ambulances and additional frontline staff, members of the public have a key role to play by ensuring they use the service responsibly. Nick Smith, Executive Director of Operations for Yorkshire Ambulance Service, said: “The on-going pressures of COVID-19 and exceptional levels of demand, higher staff sickness levels and the wider pressures being felt across the whole of the NHS system, have all impacted on our services. We are doing all we can to ensure that our patients get the help they need. “We always prioritise our response to the most seriously ill and injured patients. The public can help with this by knowing when to call 999 and when
another NHS service is more appropriate. “If someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk, you should call 999 immediately. If not, please consider other healthcare options.” Genuine 999 calls include chest pain, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, severe loss of blood, severe burns and scalds, choking, fitting/ convulsions, drowning, severe allergic reaction, heart attack, stroke and major trauma such as a serious road traffic accident, stabbing, shooting, fall from height or a serious head injury. For other illnesses and injuries, consider other more appropriate healthcare
services such as self-care, the pharmacist, visiting the NHS website www.nhs.uk, your GP, calling NHS 111 or visit www.111.nhs.uk, Urgent treatment centre/walk-in centre/minor injuries unit & making your own way to your local A&E. The Trust’s NHS 111 service, which is also dealing with a 25% increase in calls compared to pre-pandemic levels, has increased staffing levels to support further surges in demand which are expected over the festive period. Patients are encouraged to visit 111. nhs.uk or call 111 if their healthcare need is urgent but not an emergency. Mr Smith also reminded the public that calling 999 doesn’t
mean we’ll definitely send an ambulance. The Trust will provide the most appropriate response for your need; this may be a clinical telephone assessment or referral to another NHS service. He added: “Our dedicated staff are doing their best to respond as quickly as possible to all 999 calls, but we acknowledge that there may be a delay at exceptionally busy times. We would urge you not to ring us back to ask how long the crews will be. This could delay us speaking to a caller about a seriously ill or injured patient. Only call us back if the patient’s condition worsens, they no longer need our help or if you are making your own way to hospital.”

public URGED to use ambulance service wisely Yorkshire Ambulance Service is urging residents to think before they call 999 as the service faces its most challenging winter in history. The service is already dealing with a sustained 25% increase in demand compared to pre-pandemic levels and this is expected to increase by a further 30% on the busiest days of the festive period. Staff are currently dealing with an average of 3,400 calls every day. It is predicted that this could increase to 4,500 ‘999’ calls on Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day which equates to an average of one call every 20 seconds. While there are measures in place to help cope with the rise in demand, including more

What’s the fastest liquid on Earth? Milk. It’s pasteurised before you can see it. A Woodworm walks into a bar... And asks: “Is the bar tender here?” I told my wife that a husband ages like wine. We get better with age. Then she locked me in the cellar. A new strain of lice is going around that is resistant to conventional treatments. It’s left scientists scratching their heads. My neighbor kept running across my lawn and then pretends to get blown up by explosives. I’m tired of his mine games. Getting my toy drone stuck in the tree isn’t the worst thing that happened to me today. But it’s definitely up there. When I was 10 my Mom told me to take my brother to a movie so she could set up for his surprise birthday party. That was when I realized he was her favorite twin, not me. A man walked into a hardware store, picked up a can of fly spray and asked the assistant, “Is this good for wasps?” Assistant: “No. It kills them.” After all these years, my wife still thinks I’m sexy. Every time I walk by she says: “What an ass!” They all laughed when I told them that one day I would discover the secrets of invisibility. If only they could see me now. My wife was worried about meeting new people on our upcoming cruise. I said: “Don’t worry. We’ll all be in the same boat.”

