Final call to apply for Omicron Grant Sheffield City Council is encouraging all eligible businesses who have not yet applied for an Omicron Hospitality, Accommodation and Leisure Grant (OHLG) to do so by the new extended deadline of 11th March. This is a one-off grant of up to £6,000 for businesses that offer in person services from their premises. It is available to rate payers and the amount of funding available will be based on the property’s

rateable value. The Council has also put in place a matching scheme for non-rate paying businesses in the same sectors. To be eligible, businesses must meet specific criteria set by Government which are available to view on the Council’s website. Sheffield City Council was allocated £4.4m to award to Sheffield’s eligible rate paying businesses in the target sectors. This is an estimate provided

by Government but the final amount will be determined by the number of grants the Council is able to pay. Businesses should submit their applications as soon as possible in case they are asked to provide further evidence to support their application. Applications must be submitted to the Council no later than 11th March. Any applications received after this date will not be considered. Cllr Paul Turpin,

Executive Member for Inclusive Economy, Jobs and Skills, said: “Businesses have faced some enormous challenges throughout the past 18 months and we are really keen to see as many eligible businesses as possible receive their grant worth up to £6,000. “As with previous Covid grants for rate payers, we have no discretion over this funding so, should businesses not claim all the £4.4m, we have no option but to

THE PRODIGY RETURN TO THE STAGE IN SHEFFIELD The Prodigy this week announced they are going back on tour with their first live performance since the tragic passing on iconic frontman Keith Flint being held at Sheffield’s O2 Academy on Friday 8th July and Saturday 9th July, a venue they previously played in 2011. The group will return with a run of live dates in England across July this year to coincide with the 25th anniversary of their iconic album, ‘The

Fat Of The Land’, an album that included their UK number 1 seminal hits Firestarter & Breathe. Writing on social media, the group said: “We can’t wait to get back onstage to play our tunes for the people again. The 25th anniversary of ‘Fat Of The Land’ felt like the right time for us to step up.” They also hinted that new music could follow too. They wrote: “We’ll be droppin tunes from all our albums and maybe

some s**t u haven’t heard before.” They concluded by saying that they are dedicating the shows to late frontman Keith Flint, adding: “This one’s for Flinty…Now let’s f***** go!” Tickets are available on pre-sale for mailing list subscribers from Wednesday 9th March and on General sale from Friday 11th.

SNODGRASS 1 week before Grandad died we bought him a snowboard... He went downhill very quickly after that. Why was the baby jalapeno shivering? He was a little chilli. The other day I saw a bucket at the hardware store with a sign that said: dead batteries - £1 each. I thought to myself: “These should be free of charge.” My friend went completely bald years ago, he still carries a comb with him. He just can’t part with it. I once bought a wooden car. Wooden engine, wooden doors, wooden wheels, wooden seats, put the wooden key in the wooden ignition. Wooden start. This morning my son said his ear hurt and I asked : on the inside or outside? So he walks out the front door then comes back in and says: “both”. My friend claims that he “accidentally” glued himself to his autobiography, but I don’t believe him. But that’s his story and he’s sticking to it.

Tickets available from Ticketmaster.

