Have your say on plans for Sheffield A consultation on the future of Sheffield city centre is now open, inviting people to share their views on how the city centre should be shaped in the future to adapt and thrive following the challenges of the pandemic. A new Vision for the development of the city centre sets out the diverse role it plays as a hub of commerce and growth in the city, centre for shopping, leisure, and nightlife, as well as home to thousands of people. The five-week consultation sets out our ambitions for the city centre over the next 20 years, focusing on key areas such as housing, regeneration, public transport, and green
spaces. Development work is already underway to transform much of the city centre, including the £470m Heart of the City scheme, as well as funding secured to revitalise the high street and Castlegate through the Future High Streets Fund and the council’s recent successful bid to the Levelling Up Fund. The city centre Vision looks ahead to how city centre spaces can be best utilised to meet the needs of Sheffielders, including plans to create five new distinctive neighbourhoods with high quality, sustainable housing in Neepsend, Wicker Riverside, Castlegate, the Moor and Furnace Hill. More than 20,000 new homes would be
created, relieving pressure on greenfield sites, and helping to meet housing demands for Sheffield’s growing population. The new communities would offer direct access to all the amenities the city centre has to offer, mirroring established and popular neighbourhoods such as Kelham Island. The consultation will also seek opinions on other important areas, including the ‘spine’ of the city centre, which runs from Castlegate to the Moor, plans for key areas such as Fargate and options for the future of the former John Lewis store. The feedback provided in this consultation will be used to inform more detailed plans
for different areas of the city centre and will help to create a shared Vision for the city’s future. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Executive Member for City Futures: Development, Culture and Regeneration, said: “We know how much interest there is in the future of the city centre and that people want a city centre they can feel proud of. “Sheffield is an incredibly distinctive city, and we want to make sure that we develop a Vision for its future that incorporates our unique identity, heritage and culture, whilst making sure it is adaptable and able to face any challenges over the coming years. “We know that
Sheffielders are invested in and care about what happens next and that’s why we’ve launched this consultation to give everyone a chance to read the plans and have a say in what they would like to see. “Through this consultation we want to create a plan for repurposing our city centre that will maintain Sheffield’s strong reputation as a place people want to come to live, work, study and succeed.” The consultation will run until Friday 11th February 2022. People can view the plans and provide comments at www.ourcitycentre-shf. com, by emailing info@ ourcitycentre-shf.com or by calling 08081965105.

I dig, you dig, we dig, they dig, he digs, she digs.... It’s not a beautiful poem - but it’s deep. I saw my wife, slightly drunk, yelling at the TV: “Don’t go in there! Don’t go in the church, you moron!” She’s watching our wedding video again. If I had to get rid of one part of my body, I’d get rid of my spine. Sometimes I think it’s holding me back.

quit smoking adrenalin fuels charity This January, Smokefree Sheffield is telling smokers ready to quit that “You are strong enough” and with free local support, they are three times more likely to succeed. The new campaign, which aims to help people stop smoking, would mean better health for those who quit, as well as more money back into the pockets of those who need it most. Smoking is not only a driver of health inequalities but it is also concentrated among the most disadvantaged groups. People from some of the most deprived areas of Sheffield are three times more likely to smoke than people from the least, so supporting those to quit will help them save money to spend where they really need it. For smokers, quitting this New Year could help put up to £5,000 back in their pocket each year. Smoking has major impacts on health and wellbeing, and for many smokers, the cost of smoking puts an extra burden on their finances too. By quitting smoking, households who are spending money on tobacco will be able to spend more money on food, clothing, housing, education, energy, and medical care. With support to quit, nationally around 428,000 people could be lifted out of poverty if the cost of smoking was returned to the household, including around 235,000 children. Positively, many disadvantaged smokers do want to quit, but they often find it more difficult and are less aware of the support available to them. Although around 60% of smokers want to quit, half try to quit by willpower alone despite this being the least effective method. The new campaign, featuring illustrations of people across Sheffield, will have adverts shown throughout the city on buses, poster sites and social media. This aims to encourage quitters to reach out to the local stop smoking service for the free help and support they’re entitled to receive to help them stop smoking.

