Mayor Dan Jarvis said: “I am not asking for special treatment for South Yorkshire, just that we get our fair share. “From next year, South Yorkshire would have got hundreds of millions of pounds more from EU funding, had that still been in place. The Prime Minister promised places
like South Yorkshire would not lose out after Brexit. We are asking him to keep his word. “We have plans to build a stronger, greener and fairer economy, and we have proven we can deliver – we just need the right tools to do the job. The government should extend its commitment to funding all regions who now meet the criteria for increased funding, including South Yorkshire.” After Brexit, the government committed to match EU funds for less
developed communities through its UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). Cornwall is due to receive this funding in recognition of its rates of deprivation, but it’s emerged a number of other regions, including South Yorkshire, should qualify. The Autumn Statement stated that: “The Budget and Spending Review reaffirms that total funding through the UKSPF will at a minimum match the size of EU Funds in each nation and in Cornwall, each year.” As the only area of

However, research by the Industrial Communities Alliance (ICA) illustrates that after 2020, Tees Valley and Durham, South Yorkshire, and Lincolnshire all now fall below this threshold, with South Yorkshire’s GDP per head (70.3% of the UK average) being lower than Cornwall’s (70.9%).

STEVE HACKETT BRINGS 50TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW TO THE CITY HALL Hot on the heels of his most successful solo tour ever, Steve Hackett announces his Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited - Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights tour for 2022 including a date at Sheffield City Hall on Friday 30th September. The tour will mark the 50th anniversary of the legendary Genesis album Foxtrot which, in 1972, was pivotal in establishing the band as a major force in British rock. Tickets are available from 10am on Friday 10th December via myticket. co.uk. Guitarist Steve Hackett joined Genesis in 1971,
making his band debut on the Nursery Cryme album which enjoyed a greater commercial success in Europe than the UK. After extensive touring, the band were encouraged, by audience reactions, to further experiment with ever longer compositions and develop their ability to incorporate strong narratives. This, in turn, allowed frontman Peter Gabriel more opportunity to indulge in the theatrics which helped to raise the band’s profile. “I think Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at that time,” says Steve Hackett. “I think there is not one weak track on the album, they
all have their strong points and I’m really looking forward to doing the whole album live.” Foxtrot was critically acclaimed and became the first Genesis album to make the UK album charts. The first track, the sci-fi influenced Watcher of the Skies became a fan favourite and perennial live set opener while Get ‘Em Out By Friday was a cutting slice of social comment about concrete tower blocks replacing aging slums, driven not by concern for communities but by the greed of developers. Hackett was the lead writer of Can-Utility and the Coastliners, featuring
some particularly strong musical ideas, and also contributed his classicallyinspired solo piece Horizons. “The original version was a rough mix but there was something about it. A rough monitor mix can have things that something more considered won’t necessarily possess. I liked the sound of the rough mix, so we went with that.” The album’s highlight was the 23-minute epic Supper’s Ready which remains a concert favourite and featured on Hackett’s recent Second’s Out tour. “’Supper’s Ready’ was a sojourn, an odyssey and something
that goes down very, very well with audiences now.” Hackett adds. “As part of ‘Second’s Out’ I’ve been playing the whole of that again, it really has stood the test of time. “We were a young, struggling band at that time. By the time we were doing ‘Foxtrot’, the band was becoming more ambitious. ‘Foxtrot’ is a must for fans of the early Genesis work. Fifty years ago? It doesn’t feel like those ideas are fifty years old because it was-genre defining, rather than following trends. It still sounds current, now.” The Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited - Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights
tour also promises more Genesis favourites and highlights from Hackett’s extensive solo catalogue. Steve Hackett and his touring line-up of Roger King (keyboards), Jonas Reingold (bass, backing vocals), Nad Sylvan (vocals), Rob Townsend (saxophone, flutes, additional keyboards) and Craig Blundell (drums) have recently completed the 31-date Genesis Revisited Seconds Out +More UK tour plus additional European dates. Tickets are available from 10am on Friday 10th December via myticket.co.uk.

