Sheffield’s Covid memorial tribute plans Plans are in place to create a group of unique, long-lasting and creative memorials in Sheffield as a tribute to those who have died from Covid, those who have lost loved ones and those who have been affected by the pandemic. Sheffield, like those around the world, has been deeply affected by the impact of Covid-19, and the city wants to pay a meaningful tribute to those who have lost their lives and the heroes that have shone in these difficult times. Three areas of memorial activity are being developed by community representatives and organisations from across
the city to make the vision a reality. • A Memorial Archive will be created for Sheffielders to leave memories of loved ones lost during the pandemic, to celebrate our amazing community spirit, and leave other memories from this time. We will be actively gathering people’s stories and want people to come forward to share them. • A unique Memorial Trail taking residents around Sheffield and finishing at a central memorial will be curated too. The group is considering the approach to this as well and how the points on the trail can be used for reflection
and contemplation. Local memorial trails will be influenced by the stories and experiences gathered in the archive. • A centralised memorial is planned for the city centre. How people interact with designing the local memorials will influence what the central memorial will look like. The location is being considered carefully and the group wants Sheffield’s communities to be involved in what any site should look like. These proposals will be discussed at this week’s Cooperative Executive meeting where councillors will be asked to agree the proposals and to
provide a further steer and recommendations about the proposed activity. The key focus of these plans has been to ensure Sheffield has a broad and unique tribute that residents can be proud of, with input from many voices. Community groups and city organisations have been heavily involved to ensure this is meaningful for all of our communities. By the end of January the archive activity will start to take shape and over the spring and summer people will be asked about the memorial trail and how they can be involved in bringing that to fruition. Work will continue at pace
to complete the central memorial part of the project. Linked with the memorial activity is the work of the Compassionate Sheffield project which is about collectively sharing, listening and healing as a city. Compassionate Communities are networks of support comprising of family, friends, neighbours and community members who are faced with death, dying, loss and care-giving. The proposed memorial activity will contribute to establishing Sheffield’s status as a Compassionate City.

The Festival of the Outdoors returns This March the Outdoor City’s annual Festival of the Outdoors returns, celebrating the arrival of spring and all the benefits the season brings to getting outdoors and being part of what Sheffield has to offer across its 61% greenspace. The festival encourages people to get involved in their great outdoors – whether it’s spectating, taking part, supporting their community or just taking more of an interest in being active and outside. Headline events this year are Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (ShAFF - 19/20 March), The Climbing Works International Festival (19/20 March), Pollen Market special (20 March) and the Run for All Sheffield Half Marathon (27 March). Excited yet??
Watch the trailer now... Whether people want to watch some of the best new adventure films; catch a glimpse of world-leading climbers taking on boulder challenges set by Percy Bishton (who was the route setter for the Tokyo Olympics), soak in the atmosphere at Castlegate with a special Pollen Market, or run/spectate at one of the most popular runs in the country – Sheffield has it all in March. On top of the headline events the festival will feature various family, specialist and cultural events to get involved in across the whole of the month of March. There will be dig days and mountain bike try-outs, volunteer events and heritage walks, Sheffield
Beer Festival’s special runs and walks, orienteering, and much more. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Executive Member for City Futures: Development, Culture and Regeneration said: “It’s fantastic that the Festival of the Outdoors can return this year. We work with brilliant independent organisations, voluntary groups and communities with such a variety of activities and events to be part of. “What we’ve got in Sheffield is unrivalled, a diverse and vibrant event calendar, the best partners in outdoors activity and the perfect playground to host them. Greenspace is an important part of our culture, influencing so much about life in Sheffield and
this festival gives us all the chance to come together, both local people and the many visitors who also love it here, to celebrate how amazing The Outdoor City is.” Councillor Alison Teal, Executive Member for Sustainable Neighbourhoods, Wellbeing, Parks and Leisure, said: “After two years of the covid pandemic, local people have never been more reliant on or grateful for their parks, woodlands and greenspaces. Festival of the Outdoors gives us the opportunity to celebrate that, as well as finding new ways to be active and bringing us together with nature, which all lead to positive impacts on our health and wellbeing. “This is also a chance to highlight the responsibility we must all adopt in
respecting and protecting the natural environments around us – the climate emergency and the nature emergency demand that everyone take ownership to look after the incredibly precious green and blue spaces that we’re so lucky to have. I hope we’ll see lots of people getting involved, being inspired and loving our outdoors, not just in March but throughout the whole year.” Two extra special ShAFF collaboration events are also taking place this year, which are supported and subsidised by The Outdoor City so that tickets are offered with a significant reduction in price. There will be one event held on 16 February in the Winter Garden which will feature a Q&A type session with local film makers, as
well as one on 9 March at Sheffield Cathedral which will have music programming from Sheffield’s very own Get Together Festival. More details will be shared soon through The Outdoor City, ShAFF, Get Together and Sheffield Cathedral websites and social media channels. The full festival programme (which is continually updated until the beginning of March) is available at The Outdoor City website at www. theoutdoorcity.co.uk/festivalof-the-outdoors and you can follow @TheOutdoorCity on social channels for all the latest news and information. From around midFebruary a printed guide will be available through independent businesses and community centres throughout the city.

