council publishes new plan for future A new plan for the future of Sheffield city centre will see a host of new bars, restaurants, shops, and thousands of new homes springing up from the Moor to Castlegate over the coming years, following consultation with residents and businesses. As part of the consultation, the Council asked people to share their views on options for the future of the former John Lewis site, Fargate, High Street and Castlegate. The feedback on Castlegate and Fargate showed strong support for the proposals and work has started on

implementing the schemes. The consultation on the John Lewis site demonstrated a clear preference for replacing the current building with a smaller building and outdoor space. Following the consultation feedback, they will now start to explore options for the future of the site, including welcoming proposals and interest from potential developers to redevelop, replace or reuse the building. The removal works will begin in May and are expected to be completed by the end of the year. The Vision will build on

work already taking place across the city centre, including the £470m Heart of the City scheme, which has introduced Marmaduke’s, Monki, Weekday and The Furnace to Sheffield, to name a few. Changes to the city centre landscape are evident everywhere, from Leah’s Yard on Cambridge Street, which is set to open in early 2023, to the construction of a Radisson Blu hotel on Pinstone Street. Millions of pounds of investment have also been secured to rejuvenate Fargate, High Street and Castlegate. Event Central, a six-storey flagship building on Fargate

funded by the Future High Streets Fund, will combine an event space with opportunities for people to meet and work. The area will be made more attractive, with a new focus on outdoor seating, building on the budding pavement café culture that has become popular in other parts of the city centre, such as Division Street. Castlegate is to receive £20m of funding from the Levelling Up Fund to restore its reputation as Sheffield’s ancient hub and will see the River Sheaf de-culverted to provide a new focal point in the area,

with new greenery and public spaces making it an attractive place to visit. The fund will also help create two new arts destinations in the city centre in a boost to Sheffield’s creative scene: Park Hill Art Space and Harmony Works. Improving walking, cycling and public transport routes is key to addressing the climate emergency Sheffield is facing, and is one of the ways in which the city centre will be a blueprint for future growth, with sustainability underpinning all aspects of the City Centre Vision.

SHEFFIELD ARTIST LAUNCHES NEW BOOK IN AID OF TEENAGE CANCER TRUST As Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall returns after three years away to celebrate its 20th event, celebrated Sheffield artist Pete McKee and Teenage Cancer Trust have co-produced a Song Book featuring 19 songs performed on stage for the charity over the past 20 years. The handwritten lyric contributions come from

an all-star lineup of artists who have performed at the event and each song will also be accompanied by an interpretative design produced by McKee, forming an exclusive collection of McKee artworks not available elsewhere. The book was released this week via www.petemckee. com and will retail at £25, with all profits going to

support Teenage Cancer Trust. In addition to contributions from Paul Weller, The Cure, Noel Gallagher and Blossoms among many others, the song book also features lyrics from cancer survivor, and singer of Ishmael Ensemble, Holly Wellington, who was helped by Teenage Cancer Trust. Her song ‘Empty Hands’ was written about her cancer experience and Wellington also wrote the foreword to the book. Teenage Cancer Trust’s iconic concert series has featured the greatest music and comedy for two decades, raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust and driven by Teenage Cancer Trust Honorary Patron and The Who icon, Roger Daltrey. But in 2020, just as the concerts were

about to celebrate 20 years of legendary moments, COVID-19 shut them down, with lockdown starting on the day of the first scheduled show. 2021 went the same way, so it is a more than welcome return for this vital charity event, which will run from March 21-27th. This year will feature Don Broco on Monday 21st March, followed by An Evening of Comedy hosted by Joel Dommett with special guests Tom Allen, Rob Beckett, Rosie Jones, Romesh Ranganathan, Suzi Ruffell and Seann Walsh on Tuesday March 22nd. Irrepressible star YUNGBLUD performs on Wednesday 23rd March, legends Madness on Thursday 24th March, then the return of The Who, playing a very special acoustic show on Friday

