2nd Girlfriend - Hillsborough’s best kept secret! Do you want to know a secret? There’s a great Mediterranean restaurant hidden in the suburbs of Sheffield, serving fantastic food at a great price! 2nd Girlfriend Restaurant offers a superb selection of food, served with friendliness and love, and is now taking bookings for Christmas. Don’t just take our word for it - read some of the Trip Advisor reviews below! Absolutely stunning food, great service. In my opinion the best Italian/Mediterranean restaurant in Sheffield. Well worth a visit.. you won’t be disappointed.

Fantastic restaurant. Food to die for and service second to none. Starters were huge; prawn cocktail from the specials board and Mare Monte from the main menu. I had the Pollo Diane and the chicken was cooked to perfection, not dry and the sauce was amazing! My husband had the fillet steak (no sauce) and that was equally good. No room for desserts although they looked delicious. Chris was very attentive and friendly. Would definitely recommend this restaurant and will definitely be returning

choice . The food and service was excellent. We ordered bruschetta and mussels to start and sea bass and calzone for our mains . Both courses were lovely and reasonably priced . Surprisingly 20% off the Bill so even better! The food was fresh and beautifully prepared and presented . Spoke to the owner who was very personable and clearly passionate about his restaurant and his customers . Would most definitely recommend and looking forward to returning soon . Thank you to 2nd girlfriend for a fabulous midweek treat .

News, Information and Advice

Consultation on Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone Sheffield City Council has opened the final consultation on the Clean Air Zone. The focus of the consultation seeks input into the support available to help people upgrade to cleaner vehicles. Government has mandated Sheffield to reduce air pollution and has given the city £20 million for funding pollutionreducing upgrades through grants and loans. Financial support will be available to help people with polluting vehicles to upgrade to a vehicle that meets the CAZ standard or better. The funding available varies based on the vehicle types and aims to assist small businesses and those who want to upgrade to electric/ zero-emissions vehicles. • For buses, coaches, lorries and other large vehicles, up to £16,000 is available to either retrofit a vehicle or to use towards the purchase/lease of a replacement vehicle • For vans, up to £1,000 is available to upgrade to a compliant diesel or petrol van, or £3,500 for an upgrade to electric • For Private Hire Vehicles (licensed in Sheffield or Rotherham), up to £1,500 is available to upgrade to either a complaint petrol or diesel vehicle, or £3,000 to upgrade to a zeroemissions capable vehicle/electric vehicle Higher amounts are available for Hackney Carriage Taxis to reflect the higher cost of fully

wheelchair accessible vehicles. Sheffield is proud to have a 100% wheelchair accessible Hackney Carriage fleet and we want to protect this. For Sheffield’s Hackney Carriage Taxis: • Up to £5,000 is available towards upgrading to a replacement compliant petrol or diesel vehicle • Up to £4,000 to retrofit a drivers’ current Euro 5 vehicle to become compliant • Up to £10,000 to upgrade to an electric or zero-emissions capable vehicle Owners of licensed Hackney Carriages can also choose to de-license their non-compliant taxi and trade in their plates for £4,000. This improves air pollution by removing highly polluting vehicles from the road. Interest-free loans are also available for Hackney Carriage, Private Hire Vehicle and van owners/operators to upgrade to a new complaint vehicle. Councillor Douglas Johnson, Executive Member for Transport, Climate Change and the Environment at Sheffield City Council said: “This consultation is about supporting small businesses, sole traders and taxi drivers with the £20million available for reducing air pollution through upgrading essential vehicles so that they won’t be subject to the clean air charge. “We are asking for comments so we can work together towards the common good of clean

fury over hs2 u-turn tips to cut plastic waste In response to the Government’s Integrated Rail Plan announced today, Leader of Sheffield City Council, Councillor Terry Fox has expressed outrage for Sheffield and the north, in what city leaders are calling the great train robbery of 2021. Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “HS2 is a once in a generation investment and I am furious that the Government have taken the decision to axe the eastern leg and level up rail connectivity in the North. It is a betrayal. We are digesting the news from today, however I currently cannot see any benefits to Sheffield from today’s announcement. We are England’s fourth-largest city, a major transport hub and when the details of the report began to leak this week, the rumours were inconceivable. As it turns out, the announcement is even worse than the rumours – we are in fact a victim of the great train robbery of 2021. This announcement has many wide-ranging implications. With a national park on our doorstep, two leading universities and an internationallyrecognised hub of engineering innovation, our region is primed to unlock even more potential, and it is outrageous that Government has not taken the opportunity to do so by delivering HS2 in full by overhauling connectivity in the North as it has done in the South.”

