£1M ARTS & CULTURE FUNDING FOR THE REGION £1m funding from the Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) for Arts, Culture and Heritage projects has been allocated in South Yorkshire, which means a wide range of inspiring activities and events are planned to take place over the coming months in our local area.

This is the first time that the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has made specific funding available to the arts, culture and heritage sector, in recognition of the difficulties the sector has faced through the pandemic, and the key role which cultural industries

can play in recovery and renewal, both economic and social.

A report conducted by the University of Sheffield in 2021 revealed that arts , culture and heritage in South Yorkshire has been badly affected by the pandemic, with an estimated sector output loss of 22 per cent – which is five per cent more than the UK average. Industry experts say this is because South Yorkshire has the highest share of jobs in this sector.

South Yorkshire Mayor Dan Jarvis said: ‘I am delighted to see the funds I fought so hard to

carve out for the sector, be used to stimulate such a broad range of activity across South Yorkshire, and benefit those who have fell through the gaps of government support. We have some fantastic work going on across our region, and it is vital that it continues, that it grows, and that everyone is able to take part and access it, as we emerge from the pandemic.’

Sheffield City Council recognised the difficulties faced by freelance artists and creatives and awarded £120,000 to the Freelancer Fund Round 2. In total, 75 creatives will be supported

directly along with five organisations working on collaborative projects. The remaining £160,000 in Sheffield has been divided equally between the four artforms of film, performing arts, live music and writing including supporting independent writing and publishing through the Off the Shelf festival, film productions, theatrical performances and live music from independent bands and artists at the Leadmill.

In Rotherham, the funding has been put towards a combination of community arts, music and live events taking place in the next

couple of months.

Doncaster has allocated its funding to a wide range of activities providing experiences for young people whose health and wellbeing has been affected by the pandemic; a celebration of Doncaster’s history in glassmaking; plus programmes to engage people in creative industry experiences to enhance social behaviours and raise career aspirations.

Tramlines Festival Announces Second Wave Of 2022 Artists Including Full Comedy Programme Tramlines, Sheffield’s biggest city-based music festival has announced its latest round of music acts and the full comedy lineup for the 2022 event at Hillsborough Park in Sheffield from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th July.

Joining the party is Bad Boy Chiller Crew (Friday), Lady Leshurr (Friday), Alfie Templeman (Saturday) and Kelis (Sunday), alongside more exciting additions including Crawlers, Bleach Lab, Baby Queen, The Clockworks and Elvana.. Comedy returns to Hillsborough with a huge Line-Up including headliners Jason Manford, Russell Kane and Seann Walsh.

This latest wave of new acts will join headliners Sam Fender, Kasabian and Madness with over five stages of music, a family friendly area and a genre-spanning Line-Up of performers including everyone from internationally acclaimed acts to grass roots talent.

2022 will mark the 13th edition of Sheffield’s Biggest Party.

Alongside this latest Line-Up announcement, Tramlines also reveals that Weekend tickets have sold out with 95% of the festival's tickets now sold, with only an extremely limited number of Day tickets available. Day tickets for Tramlines are priced from £50 plus booking fees and can be

Tramlines 2022 takes place following an exceptional event in 2021 where the festival took place as part of the Government’s Event Research Programme. Kelis is back in 2022 for the first time since joining us on the Ponderosa back in 2017. The multiaward winning artist is bound to be dropping classics such as ‘Trick Me’ and ‘Millionaire’. British rapper Lady Leshurr also makes a return to the festival, bringing her expert lyricism and freestyles, best known for her ‘Queen’s Speech’ series.

