CULTURAL FOCUS FOR SOUTH YORKSHIRE MAYOR Recently elected South Yorkshire Mayor, Oliver Coppard, is set to outline how cultural and creative industries are intrinsic to the region’s success at an event in Sheffield on Monday 27 June. Mayor Coppard will share his initial thoughts on future plans for the region’s thriving cultural and creative offer while attending the South Yorkshire Cultural and Creative Industries Network (SYCCIN) event at the

Showroom Workstation on Paternoster Row. The session is part of the internationally renowned Sheffield DocFest and also features a keynote speech by Clare Stewart, Interim CEO at DocFest. It is a free event open to all creative practitioners and will focus on festivals. Also speaking will be: • Claudette Whittingham, Executive Director at UK Centre for Carnival Arts (UKCCA) • Alex Deadman,

Tramlines Festival • Sara Unwin, Cultural Producer & Festival Manager at Off The Shelf • Rhonda Allen, Festival and carnival expert.

The SYCCIN is a forum open to the full spectrum of creative and cultural professionals across the region such as artists, photographers, actors, musicians, designers, publishers or producers. Representatives of the regular network events are from a range of

organisations including theatres, TV studios, games developers, publishing houses, arts venues and much more. As well as hearing from a dynamic panel of industry professionals, SYCCIN attendees will be able to share details about their creative projects, hear about upcoming funding opportunities and meet industry peers. For further information about the event and to register for a free place, visit www.

showroomworkstation. org.uk/creative-network. Anybody who would like to share a creative idea or success at the event is asked to email create@ showroomworkstation. org.uk in advance. The SYCCIN was established by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and Showroom Workstation to help nurture talent to further boost the sector and the important part it plays in the regional economy.

National Lottery cash will restore Birley Spa grounds to former glory A £97,170 restoration project is set to see the grounds of Sheffield’s historic Birley Spa Bath House restored to their former glory. Sheffield Countryside Conservation Trust were successful in their bid to The National Lottery Heritage Fund which will also include the research and celebration of the importance of the Victorian bathhouse that was originally built for Charles Herbert Pierrepont, 2nd Earl Manvers and the Lord of the Manor of Beighton in 1842. Made possible thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, the three year project aims to open up access to the grounds to a whole new generation of visitors and will train up scores of volunteers to become local history researchers. A Friends of Birley Spa Group was originally formed in 2018 with the aim of working alongside Sheffield Countryside Conservation Trust and Sheffield Parks, to look at ways to restore the grounds for community use. By 1895 the baths were failing to make a profit and only a single plunge bath remained in use. The hotel itself was closed around 1878 and it is believed Earl Manvers removed the marble from the building himself for personal use. In the 1920s and ‘30s the grounds were opened up to children and included a wishing well, sand pit, swing boats, a paddling pool and the large lake behind the house was used

for boating and fishing. When the Second World War began in 1939, the grounds were closed. The bath house, on the other hand, became a private dwelling for many years and received Grade II listed status in 1973. A restoration project in early 2000s saw a major overhaul of the bath house itself. Diane Leek, chair of Sheffield Countryside Conservation Trust, said: “We’re delighted that we’ve received this support thanks to National Lottery players. The grounds of Birley Spa have been a fantastic resource for the community in decades gone by and this money means they can be restored to their former glory and become an amazing asset once again. This far reaching project also allows us to explore the fascinating history of the area and allow members of the public and scores of schools to become a part of it.”

David Renwick, Director, England, North at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “We are thrilled to be supporting Sheffield Countryside Conservation Trust with their restoration project for Birley Spa, with money raised by National Lottery players. This project will ensure that the Trust can safeguard this important local landmark for future generations, and provide opportunities for the community to explore and celebrate the Spa’s heritage while creating stories for the future.” Pic caption: Adrian Burke, Senior Countryside Officer with Sheffield Countryside Conservation Trust (third from right), and Diane Leek, chair of the trust (third from left, front row), celebrate the news with partners on the project standing in the grounds of Birley Spa Bath House.

