Don’t Let our Pubs be Lost Forever
Two thousand of the nation’s much-loved pubs are facing last orders, the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) has warned as it calls on the Government to extend a lifeline to the sector.
The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) is calling on the Government to use the Spring Budget to show it understands just how much pubs and breweries mean to their communities, and the pressures the sector is facing, and deliver a plan for sustainable growth with fair, modernised tax rates and a focus on skills and training needed to ensure pubs and breweries can thrive.
The BBPA are calling on the Chancellor to freeze duty rates, implement a significant increase in the discount for draft beer sold in pubs, and
introduce the previously announced reduced rate for lower-strength beers from 1st August.
And ahead of the Energy Bill Relief Scheme being significantly reduced from 1 April, the BBPA is also continuing to highlight the poor practice of energy suppliers and the ongoing impact soaring energy costs is having on the industry, insisting that the Government holds suppliers accountable and fix a broken system that is penalizing hospitality businesses.
The BBPA’s call comes as data from Oxford Economics estimates on-trade beer sales will decline by 9% in 2023/4. This equates to one million fewer barrels of beer sold (288 million pints) and 25,000 potential job losses in pubs and the wider industry.
It also follows a new survey that reveals just how much
Brits value their beloved locals – with venues up and down the country celebrated as spaces that provide first jobs, form friendships, bring communities together and help people find love.
69% of respondents agreed that local pubs play an important role in bringing communities together, while over two thirds (67%) say they play an important role in creating jobs. Six in 10 of us (60%) are concerned about an increase in loneliness if more local pubs close down, whilst 42% agree that closure of their local pub would devastate their community.
In what’s being termed a make-or-break moment for the sector, the BBPA are also encouraging those
interested in supporting their local pub to sign their Long Live the Local petition at longlivethelocal. pub and share their favourite pub memories across social media using #LongLiveTheLocal Chief Executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, Emma McClarkin, said: “It is crucial the Government shows in this budget that it understands the pressures the sector is facing and just how much our pubs and breweries mean to communities everywhere across the UK.
“We urgently need the Chancellor to deliver a plan for sustainable growth with fair, modernised tax rates and a focus on skills and training needed to ensure pubs and breweries can thrive.
“After almost three years of extremely tough trading conditions due to lockdowns, an energy crisis, supply chain disruptions and more, now is a make-or-break moment to save our locals and breweries from failure now in the years to come, we need the Government to act now or risk losing something very special forever.”

The new funding, secured by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), is part of the Individual Placement and Support in Primary Care (IPSPC) initiative. The aim of the IPSPC initiative is to promote inclusive growth by helping to achieve a reduction in health inequalities through supporting people to access employment.
The £5.9 million IPSPC grant will mean that the current instalment of the Working Win programme, which has provided support since April 2018, can continue to benefit participants until June 2023. In July 2023, the delivery of the new grant programme will commence, for which an open

This leads to businesses losing productivity and causes reduced quality of life for individuals. Working Win can help by supporting those out of work or off sick with free coaching to get them to a better place in their employment journey. This brings benefits to them, to employers and to the wider community.”

The Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is set to announce in this week’s Budget an additional £33 million over the next 3 years to support veterans, in recognition of the sacrifices they’ve made for the UK.
The majority of the funding package (£20 million) will go towards the Veteran Capital Housing Fund - a new project to provide extra housing for veterans through the development of new builds and refurbishment of veteran social and charitable housing. The Chancellor will also extend the Veterans Mobility Fund –backed by £3 million - to provide enduring support for veterans with serious physical injury resulting from their service. The remaining £10 million will go directly to the Office for Veteran’s Affairs to increase the service and engagement provided to veterans over the next two years. Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt said: “We all owe our veterans a huge amount of gratitude for defending democracy and keeping our country safe – and it’s only right that we provide them with all the support they need when they come home. This government is firmly on the side of our veterans, and this week I’ll set out a comprehensive package of policies that will solidify our enduring commitment to our ex-servicemen and women for years to come.”
There are thousands of units in houses, village settlements, care homes and other accommodation specifically for veterans across the country. Many of these could be in need of modernisation, replacement or expansion. Providing sustainable housing is key to helping those who have left service – particularly
those who are vulnerable and with complex needs.
The new £20 million Veteran Capital Housing Fund will go towards this alongside action to end veteran rough sleeping within this Parliament –helping the government deliver its pledge in the Veterans’ Strategy Action Plan 2022-24.
The Veterans Mobility Fund has previously been used to provide dedicated equipment for hundreds of eligible veterans, including specialist wheelchairs and orthotics which is not usually available via the NHS or through the Ministry of Defence. The additional £3 million will refresh this fund to ensure veterans continue to get the specialist support they need.
The government has a strong record of supporting veterans. At the end of last year, the government announced more than £8.5 million of funding to deliver services in more than 900 housing units in England, where specialist help for veterans, including with health, education and employment needs are provided. As part of this, the government established a new referral scheme - Op FORTITUDE – that will enable veterans at risk of homelessness to access supported housing and wrap-around specialist care in health, housing and education from later this year.
The government also introduced Op COURAGE, a bespoke mental health support service for veterans in the NHS in England, backed by over £18 million a year investment plus an additional £2.7 million to be invested over the next two years. The service has already helped tens of thousands of patients since it was established in 2021.
savING oN eNerGY bIlls YoUNG Carers’ daY
The South Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership is taking part in Young Carers Action Day on 15 March. With young carers providing invaluable support to their families, this year’s Young Carer’s Action Day theme: Make Time for Young Carers is something the Partnership is urging the community to support. National data suggests that the proportion of young carers’ time spent selflessly providing a significant amount of care is increasing. Whilst the challenges of being a young person and caring for loved ones can have an impact on education, health, and wellbeing, the cost of living crisis is adding additional strain with many young carers living in areas which report lower income levels Many young carers report feeling overwhelmed and unsupported. The Partnership’s Unpaid Carers Programme recognises this and works with young carer services, health services, schools and education providers, as well as with community organisations to raise awareness of young carers and ensure they can access essential support.
Karen Jackson, SeniorResponsible Officer for the Unpaid Carers Programme, said: “We know that young carers in our communities are dedicating more time to caring for loved ones and are delivering remarkable support. It is a priority for us to help our young carers both to deliver for their loved ones and to be able to flourish as individuals with support.” There are lots of ways people can support young carers. They often report that people listening to them and noticing that they have caring responsibilities can make a big difference to their wellbeing - even a 10 minute chat can have an impact..
As young adult carers ourselves, it’s important to us that people recognise the service young carers provide to the system and the things we do, whether big or small. As this year’s theme is about making time for young carers, we are co-producing packs that focus on learning what young carers do, what effects it has on them and who they care for, and how professionals can properly help them.

