with the best high street recovery score of the 63 largest towns and cities in the UK in September. Whilst Sheffield is still not seeing the footfall of prepandemic levels, compared to other big towns and cities we are on the up and doing well considering the circumstances people faced during the pandemic. And, it appears large numbers of people chose Sheffield as a destination to visit while the events were taking place. Occupancy in hotels in and around the city rose to 79.5% - making Sheffield the highest scoring northern city except for York during September. At the end of October the African-Caribbean market, the
first of its kind put on in the city as part of Black History Month in Sheffield, attracted thousands of people to the city centre. That week alone, around 180,000 people visited Fargate, with a 30.9% footfall increase, equating to around an extra 30,000 people. There was also a 19.3% increase in footfall at Moor Market, equating to around 10,000 extra people. Cllr Mazher Iqbal, Executive Member for City Futures: Development, Culture and Regeneration, said: “After such a difficult time with the pandemic, the latest figures showcasing an increased footfall in Sheffield are promising to see and highlight
everyone’s desire to get back into the city centre and support small business and community events. “As a council we are committed to supporting economic recovery, helping independent businesses, particularly as they bounce back from the challenges of the pandemic, and maintaining a thriving city centre. We’re proud to host such a diverse event programme that includes sport, the outdoors, music, culture, creativity, heritage and more, and to boast in my opinion an unrivalled and thriving creative industry. “It is fantastic to see Sheffield city centre buzzing with people and events, thousands

A TOUCH OF MADNESS IN SHEFFIELD THIS WEEKEND After being announced as one of the headliners for next year’s Tramlines festival last month British pop giants Madness have set sail on their sure-to-be triumphant return to the road with ‘The Ladykillers Tour’. After 18 months cooped up considering their career options (punctuated by excursions out for critically acclaimed docu-series ‘Before We Was We’ and last night’s magnificent ‘The Get Up!’ more on which later) the Nutty Boys finally get back to doing what they do best - uniting the people for a right raucous live bash. And with a live set teeming with hits from their unrivalled back
catalogue, what-a-tour this promises to be. They visit the Utilita Arena in Sheffield on Saturday (4 December), tickets are available from www. utilitaarenasheffield.co.uk/ . Throughout their career, Madness have had 10 UK top ten albums, 15 top ten singles and have won a multitude of awards including a prestigious Ivor Novello. They’ve performed on the top of Buckingham Palace as part of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations and set the record for the biggest ever audience for the BBC’s Live New Year’s Eve Broadcast - the most watched TV music event of 2018. Joining Madness on The
Ladykillers arena tour will be very fragrant guests Squeeze. Squeeze first formed in 1973, shortly after Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook had begun their songwriting partnership. By 1977 they had made their recording debut and enjoyed a string of hits, establishing the band as not just a passing footnote in new-wave history, but as an important and vital part of quintessential British music. Following solo careers, the Ivor Novello Award-winning duo reunited in 2007 to relaunch Squeeze and have been touring, writing and recording together ever since, returning to the UK
album charts and airwaves with 2015’s Cradle To The Grave and 2017’s The Knowledge. Over the last few years Squeeze have been touring extensively across the UK, USA and Australia, most recently joining Daryl Hall
& John Oates on their North American tour, a highlight being a return to Madison Square Gardens. While staying safe in the UK, Glenn and Chris have both been writing and keeping busy with online activity, whilst looking
forward to returning to the live stage. Tickets for Madness plus Squeeze on The Ladykillers Tour at Utilita Arena Sheffield on Saturday 4 December are available from www. utilitaarenasheffield.co.uk/ .

