New community plans to give locals more influence Academy Upholstery Next month, Sheffield’s Local Area Committees (LACs) will present their new community plans to the residents in their local areas. The community plans will reflect what residents have told us matter to them, the priority local issues they have identified working with the LACs over the last 10 months and the actions needed to deal with the issues. Seven LACs were launched across Sheffield in May 2021, to provide a platform for people to influence important local decisions that affect them and their
communities. Each committee has a £100,000 budget to tackle local issues, with an additional dedicated budget to address flytipping and graffiti. Since their launch, LACs have been reaching out to communities to hear what residents have to say about where they live, and what they would like to see improved or changed. This feedback has shaped community plans for each LAC, focusing on local priorities such as the environment, crime and community safety, transport and highways,
and employment. The community plans will be presented for approval by the committees at public meetings in March. People will have the opportunity to ask about the plans and discuss how the LACs will deliver the priorities. The meetings will also offer an opportunity for Sheffield residents to work together with their LAC and its partners to deliver the plan.
Cllr Terry Fox, leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “People’s needs are different in each part of Sheffield, and the
community plans reflect that. They’re a direct result of hearing thousands of voices and I’m really excited to see what will be achieved when the plans are put into action. “LACs are going to keep listening and working with residents across Sheffield to help make the improvements that matter to their communities. “Whilst this means more money being spent locally, more long term it is about shaping how key council services in local areas run - such as youth provision and community enforcement.”
Rd N, Sheffield, S2 1SN Local Area Committees are part of Sheffield City Council’s Empowering Communities Programme, which aims to engage, empower and enable local communities through increased participation in, and ownership of, local decision making. More details on LACs, which areas are covered and the dates of next meetings can be found at www.sheffield.gov.uk/ home/your-city-council/ local-area-committees

It’s a manifesto for the way we can move forward, a roadmap to a better tomorrow, an ABC
for the way to be. Devised, written, choreographed, performed and funded by Alan Partridge, Stratagem sees Alan not just treading the boards but pounding them, atop stages graced by such luminaries as Michael Ball, Jack Whitehall and Welsh rockers the Stereophonics. call for families “heart to heart”
With more than 300 people, including more than 40 children*, waiting for a heart transplant this Valentine’s Day, NHS Blood and Transplant is calling on families to have a heart-to-heart about organ donation. While heart transplants have continued throughout the pandemic, with only 7% less in 2020/21 compared to the year before**, the waiting list for a heart transplant has risen 85% in the last decade, from 169 patients in March 2012 to 313 in March 2021***. It is more important than ever that families share their decisions around organ donation to save more lives. Ryan Gabb, 30, fhas been waiting on the heart transplant waiting list since May 2018. Ryan’s life was turned upside down in September 2017 when he suddenly became very unwell. Ryan explains: “I had been feeling unwell for a few weeks, just general tiredness and flu type symptoms that I couldn’t shake off. It was gradually getting worse and I was starting to become breathless too. Knowing something wasn’t right, I borrowed a friend’s Fitbit to check my heart rate and it was over 100, I knew I needed to get checked out, so I left work early and went to the doctors. The GP sent me straight to the local hospital where I was told I had Dilated Cardiomyopathy and I would likely need a heart transplant. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing and was in complete shock, I knew I hadn’t been well but was not expecting anything so serious. I hope the year ahead can bring some normality and I also hope more people will discuss organ donation with their families and register their decision. You never know when or who might need that help. I used to be a regular blood donor and I also joined the NHS Organ Donor Register when I was 18. I thought both were important, but I never expected that my life would change so much.” Even though the law around organ donation has now moved to an opt out system across England, Wales, and Scotland, many people are still not aware that families will still always be consulted before organ donation goes ahead. While families are more likely, and find it easier, to support donation when they know it is what their loved one wanted, only 43% of the UK population have registered their decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register and just 38% say that they have shared their organ donation decision with their family. Jack Baker, 27, was an ICU nurse at Southmead Hospital who suffered a bleed on the brain while cycling home from a day shift in August 2020. Jack, from Bristol, was taken back to Southmead where he was cared for by friends and colleagues. After he