In special situations, Sheffield City Council will exempt people from paying the charge. They must meet certain criteria. people are sitting on a £10 million goldmine!

Ever wondered where all your spare change goes? The mystery has been solved - and it turns out that it’s down the side of your beloved sofa. Research has revealed that there’s a suspected £10 million worth of change hidden down the sofas of unsuspecting Brits - enough to feed the average family of 4 for 3,019 years, buy 667 average-price family cars, or pay for 2,086 family holidays.Citizens of ten cities in the UK were asked to rummage down the sides of the sofa for spare change and report their findings - and it’s sofa-sitters in Leeds who are sitting on the biggest gold mine, with an average of £3.07 down their sofas, while those in Brighton have the least, with a paltry £0.32p on average. And, according to the research, the type of sofa you have matters too. Leather sofas were the most likely culprits for eating up those loose coins, with one respondent adding “I think it’s the shiny texture - everything just slides down the side never to be seen again… until the window cleaner turns up and you need change!”. Those with the popular pillow-back style sofas were also more likely to find loose coins, citing the less structured shape as the reason their shrapnel disappeared down the back. On the plus side - or not, if you were hoping for a furniture-based windfall - if you have an IKEA sofa, noted for their Scandivanian firmness, you’re much less likely to have found spare change underneath “It’s basically an adult piggy bank,” said one student landlord who responded to the survey. “Except they forget to empty it - along with the fridge and the shed - at the end of the university year, so I usually end up with at least a fiver when clearing my student houses out.” It seems this landlord isn’t the only one benefiting from the curse of the coin-stealing sofas. Yorkbased barman, Alec, said: “I can easily make £20 a week just from the end of the night cleaning drunk people chuck their change in their pockets, sit on the sofas and it all spills out.”

Gone – Yorkshire’s Long Lost Football Teams Several long-gone South Yorkshire football teams are featured in a new book by Yorkshire sports historian Rob Grillo. ‘Gone – Yorkshire’s Long Lost Football Teams’, charts the growth of the game in the region and covers over 50 clubs from around the county that have, for various reasons, been consigned to the history books. Former Football League team Rotherham Town, predecessors of the current Rotherham United club is featured, as are the former Midland League teams Mexborough Town and Wath Athletic, both of which struggled to compete financially with rivals from towns that were far larger than the ones they represented. The Rotherham club actually started life known as Lunar Rovers, being formed by a group of shopkeepers who were forced to practice in under

The new book details the story of many of Yorkshire’s lost & forgotten football clubs including Rotherham Town, Mexborough and Kilnhurst WMC

moonlight due to their long working hours. The rise and fall of Wombwell’s various football teams are also covered in detail, with the likes of Wombwell Town, Wombwell Sporting Association and Wombwell Main covered in the 330-page book, which is available in both paperback and hard-back editions Other clubs, several of which were linked to the local collieries, are also featured. Those from Grimethorpe, and Upton Colliery, as well as Wombwell Main attempted to compete with the best in local football circles, as well as Monckton Colliery, near Barnsley, which was one of only a few of the clubs covered that didn’t overstretch financially in its attempts to win local league and cup competitions. There are a number of old Sheffield

teams in the book too. Attercliffe, Kilnhurst, and Heeley, the latter being one of the leading lights in the game in as far back as the 1860s, are featured. The club played on a field where it was said that ‘both goals stand on two hills’, and produced an England captain, before making a momentous decision to revert to amateur status. Attercliffe United, a club that had its roots in a local bible class created two of the biggest FA Amateur Cup shocks of all time in January 1924 when it defeated the famous old Northern Amateurs and Stockton clubs in successive rounds, before bowing out of the competition to London club Dulwich Hamlet.

