Orchard Square to host Sheffield’s Big Jubilee Lunch

Orchard Square, one of Sheffield’s premier shopping destination located in the heart of the city, just off Fargate, will be hosting the centre’s Big Jubilee lunch on Sunday 5th June – and everyone is invited! The Square, which offers an exciting line-up of more than 30 retail brands, independents and food and drink establishments will be offering a day of live music, entertainment and a range of fabulous lunchtime menus, offers and giveaways for visitors to enjoy in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The lunch offers on the day will include mouth-

watering selections from Sheffield Plate’s local independent street food vendors; a special cocktail menu from Terrace Goods’ bartenders, with Happy Hour on offer until later in the evening – and a special platinum meal deal option from Subway. Plus, children’s face painters and balloon twisters will be on hand, free of charge, to help keep the whole family entertained, while a local, brass-quartet band will be treating visitors to an array of classic and contemporary live music. Commenting on the event, Orchard Square Manager Shay Murray said: “We are delighted to

be hosting the Big Lunch at Orchard Square for our visitors this Sunday to help celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. “Our retailers have some fabulous offers for all to help mark the celebrations – so make sure to drop in and pay us a visit, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy some food, drink and retail therapy with us! “There’s lots happening, including a special display of classic vintage-style dresses on live window models from Blue Banana to help set a 1950s style – plus family entertainment and goody bags too. “We look forward to welcoming you and your family for this very special

day.” For those wanting to look the part ahead of the celebrations, Orchard Square hairdresser La Coupe is running a discounted offer over the Bank Holiday when booking with specific

hair stylists. For further information and to book, call the salon on 0114 2750505. Plus, Waterstone’s in the Square will be hosting a series of children’s activities across the

Bank Holiday weekend, including a ‘Colour a Crown’ activity and a crown-themed treasure hunt, which are both free to join and suitable for children from 4-9 years.

yas volunteer programme swift intiative at malin bridge What do a DJ, paranormal investigator, student, professor, scientist, lifeguard and forensic psychiatrist have in common? They all selflessly give up their own time to help others as volunteers with Yorkshire Ambulance Service. And they all star in a new book called ‘Ordinary People who do something Extraordinary’ which features over 100 portraits of the volunteers to give an insight into their lives away from the frontline. The book is the brainchild of amateur photographer Rick Corbishley who works for Yorkshire Ambulance Service dispatching volunteer Community First Responders to emergency incidents across the region. Rick is due to retire soon and wanted to leave a legacy to the hundreds of Community First Responders and Patient Transport Service (PTS) Volunteer Drivers in recognition of ‘their love for mankind that transcends the selfishness we see far too often in this world’. “Our volunteers are an inspirational group of people from all walks of life with one thing in common - they do something extraordinary. Every time they book on

duty, they put themselves on the frontline not knowing what they will face. They don’t get paid, they do it because they can and they want to,” said Rick, who works in Wakefield. “I just wanted everyone to see the human being, the character, the ordinary person who, when needed, dons a superhero cape to save a life or take someone for life-saving treatment. They may not be an actual superhero, but when you experience a loved one in cardiac arrest being given lifesaving cardiopulmonary resuscitation by one of these special people, who would say they are not superheroes?” The book has been launched to mark Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June) and highlight the role of Yorkshire Ambulance Service’s band of almost 1,300 volunteers who work as Community First Responders* and Patient Transport Service Volunteer Drivers**, many of whom had additional training during the COVID-19 pandemic to carry out alternative roles. The Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charity has secured £434,000 from NHS Charities Together to further develop the roles of our volunteers. This includes