Three conspiracy theorists walk in to a bar... You can’t tell me that’s just a coincidence. What do you call a musician with no girlfriend? Homeless. What do you call a fear of giants? Fee-Fi-Phobia. Me: I think I have a crush on Beyoncé. Her: Whatever floats your boat. Me: No, that’s buoyancy. Yesterday one of my good friends told me I often make people uncomfortable by violating their personal space. It was a really hurtful thing to say and completely ruined our bath. I boiled a funny bone once. It turned into a laughing stock. My grandpa’s last words before he died was “Pints! Gallons! Litres!” That speaks volumes. So many people these days are too judgemental. I can tell just by looking at them. I arrived early at the restaurant last night. “Do you mind waiting for a bit?” The manager asked. “Not at all” I replied. “Good, take these pizzas to table 6,” he said. My friend lost his job at the dairy farm because of his erratic behaviour. He was a danger to himself and udders.

New scheme launched to help chair appointed close the digital divide in Sheffield to enquiry A new scheme has been launched by Sheffield City Council which will provide grants to the voluntary, community and faith sectors to help digitally excluded adults get online. The Covid-19 pandemic has reinforced how reliant people have become on digital technologies for accessing public services, keeping in touch with family and friends or working in a range of jobs. It has also exacerbated the digital divide between those who have access to digital services and those who do not. There are many barriers to getting online and one of the main barriers is access to devices such as laptops and tablets. As part of the Device Loan Grant Scheme, eligible voluntary, community, and faith organisations can apply for Windows laptops or Android tablets (subject to availability) which they will be able to loan out to adults they work with. In addition to the provision of devices, successful organisations will receive a one off set up allowance of £250 per device which can be used for a range of purposes. This might be used to fund connectivity, procure additional software, training materials or something else, as long as it directly supports the scheme. The latest scheme is another step the Council has taken to help close the digital divide in Sheffield. Last year it provided significant financial support to enable thousands of school children to get online when schools were closed – providing more than 3,000 devices and connectivity in partnership with the Laptops for Kids initiative. In January 2021, a Digital Inclusion summit, led by Councillor Terry Fox, also brought together more than 100 individuals and businesses in the city from various sectors to collectively address the digital divide in Sheffield.

Speaking about the latest grant, Cllr Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “We know that Covid has shone a light on digital exclusion in Sheffield, which is why the Council has been working hard to close the digital divide in our city – with last year’s work on the Laptops for Kids initiative and now the Device Loan Grant Scheme. “I’m delighted that, by launching this scheme, we can once again demonstrate our commitment to supporting our communities by closing the digital divide. “This will give much-needed resources to those voluntary, community and faith organisations already working with communities in Sheffield and help them support adults already using their services to get online and contribute to Sheffield’s recovery from the pandemic.” To be eligible, organisations must be engaged in supporting adults in Sheffield and will have to meet one or more of the following outcomes:

Moore: Postderby ram blades unbeaten run Darren Plymouth talking points United’s unbeaten run in the Sky Bet Championship came to an unfortunate end against Wayne Rooney’s Derby County on Saturday. With Paul Heckingbottom absent following a positive Covid test earlier in the week, Tom Lawrence’s second half brace proved the difference in an encounter that lacked any real quality. United made three changes for the first league outing since before Christmas following the FA Cup loss at Wolves last Sunday. Egan, Norwood and Ndiaye all returned to the starting XI, with Gordon, Hourihane and Osborn dropping to the bench. Characteristically, the Blades were soon on the front foot and Ndiaye was unlucky to see his charge down from Allsop’s attempted clearance fly out of play for a throw-in. Norrington-Davies then won a throw high up the field on the left and from
Robinson’s long one, Egan rose highest but his header was comfortably saved. The game was endto-end but lacked clear goalscoring opportunities, although Ndiaye crafted an opener for Sharp after excellent work in his own half by McGoldrick. Derby’s first sight of goal was a half chance as Lawrence looked to latch on to Basham’s inadvertent flick on from Allsop’s punt forward, but it drifted harmlessly wide. The best chance of the contest fell United’s way moments after the half hour mark. Egan flicked on Robinson’s hurl into the penalty area, but unfortunate Sharp couldn’t generate enough power with his header to trouble Allsop. Both teams then had chances in stoppage-time. Lawrence saw a free-kick blocked by the wall and following a break, Ndiaye saw another shot blocked by the retreating Ebosele. The second period was
a very slow burner with neither side creating any chances of note, but in the 69th minute, it swung decisively in the hosts favour. LAWRENCE fired home with a left footed effort having embarked on a terrific solo run that saw him advance past a number
of attempted challenges. United made positive changes in a bid to spark a revival but the game was effectively put to bed on 78 minutes. Ebosele this time ploughed forward having got the better of Hourihane and from Forsyth’s pass LAWRENCE to
aim and curled another unstoppable effort into Foderingham’s top corner. The Blades disappointing afternoon ended with Ndiaye being carded deep into stoppage-time to compound an already frustrating day at the office.
BOOTHROYD DELIGHTED TO JOIN BLADES
Speaking for the first time following his appointment, Aidy Boothroyd says he is delighted to be part of a club that he believes is positive moving in the right direction. The Yorkshireman who was most recently in

charge of England’s U21s, joins United as coach mentor and consultant as part of an Academy restructure that has seen Derek Geary promoted to Academy Manager and Michael Collins appointed as the new U23s lead coach.
The 50-year-old has enjoyed seven profitable years working for the Football Association, but says the lure of club football, particularly joining a club like the Blades was too good an opportunity to turn down.
Boothroyd has worked with two notable former Blades who have come through the ranks during the aforementioned period and the exWatford boss believes United have the three key ingredients to continue to successful producing
homegrown talent.
ON THE GAME I don’t think anyone would deny us those three points today. We dominated the game and although Plymouth scored two goals, I never felt like we were not going to win that match. We had too much for them today, we came for the three points and we have the three points. I said in my press conference yesterday and in my programme notes the importance of getting back out on the training ground, putting the work in day in, day out, getting the rhythm back after the disruption, and we have seen the results of that work today. TACTICS We’ve played Plymouth three times already this
Owls pair named in Team of the Week Owls duo Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Massimo Luongo have been named in the League One Team of the Week. The pair put in strong performances on Saturday as Wednesday beat Plymouth 4-2 at Hillsborough. Mendez-Laing bagged his first goal for
season and I wanted to give them something different to think about today and it was nice to see what we did come off. Flo wasn’t quite fit and I looked at Sylla in training and thought he can provide something different down the middle, something that they didn’t expect. He was a threat today and he took his goal really well. I was pleased for them all and for the lads who scored, it’s always a positive to share goals around.
play Oxford and we saw the benefits today. The players had a long time away from the training ground, the rhythm and routine was disturbed and we have seen the signs of getting these things back.
BEING BACK AT HOME We haven’t had a game here for seven weeks so it was really pleasing to put on a performance like that today in front of our own supporters. The plan was to go for them and the players did that, Plymouth couldn’t really settle but we made it really difficult for them. It’s all about hard work and we will continue that next week, we have a full week’s work before we
STAYING LEVEL HEADED Win, lose or draw, I have to try and stay the same and focus on the next game because that’s the most important one. It’s something I believe in and it’s the way I work. I don’t get too high after a win and I don’t get too low after a defeat. The mental side of the game is very important in modern football and we do a lot of that with the players. When Plymouth came back to 2-1, then 3-2, it gave them something to believe in to try and get something from the game. But we managed the game out, we saw it through, and we have got what we deserved.
the Owls with a clinical curling finish in the 40th minute of the game. The winger also laid on an assist for Sylla Sow to open the scoring for Wednesday against the Pilgrims. Luongo was just as effective at the weekend, playing Mendez-Laing through to score the Owls’ second of the
game and winning five aerial duels over the 90 minutes. The Team of the Week is decided by statistics from data website WhoScored. com, giving each player an overall rating out of 10 based on their performance. MendezLaing and Luongo earned ratings of 8.39 and 8.38 respectively.

