MAYOR SETS OUT £12 MILLION BOOST FOR SOUTH YORKSHIRE Mayor Dan Jarvis has set out plans for a multimillion-pound boost for walking, cycling and public transport – helping drive the shift towards sustainable transport and better quality of life for South Yorkshire communities. The Mayor’s inaugural £12m Sustainable Transport Fund would support investment in new cycle lanes, footpaths and transport infrastructure across the region, relieving congestion and improving air quality. Bus users, cyclists and pedestrians would benefit from the proposals, which include £2m towards walking and cycling improvements in Barnsley

town centre, a £2.8m investment in Doncaster’s Mexborough Interchange and linked developments, £2m to improve Eastgate/ Parkgate connectivity in Rotherham, and a £2.2m accessibility scheme in Sheffield City Centre. £2m would also be spent regionwide on a Transport Futures Development Fund and £1m on Active Travel Crossings. Mayor of South Yorkshire, Dan Jarvis, said: “Transforming South Yorkshire’s transport network has been a top priority during my term as Mayor. We’ve already made significant progress in opening greener travel choices across the region, investing millions in cycle

lanes, buses, footpaths and transport facilities. The Sustainable Transport Fund is designed to build on this foundation, offering new opportunities for local communities to access convenient, affordable, and accessible connections to the places we live, work, learn, visit, and play. It’ll help us move towards the step-change needed to cut congestion, reduce inequality, improve air quality, and achieve the net-zero future for South Yorkshire we all want to see.” Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “As our city grows and the climate emergency remains, we need to take action now to change

how we travel. This is not just a challenge for future generations but for all of us today. “We’re transforming connectivity and the way people can travel around Sheffield by putting infrastructure in place that will serve our city for years to come. This funding will provide vital investment to support our vision of a better connected city, where sustainable travel is an easy option. “Changing the way we travel is essential to delivering Clean Growth and better connectivity is central to making the whole city more sustainable, which will benefit everyone. The Sustainable Transport Fund forms part of Mayor

SUNDAY

Jarvis’ plans for a cleaner, greener and fairer South Yorkshire, through the delivery of an ambitious active travel network for the region by 2040 – made up of more than 620 miles of accessible walking and cycling routes, 800 safe crossings for people travelling on foot or by bike, and containing nearly 200 square miles of low-traffic neighbourhoods. The new Sustainable Transport grant, which would be split between the four South Yorkshire councils, will be formally agreed by local leaders at the Mayoral Combined Authority Board (SYMCA) meeting on Monday 21 March.

My landlord says he needs to come talk to me about how high my heating bill is. I told him: “My door is always open.” Sorry sir, we don’t serve time travelers here. A time traveller walks into a bar. Don’t you just hate that situation when you’re picking up your bags at the airport, and everyone’s luggage is better than yours. Worse case scenario. campaign cracks down on illegal tobacco £750,000 grant funding

This year on No Smoking Day (Wednesday 9th March) Smokefree Sheffield and Sheffield Trading Standards, launched a new campaign showing the real-life impacts of cheap and illicit tobacco and the importance of quitting smoking for all. In Sheffield around 1 in 5 adults smoke, and around 5 children start to smoke every day. The sale of cheap and illicit cigarettes not only makes it easier for young people to get hooked on smoking but puts money into the hands of criminals and can be used to fund crime in local communities. The prices of products also undermine efforts that local people are making to quit, adding further temptation to those in our most disadvantaged communities, and taking income away from honest businesses. Smokefree Sheffield is building on this year’s No Smoking Day, an annual health awareness day that intends to encourage smokers to not give up on giving up, and remind smokers it is never too late to try and every time you do brings you a step closer to your Smokefree goal. “Cheap and illicit tobacco helps keep people in a cycle of addiction as well as making it easier for children to access illegal cigarettes from a young age. The decline in smoking we’ve seen in Sheffield is very positive, but more needs to be done if we’re going to continue seeing this trend, tackling cheap and illicit tobacco is just one area we know we can make a difference for both individuals and the community. ” says Greg Fell, Director of Public Health Sheffield. “People don’t often think of it in this way, but the illegal tobacco trade actually operates in a similar way to drugs. There are large-scale organised crime groups that are paying vulnerable children and adults, such as those leaving care, immigrants or families struggling for money, to