remembering loved ones plea for kidney donors meter prices highest

Sheffield Cathedral is inviting people from Sheffield, South Yorkshire and the wider community to honour loved ones who died during the pandemic by adding their names to a special Wall of Reflection as part of the National Day of Reflection. Led by end-of-life charity Marie Curie, Sheffield Cathedral’s Wall of Reflection is one of a UK-wide series of tributes being created to mark the National Day of Reflection on 23 March – a day to reflect on the lives of the people who have died during the last two years and support the millions of people who are grieving. Whether from Covid or any other cause. The Very Reverend Abi Thompson, Dean of Sheffield Cathedral said: Covid and the challenges of the last two years has impacted on us all. And although we are now learning to live with Covid, people are still grieving from the loss of loved ones. It is important we provide a place to soothe this pain and to give people the chance to reflect, to grieve, to remember and to celebrate their family and friends who are no longer with us.” People will be able to add their memories of loved ones and their prayers to a Wall of Reflection in Sheffield Cathedral from 10 March through to 23 March, the National Day of Reflection and also in a Memorial Book which will remain open until 30 October. A memorial service will take place in the Cathedral at 5pm on the National Day of Reflection with music and the opportunity to light a candle for loved ones. At the end of October, the traditional time of year for remembering those we have lost, the Cathedral will be holding a further memorial service to enable the community to come together to mourn those we have lost over the past few years. Sheffield Cathedral is open 8:30am to 5:30pm, Monday to Saturday and 8am to 5pm on a Sunday. To find out more about the National Day of Reflection and how to get involved visit mariecurie.org.uk/ dayofreflection The Marie Curie Support Line can help if you, or someone you care about is grieving. As more than 4,600 people, including 79 patients in Derbyshire, wait for a kidney transplant, and with this figure expected to rise, NHS Blood and Transplant is calling on everyone in Derbyshire to share their organ donation decision and also take a moment to consider living kidney donation this World Kidney Day (Thursday 10 March 2022). Kidney transplants have been the hardest hit area of organ transplantation throughout the pandemic, with deceased donor transplants down 22% and living donor transplants down 60% - an overall drop in kidney transplants of 32% in 2020/21, compared to 2019/2020. This means around 1,100 fewer patients received a kidney transplant in 2020/21, compared to the year before. In living donor transplantation, 422 patients benefitted instead of the usual 1,000 and there were 500 fewer deceased donor transplants. Sadly, the thousands of people waiting for a kidney transplant may end up waiting longer for a deceased or living kidney donor as they’ve been unable to have a transplant for most of the pandemic and the waiting list has increased. Living donor transplantation opens up opportunities for patients wating for a kidney transplant by minimising the time people need to rely on dialysis and by offering patients who wait the longest i.e. those who are most difficult to match, are particularly ‘sensitised’ (which means they have higher levels of antibodies which could cause their body to reject a transplanted organ) or are from a Black, Asian or minority ethnic background, the chance of a successful transplant. People can donate a kidney in life to a particular individual (a relative, friend or someone they know who is in need of a transplant) or choose to donate anonymously where their kidney will either go to a high priority patient on the transplant list or create a chain of transplants via the UK living kidney sharing scheme. Even though the law around organ donation has now changed to an opt out system across England, Wales, and Scotland, many people are still not aware that families will still always be consulted before organ donation goes ahead.

You could be saving up to £4,197 a year by giving up a pack of cigarettes a day according to new research, with savings of £598 a year for less frequent smokers. Experts calculated how much money you could be saving based on the average UK cost for a pack of 20 cigarettes over various timespans. They broke down how much you would save throughout your lifetime if you kicked the habit for good, as well as comparing what you could be spending the money on instead. The research reveals that if you are smoking one pack of cigarettes per day at the average UK cost of £11.50 per pack, you would save £349.79 per month or £4,197 over the course of a year by quitting – the cost of a family holiday abroad for four people, the cost of running your car for ten years or paying for 11 years’ worth of gym memberships. Someone who regularly smokes a full pack of cigarettes a day can expect to see staggering savings in the long run - banking up to £41,975 over ten years from quitting smoking. This is the equivalent of a 20% deposit on a £200,000 property, the price of a Porsche Cayman or nearly a kilogram of 24 carat gold. For people who are only smoking a couple of cigarettes a day, the cost can still quickly add up. If you are smoking just one pack of cigarettes a week at the same average cost, you could still make savings of £598 a year, or £2,990 in your pocket over the next

five years. The money saved by quitting for one year, could cover the cost of a three-course meal for you and your significant other 11 times a year, the cost of nine weekly food shops or seven annual Netflix subscriptions. A spokesperson from IndeJuice added: “Many smokers are already aware of the harm imposed on their body by regularly smoking, but it is easy to overlook the financial savings that could be made by choosing to quit for good. When looking at Google Trends data over the past five years, there has been a significant increase in people searching the term ‘quit smoking’ year on year, with the exception of 2021 where there was a 2.3% decrease in searches from the previous year. As we emerge out of the pandemic, it is important that we continue to reflect on the health benefits of quitting for good, and the long-term savings offer an additional incentive to do so.”