News, Information and Advice
budget consultation open don’t drink Consultation on budget proposals for 2022/23 is open and the Council want to hear from as many local people as possible by January 17. The council is facing a challenging financial position this coming year following the enormous demands placed on services during the Covid pandemic but remains ambitious for the city’s future. In the coming year the council is facing a budget gap of £98million before savings are made and actions are taken. So far, the council has declared £35.7million in savings leaving a remaining net budget gap of £62.3million. Since the pandemic, there have been unprecedented demands on health and social care services which the council has not hesitated to provide but now faces the challenge of achieving a balanced financial position for the coming year. The authority is currently working to find areas of additional savings and income to balance the budget. Schemes such as Voluntary Early Retirement and Voluntary Severance are already underway to look at ways to reduce spend this year, with the hope to achieve a more manageable starting point for the coming year. This year’s Government Spending Review highlighted there will be no additional funding given to local authorities to tackle the ongoing impact of Covid. Instead, local authorities can expect a share of the £1.6billion funding for councils for 2022/23 but how this money will be distributed is not yet known. Sheffield City Council anticipates it will receive £15million, which is not sufficient to close the budget gap and does not compensate Sheffield, and other local authorities, sufficiently for spiralling costs or mitigate the impact of Covid-19. Budget proposals include an increase in Council Tax, in line with the Government’s Spending Review. This allows councils to increase Council Tax by up to 1.99% with an additional 1% precept to help cover adult social care costs. This will see a total increase of 2.99% applied, raising an extra

£6.711million. The consultation asks people to think about how the Council spenda and collects money and what areas the Council should spend more, less or the same on in order to balance the budget, including: • Revenue - covers the day-to-day running costs of services, such as schools, adult and children’s social care services, planning and leisure • Capital - pays for buildings, roads and housing and for major repairs to them • Fees and charges - collected for a number of different services such as social care, building control, parking, bereavement, hire of facilities, licensing, sport and leisure, libraries, waste services, planning and more Cllr Cate McDonald, Executive Member for Finance and Resources, said: “Since the pandemic began we have faced challenges like we have never seen before and it’s not over because we are now dealing with the financial consequences all the while still meeting the ongoing needs of our residents. While we are met with one of the toughest budget gaps in recent years, due to Government cuts and the pressures of Covid, we as a council have managed our finances prudently and will ensure we balance the budget, continue to provide much needed services to residents and put Sheffield first. Over the past decade we have faced cuts to our budget, and since 2010/11, Sheffield has had its spending power reduced by £215m (31%) – the equivalent of £383 for every Sheffield resident. This is above average for the rest of England. As a result, hard-working people continue to shoulder this shortfall of funding. The situation is not sustainable and we need the Government to provide the relevant funding to help Sheffield recover. We are prioritising the vulnerable and remain ambitious for the city and the aims of our One Year Plan but acknowledge that some difficult choices will have to be made. We want local people to tell us what they think through the consultation and help us shape these decisions.” Have your say by completing the online consultation by January 17.

Motorists are urged to be cautious this party season and think before getting behind the wheel as drink-driving offences remain high across the UK. Data from Confused.com reveals that December remains a prolific month for drink-driving offences, with approximately 3,667 UK drivers caught behind the wheel last year. This means that, on average, 118 drink-driving arrests were made per day last December, despite the UK being in a national lockdown for the majority of the month. Further research suggests that drink-driving offences could be on the rise this party season. More than half (53%) of UK drivers who will be attending Christmas parties said they plan to attend more events this year than in 2020. And it seems that some drivers are open to taking the risk, as half (50%) of UK drivers admitted to driving after having an alcoholic drink. Drivers should be aware that it’s not just having a drink and driving that could land them in hot water. Almost a third (32%) said they had driven the morning after drinking, even though they weren’t sure whether they were within the legal limit. With this in mind, Confused.com has created a morning after calculator to help drivers make informed decisions on when it’s safe to drive the day after drinking. And although the UK still has some restrictions in place, there’s cause for concern that pre-pandemic trends might be back on the rise. Data gathered from 2019 showed that in December, approximately 5,510 drink-driving arrests were made across the UK, equivalent to 178 per day, on average. Although the 2019 data is significantly higher in comparison to 2020 (+50%), the statistics remain shockingly high. The concerns around a rise in drink-driving offences could be justified, as a number of UK drivers plan on making the most out of their freedom this winter. Almost two-fifths (39%) of drivers who are attending more events this year said they wanted to make up for lost time during the pandemic. And over a third (34%) also said that they wanted to socialise as much

