PLEA FOR SOUTH YORKS DONORS TO GIVE BLOOD Existing blood donors in Sheffield are being urged to fill empty appointments at the city’s donor centre over Easter to help keep blood stocks stable. Blood stocks are more likely to drop around public holidays like Easter when people go on holiday or enjoy days out with the family and don’t donate. Right now there is a particular need for donors with O positive and O negative and B negative blood types, though all types remain in demand. Blood is needed to treat patients with cancer, blood
disorders and those suffering medical trauma or undergoing surgery. Each donation can save or improve up to three lives. Existing donors who are eligible to donate are being urged to make and keep an appointment at Sheffield donor centre where there are plenty of spare appointments. Currently three in ten appointments over the next two weeks are available to book. Peter Baughan, Head of North Region at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “We currently have enough blood to meet demand but stocks are vulnerable. As we enter
the Easter period it is vital that we continue to collect enough blood. “We need our amazing donors in Sheffield who are fit and healthy – especially those with O blood groups and B negative - to make and keep an appointment for the next few weeks or reschedule with good notice. “If you used to donate blood but haven’t done so in a while, please come back if you can – our fantastic team at Sheffield Donor Centre will be delighted to welcome you. Every appointment counts this Easter.” NHS Blood and Transplant
currently has enough blood and services to hospitals remain as normal, but stocks are currently one day below the usual six day target. Donor and staff absences – mostly due to seasonal illnesses and Covid-19 – are putting pressure on its ability to maintain consistent stocks. Existing donors and those who have donated in the past are more likely to be able to donate successfully and their blood types are known, so during stock builds they are key to ensuring the right volume and mix of blood and blood products. For those who have already
made an appointment there is a plea to help ensure as many donations go ahead as possible by keeping to the appointment or giving as much notice as possible ideally seven days - if there is a need to reschedule so the slot can be offered to another donor. Sheffield has a permanent blood donor centre at Cathedral Court, Church Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S1 2GN. Book appointments and check the latest guidance on covid-19 and giving blood by visiting www.blood.co.uk, calling 0300 123 23 23 or downloading the NHS Give Blood app.

SNODGRASS I’ve just accidentally sent a naked photo of myself to everyone in my address book! Not only is it embarrassing, it’s cost me a fortune in stamps! My wife got mad at me for kicking the dropped ice cubes under the refrigerator. But now it’s all water under the fridge. My wife is threatening to leave me because of my obsession with wearing different clothes every half an hour. I said, “Wait, I can change.” I met a girl the other night at a club who said she’d show me a good time. When we got outside she ran a 40-metre dash in just 4.5 seconds. As I put my car in reverse, I thought to myself... “This takes me back.” Did you know a school of piranha can devour a child in 30 seconds? Anyway, today I lost my job at the aquarium. Job interviewer: “At the start you’ll be earning £20,000; later that will increase to £40,000. Me: “OK, I’ll come back later.”

