Sheffield PREPARES FOR Armed Forces & Veterans Day The Sheffield Armed Forces and Veterans Day will take place on Saturday 18th June and you can join the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Sioned-Mair Richards, Sheffield Armed Forces and Veterans to celebrate with a series of activities. Armed Forces and Veterans Day honours the outstanding contribution made by current members of the armed forces and by veterans of all ages. The day is an opportunity for us all to join together to pay tribute to our armed forces past, present and future. This year’s event marks
the 40th anniversary of the end of the Falklands War and the sinking of HMS Sheffield and provides a poignant opportunity to commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who lost or risked their lives. This is also a year for celebration as we mark HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and thank her for 70 years of devoted service to our nation and for her role as an ambassador for the UK to the world. Celebrate St Luke’s 50th anniversary with Night Strider 2022 by another participant aged 18 or over - and is suitable for all ages and abilities. Wheelchair users are encouraged to take part in Night Strider but due to the nature of the route and distance it is advisable they should source suitable assistance throughout the challenge. “We are delighted to be welcoming our supporters back for Night Strider in this very important year for St Luke’s,” said St Luke’s Director of Income, Media and Marketing Kathryn Burkitt. “Night Strider has become one of the best loved events in our fundraising calendar and although we held virtual versions in the past two years, there is nothing to beat the atmosphere of so many of our friends and supporters getting together with the aim of doing something very special. “Every year we find ourselves

THE St Luke’s Hospice 50th anniversary celebrations will reach their climax with Night Strider 2022! Night Strider – sponsored by Pricecheck and Gripple - is the annual nocturnal half marathon and 10k walking challenge that this year aims to raise more than £100,000 towards patient care at Sheffield’s only hospice. The 2019 challenge - the last before the Covid 19 pandemic put Night Strider on hold for two years - saw more than a thousand fully illuminated St Luke’s supporters take to the streets as darkness fell on the city on an October evening. Now booking is open and already entries are coming in for Night Strider 2022, which makes its return on October 8 and promises to be the biggest and best Night Strider yet! Starting out from Sheffield’s Peace Gardens, the walk takes in some of Sheffield’s finest locations as it heads out towards Ecclesall and Abbeydale before heading back to the city centre finish line. With no running involved, there’s plenty of time to take in the city’s best known views by moonlight as walkers embark on their twilight challenge. Either a full half marathon distance or a shorter 10k route, Night Strider is open to everybody over the age of 10 - though participants aged 10 to 17 must be registered and accompanied

more overwhelmed than ever before by the response from our supporters and we are confident that 2022 will be our biggest and best Night Strider to date! “After two years away, we know this year’s participants will enjoy striding together more than ever before, knowing that with every step they take they will be helping us raise the vital funds needed to ensure we can continue providing the very best care for all our patients and their families for another 50 years. “Come along and join the party – it’s a great family night out for anybody who wants to support a fantastic cause.” There is an Early Bird discount offer of £20 per person available until June 30 and after that the individual entry fee is £25. Maisie Smith Joins Strictly Ballroom AT THE CITY HALL
Strictly Come Dancing finalist and much loved former EastEnders star, Maisie Smith, will make her musical theatre debut later this year, as she co-stars in the 2022/23 UK tour of Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom The Musical at Sheffield City Hall in the lead female role of Fran, alongside her former Strictly dance partner, Kevin Clifton, who she waltzed her way to victory with in the Strictly Come Dancing 2019 Children In Need Special. The musical, based on the award-winning global film phenomenon of the same name, inspired the world to dance and
spawned the smash hit TV series Strictly Come Dancing. And now, new for 2022/23, this all-singing, alldancing and all-glittering show – directed and co-choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood - is set to dazzle audiences once more with this glittering cast. Kicking off in Portsmouth on 26 September, the musical will then waltz in to Sheffield this December. Maisie first wowed Strictly fans with her dancing in 2019 in the Children In Need TV special with Kevin Clifton. After winning the hearts of the public, the following year she danced her way into the
BBC One Strictly Come Dancing final. Earlier this year, Maisie joined the cast of the Strictly Live Arena Tour. She will now add another jewel to her Strictly crown, as she makes the move into musical theatre in Strictly Ballroom The Musical. Maisie Smith said: “Dancing in Strictly has been a huge part of my life, and been so much fun. I’m absolutely thrilled to be able to continue that journey in Strictly Ballroom The Musical. Not only do I get to make my musical theatre debut with my former partner in crime, Kevin Clifton, but I get to work with Craig Revel Horwood and Jason
Gilkison again too - I can’t wait.” Kevin Clifton said: “I’m beyond excited to be performing with Maisie again – she’s amazing! And I’ll finally be fulfilling my lifelong ambition to play Scott Hastings in Strictly Ballroom The Musical. When I was 10 years old I first watched the movie that would become my favourite film of all time. This is my dream role. I can’t wait to don the golden jacket and waltz all over the UK with Maisie in what’s set to be an incredible show!” Craig Revel Horwood said: “I’m delighted that the super talented Maisie Smith is joining
Kevin Clifton on the Strictly Ballroom UK tour. I can’t wait to see them dance together again. Expect some sexy moves, sizzling costumes and a simply sensational evening! I know that
they’ll both be FAB-ULOUS!”