SHEFFIELD V SHEFFIELD TITLE SHOWDOWN AT THE ARENA

Dalton Smith will face Sam O’maison for the vacant British SuperLightweight Title at the Utilita Arena Sheffield on Saturday 6 August, live worldwide on DAZN (excluding Australia and New Zealand). Tickets for the fight will go on sale soon via www. utilitaarenasheffield.co.uk Smith (11-0, 9 KOs), one of the hottest prospects in world boxing, claimed his first pro title at Manchester Arena in May 2021 – dominating Lee Appleyard and forcing a punishing sixth-round stoppage to earn the vacant English Title. Sheffield’s most successful amateur boxer of all time added the vacant WBA Intercontinental Title to his collection by widely

outpointing Spain’s Brian Pelaez at the Worthersee Stadium in Klagenfurt, Austria four months later. The 25-year-old halted Ray Moylette in the tenth and final round of a onesided contest for the WBC International Silver Title at the First Direct Arena in Leeds in March before defending that belt with a sixth-round stoppage win over tough Argentinian Mauro Perouene earlier this month in Cardiff. O’maison (17-3-1, 7 KOs), a former English SuperLightweight Champion, shared two close contests with Luton’s Kay Prospere in 2019, drawing the first and losing the second, before returning to winning ways with a points win over Serge Ambomo in May. Dalton Smith said:

“World Championship boxing at Hillsborough’s the goal, so headlining the arena for the British Title is a great milestone along the way. “It’s a venue that has seen some huge fights - Naz, Nelson, Hatton and Brook to name a few. Now I feel it’s my turn. “Sam is heavy-handed and an awkward southpaw, but I think my best beats his best so that’s what I need to deliver. Red versus blue; it’s going to be a right atmosphere!” Sam O’maison said: “When I found out about this fight I was over the moon, becoming British Champion has been a childhood dream of mine! I know Dalton fairly well and sparred him a few times so I know this fight won’t be easy by any

means, these calibre of fights never are but I 100% believe in myself. The icing on the cake for me is that it’s a Sheffield derby at the Sheffield Arena! No doubt the atmosphere will be electric knowing Sheffield supporters! Roll on August 6.” Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman said: “It’s Sheffield vs. Sheffield for the prestigious British Super-Lightweight Title on August 6 and a chance for one of the most exciting talents in world boxing Dalton Smith to headline his first ever show in his home city. “Dalton has been flawless so far in the professional ranks and I truly believe that he is a World Champion-in-waiting. He has a tough assignment

against Sam O’maison and the arena is sure to be bouncing for an Owls vs. Blades main event. We have a host of young talent looking to make an impression on the undercard - catch it all live on DAZN. “Alongside the mega fights, DAZN are always looking to showcase the best up and coming talent around on our shows”, said

Ed Breeze, EVP Rights at DAZN. “This card has some of the most exciting young fighters in British Boxing who are destined for the very top. This fight night is not to be missed! August 6, live worldwide on DAZN.” Tickets information will follow soon via www. utilitaarenasheffield. co.uk/.

SNODGRASS I was at a restaurant and said to the waitress ”Excuse me, can I ask you something about the menu please?” She kicked me out and said “The men I please are none of your business!” I started a new job as a security guard last night. Before he left my boss told me I had to make sure I watched the office all night. I am on season 2 already but I don’t know what it has to do with security. I have just finished interviewing a young man for a job at my workplace. I asked, “Can you perform under pressure?” “I’m not sure, but I do an amazing Bohemian Rhapsody!” He replied. I always told my dad his pride would be the death of him. And sure enough, today he was eaten by his favourite lion. A man goes to a costume party with nothing but a naked woman on his back. “What are you supposed to be, then?” the host asks. “I’m a turtle,” “How can you be a turtle when all you’ve got is that naked woman on your back?” “Oh her?” He smiles. “That’s just Michelle!” My best friend was killed with a starting pistol today. Police think it may be race-related.

