Donations urgently needed at Sheffield Blood Donor Centre to help stop summer fall in stock NHS Blood and Transplant urgently needs blood donations at the Sheffield Donor Centre. Blood stocks are falling due to higher levels of staff and donor illness, mainly linked to the rise in coronavirus cases. Donations are also lower in the summer, when people are busy with holidays and events. While many sessions held in community venues such as church halls are full, the larger blood
donor centres in cities currently have unfilled appointments. The Sheffield Donor Centre donor centre is only 44% full next week [w/c July 11]. There are around 4.5 days of blood stock nationally, whereas NHSBT normally looks to hold six days. Stocks have fallen because hospitals are requesting more blood than is currently being donated. The demand for blood is back to pre-pandemic levels as
hospitals catch up on the backlog of routine activity that was postponed. Hospitals are still receiving all the blood they need but more donations are needed now, to ensure stocks do not fall further. The blood types most in demand are O positive, O negative and B negative. Each blood donation can save or improve up to three lives. Blood is used to treat patients with cancer, blood disorders and those suffering medical trauma or
undergoing surgery. Mark Chambers, NHSBT Assistant Director of Planning, said: “We are still supplying hospitals with all the blood they need. However we need to stop the decline in blood stocks now. “We urgently need more people to make appointments to give blood at our Sheffield Donor Centre. “If you are one of our amazing donors in Sheffield please make and keep an appointment.
“And if you have never donated before, now is a great time to make your first donation. You will be helping the NHS at an important time. “Every appointment counts.” Sheffield has a permanent blood donor on Church Street in the city centre, close to the Cathedral. Visit www.blood.co.uk, call 0300 123 23 23 or download the NHS Give Blood app.

Vote Doncaster for the home of Great British Railways Doncaster has made it to the six-strong shortlist to become the headquarters of Great British Rail. Following strong applications from 42 local authorities across Britain, the city of Doncaster is now one of just a handful remaining before a public vote. The public can now vote on which location they think should be home to the new Great British Rail headquarters and the result of this vote will be used to measure the level of public support for each location and will be considered as part of final decision making. Doncaster can also expect visits from Government ministers and GBR representatives as part of the process which takes place from now until 15 August 2022.
I firmly believe that Doncaster should be the home of Great British Railways, in the heart of South Yorkshire and gateway to the North, we would make the perfect home for GBR and the ideal location from which to run this countries railways. Our bid is strong and demonstrates all we have to offer, including our rich rail history, value for money, excellent connectivity and links with the rail sector not to mention our new found city status! “We’ve already had an over-
whelming level of public support for our bid, but now we need the whole of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, the North and beyond to support us by voting for Doncaster. Come on Doncaster, we can do it!” Doncaster joins Birmingham, Crewe, Derby, Newcastle and York on the shortlist. Read Doncaster’s submission here https://gbrtt.co.uk/wp-content/ uploads/2022/07/Doncaster. pdf to find out why Doncaster is the ideal location and cast your vote for Doncaster now.
Members of the public are encouraged to visit the following web link: https://consultations.gbrtt.co.uk/greatbritish-railways/gbr-hq-vote/ consultation/intro/ and vote for DONCASTER.

