Local duo Gary Birtles and Lorrie Brown produced the show and are regular performers at The Garrison in Hillsborough and Fairways Inn at Birley with their lunchtime tribute shows.
Gary says, “The cast who portray Capt Mainwaring and the troop are uncannily like the real characters and certainly attract attention whenever they do a walkabout together. At the beginning of the show, they march through the audience and get the crowd clapping along before they walk onto the stage.”
In between the sketches featuring the characters, the show also features tributes to some of the great variety acts of WW2, including Lorrie’s tribute to Vera Lynn, Flanagan and Allen, George Formby, Gracie Fields and a special duet performing Whispering Grass from ‘It Aint Half Hot Mum’.
“It is such a funny sketch” says Gary who also appears as Warden Hodges. “We have a great cast who have been working together for a few years now and we have all developed a real chemistry on stage.”
The role of Captain Mainwaring is played by top George Formby tribute Colin Bourdiec.
Gary says, “Colin has really taken to the role and the resemblance is uncanny.”
The rest of the cast is made up of experienced actors and variety acts and features local entertainers from Sheffield including, John Ashmore who plays Private Pike. The show has been touring the UK for the last 7yrs and has also appeared at the City Hall.
Portraying Vera Lynn, the forces sweetheart In the show is Lorrie Brown, who is the sole female in the cast. My dad was bragging about his new hearing aid. “State of the Art,” he said, “It cost me a fortune.”
I asked: “Awesome what type is it? “
He said: “‘Two thirty.”
Yesterday I purchased a world map...gave my wife a dart and said to her “throw this and wherever it lands, I’m taking you for a holiday”. Turns out we’re spending three weeks behind the fridge.
Tickets can also be purchased on the day at the door but please arrive at 1.15pm.

I called the doctor “My wife is going into labour! What should I do?”
“Is this her first child?” he asked.
“No, this is her husband.”
I don’t want to brag, but I finished the jigsaw puzzle in a week... ...and it said 2-4 years on the box.
My ex wife cheated on me with her deaf best friend.
Honestly, I should have seen the signs.
