Unit 4, The Parade, Thorogate, Rawmarsh, Rotherham S62 7HX
Executive of South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and Returning Officer, said: “We’ve been spreading the word far and wide, from the football grounds to social media to messages on buses across the region, this mayor will represent you and we want everyone to get out and have their say on who should step into the role. “There’s such an
important job ahead for the Mayor of South Yorkshire. They will oversee a budget of £1.3 billion over their four-year tenure which includes funding for economic development, transport, regeneration, net zero projects and adult education.” Once the polls close at 10pm, votes will be collected by each of the four local authorities with counting will take place on Friday.
Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley and Sheffield will each announce their local totals before the overall result is announced, expected to come sometime in the afternoon of Friday 6 May. Dave Smith continued: “The message is clear. If you live in South Yorkshire and care about your region, use your vote to decide who your mayor will be.”

LIVE EVENTS AT THE PARAMOUNT
SUNDAY 15TH MAY 2022 SHOW STARTS 7:30PM • TICKETS £20
When Daphne’s Flight completed their last tour in 2018 and after a handful of euphoric festival performances in 2019 which garnered them an army of new followers, the stage was set for a 25th anniversary tour in 2020 with a brand new album to launch and celebrate. Then the world turned upside down. What followed were two frustrating years of postponed dates and a career sitting idle, unable to capitalise on the momentum that had been building since their 2017 reunion tour. Now the heavy cloud of the pandemic has lifted and the stage is set for a euphoric return to touring for Daphne’s Flight. With a heavy heart, Christine Collister pulled out of the band for personal reasons at the beginning of 2022 so Chris, Helen, Julie and Mel asked Miranda Sykes (Show of Hands) to join the band. The result in rehearsals couldn’t be better, the blend of personalities and musical synergy has given new energy and hope to Daphne’s and so a new chapter begins. Five individually successful solo artists in their own rights, together they create a unique and unparalleled force, empowering women of all ages, producing music that is relatable, moving and uplifting and creating a chemistry on stage that is both joyful and contagious. Ask any musician what they are most looking forward to post pandemic and the resounding answer will be performing on stage again to live audiences.

SHED SEVEN KICK OFF RACECOURSE’S LIVE MUSIC SEASON The first live music event of summer 2022 at Doncaster Racecourse, the unique gig will invite audiences to enjoy an entire day of racing at one of the UK’s most prestigious arenas, with the added bonus of a full Shed Seven set late into the evening. Rising to fame as one of the leading lights of the Britpop scene, some 30 years since their formation in York in 1990, Shed Seven have established themselves as one of the nation’s favourite alternative rock bands. Turning heads with the release of their classic debut album ‘Change Giver’ in 1994, the Rick Witter five-piece unfurled
a flurry of smash hits that would come to define the period and amassed an impressive fifteen Top 40 singles and four Top 20 albums over the next 5 years. After an extended hiatus in 2003, the Sheds surprised and delighted fans and critics alike as they returned with their first new studio album for 16 years: ‘Instant Pleasures’. Demonstrative of a band back at the top of their game and rippling with ideas once more, ‘Instant Pleasures’ delivered exactly what it said on the tin. Rightfully rewarded with a Top 10 UK chart position, rave reviews and national radio playlistings, the band are
more in-demand than ever. Thrilling audiences nationwide on their packed-out ‘Shedcember’ tour of 2021 (an extensive tour of the UK’s most capacious venues), the band are showing no signs of slowing the pace any time soon. The Sheds now look-on to their huge Doncaster Racecourse performance in Summer 2022. With anthemic hits spanning three decades and energy in spades, few bands could be better suited to long summer evening show to a Yorkshire county crowd than Shed Seven. Recently celebrating the 25th anniversary of their
first album release, expect a mix of Sheds classics including ‘She Left Me On Friday’, ‘Dolphin’, ‘Disco Down’, ‘High Hopes’, ‘Where Have You Been Tonight?’ and more, plus choice cuts from recent album ‘Instant Pleasures’, including fan favourites ‘Room In My House’ and ‘Better Days’.

