REGION to host cultural EVENTS FOR Women’s EUROS Academy Upholstery Sheffield & Rotherham are 2 of 10 local authorities across England that will host a vibrant arts programme as part of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 in England this summer – part of an exciting national cultural programme supported by £800,000 funding from Arts Council England, thanks to National Lottery players. Running alongside the tournament from 6-31 July and delivered in collaboration with the ten local authorities, across nine Host Cities - Brighton & Hove, London, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Rotherham, Sheffield, Southampton, Trafford and Wigan & Leigh - the cultural programme is

set to reach nearly 3 million people and invite sports audiences and participants to engage with culture at an important moment for the country. Over 26 action-packed days, 31 UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 matches will be played by 16 teams across nine English cities from 6 - 31 July. A record number of fans are set to attend in person with a further 250 million across the world watching the action unfold on TV. It promises to be the biggest women’s European sporting event in history. As a city rich in arts and cultural heritage, Sheffield is renowned for creativity, with a strong cultural sector as well as deep roots in

football heritage. Many of the features of the modern games were piloted in Sheffield, and the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 tournament and cultural programme is an amazing opportunity to celebrate the past, present and future of the women’s game. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Executive Member for City Futures: Development, Culture and Regeneration at Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield is a city full of creative talent and ingenuity, which is reflected in our strong cultural sector so I know this exciting programme will be a huge hit alongside UEFA Women’s EURO 2022. Bringing sport and culture together means

we can really put on a show for all our visiting fans, inspire more local people to get involved and more women and girls to take up a long term interest in football.” Cllr David Sheppard, Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, said: “We’re really excited for the cultural programme, giving local people the opportunity to be involved with such prestigious projects and artists, with thanks to the National Lottery and Arts Council England. “We’re proud to welcome the record-breaking UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 tournament this summer to Rotherham’s New York

Jason Manford BRINGS HIS NEW SHOW TO THE DOME He’s back! It’s been a busy few years for Jason since his last smash hit stand up show but fans of his Absolute Radio show will know this nationally acclaimed comedian hasn’t changed a bit. ‘Like Me’ is Jason’s latest comic offering set to hit road, and is sure to be ‘expert observational comedy’ (The Guardian) mixed with ‘comic gold’ (Mail on Sunday). Jason said: “After the fun we had on my last tour ‘Muddle Class’, I’m excited to get back on

the road with my new stand up show, ‘Like Me’. In these trying times it’s always important to be able to get away for a couple of hours and exercise the old chuckle muscle! See you then.” ‘First & Last’ (BBC One), ‘The Masked Singer’ (ITV1), ‘What Would Your Kid Do?’ (ITV1), ‘Olivier Awards’ (ITV1), ‘Scarborough’ (BBC One), ‘8 out of 10 Cats’ (Channel 4), ‘The Nightly Show’ (ITV1), ‘Sunday Night at the Palladium’ (ITV1), ‘Live at the Apollo’ (BBC One), ‘Have I Got News

