ROTHERHAM CELEBRATES BEING A CAPITAL OF CULTURE Academy Upholstery Rotherham officially launched its journey to become the world’s first Children’s Capital of Culture this week, with a neverseen-before 10-day festival of events aimed at children and young people. The Children’s Capital of Culture Launch Festival (21 February – 3 March) aims to give a taste of what 2025 could look like in Rotherham, spotlighting it as a cultural destination and home to a hive of creative talent. Rotherham town centre will be transformed into a playground for the young community during February half-term, with a skate and arts festival, demos by Team GB skaters and BMX pros, a giant spray-painting robot,

live music, large-scale art installations, and unmissable creative workshops and events. Julie Dalton, Managing Director of Gullivers and Chair of the Children’s Capital of Culture Programme Board, explains: “In 2025, Rotherham will be the world’s first Children’s Capital of Culture, designed and delivered by children and young people from across the borough. This is a bold, first-of-its kind initiative that aims to empower children and young people to create a future narrative for Rotherham on their own terms, celebrating its culture, identity and distinctive heritage. The journey officially starts here,

and we want everyone to get behind it.” The launch festival kickstarts a five-month pilot programme of activity for 0–25-year-olds in Rotherham. From now until June 2022, children and young people can attend events, join creative networks and take part in skills training programmes as part of the Children’s Capital of Culture programme, which has received £1.4m from the UK Government through the UK Community Renewal Fund. Cllr Dave Sheppard, Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, adds: “We will be using this time to give young people in Rotherham more lifechanging training and skills

opportunities in the creative and cultural sectors than they’ve ever had before, that will make a lasting impact on them and on our town. We want to make Rotherham a place that young people are proud to call home, and where they want to develop, work and invest. We’re making improvements that will help change the perception of Rotherham, inside and outside the town, and lead a wave of aspiration amongst our young people.” The Children’s Capital of Culture project is led by Rotherham Council, delivered in partnership with children and young people, businesses, voluntary and community sector organisations and cultural

SNODGRASS My right arm hurts like crazy, but only between 9 am & 11 am. Worst case of ten-ish elbow ever. 1 week before Grandad died we bought him a snowboard... He went downhill very quickly after that. I wrote a song about a tortilla. Actually it’s more of a wrap. The other day I saw a bucket at the hardware store with a sign that said: dead batteries - £1 each. I thought to myself: “These should be free of charge.” My friend went completely bald years ago, he still carries a comb with him. He just can’t part with it. I once bought a wooden car. Wooden engine, wooden doors, wooden wheels, wooden seats, put the wooden key in the wooden ignition. Wooden start.

council cuts use better rail support “legal right to local nature” of glysophosphate

Sheffield City Council has committed to reducing its use of glyphosate across all its service areas, including trialling glyphosate free areas in some parts of the city. The Council’s Cooperative Executive committed to reviewing and reducing the use of glyphosate in a controlled and targeted way across the city in September 2021. Currently used to eradicate weeds growing on the highway or in parks and green spaces, the council will introduce glyphosate free trial areas this year to evaluate the local impact of allowing weeds to grow. Glyphosate is a weedkiller used across agriculture and forestry, on lawns and gardens, and for weeds in industrial areas. It is applied to the leaves of plants to kill both broadleaf plants and grasses. Whilst glyphosate is currently approved for use in the UK until 2025, over the years, the council has invested a significant amount of time looking into alternative nonchemical weedkillers as well as completely chemical-free options. These include the use of sweepers which remove silt and debris, as well as mechanical ‘weed rippers’. Other alternative methods, such as not treating perimeters of parks and open spaces, adding wildflower meadows, and additional tree planting to further encourage habitat and biodiversity, have also been explored. Executive member for Housing, Road and Waste Management at Sheffield City Council, Councillor Paul Wood said: “We understand the concerns around the use of glyphosate and in recent years our services have been working together to share best practice with other authorities around the country to find ways to reduce its use. We regularly review the latest information available to find the most appropriate and responsible methods to treat weed growth across our green spaces and highways. By working with our partners and third-party contractors, we will ensure that we are following an ambitious programme of change whilst simultaneously reducing our use of glyphosate. This won’t happen overnight, but our priority will be to ensure a smooth and feasible plan is devised, allowing delivery partners to adjust and respond to new ways of operating.” Change is already happening and in recent years, the council’s parks and countryside teams, as well as the highways service, have relaxed mowing cycles to increase biodiversity, lessening the use of commercial weed killers. Around 20% of highway grass verges are now on a biodiversity mowing regime and this has already allowed for rare species to establish in verges, even in the most unexpected of places. Over 60? A new scheme in South Yorkshire plans to support older and disabled people to travel by rail independently thanks to Northern’s accessibility fund. Better Journeys by Rail aims to reduce social isolation and improve the wellbeing of people living in the region, by supporting them to access their local train services. This includes providing travel tips, up-to-date travel information and help to apply for concessionary travel passes and journey assist cards. Travel training sessions are also offered which include up to five sessions of one-to-one support to plan and make a train journey. The service is free to access for people over 50, those with disabilities and anyone in need of extra support with mobility and confidence recovery post-Covid. The scheme is part of Northern’s accessibility fund, which is dedicated to empowering communities to make decisions which will improve the railway for all. A total of 13 projects have been granted up to Ј50,000 each in funding and will focus on station improvements such as fitting handrails, ramps and automatic doors as well as schemes to encourage those with visible and invisible disabilities to use public transport. The fund is a first for the UK rail industry as the successful bids were chosen by the independent Northern Accessibility User Group (NAUG) and supported by Northern. Mark Powles Commercial and Customer Director, at Northern said: “Our customers are the heart of everything we do, and we are dedicated to making Northern’s services accessible to everyone, and to having a positive impact for the north. This scheme will give people in South Yorkshire added confidence when using our services. The accessibility fund is part of our wider project to transform our network and encourage people to use public transport – no matter their circumstances.” Lizzie Davies, Better Journeys By Rail Project Coordinator said: “We are really happy to have partnered with Northern on this important project, supporting people in the South Yorkshire region regain their confidence and rediscover their local train services. We know how difficult many people have found the past few years, and with this project we hope to support people to get out and about again, and to encourage the use of public transport to foster healthier and more sustainable communities. “