Tickets for Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom are available now from sheffieldcityhall.co.uk
SNODGRASS I asked my wife to act like a “naughty school girl”. She forged a note from her mother saying she didn’t have to participate. A bunch of scumbags stole 20 crates of Red Bull from my local supermarket yesterday. I don’t know how they sleep at night. Me to mate, “My wife keeps pestering me to dress up as an Alice in Wonderland character!” Mate “Are you mad at her?” “Don’t you start!” Just tried changing my password to “14Days” but it was two week. My mother used to beat me as a child with a camera. I keep having flashbacks. My mum always used to say “40 is the new 30”. Lovely woman, banned from driving. My girlfriend asked me, “Did you eat my chocolate in the cupboard last night?” “No, don’t be silly” I replied, “I ate it on the sofa.”

new project delivers on dementia care fake ladder warning Families from across the UK have been able to access specialist dementia care during the first year of a new project: Closer to Home. Dementia UK launched Closer to Home in spring 2021 in partnershipwith Leeds Building Society to bring the charity’s specialist Admiral Nurses into more communities across the UK. Fundraising by the Society for the new service has already topped £400,000. During its first year, the service has provided more than 1,700 families with a designated video or phone call with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, with local knowledge of services, at a time which suits them. As dementia specialists, Admiral Nurses help families manage complex needs, considering the person living with dementia and the people around them. Their clinical, emotional and practical support enables people to live more positively with dementia. Dementia UK is expanding its Admiral Nurses team to cope with increasing demand as the pandemic has led to a backlog in diagnosis of the condition. Through Closer to Home, Dementia UK already has provided support to 1,759 families living with dementia, with a target of delivering 2,400 appointments by end of March 2024. Some of the top reasons for accessing the service include gen-
eral information about dementia, symptoms and treatments, behaviour information, and advice on care options. Admiral Nurses have been helping a growing number of families to live more positively with dementia by providing support around communication, behaviour changes, maintaining resilience, and getting a correct diagnosis. Growing number waiting for diagnosis A large proportion of service users – one in 15 - are accessing Closer to Home with suspected cases of dementia. With calls to reduce the diagnostic backlog increasing in intensity, Admiral Nurses on Closer to Home are advising people on steps they can take whilst they wait for a diagnosis. This can include advice on spotting the lessrecognised symptoms of dementia, such as hallucinations and delusions in cases of Lewy body dementia. Symptom diaries can be a valuable way for families to keep track of a relative’s condition, and documenting these symptom changes as early as possible can help GPs with their diagnosis. It can also help GPs to recognise other more treatable conditions, like infections, which can be conflated with dementia. Whilst Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia are still the top diagnoses which people are seeking support for, there are a number of other less recognised

and understood subtypes which the charity’s Closer to Home specialist nurses are providing guidance on. Subtypes like frontotemporal dementia, which is most common in people who are 40-60, and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS) or other alcohol related dementia have both been recorded in the caseloads of Closer to Home Admiral Nurses. Who is Closer to Home helping? The majority of service users to the Closer to Home service have been found to be children of parents with dementia, with people in the 51-60 bracket contacting the service most frequently. Brother and sister Aqib and Shahbanu from Surrey have already benefited from the Closer to Home service. After accessing the service, Shahbanu said: “My brother and I are very grateful to the virtual service provided by the Admiral Nurses. Following our mother’s very recent diagnosis, we have already taken great comfort in the knowledge that there is a group of dedicated, experienced, and knowledgeable nurses available. From just a single virtual call with Admiral Nurse Ruby, we found a sympathetic, and patient expert that carefully listened, empathised, counselled, and explained to us some of the basic issues about Alzheimer’s dementia and what to expect. The virtual service is a great innovation as the faceto-face component adds incredible value when talking about such sensitive issues. We very much hope to continue to access it to help us process what is happening to our mother and also be the best possible carers we can be.” Why Closer to Home is
