Doncaster becomes one of UK’s newest Cities! Doncaster has won city status as part of the celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee! After an incredible bid with support from residents and businesses across the borough and the region, Doncaster was given the honour along with 7 other locations. The Platinum Jubilee Civic Honours Competition required applicants to demonstrate how their unique communities and distinct local identity meant they deserved to

be awarded city status. They were also required to highlight their royal associations and cultural heritage. Team Doncaster, which is made up of the main public sector organisations and businesses across the borough, put the city status bid together to showcase the pride in Doncaster, its achievements, its future aspirations and to outline why the borough should be given this accolade. The judging panel

highlighted the following as reasons why our bid was a winning one: Community spirit Doncaster’s community spirit and resilience was demonstrated during Doncaster Floods in 2019 as the community rallied to provide relief. It has more than 70 places of worship and spirituality, with its mosques and gurdwaras serving as popup vaccination centres during the Covid-19 pandemic. Rich history - Originally

a Roman settlement, Doncaster is almost 2000 years old. Its industrial heritage is built on rail and coal, with The Flying Scotsman and The Mallard both built there. Doncaster is synonymous with the St. Leger, founded in 1776 and the oldest classic horse race in the world. Royal link - The link between the Royal Family and horseracing is central to the relationship between Doncaster and Buckingham Palace, with regular attendance and

involvement in the St Leger Festival by the Royal Family. Mayor Ros Jones said: “This is brilliant news for Doncaster. I am utterly delighted that our borough has been recognised in this way as part of the Queen’s Platinum jubilee. “To become one of the UK’s newest cities underlines our firmly held belief that we think, act and feel like a city. I’ve said for a long time that we are a city in all but name and now we can proudly say that Doncaster has achieved city status. “

UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 to deliver millions to the REGION The FA and UEFA have this week released the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 Pretournament Impact Report, confirming it’s on track to be the biggest women’s European sport event in history. The report, produced by EY, indicates the tournament is expected to deliver £54 million in economic activity to the nine Host Cities including Rotherham and Sheffield. The Host Cities are expecting 96,000 international visitors from 95 territories and there will be engagement from fans from all over the world as the international broadcast audience could reach over 250 million across more than 195 territories. Host cities will also see a positive socio-economic impact thanks to over 5,500 people taking part in the volunteer programme. The report reveals ticket sales

top award for venue

Hellaby Hall Hotel, Rotherham have been awarded the “Best Wedding Venue in Yorkshire & Humber” accolade at the 2022 I Do Wedding Awards. The awards were held at Sheffield City Hall on 17th May and recognised the top wedding suppliers for their dedication to wedding industry. The industry was heavily effected but the COVID pandemic with both couples and venues having to cancel weddings for nearly 18 months so after such a turbulent time it is a true recognition of great service to be awarded such a prestigious award. The award was voted by couples with the votes then being judged by the team from I DO Weddings who hosted the awards night. Jason Hewitt, General Manager stated “this award is truly a team effort and it means such a lot after a difficult few years for the wedding industry to be recognised for the hard work and dedication to our couples” It’s the 2nd time the hotel has won the award being awarded in 2020 but with no opportunity to celebrate the success due to the national lockdown and the closure of the hospitality industry. The awards truly were a celebration that “weddings are back” and as the hotel gears up for a busy wedding season they look forward to hosting couples special days.

for the tournament are on track to double the attendance of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 in the Netherlands that welcomed just over 240,000 fans. 51% of football fans plan to attend or watch the games that will take place up and down the country across nine English cities in 10 stadiums. Tickets are still available for matches at most venues. Prices start at £10 for adults and £5 for under 16s. Visit www.uefa. com/womenseuro/ticketing Providing a platform for greater participation in the game and community engagement, the tournament also represents a huge opportunity to drive a further step change in women’s football in England. It aims to leave a lasting legacy by inspiring the next generation of players and fans, providing

opportunities for more than 500,000 women and girls to participate and engage with football through focused efforts of legacy groups within each of the Host Cities, with many more additional opportunities nationally. UEFA’s chief of women’s football Nadine Kessler said, “This pre-tournament report proves that the impact won’t stop with the final whistle at Wembley. UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 has a unique chance to be a catalyst for change locally, nationally, across Europe and beyond. The tournament and our collective ambition will positively impact local economies and tourism, people and communities and the global visibility of the women’s game, whilst providing valuable inspiration for the future.” Councillor Julie Grocutt,