March 25th. The iconic Liam Gallagher will play Saturday 26th March, with global superstar Ed Sheeran on Sunday 27th March to round off an incredible week. The lost shows of the last two years meant Teenage Cancer Trust missed out on around £2 million in vital funds to support young people when they needed help most. Young people facing cancer have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic over the last two years – from damaging delays in diagnosis to increased strains on young people’s mental health and resilience, making it even harder to get their lives, education or early career back on track after treatment. Specialist care and support delivered by Teenage Cancer Trust’s unstoppable nurses and

youth support teams has been a lifeline to young people throughout the pandemic. Young people with cancer have never needed that support more, which is why getting back on stage at the Royal Albert Hall plays such a vital part in making sure no young person faces cancer alone. Eligible young people previously cared for at Teenage Cancer Trust hospital units around the country will visit the Royal Albert Hall throughout the week of concerts, and enjoy all the action from VIP seating. Pete McKee’s songbook, co-produced with Teenage Cancer Trust, is available now at www.petemckee. com

“spot early warning signs” urges charity behave responsibly

CHARITY MENINGITIS NOW are urging university students across the UK to take a few minutes to learn the signs and symptoms of the disease – as cases rise to pre-Covid pandemic levels. Every university in the UK could experience at least one case of meningitis amongst its students this term, the charity is warning. If students fall ill, the temptation might be for them to think they have Covid-19 or a hangover, but it could be something else, including meningitis. Meningitis is a medical emergency, so it’s vital to recognise the signs and symptoms, act fast and seek medical assistance. Charity chief executive Dr Tom Nutt said: “We know there are cases happening across the country – we heard of another one at a UK university just last week – and every case is one case too many. So today, we’re asking university students to keep meningitis in mind, learn the signs and symptoms and to look out for themselves and their friends.” Tom added: “The early signs and symptoms of meningitis can be similar to flu and include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and muscle pain. More specific signs and symptoms include fever with cold hands and feet, drowsiness, confusion, pale blotchy skin, stiff neck, dislike of bright lights and a rash which doesn’t fade under pressure. The rash can be a late sign though and may not appear, so our advice is not to wait for a rash.” If meningitis is suspected seek urgent medical help by contacting your GP or calling 111. During the pandemic, lockdowns used to curb the spread of Covid-19 also led to a decline in other infectious

diseases. Meningitis rates were at a historic low until September last year. Since then, however, there has been an increase in MenB cases among adolescents and young adults in England, ‘particularly in university students’. Of the Invasive Meningococcal Disease (IMD) cases confirmed among the 15 to 19 and 20 to 24-year-old age groups in September to November 2021, 84.6% (22/26) were students registered at a further or higher education institution. Dr Nutt added: “We always feared there might be a rebound against the historically low figures for meningococcal infection we have been seeing during the pandemic, whilst hoping there would not be. We are already working hard to spread awareness messages within universities. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself against meningitis. But, with teenagers and young people being far more likely to carry the bacteria that can cause meningococcal disease and as most students will not have been vaccinated against MenB, it is vital they remain extra vigilant, know what to look for and seek urgent medical advice if they or one of their friends becomes ill.” Meningitis Now has free information for parents and young people and lifesaving Signs and Symptoms cards. Find out more at www.MeningitisNow.org Anyone affected or with any questions and concerns can contact the Meningitis Now Helpline on 0808 80 10 388 or email helpline@meningitisnow.org.

Sheffield Street No more Trees Inquiry library book fines in Sheffield Library fines have been scrapped in Sheffield. Any books you take out or return from now on won’t incur fines. Councillor Alison Teale, Executive Member for Sustainable Neighbourhoods, Wellbeing, Parks and Leisure, said: “From now on we will not be charging anyone for returning their books late. We’ve never charged children, and the good news is, this now applies to all adults too. If you have any overdue library books from before the pandemic, and you’re worried about paying the fines, just return them to your library. You won’t need to pay a fine. “We are encouraging you to return any library materials you borrow on time or to renew them so that other people in Sheffield can enjoy them too. “We’ve been helping local people connect with culture, learning, and each other since 1856 in our libraries and we look forward to seeing you soon. Enjoy your reading with us and love your local library.”