dangers of daytime sleepiness save on energy bills While it may be normal to be tired after a night of poor sleep, when that sleepiness is severe and persistent, an underlying problem is often to blame. Sleep expert Carolyn Rousch reveals the symptoms and dangers of excessive daytime sleeping. What is excessive daytime sleepiness? Most of the time, a good night’s sleep is enough to set things right. However, for some people, those days drag on into weeks or even months. This chronic sleepiness is called excessive daytime sleepiness, or EDS for short. It is crucial to note that EDS is not a disorder in and of itself but a sign of something much more severe. Often referred to as hypersomnia, people with excessive daytime sleepiness find it challenging to stay awake or alert during regular waking hours. While we all periodically experience an overwhelming urge to sleep during the day, this sleepiness becomes “excessive” when it becomes a near-daily occurrence for three months and interferes with everyday life, negatively impacting productivity, mood, and overall well-being. What are the symptoms of EDS? Unsurprisingly, drowsiness is the most common symptom of excessive daytime sleeping. However, there are other symptoms of sleepiness that are not
as clear, including the following: • Difficulty staying alert Irritability or moodiness Memory issues • Inability to retain new concepts/information • Struggles with focus and concentration • Brain fog and difficulty making decisions • Slow reaction times. What are the causes of excessive daytime sleepiness? EDS can be caused by a lack of quality sleep caused by poor sleep habits, an underlying sleep condition, or even another medical condition. Some of these issues are minor and easily treatable through simple lifestyle changes, whilst others are severe and require medical intervention to manage. Conditions that can cause excessive sleepiness include restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, insomnia, depression, and obstructive sleep apnea. Because of the wide range of potential conditions that can lead to excessive sleepiness, it is best to speak with a specialist to rule out different causes. What are the dangers of excessive daytime sleepiness? If untreated, excessive daytime sleepiness can lead to some significant consequences. EDS has been shown to reduce overall quality of life, with sleepiness linked to social and relationship problems, increased risk of errors and accidents and reduced productivity

