SY POLICE START NEW YEAR RECRUITMENT DRIVE Degree holders with an interest in becoming a detective are being encouraged to apply to join South Yorkshire Police, as the force this week opens up applications for a new entry route. This is the first time South Yorkshire Police has recruited specifically for detectives and comes as the force continues its biggest recruitment drive in living memory which will see 1,400 officers join the force by March 2023. Applications are encouraged from people across all communities and cultures, and from all backgrounds whether a University leaver or someone simply looking for a career change.

Chief Constable Lauren Poultney said: “I am delighted to launch this new entry route into South Yorkshire Police. “Being a detective is not your everyday job. You will hold one of the most vital roles within our community, protecting the vulnerable, catching criminals and delivering an outstanding service to victims, witnesses and the public. You will manage and conduct complex investigations, in a role that requires you to routinely do what many others couldn’t or wouldn’t. “South Yorkshire Police seeks to be the very best we can be for our communities. We serve a diverse mix of

1.4million people across a varied range of settings, and we have the challenges and opportunities you find in an inner city setting and the equal but different challenge of our rural communities. This means we can offer you a breadth of experience in a short time, we can keep you busy, stimulated and above all we can enable you to reach your full potential, helping us to reach ours. “We are looking for problem solvers, the curious and the tenacious. People who have the desire to follow every lead, uncover the facts and seek results. We’re looking for the best available and if you believe that is you, we look forward to hearing from

you and welcoming you into our brilliant force.” The opportunity to apply to South Yorkshire Police’s detective degree holder entry route runs for three weeks from 4 January 2022, closing at midnight on 25 January 2022. This detective drive forms part of the Degree Holder Entry Programme, which is one of three entry routes as part of the Policing Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF), and traditionally only recruits uniformed police officers. PEQF also includes an option for those without a degree and wishing to join as an apprentice, or an option for those who want to study first. At this time,

South Yorkshire Police is not accepting applications from those wanting to join the police officer degree holder’s option, or the apprenticeship scheme. The apprenticeship scheme will, however, be opening again in the coming weeks. To provide more information on this detective specific course, SYP will hold a recruitment event over Microsoft Teams on 17 January 2022. To register for a place at the event, visit our website. To apply to join South Yorkshire Police, visit southyorkshire.police.uk/ sign-up/join-team-syp

Kaiser Chiefs to help paint Doncaster purple Doncaster Racecourse will turn purple in June 2022 with the high-profile return of the Ant Marketing Weston Park Cancer Charity race evening. The Charity’s annual race meeting will be back with a bang – with Yorkshire indie rock band the Kaiser Chiefs set to provide the post-race entertainment. The event will see the

continuation of a partnership which spans five years. In that time, it has raised more than £150,000 for Weston Park Cancer Charity to support vital cancer research, provide essential support services and enhance treatment experiences for people going through cancer. The Ant Marketing Weston Park Cancer Charity Race Day will return in 2022 after

two years of postponements due to Covid-19, with the presence of a capacity crowd expected to help raise thousands of pounds to support people facing cancer. Racegoers will also be encouraged to wear purple to raise awareness of our work across the South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire regions. Darren Hayes, our Business

Development Manager, said: “Make no mistake, our charity has missed events like this during the Covid-19 pandemic, so we’re over the moon to see it return in 2022. “The awareness it will generate, as well as fundraising through extremely generous donations, will make a huge difference to people going through cancer and cancer treatment in our region.” Almost 2,000 cancer cases are diagnosed each year in the Doncaster region (covering South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw CCG), with patients from Doncaster account for approximately 25% of patients at Weston Park Cancer Centre in Sheffield. “The Ant Marketing Weston Park Race Day is always a huge event on our calendar,” said Darren.

