SNODGRASS Got a new job at the guillotine factory. I’ll beheading there shortly. I hate it when my wife says “Are you listening to me?!” Such a random way to start a conversation. What do you call an apology written in dots and dashes? Re-morse code. A spanish magician tells the audience he will disappear on the count of 3. He says, “Uno, dos...” and then poof... he disappeared without a tres. I just bought a new blindfold. I can’t see myself wearing it. My wife said that quilts are better than duvets.. I told her to be careful making blanket statements like that. My 4-year-old nephew has been learning Spanish since lockdown. He can’t say “please”, which I think is poor for four. My wife claims she can wax my chest hair without me feeling any pain at all. I’m worried she won’t be able to pull it off.

planning your jubilee street party stem cell donor appeal You may already be in planning mode for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, but have you considered insuring your street party? Between the 2nd and 5th of June, it’s estimated that there will be 10 million Brits hosting street parties organised across the UK, according to Country Living. It’s no surprise to see how huge an occasion this is! Not only is this a great celebration of the Queen’s 70-year reign, but it’s also a welcome opportunity to reconnect with our community after COVID. We could all do with some good news after all. There are so many things to think about when it comes to party-planning, and no more so than when it involves an entire street or community. Planning a Jubilee Street Party? The official Big Jubilee Lunch is planned for Sunday 5th June. Here are some helpful pointers to help you decide on whether to plan a street party: 1. What type of Jubilee Party do you want to hold? • If you are planning a Street Party, you will need to contact your local council. You can do this here or simply give your Council a call if it isn’t listed on their website. • If you don’t need to close the road, you can run a ‘Street Meet’ – if you live in a cul de sac, councils are
generally happy for this to go ahead without permission. Otherwise, use driveways, parking areas and front gardens •Ensure you don’t obstruct pavements. • Another option is a ‘Neighbour’s Picnic’, which can be held in the local park, the only caveat is that you cannot have music or a barbecue, but it may work well for sandwiches and cake! 2. Get your community involved from the start • Get your neighbours involved – and make sure everyone meets to discuss the Big Day beforehand. • Ask everyone to bring a dish and drink. • Consider whether you will buy plastic cutlery, or reduce waste and encourage neighbours to bring their own cutlery. • Consider classic British recipes, such as Scotch Eggs, sausage rolls, Bakewell Tart and Victoria Sponge cake. • If you are using private land, you could consider a barbecue. • If you need crockery, consider buying some mismatched plates from a charity shop, they appear much more authentic, cause less waste and the charity will benefit from your purchase. • To keep decoration costs down, get the local children involved in creating bunting, paper waving flags on straws, and paper chains. • Consider setting up a Spotify playlist and

sharing the link with your neighbour’s who can add their music to it as well. Add a few of the Queen’s favourites, such as ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’and ‘Leaning on a Lamp-post’ • And remind everyone to bring their favourite mug for a cup of tea! 3. Do I need Jubilee Street Party Insurance? As a Platinum Jubilee Street Party is a one-off event, you won’t need a risk assessment or licence for the consumption of alcohol. That doesn’t mean that there is no risk. We would encourage anyone organizing a Jubilee party to have street party insurance cover in place. The main risks are: • Burns from barbecues • Food and drink • Trips and falls • Damage to vehicles • Breakages Some councils will require proof of insurance. A spokesperson for A-Plan Insurance stated: “The Queen’s Jubilee is to celebrate her 70 years of service. Her Majesty The Queen is extremely well respected by many and is well-loved for her oath to duty, love of the people and even her sense of humour. Millions of people want to celebrate this milestone with her and we want to ensure that people are aware of the guidelines before throwing their party. As a Platinum Jubilee Street Party is a one-off event, you won’t need a risk assessment or licence for the consumption of alcohol. That doesn’t mean that there is no risk.We would encourage anyone organizing a Jubilee party to have street party insurance cover in place. We look forward to this huge, worldwide celebration.”
DKMS is urging people in Sheffield to register as blood stem cell donors to help give a second chance at life for someone with blood cancer. The charity continues to feel the aftershocks of the pandemic which devastatingly impacted the number of people signing-up. Lifesaving registrations in Sheffield have fallen by 48% compared to 2020. There is an urgent need for people to help meet the demand for donations and reverse the decline in registrations. Sadly, Sheffield follows a national trend, with just over a third (37%) of the number of people in the UK registering in the first 3 months of this year compared to last Spring. A stem cell transplant can be the last hope of survival for patients and despite the hope of a return to normalcy, a big push is needed in 2022 to help give those with blood cancer the best chance. A blood stem cell donation from
help to buy deadline near The Government’s Help to Buy scheme, designed to help first-time buyers secure a new home with just a 5% deposit, will end in March 2023. So, with just 10 months left to take advantage, what do house hunters need to know? “The Help to Buy equity loan scheme, in all its variations, has proven hugely popular with the latest data revealing that more than 346,000 homes have been purchased since its inception,” explains Tilia Homes sales director, David Thomas. “The updated version was