training and equipment (including response cars and lifting kits) to enable Community First Responders to attend different types of incidents, with a particular focus on patients who have fallen. This frees up ambulances so they can attend more serious calls, ultimately helping to save more lives. Kath Lavery, Chair of Yorkshire Ambulance Service, said: “The kindness and presence of our volunteers provides much-needed comfort during difficult situations. They are enthusiastic, compassionate, flexible, resilient and motivated and it’s an absolute privilege to work alongside them. This book is a wonderful tribute to our dedicated team of volunteers and gives us a great insight into their lives away from the frontline.” The book is available for a suggested donation of £10 to cover the cost of printing. To request a copy, visit https:// www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/somethingextraordinary. Any additional monies raised will be donated to the Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charity which funds life-saving community initiatives and supports ambulance staff and volunteers when they are in need. Local voluntary group S6 Swifts have installed four crowdfunded swift nesting boxes to Malin Bridge Primary School to help reverse the population decline of this at-risk bird. Since 2021, Co-organisers Melanie Savas and Laura Lian of S6 Swifts have helped facilitate the installation of over 200 swift nest-boxes onto local residents’ homes and raise awareness of the plight of swifts using social media. “This incredible bird spends the majority of its twodecade lifespan in the air, migrating between Sheffield and other areas of northern Europe to mid-Africa and back each year without touching land once”, said Laura. “Each May, we see and hear their return, but we are hugely concerned about population decline”. Melanie added “Look out for groups of boomerang-shaped birds that appears black in the sky. Their screaming calls mean the start of summer for many people”. The Common Swift was added to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in December 2021 after it was reported that their numbers had fallen by 58% since 1995. Swifts return to the same nests to breed year after year, which are at risk of destruction due to soffit and roof replacements. It is thought that a decline in insect numbers could also be contributing to their fate. Local parents and residents generously exceeded the goal of £250 for the boxes (with a box donated by the Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club) which were made

by local company, Peak Boxes, and installed by Jan Bullett of Nest Box Installations onto the walls of this Victorian school building. Robbie McGrath, Headteacher of Malin Bridge Primary School, Henry Nottage, newly-elected Green Councillor for Hillsborough, and Ian Cracknell, Advocacy Officer at Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust also attended the installation of the nest boxes show their support for this community initiative. Robbie McGrath said: “We are really pleased to have been able to install the swift boxes and hopefully see the birds set up nests in them. The school community donated generously to the fund organised by the parents and the quality of the finished boxes is incredible. The swifts will certainly be enjoying life in a luxury home!” Cllr Henry Nottage said: “I would like to offer a massive thanks to school, the parents and everyone involved in the fundraising, supply and installation of the Swift boxes. We are seeing a distressing level of species extinction at present which is catastrophic. We must do everything we can to prevent this decline which means not just protecting our wild spaces but making our urban areas a better habitat - and Swift boxes are a great way of helping the species. I am hopeful that other projects such

as stopping the use of glyphosate, ‘no-mow May’ and rewilding small areas of ground across the city will create a thriving insect base for the Swifts and many more species. With plenty of food and great accommodation like the boxes at Malin Bridge Primary School I hope Sheffield will be a great home for them for many years to come.” Ian Cracknell said: “It’s fantastic to see local communities coming together like this to help turn around the fortunes of this much-loved bird. I would encourage anyone that would like to help to consider adding a nest box to their property and contacting their local swift group, details for which can be found on our website at wildsheffield.com/ swifts — and please do join our Swift Summit event at Sheffield Hallam University on 7 July to find out more about how you can help these amazing birds recover and thrive.” Sheffield & Rotherham Swift Summit Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust will be celebrating this incredible bird and the people taking action to help it by hosting the area’s first ever ‘Swift Summit’ from 7pm on Thursday 7 July. The event will be held at Sheffield Hallam University’s Pennine Theatre, chaired by the Trust’s Chief Executive Liz Ballard and will feature special guest speaker Sarah Gibson.

Fund set up to aid those suffering in costof-living crisis in Sheffield A fund has been set up to help those in Sheffield most affected by the rising cost-of-living and is welcoming donations from individuals or organisations who would like to support this work. The fund, set up by South Yorkshire Community Foundation (SYCF), will be open to organisations, including foodbanks, to bid for grants to help them support local people with the cost-of-living crisis. The exact size and nature of the grants will be determined by the size of the grant pot and it is hoped the grants could start to be made by summer 2022. Sheffield City Council has donated £20,000 to help kickstart the fund and SYCF will administer the funds independently.