Jack’s mum, Helen, says: “Jack was a passionate advocate for organ donation and had always carried an “I Donate” keyring. He had ambitions to join the organ donation team within the hospital and had been encouraged by fellow nurses to apply as we all knew he would have been fantastic at the job. We were never in any doubt about Jack being a donor as it was a decision he had already made and we had had the donation conversation as a family. The fact that Jack was an organ donor has helped us in our grief, the thought that there is something of Jack still in the world is a great comfort to us. Donation is such a positive thing to come out of a very tragic situation we feel. We have heard from two of Jack’s recipients and to know his recipients are doing well and their lives have been improved means everything to us. Jack will be loved and missed forever.” Anthony Clarkson of NHS Blood and Transplant, says: “Thousands of people across the UK are waiting for the call that a donor has been found to save or transform their life, and hundreds of them need a heart transplant. We encourage everyone to have that heart-to-heart now. Talk to your family and tell them your organ donation decision, leave them certain of it. And make sure you know what they would want too, so you can support their decision. This Valentine’s Day have a heart-toheart and share your organ donation decision to help save more lives.”

growing confidence across CIU clubland As he embarks on his second two-year term as Union President, George Smith believes that there are many encouraging signs of recovery for clubs, as well as a number of major challenges to overcome in the coming months. Mr Smith, who also serves as the Branch Secretary for Durham, paid tribute to the club officials who are at the heart of clubland’s resurgence in the postpandemic environment. “From visiting and talking to clubs in my Branch, as well as hearing about clubs from other parts of the country from their NEC representatives,
it’s clear that clubs are working harder than ever to get people through their doors,” he said. “During the pandemic, many members got out of the habit of regularly attending their club so club committees up and down the land are now having to pull out all of the stops to entice people back in,” he said. “And it certainly seems to be paying off. For example, live entertainment is one of the traditional strengths of CIU clubs and that continues to be a big draw for members as it’s an experience you can’t replicate at home. “People have also missed out on being able to
take part in traditional club games and sports during the pandemic so it’s very pleasing that the CIU’s various national competitions are once again resuming, as well as the local leagues and competitions in snooker, pool, darts, dominoes, skittles and other games. “Bingo sessions, prize draws and raffles are also giving people a reason to return to their club on a regular basis and give a boost to trade across our bars.” In terms of challenges facing clubs, Mr Smith expressed concern about the well-publicised rise in energy costs which will likely significantly add to
clubs’ outgoings if current projections are proved correct. “Rising energy costs are a big worry for many club secretaries, just as they are for the majority of households, and as a Union we will be lobbying the Government, through our membership of CORCA and the APPG for NonProfit Making Members’ Clubs at Westminster, for help and support for our clubs in this regard,” he said. “It has also come to my attention that many clubs are struggling to form full committees because of a lack of people standing for positions. I make a plea to club members
whose club may be in this position: Get involved! Your club needs you to help it run and being on the Committee is both a rewarding experience and the best way to support your club.” In his role as President, Mr Smith will be chairing the Union’s Annual Meeting in Blackpool on Saturday, April 9, the first full AGM to be held since 2019 following the cancellation of the Conference in 2020 due to the pandemic. In 2021, a truncated, finance-focused meeting took place in September 2021, five months later than originally scheduled. “With Conference Weekend back in its
normal place this year, in the second week of April, we anticipate that the majority of our clubs will be sending representatives to debate our Constitution for the first time in three years,” said Mr Smith. “We also have the Beer & Trades Exhibition, on Friday, April 8, ensuring that any club officials who attend Blackpool 2022 will find it a very worthwhile, not to mention enjoyable, weekend which will demonstrate the combined strength and confidence of the CIU movement.”