HIT the heights, take a leap into adventure or tackle the year’s biggest walking challenge and support South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout in 2022! In a year of exciting fundraising opportunities, Roundabout will be hosting a tandem skydive challenge on April 24. For thrill seekers who at least prefer to be at the end of a rope, the popular Roundabout Abseil is back on May 21. And for people who want to keep their feet firmly on the ground but still want to push themselves to the limit, there’s the Lake District challenge on July 9. The skydive - held at Hilbadstow in North Lincolnshire - is the highest in the UK, reaching a height of 15,000 ft. No experience is necessary - participants will be given full training on the day and will be strapped to a qualified instructor. To secure a place, there’s a deposit of £75 and participants are then asked to raise a minimum target of £325 each. The Roundabout Abseil down Sheffield Hallam University’s 160ft main building in Howard Street will be held on May 21. It costs £20 to sign up and participants are asked to raise a minimum of £100 to support the charity. “We have a great programme of events planned for 2022, including a new Family Sleep Out and the return of our hugely successful Yorkshire Chocolate Festival,” said Roundabout events organiser Emily Bush. “But for people looking for a big challenge, we think the Skydive or the abseil will provide plenty of thrills. Then we have the Lake District Challenge, which will take on seven of the Lake District’s toughest peaks, including a trek to the top of Scafell Pike, the highest in England. It’s going to be a great opportunity to see some of Britain’s most spectacular scenery, 11 hours of walking and 15 miles of mountainous terrain, including an ascent of 1500m in a single day. These events are ideal for anybody who wants to push themselves to the limit and raise money for a great cause at the same time. Places will be limited at all events so we do advise anybody interested to get in touch as soon as possible.” To find out more or to register for any of Roundabout’s 2022 calendar of events visit roundabouthomeless.org/support-us/ roundabout-events/

family business offers complete funeral service
Eric Eyre Funeral Service understands how difficult the process of planning a funeral for a loved one can be and offer a bespoke funeral service, whilst continuing to uphold traditional values. Established since 1864, Eric took over the business in 1955 and has been looking after families in the local community and surrounding areas of Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham ever since, with branches at High Green and Sheffield Lane Top. Available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and with decades of experience in guiding bereaved clients through this difficult time, Eric Eyre provide a professional yet personal service, caring for you and your loved ones while facilitating the necessary funeral arrangements and ensuring your wishes are carried out with care and compassion. Eric Eyre go the extra mile to provide an exceptional service and will take responsibility for ensuring everything is perfectly organised to deliver a fitting tribute to your loved one’s life story. “Just as other aspects of life have evolved, so has society’s approach to funerals, with modern funerals a very different affair to the traditional, formal black-tie events of years gone by,” says Wayne Pickering, manager at Eric Eyre Funeral Service. “For many, a funeral has moved from being a sombre affair to a celebration of life – complete with all that you’d expect from any other celebration, including music, entertainment and laughter. That is why we are always on hand to offer guidance on the many ways we can add a personal touch, just let us know what you would like and we will do our utmost to meet your requirements.” “ With over 20 years’ experience of the industry, and many years’ previous experience with John Fairest, Wayne was offered the opportunity to join Eric as manager in 2017, “I joined John Fairest

as a hearse driver in 1997 and was later promoted to funeral director. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years of service I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted. In September 2017 I was offered the opportunity to join the team at Eric Eyre’s and to ‘move back home’, as I say, as I live local to both branches. It was, and still is, a fantastic opportunity for me to grow and develop an already friendly family run business and provide our local community with a warm and compassionate service.” Completing the team at High Green is Sharon Clayton and Kay Cooper, while Beverley Travis and Ruth Fenlon look after the branch at Sheffield Lane Top, which opened four years ago. “Our aim is to be there for our clients in every way that we can and make sure that their loved one is sent on their final journey exactly as they would have wanted. Your first point of contact will be the person you deal with throughout the process and whether the death has occurred at home, in a hospital or elsewhere, we will guide from the initial arrangement all the way through to directing the funeral. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.” If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service.