Alfie Templeman finally gets his opportunity to grace Hillsborough park after having to cancel his appearance last year due to isolating. The ‘Happiness in Liquid Form’ singer, who said he was “gutted” in missing out on his slot last year, will appear on Saturday alongside newly announced Liverpool rock-group Crawlers and London alt-rockers Bleach Lab. Joining Friday's line-up is Baby Queen, who brings her hazy

alt-pop hits to Sheffield’s biggest party. While Galway four-piece The Clockworks join the bill to add a post-punk twist to what will be the start of another memorable weekend. Also joining the Line-Up for 2022 is Bradford bassline collective Bad Boy Chiller Crew, bringing with them even more genre-spanning sounds to Tramlines Line-Up. Sunday will see a performance from Elvana, an Elvis fronted Nirvana tribute band. Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, The Snuts (Friday) can no longer join us at Tramlines 2022.

Comedy has become a mainstay of the festival and in 2022 Tramlines has secured some huge names kicking off with Seann Walsh who headlines on Friday.

Seann is a multi-award winning performer with a growing list of TV credits including QI, Strictly Come Dancing, Celebrity Juice and 8 out of 10 cats. Sean is joined on Friday by Scott Bennett, Michelle Shaughnessy, Alisdair Beckett-King, Vince Atta and host Danny McLoughlin.

Saturday headliner Russell Kane is a UK household name due to numerous TV appearances as a guest and as a presenter of his own shows including 2016 travel doc Stupid Man - Smart Phone.

Joining Russell on Saturday are

Tom Ward, Karen Bayley, Harry Stachini, Jack Gleadow and host Matt Read.

The Sunday showcase is headlined by Jason Manford, well known due his tenure as team leader on 8 out of 10 cats, his numerous presenting roles and his appearances in West End musicals such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,

The Producers and Sweeney Todd. Also appearing on Sunday are Ivan Brackenberry, Lily Philips and host Emmanuel Sonubi who has been hotly tipped by both Jason Manford and Russell Kane.

The Consumer Council for Water (CCW) says only 1 in 4 customers are aware water companies have schemes that can reduce the water bills of low-income customers. This is at a time when many households are being impacted by the cost of living crisis - compounded by yesterday’s confirmation of another sharp rise in energy bills.

With Water UK today announcing that the average household water and sewerage bill in England and Wales will rise by £7 to £419 from 1 April, CCW is urging customers to soak up its money-saving advice and seek support from their water company if they are worried about their bill Top three ways to save water bills • Trial a water meter – typical saving £200. If you’re among the 40 per cent of households who still not do not have a meter, it’s worth checking if you might be better off with one. Not everyone will save with a meter but most water companies will give you two years to trial one and switch back if you’re unhappy.

• Get smart at the art of saving water and energy – savings vary. Much of the water we use in the home comes from the hot tap. That means if you have a water meter you can double up on water and energy savings too. If every person in a family of four halved their daily shower time from 10 minutes to 5 minutes they could save almost £600 a year (water and energy combined).

• Reduce your bills with a low-income social tariff – typical saving £148. All water companies offer reduced tariffs to low-income customers. Eligibility and the level of support varies from company to company but, in some cases, bills can be cut by as much as 90 per cent.

A national campaign to highlight the dangers of using a mobile phone at the wheel will launch in South Yorkshire next week.

Using a handheld mobile phone while driving makes you four times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a road traffic collision– with 17-24-year-old men most at risk. From Monday, (7 February), South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) will support the campaign using digital billboards and a new Instagram video urging all drivers; ‘In the car – put your phone away’.

Joanne Wehrle, manager of SYSRP, said: “It’s absolutely vital that we continue to emphasise the dangers of being distracted by a mobile phone while in the car. We will be asking drivers to think about whether a text or call is really worth the points, their licence, job or even their life? Our message is simple – in the car, put your phone away. Use the glove box, put it on silent or out of reach and remember it is still illegal to use your mobile while stopped at traffic lights or in queueing traffic.”

The current law states that it’s illegal to use a handheld mobile when driving including using a handheld phone to follow a map, read a text or check social media. If you’re caught, you’ll get six penalty points on your licence and a fine of £200. If you get six points in the first two years after passing your test, you will automatically lose your licence.

Using a hands-free device (for example, for navigation) is not illegal. However, if this distracts you and affects your ability to drive safely, you can still be prosecuted by the police.