More than 60 nature, planning, health and equality organisations have launched a new ‘Nature For Everyone’ campaign, calling for a ‘legal right to nature’ to be a key component of the Government’s Levelling Up reforms. The calls follow the recent publication of the Levelling Up White Paper, by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Local Communities. The coalition behind the campaign have today launched a petition and written to Secretary of State Michael Gove calling for Government to: • make equal access to thriving natural spaces a key measure of success for Levelling Up • set legal duties in Levelling Up legislation for developers and public bodies to provide equal access to nature-rich green and blue spaces for everyone • provide funding for locally-accessible nature-rich spaces including extending the Levelling Up Fund to green and blue infrastructure projects. New research from Wildlife and Countryside Link on access to nature, has also been published today. This shows: a huge public demand for more and better natural spaces; the massive benefits this could have for our communities (particularly the most deprived and excluded); and the need for national and local leaders to deliver. There is strong evidence that accessible nature-rich spaces boost our physical and mental wellbeing, and reduce mortality. Yet one in three people in England cannot access nature near their home. This is a particular issue for the most disadvantaged communities, some of who have little or no greenspace. Ethnic minorities are also twice as likely to live in a neighbourhood without nature-rich spaces. At the same time, wildlife is declining across the UK, with the UK in the worst 10% of countries worldwide for nature loss. This lack of accessible natural space is a key inequality which must be addressed in levelling up living standards across the country. New research published today shows that two-thirds of British adults (66%) say more or better natural spaces would increase their quality of life. This is even higher among those in nature-deprived areas (i.e. those not within 5 minutes walk of natural space), with 85% saying it would raise their standard of living. Improving and creating natural spaces would give particularly big benefits to those on low incomes and ethnic minorities, who are most likely to live in nature deprived areas. With the poor-quality of many existing parks and other natural spaces a huge problem. The new findings reveal 81% of those living in naturedeprived areas would be more likely to visit local natural spaces if they were in better condition, and

Younger people and families are the most likely to say that they would exercise more if there were more and better accessible nature-rich spaces nearby, which is important given rising youth obesity rates. The physical and mental health benefits of increased access to nature would also benefit our health service, local economies and help towards achieving 2030 nature restoration targets. A ‘Nature for Everyone’ urban fund of £5.5 bn over 3 years would deliver £200 billion in NHS savings, create 40,000 jobs, and create access to nature-rich spaces for 3,500 deprived communities. Improving the quality of local natural spaces is also vital to help meet Government targets to protect 30% of land for nature by 2030 and halt the decline in species by 2030. Not only are the benefits of nature-rich neighbourhoods clear, there is also soaring demand for nature access across the country. Visits to urban parks and other greenspaces nearly doubled in the decade before the pandemic, from 1.2bn visits in 2009-10 to 2.1bn in 2018-19. Demand has only increased since the pandemic, with the public now placing an even greater premium on local nature. Our new findings show more than 8 in 10 British adults (83%) feel it is more important to have access to local natural spaces since the lockdowns and working from home.