council calls emergency meeting on transport Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council has called an emergency meeting tomorrow with city transport operators to discuss concerns about disruption to services and to get firm assurance and plans that everything is being done to resume service levels urgently. Following announcements this week of timetable changes on both the Stagecoach Supertram due to driver shortages, and bus service issues due to workforce strike action, the council is calling on the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) and providers Stagecoach and First to prioritise finding solutions to the issues affecting vital public transport services across the city. The disruption follows a series of other service changes that have occurred over the last few months, which have impacted journey times and capacity on public transport, making it more difficult for residents and visitors to get around the city. The most recent changes come at the busiest time of year, when weather conditions mean more people rely on public transport to get around. In addition, First buses, who operate many routes throughout the city, are expected to announce some service reductions in
January. Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Reducing the timetable just as we move into winter and the run up to Christmas is simply not good enough and will leave many people struggling to travel around the city at one of the busiest times of the year. I’ve called for an emergency meeting with the South Yorkshire Mayor, SYPTE, and transport providers to really push home the level of anger and disappointment felt out there. I will also demand that operators return to, as a minimum, the services operated at before these recent changes. A reduction in services like this cannot be accepted as the new normal. It’s simply not good enough. Sheffield Council has worked tirelessly alongside our regional partners to get the government to cough-up £100m for the Supertram network, and we are steadfast in our commitment to the network - but we need providers to step up and deliver a service that meets the city’s needs. We need to see Stagecoach’s plan for fixing this. We will do whatever we can to the support them, and we understand the pressure they’re under, but they need to up-their-game and get on top of this – quickly, we cannot be in this position. It’s the same with our buses
- it is deeply frustrating to be in this position after 18 months when unprecedented public money has gone to operators, including over £20m to First alone. The council has supported the Mayoral Combined Authority to provide major resources into reviving passenger numbers, including committing millions for fare concessions and the ongoing transformation of the network. Whatever the challenges facing operators, a rush to cut services seriously calls into question their commitment to the city. Whilst we must acknowledge the driver shortages it is abundantly clear that the Government has fuelled this situation – due to the ongoing uncertainty over recovery funding and lack of long-term investment plans. Frankly, the system is broken and not delivering for Sheffield. This is why we repeatedly called for the Mayor to start the formal process of investigating bus franchising as a way to deliver the service South Yorkshire needs, and I’m glad that this is now making progress. But more immediately we need some cast iron guarantees from providers about when services return properly, and we will seeking to get these at our emergency meeting.”

Throughout September as part of the Summer in the Outdoor City event programme and going into the autumn, numerous events have attracted large swathes of people to Sheffield, including the Everybody’s Talking About Jamie premiere, the Sheffield Half Marathon and 10k, Castlegate Festival, Pollen Market and much more. Cllr Mazher Iqbal, Executive Member for City Futures: Development, Culture and Regeneration, said: “After such a difficult time with the pandemic, the latest figures showcasing an increased footfall in Sheffield are promising to see and highlight everyone’s desire to get back into the city centre and support small business and community events. council launches cold weather watch
Millions of people in England live in cold homes and Doncaster Council’s Energy Team are on a mission to tackle this across the borough. There is a real concern that with rising heating costs many people will not put on their heating and will suffer the cold. Vanessa Hoyland-Powell, public health improvement officer at Doncaster Council, said: “Fuel poverty is a real issue for many families and households, and we want to ensure that people are aware of the help and support available to them, so that they can keep their homes warm this winter. There are insulation grants and other energy efficiency schemes that we can discuss with people who are worried about keeping their homes warm this winter and we’ve also put a list of common-sense top tips together to help people to keep themselves warm. Sitting and sleeping in cold rooms can cause existing medical conditions to get much worse and increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other life-threatening illnesses. No one should be suffering in this way. Having the heating on in winter is extremely important for keeping warm and well. Here are some other things that people can do: • To keep warm and well in winter, heat your home to at least 18°C • Wear lots of thinner layers, which will keep you warmer than one thick layer. • Try not to sit still for more than an hour - take regular breaks to make a hot drink and move around a bit. • Make sure your house is well insulated and keep out draughts to keep heating costs down. “We are also asking people to keep an eye out for signs of a cold home. Do you visit someone and have to keep your coat on when you are in their house? Are there damp patches on the walls or draughts through windows, doors, and floors? If you spot the signs of someone, especially someone who is vulnerable, living in a cold home please do get in touch with our team.”