“Without events like this, we have unfortunately seen a drop in income of around 50 per cent during the pandemic – at a time when people facing cancer need us most. “We’re already excited for the event and we can’t wait to welcome tens of thousands of racegoers through the turnstiles once more. For one in two people, a cancer diagnosis will change everything – but with the support of people and organisations across the region, so can we.” Rachel Harwood, Executive Director at Doncaster Racecourse, said: “We’re so proud to see the return of the Ant Marketing Weston Park Race Day in 2022 – the event’s cancellation has left a huge hole in our calendar in the last two years. “We’re also very excited to have such a high-profile

line-up of entertainment following the conclusion of racing. We know racegoers will be very excited to see the Kaiser Chiefs perform live and without doubt this will make a huge impact on the funds and awareness we manage to raise. “To have raised more than £150,000 (and counting) to support cancer research, treatment and care since our first race day in 2016 is a huge achievement, and we couldn’t have done it without the incredible generosity of the people in this region.”

Tickets for the Ant Marketing Weston Park Cancer Charity Race Day are on sale now at www. doncaster-racecourse.co.uk/ whats-on/kaiser-chiefs-liveafter-racing.

News, Information and Advice

dementia support highlights feelings of loss Since 2019, Dementia UK - the dementia specialist nurse charity - has experienced a 48% increase in calls from people who are experiencing feelings of loss. Calls of this nature have seen a year-on-year rise since the start of the pandemic. The charity’s Admiral Nurses are there when people need help. They have the time to listen and the knowledge to solve problems, and are a lifeline for families facing dementia. Their Helpline Nurses have outlined some suggestions around how people can manage feelings of loss. These feelings can be triggered after a death or a diagnosis of dementia - the latter can result in changes in personality and abilities which can intensify feelings of loss for the person diagnosed, and those supporting and caring for them. 1) Acknowledge that everyone responds to grief differently Look within yourself and ask yourself how you are feeling, not what you should be feeling. Acknowledging the range of emotions that you’re going through can be helpful; this can be anger, loss, sorrow, fear, or even denial – which are all heavily associated with a bereavement. These may come over you in waves and at unexpected times, causing physical reactions such as crying and palpitations. You may find this happens during normal daily activities, such as someone cutting in front of you in a queue. You may unexpectedly become upset and start to cry, or shout. However, if you are aware of your emotions, you know your reaction is actually part of your grief response, helping you to feel more in control. 2) Be kind to yourself Try keeping a grief diary to write down your feelings and thoughts, and also to note the progress you are making day by day. Try to get outside in nature, if you can, to help you feel more connected to

CALL 0151 334 2600

the present. Find Mindfulness activities that you like on the internet or on apps, which include natural sounds and images if you can’t find time to go outside. Take things one day at a time and forgive yourself if things don’t go to plan. Tell yourself it’s ok not to feel up to much on a particular day. Do whatever makes you feel cared for, such as ordering a takeaway meal so you don’t have to cook, taking a warm bath for yourself, making a phone call to a friend or a helpline, or having a cuddle with a pet. 3) Identify sources of support Having a conversation with a dementia specialist nurse who understands what you are going through and has knowledge of different services can allow people to face their situation more comfortably. Talking to an outside compassionate voice can empower people to have that conversation around support needs; these conversations can take place between GPs or other healthcare professionals, which can then lead to signposting to bereavement counselling or support services like CRUSE. 4) Open up conversations around death and dying with friends and family Whether as a professional supporting a person with dementia or their family member, you can start having gentle conversations with someone and introduce ideas around their future. You could talk about how things might look next week, or even next week, before finally moving on to how care and support looks at end of life – resources around Advance Care Planning may help. Having these conversations early can support decision making for families, especially if faced with a crisis situation, such as Covid-19. 5) If someone close has died, make people with dementia a part of the grieving process, whenever possible Try and be honest with people with dementia when you can. The person with dementia has as much right to grieve as anyone else. Talking to them about it, allowing them to know what’s happened, and giving them time to ask questions can help them feel supported during what can be a challenging process. If appropriate, you could involve the person with dementia in any funeral arrangements if someone close to them has died. However there