Advance ticket sales matter now more than ever! After a turbulent two years, the Leadmill is embarking on a campaign to drive people interested in purchasing tickets for future events to do so before April 1st 2022, in order for venues to take advantage of the VAT cuts that have been made on music venue ticket sales up until the very last moment. With a huge range of events to choose from, there will be something for everybody! The venue posted online
this week with the following statement: "Advance ticket sales matter now more than ever! As some of you may know, business VAT rates on music venue ticket sales return to 20% on April 1st, so there’s no better time than now to secure a ticket for that show you’ve been holding out on. Not only can we promise you a night to remember, but your purchase would be helping us out so much after a turbulent couple of years. Every ticket sale made now benefits the industry more than if you waited. Head to our website below for our full listings and treat yourself to the gift of unforgettable live music this Winter. http:// leadmill.co.uk/events"

Levelling up: Sheffield one of the first cities to be benefit from ambitious renewal programme Sheffield has been named as one of the first cities to benefit from government’s Levelling Up programme set out in a new White Paper published last week. Sheffield is one of the first of 20 places to benefit from the government funding that aims to transform cities and economies, create new homes, jobs, improve health, education and leisure facilities as well as roads and railways. The plan aims to provide a streamlined strategy for government departments to work across, that ensures a well-coordinated approach with local city leaders, helping to bring about significant change, quickly. It builds upon work already in motion between city representatives and Homes England to form a collective approach to housing growth. Government representatives are expected to visit Sheffield later this month to begin work with the city on initial plans for how to approach the regeneration at scale and at pace. This is set be the first in a series of meetings to support the city in delivering its ambitions for physical, economic and social regeneration. Leader of the Council, Councillor Terry Fox, said “This is promising news for Sheffield and the South Yorkshire region, and shows that government have recognised our ambitions and all of the great work that is already being carried out here to make our city an even better place to call home. “The disjointed, haphazard and disproportionate approach to funding and support for cities outside of London needs to be addressed swiftly to tackle the growing inequalities and speed up regional productivity. I welcome the governments objectives outlined in the white paper to-

day, but we really need to see more detail now and find out where the cash is. "Levelling up is a long-term commitment that we in Sheffield are determined to drive forward regardless of today’s announcement but we look forward to working with Government over the coming weeks to see how the agenda can bring about true and lasting change in our city and for our people.” Mazher Iqbal, Executive Member for City Futures: Development, Culture and Regeneration said “Today’s announcement is a long awaited step for Sheffield, that if it works, has the potential to help us achieve our bold and ambitious plans for the city. “In Sheffield there is already some brilliant, innovative work taking place and last year we received £37m towards Castlegate and Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park. We will build upon developments that are already underway such as Heart of the City, Central Area Strategy, Castlegate, Sheaf Valley & Park Hill, Attercliffe, Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, Advanced Manufacturing innovation District, Kelham Island & Neepsend, Gleadless Valley and Stocksbridge, to ensure Sheffield is at the forefront of regeneration and a city that serves its people for years to come. “More detailed discussions need to take place over the next weeks to iron out what the 12 priorities of the Levelling Up White Paper mean for Sheffield and our vision. We hope that this is the first step in government departments pooling resources, listening to and support our ambitions, coordinating investment and helping us to deliver real regeneration and the economic prosperity that we deserve in Sheffield.”