It’s a five minute walk from my house to the pub. It’s a 35 minute walk from the pub to my house. The difference is staggering. I just got a new job as a street cleaner! Turns out there’s not much training involved, you just pick stuff up as you go along. Boy: *Kissing girl on couch* You wanna take this upstairs? Girl: Sure baby. Boy: Then grab the end. I can’t carry it by myself. My wife says I only have 2 faults. I don’t listen - and something else... Did you hear about the guy who lost his left arm and left leg in an accident? He’s all right now. A writer approached me today acting strange and asked me to help him find his back garden… I think he’s lost the plot. Earlier today someone sent me a bunch of flowers, but all the heads had been cut off. I think I’m being stalked. My wife just accused me of having zero empathy. I don’t understand how she can feel that way. At work, my colleagues have given me the nickname “Mr. Compromise.” It wasn’t my first choice, but I’m ok with it. I thought I won the argument with my wife as to how to arrange the dining room furniture... But when I got home, the tables were turned. My girlfriend - who is deaf just told me: “I seriously think we need to talk.” That’s not a good sign.

traffic cameras Sheffield residents can monitor traffic and weather conditions on the roads this year, by viewing traffic camera footage. When wintry weather arrives, as it did this weekend, people can assess driving conditions and traffic levels right across the city, before heading out on their journey. Accessing the camera feeds will make it easier for drivers and pedestrians to plan their routes, identify which areas are impacted by severe weather and avoid congested areas. Both Sheffield City Council Traffic Cameras and Highways England motorway and trunk roads can be viewed online at one.network Once accessed, users can move around the map to the area they are interested in. How to view traffic cameras in Sheffield • Visit one.network • Select which option you would like to be displayed at the top left of the screen. (Access to some of the options will require you to register and sign in.) • The option to see a subset of Sheffield City Council Traffic Cameras can be accessed via the Driver Information tab. • Select Traffic Cameras and toggle the option on the right-hand side i.e. grey to green • Close the window and camera icons will be visible. There are over 50 Urban Traffic Control traffic cameras across Sheffield which are owned and managed by the council. Whilst the cameras do not record footage, they help to monitor and control the flow of traffic and detect and assess live incidents and issues on the roads. Executive member for Housing, Roads and Waste Management at Sheffield City Council, Councillor Paul Wood said: “Our Urban Traffic Control cameras provide us with up to date, valuable information right across our expansive highway network. During the winter months particularly, the snapshots can show us what’s happening weather-wise across various locations at any given time. This is vital for us to be able to have an overview of the city and work with our partners to mitigate and respond to issues such as snow accumulations, collisions or obstructions.”

little amal’s journey remembered in film
Last month, Little Amal received a true Yorkshire welcome when she made her penultimate stop in Sheffield on her journey from the Turkey-Syria border all the way to Manchester. After making stops at numerous cities across Europe, including Rome, Athens, Paris and London, the 3.5metre high puppet of a Syrian refugee was greeted by hundreds of Sheffielders who came out to catch a glimpse of her and join in the festivities for her arrival. Working in partnership with Good Chance - a charity which works with refugees, artists and local communities to tell stories of hope and humanity - Sheffield Theatres organised Little Amal’s visit to Sheffield, the UK’s first City of Sanctuary. And now, a heart-warming film has been put together which documents the incredible events and spirit of the day. Councillor Alison Teal, Executive Member for Sustainable Neighbourhoods, Wellbeing, Parks and Leisure, said: “We are a city that has welcomed refugees here for a long time. Little Amal’s story will stay with us and I’m so glad we have this film to remember the occasion. It was extremely moving to see our communities embrace her visit united in a message of welcome. Many children have walked in Amal’s shoes and are left with no other option than to leave their homes and travel a very long way to find a new one. It must be very frightening and we’re glad that Sheffield is a city that will give children a place to call home with the help they need to be safe. We are proud to be the first City of Sanctuary and were honoured to welcome Amal as well as those who have been on the journey with her to our city.”