travel abroad and smuggle illegal tobacco back into the country, or produce these counterfeit items,” continues Greg Fell. The new campaign, promoted across the city, demonstrates how cheap and illicit tobacco is not a victimless crime, and urges residents to report instances where they think people are producing or selling. In 2021/22 alone, reports from the people of Sheffield helped to remove 804,000 illegal cigarettes and 250.5kg of loose tobacco from our streets. “Our Trading Standards team are working hard to find and prosecute those responsible, but removing illegal tobacco from our communities is everyone’s responsibility. So even if you don’t smoke, reporting any known instances of sales can help take cheap and illicit tobacco off the streets of Sheffield,” says Councillor Alison Teal, Executive Member for Sustainable Neighbourhoods, Wellbeing, Parks and Leisure. With Sheffield’s success in declining smoking rates over the last five years and more recently the news that it is now below the national average of smokers, it’s important to continue the hard work and reduce the impact that smoking has on residents. In a recent joint operation with Greater Manchester and Scottish Trading Standards, warrants were executed and searches were conducted, which led to the seizure of more than half a million cigarettes and over 2,000 packets of hand-rolling tobacco. Support from the public is fundamental to successes like this and by spending time interacting with the public, it is hoped that the understanding of cheap and illicit tobacco will only continue to grow.

volunteer recognised for heritage work

A volunteer who helped Wentworth Woodhouse engage people online during the pandemic has been recognised for his exceptional service to the UK’s heritage sector. The Digital Heritage Hero Award, one of two Ecclesiastical Heritage Hero Awards, celebrates Steve Ash’s contribution to Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust’s Digital Project, which harnessed video to keep the heritage property on the public’s horizon during the pandemic. Steve has developed films about the Trust’s people and places, aims, and achievements, as well as created virtual tours, events and digital games which have engaged thousands of visitors and supporters. Sponsored by specialist heritage insurer Ecclesiastical, the Heritage Heroes Awards, now in their 12th year, are the Heritage Alliance’s celebration of the outstanding contribution Britain’s heritage volunteers make to society. Volunteers are vital for the protection of England’s heritage. From caring for rural heritage sites to engaging the next generation of visitors, volunteers’ skills, passion, and commitment are the backbone of the heritage sector. The awards were presented by Faith Kitchen, Customer Segment Director at Ecclesiastical. Each of the winners will receive an original hand-painted sign by Joby Carter, from Carters Steam Fair (the largest travelling vintage funfair in the world), showcasing the artistry and history of traditional fairground decorations. The virtual awards ceremony coincided with Heritage Day, the key event in the heritage sector calendar with speakers including the Minister for Sport, Tourism, Heritage and Civil Society Nigel Huddleston MP, the Chair of the National Lottery Heritage Fund Dr Simon Thurley CBE, and the new Chair of The Heritage Alliance Pam Alexander OBE. Faith Kitchen, Customer Segment Director at Ecclesiastical, said:

Congratulations to Steve for his tireless efforts supporting Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust’s Digital Project.” Pam Alexander OBE added: “This year’s Heritage Heroes nominees have once again demonstrated the incredible and forward-looking work done by heritage volunteers. Our 2021 winners have achieved truly impressive and inspirational results for the heritage they care about as well as standout support for their colleagues and their communities. By using archives to deliver real benefits for mental health, and by applying digital and filmmaking skills to broaden and deepen engagement in the heritage, our two winners show just how exciting, powerful and wide-reaching heritage volunteering can be. Heroes indeed; we are delighted to celebrate their achievements through these awards.” Steve Ash said: “It’s a real honour to receive this award. Community groups in Sheffield received over £750,000 to help them deliver vital services and support during the Covid-19 pandemic, in a new report published by South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation (SYCF). Grants of up to £5,000 were distributed to 180 community groups as the pandemic began in March 2020, with SYCF initiating a host of changes to their grants processes to make sure funds were distributed swiftly in those exceptional times. This resulted in communities across Sheffield receiving invaluable help with 168,554 people being supported through the amazing commitment of over 5,665 volunteers, with 45% of the total funding given to groups advancing people’s physical and mental health, wellbeing and safety. The SYCF Covid-19 Response Awards and the Response and Recovery Awards allowed community organisations to support people with their mental health, addressing social isolation and providing information and advice, which was particularly important in sharing public health messages.South Yorkshire’s Chief Executive Ruth E Willis, said: “As a grant giving organisation in a national emergency, we understood the need to distribute funds smoothly and allow community groups to start their activities such as delivering food parcels, picking up prescriptions, and I.T equipment for young people to continue their studies.” Activities carried out by community groups included befriending services so people self-isolating had regular contact, activity packs and outdoor activities for children, provision and delivery of food parcels and NHS workers receiving free transport to and from work. Globalmama Enterprises Ltd cooked and delivered over 3,000 meals to their Somalian and refugee community in Sheffield, helping people with their laundry and setting up WhatsApp groups to share Covid-19 guidelines. Amina Souleiman, Globalmama Enterprises Ltd secretary, said: “‘The funding we received from South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation provided us with the opportunity to provide much needed support to vulnerable members of our community at a difficult time. Many elderly, disabled and sick members of the BAME and refugee community needed help with their shopping, laundry and at least one hot meal a day, as they couldn’t go out due to shielding. The funding also enabled us to deliver activities and spread information via Zoom and WhatsApp, increasing our reach and impact significantly, and giving us valuable tools for the future.” Over 60% of our Response and Recovery grants were distributed to organisations supporting Black, Asian and other minoritised communities, to reflect the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 they experienced. SYCF’s Vital Signs 2021 report, through official data and community feedback, identified Crime and Safety, Disadvantage and Inequality, Work and the Local Economy, and Mental Health, as the four most important needs in South Yorkshire.