A sixth (15%) of prepayment meter customers have avoided using energy for two days or more this winter because they cannot afford to top up — up by a third (36%) compared to this time last year, according to Uswitch.com, the comparison and switching service. Around 4.5 million energy customers use prepayment meters for their energy, paying £97.40 a month on average. Prepayment energy prices tend to be higher, owing to the extra cost of running the infrastructure. People on prepayment meters currently pay £56.40 more than those on fixed tariffs over the course of a year. The new findings from Uswitch suggest that the increase in the cost of living is already having an impact, with many prepayment meter customers already struggling with their energy bills, even before the energy price cap rises in April by £708 from £1,309 to £2,017. Prepayment meter customers say that topping up their meter with £10 a year ago would buy enough energy to last an average of 5.8 days. £10 now lasts just 4.4 days, meaning people now need to top up seven times a month on average, versus five previously. It’s likely when the prepayment cap rises to £2,017, on April 1st, that households could see a £10 top up last for even less time than they typically budget for. A fifth (21%) of those with prepayment meters have skipped hot meals because they cannot afford to top up, an increase of almost a quarter (23%) on the proportion who did so at this time last year. Over a third (35%) have worn a coat, hat and gloves indoors to fend off the cold rather than putting the heating on, while nearly a fifth (19%) have sat in the dark to avoid using energy. Nearly a sixth (13%) of those on prepayment meters say they want to move to a traditional meter instead, while 16% of people who have either not tried to move to a credit meter, or were not successful in switching over, did not realise it was even possible to move. Of those who have considered switching to a traditional meter, 13% said their landlord had or would prevent them from doing so, while one in ten (12%) are confused by the process. Meanwhile, 7% of people who tried to move were prevented from doing so because their supplier said they were in too much debt, while 6% could not afford to pay the upfront cost of a deposit for a new meter and 5% failed a credit check. Jean Hayes at Uswitch.com said: “The upcoming increase in the energy price cap is going to be challenging for everyone, but people on prepayment meters are set to be hit hardest. Prepayment customers are often the most financially vulnerable, and our research suggests some are already being forced to make a tough choice between heating and eating. As the rapidly rising cost of living eats into many households’ budgets, it’s alarming to see that a sixth of people with prepayment meters have already felt compelled to avoid using their electricity for days at a time this year - and this is before the new energy price cap even takes effect.

ban on wet wipes

Yorkshire Water and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has called for a ban on plastics in wet wipes and all single-use sanitary items, as well as an end to ‘Fine to Flush’ labelling and mandatory ‘Do Not Flush’ warnings on single use sanitary items packaging. In evidence supplied to the government, Yorkshire Water has also called for an extension of the responsibility of manufacturers to cover cost of educating customers about correct methods of disposal, and clean-up costs resulting from incorrect disposal. Ben Roche, director of wastewater at Yorkshire Water, said: “Wet wipes containing plastic, which do not break down in the sewer like toilet paper, are regularly flushed into our sewer network. These have a significant impact on the operation of our network and can lead to restricted toilet use, sewage entering homes and gardens, sewage escapes into the local environment or pollution to local watercourses. We have backed Fleur Anderson’s bill to ban plastics in wet wipes and are urging the government to take further action to ban plastics in all single use sanitary items. We are also calling for the government to increase responsibility of manufacturers of all single use sanitary items to cover cost of educating customers about correct methods of disposal, and the clean-up costs that come from incorrect disposal. We spend millions of pounds of customers’ money which could be better spent elsewhere, and believe this cost should be covered by manufacturers of wet wipes and plastic-containing sanitary products.