Deputy Leader at Sheffield City Council said: “Being host to major events and international tournaments like UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 always requires significant contribution from the city, but this is proof that the benefits far outweigh that contribution, we get so much more out of it. “A multi million pound boost to our local economy, thousands of new visitors from all around the world, global media audience showcasing Sheffield at its best, and of course the impact on our residents - the opportunities that events like this create, the difference they make in our communities, uniting people, instilling pride and inspiring people to follow their dreams.” Councillor Mazher Iqbal, co-chair of the committee leading on events and culture, said: “We had a taste of the

phenomenal impact of UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 at the national roadshow on Saturday – some of the biggest names in football visiting the city, live national media broadcast, hundreds of people coming in to the city centre and that’s just the beginning. It was fantastic to see our communities enjoy the day, have a go at activities,

2PM-5PM

hear from legends of the sport, and leaving inspired and hungry for more. “We couldn’t be prouder to be part of this experience, the Women’s EUROs are delivering across so many aims and we will take every opportunity to make sure Sheffield reaps all the benefits of hosting this amazing tournament.”

HI Ho Sheffield City Hall Legendary guitarist and two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jeff Beck visits Sheffield City Hall as part of a highly anticipated UK tour this Sunday (29th May). The Grammy Awardwinning guitarist will be joined by Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, Rhonda Smith on bass, and cellist Vanessa FreebairnSmith. Having cultivated one of the most influential careers in rock history, Jeff Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in

the world and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues and jazz. Over the course of his distinguished 50+ music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards, been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” and been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice – once as a member of the Yardbirds and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his 5 decades of music with an extraordinary concert at

the famous Hollywood Bowl. Beck famously replaced Eric Clapton as the Yardbirds’ lead guitarist in 1965 and later went on to form The Jeff Beck Group, which featured Rod Stewart on vocals and Ron Wood on bass. Their two albums - Truth (1968) and Beck-Ola (1969) – would become musical touchstones for hard rockers in the years to come. The constantly evolving Beck’s next move -- a power trio with bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice, which released

Beck, Bogert and Appice (1973), once again shattered people’s preconceptions of what a rock guitarist was supposed to sound like. 1985’s Flash kept Beck in the spotlight as he earned the Best Rock Instrumental Grammy for the song “Escape.” A second Grammy came with Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop with Terry Bozzio and Tony Hymas, and a third for “Dirty Mind” from the You Had It Coming album in 2001. 2009 saw the release of the platinum-selling Performing This Week… Live at Ronnie Scott’s,

which earned a Grammy for “A Day In The Life”. Beck’s astonishing 2010 solo album, Emotion & Commotion, brought about two additional Grammy Awards; Beck was nominated in 5 categories before bringing home three: Best Rock Instrumental Performance for “Hammerhead” and Best Pop Instrumental performance for “Nessun Dorma”, both from Emotion & Commotion, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for “Imagine,” his collaboration with Herbie Hancock.

His Rock ‘N’ Roll Party Honoring Les Paul album was nominated for a 2012 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. In 2016 he released Loud Hailer and in 2017 Jeff Beck: Live At The Hollywood Bowl was released, both to widespread critical acclaim.

Jeff is working on new music due in 2020 to be released worldwide by Rhino / Warner Records. Tickets for Jeff Beck’s show can be found at www.sheffieldcityhall. co.uk/.

illegal tobacco worries council reaches agreement As cost-of-living concerns grow, councils are warning that smokers could increasingly turn to illicit tobacco, which can be sold for as little as half-market price, to cut costs. The Local Government Association, which represents 350 councils across England and Wales, said people struggling with rising bills and prices could be exploited by rogue traders looking to cash in on the sale of cheap counterfeit tobacco. This would not only hamper council efforts to reduce smoking but also exacerbate existing health inequalities between low-income groups and the wider population as illicit tobacco is most readily available in poorer communities where smoking rates are disproportionately high. It also undermines the impact of tobacco tax rises, which have been found to be most effective at encouraging price-sensitive residents to quit. With the UK’s estimated 5.5 million smokers paying an average of around Ј14 for a packet of 20 cigarettes, the sale of cheap, illegal tobacco by rogue traders in shops, private homes and through social media has resulted in a loss of Ј2.3 billion in taxable income in 2019/20 as it’s