may be instances when the dementia is so advanced, or the person is struggling to retain or process the information, which can make grieving for someone the person with dementia has known more challenging - be aware of any changes in behaviour which could signify this such as anxiety or distress. In these cases, it is ok to stop telling the person the bad news. Former carer Emma Scattergood, whose mother was diagnosed with mixed dementia (vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s) said: “One of the things I found hard was how some people assumed that my grief when my mother died would be reduced because I’d ‘already lost her’ to dementia. It’s true that I’d already suffered multiple feelings of loss as my mother deteriorated, but that didn’t make the ultimate sense of loss or the grieving process any easier. I also remember telling a friend that I didn’t know what ‘the point of me’ was anymore, now that I wasn’t a carer. I don’t think we appreciate the process of grief or talk about it enough. After accessing emotional support, I could understand that what I was going through was normal, and essentially be given permission to look after myself a bit better. I did little things to nurture myself, such as yoga. I discovered writing a journal helped me process everything that happened, and soon found I was on a much more even keel.” This year Dementia is launching its Remember a Star campaign. Alongside being given the opportunity to thank and celebrate someone affected by dementia, whilst giving a donation, people are remembering anyone affected by the condition. If you would like to take part in the campaign, please visit www.star.dementiauk.org.

ENTENDED HOURS CONSIDERED FOR JUBILEE BANK HOLIDAY Pubs, clubs and bars could be allowed to stay open for an extra 2 hours over extended bank holiday weekend. The government will seek to extend licensing hours across England and Wales to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next year, Home Secretary Priti Patel announced. The Platinum Jubilee will mark Her Majesty’s 70-year reign and a blockbuster weekend of celebrations is planned. This will include a 4-day bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2 June until Sunday 5 June to allow the nation to celebrate this historic milestone. To support the celebrations, the Home Office will shortly launch a public consultation on extending licensing hours for pubs, clubs and bars from the normal 11pm to 1am on Thursday 2, Friday 3 and Saturday 4 June. Home Secretary, Priti Patel, said: “Her Majesty The Queen is an

GEORGE SMITH WINS SECOND TERM AS CIU PRESIDENT George Smith of the Durham Branch has been elected to serve his second term as President of the CIU following the election held in December. Mr Smith, who has been Union President since 2020, is the current

example to us all – she has served the UK and the Commonwealth with the utmost dignity, steadfastness, and resolve throughout her remarkable reign. The Platinum Jubilee is a truly historic occasion, and it is right that the country should mark this celebration in a special way. This extension will enable families, friends and communities across England and Wales to raise a glass to toast Her Majesty The Queen and mark her incredible service to our country.” Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries said: “Next year we will celebrate an unprecedented milestone in our national life. No other British monarch has served for 70 years and it is fitting that, as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June, we toast Her Majesty for her dedication and service. 2022 will be a year of pride, celebration and coming together with the Platinum Jubilee alongside

our other blockbuster events including the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and Unboxed, championing creativity in the UK.” Section 172 of the Licensing Act 2003 allows the Home Secretary to make a licensing hours order, giving permission to premises to open for specified, extended hours to mark occasions of exceptional international, national or local significance. The extension of licensing hours will be subject to a month’s public consultation, giving the public the opportunity to submit their views on the proposals as well as seeking the views of specific stakeholders, including the police, licensing authorities and alcohol awareness groups. The public consultation will ask for an extension of licensing hours for premises already licensed for the sale of alcohol for consumption and premises already licensed for the

Branch Secretary for Durham and took 74 per cent of the vote to win the election against his rival for the position, George Dawson CMD. In total, two of the 11 NEC districts were contested in the election – District 4 and District 5. The election for District 4 (York City/ Leeds/Wakefield and Doncaster) saw incumbent NEC Member and Doncaster Branch Secretary Dave Gravel CMD beat the challenge of Leeds Branch Secretary Glenn Doyle to retain his seat. In District 5 (West Yorkshire/Heavy Woollen and South Yorkshire), Mark Fergusson

of Brinsworth Social Club polled ahead of the incumbent, Heavy Woollen Branch Secretary Les Hepworth CMD, and takes his seat on the NEC. With the incumbent NEC representative for South East Midlands and Warwickshire, Carol Goddard, stepping down, the position on the NEC has been filled by Geoff Fisher of the Warwickshire Branch. Ken Roberts CMD ACM, President of South Wales Branch, was returned unopposed in the position of Union Vice-President, while the incumbent NEC Members in the other eight districts will continue in their roles for the period of 2022-2023.