as possible. However, many drivers are aware of the risk of drinking and driving this time of year. Nearly two-fifths (37%) of UK drivers admitted they’re more cautious about being pulled over by police during the Christmas period. Despite this, around six in 10 people (60%) who have driven after a drink claim they did so as they knew they were within the legal limit. Drivers also said have driven after a drink because: • They only one or two drinks (44%) • They felt sober and in control (39%) • They didn’t have far to go (23%) • They had a big meal before driving (19%). But, one in eight (12%) of UK drivers admitted that there is still some confusion about how much they can drink before getting into a vehicle, with almost one in six (16%) also unaware of how long it takes for alcohol to leave the body. When trying to work out whether they’re within the limit, over two-fifths (45%) of drivers said they’d consider how much food they’ve eaten. Nearly a third (29%) said they’d consider their weight/height as a deciding factor, and a quarter (25%) would consider their metabolism. And even when driving after a night out, people are still needing to make a call on whether they’re safe to drive. Worryingly, almost three-fifths (57%) judged their ability to drive based on how they felt that morning. And over half (55%) assumed that the alcohol they’d consumed the night before had worn off after they had slept. As people start to plan their winter parties and social events over the next few weeks, drivers are reminded to keep in mind how they plan on travelling to and from their destinations. More than two in five (43%) UK drivers think that people are more likely to drink-drive around this time of year. So, although many might use December to let their hair down and socialise before the end of the year, it’s important to be sensible if you’re thinking of getting behind the wheel.

NEW BOOK CELEBRATES SHEFFIELD’S LEADING BEER INDUSTRY A city of dreamers and innovators, pioneers and builders - Sheffield truly is one of the nation’s leading contenders in the world of beer. According to a study carried out by the University of Sheffield, in 2016 the Steel City had one brewery for every 23,991 people. Compared to Greater London (one brewery for every 112,355), Sheffield had 4.7 times as many breweries per capita as the UK’s capital city. Sheffield has continued to evolve in the space of just five years - imagine what those statistics are now. Meze Publishing had the privilege of speaking to just a fraction of those breweries and pubs, and now they bring you The Sheffield Beer and Spirits Bible. This in-depth guide to Sheffield’s beer scene contains the accounts of honest, diligent businesses, including traditional pubs, breweries, tap houses, modern bars, public events, specialist beer shops and more. All of them have helped build this thriving community into the success it is today. Dive in, read their stories, and hear how each one has poured their hearts and souls into the creations of this noteworthy selection of businesses. Discover for yourself why Sheffield is considered the mecca for all things beer-related. “It’s been a pleasure speaking to a good chunk of the wonderful brewers, traders and creatives who combine to make the Steel City craft drinks scene so exciting.” Exposed Magazine editor Joseph Food recounts, “This book is a celebration of what Sheffield has to offer and – more importantly – the hardworking people behind it.” The Sheffield Beer and Spirits Bible showcases a wide range of fantastic businesses of all ages, from only a couple of years
Government funding reopens for local creative and cultural industries Doncaster businesses are being invited to apply for the next wave of funding provided by a new grant aimed at supporting the cultural and creative sector in South Yorkshire. The Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) will help to support the Covid-19 recovery of the cultural and creative industries across the borough. A total of £1 million is available across South Yorkshire,
old, to those that have been around decades. In that mix Sheffield has indies offering their own unique quality - that special something - as well as some well-known (and wellloved) big names. There are also cocktail recipes tucked away inside this book - signatures of some of these beloved businesses that can be enjoyed from the comforts of home. Exposed Magazine’s online editor Ash Birch proclaims, “Whether you’re
a recent convert to the world of craft beer, or a card carrying CAMRA connoisseur, there’s something for everyone in our celebration of one of the most exciting brew capitals in the UK.”
The Sheffield Beer and Spirits Bible is a 128-page paperback and retails at £10. It will be available to purchase from mezepublishing.co.uk, Waterstones and independent retailers across the city.
CAMRA warns against return to “cruel and unfair” curfew for pubs Responding to speculation about the possible return of restrictions and a possible curfew for pubs in England, CAMRA’s National Chairman Nik Antona said: “The prospect of a curfew for our pubs, social clubs and brewery taprooms is a horrifying prospect for publicans across England who are already facing a collapse in consumer confidence as a result of government announcements. “Ministers shouldn’t be singling out the hospitality sector for
cruel and unfair restrictions like a curfew if other, similar businesses like non-essential retail are deemed safe to operate as normal. “Throughout the pandemic, licensees and staff working in pubs have been willing to do whatever is necessary to provide a safe, Covid-secure place for people to enjoy the wellbeing benefits of having a pint with friends and family. They can ill afford a return to arbitrary restrictions targeting one sector of the economy without adequate explanation or evidence – which has not materialised at any point in the
last 18 months, despite endless requests from CAMRA and other campaigning groups. “What pubs, social clubs and their supply chains need is a new, comprehensive support package from the Government. This must include grants, employment support, rent support and business rate relief. Existing financial schemes designed to get the hospitality sector through reopening are simply not good enough when the actions of the Government are driving consumers away from pubs in their masses.”
LIVE EVENTS AT THE PARAMOUNT
with £450,000 specifically for Doncaster. First wave applications closed late November to allow time for review, with a second wave opening from 9th December until Sunday 9th January 2022. Cllr Nigel Ball, Cabinet Member for Public Health, Leisure, Culture and Planning, said: “The funding will help safeguard creative and cultural individuals, organisations and businesses in Doncaster by enabling new creative projects and programming new work that will create vibrancy in local towns and villages.” The grant has been created specifically to help start-ups, micro and Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) in the borough, to adapt and overcome setbacks following the impact of Covid-19. The funding ranges from micro grants of £5,000 to large grants of up to £40,000. Applications must also outline how
their proposals will contribute to the borough’s Great 8 Priorities and 6 Wellbeing goals. Dan Jarvis, Mayor of South Yorkshire, said: “There is no doubt that South Yorkshire is home to a wealth of creative talent. The arts, culture and heritage sectors have been hit hard by the impact of the pandemic and investing in these areas is an essential part of their recovery and renewal. “If supported and nurtured, the Creative Industries can help drive growth in our region and realise untapped potential. Culture adds colour to people’s lives and I hope this funding will help make our region a great place to live, study, work, visit and invest in.” Businesses can apply for the second wave of applications through the Doncaster Council website until Sunday 9th January 2022.