Only 1 in 4 people with blood cancer (and in need of a transplant) will find a matching blood stem cell donor within their own family, which means that those in need of a blood stem cell transplant on the kindness of a stranger. The family of Myla Mae Hatcher (8), from Sheffield know only too well how powerless this news makes you feel. Myla was diagnosed at just 4 years old with severe aplastic anaemia, a deficiency of all three blood cell types – white, red and platelets. The life threatening condition drained her of energy and made it difficult for her to enjoy her loves in life: swimming, gymnastics and ballet. Her best option was to find a blood stem cell match and luckily her match was found just before Christmas 2018 - she is now recovering at home. Danielle says: “My daughter, Myla’s,

blood cancer diagnosis was a huge blow, but being told that her best shot at a normal life was a stem cell transplant yet no one in our family was a match was even more heart-breaking. I never thought something like this would happen to us. No one in our family has had blood cancer. I was so scared when I realised we were reliant on a kind stranger somewhere in the world to save her life. It’s impossible to comprehend how important such a small action as swabbing your cheeks and joining the register is until it’s you, your spouse, your child, or your friends fighting for their lives. If you are eligible to sign up, please do so and give other people the second chance at life that I have been given.” Jack Pennell (25) from Sheffield donated by bone marrow donation in 2018. He heard about DKMS at a British Bone Marrow event as he regularly donates blood. A year or two after I donated, the daughter of one of the consultants at the
hospital he worked at was sadly diagnosed with the exact same condition as Myla (his recipient). Anthony Nolan were the facilitators. Jack said: “I joined the stem cell register with the hopes of saving someone’s life, but I never expected to actually be called upon! I was so delighted that I got the chance to make such a positive impact on someone else’s life. Meeting Myla made the experience all the more meaningful. The difference that a few painless hours of my life made to Myla and her family will always stay with me, there could be someone out there hoping for you to be that difference for them.” Reshna Radiven, Head of Communications and Engagement, DKMS UK, said: “This is deeply worrying. We
have witnessed a huge decrease in registrations since the pandemic took hold. With only 1 in 4 people finding a match within their family, thousands of blood cancer patients rely on the kindness of a stranger. We urgently need more people to come forward and register, because the more people we have on the blood stem cell register, the more chance there is of our patients finding that perfect match. By signing up, you could be giving someone a second chance at life”. Taking the first steps to register as a potential blood stem cell donor can be done within a few minutes from the comfort of your own home. If you are aged between 17-55 and in general good health you can sign up for a home swab kit online at dkms.org.uk
For those who are interested in owning a brand new home using a Help to Buy mortgage, there are certain criteria which must be met. They need to be over 18 and a first-time buyer, meaning they cannot own, or have ever owned, a home or land in the UK. Also, they cannot have had any form of Sharia mortgage or have inherited a property. If they are married or co-habiting, they will need to make a joint application, and the property must be their only residence. There’s a
maximum property price for the homes available under this scheme and this varies from region to region within England. David continues: “Since Help to Buy ISAs closed for new applications in November 2019, the equity loan scheme remains one of the best ways for first-time buyers to get on the property ladder as it lessens the obstacle of saving a sufficient deposit. Many of the UK’s biggest and well-known lenders have committed to offering mortgage products for
the remainder of the scheme’s duration so house hunters can be assured of choice and certainty. However, as the closing date draws nearer, we anticipate a steep rise in demand. Those looking to buy their first home with the benefits of Help to Buy will need to act decisively. Legal completions on properties being purchased with Help to Buy must meet the deadline of 31 March 2023.