needed Paul Edwards, Director of Clinical Services, at Dementia UK said: “Despite significant obstacles due to the pandemic, the Closer to Home service in partnership with Leeds Building Society has got off to a great start. When community services have been ravaged by Covid19 and lack of funding, families have come to rely on alternative means of support. The Closer to Home service is a helping hand to families in need, which not only acknowledges the rising cases of dementia but taps into the greater need for flexibility. After all, many families need access to meaningful virtual and local support, in the face of caring responsibilities. We’re looking to see how we can evolve this service with our partners at Leeds Building Society and reach even more families affected by dementia up until 2024. Thanks to everyone at Leeds Building Society for their passion and commitment to support families with dementia.” Richard Fearon, Chief Executive Officer at Leeds Building Society, thanked colleagues and members for their enthusiasm and generosity in backing the partnership with Dementia UK, which has already raised £400,000 for the charity. “It’s fantastic to see the impact Closer to Home is already having in helping families across the UK,” said Richard. “Dementia UK has developed creative responses to address challenges caused by the pandemic, such as virtual appointments when face to face clinics were impossible. We’re proud to have been able to help their wonderful Nurses reach more families in more communities across the UK.”

New research commissioned by the Ladder Association has raised serious concerns that unsafe and potentially dangerous ladders are being sold to unsuspecting consumers in the UK. The report found that over 80% of commercially-available telescopic ladders tested in the study failed to meet the minimum safety requirements designed to keep users safe. Worse still, the research found that over half of the failed ladders were marked and sold as ‘compliant’ in a deliberate attempt to mislead consumers. While there are manufacturers producing ladders that meet the safety standards, the study showed that a significant number of ladders available on the market - and sold by some of the country’s biggest online and trade suppliers - fall well below basic safety requirements. Working at height can be risky enough, without the additional danger of shoddy ladders - every 11 minutes in the UK, someone attends A&E after sustaining an injury involving a ladder. A fall from height can cause life changing injury, and in some cases, can even be fatal. The aim of the report is to shine a light on the very real dangers of poor-quality ladders on the market and direct consumers to purchase genuine, certified products to prevent injuries caused
by unsafe equipment. The organisations behind the report are also calling for suppliers, large and small, to take the responsibility to be more diligent when sourcing ladders to sell to customers. Telescopic leaning ladders have become much more popular in recent years, partly because they require a small storage space compared to other types of ladder; they’re lightweight and compact, and are adjustable in size and working height. To be certain they’re as safe as they should be, they should be manufactured to comply with product standard EN 131-6. It was against the most safety critical requirements of this standard that the sample products were tested at the UKAS accredited independent Test & Research Centre in Soham. Peter Bennett OBE, Executive Director of the Ladder Association, commented: “Making sure consumers are safe is our number one priority and we are committed to raising awareness of potentially harmful ladders. We are aware of below-standard ladders being sold across the UK to unsuspecting customers, and we are particularly surprised and unsettled to hear that some of our best-loved retailers are stocking potentially hazardous products. The evidence we have found of unsafe ladders being retailed in the UK is astounding. “

learners at risk of ban Learner-driver insurer Veygo has revealed that 76,336 learner drivers in the UK have points on their provisional licence, all before passing their test. This is 2,000 more than in 2021, with a rising number of learners on the road due to a significant driving test backlog. According to DVLA data, the most common offences learner drivers were penalised for are driving without the right insurance (40%), speeding (25%) and breaching the rules of their licence (15%). Of the 76,336 learner drivers with points two thirds (61%) have between 6 and 10 penalty points – putting them at higher risk of having their licence revoked. A quarter of all provisional penalty points were held for speeding offences, for which the minimum fine is £100 as well as three to six penalty points. If a driver reaches 12 or more points on their licence, they will be called to court for a judge to decide on a driving disqualification. The most common offence was driving without the proper insurance, which more than 33,000 learners had been caught out for. While nearly 13,000 learner drivers in