Council confirm the new Changes to Covid restrictions New Covid-19 restrictions have come into force from 30th November in response to the emergence of UK cases of the Omicron variant. From Tuesday (30th), face coverings must be worn in shops and on public transport, unless medically exempt. International arrivals into the UK must take a Day 2 PCR test and self-isolate until they receive a negative test. All contacts of suspected Omicron cases must also self-isolate, regardless of their vaccination status, and will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace. Pupils in Year 7 and above have been advised to wear masks in communal areas in schools. The Government has said that these restrictions are precautionary and will be reviewed in three weeks. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health in Sheffield, said: "New variants of concern are always a worry as we don't know exactly how transmissible they are or how effective our current vaccines will be, but they don't change how we tackle Covid. The government has acted swiftly following the emergence of this variant and that should be taken as an indicator of the level of concern.
"That's why it's important that we're getting on the front foot and taking these steps to try and limit the spread now as a precaution. "We won't fully understand the impact of the Omicron variant for a couple of weeks, but by taking measures such as wearing face coverings now, which we know do make a difference to transmission, we can all do our bit. "We want to go forward, not back, and it's better that we take precautionary measures now that could put us in a better position over the coming winter months. Despite these changes, I want to reassure people that there’s no need to panic. There have been no known cases of Omicron in Sheffield so far. We know this will develop over the coming days and weeks and we will provide further updates. “As ever, guidance will be available for businesses to help make sure they're Covid-secure and Business Sheffield advisors are on hand to provide support. "The same fundamentals still apply: get your booster jab, wear a face covering, test, isolate and take care of yourselves." The full Government guidance on the new restrictions can be found at www.gov.uk.
To find out more about booking a Covid-19 test in Sheffield, please visit https://bit.ly/Community_Testing. When to book a test If you have Covid-19 symptoms, you need to get a free PCR test done within 48 hours. If you have symptoms you must also self-isolate at home and only leave your home to get a test. If you have symptoms call 119 or follow the testing information on the NHS website www.nhs. uk/coronavirus to arrange a test. Anyone without symptoms can also take a rapid Lateral Flow Device (LFD) test twice a week. These tests are available for everyone in England and there are several ways of getting them, such as ordering them online. There are now nasal only LFD tests with different waiting times. The tests you get may be different to the ones you have done before so always check the pack instructions. Information on Covid support available in Sheffield, including Test and Trace Support Payments, can be found at: www. sheffield.gov.uk/home/yourcity-council/coronavirus-hub/ support-for-people.

Blitz survivor set to host commemoration event – one year on The 80th anniversary of two of the darkest nights in city’s history is set to be commemorated this month. The Sheffield Blitz killed and wounded over 2,000 people in December 1940 and made nearly a tenth of the city’s population homeless. The devastating attacks changed the face of the city forever and flattened much of the city centre. Sheffield Cathedral – the venue for the nine-hour long event – miraculously survived. The event is set to include the screening of a rare Sheffield Blitz film; remembrance service; exhibition; World War Two reenactors and display of vintage military vehicles and memorabilia and the launch of the 10th anniversary edition of ‘Sheffield’s Date With Hitler’ – the book that
was turned into BBC documentary ‘Sheffield – The Forgotten Blitz’. The event is set to take place on Thursday, December 9th, from 12 noon until 9pm, and is being organised by Sheffield Cathedral, the National Emergency Services Museum, Sheffield’s Date With Hitler author Neil Anderson and Richard Godley, project manager for Sheffield Blitz 75th. Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “The Sheffield Blitz changed the face of the city in December 1940 and it’s important that we mark this significant anniversary. So much of the city was destroyed, many local people lost everything but the spirit and unity of Sheffielders shone through and everyone came together to rebuild the city and their lives.
“We must never forget the sacrifices people made, the generosity people shared and the strength of community in the face of adversity. We can still learn a lot from that today and I hope all of Sheffield will join me to reflect on the enormous efforts that have led us to where we are today – a thriving, vibrant and progressive city.” There was hardly an area of the city centre that escaped unscathed in the devastating raid that took place over two nights. Much of The Moor, High Street, Castle Market and the Devonshire Street area was destroyed along with great swathes of the suburbs. Keith Farrow, vice dean at Sheffield Cathedral, said: “We’re trying to organise a day that both educates people on what
happened to Sheffield in World War Two but also allows people to come together to remember the incredible sacrifices that were made by the local population”.
The military vehicles will be on display from 12 noon until 6pm. The remembrance service will take place at 7pm. Neil Anderson, author of
‘Sheffield’s Date With Hitler’ said: “Covid halted plans for our original planned event in December 2020 and we’re very grateful for the support of Sheffield City Council that has finally allowed this 80th commemoration event to happen – one year one.” The event is free. Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury HECKY’S OFF TO A WINNING START WYCOMBE TALKING POINTS Paul Heckingbottom’s first game as permanent Blades boss was marked with a victory - thanks to goals from strikers Rhian Brewster and Billy Sharp. Heckingbottom’s first selection as United’s football manager saw just one enforced change for the Sunday lunchtime encounter with Hourihane replacing Fleck. Robinson and Ndiaye returned to the bench and were joined by goalkeeper Eastwood, who took over from the injured Verrips. United’s start was notably positive and the attacking intent in the opening 20 minutes came from the home side, with Gibbs-White seeing a lot of the ball. Less than two minutes had elapsed when the loanee provided a cross which Brewster just failed to connect with in front of goal. Brewster was also the intended target for a Stevens cross which was cut out, following a good ball by Davies, whilst it was McGoldrick and Stevens combining on the left before