studio orchestra roxy night underneath the stars The Leadmill is excited to present “Studio Orchestra” - a project focused on developing and orchestrating the original music of a selection of incredible Yorkshire-based commercial music talent, alongside Sheffield Music Hub’s exceptional 50-piece senior orchestra. The Leadmill are thrilled to have received funding support from Arts Council England on this special project that will merge various genres of music with contemporary classical music like you’ve never heard it before. Come along to The Crucible on Saturday 14th May from 8pm for an experience unlike
any other, featuring completely unique performances from: August Charles Nathaniel Short Rumbi Tauro April-Ess Curtis Charles and members of the Sheffield Children in Care Council & Care Leavers Union, who will be continuing the development of their hugely successful spoken word anthology of “The Can in Can’t”. The project has run since November last year and this performance is the culmination of a series of workshops alongside Sheffield’s own composer, George Morton (director of Sheffield’s philharmonic
orchestra) as well as Sheffield music hub’s senior orchestra and various local musicians. The Leadmill have said “We’re so excited to be leading this completely new venture that will help us to closely assist in the development of some outstanding talent that is currently based in Yorkshire, as well as being a fantastic opportunity for us to reconnect with the classical music scene in Sheffield.” Tickets are available from https://www. sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/ events/the-leadmillpresents-studioorchestra
Sheffield’s biggest ‘80s and ‘90s extravaganza returns for Xmas The city’s celebrated Roxy night is back at the 02 Academy on Saturday, December 10th. Sheffield’s biggest ‘80s/’90s Smash Hits Party will be playing hits across two decades. This is the fourth time the event has taken place with hundreds attending in fancy dress at previous events. Dean Brissett – better known as the Dean of Disco who amassed a legion of followers at his regular retro nights in the 1990s and 2000s – is set to spin the discs once more. Few people are more qualified to tackle the ‘80s and ‘90s. Dean said: “It’s going to be fantastic to return for
LIVE EVENTS AT THE PARAMOUNT
the Roxy. I entertained tens of thousands of people over the years at the likes of Flares on West Street and Carver Street and, before that, Stardust at the NMB. But nothing tops the Roxy at the 02 Academy!” The event is also set to raise hundreds for the region’s most needy kids through its support of Hallam FM’s Cash For Kids. The party is set to take place in the Roxy venue’s former Arundel Street home which is now the 02 Academy. People are encouraged to come in fancy dress with discounts for office parties available. Tickets are £10 in advance. The events last from 9pm until late.
Underneath the Stars festival has shared its final music lineup, with new artists announced for its 2022 edition, which takes place at Cinderhill Farm, Barnsley. Underneath the Star’s fans can delight as the festival announces, An Audience with Adrian Edmondson, the acclaimed actor, comedian, musician, writer and much more. Adding to an already impressive roster, the music and arts festival will now host nearly 30 artists at this year’s event, ranging from soul and indie, to brass bands, ska, Americana, folk. The final names to be added to the musical bill include: The Haggis Horns, The Bar Steward Sons of Val Doonican, Flatcap
Carnival, and further female artists, Azure Ryder, and Iona Lane. Headlining the family favourite event on Friday is Imelda May. One of Ireland’s most celebrated female artists, she joins Underneath the Stars for 2022, performing favourite hits and songs from her extraordinary album, 11 Past the Hour. Fan favourite and Barnsley’s own nightingale, Kate Rusby will perform Saturday. Often hailed as the ‘first lady of folk’, and an Underneath the Stars festival figurehead, Kate celebrates 30 years of touring this year. With a back catalogue stretching over three decades, Kate will perform a selection of highlights, including those from her most
recent albums, and from her forthcoming album 30: Many Happy Returns. Closing the weekend in spectacular fashion, Suzanne Vega, will mark the final performance. Returning for 2022, Underneath the Stars will have two covered stages beneath big top tents, so festival goers are guaranteed to enjoy classic Underneath the Stars live music performances without an umbrella. The tents will have no walls ensuring an unrestricted view of the two main stages for festival goers sat outside, and better ventilation for those inside. Plus, with a new layout and standing areas, audiences have the perfect spots for dancing in their wellies!
SUNDAY 15TH MAY 2022 SHOW STARTS 7:30PM • TICKETS £20
When Daphne’s Flight completed their last tour in 2018 and after a handful of euphoric festival performances in 2019 which garnered them an army of new followers, the stage was set for a 25th anniversary tour in 2020 with a brand new album to launch and celebrate. Then the world turned upside down. What followed were two frustrating years of postponed dates and a career sitting idle, unable to capitalise on the momentum that had been building since their 2017 reunion tour. Now the heavy cloud of the pandemic has lifted and the stage is set for a euphoric return to touring for Daphne’s Flight. With a heavy heart, Christine Collister pulled out of the band for personal reasons at the beginning of 2022 so Chris, Helen, Julie and Mel asked Miranda Sykes (Show of Hands) to join the band. The result in rehearsals couldn’t be better, the blend of personalities and musical synergy has given new energy and hope to Daphne’s and so a new chapter begins. Five individually successful solo artists in their own rights, together they create a unique and unparalleled force, empowering women of all ages, producing music that is relatable, moving and uplifting and creating a chemistry on stage that is both joyful and contagious. Ask any musician what they are most looking forward to post pandemic and the resounding answer will be performing on stage again to live audiences.