Women of the World Festival is taking place in Rotherham
Rotherham Council has announced the programme for the first ever WOW - Women of the World Festival in Rotherham, taking place this month. Led by Founder Jude Kelly, WOW Festivals are the world’s most comprehensive festivals celebrating women, girls and non-binary people. Launched in 2010, WOW Festivals have now taken place in more than 30 locations in six continents, reaching more than three million people to date. WOW Rotherham is organised by Rotherham Council and Flux Rotherham in partnership with the WOW Foundation, the UK based charity that runs the WOW movement across the world. The two day festival will celebrate community, culture, and entrepreneurialism with artists local, national and international taking part in the event, the first of its kind for the town. Aiming to tackle the subjects that matter most to women, girls and non-binary people, the festival is open to people from all walks of life, however they identify. WOW Rotherham will take place over the weekend of Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July in the town’s Clifton Park and will feature an eclectic series of events, talks, debates, workshops, mentoring and performances. The weekend’s main stage will kick off with a welcome address from WOW Festival organisers from across the globe including founder
Jude Kelly and entrepreneur Dame Julie Kenny, interim chair of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills and Chair of Trustees of the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust. The welcome will be followed by WOW Big Ideas, a platform for short talks about pressing conversations and important ideas for change. Speakers will include award-winning cultural producer and freelance marketer Annalisa Toccara, campaigners and activists The 3 Hijabis who are calling for racists to be banned for life from all football matches in England and senior critical care nurse Charmaine Mutsago. Further events on the Saturday will include a panel discussing issues and barriers to getting or keeping jobs as someone who identifies as a woman, a discussion about women’s health (with no subject considered too taboo!) and music from local South Yorkshire musicians The Sangeet Choir, DJ Tonner, and punk band Skint Knees. There will also be entertainment in the form of comedy and poetry throughout the day. Sunday’s events include fun in the form of Drag Queen Bingo and a silent disco. There will also be a live set from local progressive gothic folk rock band The Mother of Crows, poetry with Nicky Rogers and Ellie Blackburn, an in conversation chat with stroke survivor Donna MacKenzie-Smyth and a number of workshops.
In addition to a programme of important, thought-provoking conversations and workshops, as well as chances to kick back and have some fun, WOW Rotherham will be hosting a diverse WOW Marketplace filled with female makers and organisations; a feature at every WOW Festival around the world. The marketplace will feature a number of stalls including handcrafted gifts and a clothes swap and many more. There will also be a food and drink area to keep attendees refreshed throughout the weekend. As part of the festival, local artists Zoe Walker and Neil Bromwich of Walker and Bromwich will be showcasing their project ‘Siege Weapons of Love’, a series of inflatable sculptures that combine potent symbols of war with flowers and organic forms. This will include a vibrant, loud and joyful procession on Saturday 16th July around the festival site, which will culminate at a beautiful arch decorated with handmade flowers. On Sunday 17th July, the flowers will be gifted to festival visitors as a symbol of love and generosity. Attendees are invited to get involved by making their own flowers as a symbol of peace and love and to highlight the wonderful and welcoming town of Rotherham. Further names and events for WOW Rotherham will be announced in the coming weeks with the festival fast approaching.

disabled families hard hit by poverty council statement on bus cuts First research since the Government announced its package of support for households reveals disabled people and family carers are at breaking-point, and cost-of-living payments will only offer temporary relief. One in two (56 per cent) disabled households in Yorkshire and the Humber have been pushed into debt due to rising costs, with more than a third (38 per cent) now skipping meals to save money. That’s according to new research by the national disability charity Sense, which reveals the financial pressure on family carers and disabled people, amidst the current cost-of-living crisis. Three out of five (65 per cent) disabled households in Yorkshire said they now face difficult decisions, like choosing between heating the home and buying food to eat, with one in four (28 per cent) of UK carers taking on, or looking for, additional work. Nationally, nearly three quarters (74 per cent) of carers said that if prices continue to rise, they will be unable able to cope, with more than two thirds (68 per cent) saying the pressure is affecting their mental health. This new research showing the impact of cost of living for disabled families in Yorkshire and the Humber is part of a national survey by disability charity Sense of two thousand people. The research, the first since the Government announced its package of support to help people struggling with rising prices, reveals that four out of five disabled households in the UK do not believe the measures go far enough. Disabled people and carers already face higher living costs. Households must buy specialist equipment and use more energy for vital services like extra washing, charging wheelchairs and powering oxygen
machines. Transport costs are often higher due to a reliance on taxis or adapted vehicles. And for many, working full time is not an option, while others are locked out of employment because of caring responsibilities. Last month, the Government said that it recognised the pressure on disabled households and announced a one-off disability cost of living payment of £150, with disabled people who fall into the lowest income bracket, receiving an additional payment of £650, taking their total cost-of-living payments to £800. The measures were broadly welcomed, but the concern is that it will only bring temporary relief. Sense is calling for long-term financial support for disabled people and their families. This includes reinstating eligibility for the Warm Home Discount, which currently excludes around 210,000 people on disability benefits from applying.Sense also wants to see benefits urgently increased in line with inflation. In April, Universal Credit and other benefits rose by 3.1 per cent, in line with the CPI rate of inflation last September. Yet, in May, inflation hit a 40-year high of 9 per cent in the 12 months to April, and the Bank of England forecast it will be 11 per cent by autumn. Richard Kramer, Sense Chief Executive, said: “The research highlights the desperate everyday reality of disabled households across the UK, who are in debt and facing impossible decisions such as whether to eat or heat the home. Everyone is affected by rising prices, but disabled households are one of the hardest hit because of their circumstance. Many are in poverty, less likely to be in full-time work and facing additional costs for essential goods and services, like charging the wheelchair or running the oxygen machine. With social care services cut, many