All Star Charity Event to return this year Following a sensational launch last year, ‘SIMPLY THE BEST’ will return to the Sheffield City Hall stage on Sunday 2nd October 2022 to raise money for ‘BB with love’ in association with Weston Park Cancer Charity. ‘BB WITH LOVE’ is founded by Michael, Rachel, Sean and Matthew Croke in memory of their one and only, magnificent wife and truly special mum Bev Croke who very suddenly passed away in March 2021 after an 18-month battle with breast cancer. Bev or ‘BB’ as she liked to be called, was a strong, beautiful, and inspirational woman who touched so many people during her lifetime. One of her biggest passions during her cancer treatment was reaching out to others also affected by cancer so they did not feel alone. Bev always put others first and wanted to help everyone and anyone she could. She had a unique ‘magic touch’
that captured people without her even knowing – that’s what made her so incredibly special. Through BB WITH LOVE, the family want to keep Bev’s ‘magic touch’ alive and shining bright by continuing to help others through their cancer journey’s and beyond. All proceeds raised from this spectacular show will go directly to helping cancer patients and their loved ones. From extra after care, more research, additional treatments, alternative remedies, and something extremely close to the Croke’s hearts mental health support! The show will once again star Bev’s son and daughter, Matthew and Rachel Croke alongside a star studded and show stopping line up! Book your tickets today to support this amazing and truly special cause – without you none of this would be possible.
The charity will host a VIP Meet and Greet experience in the City Hall Ballroom prior to the show. VIP guests will have the opportunity to mingle with the stars, enjoy a red-carpet entrance, a drink on arrival, a scrumptious 3 course meal and pre-show entertainment. To book your VIP Meet and Greet experience please contact BB with love directly:
Email: bb-with-love@outlook.com Phone: 07719187489/07850552359 We look forward to seeing you at SIMPLY THE BEST 2022! ‘Forever in Our Hearts’ From BB…With Love xxx Tickets are on general sale now from www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

BLADES BOW OUT OF CUP United’s return to competitive action ended in defeat, but for periods they more than matched a strong Wolves outfit in the FA Cup. Boss Heckingbottom made five changes for the clash in the West Midlands. Berge, McGoldrick, Osborn, Norrington-Davies and teenage defender Gordan all started, with Norwood and Ndiaye named amongst the substitutes. Stevens, Egan and Gibbs White were all absent. United were quickly out of the blocks and had a sight of goal after just 21 seconds, but from Ait-Nouri’s misplaced clearance, Sharp dragged an effort wide on the turn. Moments later, Osborn fashioned space for a cross on the left, only for McGoldrick to glance his header wide of Ruddy’s far post. The best chance came in the 13th minute though, this time Norrington-Davies supplied from the left, but despite a good first touch, Ruddy was quickly out to
deny McGoldrick. The Blades cruelly fell behind though 60 seconds later as Silva capitilised on a poor clearance from Robinson before playing in PODENCE who took a touch before firing past Foderingham. The home side were now more in control and Traore blazed over under pressure from a retreating Robinson. Silva then spurned a clear chance to doubled the hosts lead having combined with the dangerous Podence, with Foderingham getting a touch to deflect his lobbed effort wide of the far post. Ait-Nouri couldn’t hit the target on the angle following a short corner, before Neves took aim from distance, but a trademark effort from the midfielder thankfully drifted wide of Foderingham’s top corner. The major talking point of the first period though came in the 40th minute though, as top-flight referee Tierney chalked off Sharp’s goal
from a corner for an apparent high boot from the Blades skipper. Heckingbottom made a change at the break as Freeman replaced Robinson, a switch that saw Norrington-Davies drop into the back three. United forced a few early corners at the beginning of the second half, but Basham was cautioned having had to halt the progress of an advancing Traore, prior to Burke being introduced for McGoldrick. With 21 minutes remaining, the ball fell