provision of regulated entertainment. The consultation will focus on whether licencing hours should be extended and the scope of a licensing hours order, including the dates, times, geographical extent and licensable activities to which it should apply. Past national occasions where the government has extended licensing hours have included the royal wedding in 2018, when the government extended licensing hours until 1am for 2 nights to facilitate the country’s celebrations. Licensing hours have also previously been extended for The Queen’s 90th birthday in 2016, the FIFA World Cup in 2014, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 and the royal wedding in 2011. Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will see a 4-day bank holiday weekend from 2 to 5 June which includes Trooping the Colour, the lighting of beacons, a Service of Thanksgiving, a concert, Platinum

Leadmill Founder Awarded CBE The Founding Director and coordinator of Sheffield’s Leadmill music venue has been made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list for ‘Services to Theatre’. Adrian Vinken led the development of the venue in the late 1970’s and was its CEO for the first ten years until he left it in 1990 to run the Theatre Royal Plymouth. He was previously awarded an OBE in 2006 for his leadership of the cultural sector in the South West and his pioneering work on The Leadmill which led to the growth of Sheffield’s Cultural Industries Quarter. In 2018 he was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Devon.” Adrian Vinken said: “The Leadmill was the launchpad for the brilliant career I’ve enjoyed and I’m chuffed that it’s still going strong. I loved hearing last year in the national news about how it managed to survive the pandemic and keep going. I hope it’s still entertaining the good music lovers of Sheffield in another 40 years!”

Berge backing Blades Sander Berge was scheduled to be the ‘player in focus’ in UTB, United’s official matchday programme, for the postponed fixture against Hull City last week. And the Norwegian international, amongst other topics of conversation, believes a more ‘aggressive’ approach on the training pitch has sparked improved performances that has yielded Paul Heckingbottom three consecutive victories since replacing Slaviša Jokanović. Berge commented: “We are being more aggressive in training I’d say, the sessions are intense and it’s going back to how we were successful previously, particularly when the club won promotion from this division three seasons ago. “The management team have come in and really got amongst the group in a very positive manner,

the lads love getting out on the training pitch and I’m sure supporters would agree that performances have got drastically better. “We need to have Bramall Lane right behind us, it is a special, historic stadium and the atmosphere can be electric. We’re very fortunate to have such

Whilst acknowledging late postponements which United have endured in recent weeks are now ‘part and parcel’ of football, Paul Heckingbottom says the lack of games haven’t and won’t

aid United’s progress moving forward. The New Years Day clash against Middlesbrough was the Blades third home game to be called off since Heckingbottom’s appointment in late

tremendous backing both at home and away and it’s down to us as players to give them plenty to shout about.” Meanwhile, the imposing midfielder who has impressed from off the bench since Heckingbottom’s appointment, believes the recent success at then leaders Fulham shows the

Blades are menacingly starting to find their best form. Berge added: “It was a really tough game but a great win, and another confidence boost for the team. “We’ve been training well and been in confident mood, and with the games continuing to come thick and fast, this

is real opportunity for us now to continue to close the gap on the teams above. “Nothing will be won or lost at this stage and it’s important that we keep our progress in perspective, but the aim, obviously, is to keep the momentum going and see where it takes us in 2022.”

Darren Moore: PostShrews talking points The Owls went down 1-0 to Shrewsbury on Sunday and here are the talking points from Darren Moore’s post-match press conference.