Please send your Views, News and Reviews to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk / What’s On, 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG / Tel: 0114 276 3701 A desire to celebrate Sheffield has always been at the core of Tramlines and the newly launched, ‘Tramlines in the community’ covers all the varied work that Tramlines undertakes in the local community. As part of this, The Tramlines Trust will launch applications in Spring providing grants to local community organisations, charities and projects. More information about the trust and applications can be found via the website. Tramlines in the Community’s goal is to support and uplift communities at the heart of the festival. Each year Tramlines creates training and work opportunities, promotes Sheffield’s arts and local music scene, builds relationships with and supports local businesses whilst ensuring the festival is accessible to

all. You can find out more about their work in the community on their new web pages. Tramlines in the Community will help to open up multiple channels through which individuals and organisations can get involved. Tramlines is committed to raising awareness and supporting local charities. In 2021 the festival raised £34,500 for charity, which brings the total since moving to Hillsborough Park to a whopping £103,000. The donations were raised through a charity raffle, guest-list donations, ticket donation opt-ins, charity merch sales and ‘Nulty’s’ backstage bar - an area named after the late Festival Director, Sarah Nulty. In 2021, donations were made to The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation, ADIRA, The Sapphire Project, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Cathedral Archer

Project, S6 Food Bank and Hillsborough Primary School. The Tramlines Trust will open for funding applications later this Spring and will provide grants to successful applicants. The Trust will grow the festival’s annual fundraising and charitable donations whilst allowing opportunities for more charities & organisations to apply for funding. The Tramlines Trust is a micro trust of GivingWorks a UK registered charity (charity no:1078870). Full details on how applications can be made will be revealed soon on the official website and via social media channels. For more information check out the Tramlines Trust webpage. Timm Cleasby, Head of Operations for Tramlines said; ‘It’s incredibly important to us all at Tramlines that we support

‘TRAMLINES IN THE COMMUNITY’ LAUNCHES TRUST TO SUPPORT LOCAL ORGANISATIONS

the Sheffield community and local area. Our work with the trust will build on everything we already do in the community and help forge new links with projects and charities that we can support and amplify their work. If that wasn’t enough there’s plenty more news to follow as Tramlines in the Community expands including a partnership with Sheffield based Tickets for Good, another collaboration with Hillsborough Primary School, opportunities to perform at the festival via the Apply to Play scheme, work placements with local students, volunteering opportunities, Hillsborough Park improvements, plus many more exciting

projects in the pipeline! Tramlines is also very pleased to announce that they have achieved a coveted ‘Gold Status’ from Attitude is Everything for making the festival accessible to all. A spokesperson for Attitude is Everything said; ‘Tramlines signed up to the Attitude is Everything charter in 2019 to begin their journey making one of Sheffield’s largest live music events accessible to all. Despite the challenging circumstances of the pandemic including a 2020 cancellation, it has been fantastic to see the incredible development and hard work the team has done to fast track their status to Gold in 2021. Tramlines have truly made

Accessibility a priority, from implementing our recommendations and engaging with staff training around access to providing fantastic customer service onsite. We cannot wait to

see this amazing festival further improve their access provision and hopefully achieve Platinum status in 2022.’ I’m immensely proud of the team for their hard work

in achieving gold status with attitude is everything, making the festival as accessible as we can is something we all strive for and we’re aiming for platinum next.’

Tales of love, loss and faulty wiring. By Barnsley based writers Lee Pollard and Paul Athorne Join us for a never to be forgotten theatre experience. Where we meet Gary Devine, Barnsley’s number one spiritualist, who is preparing for his sell out show at Tykes View Working Men’s Club, or at least he would be if he could get the bloody hair dryer to work! A range of characters arrive to make contact with their loved ones. We hear stories of sadness, strength and humour. We travel to Graceland, Barcelona and Cudworth. To the Welsh valleys and Barnsley bingo halls and even a planet far, far away. Each person has a story tell that will guarantee both laughter and tears. “Ghost meets Phoenix Nights!” Pubman’s Guide “We never saw that coming” Psychic Monthly “How a live connection and a negative experience can bring you down to earth” Amateur Electrician PLEASE NOTE THIS PERFORMANCE CONTAINS STRONG LANGUAGE THROUGHOUT AND THEMES THAT SOME PEOPLE MAY FIND UPSETTING

