COUNCIL STATEMENT AFTER SUE GRAY REPORT A cross-party committee of councillors was recently established, following Kate Josephs’ statement on 14 January about a gathering in her former role at the Government’s Covid-19 Taskforce. Following the release of Sue Gray’s update is week (31/1), the Leader of the Council, Cllr Terry Fox, has made the following statement: “It’s clear

from Sue Gray’s update today (31/1) that the event from December 17, 2020, is going to be investigated by the Metropolitan Police. The council’s cross-party committee is due to meet again tomorrow, and they will consider Sue Gray’s update as part of their deliberations. We now need to let the committee, chaired by Cllr Julie Grocutt, do its work.”

The Sue Gray report said: “No conclusions should be drawn, or inferences made from this other than it is now for the police to consider the relevant material in relation to those incidents. The police have also said this does not in itself mean that they will decide to take further action or that there has necessarily been a breach of the regulations”.

News, Information and Advice major highway code changes

As of Saturday 29 January, The Highway Code is changing. These advisory changes have been implemented to improve safety for people walking, cycling and horse riding. South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) is urging all road users to make sure they understand the changes, no matter what form of travel they take. Manager of SYSRP Joanne Wehrle said: “The Highway Code is essential reading for all. It is important that all road users are aware of the Code and are considerate towards each other. Under the new changes, every road user still has a responsibility to keep themselves and each other safe, and the changes mean being ready to give priority, leave space and be considerate of others. Ultimately, knowing and applying The Highway Code will help keep our roads safe for everyone.” As part of the new rules, a hierarchy of road users has been introduced to ensure those who can do the greatest harm have the greatest responsibility to reduce the danger or threat they may pose to others. This means: • Giving people crossing and waiting to cross and cyclists going straight ahead, priority when turning in and out of junctions • Giving plenty of space when passing people cycling and horse riders • And making sure we’re acting with responsibility and respect to all road users Specifically: • You now should give people crossing and waiting to cross and cyclists going straight ahead priority when turning in and out of junctions. • You now should leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking people cycling at speeds of up to 30mph and give them more space when overtaking at higher speeds. • When driving, you should now pass horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles at speeds under 10 mph and allow at least 2 metres of space. • You should now allow at least 2 metres of space and keep to a low speed when passing a pedestrian who is walking in the road. • Car users should now open their doors with the hand furthest from the door, to help them look over their shoulder to see cyclists or pedestrians nearby. • People may cycle in the centre of the lane or two abreast for their own safety, whilst allowing others to overtake when it is safe for them to do so. Joanne added: “These changes aim to reinforce what good road users already do. They do not just offer guidance on how we want users to behave, they signpost the kind of community we want to live in; towns cities and villages that are friendly and safe for people to ride, walk and cycle.” The changes can be viewed in full by visiting: www.gov.uk/dft/highway-code-changes Over 60? public urged to protect local spaces There’s huge untapped potential to level up access to nature for people living in our towns and cities by giving local parks the same sorts of protection from development as national parks. A little known yet hugely powerful rule allows local communities to ringfence their recreation grounds, community gardens, fields popular with dog walkers and other locally valued green spaces from development. And yet this provision – contained within the National Planning Policy Framework and designed specifically to protect the pockets of nature most valued by local people – is, curiously, close to unknown. That is why CPRE, the countryside charity, is calling on the government to encourage all local authorities to promote the use of the Local Green Space designation as widely as possible. It is a unique clause in planning rules that empowers local people to apply national parkstyle protection from development to their most valued local green spaces. And yet, in the most nature-deprived neighbourhoods, where it could have huge value for poorer communities, it is a tool that is barely ever used. New research by CPRE has, for the first time, mapped the total number of Local Green Spaces protected. Over 6,500 have been created since 2012, often to protect valued land on the edge of villages. But the research shows that inner cities and densely populated urban areas, which are more likely to be populated by poorer communities and people of colour, are the least likely to have benefited - the poorest regions in the north had the least. That’s why this is such an important mechanism for levelling up – much more needs to be done to help all communities, and particularly those in the north, preserve their last, and often only, patches of green. Local Green Spaces are small parcels of land, close to where people live, that are demonstrably special to their community, for reasons that can include their beauty, historical significance, recreational value, tranquillity or richness of wildlife. It is a neighbourhood planning tool with unique power, because it implies being valued by local people is in itself a strong enough reason to protect small patches of green space. Crispin Truman, chief executive of CPRE, the countryside charity, said: “This is a solution to levelling up that has been hiding in plain sight; a planning superpower in the hands of ordinary people. All that people have to prove is they use and value the land for it to be eligible to be protected like it’s a national park.”