There may be residents in Sheffield who feel able to spare some or all of their Council Tax Energy £150 rebate to donate to the fund. Cllr Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “We’re proud to live in a city where people support each other, and we have seen this more than ever over the pandemic. We know that many residents will be counting every penny at the moment, but we have also been approached by people who want to support those who are struggling more than them, so we have worked with SYCF to set up this fund. If you feel you can donate, it would be hugely appreciated and welcomed as we get through this difficult time.” Those who would like to make a donation to the fund to support people in the city should visit justgiving. com/campaign/SheffieldCostOfLivingFund Further details about the fund can be found at www.sycf.org.uk Further details of how to apply will be available from SYCF in a few weeks.

Sheffield Theatres donate over 1,000 tickets for upcoming shows to NHS staff and Sheffield charities with Tickets for Good Sheffield Theatres are celebrating the upcoming opening of their production ROCK / PAPER / SCISSORS, a new trilogy of plays by Chris Bush, with the allocation of up to 1,200 free tickets for use by NHS Staff and Sheffield charities. Sheffield Theatres have allocated tickets in this way previously including tickets for recent Sheffield Theatres productions and visiting guest shows, offered to various local charities and NHS staff. November 2021 marked the 50th anniversary of the Crucible and Studio theatres. Their anniversary season includes a theatrical first: Chris Bush’s new trilogy ROCK / PAPER / SCISSORS being

Sheffield Theatres have kindly allocated 1,000 tickets to NHS staff through the Tickets for Good platform. These performances take place between Thurs 16th June and Sat 2nd July with various times and dates available in that period. Dan Bates - Chief Executive of Sheffield Theatres said, ‘We’re so grateful to the team behind Tickets For Good, for enabling us to invite more people into our theatres who we might not ever have reached. We really felt the impact of the pandemic and are lucky to have come through it fighting,

so to offer local NHS workers a good night out at the theatre feels only right. We hope this partnership will open doors to new audiences and support new ways to bring theatre into the lives of more people.’ Tickets for Good is a ticketing company with a social purpose, they use a secure ticket delivery platform to distribute free and discounted tickets to NHS staff, key workers and charitable organisations.

Iliman receives first call up Iliman Ndiaye’s breakthrough season at United has been rewarded with a first senior call-up, with Senegal. The striker, 22, has been included in the latest squad by the African nation. Their coach is former Birmingham City and Portsmouth midfielder, Aliou Cisse. “It’s an absolute honour

George receives first Greece call up Congratulations are in order for United’s George Baldock. The wing-back has received his first international call up after he was included in Gus Poyet’s Greece squad for the upcoming quartet of

to be representing my country,” Iliman said. “I’ve been waiting for this my whole life, this is a really proud moment for me and my family who have supported and always pushed me from the day I’ve started to play football. I haven’t stopped smiling and I really can’t wait to get started.” Iliman, who has scored

seven times for the Blades this season, was born in France but has a Senegalese father, Mamadou Abdoulaye. He has been selected for two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, against Benin on Saturday 4th June and Rwanda on Tuesday 7th June.

Nations League fixtures. Greece will take on Northern Ireland at Windsor Park (2nd June) and Kosovo in Pristina (5th June), before two home games against Cyprus (9th June) and Kosovo (12th June). Baldock qualifies to play for Greece through his late grandmother, Athanasia Nasso Karpodinis, and could earn his first cap in Belfast. Following the news of his call up, George said: “I am absolutely delighted. It is a real

honour to represent Greece through my late grandmother, and this is a really proud moment, not just for me, but for my entire family. “It has been a possibility for a while, so I am really happy now to be in a position where I am available to play, and it is an exciting time ahead for me.” Baldock follows in some illustrious footsteps with United’s previous Greek internationals including the likes of Vass Borbokis, Traianos Dellas and Georgios Donis.