History of women’s football Sheffield as one of the nine UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 host cities is taking part in a National Lottery funded project to uncover the hidden history of women’s football in a summer of celebration of the game, its players and communities. • £500,000 from National Lottery to share 141 years of women’s football Sheffield City Council joins UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 summer of celebration in partnership with The FA Stories of pioneering women and girls will be recorded for the first time Across the city towering columns will showcase women’s involvement in the game from 1850’s to present day In partnership with The FA, Sheffield City Council has joined a number of other organisations across England for the project which has been awarded £500,000 by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. It’s an important year for women’s football, as England hosts the UEFA Women’s EURO and the Lionesses mark their 50th anniversary. However, the history of the game goes back a lot further than many might think. This year also marks 141 years since women’s football was first played professionally. The National Lottery funded project aims to challenge the common perception of women’s football being ‘new’ and change the nation’s understanding of ‘the English game’. In addition to the National Lottery funding, The FA and host cities have contributed nearly £600,000 to the project, making a total of £1,060,580. For the very first time, information about every England player, captain, goal scorer and match score since 1972 will be researched, recorded and shared alongside the information that already exists about men’s football. Hosted on England Football’s website the record will continue to be updated, ensuring future female players are part of the nation’s footballing story. The project will particularly explore the role of the LGBTQ+ community. Sheffield is one of nine UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 host cities, taking part in a fantastic range of community events and celebrations this summer. Sheffield, the original home of football, has the oldest Football Club which was founded in 1857. The city also holds the accolade for the invention of the crossbar, which was invented in 1875. The first women’s match in Sheffield was played in May 1895 when two touring teams from The British Ladies Football Club (from London) went head to head at the Sheaf House Ground, Bramall Lane, Sheffield, watched by around 3,000 spectators. To support the bid for the National Lottery funding Sheffield City Council and partners from across the city developed a cultural heritage programme to run alongside the UEFA Women’s Euros in the summer. Fans from around the world will be warmly welcomed with a women’s and girls’ football festival, which will see Sheffield’s amateur players take on visitors from the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland – the Group C countries whose matches will be played at Bramall Lane. Sheffield Home of Football (SHOF) and Sheffield Hallam University will host a community conference featuring speakers from some of the best-known names from the world of women’s football. Sheffield Theatres will welcome visitors to the city with actors on Tudor Square in 19th century footballers clothing and a choir. There will also be memory films, music, oral history, theatre productions, circus performances, and a whole lot more to see and do.

Gary McSheffrey spoke to the media following a 2-1 defeat at home to Wigan Athletic in Sky Bet League One. A second-half Omar Bogle goal wasn’t enough to earn Rovers a positive result against the promotion contenders.
On the energy his side showed: “It was a big improvement in terms of our work rate and the levels we reached to compete. “The game is won and lost in both boxes and we switched off on two occasions which resulted in goals. “I felt we gained in confidence before half-time and matched them, but we missed that bit of composure when we got into good areas.” On not giving up at 2-0: “Omar (Bogle) came on and we’re pleased he got himself a goal, we found a way to put a bit of pressure on them. “We saw a response from the players and we looked like we were growing into it but they used their experience to see it out. “I’d like to think we’ve given the fans something to hold onto in the fact that we gave it everything from start to finish.”

Paul Warne talks to the press after the defeat at Fleetwood Town... “It’s a difficult one really. I thought – and this is no offence to Fleetwood – we were the team trying to win it. “I thought we should have taken a chance early on and we didn’t. The longer the game goes on, we’re trying to win it and possibly risking bodies forward. “I just didn’t think we created enough clear cut chances second half. We got in really good positions and one-v-ones out wide but we just didn’t create enough possibly to win it. “I blame myself. I possibly could have been braver with my substitutes but I felt at that time we had pretty good control of the game but without creating a great deal. “Overall, I’m disappointed that we lost but we don’t have a divine right to win every game.” Warne’s apology to home fans for actions of certain individuals during minute’s silence… “As you know me quite well, I was hugely embarrassed with how one or two individuals behaved during the minute’s tribute. “I know that we’ve offended some Fleetwood fans and that wasn’t our intention. We’re talking about less than one percent of our fanbase. “I hope that they don’t regard that as character of all our fans – that definitely is not the case.”
