REGIONAL parks receive international mark of quality We all love a walk in the park, a picnic, or a well-earned rest on a park bench and this week we’re receiving Green Flag awards in recognition of the high standard of Sheffield’s parks and green spaces. Green Flag Awards are an international mark of quality for well managed parks and green spaces all over the world. In Sheffield, 16 of our parks have received this honour, which means they meet the criteria for being safe, welcoming, well maintained and well managed. Sheffield City Council is proud to receive Green Flag Awards for Cholera Monument Grounds and
Clay Wood, Devonshire Green, Ecclesall Woods, Firth Heritage Park, Meersbrook Park, Millhouses Park, Norfolk Heritage Park, Peace Gardens, Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Sheffield Winter Garden, Tinsley Green, Weston Park, Wheata Woods. Green flags were also awarded to Manor Field Park - Green Estate, Wyming Brook - Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust, Sheffield & Tinsley Canal Canal & River Trust. The Green Flag awards were announced in the same week that Sheffield celebrated Tramlines and the WEUROS semi-final, with both of them using our green

spaces as their event venues in locations across the city. Cllr Richard Williams, Chair of the Communities, Parks and Leisure Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “We’re very lucky in Sheffield to have such a wonderful, high-quality range of parks, woodland and open green spaces on our doorsteps. “I’d like to thank the Sheffield City Council teams and the great number of volunteers who support us each week. We’re passionate about parks in Sheffield and it shows. “Every site has been assessed by experienced judges including both office and site visits, and to gain 16 awards from
those assessments is a real credit to the city. In Doncaster Elmfield Park and Hexthorpe Park have now attained a level of excellence as set out by organisers Keep Britain Tidy and have received an award that is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces. Arguably Doncaster’s most famous park, the historic site of Elmfield Park is a green space which opened nearly a century ago and is protected by the ‘Fields in Trust’ perpetuity. It has recently undergone a drastic transformation after significant investment brought the park in to the 21st century. Visitors now

Becky Measures added to bumper Xmas Roxy line-up A renowned local radio star and DJ is set to make a guest appearance at Sheffield’s celebrated Roxy night this December. Becky Measures, who presents shows on BBC Radio Sheffield, will be spinning her favourite tunes from the ‘80s and ‘90s at the massive party night that’s set to take place at the city’s 02 Academy.
Hundreds of tickets have already been sold for the return of the event. Sheffield’s biggest ‘80s/’90s Smash Hits Party is set to play hits across two decades again. Becky Measures said: “I’m a massive fan of tunes from the ‘80s and ‘90s so I didn’t take much persuading! I actually attended the Roxy night last year and it was fantastic night so I’m looking forward to being a part of it.” This is the fourth time the event has taken place and tickets are selling faster than ever this time around. Resident DJ Dean Brissett – better known as the Dean of Disco who amassed a legion of followers at his regular retro nights in the 1990s and 2000s – is set to spin the discs alongside Becky Measures. The event is also set to raise hundreds for the region’s most needy kids through its support of Hallam FM’s Cash For Kids. The party is set to take place in the Roxy venue’s former Arundel Street home which is now the 02 Academy.
People are encouraged to come in fancy dress with discounts for office parties available. Tickets are £10 in advance. The event takes place on Saturday December 10th and last from 9pm until late. Tickets can be purchased from: bit.ly/Roxy80s90sSmashHitsParty
SNODGRASS A guy tried to sell me a mirror, but I knew it was a scam. I could see right through it. Today a large truck full of hair restoring tonic, overturned and flooded the street. Police are combing the area. I was fired from my job when I asked a customer if they wanted “smoking” or “nonsmoking”. Apparently the correct terms are “cremation” or “burial”. To the person who stole my glasses. I will find you, I have contacts! The world champion tounge twister got arrested the other day. I heard they’re going to give him a tough sentence. How do you make a water bed more bouncy? Fill it with spring water. I‘ve just joined a new band... we’re called ‘Cat’s Eyes’... We just play middle of the road stuff. My Grandad recalls fighting them on the beaches. Lovely man, terrible lifeguard.