Barlow keen to repay McSheffrey’s trust Aidan Barlow believes having the trust of Gary McSheffrey can help bring out the best in him next season. The 22-year-old has penned a new one-year deal with the club, after making 34 appearances in the 2021/22 campaign. “Having the belief of the manager is important,

and now the challenge for me is to repay that with good performances on the pitch. “I want to nail down a position for myself and impact games with the ability I know I have, I feel like I showed I can be versatile last season but it’s important to have a natural position. “Having the manager and Copps both playing in similar positions to me in their careers helps because I can learn from them.” With the players due back in for pre-season training

He added: “There are a few weeks to go until pre-season starts but I wish it was starting today to be honest, I’m just buzzing to get back in with the lads. “It will be my first real pre-season with a club, it’s another new experience and I can spend the weeks prior to the new campaign getting myself ready. “I started to build some momentum in terms of games and became closer to the group so hopefully that can continue when we come back in.”

I’ve always had my Obituary eye on Millers move - Neil O’Donnell – Washington Rotherham United’s first summer recruit Conor Washington believes the playing style and principles of his new team perfectly align with his own. The forward – known for his energetic and committed displays at the top of the pitch will officially become a Millers player on 1st July, when his contract with Charlton Athletic expires at the end of June. Washington revealed that he’d spoke to Manager Paul Warne, as well as his coaching staff prior to his arrival, conversations which reinforced his desire to put pen-topaper on a two year deal at AESSEAL New York Stadium. “It’s great to be here, the manager and his coaching staff set their stall out very early in terms of their interest,” Washington told www. themillers.co.uk. “This has always been a football club that me and my agent thought would suit me down to the ground in terms of style of play and what the fans expect from a player. I think it’s going to be a really good fit.” “I’d heard a lot about The Gaffer, as well as Richie and Hammy, too. It was nice to put a bit of personality and faces to the names and the Zoom meetings were everything I expected them to be and more. “My vision aligned with theirs. I wanted to be back at this level, competing to play week in, week out and they think I can do that. “I still think I have a lot to learn as well and I think they can help me to push on my game further, I’m excited to get going. “The team spirit is

fantastic, both games against Charlton last season were tight and hotly contested. I thought the intensity of the lads was brilliant and I thought it suited my style down to the ground, I just hope I can get into his team and add to that.” The early days of Washington’s career will have no doubt endeared him to the Manager, having starting his journey in nonleague with St Ives Town alongside working as a postman. Since then, he has gone on to play at Sky Bet Championship level, as well as represent Northern Ireland, alongside Millers player, Shane Ferguson. As well as speaking to the coaching staff, Conor was keen to do his research on the club by speaking to current and former players and staff, including Shane himself and insisted that everyone only had positive words to say. “It shaped me as a person, I’ve been there and worked. I’ve seen the other side of life and I don’t think I take anything for granted in terms of my career. “I think that reflects itself onto the pitch with the way I play and my attitude I play with. That conversation certainly came up with the manager and it is something he valued. “I spoke to Shane when I was doing my research into the club. Everyone I spoke to, whether that be player, coach or person who has been here only had positive things to say about the club and obviously Shane is one of those people.”

Sheffield Wednesday are saddened to learn of the passing of our former player Neil O’Donnell at the age of 72. The former Scottish youth international played 47 games for the Owls between 1975 and 1977, scoring two goals. The midfielder began his professional career with Norwich City in 1966, playing 64 games for the Canaries before switching to Gillingham. When Gills boss Len Ashurst made the move to Hillsborough, O’Donnell joined him and became a regular in the Owls line-up, making his debut against the side he had just left on 5 November 1975. The Glaswegian announced his decision to retire from football through injury in January 1977 and was granted a testimonial match at Hillsborough against his former club Norwich. After hanging up his boots, O’Donnell continued to reside in Sheffield and managed Sunday League side Signpost FC, before moving into work away from football. The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Neil’s family and friends at this very difficult time.
