Yorkshire Water backs Be Water Aware campaign Yorkshire Water is once again backing the National Fire Chiefs Council’s (NFCC) Be Water Aware campaign, as the utility company continues to see people entering its reservoirs daily. The campaign, which is also backed by the Yorkshire-based Fire and
Rescue Services, aims to encourage sensible behaviour around water, particularly for those who may never intend to enter the water. The latest figures indicate almost 50% of the 254 accidental drowning deaths in 2020 had no intention of entering the water.
Almost two-thirds of the accidental drownings in 2020 occurred at inland sites and the NFCC campaign outlines that many people underestimate the risk of jumping into cold water, with the effects of cold water shock and not knowing how to self-rescue causing even the strongest swimmers to get into difficulties. Yorkshire Water continues to see people entering its 130 reservoirs on a daily basis, despite warnings about the dangers reservoirs can pose, such as cold water shock, hidden undercurrents and operating machinery. Ash Roberts, public safety and safeguarding manager, said: “People entering our reservoirs continues to be a daily occurrence, whether that be those intending to
swim or people deciding the water looks inviting. We know as the weather improves the frequency of people getting into the water will increase and we are backing the NFCC campaign in a bid to raise awareness of the dangers open water poses. “It is vital those visiting our sites stay out of the water, no matter how tempting it may appear. Cold water shock, undercurrents and operating machinery all pose dangers to people deciding to enter the water. “If people see others in difficulty in the water, they should contact the emergency services on 999 as they are trained to deal with such events.” Yorkshire Water has further enhanced its water safety education programme for children across Yorkshire
in recent months. Live events and virtual lessons are available for children at Key Stages 2, 3 and 4. Aligned to Swim England’s water safety advice, the events inform children how to keep themselves and their friends safe near open water and explain the hidden dangers in reservoirs, rivers, canals and seas. Yorkshire Water’s education team also explain ‘Float to Live’ lifesaving technique and what to do in an emergency situation. Water safety education events can be booked via the Yorkshire Water website at www.yorkshirewater. com.

One of the most beloved sports broadcasting brands in the world, TMS is a benchmark of cricket journalism and sports commentary. Spend an evening with
BBC Radio 5 Live, Ashes, and World Cup winning stars Phil Tufnell, Jonathan Agnew, and Mark Wood, as they ‘take you inside the famous BBC commentary box’ and share memories from their remarkable playing careers. What was it like facing the late Shane Warne is his prime? Which member of the TMS team never buys dinner? And what really happened the night after the 2005 Ashes? The iconic England trio have watched more cricket (and eaten more cake!) than almost anyone else and can tell amazing stories of life on the road as players, and now as commentators. From Barbados to Birmingham
and Christchurch to Kolkata – they’ve seen it all. Enjoy never-beforeseen footage of iconic commentary moments, hear how the team kept their emotions in check on-air at the World Cup Final and find out what life is really like watching England from the finest seat in the house. Mark Wood, who represents England internationally and plays domestic cricket for Durham is well known as one of the fastest bowlers in the world, reaching speeds up to 97mph! The powerful bowler took the wicket to retain the 2015 Ashes and help England win the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
BBC Cricket producer Adam Mountford: “Test Match Special is so fortunate to have a unique and special relationship with its audience, and this is a wonderful opportunity for three of our stars to hit the road and meet some of those who make the programme what it is – the listeners. I’m looking forward to catching some of the shows, too, and share in a celebration of cricket, radio commentary and perhaps a little cake!” Tickets for Test Match Special at the Sheffield City Hall show on Thursday 28 April 2022 are on sale now from www.sheffieldcityhall. co.uk/.

SNODGRASS I’m reading a horror book in Braille. Something bad is going to happen. I can feel it. I would like to be a millionaire just like my dad. He always wanted to be a millionaire too. A woman is on trial for beating her husband to death with his guitar collection. The judge asks her: “First offender?” She replies: “No. First a Gibson, then a Fender.” I was really embarrassed when my wife walked in on me playing with my son’s train set by myself, so in a moment of panic, I threw a bed sheet over it... I think I’ve managed to cover my tracks. My wife says I only have 2 faults. I don’t listen - and something else... I told my wife that a husband ages like wine. We get better with age. Then she locked me in the cellar. My author friend claims he “accidentally” glued himself to his autobiography, but I don’t believe him. Anyway, that’s his story and he’s sticking to it. I recently found a round, black piece of plastic, with a hole in the middle and grooves on both sides. I picked it up and threw it. It flew for more than 300 yards. I’m sure that must be a record. My wife said she’d leave me if I didn’t stop eating Pasta. Now I’m feeling cannelloni. I’ve been diagnosed with a chronic fear of giants. Feefiphobia. I’ve been saying “mucho” to my Spanish friend a lot more often lately. It means a lot to him.