USEFUL NUMBERS

News, Information and Advice prepayment meter crisis call for ban on wipes

A sixth (15%) of prepayment meter customers have avoided using energy for two days or more this winter because they cannot afford to top up — up by a third (36%) compared to this time last year, according to Uswitch.com, the comparison and switching service. Around 4.5 million energy customers use prepayment meters for their energy, paying £97.40 a month on average. Prepayment energy prices tend to be higher, owing to the extra cost of running the infrastructure, meaning prepayment customers typically pay more for their energy than those on a fixed deal with a standard meter, who pay £92.70 a month on average. People on prepayment meters currently pay £56.40 more than those on fixed tariffs over the course of a year. The new findings from Uswitch suggest that the increase in the cost of living is already having an impact, with many prepayment meter customers already struggling with their energy bills, even before the energy price cap rises in April by £708 from £1,309 to £2,017. Prepayment meter customers say that topping up their meter with £10 a year ago would buy enough energy to last an average of 5.8 days. £10 now lasts just 4.4 days, meaning people now need to top up seven times a month on average, versus five previously. It’s likely when the prepayment cap rises to £2,017, on April 1st, that households could see a £10 top up last for even less time than they typically budget for. A fifth (21%) of those with prepayment meters have skipped hot meals because they cannot afford to top up, an increase of almost a quarter (23%) on the proportion who did so at this time last year. Over a third (35%) have worn a coat, hat and gloves indoors to fend off the cold rather than putting the heating on, while nearly a fifth (19%) have sat in the dark to avoid using energy. One in 10 (10%) of people have also not been able to make an important call because they ran out of battery on their mobile phone while avoiding charging in order to save energy. Nearly a sixth (13%) of those on prepayment meters say they want to move to a traditional meter instead, while 16% of people who have either not tried to move to a credit meter, or were not successful in switching over, did not realise it was even possible to move. Of those who have considered switching to a traditional meter, 13% said their landlord had or would prevent them from doing so, while one in ten (12%) are confused by the process. Meanwhile, 7% of people who tried to move were prevented from doing so because their supplier said they were in too much debt, while 6% could not afford to pay the upfront cost of a deposit for a new meter and 5% failed a credit check. Jean Hayes, community engagement lead at Uswitch. com said: “The upcoming increase in the energy price cap is going to be challenging for everyone, but people on prepayment meters are set to be hit hardest. Prepayment customers are often the most financially vulnerable, and our research suggests some are already being forced to make a tough choice between heating and eating. As the rapidly rising cost of living eats into many households’ budgets, it’s alarming to see that a sixth of people with prepayment meters have already felt compelled to avoid using their electricity for days at a time this year - and this is before the new energy price cap even takes effect. Prepayment meters often make energy more expensive than standard credit meters, so anyone who is finding it unaffordable should speak to their supplier and see if moving to a standard meter could be an option for them.”

Yorkshire Water and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has called for a ban on plastics in wet wipes and all single-use sanitary items, as well as an end to ‘Fine to Flush’ labelling and mandatory ‘Do Not Flush’ warnings on single use sanitary items packaging. In evidence supplied to the government, Yorkshire Water has also called for an extension of the responsibility of manufacturers to cover cost of educating customers about correct methods of disposal, and clean-up costs resulting from incorrect disposal. Ben Roche, director of wastewater at Yorkshire Water, said: “Wet wipes containing plastic, which do not break down in the sewer like toilet paper, are regularly flushed into our sewer network. These have a significant impact on the operation of our network and can lead to restricted toilet use, sewage entering homes and gardens, sewage escapes into the local environment or pollution to local watercourses. We have backed Fleur Anderson’s bill to ban plastics in wet wipes and are urging the government to take further action to ban plastics in all single use sanitary items. We are also calling for the government to increase responsibility of manufacturers of all single use sanitary items to cover cost of educating customers about correct methods of disposal, and the clean-up costs that come from incorrect disposal. We millions of pounds of customers’ bills, money which could be better spent elsewhere, to clear these blockages and believe this cost should be covered by manufacturers of wet wipes and plastic-containing sanitary products. We have concerns that the current ‘Fine to Flush‘ standard is not reflective of real-world customer behaviour and means many products that pass the standard still have the potential to cause blockages. The standard sends a confusing message to customers and therefore makes behaviour change more difficult. We believe the government should introduce mandatory ‘Do Not Flush’ labelling of single use sanitary items to remove confusion around what can and can’t be flushed down the toilet.” The UK uses 11 billion wet wipes per year and 90% of those contain plastic. In 2021, 45% of the blockages Yorkshire Water removed from the sewer network in the region were caused by wet wipes being incorrectly flushed down toilets, costing millions of pounds to resolve. Ana Cowie, marine pollution officer at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, said: “Wet wipes are one of the most common litter items found on Yorkshire’s beaches. They are choking our seas and marine wildlife, and when they are flushed away, they enter our rivers and seas and take an extremely long time to break down. They turn into microplastics that are eaten by marine wildlife before entering our food chain. Micro plastics are extremely difficult to remove from our environment, so prevention is vital. Together we are calling for urgent action and a ban on plastics in wet wipes and all single use and sanitary items as well as ‘do not flush’ labelling.” Across the water industry, blockages caused by baby and toddler wipes, cleaning wipes, and facial and hand wipes cost around Ј100m to clear.