ALL SQUARE BETWEEN TERRIERS & BLADES Darren Moore: It was honours even at a soggy John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday lunchtime. A draw was probably a fair result between two evenly matched sides, with Jon Russell having a goal chalked off in the first half and United hitting the post and seeing two attempts cleared off the line in the second period. United made four changes for the clash in West Yorkshire. Fleck, Berge, McBurnie and Gibbs-White all started, as Norwood, Hourihane and Ndiaye dropped to the bench, with McGoldrick absent through injury. Huddersfield enjoyed more territory and possession in the opening 15 minutes without creating a chance of note, as Berge was booked for pulling by O’Brien. United though enjoyed a couple of headed opportunities, as McBurnie was firstly denied by Nicholls from Bogle’s early cross from
the right before the Scottish international glanced an effort wide from Fleck’s delivery from the left. The game was entertaining but tight, with both teams enjoy brief spells on the front foot, but on 39 minutes the visitors had a major let off. Russell climbed above Bogle from Koroma’s deep corner but as he wheeled away celebrating the officials disallowed the goal after a tangle between Ward and Foderingham, after the striker had initially gone down following a tussle with Baldock. And right on half time, following another Koroma corner the ball fell kindly for Ruffles, but Foderingham was smartly out to smother the opportunity at the back post to ensure it remain goalless heading into the interval.Following a tight opening 45 minutes the second half promised to be much more open as Sharp fired into the side
netting and then tried to tee up McBurnie, but his effort on the run was tame. McBurnie who had been in the thick of the action all afternoon saw a looping header gathered by Nicholls after Fleck had won the ball back high up the pitch. The home stopper was certainly this busier of the two goalkeepers, this time getting down smartly after Berge took aim from distance. In response, Koroma was denied by Foderingham
Chris Basham feels last Saturday’s point at Huddersfield Town could prove to be a good one in the final reckoning, despite feeling it was United who came closet to snatching the spoils in West Yorkshire. Basham acknowledged
the challenge Huddersfield posed in testing conditions at the John Smith’s Stadium and believes not losing ensures the Blades enter a sequence of three consecutive home matches will further belief and momentum. Meanwhile, the
experienced defender was complimentary about the performances of goalkeeper Wes Foderingham who has taken his opportunity with both hands since the injury and subsequent departure of Robin Olsen. With boss Paul
having initially failed to capitilise on a some space on the back post from Pipa’s deep cross. Robinson was then cautioned for dissent but avoided firing through his own net as Foderingham snuffed out the danger from a Holmes cross from the left. Norwood replaced Gibbs-White prompting Berge to move into a more advanced role, as McBurnie was then carded having caught Pearson with his arm.
United finished on the front foot though in a bid to claim the spoils, as both McBurnie and Pipa had weak claims for a penalty waved away by referee Linnington. On 84 minutes, United came close twice in less than 30 seconds as Fleck was denied by Nicholls and the woodwork, before McBurnie and Berge had efforts cleared off the line from a corner as three minutes of added time elapsed without the deadlock being broken.
Moving in right direction
ONLY A SHORT WALK FROM SWFC
Heckingbottom already feeling it right to ultilise his squad in recent matches, Basham hopes United’s strength in depth, despite a couple of untimely injuries can aid their chase of playoff spot with Hull City the next challenge on Tuesday evening.
Post-Rotherham
The Owls were edged out 2-0 to local rivals Rotherham despite dominating the derby clash at Hillsborough. Here’s the thoughts of the Wednesday gaffer speaking in his postmatch press conference.
ON THE GAME I’m really pleased with the performance but not the result, obviously. We’ve played the top of the league today and dominated most of the game. They had two shots and scored two goals and in many ways that’s where they are where they are. I will speak to Paul later and congratulate him and wish his side all the best for the rest of the season. For us, we dust ourselves down and move on to Accrington on Wednesday night. It will be a different game but one we will be going into with confidence because that performance was right up there. We showed desire, we showed strength and for me we played some of our best football but couldn’t make our dominance count. ON TICKING BOXES If I had that one critique
today it would be that ruthlessness in front of goal. We’ve had one on ones, we’ve had chances, we had a shout for a penalty, we’ve done everything but score. In terms of ticking boxes we’ve ticked nine out of ten today against a team sitting comfortably on top of the table. The one thing missing was getting our noses in front because if we had managed that I think we’d have gone on to win the game. Rotherham don’t concede a lot of goals and they showed why…they are dogged, determined, well organised, but we still broke them down but couldn’t find that finishing touch. We have strong foundations though and we can look forward with belief in what we are trying to achieve. EYE OF THE TIGER If we’d had that eye of the tiger today we win the game. I wanted to see where we are as a group having played the top two back-to-back and I firmly believe we are in a good place. We are in good shape to negotiate the rest of the season. We’ll have some
players back and we will be in a good position to move forward. I’m not disheartened today by that level of performance because we will play worse than that and lose. I’ve just said to the players that they shouldn’t get down over the game, yes we lost, we’ve dominated almost from start to finish but they have scored from the only two shots on target they had. ON THE NEXT GAME That’s where my focus is, win, lose or draw, it’s all about the next game. We’ll get this one out of our system very quickly and the good thing is we have a chance to get back out there on Wednesday night. I watched Accrington yesterday, they are a team with a lot of positives, they scored four goals and they will come here with confidence. But our form is good, we know we should have won the game today but like I say I am not disheartened because some of our play was exceptional and if anything parts of the performance were better than the performance when we beat Wigan.