families already struggle to get the support they need and feel there’s no way out of their financial situation. The costs disabled people and families face are not luxuries that can be cut, and ‘improved household budgeting’ will not solve the problem. Disabled people and carers need long-term financial support.” Case study Emma Sharp, from Rotherham in Yorkshire, is a single mum to two children including 11year-old son Deacon who has autism and ADHD. Despite being in work, she is struggling to keep up with rising bills and the costs associated with caring for her son. Emma said: “There are lots of extra costs that come with having a child with additional needs. I don’t always have a choice in what food I buy for Deacon or he just won’t eat, as due to his autism he can become fixated on eating particular foods and will get distressed if they’re not available. He sometimes will only wear certain clothes, so I have to do more laundry to get those clean and dry for him. These costs aren’t indulgences when you’ve got a child with autism, they’re necessary to keep your child happy and healthy. I’ve recently seen my energy bills increase from £60 a month to £195. I don’t think the measures announced by the Government will help in the long run. The money that comes in will come straight out again. It might help for one month, but what about all the months after that?” Sense is inviting the public to sign its petition calling for long-term financial support for disabled people and their families amidst the costof-living crisis.
Following the news that South Yorkshire will see its bus services reduced by a third, Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Public transport is essential for people to get around our city, and it is disgraceful to see our transport system facing yet more cuts to services which will impact on everyone from the elderly who see buses as a lifeline for getting out of the house, to young people who depend on buses to get to school and college every day. Sheffield is England’s fourth-largest city, and we deserve a public transport system that meets the needs of people living and working across our region and ensures that they can get to where they need to go. It is simply not good enough for government to continue to underfund our buses and limit people’s opportunities to work, education and business growth as well as helping us to tackle the environmental challenges. We are doing all we can to improve public transport infrastructure to make journeys by public transport, walking and cycling quicker and more efficient, but we cannot make significant improvements without a proper bus service in place that serves everyone in our local communities. It is clear that we need to see investment in our public transport system now to unlock our potential and make levelling up a reality. I will continue to demand better for the people of Sheffield and work with our partners in South Yorkshire to achieve this.” Meanwhile news has broken that Kate Josephs is to return to

work as Chief Executive, and the Council has released the following statement: The crossparty committee that has been considering the actions of the Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council, Kate Josephs, has concluded its work. “Firstly we would like to thank the people of Sheffield for their patience while the independent investigation has been carried out, and the cross-party committee has conducted its work. We understand this has been a difficult time and people have, quite rightly, been eager to see this situation conclude. There has been a prescribed process that forms part of the contract for any statutory officer, and we have strictly adhered to it. This has meant there has been little information that we have been able to share. As a result of the findings of the independent investigation, the committee were able to conclude their work. Kate Josephs has decided to publicly share that she received a written warning from the committee. Kate will now be resuming her full duties as Chief Executive. The decision was made based on the facts at hand and with very careful consideration. The committee acknowledges that Kate has apologised and believes that she feels genuine remorse.” Statement on behalf of Leader of Sheffield City Council, Cllr Terry Fox: “It’s no secret that I’ve been deeply disappointed by Kate Josephs’ actions. Over the last few months I’ve repeatedly said that I
share the anger and upset felt by some Sheffielders about the choices Kate has made. Those feelings don’t just go away overnight. But I am here to deliver for Sheffield, and that is what matters the most to me now. The Chief Executive’s work to rebuild trust across the city and organisation begins now. Kate and I will also need to rebuild our relationship, and I do believe we are both committed to doing that. We must, and we will, keep driving our amazing city forward. The people of Sheffield deserve that – they are my priority today and always. The cross-party committee, which followed national guidelines was put in place for a reason – to ensure a fair process - and I respect their decision. I would like to thank the committee for their work on this and thank the people of Sheffield for their patience while the process was carried out. Finally, I want to give my sincere thanks to Eugene Walker for his leadership and support over the last few months in his role as Acting Chief Executive, and our outstanding employees here at the council who have continued their fantastic work during what has been a challenging time.” Kate Josephs, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council, has said: “I have made mistakes for which I am deeply sorry. I intend to learn from these mistakes and continue to work hard to be the very best chief executive I can be for our city.”