USEFUL NUMBERS
News, Information and Advice
1.1 million motorists suffer tyre problems shiny sheff remembered A reported 16.5 million drivers have lost control on the road due to issues with their tyres. Drivers with worn tyres are the most vulnerable in cold and wet weather, with 7.6 million drivers finding it hard to gain traction on icy or snowy roads, 4.7 million losing grip on wet roads and 3.5 million aquaplaning. However, drivers still face hazardous situations on the road regardless of the weather, as nearly six million have had a burst tyre while driving. Despite the increased likelihood of serious incidents due to tyre issues, almost one in five motorists do not know how to check the tread depth, and a further 11 per cent do not know how to check the pressure of their tyres. Data2 from Green Flag shows one in six callouts across the country are for tyre or wheel related issues, which is not surprising given only 37 per cent of drivers say they know how to change a tyre.
One in five motorists admit to only having their tyres checked at their car’s MOT or service, with only a third checking their tyre pressure regularly (once a month or more). Young people are least likely to keep an eye on their tyres, with less than a quarter of 18–34-yearolds frequently checking tyres. If the tyre pressure warning light came on, only one in three drivers would drive to a service station and use the tyre inflator. Nearly a quarter admitted they would continue their journey and only once they arrive at their destination would they check or ask their friend or family to help them. Mark Newberry, Commercial Director at Green Flag, commented: “Tyre safety is hugely important, so it’s concerning to see how many drivers neglect this vital part of their vehicle. Tyres left in a poor condition can lead to drivers gaining penalty points and an increase in the chances of a road
incident. Follow these steps to ensure they’re driving with safe and roadworthy tyres: • Tyre pressure – Tyres should be correctly inflated according to the vehicle handbook and should be checked at least once a month. With most fuel garages now charging for the use of a tyre pressure gauge, it can be easier to purchase your own device to adjust at your own convenience. It is best to check the tyre pressure when they are cold, before embarking on a journey. • Heavier load – If you’re heading on a journey where you will be taking more people or carrying more luggage than usual, it’s important to adjust your tyre pressure accordingly. Check your vehicle handbook to find what the pressure should be adjusted to. • Tyre depth – Though the legal minimum is 1.6mm, many experts recommend a minimum tread depth of 3mm. Tyres have their own
built-in tread wear indicators, but this can also be checked by using a 20 pence coin; if the outer band on the coin is visible when placing the coin in the groove between the treads, it means they’ve worn too low, and the tyres need replacing. • Irregular wear Check for any bulges, cracks, tears, or cuts, along with any objects that could be lodged in the tyre tread. It is also important to check wheel rims as they can also cause tyre damage. • Check your spare Though you normally aren’t counting on using it, it is crucial to thoroughly check your spare tyre (if you have one). • Have a regular service on your vehicle to ensure your car is in top condition for driving and ultimately prolonging the car’s overall life span. • Make sure you have a breakdown policy to ensure you’re covered in the event of a breakdown.
seven ways to save on your wedding! The cost of living crisis is worsening by the day and with an average UK wedding costing upto £35,000, it’s no wonder brides-to-be are looking for tips and tricks to cut the cost. But just how can engaged couples save on the cost of their big day without skimping on the quality of the wedding they want? Lisa Forde, wedding expert and founder of stationery favourites Tree of Hearts, has listed seven of her top tips to consider when planning: 1. Set your budget, and stick to it! Look at what you can afford and set your budget, once you have your budget set, be really strict with yourselves and stick to it. That way you’ll soon start to realise what’s important to you and your partner and it will help narrow down what you’re happy to pay for.
2. Consider an ‘off peak’ season wedding. Weddings in July, August or December can cost thousands of pounds more just because it’s peak season yet September and October often have some of the most beautiful weather of the year. Have a think about when you want your wedding - some venues may even have offers for less popular times of year. 3. In a similar fashion, consider a week day nuptials. Weddings on the weekend can cost thousands of pounds more than a week day, too. And while it’s often thought it helps guests by having a wedding on a Saturday because they don’t have to book time off work, at the end of the day, it’s your wedding - do what’s right for you and your partner. 4. Consider your guest list carefully.

Micro weddings were introduced during the pandemic and we’re noticing more and more couples deciding to downsize their wedding guest list. Do you need to invite family you haven’t seen in 10 years just because it’s etiquette, or your friends’ partners who you’ve never met? 5. Sign up to your favourite suppliers’ email mailing lists. Make sure you sign up to any of your favourite suppliers mailing lists to be first to hear of any offers or samples 6. Utilise samples Always check if a supplier offers free samples - and try before you buy!
7. Seek out new, up and coming suppliers. Whether a up and coming wedding band or a photography student with beams of enthusiasm, you don’t need to spend thousands on some suppliers. Just make sure you check out their portfolio before booking to check it’s in your style and taste. Lisa added: “But most importantly don’t forget to remember why you’re getting married in the first place. It’s a celebration of you and the person you love deciding to commit to one another. You don’t need to spend tens of thousands of pounds in order to do that.”