yorkshire water launches fund

Yorkshire Water has launched a second vulnerability partnership fund, which will allocate up to Ј35,000 to local charities and organisations working with vulnerable people. The fund will support charities and organisations in raising awareness of Yorkshire Water’s priority services register (PSR) and encouraging people to sign up to the free service. Last year’s fund saw seven charities encourage over 1,500 sign ups to the water company’s PSR. The priority services help customers that might need extra support when communicating with Yorkshire Water, those who may be significantly impacted if they can’t access water for a short period of time, or people who would like to tailor their account so that a loved one or carer can manage it on their behalf. Yorkshire Water’s vulnerability fund allows each organisation to bid for up to £5,000 in funding. Ash Roberts, public safety and safeguarding manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “Customers often tell us how important the priority services are to them, so we want to raise as much awareness as possible and ensure they can be accessed by anyone that needs them. By registering for the priority services, customers can explain any additional needs they may have, whether that is naming someone else to take care of their account, informing us they require Braille or audio letters, or telling us they need additional support if their water supply is interrupted. Signing up to the PSR helps us understand customer needs in the event of planned work, or an emergency repair, so we can make sure they get the assistance they need as soon as possible. To help us raise awareness of these priority services, we’re looking for likeminded organisations and charities to come forward and bid for our vulnerability fund. Applicants should have a plan for raising awareness and encouraging sign ups to the priority services register. It may be the funding compliments existing activity, is bespoke, or is part funding towards something larger, but the aim is to ensure people in Yorkshire who may benefit are aware of it and able to sign up.” Applications for the fund will close on 4th Feb and more information about the PSR and the application process can be found on the partner resource site www.yorkshirewater.com/partnerresources

council launches flood action plan

Sheffield City Council, in partnership with organisations across South Yorkshire, is today launching an ambitious plan to reduce flood risk and tackle the climate emergency head on. The Connected by Water Action Plan will help to protect lives, homes, businesses and our environment from the impact of climate change and flood risk. The plan was first conceived after floods devastated South Yorkshire in 2019. Communities were evacuated from their homes, precious belongings ruined, businesses devastated, infrastructure disrupted and people unable to return to their homes for months. As the water subsided, communities, businesses and senior leaders realised they were experiencing the impacts of climate change first-hand and made a commitment to work together to tackle the issue. Local councils, the Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water and other organisations formed a partnership and work began on the action plan, which combines 144 actions and 100 projects with a total investment of £400 million to better protect over 17,000 homes, businesses and infrastructure across South Yorkshire. The plan, which looks at the whole of the South Yorkshire region and considers how water can be managed from the peaks to the sea, brings together experts and resource from across the region to manage flood risk. It aims to tackle the climate emergency head on by combining the construction of flood walls and barriers with nature-based solutions. Schemes ongoing in Sheffield include: • Upper Don Flood Alleviation Scheme Phase 1 – under construction • Upper Don Flood Alleviation Scheme Phases 2 & 3 – in development • Sheaf & Porter catchment Flood Alleviation Scheme – in development • Blackburn Brook Flood Alleviation Scheme – in development

Sheffield Beer Week Returns Across the City in 2022 After a tumultuous 2021, Sheffield Beer Week sees a welcome return to the city in March 2022 (7th to 13th).

The event will be a much-needed boost for the city, the hospitality and brewing sector. Sheffield Beer Week’s ongoing

strands include Beer and Food, Community and Heritage; with additional 2022 strands including their Harrogate Beer Week collaborative focus, creating welcoming spaces for everyone in the beer scene with Out & About (@ outandaboutsheff ) and International Women’s Day events and celebrating their access to vital green spaces under The Outdoor City banner. There’ll be a continued intertwining via a hybrid of online and in-person elements with a key online talk

exploring beer and brewing research with leading international professionals. From Lars Marius Garshol (Norwegian farmhouse brewing), Dr Christina Wade (Irish beer history), Ron Pattinson (beer historian), Tim Holt (The Brewery History Society) and the Sheffield Feminist Archive. Sheffield’s collaborative partnership with Harrogate Beer Week will showcase North Yorkshire breweries in South Yorkshire with a friendly cross-county beer week focal point, highlighting the positive nature of Beer Tourism. Sheffield breweries Heist Brew Co and