BLADES SECURE PLAY-OFF PLACE wednesday fall short What a performance, what a result! United were excellent from start to finish to brush aside Fulham and secure a fifth place finish in the Sky Bet Championship. First-half goals from Morgan Gibbs-White, Iliman Ndiaye and Sander Berge put the Blades on track, before Enda Stevens added a fourth soon after the interval to make absolutely sure. Unsurprisingly, boss Heckingbottom named an unchanged starting XI for the clash against champions Fulham. There was just the one change on the bench, with the fit-again Baldock replacing
Uremović. Fulham started brightly and enjoyed plenty of early possession, but in the 10th minute United hit front at the Bramall Lane end. Norwood’s inviting near post cross saw GIBBSWHITE rose unmarked to beat Gazzaniga with a header that went in off the near post to send the majority of the sell-out through the roof. On 21 minutes, things went from very good to excellent as Seri slipped, Berge advanced before playing in Gibbs-White and his instinctive pass was inch perfect for NDIAYE to sweep home past a helpless Gazzaniga.
Four minutes later, just when Unitedites perhaps thought things couldn’t get any better they did as Gibbs-White flicked on, Ndiaye ran and Hector before sliding the ball to BERGE who made it three. Fleck’s caution for a foul on Tete failed to dampen the atmosphere inside the stadium and before half-time Ndiaye and then Gibbs-White had efforts chalked off by the assistant referee for offside, but deep into three minutes added time, Foderingham was smartly off his line to deny Carvalho after De Cordova-Reid’s cross had found it’s way across
the area. If the first 45 minutes had started well, an excellent afternoon became boarding on perfect when STEVENS slotted in a fourth with an excellent first time finish after some excellent one-touch build-up play, involving Osborn, Fleck and lastly Berge. Shortly after the hour, Ndiaye received a deserved standing ovation from the home faithful, as Osula was handed a chance to impress off the bench. The game was in the bag, but United refused to just take the win. Hector was booked for a nasty tackle on Osula and from the resulting free-kick Egan
peeled off round the back, but his header was beaten away by Gazzaniga. The intensity in the game dropped in the last 20 minutes and subsequently Fulham had a couple of chances after Stevens was booked for hauling down Carvalho. Kebano hit the post, after Basham had got a half block on his goal bound effort, before Foderingham was at full stretch to deny Muniz with a back post header, but the three added minutes passed without incident as United’s season extends into the play-offs.
Darren Moore has issued a vote of thanks to Wednesdayites following the devastating defeat to Sunderland in the play-offs. The second leg tie at Hillsborough was played in an intense atmosphere which went flat when the Wearsiders equalised on the night in stoppage time. And Moore,
speaking in his postmatch media conference, sent a searing message to the fans. He said: “I would like to thank every single one of them because their support has been unbelievable throughout the season.“Tonight they created such an amazing atmosphere but we just couldn’t get over the line. There was very little
between the two teams over 180 minutes of football and Sunderland have taken it by the finest of margins. When we scored, the atmosphere was out of this world. We are privileged to have a support of this level. This season has been all about the here and now and it’s come to the end of the road. Our season ends here and now we regroup, refocus and plan for next season.”
Reflecting on the campaign as a whole, Moore said there are platforms in place on which to build for next season. He added: “We amassed 85 points, over 20 players scoring goals, finishing in fourth position, we have things to build on. We have a very disappointed and quiet dressing room right now as you would expect. I’ve spoken to them but I don’t think
my words will penetrate because their minds will still be on this game. From the campaign as a whole, there are a lot of positives but obviously right now it doesn’t feel like that because we have come to the end of the road. We will pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down, regroup and go again.”