As National remembrance takes place across the country, Sheffield will come together on Sunday 1 May to mark the 40th Anniversary of HMS Sheffield with a commemorative service and parade. Forty years ago, on 4 May 1982 HMS Sheffield, the Royal Navy warship named after our city, was struck by an Argentine missile, and later sunk on 10 May, during the Falklands war. Of the 268 crew many were taken to safety but 20 were killed and more injured. The ship was the first British warship to be lost in 37 years, and the first of four lost during the Falklands conflict. The shipwreck is a protected war grave. People in Sheffield are invited to join in remembrance at the Cenotaph in Barker’s Pool where Sheffield Sea Cadets will take part in a parade at 9.30am. The Lord Lieutenant and Lord Mayor of Sheffield will be taking the salute accompanied by other senior dignitaries. A wreath laying and short ceremony will then take place at the HMS Memorial at Sheffield Cathedral. Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr Gail Smith, said: “We invite all of Sheffield to join as we commemorate the 40th Anniversary of this significant event in our City’s and our Country’s history. As well as losing our prestigious warship, many lives were lost during the conflict in the Falklands and we mustn’t forget the sacrifices made by those
who fought, and all those who still do today, to protect our freedom. It is an honour for me to take the salute on behalf of Sheffield, on this very important day of remembrance.” As well as the parade and service in Sheffield a new memorial is being unveiled at the National Memorial Arboretum on Wednesday 4 May. The HMS Sheffield Association Committee commissioned the memorial to celebrate the service of those who served in the 3 ships (Cruiser, Destroyer and Frigate) that bore the name of HMS Sheffield. It is also intended that the memorial acts as a place of remembrance for the 20 members of the Ship’s Company lost in action whilst serving on the Destroyer in 1982 during the Falklands Conflict. The memorial, which is made of Sheffield stainless steel is engraved with the following words: ‘Shiny Sheff’ For all who served in the three HMS SHEFFIELD ships Cruiser 1937-67, Destroyer 1970-82, Frigate 1986-2002. Unveiled 4th May 2022 40th anniversary of the loss of HMS SHEFFIELD and twenty of the Ship’s Company in The Falklands Conflict. ‘Fair Winds and Following Seas’ In November 2018 it was announced that a new warship would be named HMS Sheffield. It will be the fourth HMS Sheffield

avoid online selling scams We all love a good bargain, and often these can be found through second-hand items and purchased both online and in-person. While these items are often fine, some may face problems when buying them, particularly if they are purchased online. Selling experts from secondhand retailer for-sale. co.uk have revealed six red flags you should look out for when buying used items to avoid disappointment, or worse fraud. The seller asks for payment outside of the app or website: Many resale sites and apps have security measures for making payments such as the option of a refund if an item doesn’t arrive, however these usually only work through the site itself. If a seller is pressuring you to make
the payment outside of the app, there is a chance that the person is scamming you, and you should avoid them. The seller is selling a lot at once: If there’s an item you’re interested in and the seller is also selling a lot of other items at the same time, this may be a red flag. You should especially watch out for this if all the items they are selling are high value – few people are selling a laptop, a games console, a designer bag, and a phone all at the same time. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is: If the item you are interested in is in high demand, consistently sold-out on online retailers, or is priced far below the market price, it is likely a scam. If something about the purchase doesn’t feel right, don’t go through with it.