Lost Industry will be brewing up beers for International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day (@IWCBD / unitebrew. org) on International Women’s Day – 8th March (look out for additional events). As Visit Sheffield’s The Outdoor City hosts a month long celebration of the green spaces and adventure trails in the city through March, Sheffield Beer Week will showcase beer and history walks (via local historian Dave Pickersgill, editor of CAMRA’s ‘Sheffield’s Real Heritage Pubs’), a running and beer social club and highlight the ‘Right to Roam’ campaign (righttoroam.

org.uk) alongside the 90th anniversary of the Kinder Mass Trespass with Sunday Times best-selling author Nick Hayes (The Book of Trespass), Saint Mars of the Desert brewery, Sheffield Beer Week and Hop Hideout. On the weekend of 4 to 5 March, to kick-off the week, Sheffield’s craft beer festival, Indie Beer Feast launches. A celebration of great independent craft beer with brewery bars, street food, low intervention wines and fine cider. The beer festival champions and supports The Everyone Welcome initiative. leading UK awardwinning beer writer Adrian Tierney-Jones will be heading up to host pop-up tastings and to judge the Indie Beer Feast ‘Beer of the Festival’; this year’s theme is Hope. Breweries pouring include Sheffield outfits Saint Mars of the Desert, Lost Industry and Abbeydale. Plus bars from Women on Tap showcasing female led breweries and beer collaborations and Craft Beer Newcastle highlighting a myriad of brilliant breweries from the North East. In addition to Manchester’s Pomona Island, Liverpool’s Neptune,

Derbyshire’s Torrside and Pentrich, Norfolk’s Duration, Cheshire’s Mobberley Brewhouse, Nottingham’s Black Iris, Wales’ Wilderness, Scotland’s Fyne Ales and Donzoko Brewing, London’s Rock Leopard and North Yorkshire’s Turning Point Brew Co. They’ll also be a bigger focus on cider with both Ross and Hogan’s hosting bars and low intervention wines with Naturally Wines showcasing their Italian portfolio. Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury BILLY LEADS THE WAY FOR BLADES Darren Moore: A dominant performance from start to finish, saw United recorded a comfortable away maximum at London Road on Saturday evening. And it was a memorable night for Billy Sharp too who opened the scoring to become the leading goalscorer in the Championship, overtaking David Nugent in the process, with Callum Morton’s late own-goal ensuring the points returned up the A1 to South Yorkshire. Boss Heckingbottom named an unchanged team following the success over Luton Town, with the only change to the 18 on duty against the Hatters coming on the bench where goalkeeper Davies who joined in midweek replaced Eastwood. It was a characteristic fast start from the Blades, who forced a corner from each side inside the opening 90 seconds, the second was flicked on but referee

Whitestone adjudged Egan to have fouled his man at the back post. United continued to press forward and commit bodies and Norwood’s bending cross from the right was inches away from picking out Sharp. The visitors continued to enjoy the majority of the possession and more importantly territory but having slightly overhit a cross aimed at Sharp, Brewster was forced to hobble off with what appeared to be a hamstring issue and he was subsequently replaced by McGoldrick who himself had a sight of goal within 60 seconds of his introduction. The shots were now coming with regularity and Benda made a good save to deny Bogle from Norwood’s excellent ball over the top, before Thompson put his body on the line to deflect Hourihane’s well struck strike wide for a corner. As the half hour approached, the home side registered a

first attempt on target but from distance Foderingham was equal to a dipping effort from Fuchs. Somehow Peterborough continued to hold out, with Bogle heavily involved. Knight blocked an effort at the expense of a corner, before Benda spilled a low effort, but it was a third attempt in as many minutes that was the best as he danced past Tomlinson only to drag an effort wide of the far post, with skipper Sharp wanting a cutback. United’s sixth corner of the first period yielded the best opening though but having played it short, Egan headed over from Norwood’s inch perfect centre. But having dominated the opening 40 minutes, it was Posh who created a clear sight of goal themselves, but Foderingham was smartly off his line to smoother a Clarke-Harris dink after Poku had slide the forward in on goal. Two minutes of added time

were signalled, but the home side held out to go in at the break level. On 54 minutes United deservedly hit the front and it was no surprise who broke the deadlock. Ndiaye, Norwood, Norrington-Davies and Hourihane were all involved in the build-up and after Posh failed to clear their lines, SHARP controlled, spun and fired home into Benda’s bottom corner to become the leading scorer in the Championship since the second tier was rebranded. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, although not as many clear-cut chances were coming United’s way, despite the continued, although only a fortunate deflection by Knight denied Norwood a first goal of the season after a fabulous strike from distance. Hourihane was cautioned for halting the progress of a marauding Thompson, before Fleck and McBurnie replaced