Lee Bullen has been appointed Head Coach of Scottish Championship club Ayr United. Bullen leaves the Owls after his sterling service at Hillsborough across a variety of roles in a stint spanning almost two decades. He joined Wednesday on a free transfer in the summer of 2004 and went on to earn legendary status in these parts. Bullen captained Paul Sturrock’s side to promotion from League One via the play-offs in 2005, one of 148 appearances for Wednesday as a player. The 50-year-old famously played in all 11 positions having taken the goalkeeping gloves during a Championship away game at

Bullen took up the position of our Under-23s manager in August 2020, playing a key role in the development of young Owls rising through the ranks. The native Scot now moves back to his homeland and departs with the sincere thanks and very best wishes of everyone associated with Sheffield Wednesday.
Theo Corbeanu has been recalled from his loan spell with the Owls by parent club Wolves. The Canadian international joined Wednesday in August 2021 on a season-long loan deal but has returned to Molineux with Wolves exercising a recall option in the January transfer window. Redfearn praises Blades resilience United Women head coach Neil Redfearn was pleased with his side’s performance as the Blades kicked off 2022 with a hard-fought 0-0 draw away at full-time side Charlton Athletic in South East London. The Blades were denied all three points in the dying minutes when Addicks goalkeeper Eartha Cumings pushed a Courtney Sweetman-Kirk header onto the crossbar in a match which had few clear chances for either side.“I think they started a little bit better than us and then we came into it and second half I thought we were excellent,” said Redfearn. “I thought our shape was good, we denied them in wide areas and we looked good there. “We had the best chance of the game at the end, it’s a fantastic save to deny Courtz. She had no right to save it and it was a great cross from Jess [Clarke] too.”Clarke was one of several players who returned to the squad, coming on in place of Lucy Watson in the 56th minute while defender Ellie Wilson started the game for her first minutes in a United shirt in over a year after suffering an ACL injury in December 2020. Wilson played 45 minutes as Redfearn made full use of his bench, with Clarke, Tara Bourne, Sophie Walton and Mia Enderby all utilised at various stages in the second half as United looked for a winner.“We used a lot of the players off the bench today and they all played their part, that’s a positive. 0-0 at Charlton is a good result, they don’t lose many at home and you can understand why, but we stopped them playing and that’s credit to us.” Speaking about Wilson’s welcome return to the team, the head coach added, “She was fantastic, we’ve missed her. She’s a good player and we haven’t had her for a year.” In a game which ebbed and flowed in terms of possession, both sides enjoyed spells of pressure without overly testing the opposition goalkeeper until Sweetman-Kirk’s late header, but United stood firm under late Charlton pressure to see out the draw and claim a fifth clean sheet in eleven league games. The resilience and effort shown by his team was a particular part of the performance which pleased Redfearn and offers something to build on as the Blades reach the halfway mark of the campaign. “What pleased me is how together they are and they showed that in abundance. They battled, fought and chased for one another and played some good football too.” While the Blades defence were rock solid, with centreback pairing Sophie Bradley-Auckland and Georgia Robert consistently clearing away several crosses into the box, Redfearn picked out his centre-midfield trio as the key to his team’s performance. “We changed it around a bit. Maddy [Cusack] sat deep and Kasia [Lipka] played a bit further forward. Maddy was excellent in there, the timing of her tackles, she led us for that first half and Kasia looked really bright. “Kasia is a good passer and offers us a lot going forward. Wherever we’ve played Thea [Paul], she produces, she really dug in today and for a little player you’d think she was six foot tall the way she gets stuck in.” United Women return to action this weekend in the team’s first home game of the year against Coventry United on Sunday 16th January, 2pm kick-off at the Technique Stadium, and tickets are available to purchase online now.

