FUNDING SECURED FOR LOCAL PROJECTS

Sheffield City Council has secured grants from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund which will go towards community, culture and local economy projects. Funding has been secured for three years and will go towards a variety of projects such as Cost of Living support, helping businesses reduce their carbon footprint and continuing to provide the crucial on the ground support for businesses through Business Information Officers.

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund forms part of the UK government’s Levelling Up agenda and will see £2.6 billion of funding for local investment distributed to areas, for local accountable bodies to administer – in South Yorkshire this is the role of the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority

(SMYCA).

South Yorkshire has been allocated £39m and SYMCA has shaped a South Yorkshire Investment Plan, approved by Government in late 2022, which sets out three key themes directing the funding: Communities and Place; Local Business Support; and Employment and Skills.

The Council has worked closely with SYMCA and the other South Yorkshire local authorities to develop some regional programmes, as well as locally focused projects that have the potential to run through to 2025.

• Cultural and visitor economy programme - £346,560 – A series of projects highlighting Sheffield’s cultural assets and events, helping to build visitor economy and boost community pride.

• Sheffield Cost of Living Fund – £850,000 – Working with the South Yorkshire Community Foundation, this fund will support community groups working to lessen the impact of the cost of living crisis in Sheffield.

• Business Information Officers – £244,953Originally brought together during Covid-19 to help high street businesses stay abreast of guidance and access funding, this expert team has become integral to the Council’s business support and this funding will allow this to continue.

Business Information Officers visit businesses door to door across Sheffield, gathering essential knowledge of the issues businesses are facing, and give owners in-depth, tailored support. And finally, 3 core elements

of regional business support priorities:

• Business Productivity Programme – £2,046,895 –The continuation of a project which has given invaluable support to businesses across South Yorkshire - helping them to work smarter and find valuable efficiencies. It offers grants of up to £12,500 for productivity and digital adoption projects.

• Low Carbon – £1,291,960

- A South Yorkshire wide programme supporting businesses to reduce their carbon footprint through a sustainability audits and grants for carbon reduction measures. These grants will be administered by Sheffield City Council.

•Launchpad programme – £686,969 - A programme supporting new entrepreneurs across South Yorkshire

to start and scale their businesses. Through a mix of workshops, events and one to one support from business advisors and coaches, it helps new business owners explore and challenge their ideas and make a strong start in business.

Doncaster has receiveD news on its GBr hQ BiD

Mark Harper MP has announced the winner of the competition to house Great British Railways Headquarters (GBR HQ) and it’s been revealed that Doncaster was pipped at the post by fellow competitor, Derby. Doncaster has been waiting for a result since last summer when the city found out that out of 42 locations, it made the shortlist along with fellow contenders Birmingham, Crewe, Derby, Newcastleupon-Tyne and York in a bid to be crowned the home of Britain’s railways.

Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones said: “I am deeply disappointed in

today’s result for Doncaster. I feel strongly that placing the Great British Railways Headquarters in Doncaster, in the heart of South Yorkshire, would have brought a great many benefits to our newly crowned city and to the region. Doncaster would have made the perfect home for the GBR HQ and locating it here would have gone a long way in realising the Government’s levelling up aspirations for the area.

“I am immensely proud of the bid we submitted and I’d like to thank the bid team and all those involved for putting together an exceptional bid and our residents, businesses, partner

organisations and local communities for getting behind it. We had an overwhelming level of public support for Doncaster’s bid and it’s been heart-warming to receive this. UPLIFT Rotherham Skate and Art Festival returns with an action-packed programme

Rotherham town centre will be transformed into an urban playground for the UPLIFT

CHANGING YOUNG LIvES

A SOUTH YORKSHIRE skatepark is changing young people’s lives through riding, skating and scooting.

Active lessons taught on skate ramps at the not-forprofit project are helping vulnerable children, excluded from school or in local authority care, to engage with education and grow through sport.

South Yorkshire’s Active Travel Commissioner, triple Olympic champion Ed Clancy OBE, met Co-Founder Amy Cooper and the team at Onboard Skatepark to hear first-hand how activity and sport is developing self-belief and better decisions in some of South Yorkshire’s most deprived young communities.