Ndiaye and Sharp, but not before the skipper had been denied by Benda after Grant had lost possession in his own half, McGoldrick also saw his rebound saved by the retreating Swansea loanee. But on 81 minutes, the points were in the bag for United as MORTON stabbed inadvertently into his own net after Basham had won the first header at the back post from Norwood’s inviting corner and in truth it was the least United deserved as the remainder of the contest, including three minutes of stoppage time, elapsed without too much incident of note as the Blades comfortably saw the game out. Blades: Foderingham, Basham, Brewster (McGoldrick 22), Sharp (McBurnie 78), Egan, Norwood, Robinson, Bogle, Hourihane, Ndiaye (Fleck 71), NorringtonDavies. Unused: A. Davies, Baldock, Berge, Gordon.

GOODE NEWS FOR THE BLADES Paul Heckingbottom has beaten the January transfer deadline to further bolster his defensive options. The Blades have added Premier League defender Charlie Goode after agreeing a loan deal until

the end of the 2021/22 season with parent club Brentford. Goode’s arrival follows last week’s capture of goalkeeper Adam Davies as Heckingbottom continues to evolve his Blades squad.

The 26-year-old central defender has played six times in the Premier League for the Bees this season after helping Thomas Frank’s side to promotion last season. Blades football manager, Heckingbottom,

commented: “We are delighted to bring in Charlie, he offers us good competition in an area of the pitch where we are a little light. He has good experience, including at the top level, and will be comfortable in a number

of positions across the back line, whether we play with three or four at the back.” The former Fulham youth prospect began his senior career in nonleague, with his break in

ON THE GAME I don’t think anyone would argue that we thoroughly deserved to win the game. We played on the front foot and caused Ipswich, who are a good side, some real problems. The work we did on the training ground has paid off and that’s why I’m such a fan of getting a full week of work before the game. We’re not going to get that in the month ahead and it’s something we will deal with. The three points today are what mattered, my only real critique would be that we could have scored at least one more goal but you have to be happy with the win and the clean sheet. ON THE NEW RECRUITS I don’t like singling the professional game arriving in 2015 when he left Hendon to join Scunthorpe United. In 2019 he enjoyed a successful loan spell at Northampton Town which eventually turned into a permanent switch to Sixfields. The former England C international helped Northampton to promotion from League Two after a successful playoff victory over Exeter City at Wembley. His form drew attention from Brentford who paid a fee

players out but I thought the centre backs played really well. They did what it says on the tin and that’s what you want from your defenders. That’s what gives you the platform for victory. The concentration levels were spot-on and again that’s what you need. We identified the defence as an area we wanted to improve and as I said yesterday, credit to the chairman for allowing us to do it. They got their blocks in, their positional play was excellent.

Tuesday’s game against Morecambe. With Lee Gregory, he picked up a foot injury at Oxford last week and credit to him for playing on but it’s not really got any better in the week so we had to leave him out today.

ON THE MONTH AHEAD We go into February with an incredibly busy schedule, we go five weeks now playing Saturday and midweek so the whole squad will have to be right on their toes and be ready when called upon. The one enforced change we had to make in the game today was Marvin Johnson, he went down and we had to take him off so we’ll get him assessed ahead of

ON THE FANS They have a massive part to play and we all say thank you to them. It’s a time of year just after Christmas where money is tight and we have a lot of home games so we appreciate their support very much. I thought the atmosphere was great again today, over 23,000 in the stadium and we’re pleased they have gone home happy. They want to see their team give their all and today was a real hard-fought win. We defended our box really well, we were resolute and disciplined and deservedly won the game.

Lys loaned OUT Striker Lys Mousset has departed Bramall Lane after securing a loan move to Italy. United have agreed a deal with Serie A side Salernitana which will see the Frenchman see out the rest of the 2021/22 campaign in Salerno. The paperwork was completed on Monday afternoon. This season Mousset has made seven appearances, scoring three goals, but hasn’t featured for the Blades since early November. He initially joined United from Bournemouth in July 2019.

