The show that took the dumb out of being blonde and makes pink the hottest colour in town is coming back to Sheffield in a fantastic new production!

Legally Blonde is the award-winning hit musical inspired by a Hollywood classic comedy. It’s the story of Elle Woods, the girl who appears to have it all until her life is turned upside-down when her boyfriend dumps her to attend Harvard Law School.

Determined to get him back, Elle sets off in pursuit but surprises herself when she discovers that she too has the potential to be a legal eagle, overcoming dumb blonde stereotypes and taking the court room by storm as she tackles the defence in a notorious murder trial. Now the show is coming to Sheffield’s Montgomery Theatre and Arts Centre in a new production from Woodseats Musical Theatre Company that runs from July 12 to 15. It follows a strong of recent Woodseats hits that

includes Half a Sixpence, All Shook Up, Disco Inferno, Footloose and The Wedding Singer. “We are delighted to be back at the Montgomery Theatre with such a great show,” said Woodseats chair May Newey.

Weston Park Cancer Charity are thrilled to announce they’re launching a brand new event, Walk as One, on Sunday 17th September at Endcliffe Park Sheffield.

Walk as One was originally planned in May 2020 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the charity but had to be sadly postponed due to Covid lockdowns. The event will include an accessible 4 mile walk as well as a more challenging 10 mile route for walkers to take part in.

Whether you take part in the 4 mile waterside walk or 10 mile challenge route, you can join us to raise funds, celebrate the charity’s achievements and enjoy a fun-filled day, outdoors. For many it will be a special chance to remember someone too, and to walk in their memory.

Passing your driving test is an exciting time for any new driver, but it’s easy to forget all the essential steps that are required of you before you can legally get behind the wheel.

Finding and understanding

car insurance for new drivers can be confusing and overwhelming, which is why insurance experts have revealed a tell-all guide for any new driver looking to insure their car. This guide will help new drivers to make more educated decisions about insurance.

What type of insurance is required by new drivers?

Whether you’ve been driving for years or are a new driver itching to get on the roads, the law requires you to have third-party insurance at a minimum. You can be prosecuted, fined or even face court if you are caught driving without insurance, and it’s possible your car could be taken or destroyed.

New drivers who may struggle to afford a car or policy can be added to another person’s policy as a named driver. This person does not have to be a family member or relative!

How much is it to insure a car for a new driver?

Car insurance for new drivers, especially those aged between 17-25, can be expensive, so it’s important to look around and explore all the options before choosing which insurance policy to go for. There are several factors that will determine the cost of the insurance; these are:

• Age

• Type of vehicle

• Where the car is kept

• How the vehicle will be used (if it will be used to commute)

• Driver behaviour (does the driver have any previous claims or points

Although you can become a new driver at any age, it is particularly common for young drivers to be charged more for insuring their car. In the UK, young drivers are expected to pay an average of £1,800 per year to insure their vehicle. Young drivers are charged more to insure a car due to lack of experience, meaning they are deemed high-risk.

To make insurance cheaper, you can pay for the year’s policy upfront; however, if this is too much of costly payment to make at one time, you can opt to pay monthly.

There are also ways that a young or new driver can reduce the cost of insurance premiums; these can include:

Insure a car with a smaller engine – a smaller engine is less likely to be involved in high-speed accidents as they are less powerful.

Get insured on a black box policy – black boxes allow the insurer to monitor the speed and behaviours of how you drive.

Add a low-risk and experienced driver to your policy –adding experienced drivers, such as parents, relatives or older friends, onto your insurance can, in some cases, help to reduce the price. Make sure, though, that this added driver does not, at any point, pretend to be the vehicle’s main driver, as this is illegal.

Pay a higher voluntary excess –paying a higher voluntary excess fee on top of your required excess can help reduce the price. It can cause you to pay more in some cases, though, if you need to make a claim.

Following a ban on bagged house-coal sales in England, the sale of loose house coal is set to become illegal from 1 May 2023, homeowners who favour coal for domestic burning will very soon need to find a suitable approved alternative.