The book features old photographs, maps and other images from times past, further details of which can be found at robgrillo.co.uk, and which is available from Amazon.

New leisure zone planned for Doncaster Wool Market Plans to transform part of Doncaster’s Wool Market into a new leisure zone and games area were unveiled last week. The new active leisure offer will further enhance the vibrancy of the Wool Market which has benefited from extensive work over the years to reinvigorate the venue into a popular place for people to socialise, eat and enjoy events and entertainment. The plans will transform the right-hand side of the Wool Market into a new ‘zone’ which will include: Duckpin Bowling; Dart Lanes; Shuffleboard; reception/ticket zone for entertainment area; and traditional arcade games. Retail traders located in the Wool Market have been consulted on the plans and have accepted offers to move into the Corn Exchange which is soon to see regeneration as part of the Levelling Up bid that we have recently been awarded. Councillor Phil Cole, Cabinet Member for Finance and Trading Services, said: “The Wool Market is a venue that has changed with the times and is a popular location for people to meet, socialise and enjoy its vibrant atmosphere. We are creating a modern destination for families to eat, relax and enjoy alongside shopping in the wider market and town centre. “Doncaster Market is special, with the original market charter being granted in 1193 by King Richard I, but the world of retail has been changing over the last few years with the rise of supermarkets and online retail which has only increased with the pandemic, that is why we must adapt our markets to ensure they survive and provide a mixed and diverse offering across the markets. We are committed to keep improving its offer for residents and visitors.

“We have brilliant market traders, selling top class produce. We are incredibly proud of our markets and committed to supporting them as we bounce back from the pandemic. “With our partners, Market Asset Management Doncaster Ltd (MAM), we are keen to reinvigorate our markets to reflect the changing needs of the customers and support our local traders and retailers to thrive.” MAM have been working with the council to solidify a number of development plans across the markets estates to increase and diversify the

Hayden Ferriby, Commercial Director at MAM, said: “We’re really excited about bringing a new entertainment venue to Doncaster, the Duckpin Bowling being only the second in the country. “Visitors nowadays want and expect much more than just retail, or food, or leisure activities on their own. They want to visit unique destinations that give them an experience to remember and somewhere they want to visit again. “Offering sport and games will attract new customers and visitors and encourage people to stay longer in the market so they can take advantage of the services offered by our traders and grab a bite to eat and drink.”

As part of ambitious plans for the future of Sheffield’s leisure and entertainment facilities, proposals have been approved by the council’s Cooperative Executive to progress a long-term plan for major improvements and investment, creating an exciting leisure offer that will also deliver on health and wellbeing outcomes for Sheffield and our residents. The aim is to improve the quality and accessibility of entertainment and leisure facilities and the customer experience, placing Sheffield at the front and centre of sport and leisure in the UK and contributing to the outcomes in Sheffield’s Move More plan. There is an opportunity for the council to make substantial investment in the facilities that are currently run by Sheffield City Trust. Some of the current arrangements with the Trust come to an end in 2024 and in response, the council has examined the ways in which the city’s leisure, entertainment and events facilities and services could be redeveloped to become as close to self-funding as possible through investment and service transformation, and how the facilities could be managed beyond 2024. The investment, which is estimated at more than £100m, will support significant improvements to the city’s leisure and entertainment facilities, including a complete rebuilding of Springs, Concord and Hillsborough Leisure Centres. The proposal would also see investment into Sheffield Arena and Ponds Forge International Sports Centre ensuring the facilities continue to attract events of the highest quality

for the people of Sheffield, South Yorkshire and beyond. Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield is renowned for sport, leisure and entertainment and our venues host many elite events and high-profile shows. We’re really proud of this but we know that many of our facilities are ageing and are in need of significant investment if Sheffield is to continue to compete on the national and international stage. "Driven by our commitment to putting Sheffield first, our plans present a fantastic opportunity to deliver long-term improvements to health and wellbeing, support the city’s carbon reduction commitments and create an exciting future for leisure and entertainment in the city. “It’s really important that our venues and facilities are modern, accessible and welcoming for all our communities, not just those who already take part in sport and leisure activities. We’re doing this for everyone in Sheffield, so a big part of our work will include talking to our communities about what they want, what barriers they face and what would encourage more people to get out and visit our centres and venues more often. “There’s a lot of work still to be done but these plans provide a long-term vision that will protect and enhance our much-loved venues. I hope everyone can recognise that this is a really positive step and a very exciting opportunity for leisure in the city, and that we’ll see lots of local people get involved and help us shape these plans going forward.”