After the devastating news last week that Stannington Brass Band is to lose its rehearsal room and base in the heart of Stannington, they have come home triumphant from the Yorkshire Area Brass Band Championships as winners of the First Section. Under the baton of Sam Fisher, they beat twelve other bands at Huddersfield Town Hall this weekend and, along with the runnerup band, have the honour of representing the Yorkshire Area at the National Finals in September. All the bands played the same test piece - Spectrum by Gilbert Vinter and were judged “blind” by well-respected adjudicators Alan Morrison and Andrea Price. Sam commented “I cannot thank the band enough for their hard work and commitment

Make business rates fairer to safeguard future of community pubs Consumer group the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) is urging the Government to radically reform the Business Rates system in England to make it fairer for local pubs. With the beer and pubs industry still rebuilding from COVID-19, fundamental changes to the Business Rates system are needed if pubs are to survive and thrive at the heart of community life. That’s the message from CAMRA, which represents pub-goers across the country. As well as calls to make sure online businesses pay their fair share,

the Campaign wants ministers to make sure that the Business Rates system better recognises the role of local pubs as community hubs. This could involve changes to the system that better reflect a pub’s profits – rather than just their overall turnover – and ending the current system whereby licensees who invest in their pub are then penalised with higher bills. CAMRA is also urging the Scottish and Welsh Governments for similar changes to their business rates system, as well as asking all parties in Northern Ireland to commit to reviewing NI’s

business rates system after May’s Assembly elections. The call echoes CAMRA’s submission into an Inquiry on the effect of Business Rates on the beer and pubs industry, which has been held by a cross-party group of MPs on the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group. Commenting, CAMRA Chairman Nik Antona said: “Local pubs are at the heart of communities up and down the country and play a vital role in bringing people together and tackling loneliness and social isolation. As we emerge from the

Covid-19 pandemic, our locals are needed more than ever before. “But even before the pandemic pubs were hard hit by the huge and unfair burden of business rates which unfairly penalise pubs more than other types of business. “With publicans facing huge increases in the cost of goods, energy and with rising staffing costs, it is absolutely vital that the Government urgently commits to changing the current business rates system to better support pubs – or else we could risk losing even more of our beloved locals for good.”

UKRAINIAN REFUGEE DONATION POINT OPENS AT CROOKES CLUB Last weekend Crookes Social Club on Mulehouse Road, Crookes opened its doors to donations for the Ukrainian Refugees. The club are pleading for local residents to donate whatever they can. The doors of the club will be open from 9:30am every day to collect donations. Maurice Champeau General Manager of Crookes Club said, “I have been moved to tears by what’s happening to the people of Ukraine, I feel so helpless, as a club we decided to do whatever

we can, and this is just one part of our plans to support the refugees”. The refugees are desperately in need of Blankets, Sleeping Bags, Children’s toys, long lasting dried food like rice, pasta and pulses, nappies, personal hygiene products particularly toothpaste and toothbrushes as well as ladies sanitary products and candles. We have been asked by The Red Cross, who will be distributing the donations, to not donate cloths as they are awash with donated clothing. The club will be doing

several fund-raising events over the coming weeks and months but the need for donations is NOW. Please add just one or two items to your weekly shop and drop them into the club.

For Further information please call Maurice Champeau, General Manager Crookes Club on 0114 266 0114 or at crookesclub@hotmail. co.uk

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury Moore: PostUNITED DENIED AT THE DEATH Darren Lincoln talking points United were denied all three points by a goal deep into stoppage-time in a pulsating clash on Friday evening. Billy Sharp’s second half header looked set to have given the Blades the spoils, but Ryan Yates headed home in the fourth minute of added time to rescue the visitors a point. Heckingbottom made five changes to face the Reds as Seriki made his full debut in place of the absent Baldock. Fleck, Berge, Ben Davies and Gibbs-White all returned to the starting XI. The first minute sent the tone for the half, as Forest had an early sight of goal. Foderingham palmed behind Johnson’s deflected effort and from the resulting corner, Davis headed wide. Sharp was inches away from a Norwood free kick at the other end before a flag was belatedly raised by the assistant referee. Following a flurry of