the UK were given points for driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, which for learner drivers might mean using their vehicle without a supervisor present or not displaying their L-plates correctly. In fact, a survey by Veygo found that almost a third (30%) of Brits are unaware that it’s possible to accrue penalty points while driving with a provisional licence. James Armstrong said: “The number of provisional points has jumped this year due to more learner drivers on the road as they await coveted driving test spots amid the pandemic backlog. It’s concerning to see learners are being caught out for breaking rules they might not understand. If you’re new to driving or a seasoned learner, it’s worth checking you have the right level of cover. Alarmingly, a third of drivers (30%) aren’t aware that it’s possible to accrue points on a provisional licence. We’d urge people that penalties can be more severe for learners and newer drivers, who can have their licences revoked if they commit an offence or exceed 6 penalty points within two years of passing their test.”

Hundreds of pubs have failed to re-open, CAMRA figures show In response to pub closure figures for 2021, the Campaign for Real Ale calls for a VAT cut, changes to business rates systems and a new online sales tax to help give our locals a boost. CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has released its pub closure statistics for 2021 and is calling for intervention from government to protect the great British pub. The figures released last week show that across Great Britain last year 290 pubs were demolished or converted to another use – an average of just over five a week. There was an uptick in the number of new pubs being built, or existing buildings being converted into pubs, averaging just over seven new pubs opening every week in the second half of the year. However, over 500 pubs were also classed as a ‘long term
Migration Matters Festival 2022 Crowds enjoy a performance at Migration Matters festival 2019 A vibrant arts festival celebrating the ‘richness of Sheffield’ returns this summer - with 50 pay-as-youfeel events. Migration Matters Festival takes place from 17 - 25 June to highlight the positive impact migration and refugees have in Sheffield, as well as bring the whole city together. Theatre, music, food and performance events featuring renowned artists are just some of the activities running in well-known venues, from The Leadmill to The Montgomery Theatre. Festival Director, Sam Holland said: “The festival shows you who is in the city. It shows you who your neighbours are and it is a lovely, eye-opening way of getting to know the richness of Sheffield. There isn’t anything more special than seeing community cohesion in action, to be meeting people of all the different places who have called Sheffield a sanctuary.” Theatre producer Sam started working on the Migration Matters Festival in 2016, the year of the Brexit referendum and Syrian refugee crisis. After the Windrush scandal and increase in hate crimes, including many assaults on East Asian people in Sheffield during the Covid-19 lockdowns, there has never been a more important time to promote unity. Sam said the festival echoes Sheffield’s history of welcoming new people from across the world, and its status as the country’s first City of Sanctuary. He added: “The festival mirrors the times when the city has come together and reaches out to the different communities who call Sheffield home, combating the division that a lot of far-right press and organisations will try to espouse.” Held during national Refugee Week, the festival celebrates different cultures and helps marginalised people to feel represented. It has grown to attract international artists, is the biggest UK festival of its kind and some 10,000 people attend festival events. All events run on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis and booking through Sheffield company Tickets For Good will open soon. Visit the festival website: migrationmattersfestival.co.uk The festival is funded by Arts Council England, the University of Sheffield and the Evan Cornish Foundation as well as the National Lottery Community Fund.
closure’ in 2021, where the building is still classed as a pub for planning purposes, but the business itself has closed or is empty and without tenants to run it, showing the lasting effects of the pandemic, and the present cost of business crisis.