USEFUL NUMBERS

News, Information and Advice Changes agreed for homecare services Home care services are changing in Sheffield to provide services that better suit the needs of those who receive care in their own home. The services will focus on the best way that care can be delivered for every individual. People receiving care will have more choice about how their services are delivered and to talk about the things that really matter to them. We know that people receiving care want fewer carers and instead ones who they know and trust, and more control over their care. Carers will have more flexibility and control over how they deliver their services too. The changes to the way that these services will be delivered are being made possible by changes to the way services are commissioned. The current model risks the council not being able to meet its duties under the Care Act, so these changes are needed to reduce and eliminate these risks. Councillor Angela Argenzio, Co-Chair of the Adult Health and Social Care Policy Committee, said: “The council pays for around 40,000 hours of care every week in Sheffield. People who receive care have said that they want care that better meets their needs. “This new way of commissioning is intended to provide care that delivers what people need, with all social care support focused on helping people to live independently, live the life they want to live and have positive experiences of care. The current home care payment and charging model, based around time and task, and charging on minute by minute of care delivered, is not as effective and efficient as it could be for our customers, providers, or the council.” Councillor George Lindars-Hammond, CoChair of the Adult Health

and Social Care Policy Committee, said: “It’s vital that people receive the right care, at the right time and in the best way for them and the plans agreed today will make this happen. Care is built on understanding ‘what matters to you’, and the knowledge, experience, and views of those who receive care will be extremely important in helping to shape future services. We must make sure that we design services in such a way that we get this right for everyone. “The plans include working with providers to test the benefits of care workers being able to work shifts that will support retention and recruitment. There will also be a joint commitment to further developing and training staff so that we have a skilled workforce that is fit for the future.” What will the new model look like Under these new arrangements, each organisation that provides care will be based in a dedicated locality, benefitting from larger contracts which will deliver efficiencies and greater resilience. These neighbourhoodbased services will support the move from care provider competition to collaboration, and should reap rewards for everyone, especially with the focus on sharing best practice to continually improve services. The existing contract is due to expire in April 2023 and the council intends to begin reprocurement during Summer 2022. The new commissioning contract will be for 7 years, with an option to extend for 2 years, and a further 1 year. The full committee report can be found at democracy.sheffield. gov.uk

save water top ten sleep tips for warm weather

Yorkshire Water is reminding its customers to use water wisely in the hot weather. Emily Brady of Yorkshire Water said: “We’re expecting to see a big jump in the temperature on Friday and know that a lot of our customers will enjoy getting out in the garden to enjoy the sunshine. Being careful with how much water you use helps to make sure that there’s enough for everyone. There are some really quick and easy ways to save water whilst enjoying the weather.” Yorkshire Water’s top warm weather water tips include: • Pool your ideas! If you’re hoping to have a splash about in the paddling pool, then be savvy with your water – reuse the water by filling your watering can up from the pool and giving your plants a nice drink at the end of the day! • Perfect plants Don’t worry about watering your plants during the day – most of the water will evaporate during the hottest parts of the day, so save it till the evening when it’s nice and cool and your plants can soak it all up • Cool down A nice quick cool shower can be a wonderful treat on a hot day! • Happily Hydrated Don’t forget to drink plenty of water, especially if you’re out in the sunshine Emily continued, “As always, our teams will be working hard to get water into customers’ pipes as quickly as we can, and our leakage teams will be out and about stopping any leaks on the network. For more information on water saving, go to: www. yorkshirewater.com/yourwater/save-water/

Sleeping in the summer can be a challenge, with 36% of UK adults already struggling to get to sleep at least once on a weekly basis. When the temperature increases, our bodies find it harder to naturally relax into sleep. That’s because our body temperature needs to be lowered before drifting off. Lisa Artis at The Sleep Council* said, “Hot weather can be a nuisance when it comes to bedtime, and whilst we may celebrate the warmth of the sun and the longer, brighter days, heat can cause havoc when it comes to catching the Zzzs.” Sleep experts have put together a Summer Sleep Guide, sharing 10 top tips to help you sleep just in time for the official first day of summer on the 21st June. 1. Think About Your Sheets 100% cotton sheets are a great summer choice; naturally breathable, they are less clammy than synthetic alternatives when your body temperature rises. Another great choice for bedding is linen blend as linen benefits from having natural temperature-regulating properties and will also keep moisture away from your skin. 2. Keep Air Flowing Keep air flowing throughout your bedroom by opening windows and your bedroom door. This will give the hot air in the house somewhere to escape to, bringing down the room temperature in your bedroom. It’s also a