officer bravery award A South Yorkshire Police officer who bravely traversed busy roads to single-handedly detain two men on the run has won a South Yorkshire Police Federation Bravery Award. PC Dominic Jones was one of several officers travelling in a marked police van through Rotherham town centre last year when he saw a vehicle make off at speed. The officers did not pursue the vehicle but it crashed in its attempt to get away, and both its occupants fled the scene. PC Jones pursued both occupants across the carriageway and into a network of underpasses. Following an extensive chase on foot and a search of the area, he located the first man and detained him after pointing his Taser at him. Shortly afterwards more officers arrived, and PC Jones directed them to handcuff the man. Then he went on to pursue the second man, finding him hiding by the side of a building. As a result of the incident, officers seized an amount of cash and cannabis. It emerged that the men were well-recorded for violent offences, and the vehicle was not registered to either of them, so police are investigating Aggravated Vehicle-Taking as well as Possession with Intent to Supply. Chasing men who
could have been armed around a network of underpasses was worrying, PC Jones said, but he stayed focused on the task. He said: “There was a point when I thought: ‘something bad could happen here’. But I was just focused and concentrating on my work, wanting to locate them both. My operational training kicked in, but certainly afterwards, that’s where you sit down and you think about the what ifs. What could have happened.” South Yorkshire Police Federation Chair Steve Kent said: “Dominic showed clear determination and bravery to pursue and detain these offenders single-handedly. He showed great decisionmaking and leadership skills to direct officers once the first subject was secured and then to continue in the pursuit of the other man. Both individuals were making clear and determined efforts to avoid detention by the police, but Dominic was determined to ensure they were apprehended. This is not out of character for this officer, who regularly goes above and beyond in his duties.” PC Jones attended the South Yorkshire Police Federation Bravery Awards ceremony on 16 June.

The Fringe at Tramlines returns in full force for 2022
The Fringe at Tramlines returns to Sheffield over the weekend of 22nd to 24th July with a full programme of events following a stripped back festival in 2021. With support from Sheffield BID, the city centre will be bursting with music and entertainment over the weekend as people take to the streets for the biggest party of the year. The free outdoor stages (Devonshire Green and The Peace Gardens) and Sheffield city venues, bars, pubs and clubs will feature a huge array of live music and DJs, creating a unique festive atmosphere across the city centre and beyond. The main arena for the Fringe at Tramlines at
Devonshire Green will feature a large stage and a fantastic range of food and drink. Curated by local legend Papa Al, this stage aims to include a diverse range of music representing the great variety of culture in Sheffield. Saturday headliners Jungle Lion are a frenetic 10-piece ska band with a long history of performances during the Tramlines weekend. Jungle Lion are joined by the outlandish Captain Avery, Romano Jilo (a local Romani dance group), Neighbourhood Voices (60 strong all female choir), Blue Street Brass, LAIK and post-punk electronic sounds from Speed for Lovers. DJs on Saturday include Andy H, Ian Hodgson, Kom Kom,
Broc Pastor and Dubcentral. The host for the day will be acclaimed singer, songwriter and producer, April Ess. Sunday at Devonshire Green is headlined by Highway Child (soul, blues and funk classics) and the magnificent Sheffield Beatles Project who are a super group of local musicians playing music from The Beatles. Also performing are Solar Love (reggae, dub, Latin), Tin Soldiers (15 piece festival band), alt folk from Before Breakfast and Sheffield based singer songwriter Teah Lewis. DJs on Sunday include festival specialist Jimmy the Gent, Kat Sugi, Myna, Rob Cotterell, Aejazz Zee and Papa Al. The hosts for
Sunday will be Penny and Johnny. Papa Al – Stage Curator said; ‘The Fringe at Tramlines stage on Devonshire Green is going to be brilliant this year and I really relish the chance to put some of the city’s finest musicians on the stage. With the Women’s Euros in town, and both footballers and supporters coming here, there’s an emphasis on women in music, with five female DJs playing over the weekend, a 60 strong female choir and some truly talented musicians gracing the stage.’ Following a big success last year with this format, The Peace Gardens will feature DJs with a multitude of music genres that are
guaranteed to get people dancing. Hosted by Sile Sibanda of Radio Sheffield (who will also DJ), Saturday highlights include a DJ set from Dorian Cox of The Long Blondes and an open deck event hosted by local music shop and venue, Record Junkee. Also featured are Herbal T & Mikki Revel from Bradford FM playing a smooth mix of reggae, dub and soul and Jesus Hairdo, former DJ from the famous ‘Brighton Beach’ club night. Also on Saturday are nON sTOP eROTIC cABERET with dark electro pop and Manchester DJ/Producer Xariella Music. Sunday will also feature SIle SIbanda and Record Junkee DJs whilst Henry e from The Orielles will play an Indie
Rock set and Emily Pilbeam will play the best unsigned, undiscovered music from across the region. With so much musical entertainment being hosted across the city, Sheffield City Council have partnered with app developers Woov to create a brand new mobile app that will include a comprehensive guide to everything that’s taking place over the weekend. The free app can be downloaded for both Android and Apple devices using the link woov.to/ tramlinesfringe The Welcome to Sheffield webpage also features dedicated ‘The Fringe at Tramlines’ pages and is a great source of general information about Sheffield.
It has suggestions for discovering areas around the city to eat, drink and hang out over the whole weekend. www. welcometosheffield.co.uk/ thefringe A printed programme is also being produced by Exposed Magazine and will be distributed across the city in advance of the event with digital version via the www. exposedmagazine.co.uk Cllr Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development and Skills Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: ‘The Fringe at Tramlines takes Sheffield back to where the festival started over a decade ago, showcasing our city’s rich local talent. ‘It’s an amazing line up
once again, that reflects Sheffield’s cultural diversity and celebrates the strength of our creative industries, with two days of free live music from the Devonshire Green and Peace Gardens stages, and loads of extra activity from across Sheffield’s fantastic bars, pubs and clubs. ‘And this year, with the new app it’s even easier to plan your weekend so you don’t miss out on all the brilliant performers across the weekend. Whoever you are, whatever you love, The Fringe at Tramlines has got it covered, the city will be buzzing and we can’t wait to see everyone coming together to enjoy all that’s on offer.”