Cllr Alison Teal, Executive Member for Sustainable Neighbourhoods, Wellbeing, Parks and Leisure added: “The pandemic has resulted in huge pressures on our health and social care services, and we are all fully aware of the contribution that leisure and green spaces can make in improving residents’ health and wellbeing. "To do that our facilities have to be fit for purpose, be places that people want to visit and enjoy when they are there. That’s what we’re trying to achieve here, and this long-term approach is crucial if we are to make a real impact on people’s lives now and into the future.” The work done so far has shown that the most effective and financially beneficial way to achieve our ambition is by working with an external partner to run the facilities on the council’s behalf. As well as approving investment into facilities and venues, the report outlines exploring the appointment of an external provider. Procurement and subsidy regulations mean that the Council cannot simply enter into a further agreement with Sheffield City Trust (SCT) when some of the current agreements come to an end. The proposal is in no way a reflection on SCT and the council will continue to work with the Trust to develop proposals as this work progresses. The report was approved by the Council’s Cooperative Executive during the meeting on 17 November. The report is available to read on the council’s website.

The Leadmill to host ‘NHS Full House’ comedy event with no-cost tickets for NHS workers Tickets for Good will bring some goodness back to their home city in Sheffield this festive season with a comedy event at worldrenowned venue, The Leadmill on 19th December. This event is free for NHS workers with only a small booking fee to pay (£3.50) to secure tickets. This event is being run in tandem with another NHS exclusive show at 21Soho in London on Dec 8th as part of the ‘NHS Full House’ event series. NHS Staff can sign-up

and apply for these free tickets by visiting https://ticketsforgood.org/ nhs/ The Leadmill event will feature comedians Rob Rouse, Allyson June Smith, Pete Selwood and is hosted by Jonathan Mayor. Rob Rouse has ‘comedy guaranteed to lighten even the darkest of moods … always a step ahead of your expectations’ (Edinburgh Evening News) whilst Allyson June Smith is, ‘One of the funniest comedians I’ve ever worked with’ according

to comedy legend Jason Manford. Pete Selwood who recently had his TV debut on ITV’s Emily Atack Show and host Jonathan Mayor is the official tour support for Sarah Milican who describes him as ‘Marvellously wicked!’. Each venue will be filled with NHS workers keen for a night out after a long two years battling coronavirus. With the return of live comedy events dependent on their continued dedication, venues such as 21Soho and The Leadmill are

keen to say thanks with a festive goodwill gesture. Emerging comic talent will be joined by familiar favourites for a joyful, restorative night of laughter for the hundreds of NHS staff promised to attend - at no face-value cost. NHS workers nationwide can sign up to access these free tickets and discounts to major events via Tickets for Good’s NHS-only platform here. Rose Wilcox at Sheffield’s The Leadmill added, “It’s part of the Leadmill’s mission to ensure that Sheffield’s comedy scene is a welcoming place for everyone, so we’re very excited to be creating our first NHS Full House event in partnership with Tickets for Good and the Ticket Fund. Hopefully we can spread some festive joy to NHS workers and their loved ones, and introduce some of the

UK’s best comedic talent to people who might never have visited us before!” ‘NHS Full House’ events are supported by the Ticket Fund, a new project spearheaded by Tickets for Good to encourage businesses of all kinds to support both the NHS and the UK’s worldclass live performance industry with fundraising, sponsorship and one-off donations to put towards tickets for NHS workers to attend high-profile events. With more than £10,000 already raised by WeGotTickets https://www. wegottickets.com/ customers alone via checkout donations, it’s hoped that the flagship Christmas gigs will showcase the tangible positive impact of live events on NHS teams’ mental wellbeing after a tough time.