New street bIN wraps
New colourful bin wraps have started to appear on litter bins across the city, designed by local artist, Luke Horton. Following on from a successful ‘Tek it ome’ litter campaign across Sheffield’s parks & green spaces last summer, the council’s Highways teams have now teamed up with Luke to design new bin stickers for street bins. Using local Sheffield slang ‘Chuck it in’ & ‘Purrit int bin’ it’s hoped that the new vibrant designs will make the litter bins stand out and encourage people to dispose of their rubbish in the right way. The council are involved in several initiatives to help keep Sheffield a clean and tidy place to live.
Councillor Joe Otten at Sheffield City Council said: “We have over 3000 litter bins on Sheffield’s streets that are maintained and emptied by Streets Ahead and it’s been great to work with a local designer to make some of these bins brighter and more visible. I’m hopeful that these new bin stickers encourage more of us to purrit int bin!”
Luke Horton, Sheffield – based Artist said: “It’s been an absolute pleasure creating these designs for Sheffield City Council, to help spread the important message about people using bins to get rid of their rubbish. I hope it makes a real difference and gets people thinking about chucking their litter in the right place.” The bin stickers have been evenly distributed across different prominent locations in the city as well as in busy pedestrian areas where it’s hoped they will have the biggest impact.
As energy prices continue to soar across and Brits are struggling to make ends meet, experts have compiled seven improvements which could be made to your home to help save on energy bills.
1. Energy efficient lighting in your home. Energy efficient lighting helps lower electricity bills and carbon dioxide emissions, all without reducing the quality of light in our homes. It is estimated lighting makes up 11% of the average UK household electricity consumption, so making the switch to LED bulbs could help you save money.
2. Switch to a water efficient showerhead. A water efficient shower head, also known as an eco-shower head, works by aerating the flow of water through the shower. The less water you need to use to have your shower means you’ll spend less on energy. Replacing your shower head is a relatively straightforward thing to do, but you’ll need to check if the shower head is compatible with your shower. As a bonus, as well as saving on your energy, if you pay for your water via a water meter, cutting down the amount of water you use will save on your water bill.
3. Insulate your walls, floors and roof. Add wall insulation, while this is costly it can have long term energy saving benefits. Check what type of walls you have to choose the right sort of insulation. Solid walls can use internal or external insulation, while cavity walls need insulation in the gap. More insulation
equals more structure to the wall therefore less heat is lost in your home.
Add floor insulation. Up to 15% of lost heat goes through the ground floor, so insulate it if possible. Suspended floors can use rigid boards, mineral wool, or spray foam insulation. Solid floors can have a layer of rigid insulation on top. Add roof and loft insulation. Insulating the roof or loft is costeffective and will help you save on energy bills. Most roofs can be insulated with different methods depending on whether they’re pitched or flat.
4. Reconsider your glazing choice. Energy efficient windows come in various styles and frame materials, and their performance is determined by how well they insulate heat, allow sunlight to pass through, and prevent air leakage. They consist of two or three glass panes sealed in a frame made of materials like uPVC or wood. Double-glazed windows have two panes of glass with a 16mm gap in between, while tripleglazed windows have three glass panes and two gaps, making them better insulators in some cases.
The gaps between the panes are filled with air or an inert gas and are sealed completely helping your home to stay warmer.
5. Switch from an oven to an air fryer.
You can save up to 75% on energy bills with
certain air fryers. Cooking energy consumption depends on the appliance, food and functions selected. Large ovens may use more energy to reach temperature and lose more energy when opened during cooking. Air fryers are ideal for cooking smaller meals however sizes vary and you can purchase double air fryers for bigger meals. Plug-in meters can measure energy consumption, and smart meters can estimate oven energy use.
6. Install a smart thermostat in your home. Smart thermostats control home heating and can be controlled remotely via an app on your phone or tablet. They offer real time energy consumption data and adjust heating conditions such as humidity, helping you save money. Some models can even learn from your behaviour and can adjust the temperature automatically.
7. Replace your boiler with a heat pump. Heat pumps are significantly more efficient than traditional boilers and use cleaner electricity, therefore reducing your home’s carbon footprint. A heat pump takes heat at a low temperature from the air or ground, increases that heat to a higher temperature and transfers it into your home to provide heating and hot water.

SHOW
It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra and Heavy Metal flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues, a place where legendary rocker Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and groupies line up for their chance at an autograph. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock ‘n’ roll fairy tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip – and themselves – before it’s too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more can hold the answer.

BLADES CUSHION CUT TO FOUR POINTS
The Blades slipped to a disappointing home loss against Luton Town on Saturday afternoon.
Carlton Morris scored the only goal of the game as United failed to build on the impressive midweek success at Reading.
United made two changes for the home clash against the Hatters, with Ahmedhodžić and Fleck recalled to the starting XI at the expense of Basham and McAtee, who dropped to the bench.
After a slow start, it was Bogle who tested Horvath with a back post header from Lowe’s cross following a patient buildup. The right-wing-back was then cautioned for a foul on Mpanzu and after an awkward landing, the Luton midfielder limped off.
The visitors were pushing United back and forced a flurry of corners, with Berry firing over from a deep cross from the right by Drameh. The last