key priorities for new mayor domestic abuse appeal launched Improving education and skills for young people, franchising buses, and driving growth in Sheffield’s city centre should be the new Mayor of South Yorkshire’s top priorities for 2022, according to a report published by Centre for Cities. Enacting these policies would play a vital role in levelling up the region by developing a high-skilled workforce, improving transport links, and boosting the economic performance of its urban areas. The report, entitled South Yorkshire Metro Mayor: Three Policy Priorities for 2022, comes as voters across the combined authority prepare to head to the polls on Thursday 5 May. The new mayor’s immediate priorities should be to: 1. Improve education and skills for young people across South Yorkshire. Currently, every local authority across the South Yorkshire area performs below the national average in school achievement. For example, 47 per cent of students in England achieved at least a grade 5 in both their English and maths GCSEs in 2019, but only 42 per cent of students in Barnsley, 39 per cent of students in Sheffield, 34 per cent of students in Rotherham, and 33 per cent of students in Doncaster did so. While the new mayor of South Yorkshire will not have
any direct powers over schools, they should use their high profile position to champion the improvement of primary and secondary education attainment. This can be done by: • Bringing together school leaders from across South Yorkshire to discuss common difficulties and establish best practices for improving education across the region • Championing the work of education charities to inspire young people to learn and ensure they develop vital skills for successful careers. 2. Franchise the bus system. Unreliable bus services are a major problem across South Yorkshire, where the current privatised system has led to a lack of services, fragmented routes and expensive journeys. Franchising would allow the new mayor to coordinate the routes, schedules and fares of the bus network, making bus travel more accessible and attractive for people living and working in South Yorkshire. 3. Ensure development in South Yorkshire supports growth in Sheffield’s city centre. Sheffield’s city centre is the largest and most economically productive urban area in South Yorkshire and contains a high concentration of high-skilled, wellpaid jobs. However, a lack of office space combined with poor transport links means

it is underperforming in comparison to other cities across the UK – the total number of jobs in Sheffield’s city centre fell by two per cent between 1998 and 2015, while they grew by at least 25 per cent in other northern city centres, including Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool. A lack of quality public transport links is also damaging Sheffield, where just 35 per cent of residents can reach the city centre within 30 minutes by train, tram or bus. Encouraging the construction of more office space in Sheffield’s city centre, while boosting demand for them by building housing near key transport routes, should be a key part of the new mayor’s strategy to drive growth and increase prosperity in South Yorkshire. Centre for Cities Chief Executive Andrew Carter said: “As South Yorkshire emerges from the pandemic and grapples with a growing cost of living crisis, the new mayor will face huge challenges to repair the damage and get the region on the path to success. Whoever is elected on the 5th May will need to work closely with local businesses, councils and the Government to level up South Yorkshire by boosting skills, overhauling public transport, and driving growth in its urban areas. Failing to prioritise these policies will slow recovery and potentially hold South Yorkshire back from reaching its full potential as a hub of high-skilled, well-paid jobs.”

Domestic Abuse can be physical, psychological, emotional, sexual, or financial. It affects one in four women and one in six men during their lifetime. In some cases, it results in death, with two women murdered by a current or former partner each week. One in five children will witness domestic abuse. Gemma Gibbs, Yorkshire Regional Manager at the charity Crimestoppers, said: “Nobody should feel unsafe in their own home. We hear heartbreaking stories every day from people who contact us about their suspicions of domestic abuse when it happens to a friend, family member, neighbour, or colleague. It’s so important that when we know someone is suffering that we do the right thing. We understand some people

mayor’s charity skydive
Brown, the Lord Mayor’s son-in-law, said “I thought I should do the jump to support Gail, a bit nervous but it is for charity so, yes, let’s do it! Crimestoppers has launched a new campaign in South and East Yorkshire encouraging people to be aware of the signs of domestic abuse and to speak up about their suspicions 100% anonymously. It comes as latest figures show domestic abuse across Yorkshire up by a third between 2021-22, having risen by 70% between 2020 and 2021. This campaign aims to encourage residents to contact the charity and will see social media posts across the counties highlighting the essential signs to spot. 2020/2021 saw a 70% increase in reports on domestic abuse for the Yorkshire & Humber region, with a further 34% rise for 2021/22. It is estimated that a typical victim endures up to 35 assaults before speaking up. This can be for many varied reasons such as fear of losing their children or their home, worrying about not being believed or even thinking that they are to blame for the abuse. Bystanders – those