Mansion House to open for Christmas entertainment Residents and visitors to Doncaster now have the opportunity to join the Civic Mayor for a special tour of the Mansion House on Friday 10 December and enjoy festive treats and entertainment as the countdown to Christmas has begun. Cllr Richard Allan Jones, Civic Mayor for Doncaster, said: “The Mansion House is one of the jewels in our crown and I am delighted that we are opening it up, once again, so people can take a look around at this special time of year. I look forward to safely welcoming our residents and visitors to this historic and unique building.” As well as mince pies and hot drinks on offer, The Cusworth Singers will be playing live for visitors to enjoy. Tickets, which are limited, are £3 and available to purchase by calling the Tourist Information Centre on 01302 734309. The Mansion House will also be open on Saturdays 4 and 18 December for tours and an opportunity
to meet the Mayor and Mayoress in the Mayor’s Parlour. Plenty more festive entertainment is happening across the borough with roadshows taking place in the heart of communities and will include fun, competitions and prizes. Other Christmas highlights include winter cabins hosting local small businesses at Clock Corner every Friday, Saturday and Sunday and all week from 20 December to Christmas Eve. There will also be street entertainment, face painting and giveaways. An event not to be missed will be on the evening of 20 December at Sir Nigel Gresley Square where carols, a brass band, choirs, dance and illumination will be taking place around the Christmas Tree. A full round up of the events and activities is available at https://www.visitdoncaster.com/ news/christmas-in-doncaster/

three on the bounce for blades Jack Hall set for The Blades recorded a first ever victory at the Cardiff City Stadium and in the process made it four unbeaten in the Sky Bet Championship. In an eventful fixture, Cardiff took a firsthalf lead but after their captain, Sean Morrison, was sent off, Paul Heckingbottom’s team took complete control, with goals from Morgan Gibbs-White, Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick sealing the victory. Skipper Sharp returned to the starting line up, replacing the injured Brewster as Heckingbottom’s only change. Norwood shook off a calf injury to make his 400th career league appearance, whilst Baldock, McBurnie and Mousset returned to the bench after all came through a midweek friendly. Cardiff ’s early offensive intent centred around set-pieces, particularly Pack’s long-throw, but the Blades had three good chances in the opening 15 minutes and should have been ahead. Firstly, Sharp was unmarked and onside to meet Bogle’s cross but his header was saved by Smithies. It was the same duo moments later on 14 minutes, a deft Gibbs-White pass put Sharp through but the skipper was denied by the home goalkeeper’s legs and before the Bluebirds fans could relax, an elaborate corner routine saw Hourihane find space to curl over the

crossbar. McGoldrick’s left-footer was also saved by Smithies, whilst Cardiff had to wait until 29 minutes to register their first chance of note and it was very close. Following an outswinging corner, Nelson rose highest and his header took a deflection before Foderingham managed to direct the ball onto a post. However, it was a sign of Cardiff getting on top. On 32 minutes, a free-kick was not cleared and the Welsh side were afforded a number of touches around the penalty box before Ralls clipped over the defence for HARRIS to beat the exposed Foderingham. United’s goalkeeper prevented Cardiff making it two just moments later, saving after the home side’s Davies got the better of the away side’s Davies. As the rain began to fall the chances dried up, apart from in the one minute of added time, when United had two opportunities to level Gibbs-White attached himself to Norwood’s cross but could not turn the ball towards goal and then a deflected McGoldrick shot dropped at the feet of Bogle but his effort was blocked off. The first talking point of the second half was an indisputable sending off. Sharp had got around the back of Morrison a number of times and from the latest McGoldrick pass the skippers collided on the edge of the penalty area.
Referee Busby quickly showed the red card to Morrison, although United could not benefit from the resulting free-kick, Gibbs-White curling over. The Wolves loanee, however, who had a spell at Cardiff ’s neighbours Swansea, soon made amends. Just after the hour, he took a simple pass from Stevens on the left and cut inside before curling a 20-yard effort into the top corner, evading the left-hand of Smithies, GIBBS-WHITE delighting the travelling fans. It was almost a second in quick succession for the Blades when McGoldrick turned Bogle’s effort towards goal but Smithies parried off the line and with the visiting side utilising their numerical advantage, Cardiff sent on fresh legs, using up all their substitutes with more than 25 minutes left on the clock. United,
expectedly, were controlling possession and were patient in trying to move Cardiff ’s two banks of four across the pitch. That was evident in the Blades taking the lead on 73 minutes. Norwood, Basham and Bogle were all involved before GibbsWhite got in the clear - his low, driven cross was turned home by SHARP, despite pressure from Flint. Two became three soon after, the visitors adding a third with the very next attack. GibbsWhite was again involved, driving at the centre of Cardiff ’s defence before coolly laying off for McGOLDRICK to drill home, his shot taking a deflection before finding the net via a post. In the final ten minutes, Bogle went close to turning in Hourihane’s cross and a Cardiff chance saw Moore well off target with a leftfooted drive. Late on Gibbs-White,