WARNE POST-QPR OBITUARY | Glyn Jones - 1936-2021 “I’m really proud of them and I’m a little bit emotional now if I’m honest because I thought the lads gave everything they could to win a football game against a team who are flying high in the Champ. “I thought first half we were the better side although they created the better chances, so in fairness I thank my goalkeeper - who kept us in a couple of times - and there were a couple of last ditch tackles. They just looked more of a threat than we did because I don’t think we created enough. “I thought second half we were a lot better and the longer the game went on, the fitter and stronger we were. “We made changes and went for it. “I was disappointed that it went into extra time. “I thought in extra time I thought we were really good and really disciplined. “The subs all came on and had a really good impact and I was really pleased with everyone who performed today. “I’m disappointed for the lads because I’ve asked them to make memories because their careers are really short. “It would have been great if Woody’s lads saw him play against Tottenham or Icky’s kids saw him play at Liverpool.”
McSheffrey disappointed with below-par performance Gary McSheffrey spoke to the media after the 1-0 defeat to Fleetwood Town in Sky Bet League One. Ellis Harrison’s early second-half goal sealed the win for the visitors, after a below-par display from McSheffrey’s side. On a scrappy game: “We lacked energy and belief, they came and made things happen on the ball which was the biggest difference. “It took us until the 90th minute to force the goalkeeper into a save and if that went in it would have been smash and grab for us. “We put a team out there that we felt had a good balance about it, but we didn’t do anywhere near enough. “Their defence wasn’t being worked enough and it was a bit easy for them, the positive at half-time was that we came in level. On the goal conceded: “We’ve given it away too cheaply and they’ve put the ball in an area where any good striker would be. “They got bodies forward and Harrison was good in the build-up, and he’s had the hunger to get in the box and get on the end of the cross.”

Rotherham United have been deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player, Glyn Jones, aged 85. The Rotherham-born attacker began his career with his hometown club at Millmoor in 1953 and alsoreceived recognition at youth level for England during his career. Having burst onto the scene with obvious potential, Jones struggled for opportunities in his first stint with the Millers and did not make a senior appearance before making the switch to near-neighbours Sheffield United in 1954. He turned out just shy of 30 times for the Blades before returning to the Millers in 1957 when he would finally represent the town in which he was born. His first season back saw him play 14 times and find the net on three occasions, before he made a further nine appearances a season later in 1958/59 adding three more goals to his tally. Jones departed for Mansfield Town in July 1959 and represented the Stags for two years before winding his playing career down with Grantham Town. The Rotherham-born inside forward remained local and passed away after being cared for in Swinton. Everyone at Rotherham United would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to all of Glyn’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. Once a Miller, Always a Miller.
Seaman calls for unity Charlie Seaman has called for unity after defeat to Fleetwood Town on Saturday. The 22-year-old came off the bench for the final 18 minutes of the game to make his first appearance since his injury in early October 2021. The right back turned winger had a positive impact and came close to scoring an equaliser in the dying moments of the game. On the team’s disappointment with the defeat: “We are disappointed to lose because we wanted to put on a good performance for the fans. Our focus turns to Wigan Athletic and we have to stick together and keep working hard. “Football’s a tough game and it is even harder when you are bottom of the league so we need all the support we can get. “I have been watching from the side lines so it has been particularly hard for me. We have to give the fans something to be happy about.” On what he can add to the team with his return: “Being out for three months has been tough but I have tried to help the lads as much as I can. I’ve put a lot of effort into improving myself. “I don’t think people have seen the best of me yet, they have seen glimpses of me building to my potential. My injury came at a bad time and now I have to make sure I bounce back from it. “Hopefully I can bring fresh impetus to the team with my return. Another loss is disappointing, but we must move forward and take it game-by-game. Hard work is key.”