BLADES EXTEND UNBEATEN RUN TO 8 Darren Moore: Post-Doncaster United’s unbeaten run in the Sky Bet Championship is extended to eight games as a four star showing is enough to see United climb into the play-off positions. Morgan Gibbs-White opened and finished the scoring as the Blades dominated from start to finish against Russell Martin’s Swansea City at Bramall Lane, with George Baldock and Billy Sharp also on target in the opening 45 minutes. Boss Heckingbottom made three changes for the hosting of the Swans, with Fleck, Berge and Sharp are recalled as McBurnie, Hourihane and Ndiaye dropped to the bench. United made a typically positive start and forced consecutive corners after a low cross from GibbsWhite evaded everyone. A third and fourth corner came to nothing, but on 14 minutes United deserved went in front. Norwood’s vision created

the opportunity for GIBBS-WHITE and the Wolves loanee never looked like missing having got the wrong side of Latibeaudiere. And three minutes later the advantage was doubled in spectacular fashion with BALDOCK volleying home into the top corner with Norrington Davies claiming the assist after Berge had fashioned space down the left. Either side of the half hour mark, United could and probably should have added a third goal, GibbsWhite headed wide after Norrington-Davies had robbed Ntcham inside his own half before Sharp crossed, then GibbsWhite advanced forward but tried to tee up his captain when perhaps he could have gone alone having got the better of Cabango. But on 38 minutes, some hesitation from Manning allowed Baldock to nick the ball and SHARP lifted the ball over Fisher after Gibbs-White had played

an inch perfect through to make the lead a match winning one. Before halftime Norwood and then Baldock were cautioned by referee Webb for halting the progress of Paterson on both occasions. Within three minutes of the restart United had the ball in the net again, but Baldock was flagged offside from Berge’s square pass across the six-yard box. Paterson’s effort was comfortably saved by Foderingham at

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s clash against Blackburn Rovers at Bramall Lane, boss Paul Heckingbottom revealed two key players will miss the remainder of the campaign. Jayden Bogle (knee) and

David McGoldrick (thigh) are both scheduled for surgery this week to cure their respective complaints and whilst acknowledging the obvious blow having already lost Rhian Brewster (hamstring), Heckingbottom says

going under the knife is in the best long-term interests of the duo. The boss had hoped he and the club’s medical team could manage Bogle’s cartilage issue until the end of the season, but conceded an operation was the only

the other end, likewise Fisher was equal to Fleck’s free kick. Another flowing counter-attack almost presented an opportunity for Sharp after Gibbs-White and Berge had fashioned the chance. Goode was handed his debut from the bench in worrying circumstances as Baldock limped off, but on 78 minutes United added a deserved fourth, this time it was Sharp with the assist as GIBBSWHITE side-footed home

from close-range after excellent hold up play from the skipper, as he departed to be replaced by McBurnie. Jebbison was introduced and received a warm hand from the 26,000 plus crowd inside the Lane, before the game ended with Norwood blazing over when it seemed easier to score after another misplaced pass from visiting stopper Fisher.

alternative following a recent scan. Ben Osborn rejoined the squad for training on Monday and completed part of the session, but no timescale has been placed on Enda Stevens’ return, with the Republic of Ireland

international continuing his rehabilitation alone.

ON THE GAME It was a dominant performance on the road and we deserved the win, we deserved the points. I saw Doncaster play Lincoln in midweek and they can be a very tough team to break down. Lincoln could still be playing now without scoring, such was the way Doncaster defended with that middle block. They got in front just before half time today and I felt we needed some changes at the break. We’ve down something this club hasn’t done in six years so I’m pleased on a lot of fronts.

ON THE CHARACTER OF THE TEAM I said to the players at half time, just keep doing what you are doing, the chances will come. Pato showed some real bravery to get us back in the game, he’s come out of it with a shiner but he’s put his head where it hurts. After that we get the chance to go in front with the penalty and it’s easy to let that kind of thing get you as a team when you miss a penalty but we have some a lot of character in that changing room and it showed today. ON MAKING CHANGES I felt we needed something different the way that Doncaster defended so deep and they had a boost by

getting the goal when they did. I put Pato and Saido up there and I’m delighted for both of them to get their goals. They looked sharp and lively when they came on and got what their performances deserved. I said to Flo and Sylla, we had to make the change to try something different and everyone in this squad has a part to play. It could quite easily be the other way round on Tuesday. ON THE TABLE Nothing is won or lost at this stage of the season but obviously our aim is to get into that top six and see where we can go from there. If we keep doing what we doing, picking up the points, we will keep climbing the table.