scorer of one and creator of two, received a standing ovation from the Blades fans as he was substituted, but there was late drama. As the clock ticked around to 90 minutes, Foderingham turned over a downward header from Moore but from the resulting corner McGUINNESS’s looping header found the far corner. This resulted in the four added minutes being cheered by the Bluebirds faithful who had stayed in the ground. They had one more longthrow to watch, which resulted in a Blades break, forcing Smithies into yet another save, this time from Hourihane. Smithies’ save, however, was the last touch as the Blades headed back up to Yorkshire with three welcome points.
Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Jack Hall has received an invite to attend an England international goalkeeping camp. The four-day event will take place at St George’s Park and run from Sunday to Wednesday. Over the four days, goalkeepers across a raft of age groups will be put through their paces by the England youth
coaches. Back in October, Hall made his bow on the international stage by featuring for England Under-18s in the 3-0 win over Russia. The youngster had previously attended training camps with the Three Lions prior to beginning his scholarship at the club. The 17-year-old signed professional terms with Wednesday in October
after rising all the way through our youth system. Hall will swiftly link up with our Under18s following the completion of the camp as Wednesday head to Southampton for the FA Youth Cup third round tie later in the week. The Owls face the Saints on Thursday 9 December at St Mary’s (7.00pm).

Jayden Onen has joined Sheffield Wednesday after a successful trial spell. The attacking midfielder has spent time this season training with the Owls and has featured on one occasion for Lee Bullen’s Under-23s. During the 23s’ 1-1 draw with Coventry back in September, Onen registered an assist for Basile Zottos’ first half strike. The 20-year-old began his early academy years with the likes of Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Brighton before joining

Brentford B. During his two years with the Bees from 2018 to 2020, Onen had a short loan spell with National League side Bromley in 2019. The young forward spent last season with Championship side Reading and made two appearances for the Royals. Onen will link up with the Under-23 squad, who face Hull City at Stocksbridge on Wednesday (12 noon k/o). He said: “I’m delighted to get it all signed and sorted and my main focus is to get as fit as I can. I got a
little taste of first team football last season with Reading and made my debut against Norwich it’s made me hungry for more. I know what I need to do and where I want to be. I had a good week training here, spent time with the first team and the lads were very welcoming and now I just want to push on. I played in the game at Coventry and I thought we played really well that day, there were a lot of young lads from the club playing but they did well and now I can’t wait to get started.”