Co-founder of Onboard Skatepark, Amy Cooper, said: “It has been such a wonderful morning. The students thoroughly enjoyed his visit, they were keen to show their skills and also teach him how to BMX too! Hopefully moving forward this will be an incredible partnership towards helping young vulnerable lead a more active/ healthy life style and improve their chances in life.” Ed Clancy has committed to working with communities to address some of South Yorkshire’s most difficult and entrenched problems by improving active travel and physical activity across the region –including an ambitious plan to increase cycling by 350% and walking by 21% by 2040. The visit to Onboard included joining young people in a BMX and scooter session, part of the skatepark’s regular alternative provision to

learning program.

Ed Clancy, said: “Having an arena like Onboard provides youngsters with a place where they feel like they belong. As soon as they’re in that place – surrounded by positive, inspirational role models - they want to be there. They want to engage with learning, with life. We know that being active helps young people concentrate and learn and it’s evident to see that they’re buying into the GCSE Maths and English being taught at Onboard.

I have no doubt that that building and the amazing people in it will have a powerful influence on how their lives end up.” Research shows physical activity in children and young people promotes healthy growth and development, improves energy levels, mental health and supports better academic outcomes. Onboard offers bespoke learning programmes from positive role models and enrichment, teamwork and communication skills from activities including bike maintenance, woodwork, engineering, art, and GCSE English and maths support. Community Interest Company, ArtWorks South Yorkshire, recently collaborated with Onboard to create a skateboard art project. ArtWorks aims to challenge people’s perceptions of learning disabilities and autism through celebrating the creativity and ambition of artists - promoting fitness, encouraging teamwork and nurturing mindfulness through active sessions.

As part of the English Football League’s (EFL) official charity partnership with the British Red Cross, Rotherham United took part in a new ticketing scheme for members of the community in a bid to help those facing loneliness and isolation. The scheme will bring people together with other local fans to enjoy the nation’s favourite game to help reduce feelings of isolation that people may be experiencing and encourage new friendships and connections.

Janet Cocking, a retired nurse from Todwick, attended the new ticketing initiative with her son John. It was the first football match they had been to together, so they were both really excited.

Janet knows all too well what it feels like to be housebound, after living with a long-term illness, she said:

“If it wasn’t for being offered tickets to the game I would’ve still been in bed”

Janet and John were invited to the event by the British Red Cross when they borrowed a wheelchair, from the charity’s mobility aids service. John also said:

“This opportunity through the Red Cross enabled us to connect with lots of really nice people in vibrant surroundings and importantly spend some quality time together out in the fresh air, creating memories along the way. It was such a memorable day out that ordinarily we would certainly never of contemplated having. The match result (2-0 defeat to Coventry) was literally the only thing that wasn’t perfect!”

It comes at a time when most people (84%) living in Yorkshire and the Humber believe loneliness is a problem in England, according to new research by the British Red Cross. The new findings released by the charity today show over 1 in 3 (35%)* of people in Yorkshire

and the Humber are experiencing loneliness, and almost two thirds (65%) agree it’s a bigger problem this winter than last winter.

Over three quarters (76%) of those living in Yorkshire and the Humber, also agree that the cost of living will push more people into loneliness, and 42% of people in the region are restricting how much they socialise this winter.

At Christmas, more than 2 in 5 people surveyed from Yorkshire and the Humber (43%) cut back on socialising in pubs, restaurants and clubs etc. due to financial concerns and 27% cut back on travelling to see family and friends.

Daniel Collier, Mobility Aids Service Logistics Manager from the British Red Cross, an organisation that already supports over 100,000 people experiencing loneliness per year through its services across the country, said:

“Loneliness can have a huge impact on people’s health and wellbeing and is known to be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

“The incidence of loneliness skyrocketed during the pandemic, as a result of people being cut off from their family and friends. Now the increased cost of living is forcing many to cut back and sacrifice on socialising, making people more at risk of becoming lonely and isolated.

“We know health and mobility issues can lead to increased social isolation and this ticketing initiative will provide a vital lifeline for people who may be struggling and feel desperately alone.”

The British Red Cross is the EFL’s Official Charity Partner and will be combining their efforts to reduce isolation in communities around the country via the EFL and its 72 clubs.