good idea to keep your bedroom doors open to help circulate cool air from open windows. 3. Stay Hydrated Drink plenty of water in the evening, and keep a glass by your bedside to stay hydrated if you wake up in the night. A study found that dehydration is linked to insomnia, so be sure to sip plenty of water throughout the day as a preventative measure. 4. Eat Strategically No heavy meals, caffeine, spicy foods or dairy before bed. Caffeinated drinks are known to raise our blood pressure and increase alertness, whilst spicy foods can raise your body temperature and heavy dairy-filled meals could leave you feeling uncomfortable, hot and restless. 5. Fill a Bottle with Ice Water Get your hot water bottle out and fill it with ice cold water or, if you want to make it even colder, pop it in the freezer ten minutes before bedtime and take it out just before you get into bed. 6. Choose Your Pyjamas Carefully Ditch the thick pyjamas and opt for something light and floaty instead. This will help cool down your body temperature and regulate your skin’s temperature to stop you waking up throughout the night. Clothing that exposes hands and feet is also encouraged as we lose most heat through our extremities. 7. Switch Off Your Electrics

Turn off your electronic devices an hour or two before bed and try to read or listen to music instead. Surprisingly, turning off all the plug sockets can help keep things cool - and save some energy while you’re at it. Electrical sockets kick out heat, and they could be the difference between a good night’s sleep and an uncomfortably warm night. 8. Block Out the Sun Invest in blackout curtains or blinds as lighter, longer evenings and sunny mornings can disturb your sleeping pattern. Shade is an essential component of cooling down, too. A simple hack to help you sleep in the heat is to draw curtains or blinds during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 2pm and 4pm. 9. Keep Space Between You Leaving plenty of space around yourself in bed will help keep air around you as you won’t have anyone else’s body temperature adding to yours. 10. Create a Calming Bedroom Routine and Sleeping Pattern Try going to bed at the same time every night and have an alarm set at the same time each morning. new blood donor appeal NHS Blood and Transplant are urging people in Sheffield to give blood as new targets reveal 7,520 new donors are needed to save lives over the next year. Nationally one million more blood donors are needed over the next five years to ensure patients receive the right type of blood to save and improve their lives, with a particular need for Black African, Black Caribbean and younger donors. The five-year Blood Service Strategy, published today at the start of National Blood Week, sets ambitious plans to recruit up to a million new donors and double the number of regular donors with the rarest blood types. This will ensure better matched blood types for patients in the future and reduce health inequalities. There is a particular urgency for more donors of Black African and Black Caribbean ethnicity to treat people with sickle cell. Sickle cell is the fastest growing genetic blood disorder in the UK and mostly affects people of Black heritage. It requires regular transfusions – most often with the specific blood sub type Ro. Most patients are children, and demand for Ro blood is projected to double from

2016/17 – 2025/26. Fifty five percent of Black blood donors have the Ro subtype compared to 2.4% of donors from other ethnicities. Stephen Cornes, Director of Blood Supply said: “Currently we can only meet around half of the demand for Ro blood through our existing donor base and demand for this rare blood type is rising. This means many sickle cell patients often receive less well-matched blood which, while clinically suitable, can pose a longer-term risk to patients who receive regular transfusions. We urgently need new Black African and Black Caribbean donors to come forward and donate blood. In addition to the rarest blood types, we also need 1 million new donors over the next five years of all blood types. As the NHS treats more patients, we need to grow the total number of donors too. Attend a What’s Your Blood Type event or register today and book an appointment by visiting blood. co.uk, downloading the GiveBloodNHS app or by calling 0300 123 23 23. Or if you are an existing donor and have not donated in a while, please book your next appointment.