The Owls kicked off pre-season with a steady workout at the Impact Arena and Smith, standing in for Darren Moore who continues his recovery from minor knee surgery, told swfc.co.uk: “It was good to get the first 90 minutes under the belt. “It’s all about the physicality at this stage and we got what we wanted this afternoon. “It was a good workout for

Adam Clayton felt Rovers got plenty out of their opening friendly of the summer at Armthorpe Welfare. Second half goals from George Miller and Jack Goodman saw Rovers through to a 2-0 win at the Marra Falcons Stadium as the pre-season match programme got underway.

Working alongside goalkeeping coach Matt Duke, we are extremely happy to have Wes and Adam in the building.” Meanwhile, local stopper Jake Eastwood has also agreed fresh terms on a two-year contract, with the 25-year-old expected to be loaned out for first team experience. season on loan at fellow Championship side Millwall, and now moves to Germany to sign for the Bundesliga side. Millers land Lincoln defender Bramall Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the signing of left-wing-back Cohen Bramall, who has joined the club for an undisclosed fee from Lincoln City, subject to ratification from the EFL and FA. The 26-year-old defender has put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal at AESSEAL New York Stadium, which sees him become Paul Warne’s fifth signing of the summer. The highly-rated wing back made 54 appearances across all competitions during a two-year spell at LNER Stadium, in which he helped the Imps to the Sky Bet League One Play-off final in 2020/21. The Crewe-born operator came through the nonleague ranks with the likes of Kidsgrove Athletic, Nantwitch Town and Market Drayton Town, before a move up the pyramid with Hednesford Town in 2017. After an impressive spell at Keys Park – where he was also working in a Bentley car factory – Bramall earned himself a move to Premier League giants Arsenal, who snapped him up later in the same year when he was aged 20. He featured for the Gunners in a number of U21s and Papa Johns Trophy fixtures and enjoyed a loan spell in the second tier with Birmingham City in the 2017/18 campaign, before a switch to Colchester United followed when his contract in North London expired. Bramall made 68 appearances in all competitions in Essex, before completing his switch to Lincolnshire in February 2021.

On pre-season so far: “Everyone has come back in really good shape with good scores on the fitness stuff. “Now it’s about game time, getting used to playing again and playing with each other again and going from there. “The atmosphere is really good. “We know what we’ve got to do this season. There’s no ifs, buts, or maybes. We know what we’re going for. “We just have to make sure the application,

On the three new additions to the squad: “I’ve been with George Miller before and he gives you everything he’s got. “He’s going to try to add the goals to what he’s got. He’s been doing it in training and you saw in this one when he came on, he scored a great header and made no fuss about it. “Biggo [Harrison Biggins] was the fittest man I’ve seen when he came in last week. “Luke [Molyneux] has only trained a couple of days but his movement was sharp in an 11v11 we had.