school run parking

South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) is teaming up with teachers across the county to try and tackle dangerous and irresponsible school-run parking. Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield schools have been offered new banners urging drivers to keep children safe by parking away from the gates and keeping the entrance clear. It is hoped that the artwork will discourage parents and carers from parking on yellow and zigzag lines or blocking pavements. Joanne Wehrle, manager of SYSRP, said: “If you park or stop on zigzags or double yellow lines outside a school, you are breaking the law and putting children’s lives at risk. It really is that simple. School entrances should be kept clear at all times – otherwise you will be reducing visibility for those crossing the road at a time when there is a lot of traffic on the road. We know it will take more than a banner outside schools to overcome this problem, but this is just one way of raising awareness about the dangers. If you have no choice but to drive to school, then please park somewhere that is legal, doesn’t affect visibility and doesn’t prevent people from using the pavement, Find out if there is a public car park available for parents to use or make a compromise by parking a few streets away and walking the final part of the journey. Everyone has a role to play when it comes to school-run safety. We hope this latest partnership with schools will remind people why it is so important.”

Tramlines Festival Opens ‘Apply To Play’ For Emerging Talent Tramlines, Sheffield’s biggest music festival, has announced the opening of this year’s ‘Apply to Play’. The scheme offers a number of paid performance slots to emerging and undiscovered bands and artists from across the UK. Those wishing to play at the 2022 edition of Tramlines can apply via the website at. https://tramlines.org.uk/ apply-to-play-now-live/ Taking place at Hillsborough Park from Friday 22nd – Sunday 24th July, Apply To Play is an annual call out. With slots available to play across a variety of stages, Tramlines Festival continues year on year to support and create opportunities for grass

root music talent. With no genre or set-up out of the question, Apply To Play is open to anyone who believes they have what it takes to entertain the music-loving crowd at Tramlines. Tramlines Operations Director Timm Cleasby said, “Discovering new artists has always been at the heart of Tramlines. Walking round the festival and hearing a new sound that just grabs you like when I first heard the angelic voices, Before Breakfast in 2019 is fantastic. It’s great to see August Charles who played through Apply To Play in 2021, booked for this year. We love championing new bands and I can’t wait to find my

new favourite artist for 2022.” Winners are selected by a panel of industry experts, tastemakers and the Tramlines team, and successful applicants will also receive a performance fee. Winners this year will join a line up including Sam Fender, Kasabian, Madness, The Wombats, James, Declan McKenna, The Vaccines, Sigrid, Becky Hill, Kelis, Alfie Templeman, Jade Bird, Self Esteem and many more. The deadline for applications is 14th April (direct link to application form, here) and the winners will be notified by 27th May. With the scheme receiving so many amazing entries,

unfortunately organisers are unable to respond to each applicant individually. Notable bands discovered via Apply To Play in past years include Blossoms who later were nominated for a Mercury Music Prize in 2017, showing what an important, careerlaunching platform this can be. More recently, 2021 Apply To Play winners included August Charles who this year has gone on to receive an official booking by Tramlines to play the T’Other Stage (Stage 2). And singer-songwriter Rumbi Tauro - also the winner of the ‘Pattern & Push’ vocalist competition endorsed and supported by Toddla T and rapper Coco - who got to

meet MOBO Award winner, Mahalia. On the experience, Rumbi said, “Being a part of Tramlines was honestly an incredible experience. I got a chance to network with other artists/bands throughout

the day, a BBC Radio Sheffield Live interview and a chance to see the logistics of what it’s like performing at a festival. Meeting Mahalia after her set was incredible. She took the time to share

some words of wisdom and encouragement that truly inspired me. I really recommend applying because opportunities like ‘Apply to Play’ can open so many doors and give you a real chance to build

relationships with industry people.” Those wishing to play at the 2022 edition of Tramlines can apply via the website at. https:// tramlines.org.uk/applyto-play-now-live/