The Chair of the Independent Inquiry into the Street Trees Dispute, Sir Mark Lowcock, has now published the Terms of Reference for the Inquiry. Councillor Julie Grocutt, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Community Engagement and Governance said, “The publishing of the terms of reference for the Independent Inquiry into the Street Tree Dispute marks a significant milestone for this inquiry. It’s great to see that the inquiry is making considerable progress and making it quickly. “The terms of reference set out by Sir Mark today seeks to address important issues such as the context of Sheffield’s highways, pavements and street trees, the implementation of the Streets Ahead contract and how stakeholders responded throughout that period, which will allow us to understand what happened and why. It highlights that this process will be one of truth finding and reconciliation for our city. “Sir Mark has engaged key stakeholders and parties during the process of setting the Terms of Reference and anyone who wishes to submit evidence to the inquiry will have the opportunity to do so.” More information and updates on the Inquiry is available at www.sheffield.gov.uk

We all know that wildlife is in trouble, but you may not know that simply by keeping our dogs on a lead at this critical time of year we can help protect endangered species. Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust are thrilled that so many people are re-connecting with nature across the region, including at nature reserves such as Blacka Moor, Wyming Brook and Kilnhurst Ings. Whilst the Trust welcomes responsible visitors, they are also raising awareness that the pressure of increasing numbers can be devastating for some of our most iconic and critically endangered birds. Ground-nesting birds like curlew, wood warbler, skylarks and lapwings are very vulnerable to disturbance. Their nests are so well camouflaged they can easily be accidentally destroyed, while the added stress of a dog running across the landscape can seriously disrupt adults trying to feed their chicks. In 2020 the increase in disturbance caused by visitors and their dogs meant that no lapwing, oystercatcher, ringed plover, little ringed plover or sandpiper successfully raised any chicks at Redmires, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and part of the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership. These birds are all in decline, and some are critically endangered, so this disastrous blow can’t be allowed to occur again. The trust want people to enjoy all our nature reserves and local green spaces, but in order to protect the wildlife which calls it home they need everyone to behave responsibly and lawfully. Keeping your dog on a short lead and staying on the paths helps deliver the best of both worlds – access to nature while protecting vulnerable wildlife. In fact, it’s a legal requirement to keep a dog on a lead of no more than two metres on open access land between 1 March and 31 July. Keeping dogs on a lead also helps protect grazing livestock on the Trust’s nature reserves. The Trust asks people and their pets to stay as far away from livestock as possible while walking at this time of year to avoid disturbing them – but if cattle do get startled and run towards you, let your dog off the lead for your own safety. “Accessing nature is important and we love to see people and their pets enjoying nature reserves and green spaces,” says Marta Alfaro Tirado, Nature Recovery Manager (South) at Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust, “we are just asking people to do so in a responsible way which protects vulnerable wildlife now and for future generations. It is tempting to let dogs off their leads in open spaces, but the cost to endangered species can be huge. Please always follow the Countryside Code whilst enjoying your visits.” You can find more guidance at wildsheffield.com/ countrysidecode

Hallam Students aim to raise another £30,000 for Sheffield Charities Events Management students have successfully raised over £350,000 for Sheffield Charities over the last several years and aim to do it all again in 2022, though a series of charity fundraising events across Sheffield. The ambitious students’ events include a charity abseil, a dog festival, tequila tasting, a Peaky Blinders murder mystery, disco themed bingo, a charity boxing match and many more. Students on the Events Management, Arts and Entertainment and Experiential Marketing courses aim to raise valuable funds for Cavendish Cancer Care, Support Dogs and Food Works. The students have undertaken a range of challenges to fund the production costs of their events, including shaving their heads,

dressing up in superhero costumes, baking exquisite treats, sporting challenges and finding generous sponsors. They create marketing campaigns for their events and engage local business as venues, suppliers and sponsors, all with the aim of raising as much as they can for this year’s charities. The events kick (ed) off on Friday 18th March with El Tropicano, a tropical themed club night at Signal in the City Centre and conclude on April 30th with the Paws with a Cause Dog Festival at Hillsborough Arena. The events are the grand finale of the students’ degrees and culminate 3 years of study and work experience, transforming everything they have learned about staging events into reality. This is made possible through

their final year SBS Live! event management modules, which challenge students to plan and deliver an event of their choice, with all profits being donated to their chosen organisation. Jane Tattersall who leads one of the modules said “It really is the icing on the cake for the students and staff, we are consistently impressed by the calibre of the events and the amount of money they raise, they are amazing! We couldn’t do it without the support and generosity of Sheffield’s businesses who offer generous discounts and support to our students and Sheffield’s people, who buy tickets, donate generously and have a brilliant time.” Tickets and information for all the events are at hallamcharityevents.org.uk