The Campaign has highlighted a number of steps that Government across the UK should take in response to the report, and to the cost of living crisis, including: • An immediate cut in VAT for on trade food and drink sales, to help both businesses and consumers • Introducing an Online Sales Tax, with the funds raised directed to relieve the grossly unfair rates burden on the pub and hospitality sector • Using the upcoming Statutory Pubs Code Review to bring more tied tenants into the scope of the Pubs Code for
England and Wales; and making sure a robust Scottish Pubs Code is introduced later this year to offer protections for tied tenants in Scotland for the first time • Bringing forward the introduction of the new draught duty rate for beer and cider, confirming that it will apply to containers of 20L and over • Confirming the retention of the duty exemption for small cider makers making under 70HL of product a year
Commenting, CAMRA Chairman Nik Antona said: “These figures show that whilst there is some encouraging news about new pubs opening in 2021, there is still a big problem with pub businesses not re-opening after the pandemic. “With the cost of living crisis affecting consumers, and the cost of business crisis facing our pubs, brewers and cider
makers, we are really concerned that this positive news from our 2021 figures will turn into a nightmare report for 2022. “Pubs are not only vital employers, but they are key to community life up and down the country – bringing people together and tackling loneliness and social isolation. Government across the UK must do more to make sure pub businesses can survive the cost of business crisis, and that consumers can still support their local pubs at a time when household budgets are being squeezed. “CAMRA is doing our bit, with our Summer of Pub campaign rallying people to support their locals at every possible opportunity, but we need also need action from political leaders. The UK, Scottish and Welsh Governments must take action to safeguard the future
of the Great British pub so they can continue to play their part at the heart of community life in the years to come. “That’s why CAMRA is calling for a cut in VAT for food and drink served in pubs and the
introduction of fairer business rates systems which desperately need designing so that pubs are taxed fairly – together with an online sales tax so online businesses pay their fair share too.”
Even after a high profile campaign The Plough on Sandygate Road closed in 2021

The Club & Institute Union celebrates 160 years as Clubland’s leading organisation The CIU reaches a major milestone in its illustrious history as it celebrates its 160th anniversary on June 14. That auspicious date in 1862 saw the formation of The Working Men’s Club & Institute Union in a meeting held at the Law Amendment Society’s office in Waterloo Place and chaired by the Lord Chancellor, Lord Brougham. The inaugural joint secretaries of the new organisation were two clergymen –
the Reverend J H Rylance and the Reverend Henry Solly – with the latter becoming the first General Secretary of the Union just a few months later. Solly is undoubtedly the Union’s key historical figure as the driving force behind the formation of the CIU as an apolitical and democratic institution. George Smith, President of the Union, said: “It’s a real privilege to be President of the CIU as we reach this
impressive milestone. “For 160 years, the Union has been a force for good across UK society with our clubs providing fellowship, entertainment and education for their members, providing meeting places for local community groups as well as raising millions for charities and good causes. “We’ve faced some major challenges during our history, not least in the past couple of years with
the COVID pandemic casting a long shadow over clublife, but our clubs remain a vital part of the fabric of modern life for many people. “Of course, the Union and its clubs have undergone many changes since the early days of the club movement and no doubt we will continue to adapt. “This anniversary is the perfect time to pay tribute to the hard work of officials all over the country who continue to put
Rotherham United will host its own pop-up museum in July, celebrating the cultural heritage of the football team and its players’ achievements with an interactive exhibition and performances. The football team are lending their support to the programme alongside a diverse group of ambassadors,
including visual artist Jo Peel, educator and sportsperson Dana Abdulkarim, Radio Sheffield presenter, Sile Sabanda, and senior member of the UK Youth Parliament, Amaan Ali Saqlain.