new motorway camera technology council disrepair claims rising New mobile technology capable of automatically detecting motorists who fail to wear a seatbelt or hold mobile phones at the wheel is being trialled in the UK for the first time under plans to boost road safety. A new van packed with detection equipment has hit England’s motorways and major A-roads as part of a research project carried out alongside Warwickshire Police to understand the scale of the problem around these dangerous motoring offences. As part of this work, drivers will be sent warning letters in partnership with the police force, informing them of the dangers of their actions. The ‘sensor test vehicle’ is equipped with multiple cameras which can record footage of passing motorists. Images captured by the cameras are processed using artificial intelligence (AI) to determine if motorists were using a handheld mobile phone and drivers and passengers were without a seat belt. The van is also capable of being kitted with additional technology to detect tailgating offences. The vehicle, which will be stationary at the side of the road while in use, is being trialled over a period of almost three months. The warning letters, issued by police, will remind drivers that they could be fined up to £500 for not wearing a seat belt in addition to penalty points. Drivers will also be asked to complete a short survey which will be used to inform National Highways’ research. Using the technology in a van will allow National Highways to test it across different types of road to better understand driver behaviour across the network. The van is initially being employed for around three months. Findings will inform the next steps and any future deployment. This research forms part of National Highways’ commitment to road
safety as its number one priority. England’s motorways are already among the safest roads globally and the company has an ambitious strategy to further improve safety over the coming years. This includes a long-term commitment to cutting the number of people killed or seriously injured on the strategic road network to zero by 2040. Government figures show that there were 420 collisions on British roads in 2019 in which the driver was using a mobile phone at the wheel. The latest road casualty statistics for 2020 show that 23% of car occupant fatalities in reported road collisions were not wearing a seatbelt. National Highways Head of Road Safety Jeremy Phillips said: “Safety remains our top priority and we want everyone to get to their destination safely. Sadly, there are still drivers who do not feel the need to wear a seatbelt, become distracted by their phones or travel too close to the vehicle in front. We want to see if we can change driver behaviour and therefore improve road safety for everyone. Our advice is clear; please leave enough space, buckle up and give the road your full attention.” Dr Jamie Uff, Transportation, AECOM, said: “Despite the oftenreported dangers of distracted driving and failing to wear seat belts, the numbers of people killed or seriously injured as a result of these behaviours remain high. The technology AECOM is deploying makes detection straightforward and is providing valuable insight to the police and policy makers on the current level of road user behaviour. We are really keen to use this equipment to raise awareness and help improve road safety for all.” RAC head of roads policy Nicholas Lyes said: “For several years the RAC has been urging the Government to explore how camera-based

technology could reduce the scourge of drivers who put others at risk by using handheld phones while driving. What’s more, 79% of drivers we surveyed support the introduction of this kind of technology, with a clear majority (52%) strongly in favour of this happening. We’re extremely pleased to see National Highways and Warwickshire Police working together on this, and very much hope other police forces follow suit in a bid to make our roads safer.” Around 25% of road deaths were linked to not wearing a seatbelt in 2018. In the same year, 117 people were killed or seriously injured in a collision where the driver was found to have been distracted. A recent trial of new static road side tailgating cameras on a stretch of the M1 captured 60,343 occasions of vehicles driving too close, in just one year. The advice from National Highways is clear: leave plenty of space, buckle up and leave your phone alone. AECOM previously worked with Acusensus (road safety AI specialists) to trial a fixed camera that could detect drivers not wearing seatbelts and holding a mobile phone. The fixed camera detected nearly 7,000 people failing to belt up and over 25,000 drivers holding their mobile phone in just six months. Separately, National Highways trialled new tailgating cameras on a stretch of the M1 near Northampton. They captured 60,343 instances of vehicles driving too close in one year (October 2020 to September 2021).