ON THE GAME We lost the goal to a set play and that’s never pleasing to see as a manager and after that we’ve had large spells of the game, we dominated the second half, but we couldn’t get that final touch we needed for that killer instinct to get the goal. We had a lot of the ball and Shrewsbury played the low block as the game went on. We’ve come off a bit of a crest of a wave in terms of where we were at after the Crewe game and the momentum we had so we have to get that back and find that killer instinct. There is still a long way to go this season, the team has shown we can be consistent and we need that consistency back.

sessions to prepare for and play two games and it’s damaged that rhythm. How do you get that back? By hard work on the training ground, there’s no secret formula. We have been disrupted by the COVID outbreak and over the course of the next two weeks before we play our next game we need to get those minutes and hours back that we’ve lost on the training ground. Over these last two games we’ve certainly not seen the rhythm and continuity we had before. We have to get back to being the team that was hard to beat and the team that was scoring goals. The quality, the speed of pass, the touch, the technique, all these kind of things you get on a consistent basis week on week, training session after training session. That builds the strength as a team, the cohesion of the team and you get it back on the training ground.

at a club like Sheffield Wednesday you’d be worried if that didn’t come. We have lost the last two games and of course it hurts. They care, we care, they have come here today wanting the three points and we didn’t get the three points. In football you have to earn the points and today we didn’t earn three points because we didn’t do enough to win the game.

ON THE SCHEDULE We’ve had the training ground closed for 19 days, we’ve had five training

ON THE EXPECTANCY I understand the reaction of the fans because I know the expectation levels at this club. When you are

ON INJURIES We will know more on Chey next week, it’s too early to say on Patto so we will assess him with the medical team. We’ve probably had to bring Sam back a couple of weeks sooner than we might have done because we’ve lost our central defenders to injury and I’m grateful Sam has played the full 90 minutes. With Josh, he was close again today and he will be back with the group this week. We have Massimo back from suspension and with Sam back as well, that’s two key players for us.

Sam Hutchinson returned to action for the Owls on Sunday at Shrewsbury after a long stint on the sidelines through injury. It was Hutchinson’s first appearance for Wednesday since our 1-0 win over Bolton at Hillsborough on 9 October. With injuries to Chey Dunkley,

Dominic Iorfa and Lewis Gibson, Darren Moore has been short of options to call upon to fill the void at the back. Hutchinson’s return is a major boost for Wednesday and particularly given the busy schedule soon to hit the Owls with rearranged games from over the festive period to factor in. “We were grateful for Sam coming back,”

Moore said. “We rushed him back a little because of the injury sustained to Chey Dunkley, I would have liked to have given Sam a bit more time to get him back into it. “But we are pleased to see him come through 90 minutes unscathed. “For a big part of the season, we have had to play without our central defenders so Sam coming back is a real positive.”

Hecky’s postponement frustration Hutchinson return a positive for Owls

November and fourth in total, meaning United haven’t ran out at Bramall Lane since the success over Bristol City. The Blades boss revealed his side would have been missing

players for all four of the postponed matches but says his belief in the squad at his disposal means he’s more than happy for matches to be played as scheduled, rather than push to get them called off.

Looking ahead, Heckingbottom is now hopeful his side will see the aforementioned fixtures rescheduled fairly during the second half of what promises to be a hectic campaign.

BLADES PRESTON TRIP RE-ARRANGED United’s Sky Bet League Championship fixture at Preston North End will now take place on Tuesday 18th January, 7.45pm kick-off. The game was scheduled for Boxing Day but was postponed due to Covid-19 cases in the North End camp. Tickets already purchased will be valid for the new date. Supporters who cannot attend the re-arranged fixture should return their tickets to United’s Box Office 72 hours prior to the new date’s kick-off time. United’s home fixtures against QPR and Hull City, both postponed due to Covid-related issues earlier this month, are still to be arranged.

Graham honoured

All at Sheffield United FC wish to congratulate vicepresident Graham Moore on his accolade in the New Year’s honours list. Graham, well known in the city for his work with Westfield Health for many years, received an MBE for his services to charity. As well as a vice-president, Graham is a long-term supporter of the Blades and has represented the club at numerous events across the city and further afield. Congratulations Graham Moore MBE.

Luongo set for Owls return Owls midfielder Massimo Luongo has completed his three-match suspension and will be available for selection next time out. The Australian was dismissed during our televised goalless draw with Portsmouth at Fratton Park four weeks ago. Luongo, who has been a regular in the engine room since returning from a hamstring injury in early November, will be available for selection when the Owls host Plymouth on Saturday week.