Forest corners, United broke at pace and after excellent work from Gibbs-White, Berge was afforded space and stung the palms of Horvath as Seriki then fired hard and low across goal on the rebound. Davis then played through Zinckernagel, but Foderingham made himself big to deny him, before Davies was brave at the back post to head behind under pressure from his namesake. On 32 minutes, referee Smith pointed to the spot after Spence got the better of NorringtonDavies from a right-wing position, subsequently it appeared both the offender and Robinson were booked, but thankfully Foderingham kept his composure and comfortably denied Johnson’s weak spot-kick. The game continued to be frantic until the break, with Garner also going into the book for dissent. The start of the second

half began with Forest on the front foot, as Davies did all he could to halt the progress of Davis, but was harshly booked. Garner’s rightwing corner was met by the head of Cook, but thankfully his header rattled the crossbar. At the other end, GibbsWhite was instrumental to some promising play, but the defender produced an excellent last-ditched tackle. On 67 minutes, United made a double change as Osborn and Jebbison replaced Seriki and Norwood as Heckingbottom opted

Have you ever wondered what it’s like behind the scenes at Bramall Lane? Sheffield United are delighted to announce the return of weekday tours of the famous Bramall Lane stadium. It’s been over two years since our ever-popular ground tours have taken

place as the world and, of course, football went into forced hibernation. To make it easier to take part, they will take place on a Wednesday evening on selected dates to give more the chance of the Bramall Lane experience! This is a fantastic chance for you or your group to take an intimate and

guided look around one of the most historic arenas in world sport.

for a change of shape and within two minutes United hit the front, slightly against the run of play. Gibbs-White picked the perfect moment to cross from the right and having got between Worrall and Spence, SHARP produced an excellent header to wrong foot Horvath with the ball nestling perfectly inside the bottom corner. United went looking a what would have been a decisive second and Horvath had to find a strong hand to deny Davies after Sharp had seen a header cleared from Fleck’s corner and

that was Sharp’s last contribution as McBurnie replaced him. Norrington-Davies, who wasn’t actually cautioned in the first half, hauled down Spence, but Foderingham got a touch on Colback’s free-kick. Five minutes of added time were signalled and Gibbs-White fashioned a chance for Jebbison but he was denied and right at the end, Forest snatched a point as YATES rose highest from another Garner corner to header into the far corner giving Foderingham no chance.

The Owls were defeated 3-1 by Lincoln at the LNER Stadium and here are Darren Moore’s post-match talking points. THE GAME We weren’t ourselves today. I was watching from the sidelines thinking that we didn’t quite look as bright as normal. Maybe the three-game weeks have caught up with us, maybe it was a game too many but I don’t want to take anything away from Lincoln, they changed their system, they played well today and deserved the win. We can do better, we know that, and we will do better. When the finishing line is in sight, results of this potential can happen so we take it on the chin and move on.

GETTING BODIES BACK The treatment room is clearing and that can only be a positive at this stage of the season. It was great to see Lee and Fis back today, they were only going to get 20 minutes or so, they have to be managed carefully. It’s the same with Lewis, he’s had some game time recently and as good as that’s been, his situation is the same as all the lads coming back, they can’t just be thrown in game after game.

BACK TO WORK I say it all the time but I am looking forward now to a full week’s work on the training ground and getting back on track. Like I say, we just weren’t ourselves today so we will drill down the best we can

but after that we get back out there on the training ground and we draw a line in the Lincoln game. It’s the same when we win, we look at it, we see where we can improve and we move on, which is to Cambridge on Saturday. ON THE TABLE I haven’t seen the table yet but our target was getting into the top six, that’s where we’ve been and that’s where we want to stay. Yes there will be setbacks but we have bounced back before and we will bounce back again. We played well but lost against Oxford, we played well against Rotherham and lost, now we have played not so well against Lincoln and lost and I fully expect this group of players to bounce back against Cambridge.