Taking action to keep our nights out safe We all want to feel and be safe when we are out and about in bars, clubs, restaurants, and venues and in Sheffield we’re doing all we can to make sure that this is the case. Our city is one of the safest cities in the UK, but we still need to take action to raise awareness about ways to stay safe. Sheffield’s Anti-Spiking Partnership, set up in December 2021 in response to the rise in spiking reports, is taking practical action, bringing together both universities and students’ unions, Sheffield Business Improvement District (BID), South Yorkshire

Police and Sheffield City Council. Councillor Angela Argenzio, Co-Chair of Adult Social Care Committee, said: “The partnership is raising awareness of spiking in venues and its main message is that spiking is a crime and one that can have heavy consequences, with a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. “The latest data does not suggest that we have a widespread problem with drink spiking in Sheffield, but we hope that providing venues with a stock of anti-drink spiking resources will help to make their customers feel reassured that any

safety concerns are being taken seriously. 40,000 drinks toppers and 15,000 anti-spiking bottle stoppers have been made available to over 50 licensed premises across the city by the council, Sheffield BID and South Yorkshire Police. “We are reassured to see venues working hard to keep people safe on nights out and to see partners working well together on this. We are seeing increased searches at venue doors, safe places for people who need them on a night out, extra training for staff and venues are purchasing their own stocks of antispiking devices.”

As well as the toppers and stoppers, the partnership has also distributed anti-spiking printed and digital posters to venues with 1 poster aimed at perpetrators and 1 aimed at friends of those who may have been spiked. A social media campaign has been created targeted at raising awareness of the consequences of spiking and anti-spiking posters are being developed for student accommodation units. Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union have worked with Sheffield Hallam University students to produce a short anti-spiking video about the work that’s

being done in the city https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=6hJYFj_ Ay6w Through the hashtag #spikeaware, venues, partners, universities, police, and community organisations continue to share information, advice, and best practice, as well as providing support for victims of drink spiking. To support the continued awareness raising drive, antispiking posters are available for venues by contacting: DACT@ sheffield.gov.uk. The advice being given to anyone who thinks their friend has been spiked is to stay with them and keep talking

to them, seek medical assistance and call an ambulance if their condition worsens, inform a member of the venue staff and report to the police by calling 101 or 999 in an emergency, or report online. It’s important not to let them go home on their own or let them leave with someone you don’t trust and to let them know about their options for receiving support, such as Report and Support at both universities. In addition to the work of the anti-spiking partnership, Sheffield’s Ask for Angela Scheme has recently been relaunched.

Ask for Angela, which has been in Sheffield bars, clubs, and pubs since 2017 is a safety campaign that supports safe dating and that tackles sexual harassment. If someone feels unsafe on a night out, is out on a date and it’s not what they thought it would be or they are feeling uncomfortable, they can discreetly ask for help from staff by ‘asking for Angela’. Venue staff will then make sure that they get home safely. For more information about the scheme contact DACT@ sheffield.gov.uk Councillor George Lindars-Hammond, Co-Chair of Adult Social

Care committee, said: “After the restrictions that many venues faced due to Covid, it’s good to see that they are open again and Ask for Angela is up and running. Some organisations have already signed up to the scheme post restrictions and we hope that many others do soon. Those interested can contact DACT for information about how to do this. “It’s so important to enjoy a night out whilst also feeling safe and having peace of mind. That’s what this scheme is designed to do, to give reassurance and support to those who need it, when they need it.”

Rotherham town centre will once again host one of the region’s biggest celebrations for Armed Forces Day on Saturday, 25 June. Following a two-year absence due to Covid-19 restrictions, the event will return with a traditional parade starting from College Street led by The Nottinghamshire Band of The Corps of Royal Engineers accompanied by Officers, Soldiers, Cadets and Veterans. Following a parade inspection in All Saints’ Square there will be a Service of Worship and speeches to remember those who died, and to give thanks to veterans and active servicemen and women. The official Armed Forces Day flag will be lowered by veteran, Mr Frank Wells. The Mayor of Rotherham,