You can only use a handheld phone if you are safely parked or need to call 999 or 112 in an emergency and it’s unsafe or impractical to stop.

“Any type of distraction can be deadly,” added Joanne. “Research shows that drivers using a hands-free or a handheld mobile phone are slower at recognising and reacting to hazards.

Your reaction times are two times slower if you text and drive than if you drink drive. Even careful drivers can be distracted by a call or text – and a split-second lapse in concentration could result in a crash.”

The campaign will run for three weeks and South Yorkshire Police’s road traffic team will be carrying out enforcement activity as part of daily business. Roads Policing Acting Inspector Brandon Brown said: “Using your mobile phone behind the wheel is dangerous and costs lives, people die, it is a fact. While we still see people put their phones to their ear to take a call, we are increasingly seeing younger drivers scroll through social media, text, use apps and take photographs and videos. People are addicted to their mobile phones. If you find it hard to put it down while driving, store it out of sight and reach.”

The aim of the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) is to reduce the number of people injured in road traffic collisions and make South Yorkshire roads safer.

council issues budget statement

The following is a statement from Sheffield City Council following its budget review.

Over the last two years, Sheffield, as well as the rest of the world, has been placed under great strain as a result of the pandemic.

Sheffield has seen greater demands on health and social care services as well as an unprecedented increase in public spending. The Covid pandemic also significantly reduced income coming into the Council, such as Council Tax, Business Rates and car parking. Although levels are recovering, overall they remain below the levels we were forecasting for 2022/23 before the pandemic. As a Council we have remained dedicated to providing all the best services for residents despite the constraints of the pandemic. But, returning services to as close to pre-pandemic levels has proved extremely challenging. Following a public consultation, we have set out Sheffield’s 2022/23 budget.The Council initially estimated it could face a total of £82million in additional costs for 2022/23.

What have we done to tackle the budget?

The Council has identified £53m of additional income, reduced costs and identified ways to control spending. In addition, we have introduced cost controls and a voluntary redundancy scheme which aims to reduce the Council’s workforce by more than 160 people.

What do we plan to do going forward?

The Council is now forced to fill the £14.5million budget gap with financial reserves. This is only the second time since 2010 that reserves have been used to balance the budget. Using one-off reserves to balance the budget is only a short-term solution and going forward the council will be continuing to address the underlying imbalance and trying to reduce the gap. The budget plans also include an increase in Council Tax to help close the gap and continue to deliver much-needed Council services.

This year’s Government Spending Review allows councils to increase Council Tax by up to 1.99% with an additional 1% precept to help cover adult social care costs. This will see a total increase of 2.99% applied, raising an extra £7million. The Council will be adding an extra £200,000 to the Hardship Fund to continue supporting financially disadvantaged residents affected by this. The Spending Review also highlighted there will be no specific additional funding given to Sheffield to tackle the ongoing impact of Covid in the city.

Instead, local authorities, including Sheffield City Council, can expect a share of £1.6billion general extra funding for councils for 2022/23. We

anticipate that Sheffield City Council will receive £19million, which is not enough to close the budget gap and does not compensate Sheffield, and other local authorities, sufficiently for ten years of reducing ‘austerity’ funding between 2010 and 2020, spiralling costs or to mitigate the longer-term impacts of Covid-19. While the Council tries to find areas it can create savings, we also continue to lobby Central Government for more financial support for Local Authorities. The pandemic has placed an enormous strain on Sheffield’s budget, but a decade of sustained funding cuts has also resulted in a £211m (29%) reduction in core spending power in Sheffield – working out as a £828 reduction per dwelling.

