New campaign to help people outside Sheffield discover the city Sheffield’s uniqueness is being celebrated in a new campaign aimed to help people discover what makes the city such a distinct destination to live and study. Sheffield City Council and the city’s two universities have teamed up on the innovative project to promote Sheffield’s individual personality which makes it unlike any other major city in the UK. With its unusual combination of industrial heritage and expansive green space, a vibrant city centre on the edge of the Peak District National Park, and a renowned music scene coupled with a historic theatre quarter, it has

something for everyone – yet many people outside the Sheffield postcode are unaware of everything it has to offer. Sheffield is the fourthlargest city in England but is regularly voted one of the friendliest cities in the country, offering new students from across the globe a sense of belonging. It is the greenest city in the UK with 22,600 acres of green space, more than 36,000 trees and an impressive level of renewable energy production. With its thriving nightlife, popular independent scene, outdoor sporting activities and home to one of the longest and largest city-

based festivals, Tramlines, Sheffield has long been a much-loved destination for students. Around 60,000 students from over 150 countries study in Sheffield each year and many choose to remain in the city after graduating - benefitting the city culturally and economically. Now the Sheffield: Your University City campaign will be promoted to prospective students up and down the country through a creative campaign with a video sharing what people love most about the South Yorkshire city as its centrepiece. The film, which sees three prospective students

travelling on a bright yellow sofa through some of Sheffield’s most recognisable places and major annual events, will be aired on tv and shown in cinemas. Cllr Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development and Skills Policy Committee said: “Sheffield is a brilliant place to come and study, and with more than 60,000 students, we are a really popular choice. We are England’s fourth-largest city and as such there are a huge number of different things to do and see – you can go from watching a headline act at Tramlines to taking your bike out into the Peak District in the same weekend. “We might be close to other

big cities, but we have our own distinct brand here and time and time again it’s the friendly people and welcoming communities that make people want to stay – as well as our excellent nightlife of course! “It’s great to be able to work with both Sheffield Hallam University, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield City Council to promote our city and world-class educational facilities and I hope that it will encourage even more people to come and have a look round and see what’s on offer for themselves.” To find out more about the campaign, please visit: www. welcometosheffield.co.uk/ university-city.

An epic run of 34 UK concerts, coming to Sheffield City Hall on 27 April 2023. Tickets for the show go on sale 24 June 2022 at 9am, via www. sheffieldcityhall. co.uk. Mike + The Mechanics are Genesis founding member Mike Rutherford (Guitar) – one of the UK’s most prolific R&B singer,

Tim shares vocal duties with Roachford and they both add a new soulful dimension to the band’s already established sound. The ‘Refueld!’ Tour in 2023, will include tracks from their

critically acclaimed latest album ‘Out of the Blue’ plus some Genesis. Their ninth album features reworkings of some of the band’s best loved tracks, including ‘The Living Years’ and the unforgettable ‘Over My Shoulder’, along with three brand new songs: ‘Out Of The Blue’, ‘One Way’, ‘What Would You Do’.

SNODGRASS My wife has just fell over and dropped a basket full of freshly ironed clothes. I just sat back and watched it all unfold! My parents just told me they would love another child! “Great, I would love a little brother” I said “That’s not what we meant!” They replied I once met a Korean martial artist who was giving away free chocolate bars. I asked him if I could take two. He said “No! You can Taekwondo.” I always try to live every day as if its my last... Staying in bed calling a nurse to bring me food! I recently bought a new toilet brush. Long story short; I’m going back to paper. Three years ago my doctor told me I was going deaf. I haven’t heard from him since. My old man really wanted to make paper planes with him. Eventually I folded. I can’t believe I got fired from the calendar factory. All I did was take a day off.

Tickets for the show went on general sale last week and are available via www. sheffieldcityhall. co.uk.

My boss told me to have a good day. So I went home.