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury Versatility and adaptability BLADES ON THE UP AFTER CAPITAL WIN United moved to within three points of top six in the Sky Bet Championship, following an excellent away success at leaders Fulham. Iliman Ndiaye’s wonderful third minute strike proved decisive in West London, as Paul Heckingbottom registered a third consecutive win since his appointment and in the process inflicted a first defeat on the Cottagers in 12 matches, a run that dates back to early October. For the televised clash in the capital, Heckingbottom was forced into two changes. Davies (personal reasons) and McGoldrick (Covid) both missed out, with Robinson and Ndiaye recalled to the starting XI. United made the dream start by the Thames, taking the lead in spectacular fashion inside the opening 180 seconds. NDIAYE picked the ball up inside his own half, advanced past Seri, before putting both Ream and Tosin on the back foot and having advanced to the edge of the area he slid home past Rodak with a fine left-footed effort. Fulham reacted to the concession of an early goal by enjoying plenty of possession but didn’t create their first chance until the 18th minute. Tete floated a ball over the top and Mitrovic got

the wrong side of Egan, but having elected to take his shot early, dragged an effort past Foderingham’s far post. Wilson was the next to threaten have turned Norwood, but despite skipping past Basham and Bogle he lost his balance at the crucial moment. United, mainly through Ndiaye, looked a live threat on the counter and after Robinson was robbed of the ball, Gibbs-White picked out Sharp, but Rodak was smartly off his line to smoother the danger. The first half looked to be
petering out until Tosin rose unmarked from Reed’s deep set-piece, but on the turn Kebano fired wide. Foderingham was then cautioned for time-wasting in the eyes of referee Linnington, prior to Norwood almost capitalising on a weak punch from Rodak. The Blades were forced into a changed at the break with Berge coming off for Gibbs-White, who had clearly picked up an issue in the first period, but that changed didn’t affect the Blades, with the Norwegian international slotting straight into his
role in midfield. Robinson was cautioned for a foul on the advancing Wilson, but Foderingham remained untroubled between the sticks. The best chance actually came United’s way as Berge found Bogle but having cut inside the wing-back was snuffed out. Fulham’s first shot on target came with 15 minutes remaining as Mitrovic drew a save from Foderingham, before Sharp had a goal ruled out for a marginal offside. Fleck and Osborn were introduced from the
bench and as the clocked ticked down, Bogle was cautioned for a foul on Kebano, with the home side racking up the corner count as they chased a leveller. A minute into the four that were added, they blew two golden chances in a matter of seconds to snatched an undeserved share of the spoils, as Mitrovic fired against the bar, with Wilson volleying the rebound high and wide as United hung on for a first league win at Craven Cottage since 1985.
Barry Bannan believes the Owls’ impressive run of resistance is credit to the hard work and versatility of the squad. Wednesday have had well-documented injury battles to contend with yet results have remained strong as we approach the halfway point in the campaign with everything to play for. Saturday’s home game against Accrington fell victim to the current situation sweeping the country, before which Bannan gave a glowing report on how the S6 camp has overcome frustrating injury hurdles. The skipper highlighted in particular the players who have shown great versatility and
adaptability to step in and do the job. He told swfc.co.uk: “We’ve been scoring goals and also had the clean sheets which is important. “When you look at it, we’ve been struggling with injuries to our centre halves, we have young Ciaran Brennan who I think has been brilliant and Palms and Marvin have been fantastic. “To ask people to play out of position or in positions they’re not used to, it is difficult. It’s not easy but they have been brilliant. “But we aren’t just relying on the defenders, we are defending from the front, as a whole team and it’s getting results.
