never tried football before or if you are thinking about returning to playing the game after some time away. The festival is the perfect opportunity to turn up and play football, meet new friends, enjoy the on site Christmas market, and socialise afterwards while watching the women’s FA Cup final between Arsenal and Chelsea. The festival is led by Sara Harnett, Women’s Recreational Football Officer at the Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA, and Sara is keen to see current women’s recreational groups attend as well as those that might have never had the chance to play football before. Sara said: “The festival is a great opportunity for women to come together and have fun while also reflecting on the history of women’s football. There’s a generation of women that never had the chance to play football – mums, aunties, sisters, etc. – and it would be great to see these women playing football. “On the day we will be running a football festival with prizes for the winning team, the most spirited team and the best Christmas jumper! So feel free to turn up in your funkiest Christmas sweater! After the festival we will have food and refreshments and there will be a chance to socialise while watching the Women’s FA Cup final.” There will also be an opportunity to find out more about the Stoppage Time Project, which aims to recognise and celebrate women’s involvement in football in and around Sheffield and Rotherham from the 19th century to the present day. To support the valuable work and ongoing development of the project, we are asking all teams to donate £10 to the Stoppage Time Project. The donation can be made via our online booking form. If you want to play your part in marking the 50th anniversary of lifting of the ban, you can register to attend by visiting https://forms.gle/5YzWeXJZDGqnqfSg6 For more information on the Women’s Winter Football Festival, please contact Sara Harnett by emailing sara. harnett@sheffieldfa.com

Everyone at Rotherham United has been deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player Laurie Sheffield, aged 82. The Swansea-born forward enjoyed a short stint at Millmoor between 1967 and 1968 in which he made 21 appearances in league and cup competitions, scoring six goals. The Welsh Schoolboy international joined the Millers during a difficult period in which they made a poor start to the season losing their opening give games, but in spite the team’s form, he managed a golden spell on a personal level scoring in four consecutive outings. His career began with Bristol Rovers and also saw him represent Barry Town, Newport County, Norwich City, Peterborough United and Luton Town. It was with our near-neighbours Doncaster Rovers that he enjoyed his best football, starring across two goal-laden spells - first in the mid-60s and then towards the back end of the same decade - finding the target 40 times in a period in which he averaged a goal nearly every other game. Everyone here at the club would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Laurie’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. Once a Miller, Always a Miller.

Kuleya: a debut to remember Tavonga Kuleya spoke to the media after making his senior debut in the Papa John’s Trophy tie at Scunthorpe United last Tuesday night. The young winger played 82 minutes and provided an assist for Rodrigo Vilca’s opener in the 3-2 win at the Sands Venue Stadium. On how he handled the night: “It was a special one for me, I was alongside some experienced players and they helped me a lot. “The main message was to try and work hard, the assist early on settled my nerves massively. “I found out on the morning of the game I would be

Smith lands Sky Bet League One Player of the Month Rotherham United striker Michael Smith has been named the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month for October. Enjoying one of his most prolific seasons, Smith scored five goals and assisted two others in five games, using his physicality in the box to hold off defenders. His cheeky backheeled goal against Portsmouth underlined his current confidence. Rotherham manager Paul Warne said: “It’s great for Smudge. He’s scored a lot of goals, but as always, his overall play has been fundamental to our success. “It is a weird one because I don’t think any particular player should get a personal accolade as it is a team effort, and this really is as much of an award for the group as much as it is for Smudge. “I think he is one of a lot of our players who are in really good form at the moment and long may that continue. “Smudge does loads of work to keep himself fit and a lot of extra behind-the-scenes that people don’t see. He is more than deserving of Player of the Month, and I think him scoring as many goals as he has, it has possibly pushed him over the edge for this award. “In my opinion, he hasn’t played any better in this month than he has in the others that he has since he signed for us, but it is nice to see his efforts recognised externally.” starting so I was just excited to get out there.” On sharing the occasion with other youth team players: “It meant a lot to have a lot of the lads there that I’ve been playing with at my own age level. “I’m buzzing for everyone to be involved, we were all talking about it and how big a night it was for us.”