Do you have outstanding repair issues in your home? Have you been encouraged to make a disrepair claim? Before you proceed, please read on…. Sheffield City Council has in recent years seen a significant rise in disrepair claims, this is having a huge negative impact on the Council, their tenants and the services they provide. The number of claims against the council is increasing, and they are now paying out millions of pounds in legal costs – the impact gets bigger with every new claim received. The knock-on effect of this is that it leaves less money to spend on much needed repairs, improvements and investment in homes. They would much rather invest this money into improving our housing stock instead of this going to large legal firms. While tenants have a right to seek independent legal advice over disrepair, legal firms are making huge profits from these claims. Even if you are successful in making a claim, you will likely be left with only a very small percentage of money paid in damages. In some cases, tenants have been left with legal debts, and the stress of going to court for nothing. Housing disrepair claims farmers Claims farm workers are going door to door in most areas of Sheffield and could be targeting your area. They are also targeting Council tenants through social media campaigns, which appear to be supported by the council when they are not. A claims farmer encourages people to make compensation claims and then sells these claims on to legal firms for their own gain.

Some will let you believe they are working for the council, but they are not. The legal firms involved may also encourage you to refuse to allow access to the council, which prevents the council resolving any issues quickly. As well as delaying repairs being completed, this is also a breach of your tenancy agreement. If they come to your door, make sure you: • Always ask for identification • call the police if you feel scared or threatened • talk to the Council before you sign any documents Some tenants have been left in debt with large legal bills. Don’t be misled or bullied into signing anything, as you will be liable to pay fees if you change your mind. Damp and mould Damp and condensation can cause significant repair issues in your property, especially in the winter months. This includes mould growth on walls, ceilings and furniture; this can particularly be an issue in the bathroom and kitchen of your property. Cold, damp housing also encourages the growth of mould and mites, which can increase the risk of respiratory illnesses in some people. To reduce the amount of condensation produced in your home, make sure
you: • vent tumble dryers to the outside of your property, unless it is selfcondensing • dry washing outdoors on a line, or put it in the bathroom with the door closed and the window open or the fan on • avoid using paraffin and portable flue-less gas heaters • close the kitchen and bathroom doors when they are in use, even if there is an extractor fan • increase ventilation by keeping windows and vents open • ensure there is a space between the back of wardrobes and the wall, and avoid positioning in front of exterior walls • when cooking, open windows in the kitchen or use an extractor fan if fitted • cover saucepans while cooking and do not leave kettles boiling • wipe down surfaces affected by condensation regularly, to prevent black spot mould growth. • keep temperatures in all rooms above 15°C as this will reduce condensation forming on external walls • wipe and dry windows and window sills every morning to stop water evaporating onto your furnishings • try to avoid drying clothes on radiators • ensure cupboards and drawers are not full as this will restrict air flow

check your visa! Visa applications can be a stressful process due to many factors, especially when it comes to getting all of the documents in order. Many countries have a lengthy application process, with some requiring more information than others and if this information is false or inaccurate an application can be rejected. Eight most common visa application mistakes Invalid passport The validity of a passport is very important when applying for a visa in some countries, with these countries will often require passports to have at least six months of validity left before they expire. Visa applications can even be rejected on the basis that the passport is not in a presentable condition. Cutting it too close Allow for enough time before travelling to account for any unforeseen delays when applying for a visa. Each country has a different turnaround time when it comes to the process, so it is best to get started with the application as soon as possible. It’s advisable to allow for more time during peak seasons or if there is a high demand for visa appointments. Mismatched details A visa application can be denied in the first
instance if the details provided are not accurate or correct. This can range from misspelled names to inappropriately sized passport photos. Double checking the application or getting someone else to read through it, can help to identify any mistakes before sending the visa. Not checking the country checklist Each country will have its own specific documentation requirements and these requirements can be used as a checklist. Ticking off each document when filling out the application can ensure that nothing is missed in the process. Applying for the wrong visa Before applying for a visa, ensure to do some research into the eligibility criteria for each specific visa. Check the criteria that are specific to the destination country to ensure a hundred percent accuracy. Not having the right documents It’s always worth checking that all the documents needed for the application are available to hand. Each country will have its own set of requirements that are usually outlined on its tourism website.