watch made in dagenham! senior snooker line-ups First there was Emmeline Pankhurst, now in 1968 we meet Rita O’Grady! Join the women of Ford Dagenham on the picket line, as they fight for equal pay, in this witty, uplifting musical of strength and solidarity. Manor Operatic Society are offering Mercury readers 25% off all tickets for their upcoming production of Made in Dagenham at Sheffield City Hall between the 11th-14th May 2022. The story follows Rita, a working mother, on her journey from disgruntled factory worker to spokesperson for working women. This heart-warming and hilarious musical has a fantastically catchy pop and rock score, guaranteed to leave you smiling from ear to ear! Made in Dagenham sees
MOS welcome some new members alongside familiar faces and the cast is bursting with talent. Preparations are well underway for the upcoming production. They are rehearsing 3 nights a week, ordering costumes and sets and they have even found time to throw a 60’s Karaoke party at their studios. This was of course complete with Brown Ale and Babycham – a firm favourite in the show. Joining the cast this year are Zach Rees (12) and Summer Griffin (10) , they will be playing Graham and Sharon O’Grady. Both children study dance and gymnastics at Berry Academy of Dance in Sheffield. Zach has been a dancer at Manor Operatic Society for was set to play the part of Oliver Twist with MOS in 2020, but
sadly the performance was cancelled due to the pandemic. He is extremely excited to be taking on another principal role this year. This will be Summer’s debut performance with MOS, she is thoroughly enjoying every minute and can’t wait to be on that stage. The children’s on stage parents, Rita and Eddie O’Grady, will be played by real life partners Emily Mae Hoyland and James Smith. This couple have collectively been part of MOS for 18 years and have played many leading roles over the years, most recently Snow White and Muddles in Manor’s 2021/22 pantomime, Snow White. They rarely get to play an on stage couple and are looking forward to the challenge! MOS are thrilled to be
performing at their usual home, the Sheffield City Hall. This is especially poignant this year with the Women of Steel statue outside the steps of the iconic building. ‘We have invited Women’s Institute and Union members from all over South Yorkshire to join us on opening night. In the hopes that we can all join in this fabulous celebration of women standing up for their rights’. Don’t miss out on this fabulous production, tickets are available from Manor Operatic Society at www.ticketsource.co.uk/ manor-operatic-society or by calling 07533 021 407. Quote the code MERCURY for 25% discount.
The 24 players who will contest the Ways Facilities Management World Seniors Snooker Championship have been announced with a few eye catching players making their debut in the event. Maria Catalano, an 11 time ranking event
winner and former World Number 1, will become the first woman to appear at the final stages of a Seniors event, Maria is the cousin of Current World Number 1 Ronnie O’Sullivan. Also making his first appearance will be
former Shanghai Masters, Shootout and World Open Winner Dominic Dale. The field contains no fewer than four World Champions in Stephen Hendry, Joe Johnson, John Parrott and Ken Doherty and five World Seniors Champions, Jimmy White, Peter Lines, Nigel Bond, Darren Morgan and the Defending champion David Lilley. Ahmed Aly will become the first American to play at the Crucible and for Bob Chaperon from Canada he will return to the home of snooker for the first time in 30 years. Africa is represented by Egyptian Wael Talaat and Europe by Ireland’s Frank Sarsfield. Local player Wayne
Cooper is sure to bring a vociferous crowd, as is three times London Champion Gary Filtness. Making up this 24 player field are Lee Walker, Rory McLeod, Michael Judge, Stuart Watson, Patrick Wallace, Tony Knowles and Philip Williams. The event begins on Wednesday 4th May and will be shown on the BBC Digital Channels in the Uk. Tickets are available to see all sessions by calling 0114 249 6000. The Draw will be made during the early coverage of the World Professional Championship.
LIVE EVENTS AT THE PARAMOUNT
MONDAY 25TH APRIL 2022 FROM 7:30PM
Along with Mark Knopfler, John was a founder member of the legendary band who, during their time together, sold over 120 million albums. The evening will feature classics from the Dire Straits back catalogue and include a Q & A led by Paul Cummins (ex-Dire Straits management). Paul will be asking questions, during which John will reveal the story and development of the band from its humble beginnings in a council flat in South London, where songs like Sultans of Swing and Wild West End were created, on their journey to playing all over the world to millions of fans, making albums in London, New York, Montserrat and Nassau; performing and working with some of the world’s most influential and creative musicians and producers.

ALL SQUARE WITH THE CHERRIES 2 POINTS DROPPED United remain unbeaten at Bramall Lane under Paul Heckingbottom, but arguably they deserved to beat fellow promotion rivals Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon. In a closely fought encounter, United had a stonewall penalty denied late on, before Filip Uremović fired wide deep into stoppage-time, but this could prove to be a valuable point in the final reckoning. Heckingbottom named an unchanged side to face the Cherries and was also able to name the same substitutes that were on duty against QPR in midweek. It was a bright opening few minutes with both sides having half chances. Solanke spun Egan from a throw-in but his path to goal was snuffed out, before Norwood’s switch of play saw Stevens deliver first time to the back post but McBurnie couldn’t direct his header on target at full stretch. A spell of good possession from the Blades yielded a corner, Fleck delivered, but on the volley
Norwood fired over. A stunning pass from Foderingham then set Stevens free on the left and from a subsequent corner, Kelly hit his own bar from a Uremović flick on. Stevens was cautioned for holding back Dembele as the visitors grew into the game slightly, with Christie registering a couple of attempts on target, either side of McBurnie having a shot of his own deflected over the bar. Fleck was then cautioned for a foul on the theatrical Smith, before an important interception from Uremović was claimed by Foderingham as Dembele looked to pounce. But the best chance of the opening 45 minutes came in stoppage time as McBurnie and GibbsWhite combined before the latter was denied excellently by Travers. United, kicking towards the Kop, were quickly out of the blocks at the beginning of the second half, but from a short corner, Davies headed