Bogle headed wide. City’s early offensive efforts centred around the long throws of Kalas and a couple of corners, from one of which Martin produced a powerful header, which forced a fine save from Foderingham on 22 minutes. The Blades, however, remained the dominant force. A couple of weak efforts from Hourihane were saved and a McGoldrick shot was blocked before the opening goal arrived on 40 minutes. Good build-up from the left saw Stevens poke inside the box to BREWSTER, who was afforded too much time before firing into the bottom corner. Two other points of interest in the first half, with snow falling on Bramall Lane the white ball was swapped for a more visible yellow/green one and City picked up three bookings for timewasting. The start to the second half was not as frantic as the first and it was interrupted by what appeared to be a serious injury to City’s Baker in a challenge with Basham.
After a period of treatment, Baker was lifted onto a stretcher and carried off, to applause from the crowd and both sets of players. It took until the 65th minute for the first chance of the second half but from a Gibbs-White cross, Brewster could not get enough of a connection with his header. The goalscorer was substituted soon after following treatment in midfield. A Bakinson shot was saved by Foderingham, whilst his opposite number, Bentley, knew little but was wellplaced to block from Gibbs-
fellow South Yorkshire club Rotherham United, the Blades are one of several clubs to have joined forces to raise some vital funds for a very worthy cause. The challenge is now into its third year with staff from a variety of professional sport clubs joining Prostate United to raise awareness of prostate cancer and fundraise for Prostate Cancer UK. The challenge saw people either run 10km a day or cycle 25km a day throughout the month. United’s football manager Paul Heckingbottom and members of his staff have been taking on
the challenge and have currently raised over £2,000 and counting. Visit www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/prostateunited-2021-6792 for more information and to donate. White on 72 minutes. As the snow continued to fall, the game became open with both sides having opportunities. Egan headed wide after a corner was recycled and substitute Sharp’s scissor kick was tipped over by Bentley. City, though, looked dangerous on a couple of breaks with O’Dowda heavily involved. The nerves of United fans, however, were settled on 89 minutes when two experienced strikers combined. McGoldrick, operating towards the left for most of the game, found himself on the right to

produce an inviting cross for SHARP to react quicker than Bentley to slot home at the Kop end. Berge was introduced just before the announcement of 13 added minutes, due mainly to the injury to Baker. City won a couple of corners but United remained the more dangerous, GibbsWhite shot wide after finding space in the box. The only chance to mention late on was a Wells effort at the front post which was wide as United comfortably saw out the extra minutes ahead of Blades fans to trudge home happy in the snow.
ON TWO POINTS DROPPED That’s what it feels like if I’m being honest. I was really pleased with the performance, the determination, the spirit, the attitude. We’ve had chances in double figures, we’ve caused them all kind of problems and I would say they are the most experienced team in the division. They were really brave in keeping three up top and I will say that to Gareth when I go back in. They are a good side but we were a lot better and only disappointment for me is that one point is not three. ON A SEVEN POINT WEEK We wanted nine points from a very important
week and we’ve got seven which is positive but I still wanted nine. It’s helped us up the table so it’s been a productive week. We now have a break from the league and play Hartlepool in the Papa John’s Trophy and we will be picking from pretty much the same squad because of the situation we’re in. We are taking the competition seriously. In the league we are going well, we are now unbeaten in 10 so again that’s good to take that to double figures. ON CONSISTENCY The pleasing aspect is the consistency of the recent performances. We took the MK Dons performance into this game and as I say we should have won the game today. We are scoring goals, we are creating chances, we are pulling teams apart, so there are plenty of aspects and signs that we are
heading in the right direction. Consistency is vital and that’s what we are aiming to achieve. I said in my programme notes before the game Wycombe are a quality team, very well drilled and we’ve got the better of them in every way apart from the win, which I thought we deserved.
ON GETTING THE GAME ON We are all grateful for the hard work of the groundstaff this morning and throughout the afternoon until kick-off. We found out the game would go ahead at 1.20pm when the referee conducted his inspection and we all wanted the game on. My concern was that it could take its toll on the pitch but it played well, there was no drag, no problems, and credit to the staff for their hard work.