Having enjoyed an incredibly impressive run of 12 years at London’s Dominion Theatre, followed by many triumphant tours and the 10th anniversary world arena tour in 2013, ‘We Will Rock You’ will dazzle audiences at multiple venues across the UK & Ireland on a 7 month tour, coming to Sheffield City Hall between the 29th of August and September 3rd. ‘We Will Rock You’ is set in a distant, dystopian future where Earth is called Planet Mall and its inhabitants wear the same clothes, think the same thoughts and exist in a brain-dead haze. This system forbids musical instruments and composers, whilst rock music is all but unknown. The musical tells the story of Galileo, Scaramouche, Killer Queen and the other ‘Bohemians’. Join them on their journey to discover the Holy Grail of Rock and restore the free exchange of thought, fashion and most importantly, live music. Speaking about the process he underwent to write the show’s script, Ben Elton, one of Britain’s most successful writers, says it became clear to him that the story had to comprise an abstract quality “that reflected the feel of the word and music, rather than its literal content”. He elaborates that, “This was not pop music, but rock music. Some of the most famous rock ever written, and legendary music should have a legendary context. I began to think of legends, both new and old, from King Arthur to The Terminator; heroic myths in which brave individuals take on the vast monolithic force of evil systems.” Equally as impressive as the show created from their musical canon are Queen legends themselves, Brian May and Roger Taylor, who had early reservations about staging a musical. “We were not initially convinced, not being fans of the ‘Musical Theatre’ genre on the whole,” says Brian. “The show needed to work in a theatrical context and retain the rock, whilst also incorporating the spectacle, uniqueness and humour embodied by Queen.” This was certainly an important aspect to include for Roger, who affirmed that, “We (Queen) took the music seriously, but we never took ourselves seriously. We always had the ability to laugh at ourselves. Some of the stage gear and even some of the music is quite humorous. The whole middle section of Bohemian Rhapsody was - we did a lot of daft things and a lot of experimentation.” It was therefore important to do something new. Brian continues, “If we were going to go into this arena, the challenge was that we would somehow try and make it our own.” Fortunately, this challenge was both accepted and triumphantly overcome. Brian remembers that, “there was a point where I realised there was a whole new area of creativity opening up to us if we wanted it - a whole new canvas to paint on”. And ‘We Will Rock You’ is certainly creative with a book written by Ben
Elton, whom Roger describes as having “such a great active mind that never ever stops churning out ideas”. The show is fun, light and humorous, yet also contains those softer and, at times, heart-rending moments, which allow an audience to emotionally invest. Ben describes it as “intriguing, challenging, achingly romantic, brutally cynical and at once both sad and hilarious”. ‘We Will Rock You’ undoubtedly blends all of these elements and, as Ben intended it to be received, Roger describes the show as “silly, but funny and making quite a lot of serious points while it goes on its rather daft course”. Echoing Brian’s determination to create something “new in every sense”, he goes on to reflect that the intention was “to keep it a bit gritty and make sure it’s not a typical show”. If you haven’t seen the show before, then you’ll soon find out that they completed this task with flying colours. Thematically, ‘We Will Rock You’ couldn’t seem more relevant today: set in a world where individuality is no longer valued and being performed on a stage which is “breathtaking in terms of equipment” and “totally cutting edge technically”, the show arguably speaks to a modern audience more than ever. With today’s focus on technological advancement, reading and the marriage of minds seem to have become out-dated activities and Brian recognises the musical’s significance today. “I think it’s a very good comment on the way things are going. Ben’s idea that individuality is being eroded every second of the day and soon it will be impossible for people to write their own music, think their own thoughts, write their own poetry is very perceptive.” To Brian, ‘Radio Ga Ga’ “represents the malady which is taking over the world. It’s almost like that old ‘men versus machines’ thing, which we