over from Gibbs-White cross. For the next 20 minutes or so, the game was fiercely contested and threatened to boil over on several occasions, prior to Egan receiving a booking for a soft foul on Solanke. McBurnie’s flick on set Gibbs-White racing through on goal but Travers stood tall to deny him as Osborn replaced Fleck as Billing hauled down Norwood and was the latest player to be booked, then Hourihane
warnock calls time on career A Blade born-and-bred and a manager who led United to the Premier League, all at Bramall Lane would like to thank Neil Warnock for his services to the club and the game in generally and wish him all the very best in his retirement
was introduced for the final ten minutes. On 86 minutes, McBurnie hooked on, Gibbs-White got in front of Phillips and was clattered on the follow through, only for referee Whitestone to wave down what was seemingly a blatant penalty. Kelly brought down Gibbs-White deep into added time and on the second phase of the free-kick from Hourihane, Davies headed down and Uremović with the goal at his mercy fired high and wide.
from the game. The 73-year-old announced he was calling time on a managerial career which has spanned over 1,600 games at the weekend and without doubt, he’ll always remember his time in the dugout at S2 fondly managing the club he has always supported. Promotion to the Premier League in the 2005/06 campaign is the obvious highlight, but who could ever forget

The Owls suffered lastgasp frustration at Bolton as the hosts levelled right at the last to deny Wednesday a crucial three points. Here are some talking points from Darren Moore’s postmatch press conference. TWO POINTS DROPPED Of course it does, it can’t feel like anything else. We were dominant today, it was a dominant performance. We created enough chances to win two football matches but we didn’t take them and that’s cost us. Credit to Bolton for never giving up and going to the end but we shouldn’t have allowed that to happen,
the triple assault season of 2002/03, where the Blades pushed Liverpool all the way in the semifinal of the League Cup, was denied by David Seaman and Arsenal in the last four of the FA Cup, before falling short in the play-off final against Wolves at the Millennium Stadium. Thanks for all the memories Neil, enjoy your retirement.
we should’ve put the game to bed. So yes, it feels like two points dropped, but we move on, it’s another game gone, we are still in there and there is a lot of football still to be played. ON JORDAN STOREY Jordan has done what it says on the tin since he has been here, he has defended his goal and his lines. So to see him score and celebrate with the 5,000 Wednesdayites was very pleasing. He’s had a hard week personally but I’ve kept a close eye on him in training this week and he was ready to come back into the team. I’ve been really impressed
DEAN not too despondent at late equaliser
A late Bolton equaliser was a tough blow to take on Saturday but Harlee Dean believes there were big positives to take away from the point over the Pennines. Wednesday were just minutes away from a maximum haul against the Whites but were pegged back in the 90th minute. The experienced defender was pragmatic in his summary of the game and says despite the obvious frustrations,

with Jordan since he came to Sheffield Wednesday and today would’ve been the icing on the cake for him.
ON SET PIECES We’ve scored from one set piece today and conceded from one set piece today so we know what we have to do better. I do think on this occasion we have been really unfortunate because it was a bit of pinball in our box, the ball has ricoched off one of our players and landed right in the path of their lad, who shoots and scores. That’s football sometimes, it can hurt you and today it has.
the Owls can feel encouraged and positive going forward. “It was frustrating and we are disappointed, especially with the manner of the goal,” Dean said. “But at the same time we are positive and encouraged by the performance and how many chances we had against a very good team away from home. To play like that and show what we are about, the fans clapped us at the end and it shows they could see how good we were. But it also shows you have got to kill games off. Whether that be keeping the clean sheet or scoring more goals, at 1-0 there is always a risk. We are positive, we are confident, we are happy with how we are performing it’s just that final little bit in both boxes.”
ON THE FANS I was disappointed for everyone at the end and not least the 5,000 fans who backed us magnificently today. We couldn’t have asked for anything more and unfortunately they will not be going home happy. But my message to them is that we will shake this disappointment off, we will dust ourselves down, and straight from Monday we focus on going to MK Dons next Saturday. ON PLAYERS COMING BACK The treatment room is clearing thankfully and long may that continue. I want as any bodies as possible for the last few weeks. Liam Palmer was back in the squad and that’s a positive. This week we will take a good look at Lewis and Dennis. We have a very busy April period, and at the end of April we will know which path we are taking and I want as many players on that path as possible.
The Owls are unbeaten in six and now focus on Saturday night’s televised trip to MK Dons, who are flying in League One. “It’s as important as any other game,” Dean continued. “We know they are up there but any game you play at this stage, it’s just about the three points. They are a good footballing team, we know they are doing really well but it will be just as hard against them as it was against AFC Wimbledon for us last week. Every game produces a different challenge, the way you have got to approach it, the way you can play. It’s three points on offer and we have to go there and give it our best to get them.”