at work or school. In addition, sleep conditions are linked to higher incidences of health issues, including cognitive impairment, heart disease and even earlier mortality. Should you be concerned about daytime sleepiness If you are sleepy occasionally, but it is not causing you problems, there is usually nothing to worry about. However, if sleepiness is consistently affecting your life, a doctor may be able to help you understand and address persistent issues. You should see a doctor when you experience any of the following longterm symptoms: • Your sleepiness is almost constant • You are struggling with short-term memory and other cognitive issues • You cannot shake the brain fog • You are concerned about falling asleep while driving or doing other high-risk activities • You find it difficult to sleep at night, despite being exhausted. What are the treatments for excessive sleepiness? Making some lifestyle changes can ultimately help improve night-time slumber and daytime alertness across the board. Some changes can include limiting caffeine, eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly for food sleep. Also, spending time outdoors is another critical element to help treat daytime sleepiness. Our circadian rhythms are naturally tied to daylight, and so exposing ourselves to natural light at the right times is key to regulating our circadian rhythms. When these methods are not enough and further treatment is needed, your doctor can help determine the right treatment plan for you.
Learn how to save money on your gas and electricity bills and reduce your home’s energy consumption – a series of small changes can have a big impact! Now is a good time to think about how we use energy as we face the 54% increase – and plan for a costly Winter 2022! Rather than wait until then, now is the time to start making changes. These small hacks can save you hundreds. Turn off standby mode When you leave electrical appliances on but unused, they enter ‘standby mode’. While the device looks like it isn’t using up any energy, it is using electricity in the background, referred to as ‘phantom power’. Although the device appears turned off, it is still using up to 5% of the power it consumes while it is turned on. This mounts up when you consider how many devices are left in standby. Up to 40% of gamers leave their consoles on standby, and 75% of people leave their TV in standby mode.
save money with crafts There are many projects you can save money on by simply doing it yourself, although projects require lots of time and lots of supplies. The crafts below, revealed by experts from Crafty.net are not only rewarding and easy to learn but can also save you cash in the long run. The Energy Savings Trust estimated that £80 of our annual energy bill is made up of standby power! Appliances like microwaves, washing machines, dishwashers, TV’s, computers, and games consoles all use power in standby. Turn these devices off at the wall and switch your computer to ‘sleep mode’ to save money. Switch to energyefficient devices £68 million is wasted across British households due to overfilled kettles. Only boil what you need or save up to 30% energy by purchasing an environmentally friendly kettle which can keep water hot for up to 4 hours to save re-boiling costs! 15% of a home’s energy usage is down to lighting. One of the fastest ways to reduce your energy bills is to install LED energyefficient lighting. It is still important to switch lights off if you’re not using them. bulbs, only convert 5% of energy into visible light, so you are paying more, for less light! If you regularly have baths, switch to showers for quick energy savings, as there is less water to heat. If you are buying white goods this year, it has never been more important to check the energy efficiency labels. Refrigeration, in particular, costs the UK £2bn every year in electricity. Always aim for an ‘A’ rating. Save energy washing your clothes Household laundry contributes significantly to your energy bills. There are ways to reduce your costs: • Wash at 30 degrees – the Energy Savings Trust estimates the average household can save £28 a year just by lowering the temperature. • Only use your washing machine once a week, where possible. • Switch your tumble dryer for a drying rack or line. • Reduce your ironing by hanging creased clothes in the bathroom Reduce costs of staying
warm Improving the insulation of your home is a weekend DIY or handyman job. If your home is not effectively insulated, 30% of your heat is lost through its walls and 25% of your heat is lost through the roof. Insulate your walls and attic to save in the long run! Draughtproofing your home is one of the best ways to cut energy costs, blocking cracks, gaps and holes in windows and doors through which heat can escape. Shutting doors can also help keep the heat in a room. Heat can also easily escape from water tanks and pipes if they are not properly insulated. Get your pipes checked and install sleeves where needed. A better-insulated water tank will remain hotter for longer and will need
reheating less often. You may be eligible for Government backed energy-savings improvements grants for insulation or repairing or replacing your boiler. Find out more about the ‘Affordable Warmth Obligation’ at Gov.uk. Lowering your central heating thermostat by just one degree can reduce your heating bill by up to 10%! Set your thermostat at the lowest comfortable temperature to stop it burning energy unnecessarily. Lowering the temperature of your boiler is also recommended. The Heating and Hot Water Council found that households can save up to 8% on their gas bill buy turning down the flow temperature on their combi boiler.
also a fun activity to do. Simply buy blank cards and envelopes in bulk, and each one can be customised to your liking, tailored for different events and different people. You can decorate them with drawings, paint, stickers, stamps, ribbons and more. Painting While the first thought for painting might be the walls of your home, many things around your household can benefit from painting. In the living room, kitchen, garden, wherever,
older furniture can be renovated with a new coat of paint, potentially bringing a unique style or theme to your home from just some graft on an afternoon. Quilting Buying the perfect quilt for your bed can be expensive, depending on the style you want. However, a fun option is creating your own from recycled fabric that you might find with old clothes and other items around the house. This can make a quilt that’s a great gift for anyone.
Photo Framing If you love to hang art, photos, and posters around your home, learning framing might benefit you. Frames are another decoration that can get expensive over time, especially when looking into custom designs. While framing might require a few more supplies than other crafts it’s a skill that’ll undoubtedly be rewarding financially but will pay off when you look back at what you’ve made.