Let’s get counting stars!

People are being asked to take part in an annual Star Count to record how clear our view is of the night sky. CPRE, the countryside charity, is working with the British Astronomical Association’s Commission for Dark Skies to map light pollution levels across the country. In the biggest citizen science project of its kind, people are being asked to count the number of stars they see in the Orion constellation to help map the best and worst places in the UK to enjoy a star-filled night sky. The results will be compared with 2021’s findings, gathered during lockdown, which revealed a notable drop in the number of people experiencing severe light pollution given urban areas were much quieter and fewer large buildings were in use. A clear view of a star-filled night sky has a hugely beneficial effect on our mental health and, like access to other forms of nature, helps reduce stress and increase a sense of peace and wellbeing. Research has even shown that regularly spending time looking at the stars can lower blood pressure and reduce depression. Yet, the night sky, which is a hugely significant part of our natural environment, has no legal protection. Tom Fyans, deputy chief executive of CPRE, the countryside charity, said: “The night sky is one half of our experience of nature; but we don’t often think of it like that. In and of itself, it helps balance our mental health and boost our emotional wellbeing. Recollect that experience of a starry sky and you instinctively know it soothed you. But our view of the night sky – and all the benefits it undoubtedly brings – is being blotted out by light pollution. Like all forms of pollution, it is damaging our mental and physical health, and also having a severe impact on wildlife. Yet, it is a form of pollution that is allowed to increase year on year without any effort being made to control the damage it is causing.” Light pollution means many people only experience a limited view of the night sky, and it also disrupts wildlife’s natural patterns. By showing where views are most affected by light pollution, the evidence can be used to help protect and enhance the nation’s dark skies, improving our health, wellbeing, wildlife and the environment. In 2021, over 7,000 people took part in CPRE’s Star Count. The proportion of people reporting ‘severe light pollution’, defined as ten stars or fewer being visible to the naked eye in the Orion constellation, had declined from 61% to 51%. The proportion of ‘truly dark skies’, defined as over 30 stars being visible within the Orion constellation, had increased from 3% to 5%. This was likely due to the count taking place during lockdown, with reduced levels of artificial light leading to a clearer view of the night sky. Now people are being urged to once again come together for one of the nation’s biggest citizen science projects to help discover if light pollution has increased since the end of lockdown – and where the best views of the stars can be found. Emma Marrington, CPRE dark skies campaigner, said: “We need your help to find out if light pollution

The results from Star Count will help us create a map of where star-spotters are enjoying deep, dark star-filled skies. By showing on a map where light pollution is most serious, we can work with local councils and others to decide what to do about it. Star Count is a great way to switch off from the distractions of daily life and reconnect with nature – and by taking part as a citizen scientist, you can help us protect and improve everyone’s view of a clear, sparkling night sky.” Bob Mizon, of the British Astronomical Association’s Commission for Dark Skies, said: “The night sky is a great antidote to the stresses of modern life; you go out, look up and suddenly everything is calm. The stars made every atom in our bodies; they are our chemical parents. They’re intimately connected to us and even in these light polluted days people have a real desire to see the stars. Just as we have an affinity with trees and the rest of nature, we have a connection to the night sky. It is literally 50 per cent of our environment – from east to west – and it is the only part of our environment that has no protection in law. People are very rapidly coming to the conclusion that what we do to the environment has a direct impact on our wellbeing. The same as coral reefs dying off and rivers clogged with plastic bags – one more aspect of our impact on the environment is our pollution of the night sky and yet it is completely unprotected.”