The Owls suffered play-off heartbreak as a last-gasp leveller from Patrick Roberts sent Sunderland to Wembley. Lee Gregory had earlier given Wednesday the lead to wipe out the visitors’ first leg advantage but the Black Cats had the final say. Wednesday had the better of the game on the balance of play but couldn’t find enough to put the game to bed.Half chances, mainly for the Owls, punctuated the first passages of play in a rousing Hillsborough atmosphere. Sunderland, protecting their slender lead from the Stadium of Light, seemed content with attacking on the counter as Wednesday certainly saw more of the ball. George Byers threatened with an acrobatic bicycle kick that Anthony Patterson gratefully smothered before Gregory headed over the top moments later. The only other real talking point of a relatively incident-free opening
period was on 40 minutes when Josh Windass went down beneath a Dennis Cirkin challenge in the box but the penalty claims were waved away. The interval provided Wednesday the opportunity to regroup and try to fashion a way through in the second half, the pattern of which matched the first. Lynden Gooch was mightily relieved to see his interception whistle inches wide of the far post after good work down the right from Windass, with Gregory waiting to pounce. Patterson dived to gather a Sam Hutchinson effort – before the roof came
Barry Bannan wants to stay at Sheffield Wednesday and help the club win promotion back to the Championship. The Owls captain spoke to the media about his future following the Owls’ play-off semi-final defeat to Sunderland. Bannan, Wednesday’s player of the season, is contracted to the club until the summer of 2023. He played an instrumental part in the Owls finishing fourth in the regular league campaign. The Scot said: “I’ve got unfinished business, I’ve said that. I
wanted to get promoted this season, it hasn’t happened, so I see myself staying here to get promoted next season and giving it another go. I wanted to lift a trophy as captain of this club. That’s what I’ll continue to do. We’ve come up short, we were a game away from Wembley and that chance to lift that trophy, but it’s unfinished business and hopefully I’m back here to do it again next season.” Bannan has clocked up over 300 appearances since joining the club in August 2015. His swashbuckling performances in the midfield engine room have made him a cult hero on the terraces. “My

off Hillsborough as the Owls took the lead on 74 minutes. Barry Bannan unpicked the lock with a threaded ball to Marvin Johnson, whose slide-rule feed was converted by Gregory. Wednesday were in the ascendancy and poured forward in pursuit of a second, with Sunderland camped in their own half. But the one time they did break ranks, the Black Cats scored in stoppage time to seal their route to Wembley. Jack Clarke motored down the left flank in space and looked up to pick out the onrushing Roberts, who stabbed home from close range.