THEY AINT HEAVY, THEY’RE PLAYING AT THE CITY HALL One of the most iconic bands in British music, The Hollies, moved their UK tour originally scheduled for Autumn 2021 to this month, calling in at Sheffield City Hall on Tuesday 24th May in order to celebrate their 60th anniversary. The band said: ‘We felt like this is something no other band gets to do, celebrate six decades together, 60 years of these songs that mean so much to us and so many others. We’re incredibly excited performing for everyone on what will be some of the most special shows in the history of The Hollies.’ All previously purchased tickets are still valid for
the new dates. Famed for their soaring, distinctive melodies and brilliantly crafted songs, the 60th anniversary tour will see The Hollies performing their best known hits including ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother’, ‘The Air That I Breathe’, ‘Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)’, ‘Bus Stop’, ‘CarrieAnne’ and ‘Sorry Suzanne’. The line-up includes powerhouse drummer Bobby Elliott, and singer, songwriter, and lead guitarist Tony Hicks, both of whom are original members of the band. They are joined by lead singer Peter Howarth, as well as bass player Ray Stiles, Keyboardist Ian
Parker, and Steve Lauri on Rhythm Guitar. Celebrated as one of the most influential bands from the 1960s British Invasion era alongside the likes of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, the Hollies have had over 20 world-wide hits, including number one singles in both the US and UK. They have spent an astonishing 263 weeks in the UK top 40 official singles chart, and have been performing continuously since their formation in 1962. Their cultivated musicianship, coupled with the Hollies’ extensive back catalogue of memorable rock ‘n’ roll tunes, has ensured the
longevity of one of the greatest groups to emerge from the early 1960’s British Rock Revolution. In 1995, they were bestowed the coveted Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution To British Music, and in 2010 were inducted into the American Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame for their ‘impact on the evolution, development and perpetuation of Rock and Roll’. Tickets are available now from the City Hall Box Office and also www. sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

FRIDAY NIGHT IS ALRIGHT FOR BLADES MOORE POST-POMPEY United produce a remarkable second half showing to strengthen their grip on a playoff spot with a richly deserved success at Queens Park Rangers. Having harshly trailed at the break to a Charlie Austin header, United were simply irresistible after the interval and having levelled through Iliman Ndiaye, the Blades blew the R’s away with further goals from Jack Robinson and Conor Hourihane. United named an unchanged starting XI for the clash in the capital, but Jebbison was drafted on to the bench, replacing the injured Sharp, who missed out with a calf problem picked up in training. The Blades were quickly on the front foot and won a corner which was headed wide by Basham.
Moments later, Berge burst through a gapping hole in the hosts backline, but unfortunately, the through ball was overhit. The Norwegian international was proving a real danger and after he was blocked when powering towards goal, Stevens saw his follow up effort deflected behind for a corner. But against the run of play, United fell behind on the half hour as AUSTIN rose above Basham at the back post to head into the bottom corner from Adomah’s cross. Looking for an instant response, United won the ball high, but from inside the area, Gibbs-White was denied by Mahoney. Berge then robbed Amos in his own half and teed up Ndiaye, but he blazed over from a promising position. The Blades pushed until half-time, but in the
minute of stoppage-time that was added it was Foderingham who had to deny Austin twice in quick succession. The tone for the second half would be set inside the opening 60 seconds, as a long throw from Robinson was prodded towards goal by GibbsWhite and cleared off the line by McCallum. Further long throws rained in and weren’t convincingly cleared. Robinson had a header saved by Mahoney before Gibbs-White headed against the far post. On 54 minutes though, the ball finally dropped nicely and NDIAYE was on hand to tuck home the equaliser after Egan and Berge had been denied. It was wave after wave of United pressure, with Mahoney again called into action to deny Gibbs-White with another
header from Norwood’s free kick. The corner count was stacking up and after Berge had fired wide from a Gibbs-White cross, United hit the front with a wonderfully worked free kick routine that saw Fleck lay off for Norwood, he clipped in for Basham who headed into the run of ROBINSON who powered his header into the roof of the net. QPR, like in the first period, had little in the
way of adventure, but from Kakay’s scuffed effort found Dunne and his effort struck the bar before United scrambled clear. Fleck, McCallum, Robinson and Johansen were all carded as tempers boiled over late on, but the game was made safe minutes into the eight that were added, as HOURIHANE volleyed home from Berge’s inviting centre to make sure of the points.
JACK & HECKY REACT TO QPR VICTORY Scoring against a former club is always special, but Jack Robinson felt his bullet header in Friday’s win at QPR had greater
significance given what was at stake for the Blades. Despite dominating the second half, it was 1-1

when Robinson powered home his effort in front of the travelling fans, and he admits it felt extra sweet given the stick he’d coped off the home supporters at Loftus Road. Under massive pressure, United delivered the goods to leave their destiny firmly in their own hands ahead of a final day showdown against champions Fulham at Bramall Lane. And Robinson is backing the Blades to complete a remarkable turnaround under boss Paul Heckingbottom and get the result that will secure a play-off spot.
Paul Heckingbottom felt intent, and a ruthless edge were crucial factors in Friday’s win in West London. Despite dominating possession and territory in the first half, United trailed at the break, but three unanswered goals after the interval ensured the Blades took a further step towards extending their season much to the delight of the boss and his coaching staff. Jack Robinson clearly enjoyed netting against his former club, heading home after a well worked free kick routine and Heckingbottom praised