Councillor Tajamal Khan said: “Armed Forces Day is such an important event, acknowledging men and women across the services, those who have served or are serving today including those who supported the country through the pandemic. “It’s wonderful to see our town pay tribute to our military community, and that it is so well supported by people from across the borough. Armed Forces Day is certainly a highlight in the Rotherham calendar.” Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Rose Keenan added: “We’re really proud that Rotherham is home to one of the biggest celebrations of our military community. Armed Forces Day is a great opportunity for us to all come

together to remember and thank those who have fought for our country as well as showing our support for those currently serving. “I’m looking forward to seeing families back in the town centre enjoying the celebrations, and I know that it will be an emotional, but proud day for us all.” Visitors on the day can take advantage of free Saturday parking in all the Council’s town centre off-street car parks (excluding Clifton Park and Museum car parks) to visit the event as well as enjoy shopping and leisure activities around the centre. For more information visit www.rotherham.gov.uk/ armed-forces.

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury Owls agree Stockdale deal David Stockdale will sign for the Owls on 1 July when his contract with Wycombe Wanderers expires. The 36-year-old goalkeeper will return to his native Yorkshire, bringing a wealth of experience between the sticks. Stockdale has posted over 400 senior appearances across a near two-decade career to date, with his most recent campaign with Wycombe amongst

the most successful. The custodian saved more shots than any of his contemporaries in League One and posted the highest number of clean sheets to earn the Golden Glove. Back at the start of his career, Stockdale kicked off at Huddersfield and York as a trainee and would go on to represent a raft of clubs, including the likes of Fulham, Leicester, Hull, Brighton and Birmingham.

He linked up with the Chairboys on a permanent basis in 2020 following previous loan spells and proved an immensely popular figure at Adams Park, helping his side reach the play-off final last season. Stockdale, who earned an England international call-up in 2011, now heads north to significantly bolster the goalkeeping department at Hillsborough.

Jack Hunt signs contract extension

Palace before the move became permanent in January 2016. Hunt left the club in 2018 to join Bristol City where he made in excess of 100 appearances for the Robins before linking back up with Wednesday in 2021. A popular player amongst his teammates and the fanbase, Hunt bagged his first goals for Wednesday during our strong finish last term in victories over Cheltenham and Wimbledon at Hillsborough. Goals from the wing back

positions were something that pleased manager Darren Moore, who said:

Jack Hunt has extended his stay with the Owls following the expiry of his contract at the end of the 2021/22 campaign. The 31-year-old made 46 appearances in all competitions for Wednesday last season with his return to S6 proving a big hit. The right sided defender first moved to Hillsborough in summer 2015 on loan from Crystal

“This season, the left side in Marvin has been scoring and now Jack has scored. I am really pleased as we get them in advanced positions and ask questions of them to be in those positions as they give us a wonderful 'out.'” Hunt’s contract extension is a timely boost for the Owls, with the squad returning to Middlewood Road on last Monday for the first day of pre-season.

Lane set for more international action Bramall Lane is set to host more international football this September. With United’s historic S2 home gearing up for next month’s UEFA Women’s Euros, the Blades will also stage the upcoming men’s U21 showdown with Germany on Tuesday 27th September (7.45pm kick-off).

Miller ticks the right boxes

Miller: Rovers move comes at right time George Miller believes he is joining Rovers at the right time in his career after signing a three-year deal with the club. The new No.9 scored 12 goals while on loan at Walsall in Sky Bet League Two last season, and says The Young Lions have already secured their place at the 2023 U21 EUROS in Romania and Georgia next summer, and the date with the Germans - alongside an away fixture to Italy on Thursday 22nd September - will form a key part of England’s preparation for their ninth successive U21 finals. U21 head coach Lee Carsley, a former Blades assistant manager, said: “England-Germany is always a fixture to look forward to for any of our age groups and to be

meetings with manager Gary McSheffrey, as well as head of football operations James Coppinger, were key to securing his signature. He said: “I heard of the interest a couple of weeks ago and things happened quickly from there. I met with Gary and James and was really impressed with what they had to say. “Everything considered it felt right and like a good move for me, they were very honest in how they see me progressing here which I appreciated. playing this latest chapter at a venue as historic as Bramall Lane will make this one all the more special. “After a successful qualification campaign, it’s now time for us to get ready for an exciting summer in 2023 and there is no better preparation than fixtures against Italy and Germany.” United have played a key role in the U21s over the last year with the likes of Rhian Brewster and Morgan Gibbs-White representing the Three Lions whilst also starring for the Blades. Bramall Lane last hosted the U21s in March 2018; a 2-1 2019 U21 EURO qualifying victory over Ukraine. Tickets are on sale now via TheFA.com/tickets