Cllr Cate McDonald said: “While we face a truly challenging budget, we as a Council are continuing to maintain critical services – looking after the elderly, safeguarding vulnerable children, maintaining the city’s streets and providing services such as waste collection, parks and environmental health that we all rely on. We are committed to putting residents at the heart of services and learning lessons from the challenges we have all faced from the pandemic while also sticking to our pledge of becoming a Net Zero city by 2030. After a decade of budget cuts we have become all too familiar with having to find savings in order to maintain vital services for our residents”

LORD MAYOR SUPPORTS FREE COMEDY EVENT FOR NHS WORKERS Tickets for Good will bring some goodness back to their home city in Sheffield this March with a comedy event at world-renowned venue, The Leadmill on Sunday 6th March.

This event is free for NHS workers, with only a small booking fee to pay (£3.50) to secure tickets.

The show was originally part of a Christmas NHSexclusive comedy series from Tickets for Good, the show is now the northern partner of an NHSexclusive show at London comedy club, 21Soho.

current Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Gail Smith, Tickets for Good have also pledged an allocation of tickets, with completely no fees attached, to the Lord Mayor’s chosen charities. This includes The Salvation Army, the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Friends of Hi5s. The Friends of Hi5s are a not for profit charity set up in 2013.

They support disabled young people with social activities designed to build confidence with an emphasis on trying new things and having fun.

The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Gail Smith said; ‘In my role as Lord Mayor, I’m

meeting some amazing people who have done amazing things before and during the pandemic. It’s so nice to be able to say thankyou to some of these people who have worked so hard during this time.’

The Leadmill event will feature comedians Rob Rouse, Hayley Ellis, Pete Selwood and is hosted by Jonathan Mayor.

Rob Rouse has ‘comedy guaranteed to lighten even the darkest of moods … always a step ahead of your expectations’ (Edinburgh Evening News).

He is a familiar face on TV with shows like 8 out of 10 Cats, Spoons, The Friday Night Project, Celebrity Juice and many more under his belt.

Hayley Ellis has worked on Russell Howard’s Good News TV show, and has also appeared in Why Aye Love Geordie Shore and Newsjack on BBC Radio 4. She’s described as, ‘Brilliantly funny and a joy to watch’, by Sarah Milican.

Pete Selwood has taken the circuit by storm and recently had his TV debut on ITV’s Emily Atack Show. His adaptability has seen him form a double act with Jack Carrolll for a show called Impairment which has been performed across a sold out UK show. Host Jonathan Mayor is the official tour support for Sarah Milican who describes him as ‘Marvellously wicked!’,

he’s one of the most indemand comperes on the circuit.

Tickets for Good is a ticketing company with a social purpose. With the belief that event attendance is hugely beneficial for social and individual wellbeing, Tickets for Good support the distribution of live event tickets to those who stand to benefit most.

advanced into the box, with Ndiaye, Norwood and Fleck all involved, BOGLE kept his composure to slip the ball between the legs of Etheridge to cap a wonderful team goal.

United’s game management was excellent as the clock ticked down in their favour, managing the threats of the home side well comfortably whilst also carrying a threat going forward with Egan heading over a Fleck corner, but five minutes of added time passed without concern as United made it three wins on the spin.

United’s Under 18s continued their impressive unbeaten run this season with a 2-1 win in the Sheffield derby against Sheffield Wednesday thanks to goals from Sydie Peck and Fernando Macedo’s first Blades goal 10 minutes from time.

ON MAKING THE GAME I showed a negative test yesterday and another one today so I phoned the doctor and got here about an hour and a bit before the game. I wanted to be with the boys for the game and I was pleased to be able to get here today. I feel absolutely fine and I feel even better after the win.

ON THE WIN We deserved the win in what were difficult weather conditions on a difficult pitch. That’s probably the worst I have seen it since I was here as a player. But we got on with it and I thought we produced a really professional performance. The wind was driving and it was hard to play our game but you have to

be adaptable and we showed that side today.

ON CLEAN SHEETS The base is at the back and that allows the players at the front to score the goals to win the games. We have got this side of our game in a good place. It’s always pleasing to win and to win with a clean sheet and even more so away from home.

The performances have been there, like the last game away at Oxford, the performance was there, it was just the lapses in concentration that cost us. We’ve sharpened up on that side and the results are there to see.