United’s intensity in the second half, despite the best efforts of home stopper Murphy Mahoney to deny them. The only negative of a near perfect evening was confirmation from Heckingbottom that skipper Billy Sharp will be sidelined for the foreseeable future having suffered a torn calf muscle in training at the beginning of the week, but understandably Sharp hasn’t given up hope of being available should United make the play-offs.
The Owls sealed a playoff slot with a 4-1 win over Portsmouth and here are some talking points from Darren Moore’s post-match press conference.
ON THE GAME Credit to the players because they showed real drive and character to come back after conceding an early goal. I said to them at half time ‘what character you have shown boys’ because it would have been easy to wilt in front of a packed house and playing under that kind of pressure. But they completely turned it around. I thought once those first 10 minutes had passed and they got some good passages of play going, they settled into their rhythm and our gameplan kicked in. ON THE CROWD What can I say, it was a special moment for me today and all the staff. To see Hillsborough packed out like that was wonderful and it was a great game played in a
great atmosphere. The fans have been with us every step of the way, they have seen a lot of ups and downs, twists and turns, and I’m really pleased we put on the performance we did and sent them home happy. I want to thank every single one of them.
ON THE PLAYERS I never like to pick out individual performances but there were some outstanding candidates out there today. It’s credit to them all as a group, they have given everything for this cause over a long, demanding season. They can be proud of themselves. We have a oneness and unity at this football club, a real connection and that has helped us through. We are in the play-offs but we haven’t achieved anything yet, we must remain focused and completely on top of our game for the games to come. ON THE PLAY-OFFS We wanted to finish in the top six and that’s what we
have achieved and now the hard work starts again. The minute we wake up in the morning, the lap tops are out, the focus is firmly on Sunderland. They are a very good side, they have changed their personnel, and Alex has done really well since taking charge. They are right in form and we know the level of the challenge but I am sure Sunderland will be saying the same thing. It’s two huge football clubs meeting in two huge games in front of full houses and I am really looking forward to what lays ahead.
ON BARRY BANNAN We’ll give it 24/48 hours which I always look to do so that’s normal. I think it was just a bit of tightness but it’s too early to say right now. What I can say is that we saw another excellent performance from Barry today. He leads from the front and we are fortunate to have a player of his quality.

Neil Campbell RIP All at Doncaster Rovers are saddened to hear of the untimely death of our former striker Neil Campbell at the age of 45. Neil spent a little more than two years with Rovers after joining in a £10,000 move from Southend United. He netted 18 goals in 79 appearances as Rovers sought to battle their way back into the Football League. Middlesbrough-born Neil started his career with York City and also played for Scarborough and Barrow. We send our deepest condolences to all those close to Neil.
This group will go down in folklore - Warne Paul Warne was quick to hail the efforts his promotion-winning squad following their crucial season defining victory over Gillingham on the last day. “I’m really pleased for the lads. We have played some really good football this year, and we really deserved the win. The outstanding emotion is relief. You’ve got to enjoy these moments. To win the cup and win promotion, it is something the club has not done before. These lads will go down in folklore. “We’ve been in a really good position for weeks. It was like the gods were against you. The lads really rallied
and we finished the season off well. “Smudge (Michael Smith) has been playing with unbelievable pain in his quad. He had to come off and Georgie (Kelly) comes on. He has been looking after himself in training as well as he can. “I told him to go out and enjoy it. It was an accomplished finish and I’m pleased for him. It sums up the resilience of our players. They are hungry for success. They are not big time. You can see the way they are celebrating, I’m really proud of them to get automatic promotion. “