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury confidence AN AFTERNOON TO FORGET Cambridge, and a man in form It was an afternoon to forget for the Blades at the Ricoh Arena. Sander Berge gave United an early lead but from the moment Viktor Gyokeres levelled for the home side, they dominated and ran out worthy winners, having scored three second half goals, with only the heroics of Wes Foderingham keeping the score respectable in truth. Boss Heckingbottom was forced into two changes for the clash at Coventry. Fleck (groin) and Davies (calf ) were absent, with Hourihane and Gordon recalled, as several youngsters filled the bench including Lopata and Arblaster for the first time in the league. United started positively and won an early corner after Gibbs-White saw a shot from distance deflected wide. The resulting corner came to nothing, but on 10 minutes after ClarkeSlater had denied GibbsWhite at the expense

of another corner, Egan peeled away from his marker, but under pressure he couldn’t get a strong enough connection on the ball. But on 16 minutes, the Blades bright opening way rewarded with goal. A long throw from Robinson was kept alive by Sharp and then Hourihane dinked to the back post in the second phase and BERGE rose highest in a crowded area to power a header past Moore. Frustratingly though, the lead only lasted five minutes as GYOKERES latched on to McFadzean’s punt forward and kept his composure to slot past Foderingham. The first half was an open affair, Hourihane snapped a shot wide for United, whilst Gyokeres tested Foderingham having cut inside from the left. Allen was perhaps harshly penalised for a backpass that Moore decided to pick up, from the indirect

kick-off. Then, on Tuesday 29 March, Peacock-Farrell and teammates face Hungary at Windsor Park, the game kicks off at 7.45pm. The Owls shot-stopper took his clean sheet tally to 13 following Saturday’s 6-0 victory over Cambridge at Hillsborough, the second best return in League One.

free-kick that followed Rose was brave to block Hourihane’s shot. It was Coventry that then finished the first period strongly, a swift counter from a United corner ended with Hamer been freed in on goal by Allen, but Foderingham stood big and denied him before O’Hare sent a dipping half volley over the bar after the home side had penalty appeals waved away by referee Simpson. United registered the first attempt on target in the second period, but Moore was equal to Berge effort

from distance and on 52 minutes, City hit the front. Gyokeres was denied by Foderingham, but in the ensuing scrambled, O’HARE forced the ball over the line. Rose then headed against the post from a corner, before the home side made it three, as O’HARE helped himself to his second from close-range. Hourihane was denied by Moore as McBurnie was introduced at the expense of Norwood, but after Foderingham had stopped Gyokeres making it four, Coventry made sure of the spoils

as GODDEN got in on the action with the easiest of finishes after good play by Maatsen and O’Hare. The Sky Blues weren’t content with four though and only the excellence Foderingham denied them on a number of occasions, saving from O’Hare and Hamer in quick succession. To their credit, United went until the final whistle, with Sharp being denied a consolation by Moore, but despite a lengthy spell of added time, the Blades were well beaten.

The Owls turned in the performance of the season so far on Saturday, hitting Cambridge for six at Hillsborough. Here is a selection of talking points from Darren Moore’s postmatch press conference. ON THE GAME Obviously I’m pleased, pleased with the result and pleased with the performance. We could even have had more goals with the number of chances we created but you have to be happy with 6-0. We started the game well, we set the tempo of the game and didn’t give Cambridge the chance to settle. When we attack like that we are a match for anyone. The focus was right and the concentration levels were spot-on. I was pleased to see Bailey make that save at the end because it showed the importance of the concentration levels from front to back.

produced one of their most emphatic displays of the season ON SAIDO BERAHINO to crush Cambridge He is capable of that, 6-0 at Hillsborough. An own goal followed by strikes from Barry Bannan, George Byers and Saido Berahino (3) saw the Owls return to winning ways in devastating fashion.

Saido, he has a lot in his locker and we’ve had to be patient with him and he’s had to be patient with himself. He’s been so keen to succeed and today was the reward for Saido for all the extra hours he’s put in to get himself into the best possible shape. The football in Belgium is very different to the football in England so, although he had that base level of fitness, match fitness over here is completely different. He took his goals well today and also got an assist so a wonderful afternoon for Saido, he is certainly a man in form. ON DISCIPLINE AND MOMENTUM We know what we needed to do after last week at Lincoln, when we weren’t quite ourselves. We had to bring discipline and momentum to the table today and we did that. We set the tone, the pace of the game, and when a team does that it can be difficult to defend against. It was

important to me that we kept the momentum going and we spoke about that at half time. It would be very easy to finish at 4-0, bank the points and move on. But I wanted to see that ruthlessness and to get another two goals in the second half was really pleasing. As I say, it could’ve been more with the volume of chances we created.