family are happy and I’m happy,” he said. “I love this club, I’ve touched on it a load of times and that will never change. I said at the start of the season that I was going to get this club out of this league and back to where we belong. I need to speak to my family now but I can’t see anything changing. We’re happy, I’m happy and that’s all that matters. It’s hard to take, it’s still early. I’m gutted. I wanted to get this club promoted so much and to come up short in the semi-final is heartbreaking. We’ve got to take it on the chin, we’re grown men and we have to come back fighting next season.”

ROVERS retained and released list confirmed Following the conclusion of the 2021/22 Sky Bet League One season, Rovers have confirmed their retained and released list. The club will offer fresh terms to John Bostock, Aidan Barlow and Bobby Faulkner, as well as take up options on captain Tom Anderson, along with goalkeepers Louis Jones and Ben Bottomley. Cameron John, Fejiri Okenabirhie, Dan Gardner, Branden Horton, Ed Williams, AJ Greaves and Lirak Hasani will not be offered fresh terms with their contracts coming to an end this summer. Rovers will however support Okenabirhie in his recovery from a long-term achilles injury, with the striker recently having surgery on the issue. Ben Blythe is set to complete his permanent transfer to Sky Bet Championship side Swansea City. Matt Smith, Ethan Galbraith, Josh Martin, Mipo Odubeko and Ben Jackson have all returned to their parent clubs after their loans with Rovers came to an end. Manager Gary McSheffrey said: “It’s never easy having conversations with players who are leaving the club but we have made these decisions with how we want the squad to look next season in mind. “Some of the players were unfortunate, however having had 34 players including loans with us at the end of the season, we have a clear vision of the size and make-up of the squad going forward. “We would like to thank all the players leaving us for their efforts while with the club, and wish them well for their future careers.”

I’m proud to be the captain of this historic team – Wood Richard Wood is no stranger to success with Rotherham United. The defender skippered the Millers to promotion from the third tier for the third time during the 2021/22 campaign and also lifted the Papa Johns Trophy after victory over Sutton United at Wembley. This is the first time Rotherham have won promotion and a trophy in the same season and Wood declared that he is proud to be captain, of a team that will go down in club folklore. “I’m very proud to be the captain and privileged to be at a club that has had so much success in recent seasons,” Wood told www.themillers.co.uk. “A lot of players go through their career without winning anything, so to captain this club to three promotions and a cup win is a real honour. “I feel very lucky for me and my family to be able to experience this, it is really, really special. “It’s nice to have a song about me and feel loved and appreciated by the fans. I’m proud that this team will go down in history.” “The manager always says to us about the team he was involved in and how it was remembered and that the bond that they created still exists now. “Everybody remembers them, they get welcomed back and that is something that when we finish playing, we’re hoping will be the same.” The Millers recovered
from a blip in form to secure the runners-up spot in the third tier, with 10 points from their final five games enough to see off the challenge of MK Dons. Now, Wood is hoping the Millers can harness the team spirit and togetherness the team have formed this term and take it into the Championship. “Our aim was automatic promotion but we were underdogs at the start of the campaign, but over the season we have been unbelievable,” Wood reaffirmed. “Yes, we had a blip towards the end, but the league doesn’t lie and the league shows that us and Wigan were by far and away the best teams in it. “If we can keep the core squad – the best I have played under – we’ll have a great chance of achieving our aims in the Championship. “Team spirit goes a long way and you just never know what could happen when you’re all fighting together. We’ll go up and embrace the challenge.”