action of the half saw Ahmedhodžić draw a comfortable save from Horvath from Norwood’s corner.
The second half got off to the worst possible start for the Blades as MORRIS opening the scoring on 53 minutes getting across his marker to convert from Adebayo’s low cross to the near post, after he’d got the better of Fleck.
There were just over 20 minutes remaining
We learnt a lot from that first half performanceTaylor
Matt Taylor’s reaction post-Birmingham City...
“We’ve been punished for a poor start to the game and probably a poor first half performance.
“We have to give the opposition credit at times, they out muscled us and got there first and came on top in most of
the duals in that first half period.
“We’re disappointed with the goals in the first half. In the second half we improved and I could have made more than two changes at half time.
“We looked more aggressive with our intent and the way we went about our performance.
We need one of those half chances to go in, really, just to give us something to really keep fighting before towards the end of the game.
“We’re pleased with the second half, but disappointed with the first. They were covering
the space better than we were, you could say they were more aggressive, we
when United made a double change, as Doyle and McAtee replaced Norwood and Robinson, but it wasn’t until the final ten minutes that United seriously threatened a goal.
McBurnie saw two headers saved in quick succession by Horvath, whilst Woodrow dragged an effort wide at the other end. In the final minute of the 90, Horvath fumbled a corner, a defender reacted quickest before substitute Doyle recycled the ball but Horvath stood big to deny Egan with an instinct save.
Five minutes of added time were signalled and United threw the ball into the box on numerous occasions, but another McBurnie header that went wide from McAtee’s cross was the last chance, as Lowe was cautioned moments before referee Doughty brought an end to the game.
just weren’t quite where we needed to be and we couldn’t quite stand the flow.”
A characterful performance delighted Darren Moore as the Owls beat Portsmouth 1-0 at Fratton Park.
Josh Windass’ early strike put Wednesday on their way to a 22nd league game unbeaten and the gaffer was pleased with his side’s mentality.
Moore said: “The lads showed character today and we needed to, this is a former stomping ground of mine so I know this club and what the fans can generate.
“There were 18,000+ in here today, so the atmosphere was there. The boys were competitive and you have to deal with the crowd as well and I thought
they did that.
“It’s a good experience for the group, there’s a togetherness between them and they have a good bond. They are getting through their work and it’s a well-earned three points.
“I told them that I’m proud of their performance in terms of their mentality and character today, and we’ll dust ourselves down ready to go again.”
Another club record continues to build as our victory sealed a 21st clean sheet of the campaign, with Moore crediting his side from front to back.
He added: “I was really pleased that we dealt with the crosses because we got the first contact.
“What I wasn’t pleased with was how they could lift their heads and get a cross in the box, we weren’t getting our distances right, so we tried to make some tweaks to stop the balls coming in. We defended our box very well.
“Credit to the boys, I
know the backline will get the plaudits but it was a together performance because I can even remember Michael Smith being back there clearing up and doing some dogged work to preserve the clean sheet.”
SCHOFIELD: WE SHOWED TWO SIDES OF OURSELVES IN WIMBLEDON WIN
Danny Schofield felt Rovers showed two sides to their game as they returned to winning ways against AFC Wimbledon.
An impressive first half in attacking terms, featuring goals from Harrison Biggins and George Miller, was followed by strong defensive resolve in the second half to secure the 2-1 triumph
Schofield on how the game played out:
“I think after the previous results and particularly the previous performance it was important that we put in a good shift and fought for a victory and I think I did that.
“With the manner we conceded the first goal, the injury to Charlie Lakin and a few other lads going down with knocks, it was a bit stop-start. But I thought we were very good in the first half.
“I thought we were our own worst enemy when we gave the ball away and suffered a few counterattacks in the first ten minutes. We addressed that and I thought we played some

really good football, scored two excellent goals and deserved to take the lead into half time.
“In the second half I thought it was a bit more of a fight, first and second balls, blocks on the edge of the box and competing. There was a big difference in the both halves but we showed two different sides to our game.
“I was really pleased because I saw much more energy than in previous games in terms of wanting to get on the ball. I think that’s the first part of it and then just showing for certain situations and making the right decisions. Some of the decision-making was really good in the first half.”
On Jonathan Mitchell’s reaction to his mistake for the Wimbledon goal: “I think when things like that happen and you make a mistake, which is part of football and life, it’s about the reaction. I saw straight away that Mitch [Jonathan Mitchell] got the ball out of the

goal, pushed his chest out and I thought he showed real character.
“I think that had a really positive effect on the rest of the team so credit to him to that. I think it shows what kind of person he is and how positive he was after that. It takes a lot of courage and it impacted the team in a positive way.
“He was in a bit of pain with his shoulder after a knock later and I feared the worst. I think he’s still in a bit of pain and we’ll get it assessed. But for him to carry on shows what sort of person he is and character he’s got.”
On the position in the table:
“We always want to be in and around it. I think we’ve found ourselves in the position a lot where we’ve drifted away from the play-offs or being close to them.
“We got 11 games left to play and we’ll always be fighting. We want something to play for this season. We’ve spoken about this with the players and we’ll continue fighting in every

game to get the three points.”
On George Miller’s goal:
“I’d probably have to give credit to Paul Green who works on the attacking set plays quite a lot. We know we’re not the biggest team in the league so we want to try to be creative in those situations.
“But also credit to the players because they took it on their own backs from the messages Greeny has been giving them.”
On team selection:
“It was a difficult decision over which striker would play. It’s probably the hardest part of my job, telling players they’re not going to start football games. It was a difficult one because Caolan has done well, particularly against Stockport where he led the line and fought. He’s done well so it was difficult.
“I played Luke Molyneux a bit higher to support George, almost like a second striker and that was the decision.”