In light of this, two of the UK’s leading fuel heating organisations, are advising consumers still using house coal that it is time to prepare and switch to a different fuel for their domestic burning needs. Outlawing the sale of wetter wood and house coal (also known as bituminous coal), the Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) (England) Regulations 2020 acknowledged house-coal as the most polluting fuels used in Britain’s homes.

The only exemption from the new legislation is traditional house coal extracted and sold from the Forest of Dean, which will continue to be sold locally due to the history of mining within the area. Here, a total of six mines will remain and an agreement between Defra (the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and The Royal Forest of Dean Freeminers’ Association means the sale of the coal will help to keep the only working coalfield in the UK open.

Having had two years to prepare for the ban, approved coal merchants will be able to advise consumers on the most suitable alternative solid fuels to switch to, ensuring they are ready for when the enforcement comes into place. Alternatives include those manufactured solid fuels (MSFs) which have been verified as being “smokeless” and all of which meet relevant standards for sulphur content and smoke emissions under the Ready to Burn scheme. These can be a good alternative to house coal as they can be utilised on existing appliances designed to burn mineral

fuels, whilst also burning more efficiently, rendering them less polluting and more cost-effective than traditional coal. Regardless of what type of fuel consumers opt for as an alternative, they should look out for the Ready to Burn certification mark. Appointed by Defra, HETAS and Woodsure administer the Ready to Burn schemes for MSFs and wood fuel respectively. This is a trusted mark which makes it easy for consumers to not only identify fuels that are suitable for immediate use, but also to reduce their impact on air quality and the level of fine particulates emitted from their home.

Bruce Allen, chief executive officer for HETAS and Woodsure, comments: “With the extended legislation coming into play from 1 May 2023, we want homeowners to be clear on the right fuels to burn. By looking out for Ready to Burn fuel, we are confident that those who have traditionally preferred house coal will easily be able to choose an alternative fuel which will lessen the impact their domestic burning has on the environment.”

Homeowners should note that the 1 May ban relates to the sale of coal only. Those who have prepurchased coal and have stockpiles can use them up. However, our advice remains to seek out an alternative solution that’s not only better for the environment but for the appliances as well.

Elder fraud is where fraudsters target your parents, grandparents and those from the elderly community. Fraudsters often take advantage of those who aren’t tech-savvy, so familiarising yourself with scams can lead to preventing the fraudsters from being successful.

Cybersecurity experts have compiled a list of tips to spot and prevent fraud. What is elder fraud and who are the targets?

Fraudsters target seniors in elder fraud by tricking them into giving sensitive information or offering fake financial benefits. Perpetrators could be strangers or known to the elderly, like family, friends or colleagues, and victims can lose their savings and suffer devastating consequences. Older adults are a prime target for fraudsters. They normally target victims in retirement or close to retirement as they have a steady income, excellent credit history and more savings than younger people.

The most common scams for elders to look out for:

• Grandparent scams: Scammers often pose as the victim’s grandchild to dupe seniors into sending money urgently for emergency expenses like overdue rent or car repairs. They often ask for secrecy, and in one case, an elderly woman was scammed of £20,000 by someone posing as law enforcement in 2019.

• Romance scams: Romance scams often target women 50 and above, but men can be victims too. Scammers will usually target seniors who have lost their spouses and are looking

for companionship. An example of would be perpetrators requesting money transfers or gift card vouchers sent to an email address.

• False charity scams: Fraudsters may pose as representatives from a real charity or create fictitious charity organisations. They can make calls, text, or send emails. In some cases, they may even visit seniors in person. False charity schemes commonly happen after a significant event, like a health crisis, global sociopolitical campaigns, or a natural disaster.

What are some other common types of elder fraud?

Protecting seniors from scams is crucial, as scammers use various methods to steal personal information and money.

Elder scams include fake medical schemes, investment scams, and phishing emails, taking advantage of the complexity of the healthcare system and seniors’ fixed income. To avoid falling victim, seniors and their loved ones should research charities, verify emails and phone calls, and be cautious of unsolicited requests for money or personal information.