USEFUL NUMBERS

News, Information and Advice expert tips for saving money With the substantial increase in household bills soaring across the UK, it is evident that people up and down the country are looking for tips and tricks in the hopes of reducing and limiting their expenditure. Experts have revealed the best tips and tricks on how to think smart and be a savvy saver when it comes to reducing the cost of household bills. Water Unfortunately, water bills are one of, if not the, highest costs in household bills which is why it’s essential to take caution when doing day-to-day tasks that you may not even notice are having a significant impact on the bill. There are many practical things you can do as a homeowner to lessen your water bill: •Swap baths for showers – opting to reduce the number of baths a household has and swapping for a shower can greatly impact the water usage a household might utilise. A shorter shower uses a third of the water it would use to fill a bath, so even if cutting out baths, in general, is a no-go, try to limit it to just once or twice a week. • Unneeded running taps – leaving the taps to run whilst doing short tasks, like brushing your teeth or shaving, can pose largely on water usage when considering it is an everyday task. Turning off the tap while doing these routines will reduce the amount of wasted water. • Small wash cycles – by doing large loads of laundry instead of completing numerous half-cycle washes per week, you will save enormous amounts of wasted water and energy. Not only is washing larger cycles more efficient but washing at a reduced temperature will also help reduce energy bills. • Using a dishwasher instead of washing up in the sink – while washing and rinsing small items in the sink may feel like you’re reducing amounts of water, it instead causes

litres of water to be wasted, which is why its more efficient to pop any dirty dishes into the dishwasher, wait till its fully loaded and allow a full cycle wash. Be careful not to overuse the machine by half-filling it as this is also ineffective. • Look at getting a water meter – This may not suit every household, which is why it’s important to look into as it could save you money. Moneysaving expert and bill-reducing icon Martin Lewis suggests looking into it if you have “more bedrooms in your home than people or the same number”. Gas Despite homeowners thinking there is nothing that can be done about gas prices, there are, in fact, certain steps that you can take to reduce this bill: • Install a smart thermostat – there are many advantages to installing a smart thermostat. Due to the technology used inside this gadget, it can understand household patterns in usage and adjust the temperature based on when the home is occupied and not occupied. This effectively will reduce the time that heating and cooling systems are turned on, therefore, reducing the amount of gas. • Insulate your home – if you struggle to stay warmer in the colder months, it might be worth investing in properly insulating your home. Loft insulation is a great place to start as heat rises, and in a house with no effective insulation, the main exit of heat will be via its roof. Although this is a more costly upfront price, it will pay for itself in the long run. • DIY heavy curtains – if you want to take a more hands-on approach and avoid large sums of money, DIY some heavy curtains to keep heat in during the colder months. This is an excellent way of insulating your home if you have small bedrooms

that let out a lot of heat. • Hang your washing out – it sounds obvious, but many homeowners are opting for the fast option when it comes to drying clothes and putting them in the dryer. As summer is now upon us, making the conscious effort to hang up your washing in the garden, balcony, or on an inside airer will surely see you saving. Electricity In a world where gadgets, TVs and other household appliances are used all day, there is no doubt that electricity bills tend to remain high. By taking small and economic steps, homeowners can reduce these bills greatly: • Turn off standby appliances – You will reduce wasted electricity by turning off appliances that are not in active use or aren’t used at all. It is also noted that purchasing plug sockets that can be turned on/off via your phone are great options if you spend a lot of time out of the house. • Turn off lights – as easy as it is to leave lights on and forget to turn them off, try to consciously turn off the lights when leaving a room or when you could use natural light instead. • Use stand-alone devices – using stand-alone devices such as laptops, tablets and phones as opposed to desktop computers; you will reduce your daily power consumption. This can also increase efficiency in work as these devices can be used anywhere at any time. • Be more efficient when cooking – by using lids on boiling pans and using the right ring on the hob, and utilising the correct kitchenware when cooking, you are more likely to speed up the length of time that the appliance is on for.

Yorkshire-based foster parents from Foster Care Associates (FCA) are calling for more people to come forward to support unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASCs) this Refugee Week. The theme of Refugee Week 2022 (20 - 26 June 22) is ‘healing’, which according to the event site ‘will be a celebration of community, mutual care, and the human ability to start again.’ According to the government’s most recent report on looked after children in the UK there were more than 4000 UASCs in the UK in 2021. There has been a 56% increase in asylum seekers - both adults and children - to the UK since 2020, with 55,146 people applying. The highest figure seen in almost 20 years, since over 60,000 applied in 2003. Melanie Murphy is the Registered Manager at FCA Yorkshire. She said: “This year we wanted to shine a light on some of our amazing foster parents who have taken care of unaccompanied asylum seeking children. We find that there can be a huge stigma attached to children who are seeking refuge, when really, they have endured hardships that we can barely start to understand. Our hope is that by opening up the conversation, and showing the healing impact that foster parents can have on these young people, we might start to see more people come forward and want to make that difference.” For those interested, there are events happening across the country this Refugee Week. To find out more about supporting unaccompanied asylum seeking children in Yorkshire, you can visit FCA’s website or call the team on 0800 023 4562.