ON CONFIDENCE IN THE CAMP We’ve always been confident, even when some of the results have not gone our way. We know the quality of the group of players we have and what we are capable of. To beat any team in this division 6-0 is an achievement so the boys can take a lot of confidence from that performance. We play Accrington next on Tuesday, they have had a good result themselves today, so it’s important we put a line through our game and turn our attention very quickly to Accrington.

‘We have to keep UNITED WOMEN Paul Warne reflects on the believing’ OVERCOME goalless draw LIONESSES United Women came from behind with a blistering second half performance to continue their unbeaten start to 2022 with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Bramall Lane against London City Lionesses. Blades trailed to a Carly Girasoli header in the first half and had to ride out a wave of pressure from the visitors either side of the break as Fran Kitching produced three superb saves, one from the penalty spot, to help keep the game alive. After that, an equaliser from Courtney Sweetman-Kirk and an absolute stunner from Lucy Watson turned the game on its head and the Blades battled out the final moments to record a big win. Redfearn named an unchanged eleven for the third game in succession and the Blades had a chance inside 20 seconds when Sweetman-Kirk fired over when played through on goal. The in-form striker was lively from the off and forced Shea Yanez into a good save soon after. The visitors though took the lead just inside 20 minutes when a corner looped up in the air and was headed home at the back post by Girasoli. United responded and went agonisingly close when Rhema Lord-Mears curled a shot from distance onto the crossbar, before a foul by Ellie Wilson gave the Lionesses a chance to double their lead from the penalty spot, only to be denied by a big save from Kitching. Redfearn shifted to a 3-5-2 in the second half but the visitors remained on top, Kitching making two stunning saves while there were some huge tackles from the United centre-backs Georgia Robert, Sophie Bradley-Auckland and Ellie Wilson, and a sensational slide tackle from makeshift wing back Georgia Walters to deny Brooke Nunn a clear run at goal. Just moments after Kitching’s latest big save, Blades were level. Alethea Paul made a superb burst into the box and her low cross was converted by SweetmanKirk for her 10th league goal of the season. That swung things in the Blades’ favour and the winner came just 13 minutes later, a sensational effort from range from Watson which went in off the crossbar and left Yanez with no chance. United had to ride out some late Lionesses pressure and it was heart in mouth time when a looping header dropped onto the roof of the net in the 95th minute, but Blades held on for a memorable win at the Lane.

at Adams Park

“I thought in the first half we were good. We created really good chances and it’s always the case, if you don’t take your chances you may not get any more, and we didn’t create enough in the second half to win it, but if you’d offered me a point beforehand, and a clean sheet, would I have took it, yes, possibly, but I would have liked us to have played better, obviously. “Considering we did not get back till late Thursday morning, the lads put a real shift in and I’m really proud of them. That one point might be the one point we need. We try and win every game and try and be as aggressive as we could, but it wasn’t to be. The performance was not amazing but I’m not disappointed with how we played. “Winning football matches is really hard. I could have picked a different team but I picked a team which I thought was fresh. We changed the system as we were getting done a little bit down the sides. It was always going to be a tough game coming here. We have clashed horns a few times. I’m pleased with a point. “We have not lost any ground. It’s a good point and we’ve got two home games. If we get back-to-back wins, you put yourself in a really good position.”

Gary McSheffrey has called on his players to react in the right manner after Rovers were handed another lifeline in the battle at the foot of Sky Bet League One. Rovers suffered a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Gillingham, who started the game a point ahead in the standings. Despite the defeat, they remain four points from safety. While thoroughly disappointed with the performance against the Gills, McSheffrey says the reaction of his players over the coming week is the most important factor at this stage. On how the game played out: “It’s not great giving a throw-in away after ten seconds when it’s probably their biggest weapon. And then we don’t defend the throw-in, people get caught under it when we’ve got to make the first contact with it and you can’t let it bounce in the six yard box. “They get their noses in front in the first minute. “We had a lot of the ball. They let you play out and they just want to defend their box. “Their game management is old school and they’re quite shrewd in how they see the game out. “We played some nice stuff in the second half but we didn’t have that cutting edge. “In the final bit, we huffed and puffed a bit, had some good efforts and their keeper made some decent saves. “But we lacked the desire to keep putting the ball in behind them and get balls into the box. “There was too much patience out on the pitch rather than keep putting them under pressure.” On his message to the fans: “We need them to keep backing us and keep believing in us like they have been doing. “They’ve been superb. “We’ll keep turning up to every game and trying to win games of football.”