Additionally, seniors should beware of insurance coverage scams, romance scams, government impersonation, sweepstakes and lottery scams, identity theft, and tech support scams. Taking precautions and being aware of these scams can help prevent them.

Tips to prevent seniors from being scammed

• Stay connected to your

loved ones to prevent isolation, which makes them more vulnerable to scams.

• Warn them never to share sensitive information and explain why.

• Help them create strong, unique passwords and avoid reusing them.

• Limit online shopping to trusted retailers and check for secure websites.

• Never click on suspicious links in emails, social media messages, texts, or take calls from fake caller IDs.

• Monitor monthly banking statements for signs of identity theft or unauthorised accounts. Shred statements before disposing of them.

• Protect social media accounts by only accepting friend requests from people they know, updating privacy settings, and using multi-factor authentication. Delete messages from strangers and avoid odd payment types.

• Encourage your parents to name you as a Trusted

Contact Person to speak with their financial advisors if there are concerns.

• Warn other family and friends if one of your loved ones has experienced a scam attempt. Discuss how to prevent fraudulent attempts.

What to do if a senior has been a victim of elder fraud

If an elderly person you know has been scammed, it’s important not to panic and to stay calm. Document everything that has happened, including phone call logs, text messages, and emails, and report the scam to person’s bank and credit card providers. File a report with the local police and change all passwords to stronger ones, including social media accounts and investment profiles, setting different passwords for each site and enabling 2-Factor Authentication.

on Devonshire Green, Sheffield’s free official Eurovision Party will be jam packed with street performers, dance acts, traditional Ukrainian musicians and Sheffield will be playing host to Marina Krutь – who will be travelling over from Ukraine to join the party. Some big surprises which will be announced in the coming weeks mean Sheffield’s Eurovision party is not to be missed.

Theatre at Risk Doncaster Grand Theatre receives over £6000 as part of restorative project

The Friends of Doncaster Grand Theatre have been awarded £6500 as part of a project to help remember the Grand Theatre as a working theatre.

The aim of the project will see individuals record their memories of the theatre, whilst separately, appropriate work will be done to digitalise many of the old artefacts and memorabilia associated with the Grade II listed building.

Doncaster Grand Theatre was just one of seven theatres to receive funding though the first round of the Resilient Theatres: Resilient Communities Grants Programme, a funding programme run by the Theatres Trust, the national advisory body for theatres, set up to help progress the restoration, reopening or revitalisation of At Risk Theatres.

The Resilient Theatres: Resilient Communities programme is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Pilgrim Trust and Swire Charitable Trust. Cllr Nigel Ball, Cabinet member for Public Health, Leisure, Culture and Planning, said: “It is testament to the hard work of those both involved in the process of the bid, and those working to remember the theatre, that this funding has been successful at this stage. My congratulations go to everyone involved and I look forward to seeing all the artefacts and memorabilia brought to life on the many digital platforms available.”

Ken Waight, Chair of the Friends of Doncaster Grand Theatre said: “This is excellent news for all those

involved in helping to preserve the Grand, for the coming years. We have many artefacts, including programmes and posters from past productions, even a document relating to the theatre’s construction in 1899 and their digitisation will ensure they can be made more widely available for viewing in the community. Recording individuals’ memories of what the theatre was like in its prime will also be an essential part of taking the theatre forward.”

Theatres Trust Director Jon Morgan said: “We believe every theatre on our Theatres at Risk list has the potential to be returned for use by their communities, providing performance venues of types currently lacking in their local areas and bringing much needed footfall to town centres. Theatres Trust is delighted to support Doncaster Grand Theatre with this project that will help it move a step closer to its ultimate goal.”

Listed as a Grade II listed building since 1995, The Grand ceased to be a working theatre around 1960 when it was turned into a bingo hall. This later use ceased in the 1990s and it has been vacant ever since. Most recently, a working group – containing the Frenchgate Centre, Friends and City of Doncaster Council among others – has been set up to seek a viable use for the theatre.

“We know what League Two is full of and it was definitely a scrap and a battle in the second half. I felt the lads fought really well for long periods bit there were key moments that let us down.