Northern is urging customers using digital tickets on their services to ensure they always have sufficient battery power to present their ticket for inspection – or face a £100 penalty fare. “I’ve got a ticket but my phone has died” is an increasingly popular excuse given by those unable to satisfy ticket checks. Unable to distinguish between genuine customers caught ‘power short’ and those deliberately attempting to fare-evade, the train operator’s conductors and revenue officers have no option but to issue the national penalty fare, which has recently increased to £100. However, in the last 12 months, Northern has installed more than 11,800 plugs and 17,200 USB sockets on-board their trains – providing ample opportunity for customers to charge their devices.

And now, Northern has begun a trial with a company called BattPoint to provide power packs at stations for those travelling without their phone charger or power cable. They cost just 99p for the first ten minutes or £3.99 for the day and come with Micro USB, Type-c and iOS adapters - making them suitable for a range of devices including those by Apple and Samsung, as well

as games consoles like Nintendo Switch.

We were fascinated by research from BattPoint which suggests 50% of smartphone and tablet users run out of battery at least once a day and 96% carrying no form of backup power with them. Through this trial – and the roll-out of out of nearly 30,000 plugs and USB sockets on our trains – we’re doing our bit to make sure no-one finds themselves ‘out of juice’ when they hear the words ‘tickets please’.” Northern has invested in the largest network of digital ticket infrastructure of any train operator in the country, making it easier than ever to buy a ticket via their app, website or one of more than 600 ticket machines across the network.

Fare evaders are prosecuted under the provisions of the Regulation of Railways Act 1889 and the Railway Byelaws made pursuant to the Transport Act 2000.

Guide Dogs is urgently appealing for people to sign up as volunteers in Sheffield and surrounding areas. Specifically, we are looking for a branch coordinator, to head up the Sheffield fundraising group, and a branch treasurer to manage the group’s finances. The branch coordinator is a key member of the branch, responsible for organising and overseeing all the fundraising events in the area and running the branch meetings. The role offers an excellent opportunity for anyone who likes organising events and meeting new people. The branch treasurer supports the local group by managing the funds they have raised and helping to maintain the accuracy of the team’s financial records. For anyone who has an interest in numbers and wants to use their skills to support a charity, this could be the perfect role.

A UK-wide charity, Guide Dogs helps people with sight loss to live the life they choose and to step out into the world with confidence. It costs around £55,000 to train and support a guide dog partnership throughout the life of the dog. As well as breeding and training costs, Guide Dogs covers the cost of food, vets’ bills and ongoing training after the dog is partnered with someone with sight loss. LocaLLy brewed beer voted the best amber L ager in the UK

Sheffield independent - Triple Point Brewery + Bar, won Gold and Silver in the SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers) Awards, presented at BeerX in Liverpool last week.

The brewery, which has its own taproom and bar located down Shoreham Street in Sheffield City Centre, now proudly displays awards for its Vienna and Flux brews.

Vienna – a clean, bready Amber lager won gold in the National Keg Amber and Dark category (4.9% ABV).

While Flux went on to win Silver in the Can IPA category (6.8% ABV).

Alex, Master Brewer at Triple Point Brewing, commented: ‘The moment we tried Vienna, we knew we’d made something special. It’s a modern take on the classic Vienna

style, brewed entirely with Vienna and Munich malts and lots of hops from old Habsburg Empire Nations.

‘We find that very few brewery taps have serving vessels for this type of beer. So, we’re happy to be able to produce it for the locals. It’s purist, the way we do lager.’

The team aim to create an interesting range of beers –particularly, lagers.

Beer enthusiast and Sales Manager, George Brook, said: ‘Vienna was a passion project for us, so to win Gold in the Nationals was an exceptional moment. It feels pretty good to say the least. To then go onto win silver for Flux. We were lost for words.

A second Yorkshire-born West End actor and singer has joined the cast for a special night of musical entertainment at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre.

Coronation Street favourite Wendi Peters and Sheffield’s Aladdin star Matt Croke are already confirmed to top the bill for A Night at the Musicals, South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout’s all-singing fundraising showcase of community theatre talent. And it is now confirmed that they will be joined on stage on May 23 by actor and singer Bradley Judge - currently touring in hit musical Sister Act, following a successful

run at London’s Hammersmith Apollo. Bradley has previously appeared alongside Wendi in the national tour of classic musical Salad Days. His other London and touring appearances include Hairspray, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Hair, Grease and Pippin along with a host of pantomime and concert appearances.

Bradley grew up in West Yorkshire but also has strong links with the Sheffield and Rotherham area - his grandmother is acclaimed amateur singer and actor Chris Ayres.