campaign to boost pub trade The Campaign for Real Ale is gearing up to launch its “Summer of Pub” Campaign (2 May – 29 August) which encourages people to head down to their local and support the trade after an incredibly difficult two years. Pubs and breweries across the UK have been asked to organise a range of events to celebrate the first summer without restrictions – whether it be an open mic night, pub quiz or tap takeover. These events will be captured by CAMRA on an interactive map, allowing beer lovers to seek out pubs, clubs and taprooms that are running events nearby. Pubs, breweries and local branches can help spread the word with a wide range of marketing materials freely available through CAMRA. In addition, CAMRA will be working closely with
external partners to put together a real calendar of celebrations around pivotal events in the summer season. The long bank holiday weekend (2-5 June) will be a key moment in the Campaign, with CAMRA collaborating with the organisers of HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations (2-5 June) to promote and celebrate The Big Jubilee Lunch and Thank You Day. As part of the celebrations, CAMRA will be supporting the Good Beer Co’s initiative to get “Thank Brew” into independent pubs and breweries around the country. Thank Brew is a 3.5% ABV easy drinking Pale Ale created by Fergus Fitzgerald from Adnams, and it is the official beer for the Jubilee Weekend. All profits from ‘Thank Brew’ sales will support three different causes – the Eden projects communities
which runs The Big Lunch, Together Coalition which runs Thank You Day and Reset Communities and Refugees, a charity supporting Ukrainian refugees arriving in the UK to live with families in communities across Britain under the government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme. CAMRA will be urging pubs and breweries to stock Thank Brew and run celebratory events over the Jubilee Weekend as part of a Summer of Pub. Beer-lovers will be able to find out who’s stocking Thank Brew on tap and where to celebrate via an interactive map on the website. Another key partnership over the summer will be with Ask Clive to promote “Pub Pride” on 27 May. Pub Pride is a night for venues to celebrate their local LGBTQ+ community and welcome
Pride month in their hometown. All Pub Pride events will be available to view on CAMRA’s Summer of Pub map, with a special highlight on Good Beer Guide entries getting involved in the celebrations. Nik Antona, CAMRA’s National Chairman said: “The concept behind a Summer of Pub is really quite simple – it’s that the easiest way to support pubs is to use them. That is why we will be working with partners throughout the summer to highlight fantastic events taking place and continually rally people down to their local. “Pubs have been through a horrendous two years of lockdowns and restrictions and need help to get back on their feet. At the end of the day, you don’t need to be a campaigner to make a difference – let’s just celebrate a return to normal this summer by raising a glass to the trade!”
LIVE EVENTS AT THE PARAMOUNT
CELEBRATE THE HAPPY & GLORIOUS JUBILEE There will be many special celebrations this year for Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, but few will appeal to our senior citizen’s more than the smash hit patriotic matinee show. Happy & Glorious from Neil Sands Productions who for over the past 16 years have been delighting audiences with their spectacular trips back down memory lane earning themselves the title of “The Masters of Matinee Nostalgia” Produced specially to celebrate this regal occasion Happy & Glorious will be appearing at Sheffield City Hall on 19 May 2022. Tickets are available via www. sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/. This unforgettable afternoon of patriotic nostalgia is filled with over 60 all-time favourite
songs many from the stars of Her Majesty’s Royal Command performances. Travel back to the rocking 1950’s and the swinging 1960’s, enjoy ever popular show tunes and sing along to a Pearly King & Queen old time knees up. Add to that a rousing selection from Last Night of The Proms, and a flag waving finale in a tribute to the veterans of the armed forces, singing the songs that won the war. Joining Neil for this incredibly special afternoon of music and memories are two amazingly talented young ladies with outstanding voices. Both Babette Smith and Sophie Pinsent have graced many West End stages. With backing from the very talented Golden Times, this
really is an afternoon of nostalgic bliss, filled with over 50 spectacular costumes and packed with songs guaranteed to having you singing along from start to finish. With a patriotic stage set, enough bunting, and flags to host a street party, and a unique atmosphere that will have you singing along from start to finish.
This is truly an afternoon to celebrate our nation’s music and heritage with pride and passion. After having spent so long under Covid restrictions it will be a relief to finally go out and enjoy live entertainment again with your spirits being lifted as we all join to celebrate such a regal and historical occasion.