at Weston Park Cancer Charity, said: “The support of organisations like Sheffield Wednesday makes such a massive difference to us and the people we support. “We’d like to say a huge thank you to all the Wednesday fans who generously donated on the day, and to our incredible volunteers who braved freezing temperatures to help us support the one in two people facing cancer. “Everybody will be impacted by cancer in their lifetimes at some point – either directly or indirectly – so it is vital for us to continue to be there, together at every step, for the people

in our region who are affected. Support like this means we can do just that.” Marcus Brameld, Head of Community at SWFC, added: “The club is proud to have a longstanding relationship with Weston Park Cancer Charity and we are delighted with the support shown by Wednesdayites with their donations.” For more information on how you can support Weston Park Cancer Charity, visit www.westonpark. org.uk

McSheffrey: We It’s a point SUFC gained against ran out of steam 2021/22 a good team Warne

RIP Billy McEwan Sheffield United is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former manager, Billy McEwan. Billy joined the Blades in September 1984 as part of the coaching team, becoming acting manager after Ian Porterfield’s departure in March 1986, a role which became permanent in May of that year. He held the role until January 1988. When he took the manager’s seat at Bramall Lane he attempted to lower the age of the playing staff as well as trimming the wage bill and brought in players such as Martin Pike, Chris Wilder, Peter Beagrie, Peter Duffield, Tony Philliskirk, Mark Todd and Martin Kuhl, his first full campaign ending with a creditable ninth place finish in the old Division Two, but the following season proved difficult, and results saw him depart his position early in 1988, to be replaced by Dave Bassett. All that knew him at S2 will testify to his work ethic, fierce honesty and eye for a young player. His football career before, during and after his time at Sheffield United is a fine testimony to a man who had the beautiful game running through every vein in his body. The deepest condolences of all associated with Sheffield United Football Club goes out to Billy’s family at this sad time.

Obituary - Steve Burtenshaw Sheffield Wednesday are saddened to learn of the passing of our former manager Steve Burtenshaw, aged 86. Steve was at the Hillsborough helm for a near twoyear stint, from 1973 to 1975. Elsewhere, he managed Everton and QPR before a decade with Arsenal in a variety of roles, including caretaker manager, first team coach and chief scout. As a player, Steve spent his entire career with Brighton, for whom he made over 200 appearances. Our thoughts are with Steve’s family and friends at this difficult time.

Storey named in League One Team of the Week Owls defender Jordan Storey has earned a place in the League One Team of the Week. Wednesday defeated Doncaster 3-1 at the Eco-Power Stadium on Saturday and Storey has been named in the Team of the Week with a game-high whoscored. com rating of 7.9/10. Second half goals from Callum Paterson, Saido Berahino and Barry Bannan saw the Owls come from behind to post three points from the South Yorkshire derby. Storey has made six appearances since joining the Owls on loan from Preston last month.

Gary McSheffrey felt Rovers put in a good performance against Sheffield Wednesday but ran out of steam late in the second half. Rovers took the lead through an excellent penalty from Dan Gardner. From that point, McSheffrey’s side had a couple of chances to extend their lead but paid the price for not taking them as a strong Owls side worked their way back into the game from the 70th minute onwards to win 3-1.

“I thought it was a really exciting game between two good teams, which had two unbelievable goals and had two good defences. “In the first half, they were a little more aggressive than us and I wanted us to have a little bit more belief on the ball, which we had in the second period. “We’d worked on free kicks in the week, because we know they run late on a high line and you’re not always sure the linesman will see it. “Apart from that, I think we were the team in the ascendency second half and looked most likely to win it. “I don’t regard it as two points dropped, but a point gained against a really good team. Kudos to the lads, they came back into it. “Ollie’s goal was a screamer, as was theirs. Like I said, it was a game between two good teams, where both sets of players performed to the absolute maximum.”

On the loss: “We got our noses in front thanks to a great penalty. Our shape was good and we soaked up pressure which allowed us to hit them on the counter-attack “We felt in control but their ex-Premier League and international players shone through and gave them that bit of extra quality that made it hard to control for us. “All of the goals were avoidable though, which is frustrating. “We have to draw a line in the sand and go again. We have to keep going and grinding through this period.” On Rovers not taking their chances: “We had a massive chance to make it 2-0 and if that would have gone in I think it would have been game over, and we would have seen out the game. “We put in a good performance, and the fans could see that, but we ran out of steam.”