Paul Warne spoke to themillers.co.uk following the 0-0 draw at Oxford United. “The lads are a little disappointed we haven’t won. We kept a clean sheet against a competitor which is good but, we wanted three points today. “We had two amazing chances in the first half – both hitting the woodwork – if they go in it tips the game in our favour and maybe puts them under more pressure in the second half. “I thought we were really good, especially in the first half. The conditions made it a tough game, but it was the same for both teams. “Both teams tried to play as well as they could, but it was probably one of the coldest days I’ve experienced in my life! “All in all, we’ll take the clean sheet and the point, but we wanted more.”

Richie Wellens spoke to the media after Rovers were beaten 2-0 by Burton Albion in Sky Bet League One. Wellens felt the home side’s experience made the difference after second-half goals from Tom O’Connor and Daniel Jebbison. On not handling the conditions well enough: “They are good at what they do and they played the conditions better than us, we found it difficult to defend in the areas they played in. “The lack of experience within our team was evident in conceding the free kick for the first goal. “The players tried their best but even when we got the ball down we didn’t use it well enough.” On lacking personnel: “Unfortunately with the lack of bodies we can’t play the way I want my team to, so I get the frustration because I am just as frustrated. “When you’re asking five or six players who are still finding their way in league football to play every week it’s very difficult. “We’re chopping and changing every week because we’re losing players regularly so we haven’t got that continuity.”

Millers Poppy shirts raise £7,114 for Royal British Legion Rotherham United are delighted to confirm that our auctioned match-worn Poppy shirts issued to players for our dedicated Remembrance Day fixture against Sunderland helped raise a total of £7,114 with all profits going to The Royal British Legion. The Millers once supported this year’s Poppy Appeal, helping to raise funds for the Royal British Legion by donating the shirts worn during the scintillating 5-1 victory over Sunderland on 30th October. We are always really proud to support the RBL and we hope that our tribute to our fallen servicemen and women further displays just how much the club values the sacrifices made by those who gave their today so that we could have a tomorrow. 18 shirts – all proudly sporting a poppy in the centre – were made available for auction, with fans bidding from all over the globe to get their hands on a unique piece of Rotherham United memorabilia. Two-goal heroes Michael Smith and Freddie Ladapo saw their shirts sold for £620 and £615 respectively, with no shirt selling for less than £230. The shirts were available to bid on until 27th November, with the furthest bid coming from 5,496 miles away in the United States, with other international interest in the likes of Irealnd, France and Sweden. Rotherham United would like to wholeheartedly thank everyone who took part in the auction and helped them continue our support to the Poppy Appeal.
Dodoo: we can’t feel sorry for ourselves Joe Dodoo spoke to the media following the 2-0 defeat at Burton Albion in Sky Bet League One. On the players sticking together: “We’re on a run where it’s not falling for us but we need to stick together and fight for the club. “We can’t feel sorry for ourselves, whenever results go against us we need to look in the mirror and take responsibility. “You’re not going to get the perfect environment to play football in and we lost the battle against them.” On his form: “I only had half chances but in the situation we’re in they are big ones, I was just disappointed I couldn’t take them. “As a more experienced player it’s important for me to encourage the younger players to keep their heads up. “I’m playing regularly and I’d like to contribute with more goals, we’ve been inconsistent and we need to find some stability in our performances.”