imported illegally without duty being paid, income which would otherwise fund vital public services. Illicit tobacco also plays a significant role in funding organised criminal gangs with strong links to drug dealing, money laundering and people trafficking. Ahead of the publication of the Independent review of Smokefree 2030 policies, the LGA says more investment is needed in smoking cessation services and local trading standards provision to reduce widening health disparities, organised crime, and lost revenue in public services. The LGA said the forthcoming review must recognise the role of enforcement as part of a comprehensive strategy to create smoke free England by 2030 and crackdown on illegal sales to minors and of illicit tobacco. Certainty over longterm funding for council public health services is needed to meet the 2030 ambition and eradicate the social and geographical inequalities in smoking. Local authorities’ public health grant has seen a reduction of £1 billion since 2015/16, adversely affecting councils’ ability to invest in services and functions that prevent ill health, reduce health inequalities, and support a sustainable health

and social care system, including smoking cessation and tobacco control. This could be alleviated through a ‘polluter pays’ levy on the tobacco industry. Such a levy could raise around Ј700 million a year from tobacco manufacturers to pay for stop smoking services, mass media campaigns like Stoptober, and work to stop the sale of illegal tobacco, at no cost to the public purse. Chair of the Local Government Association’s Safer Stronger Communities Board, Cllr Nesil Caliskan said: “Quitting smoking is the single most impactful thing a person can do to improve their health, and while considerable progress has been made in reducing the number of smokers, there is an increasing risk that the sale of illicit tobacco will undo the progress already made. Councils are a key player in supporting the Government’s ambition of eliminating smoking in England by 2030, through their tobacco control and other public health and support services, however it is vital this review provides certainty over long-term funding.” Trading Standards services play a vital role protecting consumers from illegitimate and dangerous products and councils continue to crackdown on illegal and counterfeit tobacco. Recent councils’ hauls have seen sniffer dogs deployed in Slough to remove 1,000 illegal cigarettes and tobacco products with a street value of more than £10,000.

Labour, Greens and the Liberal Democrats have today set out a collaborative and politically proportionate approach on how to run the council. Labour’s Cllr Terry Fox will continue as Leader of the Council and Cllr Julie Grocutt will be the Deputy Leader. This will be the first council leadership under the new committee system following last year’s referendum. Under the new system there are eight policy committees. All of the council’s political groups will be represented on the committees, in proportion to the numbers of councillors from each party elected on 5th May 2022. Sheffield City Council’s annual general meeting today decided the committees chairs with the Labour party taking four of the nine committee chairs, the Liberal Democrats three and the Green party two. The committee chairs are as follows: Strategy and Resources Chair: Leader of the Council (Cllr Terry Fox) Deputy Chair: Deputy Leader of the Council (Julie Grocutt) Finance Sub Committee Co-Chairs: Cllr Bryan Lodge and Cllr Zahira Naz Deputy Chair: Cllr Mike Levery Adult Health and Social Care Co-Chairs: Cllr Angela Argenzio and Cllr Martin Phipps Deputy Chair: Cllr Steve Ayris Communities, Parks and Leisure Chair: Cllr Richard Williams Deputy Chair: Cllr Paul

We need a number of issues sorting very quickly. We’ve got some really hard pressures on our budget that we’ve got to deal with. We’re seeing inflation at its highest for forty years, that’s the seriousness of what we’re dealing with at this moment. For me, we will be unrelenting in our pressure to make sure that we deliver. What I really want is to achieve a different way of working where we

have the openness and transparency on decisions that everybody can buy into.” Councillor Douglas Johnson, Leader of the Sheffield Green Party, said: “14 Green party councillors are ready to play their part on committees and their part in the leadership of the council as we go into a new committee system. It is fair to say that it is not always easy working together, but the outcome is we get decisions made one way or the other. That’s why we have to work cross-party and we’re committed to doing so.” Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed, Leader of the Sheffield Liberal Democrats, said: “As voted for by the people of Sheffield we have a new system and it is something I really believe in and I want to make sure it works. Coupled with this, the city is facing a serious financial situation and therefore I can reassure the residents of Sheffield that I and my 28 Lib Dem colleagues will play an active role in ensuring that the city prospers, grows and we will deal with some of the big issues such as climate change, the costof-living crisis, and local devolution. Obviously, we want to make sure the Mayor of South Yorkshire also delivers on having a bus service which is fit for Sheffield.”