BLADES A STEP CLOSER TO PLAYOFFS WE HAVE TO REACT United took a giant stride towards securing a play-off spot with a hard fought victory over Cardiff City at Bramall Lane. Iliman Ndiaye’s second half header proved decisive in a game United always shaded, despite a plucky performance from Steve Morrison’s Bluebirds. Boss Heckingbottom made one enforced change with Baldock (hamstring) missing out, with Osborn drafted into to fill the void. Skipper Sharp was named amongst the substitutes. The visitors were the team on the front foot in the opening five minutes. Foderingham’s handle had to be assured and it was to collect an early Drameh cross from the right with Hugill lurking.
But in the fifth minute, Foderingham was extended further to deny Watters after he’d strode through on goal. United’s first shot on target came on 14 minutes, Osborn seized the opportunity from distance, but Phillips palmed his dipping effort away. The Blades were now the ones enjoying more of the possession and territory and gradually the chances were coming. Berge latched on to a chip into the area from Gibbs-White, but Phillips made himself big and despite not knowing much about denied the imposing Norwegian. As the first half drew on, the Blades continued to look the likeliest to open the scoring but again Phillips was at his best to save
from Berge, with GibbsWhite typically supplying the pass. Kicking towards the Kop, United got off to the best possible start at the beginning of the second period. Gibbs-White was unsurprisingly the supplier and his cross was met by the unmarked NDIAYE, who powered a bullet header beyond Phillips and into the roof of the net. A flurry of United corners followed as they chased what would have surely been a game clinching second, but Cardiff stood firm, although it is fair to say they made some cynical fouls to prevent the momentum building as McGuiness was cautioned and he was quickly followed into the book by Ng. Sharp received a warm
hand as he replaced Ndiaye with around 20 minutes remaining, but at the other end, Foderingham was alert to the danger to punch clear a McGuiness header from a Vaulks long throw into the area. Cardiff went in search of an equaliser but in truth never really troubled the hosts. Five minutes of added
The Blades are once again rewarding loyalty by freezing season ticket prices for next season! Current season ticket
holders who renew for 2022/23 before kick-off in the final game of the current season on Saturday 7th May will
pay the same as this campaign. Season tickets are on sale now. United’s Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Bettis, expressed his gratitude for the fans’ backing of Paul Heckingbottom and the players, commenting: “With the highest average attendance in the Championship, the impressive support of Sheffield United fans cannot be questioned and we want to reward that loyalty by freezing the price of a season ticket to those who have been with us all season. “As well as appreciating the loyalty, we also
understand the pressures on the cost of living at the moment and we hope that the structure of our pricing - which signals no increase since 2019 - will also be of assistance at this tough time. “Hecky regularly highlights the importance of Unitedites, particularly at Bramall Lane, and whilst we understand there’s plenty still to play for this season, we
time were indicated and they passed without any concern, with United coming within a whisker of a second as GibbsWhite teed up Berge, but his side-footed effort hit the far post with Phillips beaten this time. It mattered not though as the three points further strengthened United’s grip on sixth place
Darren Moore said the Owls need to react in the right manner against Fleetwood on Tuesday following our 1-0 defeat to Wycombe at Adams Park. Jordan Obita’s second half strike won three points for the Chairboys, and Moore believes a lapse in concentration lost Wednesday the game. He said: “There was one moment in the game where we switched off and lost concentration, one moment, and it was the clearest cut chance of the game. “After that, I don’t feel we threatened enough to
score the goal to get back in the game. We tried to change it with Mide and Pato coming on the pitch, but the game ended up running away from us. “We huffed and puffed in the first half but we just failed to get the final touch in the final third that would have made us more threatening. “They were dogged in their approach, I don’t think there was much between the teams but they got the goal in the end. “What we can’t do is let the disappointment of today go into Tuesday, because we have to react
in the right manner.” Chey Dunkley had a first half goal chalked off for a foul, but Moore believes the effort should have stood. He added: “Chey Dunkley had a goal disallowed, I’ve just watched it and I didn’t realise it was so clear cut. “If anything, the infringement is on Chey. We’ll send a report in to the referee and see what the explanation is, but it’s a clear goal. “It’s disappointing, but we can’t allow that to affect us because we have to react in the right way on Tuesday.”