Sheffield Music Trails return THIS April! liftING the lid on SHEFFIELD’S teen hysteria Following a hugely successful debut last August, the Sheffield Music Trails return bigger and better than ever for their second year on Saturday 2nd April, providing a full day of free entry shows across 19 independent music venues throughout Sheffield. This includes venues from Castlegate through to Kelham Island, Abbeydale Road to Heeley and West Street down to Leadmill Road. Originally conceived as a multi-weekend celebration, this year’s trail condenses all the excitement of the festival into a single day, offering music-lovers an opportunity to experience a massive variety of amazing performances by some of the finest acts from South Yorkshire and beyond, as well as reconnecting with their favourite venues and discovering some hidden gems after the pandemic

kept us away from them for so long - all with absolutely no entry fees. Topping the bill at The Leadmill is North London based indie-pop band Kawala, whose latest single ‘Hypnotised’ has been named BBC Radio 1’s ‘Hottest Record in the World’ as of Monday 21st Feb 2022. There’s no shortage of talent and variety throughout the day either, with local acts such as Leona Nørskov (The

Voice UK) and Bedroom High Club amongst those representing the region. Alongside the fantastic local artists, the addition of UK touring acts such as Abbie Ozard, Jonny Brown (Twisted Wheel), Youth Sector, Voodoo Bandits and Studio Electrophonique add a truly special dimension to the festival, establishing it as a major nationwide celebration of music. Set up as a joint venture, the trail was funded by

South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority & Sheffield City Council, via funding from central government, in order to support the cultural and creative industries in the region. This funding is all in recognition of the hardship faced by the sector throughout the pandemic, and provides a muchneeded financial boost for each and every participant as we celebrate the spaces that make our city special.

Hotly-tipped Indie band Kawala headline the Free Festival at The Leadmill

It was originally unveiled to honour the heroes of the Great War but it begrudgingly became a home for heroes of a very different kind in the sixties. Sheffield City Hall’s roster of artists that played in the era reads like a who’s who of entertainment: Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan to three gigs by the Beatles to name but a few. There were also landmark shows by local acts that went on to make their mark both nationally and internationally. They included Vance Arnold (who would find worldwide fame as Joe Cocker), Dave Berry and Karen Young. Bob Dylan’s 1965 show at the venue even made it onto the silver screen via its inclusion in D. A. Pennebaker’s ‘Don’t Look Back’ film. Sheffield City Hall’s story is told in the brand new 10th

anniversary edition of the ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1960s Sheffield’. Author Neil Anderson said: “Sheffield City Hall has had to adapt to some pretty major cultural changes in its 90 year history but none were as seismic as the arrival of ‘Beatlemania’ in the 1960s. “Despite originally opening as a speakers hall and a destination for classical concerts it had little choice but to accommodate changing tastes if it was to survive and it ended up staging some of the most memorable concerts of the era with people still cherishing their tickets and memories decades on.” The ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1960s Sheffield’ also celebrates long gone after dark and cultural icons like King Mojo, the Esquire, the Cavendish, Club 60, the Heart Beat, the Penthouse, the Locarno and the

Sidewalk Café. King Mojo became the cover star following a poll that saw it voted the most popular venue of the era. The sixties nightscene underwent massive cultural change in Sheffield as the post-war austerity paled into insignificance and teenage pop and fashion came to the fore.

Neil Anderson said: “The sixties were an incredibly exciting time to grow up in Sheffield. I’ve really tried to capture the excitement of the time and represent the major cultural shifts that were happening in society.” * The book is on sale now priced £19.95 from www. dirtystopouts.com

BLADES GOOD RUN COMES TO AN END Darren Moore: PostUnited’s nine-game unbeaten run came to a disappointing end in the capital on Saturday afternoon. Just like at Bramall Lane in October, Jake Cooper scored the decisive goal from a set-piece in what was a scrappy encounter for the duration. Heckingbottom made four changes for the trip to The Den. Gordon made his league debut in place of the suspended Goode, whilst McBurnie, Hourihane and Ndiaye were all recalled as Gibbs-White, Fleck and Berge dropped to the bench. United had a half chance inside the opening 20 seconds, but McBurnie couldn’t get over a bouncing ball to really trouble Bialkowski, but in the truth the opening 20 minutes or so were a real war of attrition, until Norwood volleyed over from the edge of the area after Robinson’s long throw wasn’t fully cleared by the hosts.