ON INJURIES We don’t seem to have any problems today but as always we will give it 24 hours and assess things then. In terms of the players already out injured, I’m not expecting much change before the Wigan game. We are waiting for the full assessments and I’ve been away from the training ground these last few days and today I’ve come down here after returning a negative test. So I will be looking at everything in-depth over the next day or two, assessing exactly where we are and who we have available and who we don’t.

Redfearn frustrated with Blades draw United Women head coach Neil Redfearn described his side’s 2-2 draw at Sunderland on Sunday as a ‘little frustrating’, after the Blades enjoyed large spells of control but had to come from behind twice in Hetton.

A brace from Courtney Sweetman-Kirk sealed a point and extended the team’s unbeaten run in the FA Women’s Championship to four games, but after a missed penalty, a shot against the crossbar and another off the line, it could and should have been more.

United fell behind despite a positive start when a quick break saw Abbey Joice slide the hosts in front, but two minutes later there was controversy when Sweetman-Kirk turned home what looked like the equaliser, only for the referee to pull play back for handball inside the box and award the Blades a penalty, which was subsequently put just wide by the United forward.

“We were the better side, so it’s a little frustrating,” admitted Redfearn. “It’s a strange decision to give the penalty when we’ve just put the ball in the net.

“We had to come from behind twice and showed character to do that, but we had the better chances and played the better football. Away from home, if you get a point you’d want to be satisfied, but on the balance of play we deserved to win.”

Sweetman-Kirk did equalise ten minutes later after good play from Alethea Paul and then Georgia Walters, and as it looked like United were getting on top of the game, they fell behind again in the second half just moments after Sweetman-Kirk had been denied by Cowling in the Sunderland goal, then the crossbar, and then from the subsequent corner both Jess Clarke and Georgia Robert saw efforts blocked on the line.

“The defending was poor and that’s something we’ll have to look at, the first goal in particular. We’ve got to do better there, but the weight of play we had and the chances we created, that’s where the frustration lies.

“It’s not an easy place to come. The pitch was difficult and credit to Mel because she sets them up well. They did well today as they had a lot of players out but from our point of view it was a missed opportunity.”

Redfearn added, “When we did go after them, we opened them up and at 1-1 you thought we’d go on and win it. We created the chances to do it but you’ve got to put them away.”

There were other positives for Redfearn to take away from the game too, as Rhema Lord-Mears made her first start since September and 18-year-old Charley Docherty made her first senior start at right-back.

The young defender played 90 minutes when LordMears continued her recovery from a blood clot with an hour after gaining 30 minutes at Bramall Lane last week.

“Rhema needs game time. She had half a game in a friendly mid-week and she did well, it’s another positive for her.

“Charley did well, used the ball well and defended well. She made the odd mistake but she’s going to, so we’re pleased with her and both of them.”

United return swiftly to action on Sunday at home to Blackburn Rovers and despite the frustration of not coming home with three points, Redfearn is pleased with his side’s progress so far since the winter break.

“We’re unbeaten in our last three away games against three tough sides and unbeaten in four league games this year, but if we’d played today like we trained through the week I think we’d have taken the three points.”

Reo Griffiths spoke to the media following the 2-1 win at Sunderland in Sky Bet League One. The 21-year-old netted the opener on his full Rovers debut at the Stadium of Light, to set his side on their way to a crucial three points.

On his goal: “The ball was bouncing in front of me so I had to wait for the right moment to shoot, fortunately I picked the right time and it went in.

“It was a good finish on my weaker side. I practice it a lot in training and I was so happy to see it go in.

“We felt their fans turn a little bit after the goal and the atmosphere wasn’t as strong, which helped us to push on.”

On a solid team performance: “It was a massive performance from the boys, we dug deep and I thought defensively we were brilliant.

“We stuck to what the manager wanted from us and earned a big three points.

“It was a disappointing result in midweek and we had to bounce back, we did that and came away with a very good win.”