A blast from the past gives a massive boost to St Luke’s CLASSIC ‘70s and 80s charity rock band MAM Tour proved a blast from the past could add a real boost to the present as they raised more than £1,000 for St Luke’s Hospice. The Sheffield band – the name stands for Middle Aged Men on Tour – donate 100 per cent of their fees to charity. And one of their most recent gigs saw them raise a fantastic £1,269 for patient care at Sheffield’s only hospice. “Several members of the band have seen at first hand the amazing work St Luke’s do and they have

cared for family members and friends of ours in the past,” said band member Steve Wilkinson. We felt strongly that we wanted to give something back and help St Luke’s continue that work for others.” St Luke’s Fundraising Account Manager Matthew Sheridan commented: “We are so pleased that MAM Tour thought of us and raised such a great amount of money. “This is our 50th anniversary year and it’s great to see groups like MAM Tour joining us as we celebrate and being so generous in their support. They can be assured that every penny of this great donation really will make a massive difference to the lives of all our patients and their families.”

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury boyes extends contract darren moore’s thoughts Promising youngster Harry Boyes has committed his longterm future to the Blades and will further his development with his first EFL loan next season. The 20-year-old has signed a new three-year deal at Bramall Lane and has now subsequently completed a seasonlong loan switch to newly promoted Forest Green Rovers in Sky Bet

League One. Boyes has impressed during his progression through the development age groups at United and enjoyed a hugely successful loan spell with Solihull Moors last season which ended with Neal Ardley’s side narrowly missing out on promotion to League Two, as they lost to Grimsby Town in the play-off final. The versatile leftsided operator made

36 appearances in all competitions for the Damson Park outfit, scoring five goals in the process which was enough to see him named in the National League team of the season. Boss Paul Heckingbottom is delighted to have tied down Boyes and believes this is a move that should benefit all parties in the coming months. He remarked: “Harry went

out and performed well in the National League last season and that has prompted a number of EFL clubs to enquire about taking him on-loan this summer. We feel this is a great opportunity for him at Forest Green in League One and we are delighted to finalise the deal, having seen him commit his long-term future to United.”

hecky upbeat

semi-final heartbreak. And whilst conceding there is interest in some of his playing staff from elsewhere as he’d expect at this stage of the summer, he remains determined add further quality to the ranks in the coming weeks. Max Lowe and Oli Burke, who both ended last season away from Bramall Lane, were two players who Heckingbottom discussed, but at the moment, the manager is looking forward to working with the pair in

the early stages of preseason. Speaking following the release of the Sky Bet Championship fixtures on Thursday morning, the manager says preparations can now commence. The Blades acknowledged the scheduled will be ‘tweaked’ because of United’s opening fixture at Watford taking place on a Monday evening having been selected by Sky Sports. United are at home on Boxing Day which pleases the

manager, who believes the fans will enjoy a night in the capital over the festive period too, but aside from that Heckingbottom is focused on what promises to be another gruelling campaign. Rhian Brewster trained with the group on Thursday morning and the United boss is looking forward to working with greater numbers next week before welcoming his international players back prior to the trip to Portugal next month.

Football League through to the most recent debutant Reo Griffiths and beyond into future seasons. The launch of the project comes alongside the creation of a new Former Players’ Association as the club seeks to build a strong community among the ex-professionals. “We are determined to strengthen the links to our history and celebrate all those that have played a part on the pitch,” Rovers’ chief operating officer Shaun Lockwood said.