On the half hour there was brief concern for the welfare of Baldock, who appeared to be clutching his hamstring. Thankfully the wing-back appeared to slowly run it off and on 35 minutes, Hourihane crossed to the back post and Egan rose highest, but his header was grasped by Bialkowski. A stalemate of an opening 45 minutes ended with Ndiaye being cautioned following a disagreement

Blades fans helped raise almost £1,000 for Weston Park Cancer Charity via a bucket collection before the game against Luton Town earlier this season. The visit of Weston Park’s volunteer bucket collectors was a welcome

sight and marked the charity’s first visit to Bramall Lane since lockdown restrictions were eased ahead of the 2021/22 football season. The funds raised by the collection will help Weston Park Cancer Charity make a difference

with Malone. United registered an early shot on goal at the beginning of the second period, whether Robinson meant it or not only he knows, but Bialkowski needed to tip it over. At the other end, the home side broke and Baldock halted the progress of Burey and was cautioned before Foderingham spilled a shot from McNamara but Saville’s follow up was

subsequently cleared. Just after the hour though, Millwall took the lead from a free-kick after Norrington-Davies had fouled McNamara on the right. Jed Wallace delivered to the back post and COOPER got a run on the United defence to power a header past Foderingham, on another day a foul for blocking off could have been awarded. Norwood clipped

an effort over from

another well worked corner routine, prior to Norrington-Davies being booked for a rash tackle. United pinned the hosts back in the final ten minutes but try as they might United couldn’t break Millwall’s resistance, with Bialkowski denying Gibbs-White from Berge’s inch perfect through ball.

Charlton talking points

The Owls posted a 2-0 win over Charlton at Hillsborough on Saturday and here is a selection of talking points from Darren Moore’s post-match press conference.

ON THE GAME We were dominant from start to finish and I was really impressed with the concentration levels of the players. When you score so early it’s easy to think the game will be easy but there is no such thing as an easy game. You have to continue your work rate and concentration and we did that today. We thoroughly deserved the three points and we take that and move on to the next game on Tuesday night. After leading 2-0 at half time that was the minimum for the result, I wanted a third, but I will take 2-0 and a clean sheet.

ON THE COLLECTIVE This is all about the squad and players giving their all for this football club. We’ve had players playing out of their natural positions for large parts of the season and they’ve got their heads down and got on with it for the good of Sheffield Wednesday. Marvin Johnson, Callum Paterson…I am indebted to them because they have stepped into the breach when we needed it the most. I am pleased to see them taking the plaudits now because they have done the hard yards.

ENTERING THE TOP 6 I don’t look at the table for too long at this part of the season. Nothing is won or lost in February. We can talk about the table in May. We are in the top six and that is the aim and we are looking up, not down. We can never be satisfied, we

must always have that desire and appetite to get better and want more. It is very congested around there and we have seen a lot of movement recently. There will be plenty of twists and turns to come and we can only focus on Sheffield Wednesday. ON THE TREATMENT TABLE We are getting players out of the treatment room and that’s a manager’s dream really. I want as many players as possible for the rest of the season. I want those headaches as a manager. Tuesday will come too soon for Lee Gregory but let’s see for Saturday. We saw some more of Lewis today which is another big positive as well as having big Dominic back on the bench. The injured players are getting better and hopefully the good news will keep on coming.