The London leg of the NHS Full House events takes place at 21Soho on Dec 8th and follows a string of free for NHS staff comedy nights at the venue. This event will be headlined by comedy heavyweights Ed Gamble and Sara Barron. Neil Evans, Director of Operations at 21Soho, remarked: “After such a difficult year for both NHS workers nationwide and the UK’s world-class cultural sector, Christmas is a great opportunity to spread some joy with top-class comedy. The Ticket Fund is a unique way for us to give back to NHS workers and we’re really excited to kick off the festive season with a full house of NHS workers having a brilliant time.”

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury BLADES DRAW A BLANK AT THE LANE Darren Moore: Despite a late flourish, the Blades had to settle for a point in a tough clash with Coventry City at Bramall Lane. Jokanović made changes as the Blades returned from the international break, four in total - some enforced and some tactical. ‘Keeper Olsen missed out, having picked up a minor problem on international duty, Foderingham took over. With Norwood suspended after picking up five yellow cards, loanee Hourihane started in midfield. In addition, Davies and Ndiaye returned to the starting line up with Brewster and Osborn dropping to the bench, where they were joined by Freeman, McGoldrick and Burke. The visitors included former Blades Moore and McFadzean. The opening 15 minutes saw United, operating with a 3-5-2 system, enjoy more of the ball but just one shot each was registered. Fleck

Owls sign MendezLaing Sheffield Wednesday are pleased to announce the signing of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. The winger left Middlesbrough at the end of last season and now joins the Owls. The 29-year-old began his career with Wolves before moving to Peterborough following loan spells with Posh and Sheffield United.

ONLY A SHORT WALK FROM SWFC

made room for himself but fired wide, not troubling Moore, and at the other end, Sheaf ’s punt from outside the box was comfortably parried away by Foderingham. Hamer and Dabo continued Coventry’s strategy of shooting from distance, whilst a dangerous cross from Kane was well cut out by Egan as the visitors attempted to get a grip of the game. The Blades, however, battled and the remainder of the half became a grind, both struggling to dominate. A number of bookings halted the flow and the only effort of note late on was a rightfooter from Stevens, which was wide. McGoldrick was introduced for the start of the second half, replacing Ndiaye, and it was a bright opening from both sides. For Coventry, a shot from Gyokeres was saved by Foderingham and O’Hare thought he should have had a penalty but instead was cautioned for

simulation. United’s good work centred around the efforts of Gibbs-White and Bogle but Moore was not troubled. Foderingham was forced into another save, from substitute Godden on 64 minutes, whilst for United Gibbs-White was inches wide with a firsttime effort from the edge of the box, whilst the on-loan midfielder turned provider as McGoldrick side-footed over on 71 minutes.

In the space of a minute Hourihane whipped in a cross that was dangerous and then fired a shot that had Moore scrambling across his goal but was just wide as there were signs of the Blades getting on top. On 82 minutes Moore was forced into a save from McGoldrick, after he linked up with Gibbs-White and the Blades substitute had another chance soon after, beating the offside trap

Mendez-Laing enjoyed further loan stints with Portsmouth, Shrewsbury and Cambridge before a permanent move to Rochdale in August 2015. The powerful wideman featured regularly at Spotland and after two years switched to Cardiff. During his first season in the Welsh capital, Mendez-Laing helped the Bluebirds earn promotion to the Premier League and would go on to feature 20 times in the top tier. After 92 games for the Bluebirds in total, he joined Middlesbrough in February of this year and now bolsters Darren Moore’s options.

before his half-volley landed in the Kop. Late on, United were clearly on top. On 89 minutes, a deflected Gibbs-White effort was acrobatically saved by Moore and in three minutes of added time saw another former Blade keep the team in red and white out - this time it was McFadzean blocking from Gibbs-White. There were still time for efforts from Osborn and Hourihane but Coventry held out for a point.

Post-Accrington Darren Moore reviews the Owls’ 3-2 win over Accrington at the Wham Stadium on Saturday afternoon:

ON THE GAME I thought it was a good win today, a worthy win. We battled well and used the ball well at times. It was an excellent playing surface, the best I’ve known it to be at Accrington Stanley and credit to them. They’re a club moving in the right direction so it was important to get the three points today. After a blistering start, they had something to hold onto going into the second half with the goal from the set piece, I’m going to have to look at that one from our end. Second half, they had a deflected effort that went in, I think we could have defended that better. But, credit to the boys in terms of concentration and all of them doing their jobs. It was about maintaining in the second half, but we looked threatening on the on the break as well.