water safety message Yorkshire Water is urging people visiting its reservoirs, over what is expected to be a sunny weekend, to resist the temptation of entering the water. Figures from the National Fire Chiefs Council indicate 50% of the 254 accidental drownings in 2020 involved people who were not intending to enter the water, with 71% of those deaths occurring at inland watercourses, such as reservoirs, rivers and lakes. Almost 80% of the deaths were males. To promote safety around open water, Yorkshire Water runs an education programme for schools in the region. The sessions teach children the ‘Float to Live’ technique, explains how children can keep themselves, family and friends safe around water and what to do in an emergency. The utility company has teamed up with the West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) to offer a series of virtual Water Safety live presentations aimed at Key Stage 3 and 4 students on 26 May. Teachers can book the water safety sessions via the Yorkshire Water

website. Ash Roberts, public safety and safeguarding manager, said: “People entering our reservoirs continues to be a daily occurrence, whether that be those intending to swim or people deciding the water looks inviting. As the weather improves, we see more people getting into the water who had never intended to do so when they arrived. It is vital people visiting our reservoirs this weekend don’t risk their safety by entering the water. The water in the reservoirs can cause cold water shock and reservoirs are a part of the clean water network delivering water to homes, which means there is equipment under the water that also poses a risk to people entering it.” Anyone at a Yorkshire Water reservoir who sees someone in difficulty in the water should: • Ring 999 and ask for the Fire Service immediately • Encourage the person to stay calm and to kick their legs gently to float • Don’t enter the water yourself as you may also get into difficulty

The Tramlines Trust is live - Grants for local groups now available The Tramlines Trust is live - Community organisations invited to apply for funding grants whilst Tramlines Festival also announce the return of ‘Speakers Corner’. Charities, individuals and local groups are eligible to apply for grants to support the local community. ‘The Open Arms’ returns for the second year and plays host to ‘Speakers Corner’ featuring empowering and honest poetry and spoken word curated by Otis Mensah. The Open Arms will also play host to music from Sheffield based charities, Under the Stars and Paces. Tramlines 2022 takes place from 22nd - 24th July at Hillsborough Park, 3 miles from Sheffield city

centre. The 2022 event sold out in record time with revellers looking forward to headliners including Kasabian, Sam Fender and Madness. The Tramlines Trust was announced in February as part of a new project for 2022 - ‘Tramlines in the Community’. The Tramlines Trust is now open and accepting applications with funding grants available to support a range of activities and causes. Tramlines have also announced the return of Speakers Corner which will feature a range of acts curated by hip hop poet Otis Mensah. The Tramlines Trust was announced in February and is now ready to accept applications for funding. Projects, organisations and

charities are invited to apply for grants of up to £500 or in some circumstances, £1000. Projects to be funded must be based in South Yorkshire, and successful grants will align with the Trust’s key pillars. The Trust does not require that you are a registered or existing charity or organisation. Individuals and new groups are welcome to apply, however the project must advance purely charitable purposes. The deadline for applications is Friday 1st July 2022. To find out more about the requirements and to make an application please visit https:// tramlines.org.uk/ tramlines-in-thecommunity/charity/thetramlines-trust/ Timm Cleasby, Head of

Operations for Tramlines said; ‘Tramlines has always supported a variety of charities and good causes over the years and it feels like we’re taking it to the next level with the launch of the Tramlines Trust. We will be amping up the money that we raise on site and now we’re in a position to support many more Sheffield campaigns - I can’t wait to see some fantastic projects come to fruition.’ ‘The Open Arms’ was a new venue for 2021 and after a huge success it will return in 2022. This tented stage has the feel of a local pub or small venue. The stage will play host to music from various local community projects in Sheffield, ‘Speakers Corner’ curated by Otis Mensah

and festival favourites like Barrioke (ft. Shaun WIlliamson) and Club Tropicana. The Open Arms has an emphasis on social inclusion, diversity and interactive activities. Musical groups from Under the Stars will perform. Under the Stars is a disability arts charity based in Hillsborough, just minutes from the site who have a long history of involvement with Tramlines. Also performing will be a children’s music group from PACES, a Sheffield charity and school for individuals with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders. Speakers Corner is a concept curated by former Sheffield Poet Laureate Otis Mensah and features a huge

range of emerging talent in the field of spoken word and poetry. Otis has described the stage as being, ‘dedicated to honest, vulnerable expression, showcasing poetic integrity.’ He has selected some excellent, challenging and thought provoking acts for the weekend including mellow vibes from AKA Kellz and deep lyricism

from Simon A. The full line-up for Speakers Corner also includes, Maria Nkere, Reya Saint, Lucy DK, Rae De Soleil, Mouse Teeth, Arielle Cottingham, Treasure Bloom, Brandon Grey and Jah-Mir Early. Also included in Speakers Corner is SLAMBARZ which features short sets of poetry and music from young up and coming

performers. The Hive is the hub for young writer activity in the South Yorkshire region, Slambarz is an open mic project working in partnership with The Hive to provide a space for young spoken word artists, run by Dominic Heslop also known as The 1 Devotion.