Paul Heckingbottom believes he needs to add to his squad prior to letting players leave and insists any outgoings must make financial sense for the Blades. When questioned about the prospect of allowing players to depart, Heckingbottom was adamant his immediate thought and focus was forming a squad that would be capable of challenging at the top end of the second tier after last term’s play-off

The Owls’ pre-season is underway, with five new faces on the way to Hillsborough. Here, manager Darren Moore issues an exclusive update from Middlewood Road. ON MICHAEL SMITH & MICHAEL IHIEKWE For me they will bring a wealth of experience and a wealth of leadership. One will bring goal prowess and a better ability to help you win games and the other will bring a solidity to your backline. We have strengthened both boxes in terms of ability, size and presence. It does what it says on the tin if you look at their playing records over recent seasons, the stats speak for themselves. They have a robustness and fitness to their game which is exceptional. ON BEN HENEGHAN, DAVD STOCKDALE & WILL VAULKS Good experience again, which is important. I think Ben will be an excellent signing for us, I really do. Ben is someone I have known for two or three years now and when I heard of his availability I wanted to bring him in straight away. With the centre back situation and the players who left at the end of last season, we knew it was an area that needed addressing and Ben is a great acquisition. With David, he’s been there, done that and has that knowhow. I didn’t want to go down the route of a loan goalkeeper this time, I wanted our own player and I’m delighted we’ve managed to do that. With Will, once we knew he was available, we fought off interest from other clubs to get him here. I’m delighted to

have him in the building, he’s someone of good experience with the right character and the right ilk. In terms of the dimensions and dynamics of the team, Will is an excellent addition. BATTLE FOR THE GLOVES Cameron Dawson has come back to us on the back of a 46-game loan that helped Exeter to promotion into our division. We have a different Cameron Dawson back and I’m really pleased with that. Both goalkeepers are in different places in their careers and both will be pushing each other every step of the way in terms of fighting for that number one spot. It will be a battle for the gloves, 100%. THE BUSINESS SO FAR I am really pleased overall. We know what we want, we’re not just going for anyone and everyone. They are specific targets. Last season the stats and figures were a real improvement at the club and to keep improving you have to keep getting better. We have looked at the dynamics of the team and some of the shortcomings and tried to correct them whilst maintaining our identity. We have only added players who tick the right boxes. ON EARLY SIGNINGS We have managed to get five over the line nice and early and now preseason will be all about getting them settled and integrating them into the camp. The quicker you bring players in, the longer you get to work with them in preparation for the start of the season and that is a big positive. ON PORTSMOUTH It’s a really exciting

start to the season with a home game against Portsmouth. We’re at Hillsborough for the first time in a few years on the first day so that’s great for our supporters. It’s a great fixture for both clubs and the division. It’s a mouthwatering prospect for both clubs really, the start of the season with two big clubs going head-to-head on the first day. Portsmouth are a well-supported club, they will bring plenty of fans up here, we will have new players on show in front of a big crowd in a terrific atmosphere. But first things first and right now it’s all about pre-season and putting all the right preparations in place. ON PORTUGAL Last year we went to Wales quite early on but this year we can do it differently and we decided to have a couple of weeks here at our training ground before heading out to Portugal for some warm weather

training. The new players will be able to get a feel for the place here first while getting that base level fitness in. Then we go to Portugal and a training camp where you are effectively locked away in-house and you can implement some really good work. There’s usually double sessions in pre-season at home but in Portugal you can get three sessions in, you get more dedicated time to implement things in a different environment. READY TO GO We’ve got six weeks of pre-season but that will be gone in the blink of an eye and before you know it we’ll be playing Portsmouth on that opening day. It doesn’t seem two minutes since the last campaign finished but here we are again talking about the new one. It’s been a quick summer but we’re back, our work has started and we’re all really looking forward to the new campaign.

2017, where he enjoyed his most prolific spell to date, spending two years at Priestfield Stadium with Gillingham. He hit an impressive 40 goals in 97 appearances in Kent, with his fine form attracting the interest of Sky Bet Championship side Hull City. Eaves signed for the Tigers at the start of the 2019/20 campaign, following the expiration of his contract with Gills. During his time at MKM Stadium, he helped the Tigers to the Sky Bet League One title in 2020/21 and to retain their second tier status the following year. The 6ft 3in striker was up at Roundwood yesterday to meet his new teammates before putting pen-topaper on his new three year deal with the Millers.

Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the signing of striker Tom Eaves from Hull City, who has penned a threeyear-deal to become Paul Warne’s third signing of the 2022/23 summer transfer window. The 30-year-old forward arrives in South Yorkshire for the second time having enjoyed a short loan spell with he Millers in 2013. Eaves came through the ranks at Oldham Athletic, before being snapped up by Bolton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee in 2010 before a switch to Yeovil Town, scoring seven times in 48 appearances at Huish Park.