warne reflects on cup win
millers into third round draw
Paul Warne reflected on another win - this time in the Emirates FA Cup - over Stockport County... “We got the game that we expected. We knew it was going to be really tough. Fair play to Dave [Challinor], Stockport and all of their fans. They made it a real cup evening. We didn’t play at our fluid best but how much of that was us and how much of that was the opposition? They didn’t let us play at our best. I thought their wing backs played really well to neutralise ours and we didn’t get enough crosses into the box. We didn’t win enough second balls in midfield either really. I think you could see what I thought of the game when I was putting Joe Mattock on as wing back and I changed my sitting midfielder to Haks because I felt like we were hanging on for the last few minutes. I thought we defended pretty well in fairness. I think if we’d have got a second goal, the game would have felt a lot more comfortable. We had patches of it and had a few one-on-ones second half where we should have took the second goal, but at 1-0 against any opposition is difficult. Like I said, I thought they were really good.” Meanwhile The Millers are utilising Tuesday’s Sky Bet League One fixture with the Gills to showcase their support for the Rainbow Laces campaign and to raise awareness of the need to make the sport a game for everyone. As always, players from both sides will have the option of outwardly displaying their support by lacing up their boots with Stonewall’s rainbow laces, with both captains donning multicoloured armbands for the fixture.
mcsheffrey reflects on first game in charge
Gary McSheffrey spoke to the media after Rovers were beaten 3-2 by Mansfield Town in the Emirates FA Cup second round. Three second-half goals did the damage for the Stags, with Rovers unable to capitalise on Branden Horton’s early opener. On not getting through: “Obviously we’re disappointed not to get the result. I thought in the first-half we came out well and pressed them aggressively. With a bit more quality and cutting edge in decision making I felt that we could have gone further ahead. They made a change in personnel and shape at half-time and that seemed to swing the momentum in their favour.” On struggling to deal with Mansfield in the second-half: “For 15 minutes we didn’t have an answer for them and you could see they were winning first contacts all over the pitch. Their midfield had more energy and we struggled to stop them from coming at us as the game went on. We tried to ride the storm and get up the pitch a bit quicker, I think we have to be better at managing games in certain periods.” Branden Horton spoke to the media following the defeat against Mansfield Town in the Emirates FA Cup second round. The young defender opened the scoring with his first ever professional goal at the Keepmoat Stadium, but the Stags were the team to progress in the competition. On a good start: “It was a very good start for us, we came out fighting and got a goal which boosted confidence. It’s a nice feeling to get my first goal, hopefully there will be more to come because it was a great feeling. I thought first-half we did well and took a lead into half-time, but couldn’t build on it which is disappointing.” On the team reacting better to things going against them: “They came out quickly after the break and we didn’t respond well to that, it’s a big learning curve. An early goal for them meant that our heads went down a little bit and we need to make sure that doesn’t keep happening.”

Rotherham United could potentially be pitting their wits against the cream of English football as they booked their place in the Emirates FA Cup third round draw, at the expense of National League outfit Stockport County. Paul Warne’s side were indebted to Michael Smith for notching the decisive winner with his 15th goal of the season in all competitions, but they were pushed all the way by the Greater Manchester, who were looking for another Sky Bet League One scalp, after disposing off Bolton Wanderers in the first round. The Millers had the first foray of note, in the early minutes, when Smith switched play to great effect and Chiedozie Ogbene got the ball under his spell, before shooting goalwards with his weaker left-foot, but Mark Kitching deflected his effort away from goal. The National League side were acquitting themselves well in the early stages and Will Collar had their first shot in anger with a low skimming drive from distance which brought a smothered save from Vickers. Mickel Miller failed to make the best of a couple of crossing positions from the left flank before Ogbene made light work of Collar, to dart for the box, before being cynically felled by the visiting player, who received the first yellow card of the evening, Miller almost exacted retribution, from the resultant free-kick, when he fired a fierce left footed effort which had Ben Hinchliffe scrambling, as it whistled just over the Stockport bar. Miller was in the thick of the action, and he nodded harmlessly wide following Rarmani Edmonds-Green’s floated centre. The Lancastrians gave the Millers a scare when Hinchliffe’s long punt forward was taken in his stride by Scott Quigley, who tried his luck with a rasping effort from long range which was arrowing into the top corner of the goal, until Vickers pulled off a top drawer save, to keep the ball out. Just before the half hour mark, Macauley Southam-Hales delivered a delicious centre which narrowly evaded the attentions of an unmarked Antoni Sarcevic, at the far post. The Millers had a good opportunity when Stockport failed to clear the danger decisively and Ben Wiles pounced onto the loose ball to drill a low effort goalwards, but Hinchliffe, who looked initially wrong-footed, did superbly to