JEBBO RETURNS

United have increased options at the top end of the pitch after recalling striker Daniel Jebbison from his loan spell at Burton Albion. With Rhian Brewster and Iliman Ndiaye both being withdrawn through injury in United’s victory over Peterborough at the weekend, Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom has exercised an option to bring Jebbison back to Bramall Lane. Jebbison, who netted the winner for United at Everton on his senior debut last season, has impressed at the Pirelli Stadium this campaign. The 18-year-old has netted nine goals for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s side who are currently 10th in League One.

DENNIS OUT FOR THE SEASON Dennis Adeniran is set to miss the rest of the season after undergoing an operation last week. The 23-year-old confirmed the news over the weekend and manager Darren Moore has rued the misfortune of the popular midfield man. In an extract from his programme notes for Tuesday’s game against Morecambe, Moore writes: “Dennis is out for the rest of the season and the whole group will rally around him because there is nothing worse for a player than to be on the treatment table for a long period of time. “It is an incredibly frustrating experience and one I know first-hand because I tore my ACL as a player and was out for months. “You just want to be out there performing and to have that taken away can take its toll mentally as well as physically. “You are looking at things from afar, you are analysing situations, areas where you know you can help but you can’t and that’s tough to deal with. “That’s why it’s vital to have the right support and a structured plan of action in place. You need light at the end of the tunnel, working hand in hand with the medical and sports science departments. “Dennis brings something different to the team and to have someone of that ilk ruled out for the rest of the season is a bitter blow. We all wish him well as he starts that road to recovery.”

Osei-Tutu completes Deadline Day loan move from Arsenal Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the loan capture of Arsenal wing back Jordi Osei-Tutu, who joins on Deadline Day on a deal until the end of the 2021/22 campaign, subject to Premier League, EFL and FA ratification. The Millers had already bolstered their ranks with the acquisition of highly-rated Irish striker Georgie Kelly and have now further added to their squad with the temporary addition of the Gunners’ prospect. The 23-year-old has already tasted football in the EFL during loan stints with Cardiff City and Nottingham Forest, joining the latter at the start of the 2021/22 campaign. His early footballing experiences came in Germany with VFL Bochum where he made 21 appearances and scored five goals during a temporary stint with the second division outfit in 2019/20. The Slough-born full back began his Academy career with Reading before being picked up by the Emirates Stadium-club, where he signed his first professional contract in October 2015. Osei-Tutu is another player the Millers have tracked closely in recent months and end their pursuit to land his signature with his Deadline Day signing.

McSheffrey reflects on transfer window A busy January transfer window for Rovers culminated with the signing of exciting striker Reo Griffiths on deadline day. “I think we’ve got some really good prospects in the building with a good attitude and good qualities,” he said. “We said all along that we wouldn’t rush too much and we wouldn’t prioritise quantity over quality but I think we’ve got both. I think we’ve brought in some real quality, but we’ve also got a good amount of players in which give us good strength in depth. “There’ve been a few hurdles and obstacles but we feel we’ve got some really good additions in and some good potential in terms of the future of the club with five permanent and we’ve brought in three loans who will come in and make an impact. “It’s been a strange time to come into management just before a transfer window, but I want to thank Graham [Younger], Frank [Sinclair] and James [Coppinger] for their support during the window and of course Terry [Brammall], David [Blunt] and Gavin [Baldwin] for enabling us to get the players in.” Griffiths became the eighth addition on Monday following Kieran Agard, Josh Martin, Jonathan Mitchell, Ollie Younger, Adam Clayton, Mipo Odubeko and Ben Jackson through the door. The striker penned a two-and-a-half year deal after leaving French side Olympique Lyon. “He’s a young English player who has gone abroad from a top team. He’s been abroad for a few years and now he wants to come back and make a name for himself in English football,” McSheffrey added. “He’s a young, exciting, talented player and he knows where the net is. We want to give him the opportunity in English football to do that at senior level. “He had options, but it was so refreshing to me that he was committed to us, wanted to get here and get the deal done and you can see that hunger in the way he’s trained. “He’s fresh, he’s young, he’s hungry and you take those calculated risks over a player who might just be coming in for the sake of getting a team. He’s going to be a good option for us.”