Rovers ‘must lick their wounds quickly’ says McSheffrey Gary McSheffrey felt Rovers were not nearly sharp enough in their play as they fell to defeat at Cheltenham Town. An Alfie May double plus headers from Ben Williams and Mattie Pollock saw the hosts run out 4-0 winners in the Sky Bet League One clash with Rovers having Adam Clayton sent off after picking up two yellow cards. McSheffrey was unhappy with the performance of his side but felt the sending off was harsh. On where things went wrong: “We started the game sloppily and they got onto every loose ball. “Our sharpness wasn’t at it and you could sense that they were really up for it. “We gave away far too many free kicks but I think it was because we weren’t sharp enough and getting close to them. “If you keep giving away free kicks eventually they’re going to punish you and Alfie [May] has scored a good goal. “We’ve lost 4-0 and Cheltenham have probably played a lot better than that and not got as good a result. “The damage was done in the first half when we were poor and it was our own individual errors and poor decision making. “I went with a few technical players over physicality and it probably wasn’t the game for that.” On the build-up: “It’s probably the best week’s preparation that we’ve had since I’ve been in charge. “The lads felt good. Everyone knew their roles and responsibilities. “But we got out on the pitch and didn’t play well enough. “We have to lick our wounds, go through it, assess it and reflect on where we need to be better as we focus on the next game.” On Adam Clayton’s sending off: “I thought it was soft and cheap. “I don’t think it was a yellow card for the first one. Adam has made a good strong tackle and three or four of their players have got in his face. It was two honest lads going in for a tackle and they’ve both got booked for their reactions and I thought it was a strange yellow, particularly with us getting the free kick. “The second one - he’s got up for a header but his arm is up there and in that situation you’re giving the referee a decision to make. “I didn’t see any movement in his arm to suggest he tried to get an arm in the lad’s face. “Once we went down to ten men it was an uphill battle and we just had to try to get back into the game in some way, but it wasn’t to be.

Coppinger working with Academy

Players from Rovers Academy Youth Development phase have begun working with club legend and now head of player development James Coppinger. Coppinger is focusing on developing their understanding of what it takes to become a professional footballer and to have a successful career in the game at any level. The 41-year-old did a presentation and talked to the U13 to U16s about developing a Pro Mindset in all walks of life, not just sport and this will undoubtedly help them in their football journey. This was the first in a series of meetings that will take place across the rest of the season in order to try to get the boys to start thinking differently in such areas as preparation, resilience, responsibilities, attitude and application to all areas in and around the game.

We need to get back at it - Warne

Paul Warne post MK Dons... “I think in the first half we were the better side, but in the second we didn’t do enough to take something from the game. “We didn’t move the ball quickly enough and it enabled the 10 players to get behind the ball. “I’ll watch the game back and try and reinforce how I felt. There’s no drama, we just have to discuss what went wrong. “We were playing a very good MK side and it might be a good wake-up call that we need to get back at it.”

Lead Youth Development phase coach Tony Mee said: “I read James’ book “Ahead of the Game” and it’s like a bible for young footballer’s to help them make the most of the opportunities they have. “As much as we advise them, when it comes from someone with James’ wealth of experience it carries a lot more weight. “The boys really engaged with the process and we’re looking forward to working with Copps over the rest of the season.”

Cooper extends Alty stay until end of the season Young Rotherham United defender Jake Cooper has extended his loan with National League outfit Altrincham, having impressed since making the temporary switch at the beginning of February. The 21-year-old has turned out three times for Alty since joining on loan and his new side have been unbeaten on the occasions that he has been involved, drawing on his debut before following it up with wins over King’s Lynn and Dagenham and Redbridge. The Robins are currently 17th in the National League but, at present, safely positioned clear of the drop zone. Also, among the ranks at Altrincham is former Millers favourite Ben Pringle. Cooper’s loan will now run until the end of the season, subject to EFL, National League and FA ratification.