Rotherham United backs Rotherham as Children’s Capital of Culture
Rotherham United has pledged its support to Rotherham becoming the world’s first Children’s Capital of Culture in 2025, with players hailing the move as an “exciting new chapter for Rotherham.” Demonstrating a commitment to children and young people in Rotherham, the borough has announced that it will become Children’s Capital of Culture in 2025, creating a landmark year where it will showcase itself to the world like never before. The journey officially launched in February this year, giving people a taste of what’s to come in 2025 and showing Rotherham as a cultural destination and home to a hive of creative talent. Richard Wood, captain of the Rotherham United team, explains: "Just as our team has been promoted, so has Rotherham as a town. It feels like we’re gaining a real sense of
momentum and being Children’s Capital of Culture provides a platform to really make a difference to Rotherham’s future and ensure it’s recognised for its vast potential. We’re passionate about Rotherham and its people, and bringing our communities together for 2025 will be an incredible experience. It’s an exciting new chapter for Rotherham, and we’re looking forward to seeing the programme continue to grow as excitement builds towards what will be a unique year for our borough.” As part of this year’s Children’s Capital of Culture launch programme, which has been created and designed by children and young people, a host of family-friendly events have hit Rotherham including the Arts Fest at Gulliver’s Valley, the first ever skate and art festival, pop-up exhibitions, graffiti and poetry workshops, and open mic nights.
in many hours of their own time to help their clubs prosper and build on the achievements of our predecessors in the CIU.” The Union’s General Secretary, Kenneth D Green CMD ACM, said: “The CIU was founded by vicars and members of the aristocracy but since those early days has become one of the most successful and democratic working class organisations in the world. “The Union has endured through good times and
bad thanks to our collective strength as a democratic movement which can speak to those at the highest levels of government through our involvement with the All- Party Parliamentary Group for Non-Profit Making Members Clubs to represent the interests of our clubs and their members. “And, just as in the days of my earliest predecessor as General Secretary, the Reverend Henry Solly, education remains at the core of
the CIU’s objectives with the Union’s Award in Club Management (ACM) helping to give club men and women the key skills and knowledge to run their clubs successfully. “We also provide a host of other services to help clubs prosper, including an arbitration service which enables clubs to fulfill their obligations required under their Rule Book at a minimal cost. “Above all, as has been the case since 1862, the Union is here to
give support, including financial and legal advice to clubs and their officials. “I would urge any club needing help to seek out at the earliest opportunity the expert advice available at both branch level and from the NEC and to tap into the collective knowledge that has been built up over the past 160 years of the CIU.” Information, resources and details of the CIU can be found at www. wmciu.org.uk/

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury When the players Liam BLADES PRE-SEASON PLANS come back the Palmer United’s pre-season plans ahead of the 2022/23 season are still being finalised, but there are already a number of friendlies pencilled into the schedule. At the beginning of July, Paul Heckingbottom and his squad will travel to Lisbon for a training camp, where it is likely
they will play a training game during the trip. Upon returning to the UK, United will play Lincoln City on Tuesday 12th July, in a behind closed doors fixture at a neutral venue, prior to a game against Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park on Saturday 16th July, kick-off 12.30pm.
On Tuesday 19th July, the Blades will face opposition yet to be confirmed, likely to be behind closed doors, with this fixture then followed by a doubleheader before the season kicks off. Burton Albion will host United at the Pirelli Stadium on Friday 22nd July, kick-off 7.30pm,
and on Saturday 23rd July, the Blades will head to Oakwell to face Barnsley, kick-off 3pm. Ticket news, for those games available, and match streaming information for all the aforementioned fixtures will follow, whilst details of friendlies for United’s development age
groups and women’s team will be confirmed in due course. All of the aforementioned fixtures and plans are, of course, subject to change.
It’s an exciting time to be with the Millers
Championship last term, is looking forward to another opportunity in the second tier. “I’m delighted to extend my stay,” Lindsay told www.themillers.co.uk. “I’ve been here for three seasons and had two promotions, a cup win at Wembley and a year in the Championship. I’m pleased to get it sorted and I’m now looking forward to the new season. “I’m really close to everybody, I love the club, as well as all the boys and the staff, I’ve got a great relationship with everybody, it’s a really tight group.”