McSheffrey delighted with character in Wimbledon comeback Rovers boss Gary McSheffrey hailed the character of his side as they fought back from two goals down to earn an important point at AFC Wimbledon in Sky Bet League One. Having trailed at the hour mark courtesy of goals from Jack Rudoni and Luke McCormick, Rovers roared into life and a quick-fire double from captain Tommy Rowe saw them draw level. Neither side could find the winner but both went close, with Ben Jackson seeing an effort cleared off the line while Jonathan Mitchell made a superb save deep into stoppage time. McSheffrey believes Rovers are increasingly suited to handling setbacks and recovering during matches as they continue their development under the manager. On the character shown in making the comeback: “Eight weeks ago, I don’t think we come back from that. “We’re starting to see some team spirit and character in a big way now, and some self-belief. “It’s a big improvement in terms of a comeback and not losing a game of football when we’re two goals down. “We’ll take it and we’ll move on.” On how the game played out: “If you’d have offered me a point on 60 minutes then I’d have snapped your hand off, with us being two down. “I said to the lads that we can’t afford to wait until we’re two down with 60 minutes gone to start playing. “It was a really poor first half, with no composure, people looking nervous and panicky on the ball and making poor decisions. “The first goal they scored was cheap. We have to organise a bit quicker and make better decisions. “But on saying that the last half hour was superb. Tommy Rowe was brilliant with two great goals, Kyle Knoyle with two good assists and we could have won it. “On the other hand, Johnny [Mitchell] has saved us at the end from their header.” On Tommy Rowe leading by example: “The lads were looking around for someone to do something and he’s done that. “Knoyley has put a good ball into him at the back post. We felt putting him out on the left that he’d be a threat to their right back and he showed great composure to bring the ball down on his chest, shift it and shoot. “With the second one it’s another great ball in from Knoyley and he’s freed himself up, rose like a salmon and put in a great header.” On another important result: “I’m satisfied with the result after going two goals down. “The run Wimbledon are on, they’re no whipping boys - that is a ninth draw in 15 for them. It’s not like they’re getting peppered and losing heavily. “It’s a difficult place to come so we’ll take the point and get back on the bus. “You look at the scores elsewhere and everyone is rolling their sleeves up and having a go. “There’s been some big wins so it keeps it quite tight.”

It all came together in the end Warne

Rowe pleased as Rovers make their point at Wimbledon The skipper scored twice in three second half minutes to earn Rovers a share of the spoils at the Cherry Red Records Stadium after the Dons took the lead through Jack Rudoni and Luke McCormick. While disappointed it took Rovers a while to get going in the game, Rowe says recovering from such a dire position means the final outcome was satisfactory.

“I thought it was a game where both teams were trying to score. It sounds an obvious thing to say but neither side sat behind the ball. The score line could have been anything. “We should have scored more goals, as should have they. They are a footballing side but all their chances came from long balls. We could have dropped our line a little bit deeper but if you do that, they pass through the middle of the pitch. “At times, I didn’t think we defended as well as we would have liked but going forward, I thought we were ok. The players looked a little leggy in the first half and in the second half, they were a lot better. Haks had a positive influence when he came on and Jordi added legs to the side. Chieo was virtually unplayable, at times. “It all came together in the end but it didn’t seem it at the time.”

On recovering from falling two goals down: “It was an underwhelming first half performance and we had it all to do in the second half being two goals down. When you fight back like that in any game and you come away, it leaves you feeling a lot better than you would. We’ll take the positives from that. We obviously wanted the three points and we’re still on a mission to pick up as many as we can. We’ll use this as a great performance in terms of getting something that we haven’t had all season and that elusive point. You want the three points but to see that inner strength from the boys and discipline to dig in is great. At certain times this season we’ve found it hard to get a goal back and hold it. I think the point is deserved.” On growing confidence in the squad: “There’s a confidence around the place and an air that we can do things that we probably didn’t think we could a few months back. We have to channel that well and use it to play the way we have that has brought us success. At times we’ve got away from what we’ve done really well. It took two goals going in for us to get that but thankfully we got our second wind and kicked on to get back into the game. It shows where we are at the minute and we’ve got to continue it.” On getting ready for the next game: “Now we can use this week to reorganise, get some energy back into legs and hopefully be fully focused going into next weekend. We need to keep that fight and some of the emotion and channel it into what has been successful for us. The fight is there in terms of wanting to prove people wrong. When people do have you down, I think it’s why we’ve positioned ourselves well for the run in. We’ve still go to do a lot of work to get to where we want to get so it starts tomorrow as we reenergise and go again.”