Owls confirm retained list BLADES SQUAD RESTRUCTURE The Owls have confirmed their player retention list following the conclusion of the 2021/22 season. Saido Berahino, Chey Dunkley and Sam Hutchinson will be released upon the expiry of their current contracts, while the club have exercised an option to retain Marvin Johnson. New contract offers have been made to Jack Hunt, Massimo Luongo,

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Joe Wildsmith. Loanees Harlee Dean, Lewis Gibson, Tyreece John-Jules, Florian Kamberi, Bailey PeacockFarrell, Olamide Shodipo and Jordan Storey return to their parent clubs. Sheffield Wednesday have thanked all departing players for their services and wish them well for the future.

Conversations are ongoing – Warne

has not yet finished for some clubs, Warne and his team already have a firm eye on next term. “They are never nice conversations to have,” Warne told www. themillers.co.uk after being asked about conversations with departing players from his 2021/22 squad. “We’ve thanked the lads who are outgoing for their efforts this year and now our paths will take different routes, that is the sadness of football. “It won’t be the same dressing room next year we’ll lose our

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne is targeting a number of new faces this summer, as the Millers prepare for the 2022/23 Sky Bet Championship campaign. Following on from the announcement of the 2022/23 retained list, the recruitment and management team continue to work round the clock to assemble a squad for the second tier. Although the campaign

Sheffield United have confirmed this week that it has submitted the club’s retained list to the EFL. The following players have been given free transfers following the 21-22 season: Angelo Cappello, Harvey Cullinan, Luke Freeman, David McGoldrick, Lys Mousset, Filip Uremovic The following players

loan players, as well. I think we’ll need to sign seven or eight players at least this summer and we’ve already started conversations to try and get people in. “We’re really pleased with how our recruitment team has done to get us this list, that we think contains players that can do well for us in the Championship.” “Now it is a case of trying to get them in. This early in the window, the value of a player is always higher, but the longer you go on it gets more realistic.

“We have to try and be competitive, sell them the club and what we do but fundamentally, some of the players we want are tied to other clubs, which would mean us agreeing a fee first. “It’s like if you want to buy someone’s house, they’ll probably charge you full price but if you wait until they want to move, you’ll probably get it cheaper. “It’s difficult to get players in early in the window. The list is always there and it is constantly changing.” The manager has also confirmed that as of yet,

the club have not received any offers from other clubs regarding their own in-contract players. “We haven’t had any offers for anyone,” Warne revealed. “In fairness, the season hasn’t officially finished, the Play-offs are still ongoing. “I wouldn’t think there will be any movement until at least June. I didn’t think we’d get any offers in the January window and that proved to be the case. Hopefully that will be the same in the summer.”

have had their options activated by the club and will stay for the next campaign: Harry Boyes, Kyron Gordon, Ben Osborn and Jack Robinson with players have been offered new deals at the club including Leo Gaxha, Adam Davies, Jake Eastwood, Thomas Angell, Callum Hiddleston, Louie Marsh, Josh Smith and Luther Williams.

McSheffrey delighted to secure Biggins deal

Gary McSheffrey feels Harrison Biggins will add something different to the Rovers midfield in the 2022/23 campaign. The 26-year-old became McSheffrey’s first signing of the summer transfer window after leaving Sky Bet League One side Fleetwood Town. He said: “He’s a different type of midfielder to what we’ve got, but he’s also got quality on the ball and can play in a couple of different midfield positions. “The first time I caught eyes on him live was when we played Fleetwood at home in January, and within the opening few minutes he had made several runs inbehind from midfield.

“He won corners and got his team up the pitch as well as scoring a handful of goals throughout the season for Fleetwood as well. “We identified him as a potential signing when he played against us, and he brings high energy and good legs in midfield as well as arriving into the box at the right time.” Born in Sheffield, Biggins will bring with him the desire and work ethic needed to be successful at the Eco-Power Stadium according to his new manager.

He added: “He’s a down to earth lad and from Sheffield so knows the area, he will bring the non-negotiables in terms of his work ethic and wearing his heart on his sleeve. “A big thing was getting it done early. Once he was aware of our interest he wanted to speak to us first and see what we had to offer. “He got a feel for us and I know how delighted he is to be joining us which is massive for us as a football club.”