also addressed a few albums ago.” Just as ‘We Will Rock You’ explores themes relevant to those growing up in today’s world, the tour offers younger generations, who may not have heard this music before, the opportunity to discover the iconic musical genius that is Queen. Brian comments, “I had this very strange thought that it’s quite possible that this particular musical might be the thing through which people know our music in 300 years’ time.” Speaking about the band’s relevance today he goes on to say that, “I’m quite shocked at how fresh this stuff still sounds and it makes me very happy, obviously”. Queen’s back catalogue is clearly standing the test of time, and this new tour of ‘We Will Rock You’ is sure to be a stand out spectacle which will offer fantastic performances and incredible production value. Brian says “We’re confident ‘We Will Rock You’ fans will love revisiting the world’s first true Rock Theatrical, and a whole new generation will now discover the VIBE!” We Will Rock You UK tour comes to Sheffield City Hall between 29 August – 03 September. Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury BLADES OFF TO LOSING START A game to remember United’s start to the 2022/23 campaign began with a loss at Vicarage Road. Joao Pedro’s goal shortly before the hour proved decisive in a closely fought encounter, much to the frustration of everyone of a Blades persuasion. Heckingbottom handed the experienced Clark a debut, whilst Jebbison earnt the opportunity to partner Ndiaye in attack. Brewster and Sharp were named on the bench which also included recent loan recruit Khadra. Ahmedhodžić (suspension), Basham (hamstring), Robinson (knee) and Doyle (thigh) were amongst those who missed out. The home side started on the front foot with Dennis looking a real threat, but after the lively forward got
BLADES REVEAL NEW HOME KIT Sheffield United’s eagerly anticipated official Erreà home kit for the new 2022/23 EFL Sky Bet Championship season has been revealed. This shirt is a celebration of the club, its history and its loyal supporters and will once again feature the famous red and white stripes on the back of the shirt and also on the sleeves. On 15 minutes, Clark was cautioned for halting the progress of Dennis, whilst at the other end, Berge registered United’s intent with the first shot on target from distance. Tempers threatened to boil over moments later following a foul on Ndiaye. The result of a minor melee was yellows for Fleck and Sierralta. Watford forced consecutive corners, but it was the Blades looking dangerous on the break as Ndiaye latched on to Jebbison’s flick only to be denied by Bachmann, who then denied the England U20 international with a curling effort after an incisive break that saw Baldock freed down the right. The second of the
aforementioned efforts came after Foderingham smartly collected Joao Pedro’s header from Sema’s cross, before Cleverley was cautioned for cynically pulling down Ndiaye. The second period started as the first ended with a home player booked, with Joao Pedro seeing yellow for a hack at Norwood. Lowe replaced the injured Stevens, but on 56 minutes United fell behind. A short corner routine didn’t work as planned and the hosts broke at pace which ended with Sarr teeing up JOAO PEDRO who fired between the legs of the advancing Foderingham. Heckingbottom’s response to the untimely setback was to make a triple change as Khadra, Brewster and Osborn entered the fray, followed
later on by Sharp as United search for an equaliser. Chances were at a premium, but from Fleck’s free kick Egan peeled off at the back post only for his angled header to go across the goal and wide of the far post, Watford tested Foderingham from 20 yards through substitute Manaj, before six minutes added time were signalled with Berge and Kamara booked in stoppage time, but ultimately the evening would end in disappointment and defeat for the visitors

proudly sponsored by Randox Health for a second successive season, along with recently announced sponsor Ultimate Champions taking their place on the back of shirt. The Blades Superstore will reopen on Saturday 6th August 2022 for the first
home game of the season against Millwall. The new home shirt will be exclusively on sale in the Bramall Lane store from this Saturday in sizes from small to 4XL and available online from Monday 8th August 2022.
Blades: Foderingham, Baldock, Stevens (Lowe 55), Fleck, Berge, Egan, Norwood (Osborn 68), Clark (Khadra 68), Ndiaye (Sharp 78), NorringtonDavies, Jebbison (Brewster 68). Unused: Amissah, Gordon.