Gary McSheffrey insists new striker George Miller ticks all the right boxes for what he wants in his Rovers front line. Miller has arrived at the Eco-Power Stadium on a three-year deal and will wear the number nine shirt in the coming campaign. First team manager McSheffrey and head of football operations James Coppinger had a clear

picture for the type of player they wanted to lead the attack next season. And McSheffrey says the 23-year-old is the ideal fit. He said: “We did this one a little bit different. We gave a scout a player profile for what we wanted in a striker and what we felt that we were missing with the types of qualities he needs. “George was one of the few names that came back. “We really studied it, narrowed it down to a couple, and we felt George was the one for us. “We met the player, presented to him what we

“The manager spoke about a few things but the key point was that he doesn’t want to change me, and that he wants me to get even better at what I’m already good at.” The 23-year-old took part in Rovers’ first preseason training session on Monday, and says the timing was perfect for him to settle into the group. He added: “I’m in for the first day of pre-season which is great to get

going at the same time as everyone else, we’re in it together now to try and reach our aim. “We’re all finding out about each other even the ones that were here last year, there are a few northern lads in so there’s some similar personalities. “It’s a tough league and you have to be ready to mix it. The simple things often get you results in League Two and that’s what we’ll be focusing on.”

want to do and what we expect from him and we felt that went well. “We made him feel a part of it and he loved the training ground and the stadium. “And it was nice to get the deal done quite quickly.” The primary quality McSheffrey was seeking for his front line was energy and he believes Miller brings that in spades. “It was no secret that we needed legs and willing runners,” he said. “Energy that can last 90 minutes. “Chasing lost causes is one of the non-negotiables that I love in a footballer. “Fans love it. They love to see their strikers chasing and pressing from the front is the modern game now. Can we win the ball back high up the pitch? “If you’ve got strikers that can do that you give yourself a chance. “We’re delighted to get him over the line. “There was competition, there were plenty of clubs interested in him. “For him to choose us after the initial meeting is really good and shows we’re doing things right.”

on his debut against Brazil, an incredible achievement of which he was extremely proud. Colin joined Sunderland for £16,000 in 1957 after a Bramall Lane career that saw 98 appearances and 27 goals. He was known as the ‘singing winger’, he boasted a fine career in music as well as football, coming under the wing of theatre empresario Joe Collins, father of Joan, and signing to the HMV record label and having a hit with ‘This I know’. His football career stopped him from undertaking an American tour with Sheffield band ‘The Hilltoppers’. Colin rubbed shoulders with some of the greats including The Beatles in Stockport in 1963. Colin also wore the colours of Leeds, Port Vale, Doncaster Rovers and finally Macclesfield Town before hanging up his boots. He was a

highly respected scout in later years and had a lengthy spell back with United once again in that role under Neil Warnock. Colin and his lovely wife were regular visitors to our Senior Blades events over the years where he graced them with his fantastic signing act. Colin put his incredible story into a book, appropriately titled ‘The Singing Winger’ in 2019 - an incredible tale of an incredible life. Colin was a truly wonderful, warm and engaging man who was highly regarded by those who knew him at Sheffield United FC and was one of the players who helped welcome Pele to the Club on his visit to celebrate Sheffield FC’s 150th birthday. The sincere condolences of all at Sheffield United go out to the Grainger family at this saddest of times.

RIP Colin Grainger Sheffield United Football Club is saddened by the news of the passing of former player, Colin Grainger, aged 89. Colin heralded from just outside Wakefield but began his professional career with Wrexham, initially on the ground staff before signing professional in 1950. His cousin also played for the Welsh side and introduced him to the club. National service restricted him to a handful of appearances in the Football League before United manager Reg Freeman secured his signature for the Blades. Colin earned the first of his seven England caps whilst with United and famously scored twice