BAZZA WINS GOAL OF THE YEAR Barry Bannan has scooped the EFL Goal of the Season award for the 2021/22 campaign! The skipper’s wonder strike came earlier this month on the road against MK Dons. The Scot spotted Dons goalkeeper Jamie Cumming off his line and executed the most delightful dipping lob from 40 yards out in front of the Sky Sports cameras. Bannan beat off stiff
competition from Cole Stockton, Alex Mowatt, Bersant Celina, Andre Gray and Ben Wilmot to land the EFL award. The Owls captain was chosen as the winner by an EFL judging panel
during the League’s annual awards dinner on Sunday 24 April at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. Bannan was also named in the Sky Bet League One Team of the Season!

Paul Warne post-Oxford “We were quite surprised how Oxford played, they are a great footballing side, but they were trying to turn us down the sides. “The equalising goal was crucial. It changed our team talk at half time and we were able to go full positive with them. “I just wanted them to be brave and do the right thing. I didn’t want them to be tense, we got the goal at a really good time and in the second half we were back to our best. “The atmosphere today was really good and I’m thankful to the fans, they stuck with the team today and helped us to the result. “Chieo was excellent today, at times he was unplayable and did really well for the penalty. We had plenty of chances to add to the goals, but it wasn’t to be. “The lads showed really good character, they are an amazing group and to finish the way we did against a good Oxford side is testament to them.”

McSheffrey pleased with Rovers’ lateseason momentum Rovers boss Gary McSheffrey was delighted to see his side maintaining their late season momentum as they signed off their home campaign with a win over Burton Albion. Goals from Joe Dodoo and Josh Martin, plus a Jonathan Mitchell penalty save, saw Rovers triumph 2-0 to continue the recent trend of positive performances. McSheffrey on how the game panned out: “I thought we rode our luck in the first half, weathered a storm. It was really windy and they play direct. They’ll grind you down, win corners, throw-ins where [Tom] Hamer can launch it in. “I thought we stood up to them really well and dug in. “In the best bit of play of the half we went ahead. Adam [Clayton] finds a lovely through ball, Knoyley delivers the cross and Joe [Dodoo] did what we want him to do. He was a real handful, winning his headers. “We got in at half time with our noses in front and I thought in the second half we were comfortable apart from a couple of really good efforts from them. “We had three or four good counterattacks and finally Josh [Martin] finished one off with a really good bit of play.”
dug in, worked hard, won second balls, got lots of first contacts in the box and defended well. “The momentum has picked up and it’s just unfortunate that we’ve run out of games with it.” On Joe Dodoo’s performance: “He started down the middle and then we wanted him to be the deeper one of the two, picking up the deep midfielder. “I think the goal just showed the energy it gave him and the confidence. He looked like he could run all day. “It’s amazing what a goal can do for somebody. “In the second half, we just tried to manage the game a bit better. It was windy out there. “He peeled out wide into areas, up against their smaller full back. It wasn’t pretty second half but we got the win.” On the message to the players before the game: “It’s just important that we finish the season as good as we can and keep this momentum. “We need to give the fans something to be optimistic about coming back to the stadium next year. “I think they can probably see how we want to play with the performance level of late. “It was about winning the last home game because we’re not playing here for a while and it gives the fans some optimism.”
On handing Adam Clayton the captain’s armband: “He’s an ex-Premier League player. He’s stepped up On the penalty: his game in the last four or five weeks. “There was lots of grappling going on and he said Kyle [Knoyle] wasn’t looking at the ball. [Cameron] “Initially I chucked him in a bit too early. You sink or swim because you don’t know where they’re at Borthwick-Jackson for them doesn’t look at the and he’d missed a year of football at Birmingham, ball from set plays - he acts as a blocker who grapples people, so I’m not sure how they came to albeit training and fit. It showed he didn’t have the that decision. “But Johnny [Mitchell] makes a good match-sharpness against one of the best teams in the league. “But we gave him the time he needed. save.” “He’s good in the dressing room, he’s good at the training ground and you can see his experience. On being clinical in front of goal: He’s good in the media and he knows the game. “That’s the difference. “We’ve picked up some momentum and that is five games now, barring the “It was a no-brainer. It was going to be him or RoShaun [Williams] and I went with Adam. first half at Shrewsbury, where I’m happy with the way the lads have played. “They’ve got on the ball “He goes into the summer knowing he’s still a player and his fitness levels are there. “He can and been brave. “In this one they showed the ugly side as well. They come back with real confidence for next season.”