“I’d like to thank the fans, I think they stayed with the team today. In the first half, we were okay and I thought if we got the first goal, we’d go on to win it. “We conceded the first goal and – it’s happened a few times at home – we looked really disjointed. We didn’t play well enough after that to get something out of the game. “Realistically, we didn’t work the keeper enough. We’ll go in tomorrow and watch the game together. “We weren’t at our best. I’m not sure if we deserved to lose, but I don’t think we deserved to win, if I’m honest. “For the first 50 minutes, we played well and looked the better team, however when they scored, we were all over the place. We just need to help the players have a little bit more confidence and we need to believe the chances would come. “It didn’t feel like we were going to score today and that isn’t like us.”

McSheffrey urges players to harness Crewe positivity Gary McSheffrey has challenged his Rovers players to harness the positivity of their win over Crewe Alexandra and accelerate their push for survival. Rovers returned to winning ways with a 2-0 triumph over relegated Alex, courtesy of goals from Tommy Rowe and Josh Martin. McSheffrey - who believes Rovers need to win all their remaining matches - is confident his players will have taken a good deal of confidence from Saturday’s win. McSheffrey on how the game played out: “I think we started well and deservedly went ahead. We could have been ahead by two or three in the first half but we got a bit sloppy towards the end of the half with too many touches, being loose on the ball and giving Crewe some momentum. They should have gone in all square. They missed a good chance, hit the post and we rode our luck a little bit. I said to the boys at half time that we needed to be better and we were letting them off the hook. I think they felt it was enough to be one up but it wasn’t. We started well again, scored at a really good time and after that you want to be going on to score three or four but we let them back into it a bit again. We needed to manage the game a bit better and dominate the ball. “That’s nit-picking. The lads haven’t been in that position for a while, and you can understand why the nerves crept in during such a big game. “I’m delighted with the win. The workrate was good. “The other side of the game from the likes of [Adam] Clayton, [John] Bostock and [Matt] Smith was superb. They did the ugly things well and put out a lot of fires. “Ro-Shaun Williams saved us a couple of times
on counterattacks by reading the pass and making good interceptions.” On the boost of a win: “The feeling is great. The next win is always the hardest and we’ve got it. The challenge to the players now is can we keep it going? Can we go back-to-back? We’ve not gone back-to-back all season which is not ideal. You look at the likes of Morecambe last week going back-to-back and it gets them out of it for a week. ‘We know we’ve got good opposition coming here on Friday and then we go to Shrewsbury on the Monday. “It’s got to give them confidence, belief. It’s a good clean sheet and a win. It’s just something to hold onto.” On building for Bolton: “They’ll have a day off on Sunday. I told them to enjoy their weekend and their Saturday evening because they’ve not done so for a while. “We’re back in Monday, good to go, and we’ll prep Wednesday and Thursday for Bolton.” On the race for survival: “I said to the lads that it was all about their performance. We played well at Wycombe but didn’t have the cutting edge to score. “We respect Crewe but we feel we’re a better team than them so it was all about our performance and being brave, getting on the ball and scoring goals. That’s got to be the same for the remaining games. We respect the opposition and do our homework on them but it’s all about our performance level. If we could go back-to-back it would give the boys so much confidence and momentum. You just never know. We’re still in there fighting. “The results went our way again. It’s just disappointing that we’ve not capitalised on that previously. “We’re still in a position where we can keep trying to close the gap.”