“We’re always a goal threat, so we know if we can keep clean sheets we’re likely to go on and win games.” Wednesday have lost just three times this season from 22 league games, and only failed to score on four occasions, including the recent 0-0 draw with Portsmouth which saw the Owls play over 20 minutes with 10 men. Our unbeaten run remains on 12, Darren Moore’s side are fifth in the form table over the last six outings averaging two points per game and are currently just two points outside the top six following the postponement of the Accrington clash.

BLADES SPREAD THE FESTIVE CHEER United have once again kept the tradition of spreading festive cheer to those most in need across the city, despite not been able to visit local hospitals, hospices and other chosen charities this year. The Blades, with the backing of long-standing club sponsor HE Barnes, have been able to send numerous gifts to Weston Park Cancer Charity, the Children’s Hospital, PACES, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, St Luke’s Hospice and Support Dogs. On Thursday afternoon, after training, skipper Billy Sharp, along with John Egan, Enda Stevens, Conor Hourihane and Chris Basham were all at Bramall Lane to help load up a number vans before sending them on their way to the various locations across Sheffield. The transportation was also provided by HE Barnes, who in addition to sponsoring United’s Christmas present appeal, also kindly delivered the gifts and goodies to the gratefully waiting organisations. The Blades first team squad have also taken time out of their hectic training schedule to record some special festive messages to put smiles on the faces of several United fans, young and old and also to acknowledge the amazing staff and volunteers at all the various locations. United’s head of operations Dave McCarthy acknowledged the contribution from HE Barnes, which made the appeal possible, remarking: ‘’As a club we were disappointed that the players couldn’t pay their annual visit to all the various organisations, but we do understand that it’s important we adhere to Covid regulations, which are so important at this present time, and we want everyone to remain safe. “It has been a pleasure this year linking up with one of our key sponsors HE Barnes, who have kindly contributed to the gift purchasing and ensured all the presents are delivered safely and on time. “We value our relationship with our chosen charities so much, and it’s great to have been able to reach out to them at this time of year and on behalf of the players, everyone at the club and HE Barnes, spread bit of Xmas cheer and let them know we are thinking about them.” Abbey Rogers, human resources manager for HE Barnes explained why they feel it was an ‘honour’ to support the local community, continuing: “At HE Barnes we were proud to sponsor the Christmas gifts for the Sheffield charities associated with the Blades and us as a business. “Having been in Sheffield now for nearly 100 years, it is vitally important to us that we help those most in need in our local community. Being presented with the opportunity to be part of United’s Christmas appeal has been an honour and we hope that between us all we have brightened up the Christmas of those who need it most.” Darren Hayes, business development manager at Weston Park couldn’t thank United and HE Barnes enough for making this difficult time more manageable for their patients, adding: “On behalf of the staff and patients at Weston Park, we can’t thank Sheffield United, the players and HE Barnes enough for this incredibly generous donation of gifts for Christmas. “For the second year running we have not been able to welcome the players to the hospital to pass on the gifts, but they have gone above and beyond yet again to make sure our staff and patients still get some Christmas cheer. Thank you it really does make a big difference.” Shannon Gossage, regional fundraiser at Bluebell Wood added their appreciation of both the club and HE Barnes for spreading some ‘much-needed’ happiness throughout the hospice based in North Anston, commenting: “Sheffield United along with their brilliant staff and supporters have always been incredibly supportive and this is the latest in a long line of generous gestures that means the world to the children and families in our care. “The wonderful gifts the club has kindly gifted to the hospice will put huge smiles on the faces of the children who visit us, and we’re very grateful to all involved for making it happen safely amid the changing restrictions. “A huge thank you to everyone at the club and also to sponsors HE Barnes for spreading some much-needed festive cheer.”