Our superb junior prices are also frozen with under 11s able to watch Wednesday next term for just £1 per game on the Grandstand Family Area, making an ideal Christmas present for the mini-Owl in the family. There will be phased sales periods over the coming month. The Early Bird offer is available for existing Season Ticket holders or new supporters, and all fans can use current ticket credits if applicable. We are once again pleased to team up with V12 Retail Finance to give Wednesdayites the finance option over six or 10 months. Supporters who hold a Multi-Year Season Ticket that includes the 2022/23 season and beyond do not need to take any action, the Ticket Office will automatically facilitate following the deadline and any relevant credits will be applied to accounts. regain his balance, and palm the ball air in the air, before gathering it at the second attempt. There was a moment of controversy when Stockport countered with purpose and Ollie Crankshaw produced a through ball which looked inviting for Quigley, who was looked to race clear, before Miller launched a hefty challenge, which felled the County frontman. The incident saw Miller earn yellow and he may have been saved from further sanction, from an earlier offside award. Smith soon joined him in the book following a clash with Kitching but the Millers top scorer went from villain to hero, by opening the scoring just minutes before the break. Miller injected pace into a home move with a direct move before threading the ball to Ollie Rathbone, who expertly picked out the run of Smith, who had got a yard on his marker, and the home frontman stroked the ball out of the reach of Hinchliffe, and into the bottom corner of the goal. The Millers were boosted by the breakthrough and Miller was the next to threaten by letting fly from distance, but Hinchliffe parried the ball to safety. The Millers were knocking on the door at the start of the second half when good interplay involving Ogbene and Smith paved the way for Rathbone, to shoot from a tight angle, but his snap effort was deflected into the side netting. Minutes later, Ogbene’s direct run ended with a left-footed effort, from the edge of the box, which whistled past the upright. Dave Challinor’s men were very much in the contest and Ryan Rydel hit a sweet strike from distance which Michael Ihiekwe bravely headed away from goal before Sarcevic prodded goalwards, following a goalmouth scramble, but Vickers was his equal with a smart catch. The Millers squandered an opportunity to give themselves some much-needed breathing space when Rathbone broke clear, before calmly picking out Freddie Ladapo, who looked to slide home, but Ben Barclay came out of nowhere with a fine block to deny him. Southam-Hales became the next to see yellow for a late clip on Miller before Stockport missed a gilt-edged chance to level matters. Ihiekwe was penalised for illegally towering over Quigley and Rydel swung over an inch-perfect free-kick which looked inviting for Ash Palmer to head home, but the County skipper planted his header wide when it looked easier to score. The Millers had a half chance when Ogbene’s dinked ball appeared to set Wiles through but Hinchliffe was quick off his line to snuff out the danger. Ladapo was harshly carded following a clash with Hinchiffe which was deemed dangerous play and the Hatters ‘keeper was called into action to deny Wiles and then Miller, with back-to-back saves. The Millers were looking for the all-important second goal and Smith was inches away from tapping home Miller’s low centre, but the ball was taken off his toe, before Ihiekwe headed wide, from the resultant corner. There was a pivotal moment in the tie when a quarter of an hour to go when Rydel delivered another wicked free-kick into the box, and following the slightest of flick-on’s, sub Paddy Madden stooped low to head home from close range, and send the large travelling hordes into raptures, but their joy proved short-lived, as the assistant referee had already raised a flag. Time was running out for the visitors and County frustration boiled over when Sarcevic was carded and sub Joe Mattock joined him in the book for a needless foul. County pressed hard for an equaliser, in the five minutes of stoppage time, but Rotherham, who had earlier brought on Mattock and Hakeem Odoffin, to consolidate their advantage showed good game management in the latter stages, to edge out the visitors, whose players and supporters can take great credit for a fine showing in South Yorkshire.