“The Gaffer and all the coaching staff have helped me since I came in, it’s an exciting time to be at the football club.” “Obviously it’s nice. I’ve got two young boys, one at school and the other at nursery, so my family is settled in the area. I knew fairly on at the end of the season that it was going to happen and obviously, I’m thrilled to get it sorted.” The 26-year-old started the 2021/22 campaign brightly, but was to spend some time on the sidelines following an unfortunate injury. The form of the likes of Ollie Rathbone, Dan
Barlaser and Ben Wiles in the middle of the park made it tough for the Scot to win his place back, by his own admission. Now with his future sorted out, he is hoping to play a key part in the Millers’ latest Championship tilt. “Last season was probably the hardest I had on a personal level. I think I started really well, but picked up an injury, which meant I had to come out of the team. “In fairness to the boys they were on an unbelievable run and playing extremely well, so it was very hard to
get back in. At the end of the day, results are the most important thing, whoever has the shirt and we were obviously really successful. “Hopefully this time, back in the Championship again, I can play a huge part. Of course, I want to play in the Championship again and it’s exciting to get the opportunity to do that.” “We’re not going into the league to try and make up the numbers. We know how the disappointment felt last time and we want to give ourselves the best possible chance of achieving our aims.”
John Bostock to leave
he first signed and I was around him last season. He’s a great guy and the way he’s conducted himself throughout this process has been excellent. “He feels he can play at a higher level and doesn’t want to step into League Two which we respect, and wish him all the best from the club’s perspective. “He was really good in how he communicated, he had the club’s best interests at heart and was honest all the way through.
“We can now move forward and plan without him. We’ve brought Harrison Biggins in and he complements the lads already here to create what we believe is one of the best midfields in the division.”
Rotherham United midfielder Jamie Lindsay is optimistic for the future, after putting pen-to-paper on a new two year deal, which will keep him at AESSEAL New York Stadium until the summer of 2024. The Scottish midfielder – signed from Ross County ahead of the 2019/20 campaign – believes it is an exciting time to be with the Millers and, having helped them win promotion to the

competition starts! supports young Owl In two weeks’ time on Monday 20 June, the Owls squad will report back at Middlewood Road as the planning, preparation and hard yards begin ahead of the new campaign. Combined with the players’ return, the 2022/23 season will then come into sharper focus later that week when the fixtures are released on Thursday 23rd. The full League One schedule will be available from 9.00am. Manager Darren Moore gave an exclusive interview to swfc.co.uk late last month and spoke of the work already underway. The squad are currently away from the club for their summer breaks, all with specific fitness programmes to follow before returning to S6. Moore says as soon
first time United received an exceeds mark in five of the six criteria, after exceeding four of the criteria in the previous two seasons. The Blades were noted as exceeding criteria in the club’s overall RTC programme, as well as performance support, player development, recruitment and workforce. On the pitch, United’s RTC continued to produce players for Neil

as the boys regroup, competition for places begin with all focus on the new campaign. “We’ll look at the fixtures when they come out and when the players come back the competition starts,” the gaffer said. “They all want to play and I wouldn’t have it any other way, that’s how it should be. “We look forward to it but there’s a lot of work before we even get to that point. “When you look at the top teams from last season, we all have different styles and there’s no right or wrong way for success in this league. “Reputations hold no bearing, you have to perform. Only three can get promoted and there’s no God-given right for the former Premier League clubs to succeed.”
Redfearn’s first team squad, with Matilda Taylor stepping up at the start of the season, while Ruby Clarke, Izzy Morfitt, Jess Reavill and Chene Muir all stepped up to the first team at various stages. There was also a senior debut for defender Sam Sharrocks, while previous graduates Tamara Wilcock and Charley received more first team opportunities after debuting in the 2020/21 season.
Liam Palmer will run 10 kilometres each day throughout June to raise funds for young Owl Jude Mellon-Jameson. Three-year-old Jude, son of former Wednesday goalkeeper Arron Jameson, is undergoing treatment for neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer. Jude’s family are looking to raise £350,000 in order for the youngster to receive an experimental course of therapy in America that could significantly reduce the chances of the cancer returning, following his initial treatment in the UK. Owls defender Liam will run 10k each day in June to raise awareness and funds to help the son of his former teammate Arron. The pair played together as youngsters in the Owls academy and both made their professional debuts for Wednesday during the 2010/11 campaign. Supporters can keep up with Liam’s running challenge by following his personal TikTok account @liamjpalmer.