After an opening day contest to remember, Darren Moore tagged the 3-3 draw with Portsmouth as a game that had everything. Both sides led throughout an end to end encounter that could have gone either way but finished all square. To add to the drama at Hillsborough, Lee Gregory was sent off in stoppage time. Moore told swfc.co.uk: “It certainly was a game that had everything. Goals, chances, a red card, a wonderful atmosphere, it had everything. “From our point of view,
of course we wanted the three points and we have to take the one. I thought we controlled the first half, they came back into it in the second half, went ahead and we showed the character to come back ourselves. “So it could have gone either way. While I am pleased with the goals we scored, the goals we conceded were avoidable seeing them in real time. “We will analyse them in detail and then get to work on the training ground.” On the red card for Gregory in stoppage time, the gaffer added:
“There was a little bit of confusion because not everyone knew he was sent off. “I’d have to look at the footage because it’s difficult to see exactly what happened. It was late in the game but it’s never easy to play with 10 men.” The gaffer had high praise for Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who twice thumped in unstoppable shots first to restore the lead for his side and then to salvage a point. He said: “Fizz has so much potential, he is capable of that, we’ve worked hard to get him
It’s a really positive start - Warne Paul Warne was full of praise for his Millers side after a solid start on home soil in the form of a 1-1 draw with Swansea City... “I thought that we limited them to very few chances and that’s all we can do. “I thought on another day, Cohen [Bramall] might have taken the net off when he got clean through. “Overall, I was really pleased with the
performance. “I’d like to say that I was really pleased with the fan base. “Maybe I’m putting a romantic spin on it but I just thought that they showed an understanding of how difficult this league is for us and how tough an opposition it was for us. “They applauded it when we got them in positions to go backwards when we pressed and when you
see the physical outputs of my players you can’t not be proud of them. “If they’d have scored in the last minute, I’d have been heartbroken but it wouldn’t have taken away from their level of performance. “Rathbone had a sore quad. We rested him all week and he’s got a Grade 1, so it’s nothing really. However, when he was being reintroduced

into more advanced positions and that work has paid off today. “His goals showed power and precision and I’m really pleased for him. There was no stopping either of the goals, particularly the second one, the execution was superb. “His control of the ball and drive to get us up the pitch was exceptional. His confidence should be through the roof. “He did take a knock towards the end and we will get him in on Monday and assess him from there.”
Gary McSheffrey was proud of his players for their display in a challenging game against Bradford City. The game presented a juggling act from the start with Tommy Rowe waking up with a neck spasm, Liam Ravenhill having to be substituted early on into the game, and followed by a red card for Lee Tomlin towards the end of the first-half. Despite those obstacles, McSheffrey was delighted with the response from his players to adapt to the occasion. He said: “From the moment we went down to 10 men, I would have taken a 0-0, and I make no
apologies for that. “The lads dug-in well from start to finish. “I am proud of the boys because Bradford threw everything they could at us to win. “We stood strong and that’s the team I’ve got now; a bunch of men who are structured and can deal with problems on their own. That is a huge change in mentality. “With the players we had missing, we knew it was going to be more of a back-to-thewall game. Hence why we had Tom Anderson, Adam Long and Bobby Faulkner on the bench, because we knew we were going to have to stand up to them; head things, and block things.” Kyle Knoyle and

James Maxwell completed their first full game of the season, while Tom Anderson featured for the first time after recovering from an injury sustained last season. He added: “The new lads who played have good heads on their shoulders. They have taken on new information well in a short space of time and have game intelligence. “Kyle Hurst was disciplined and sacrificed attacking for the team. It’s not something he will be used to, and won’t be something he will be doing every game. “To say they were playing their first 90 minutes, Kyle Knoyle and James Maxwell, did excellent. “We got Tom back out there too to nullify Andy
into training, he could still feel it. “I wasn’t prepared to risk it, but it would have been a perfect game for Ollie. “Pelts has only trained one day, although he looks in unbelievable shape. I try and run a fair camp and the other lads in front of him were more match fit, so I think he needs a bit of training before I can consider him.”
Cook and we went manfor-man on set plays which worked. “Jonny was superb. He took a lot of crosses – probably the most he ever has done in a game – and he slowed the match down for us.” The Rovers boss believes the result would not have been possible without the backing from supporters. He added: “The fans were brilliant. I knew they were going to back us in their numbers today and their support drove the players. “They were the fans that you could hear during the warm-up. “The fans understood the performance, the substitutions, the decisions and rightly so they will be proud of the players as they stood up to the challenge and worked their socks off.”