WARNE: “WE JUST DID ENOUGH” “I didn’t think we were at our best against a really good Bolton side. They’ve come through their covid stuff and were desperate to play, as were we. “The first half was pretty even, I’m obviously disappointed with the goal we conceded. In the second half it was a bit more like us and got the lead. “In the last few minutes, we could’ve drawn it, but we managed to win it from a game I thought looked like a bit of a banana skin. “I thought we put a lot of good crosses into the box, Shane and Chieo especially and you’re always going to give yourselves a chance to win a game if you do that. “Smudge got two good goals, the second an excellent bit of football, I thought if we’d have gone 3-1 up it would have been a lot more comfortable, thankfully we’ve just done enough.”

McSheffrey: we have to react better Gary McSheffrey spoke to the media following a 4-3 defeat to Morecambe in Sky Bet League One. Rovers were beaten despite taking a 3-0 half-time lead after goals from Aidan Barlow, Dan Gardner and Joseph Olowu. On throwing away a comfortable lead: “I’m a bit shellshocked to be honest, it’s happened to me as a player and it is difficult to deal with. “The message at half-time was to stop the ball coming towards us but it was a case of poor game management for us. “We don’t deal with setbacks well enough. We told them not to be surprised if they throw a lot at us but we just didn’t react.” On the hard work that got his team in front: “We made good decisions in the first-half and made the first contacts, which gave us the momentum. “We’re never going to have a better chance to win a game of football, especially away from home. “We played the right balls at the right time and got on every loose ball, but after half-time that all changed.” On how he will go about picking the players up: “There are no hiding places and we have to try and grind through times like these, at the end of the day they have to remember the work put in to go 3-0 up. “The lads need to remember the feeling of celebrating in front of the fans when our goals went in.”

Reach out if you can

Knoyle makes no excuses Kyle Knoyle felt there were no excuses for Rovers 4-3 defeat away to Morecambe. Gary McSheffrey’s side were 3-0 up at half-time after goals from Aidan Barlow, Dan Gardner, and Joseph Olowu but a second half come back from the Shrimps left Rovers heartbroken. On his reflection of the match: “The result was very disappointing and difficult to take after being 3-0 up. We need to take the positives of the first half with us into our upcoming games. We started sharp, worked hard and were clinical in front of goal. “We created chances from the wide areas and we did our defensive duties well in the first half. There was a real togetherness out there. “But in the second half we were nowhere near good enough and we need to make sure that never happens again. “Performing well for 45 minutes is never going to be enough, we need to replicate that first-half across the full 90.” On his disappointment for the fans: “The fans gave us a massive boost and we’re grateful to them for their support. We are gutted we could not get the three points for them. “There are no excuses to be in the position we were in and not come away with three points. “The dressing room is disappointed, but we need to regroup and take the positives from today because we have a game again Saturday.”

Calico Ghost Town guitarist Sean Jeeves joined Rovers' third shirt campaign in conjunction with CALM and LNER to raise awareness of the mental health struggles. Sean’s bandmate James Miller sadly took his own life last year and his passing inspired a number of musicians from across Doncaster to raise awareness of mental health struggles with the DN One Live concert. In November, Rovers, LNER and CALM joined with DN One Live to launch a blackout third shirt which demonstrates that mental health struggles aren’t always visible. Under lights, the club’s badge and CALM logo can be seen on the shirt, but at first glance they are often invisible – just like mental health struggles. Sean said: “I wanted to be part of this campaign because I’ve lost a couple of dear friends to suicide and I just wanted to be part of something which raises awareness of men’s mental health. “It’s important to speak out whenever you’re feeling down. If people don’t talk, I feel like numbers of people completing suicide will climb. It’s so important to reach out whenever you can even if it’s talking to a stranger. “Charities are always at the end of the phone. You don’t have to reach out to someone that you know – I find that hard – but reach out to professionals if you can. “Everywhere you look, there are always charities like CALM. That support is there. “There are always better days ahead.”