ON THE YOUNG PLAYERS

Credit to the young players today, Ciaran Brennan was superb, as was young Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and young Theo Corbeanu. To come into this game with the conditions today, I’m really pleased for them. They’ll become men after games like that today with the experience and understanding of this kind of game. I’m mightily pleased they stepped up with the extra responsibility and performed the way they did.

ON TAKING CHANCES The biggest concern has been getting on the end of chances and, even today, although we scored three, we could have scored more. We need to do more of the same and carry on putting chances away like we did today in the first half. I thought we started well and put them on the back foot and knocked the stuffing out of them which is what we wanted to do. I didn’t feel nervous in the technical area as I felt the

lads were doing their jobs. But given the chances we had in the game we should have won by more in the end. ON BAILEY PEACOCKFARRELL’S FREE KICK SAVE It was a fintertip save and great concentration from him. It was going away from him but when you’re blessed with the frame that he’s got and the reach, that’s where it pays dividends for a goalkeeper. He pulled off two wonderful saves, one in the first and one in the second, credit to him. ON THE TRAVELLING SUPPORT Incredible. I expected to see them behind the goal, but when I came out and looked down the side I was saying ‘that’s our fans as well!’ It was a near capacity crowd today which was wonderful. Credit to the fans, we’re pleased to give them three points to go back to Yorkshire with.

Owls support #HerGameToo The Owls are pleased to announce a new partnership with #HerGameToo, which aims to raise awareness of, and combat, sexism in football. We join a number of clubs from the EFL and beyond to commit to the cause, creating further awareness to the hurdles faced in football by females. #HerGameToo was founded by passionate female football fans who are committed to growing the campaign with the aim of fostering an ethos in football in which women are welcomed and respected equally. The non-profit organisation aims to create awareness, educate, research, develop a strong sense of community and create strong relationships with clubs. Further aims include creating strong relationships with club trusts and communities, having a presence at stadiums to build a more welcoming environment for young girls and women as well as continuing to campaign against sexism in football and online abuse. Victoria Wood from #HerGameToo said: “It’s brilliant to partner up with Sheffield Wednesday, as a lifelong Season Ticket holder myself. “Her Game Too is a movement set up by female football fans with the aim to raise awareness of sexist abuse in football. “We feel it is important to have the support and backing of professional clubs throughout the country, so we are delighted to be partnering with Sheffield Wednesday.” Visit www.hergametoo.co.uk for more information.

Paul Warne praised his side for a hard-earned win on home soil against Cambridge United.. “I thought we started okay but we didn’t sustain attacks. “I’ve been a big fan of Cambridge anyway because I like the way they play but I thought they caused us problems counter-attacking. The two wide men of the three kept getting in pockets and every time we attacked they seemed to break and we were defending. “We went 1-0 up with a great finish from Wilesy, but I thought we were overcomplicating the game a little bit. “In fairness, it could have been 1-1 at half time when they hit the bar. “Good work from Freddie got us a second goal and as strange as this is, you go in at half time you go in and

think ‘it’s not a great scoreline’ because you need that next goal. Unfortunately for us, Cambridge got it and it became a little bit edgy. “All-in-all it was a good game for us to win. “In fairness, if you took every chance you ever created you’d be in the Champions League so I appreciate that the lads are going to miss a few. There were good balls in and we’re trying to score goals, outrun people and outwork people.”

Wellens pleased with effort against Lincoln Richie Wellens spoke to the media following the goalless draw against Lincoln City in Sky Bet League One. Rovers were unable to find a late winner at the Keepmoat Stadium after a tight affair against the Imps. On the effort from his team: “Apart from working the keeper more I was very happy with the way the players performed. “We had players struggling towards the end and probably lacked the cutting edge but I thought the lads gave it everything. “We looked like a team that was scrapping and fighting for every ball which is all I can ask.” On Louis Jones’ performance: “Pontus was ill and Louis has trained really well for the past few weeks, so he deserved his opportunity. “He pulled off a good save in the first half, his distribution and decision making was really good.”