Skipper reinforces squad’s desire to continue taking a knee With the calendar year of fixtures coming to a close following our home hosting of Lincoln City on 29th December, Rotherham United skipper Richard Wood has reaffirmed the club’s commitment to the message of anti-discrimination which is carried by the first team’s continued desire to ‘take a knee’ before fixtures in all competitions. With the Millers enjoying a wonderful run across league and cup competitions – which has seen them embark on a sequence of 20 games without defeat – the club captain expressed his wish to once again remind everyone of why the players are so keen to outwardly show their support of the need to continue keeping the conversation around social injustices going. Speaking to www.themillers.co.uk after making his 200th appearance in Rotherham United colours on Saturday, Wood said: “It is vitally important that we do not lose sight of why we as players across the EFL have reaffirmed our desire to continue taking a knee before fixtures. “It certainly feels like the attitude towards the gesture from the public is changing and more and more people are seeing it for what it is – and that is our way of keeping the issue of social injustice at the forefront of people’s minds. “That is really encouraging and we are really grateful, especially to the fans who applaud us taking the knee before games. It means a lot to a lot of people in the dressing room and is another morale-boosting lift before we get kicked off.” “This isn’t a problem that has gone away and we, as a group of players and staff, feel a responsibility to use our position as role models in the community to reinforce that message.

To commemorate those members of the Rovers family we have lost in 2021, we invite families and friends to submit to the club the name of a departed loved one to be included in our commemorative list. A minute of applause will be held prior to our Sky
“As people know by now, this football club means an awful lot to me personally, and to have the backing of our supporters on a subject like this makes me incredibly proud to be the captain. We know taking the knee isn’t going to solve the issue of social injustice overnight, but it keeps people talking about it and it keeps the conversation going which is at least a step in the right direction.” “People have their own opinions on politics and I think we are seeing at the moment just how divisive that can be, which once again prompts me to remind everyone that our decision to take the knee is in absolutely no way politically motivated. We feel that we can help keep the conversation going around a really important topic and that is the aim.” Football is everyone’s game and we are incredibly proud to have a captain, playing squad and set of staff who are so committed to ensuring that message is heard loud and clear here at Rotherham United.
Bet League One game against Fleetwood Town on January 8 and the list of names will be included in the matchday programme and on social media. This list will be restricted to the names of those we have lost during the period January - December 2021. If you would like to submit someone for this annual commemoration, please check first with the departed one’s relatives before submitting a name. Names of those who have passed away during 2021 should be submitted to the club by completing this form and all submissions will need to be forwarded to the club by January 1, 2022.