LOCAL PEOPLE SET TO BENEFIT FROM FREE RECORDING SESSIONS FOR A LIMITED PERIOD IN DONCASTER A world class recording and rehearsal studio in Doncaster is making its services free of charge to local artists, schools and community members for a limited period, thanks to funding from South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. Supanova Studios, based in Armthorpe, Doncaster, has been awarded £35,000 under the Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) which in total provided £1m funding for arts & culture organisations and freelancers across South Yorkshire. The studio, run by Creative Director Jason Burns, is now able to offer free access to a wide range of its services

including audio recording, band rehearsal rooms, as well as support with production techniques. It also includes access to talented music teachers available in its Drum & Guitar school and singing tuition and taster sessions. Supanova Studios boasts the largest live recording room in South Yorkshire, three fully equipped rehearsal studios and a world class vocal booth, plus a fully mirrored dance studio. “We applied for the arts & culture funding as we have seen how badly hit local musicians and artists have been in this area by the pandemic,” explains Jason Burns, Creative Director at Supanova Studios. “We also had

to close our doors for several months due to lockdown restrictions and it was an extremely difficult time. Local artists, musicians and dancers are working hard to build their businesses back and we wanted to be able to support them and the community through our studio.” He adds: ”Anyone interested should visit our website and book online or call us now!” Supanova Studios has been used by big names in the music industry such as YungBlud and Bang Bang Romeo, as well as in recordings for TV shows including Digging for Britain and Walking Victorian Britain. Supanova Studios offers world class recording, mixing, editing and

mastering services, as well as Popstar parties for children, hen parties and any other groups. Doncaster received £450k from South Yorkshire MCA’s ARG fund, for which local organisations and freelancers applied to Doncaster Council. The funding has been allocated to a wide range of activities providing experiences for young

FRIENDSHIP FESTIVAL COME TO CROOKES The Sheffield Festival of Friendship with Palestine and Sheffield’s JuJu Club have come together to put on a fundraising event in Crookes Social Club on Saturday 2nd April. The event features the very danceable Free Radicals Band, together with support acts: Janet Wood (singer), Angelina Abel (poet) DJs Aejaz Zee (the DisOrientalist)

& Gee Shakti, together with a Palestinian Street Market and a snacks bar. The event runs from 7.30 pm to midnight and the entry charge is ‘pay what you feel’. All proceeds will go to help fund the first Sheffield Festival of Friendship with Palestine, taking place later in the year from June 13thth – July 10th. The festival (‘Palfest Sheffield’ for short) aims to celebrate and share the joy and creativity of Palestinian culture, particularly dance, and show our city’s warmth to Palestinians living in our city and across the world.

WAKE TO BE HELD IN MEMORY OF POPULAR CLUB MEMBER The La Plata Social Club will be holding a wake for the late Mark Damms who passed away suddenly 2 years ago, unfortunately due to Covid restrictions at the time it wasn’t possible to hold a fitting tribute. Mark was a popular member of the committee and an avid Sheffield Wednesday supporter. There will be entertainment by Liam Alexander and the event takes place Monday 28th March in the evening.

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury block, breaking through derby joy for blades Low and making changes The Blades moved up to fourth in the Sky Bet Championship with a hard fought success over Barnsley in the Bramall Lane sunshine on Saturday lunchtime. Sander Berge opened the scoring early in the second half, before Morgan Gibbs-White made sure of the three points by adding a second. United made one change for the early kick-off against the Tykes at Bramall Lane, as Hourihane was recalled as Ndiaye dropped to the bench where he was joined by the likes of Stevens, Fleck and McBurnie. With the Lane baked in glorious sunshine, it was Barnsley who arguably enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges. Morris glanced a header straight at Foderingham from a Bassi cross from the left, before the Blades stopper was the fully extended to deny Wolfe after Helik rose

highest to head into his path following a spell of pressure from the visitors. The half hour was in sight when United had their first meaningful effort on goal. Norwood seized the ball on the edge of the area and invited Robinson to take aim on the angle, the defender obliged but his powerfully struck effort flew wide of the far post with Collins worried. The from a Norwood freekick, Gibbs-White got across his marker, but his header was comfortable for Barnsley stopper. As half-time approached, both sides had good chances. Barnsley broke via the left, but Wolfe could only shoot into the side-netting following a poor first touch from Bassi’s pass. At the other end, a throwing broke for Berge who freed Osborn down the right but having cut inside a retreating Vita he curled an effort over the bar. Barnsley started the

second period the better, but it was United who hit the front on 54 minutes as BERGE got the final touch at the back post from Hourihane’s inch perfect delivery following Norwood’s quickly taken free-kick. Skipper Sharp limped off ten minutes later and was replaced by Jebbison. With 20 minutes remaining, Norwood freed GibbsWhite down the right channel, but under pressure at the back post, Osborn couldn’t hit the target, as Brittan was then cautioned having halted the progress of McBurnie

Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom has delivered his verdict over the rumours defender Andre Wisdom may possibly looked at as a solution to their ongoing injury crisis. The Blades have suffered multiple setbacks in recent weeks, with a

whole host of options facing lengthy spells on the sidelines. With only two fit senior defenders to boast at the moment in John Egan and Jack Robinson, 19-year-old Ky Gordon has been also drafted in from the club’s academy. January loan signing Charlie

Goode is out along with experienced head Chris Basham, with Jayden Bogle also ruled out until the end of the season. Wisdom, now 28, who last spent time with Derby County last year has been training with the club, with Heckingbottom perhaps suggesting the club may

who had replaced Berge. GIBBS-WHITE had a header tipped over from a Robinson dink, but on 76 minutes he made no mistake to add a second having rounded Collins with McBurnie claiming the assist. Jebbison produced an encouraging cameo appearance off the bench, but scooped over as the clock ticked down, before GibbsWhite received a standing ovation as Fleck returned to the fray. Morris headed over for the Tykes, but the game was up and four added minutes passed without incident.

The Owls played out a goalless draw at Gillingham on Saturday and here are some talking points from Darren Moore’s postmatch press conference.

ON THE GAME We dominated long periods of the game but Gillingham played a low block that made it difficult. I would never condemn any team for playing like that because they are fighting for their lives. We’ve scored 30 goals in 13 games so they were never going to play open and free flowing football against us. They played five across the back with four right in front so it was never going to be easy.

more. They hit us a couple of times on the counter but Bailey didn’t have a great deal to do. We didn’t work their keeper enough either and that was the disappointing thing for me today because of the amount of possession we had. The onus was on us to win the game and we got into them at half time. We needed more impetus and although we showed that, it wasn’t enough to win the game. ON CHANGES Dominic Iorfa felt a little

soreness after being out for so long and I thought Chey could come in and cope with their aerial threat. He won everything in the air today. We also had Harlee back on the bench and it was important to bring him on so he could get some minutes. Same for Mendez, the minutes are vital on the pitch to build on the training ground work. The treatment room is clearing and that can only be a good thing. We will have Josh back next week too assuming there

is no reaction in training next week.

ON THE FANS I always talk to the people at the club and see how many tickets we have sold and to see 3,500 down here today was superb. The sun was shining and the disappointing thing for me was that we haven’t sent them home smiling with three points. But it’s another point, it’s a clean sheet and we have a full week on the training ground to prepare for the game with Cheltenham at Hillsborough on Saturday.

ON BREAKING THROUGH It’s what we lacked today, that ability to find something to break them down and break through. If we had scored I think it might have brought Gillingham out a little

have to look elsewhere for cover heading into the business end of the 2021/22 campaign. United have eight games left to go with five of those to be played at Bramall Lane. “It’s been fantastic for him but at the minute he’s the only one. We’ve got Egan and Robbo and that’s it.

So we are serious about bringing someone in but Andre is not at the level yet for us to bring him in and use him. We’ll be looking at other things if they are there. If not, we will work hard with the players and these two weeks will help us get a couple back.” United are seen as one of the in-form sides in the division at present, having only lost two of their last 10 games in all competitions, giving them a very real chance of finishing in the play-off places after a slow start to the campaign.

for Cheltenham

Josh Windass is in contention to return to the field on Saturday as Wednesday host Cheltenham. The forward hasn’t featured for the Owls since picking up an injury in our 2-0 win over Morecambe in February. But the 28-year-old has made good progress behind the scenes and is back training with the squad. Manager Darren Moore was asked about the availability of Windass following our 0-0 draw with Gillingham. “Yes, he’ll be fine for

Cheltenham,” he said. “As long as we don’t get any reaction from him in training he’ll be back next week.” It’s more positive news on the injury front for the Owls, with the likes of Chey Dunkley, Dominic Iorfa and Lee Gregory all

back in the fold. The gaffer continued: “We saw Chey come back this week, Dominic Iorfa last week, obviously Lee Gregory has had 90 minutes on Saturday and Josh Windass comes back next week - and possibly Mide (Shodipo).”