Palmer closing in on OWLS all-time top 20 appearance makers Liam Palmer is well on course to force his way into a proud list of players in the club’s illustrious history. The boyhood Wednesdayite and Owls academy product is edging closer to a place in the Owls all-time top 20 appearance makers since the club’s formation in 1867. Sitting at the top of that pile and unlikely to ever be dislodged is iconic centre forward Andrew Wilson. Not only does Wilson boast the most appearances for Wednesday (546) but he also holds the record for most goals scored (216). But as the games go by and with Palmer a regular for the club, the defender is on track to break into the top 20 in the not too distant future. Currently, the 30-year-old has played 334 games since making his debut all the way back in August 2010. With only a season-break from his boyhood club – a loan spell with Tranmere in 2012/13, Palmer continues to rack up the games. “When you’re playing you don’t really chalk off the numbers - it’s only when you get to those types of milestones that you really think,” he told the media in a recent press conference this season. “To still be here doing what I’m doing, it really does make me proud.” Palmer continued: “I think my versatility has allowed me to play as many as I have - before this season and during this season. “I see that as a real positive, and like the manager says, it’s another string to my bow and shows that I can adapt and be trusted in different positions. “I always have, and always will, play wherever I’m needed - wherever the manager needs me. “My mantra has always been about doing my best, some people get upset when they’re out of position, but I don’t see it as a detriment to yourself. I think it’s a positive, because it means the manager trusts you enough to not only play your preferred position, but also in other positions.” Palmer is 25 games away from overtaking club legend Davis Hirst and signed a new contract with Wednesday back in November until summer 2023.

Paul Warne speaks following the South Yorkshire derby success over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough... “We weren’t at our best. Sheffield Wednesday are a really in-form side who are good at home. They had too much for us and we had to change it at half-time. I had to say a few home truths. The lads knew they didn’t perform well enough but I thought the game was similar to the New York game, but reversed. “We were the better side at home but lost two-nil and Sheffield Wednesday were the better side today and we win two-nil. Football is never fair. “We got a good goal off a set piece and there was some dogged defending. We rode our luck on numerous occasions and overall, I don’t think the best team won. “We kept a clean sheet and we found a way to win. The lads put their body on the line and it was a good three points.”
On the game: “I thought we were the better team first half, but you can’t miss those opportunities to go ahead like we did. “We got a bit sloppy in the last ten minutes, but I was disappointed that we weren’t leading at half-time. “Second half, we didn’t do the non-negotiables well enough. We didn’t work hard enough or get organised quickly enough. I don’t think they were peppering us but ultimately their attackers have produced the end product for them.” On players reaction: “They’re a bit down, but we want a response now. You can’t go into your shell and deflect at times like this. “They’ve got to go on the pitch and impact things. “Games are coming thick and fast so we have to dust ourselves down and prepare for Lincoln City on Tuesday.” On travelling support: “The fans travelled in their numbers and they really supported the lads. “I think in the first half, they probably saw a performance that was to the standard and worth the journey. But to concede four in the second half is embarrassing and the fans deserved better.”