Jordy Hiwula believes Rovers’ workrate at Fleetwood Town was the key to emerging with a point that kept their survival hopes alive. Rovers battled out a goalless draw to remain four points from safety in Sky Bet League One. Hiwula made his first start since the reverse fixture in early January, since when he has suffered injury issues. Hiwula on the pattern of the game: “I thought the boys dug in deep. There were spells in the game where they had to dig in and work hard and I thought they did that. “It’s a really tough place to come and the wind didn’t help as well. “But the boys worked their socks off and we got the point. “We created a good few chances in the first half and we felt like we could have capitalised on that in the second half but it just wasn’t to be.” On the shout for a penalty in the first half: “The keeper rolled it out and I felt like I could get there before him. “I managed to nick it and I felt like he clipped me before he got it. “The referee said he got the ball first but I haven’t seen it back.” On decision making in the final third: “I felt like that was a factor. “When I went through I could have slipped Josh [Martin] in. “It’s one of those things. We just need to keep going and keep learning. Hopefully one will come off. “I felt like I had more than enough chances to score. For me, if I haven’t got many chances, I just have to try to put the ball in the back of the net.” On the message to the players after the game: “It was that we’ve worked hard but we needed to be more clinical in the final third, especially in the first half. We just need to take that into the next game. “We really believe we can get out of this. At one point we were 11 or 12 points off and we’ve closed the gap massively. “There’s seven games to go so we just need to give our all for the next seven games.” On his return to the side: “I’ve just come back in and I’m feeling fit and fresh. “I just need to keep working hard and try to stay in the team. If I get the opportunities, I need to stick the ball in the back of the net. “It’s been difficult, being out for two months, but I’ve been going to all the games and supporting the lads. “I feel like they’ve done well in a lot of games. “Any players out injured or not in the squad, we’re all trying to support each other.”

McSheffrey takes positive Gary McSheffrey felt Rovers were let down by poor decision making in the final third as they battled out a goalless draw at Fleetwood Town. McSheffrey took the point as a positive as it drew Rovers closer to some of their rivals for survival in Sky Bet League One. But he believed Rovers had enough promising play in the first half in particular to have secured a win at Highbury. McSheffrey on how the game played out: “I think with the way that we played in the first half we should have gone in ahead. “We had opportunities, a few good efforts and it was more good entries into the final third where we didn’t quite make the right decisions. “It was fine margins really. We played well in the first half and the game got a bit scrappy in the second. “They made a couple of subs, brought some experience onto the pitch and went about things in a different way. “As the game went on, we started giving away more fouls, the wind got up and it was important we didn’t lose. “We’ve kept a clean sheet, which is a positive from the game. “We wanted to win, but if you can’t win then you make sure you don’t lose. “It’s gained us a point on a couple of teams and if you can back that up with a win, it could turn out to be a good point.” On a show of character: “It wasn’t an easy day here. “The atmosphere before the game, the rallying cry from the chairman, all their injured boys being on the dugout - it felt like we were coming in to a bit of a cauldron. “I think the lads stood up and showed some resilience. “We just lacked that cutting edge and that final quality with our decision making.”

It’s a setback, but the lads have bounced back before Warne

Millers boss Paul Warne reflected on a tough afternoon against Shrewsbury Town at AESSEAL New York Stadium... “It wasn’t great, obviously. “I take responsibility but I thought the game was pretty even in the first half. “We weren’t at our scintillating best, but we were against a very good Shrewsbury side. “We knew they were going to be tough and they’re one of the in-form sides in the league. “I just thought going in 1-0 down at half time was a bit harsh on our lads. “The sending off was a crucial part. I’m obviously biased but I thought it was a bit harsh. I thought Angus led with his arm and didn’t actively elbow the lad. “That was a big turning point for us and I thought we had a good shout for a penalty on JJ turned down as well. “Then it was about trying to get some fresh legs on and stay in the game as long as you can. “We tried to stay in it until about 65/70 minutes and make another sub with Mickel [Miller] thinking maybe we could get a goal and get ourselves back into it. We did have a bit of a push then, but we got done on the counter-attack. “It was a bad day at the office. We’re going to lose football games, but it’s a setback.”
